From The Inside Flap:.......2005-10-24
Beautiful Crocheted Sweaters. The title says it all. Here is a sweater for every season, more than 35 projects to keep your crochet hook busy all year long. As you leaf through these pages and admire the striking photos, you'll have a hard time deciding which sweater to begin first. Shall it be a charming Fair Isle crew neck in delicate pastel hues or a lusciously soft turtleneck to warm you through winter's chills? Perhaps it should be a dressy cardigan for an upcoming event or a casual vest to wear on spring strolls in town.
It hardly matters which you make first, be- cause if you're like most people who love to crochet, one sweater will lead to another. And another. Soon Beautiful Crocheted Sweaters will be your most frequently consulted source for designs, and for good reasons:
The exquisite photography captures the true colors, textures, and details of the sweaters and makes them seem to leap off the page. The clear, step-by-step instructions and helpful hints lead you expertly from the first stitch to the last. Diagrams and charts help with the more intricate patterns. And all projects are keyed to degree of difficulty and arranged by chapter according to stitch patterns, so novice, average, and expert crocheters all enjoy an impressive array of projects.
Classy, classic, inventive and excellent!.......2000-08-03
This is the best crochet book I've ever purchased. I want to make beautiful sweaters. I usually gravitate toward knitted sweaters because the knitters seem to have more pattern selections in beautiful sweaters. Most of the crochet sweaters patterns I have seen so far have not impressed me. But now I have the perfect book - exactly what I wanted! This book is a must have, if you can find a copy. I will have to go search out all of the other work that this author has produced now. I hope she's done something for children!
This Book Should be Reprinted ASAP.......1997-12-04
This is one of the best crochet books I've ever seen and has the most attractive sweater patterns that I've been able to find. It even includes Fair Isle and Tunisian designs. Unlike many crochet books, "Beautiful Crocheted Sweaters" uses readily available yarns and has great color pictures of each project. It also includes some fairly unusual techniques that I've been able to incorporate into some of my other crochet projects. I would love to own a copy of this book but have had to settle for using a copy I found at the library. "Beautiful Crocheted Sweaters" belongs in every avid crocheter's personal library.
A must for crochet fans!.......1997-09-24
About a year ago, I happened to find a copy of BEAUTIFUL CROCHETED SWEATERS in my local library. Since then, I've been hooked! Borrowing the book from the library was no longer a choice. I wanted my very own copy. I searched for a copy of Patricia Bevans' book in all of my local bookstores, but, unfortunately, the book was out of print.
Recently, however, I found a copy of the book, and I am, to say the least, ecstatic! I haven't stopped crocheting since! BEAUTIFUL CROCHETED SWEATERS is exactly as its title implies -- beautiful! The book offers over 35 sweaters, vests, cardigans, and short & long sleeved pull-overs for women. All the projects in the book are categorized according to one's expertise. For example, there are beginner, intermediate, and advanced projects. There's something for everyone. Also, the pictures of the sweaters are very pretty and entice the crocheter to want to start the project right away. Personally, I'm really happy that I now have my very own copy of Patricia Bevans' BEAUTIFUL CROCHETED SWEATERS. I highly recommend it. :-)

Some good stuff here.......2005-03-01
This droll, witty collection is based -- very loosely and kinda sideways -- on Neil Gaiman's darker "Sandman" series. All the stories are themselves about storytelling, the first being the not entirely trustworthy account by Merv Pumkinhead (Dreamland's janitor) of his exploits in recovering stolen dream-dust and (of course) saving the world in the process. He's a James Bond clone in his own mind, with a bit of Agent 86 thrown in. The second piece, which should appeal to my fellow librarians everywhere, is "The Further Adventures of Danny Nod, Heroic Library Assistant," about the perils of recovering checked-out library books. It's kinda weak, though. The last piece is a catch-all sort of visual narrative FAQ about why dreams work the way they do. But in between is the meat of the book, a four-part yarn centering on the last of the Thessaliad witches, her quest to do unto the ancient death gods of various cultures before they do unto her, and her possible involvement with a nice-looking but ghostly fetch (called Fetch, naturally). On the surface, Thess is a cute, bespectacled college student in pink bunny-slippers and a teddy bear backpack, but underneath she's a cold-blooded survivor who's not afraid of anything. People tend to die around her, innocent civilians included, but that's not (usually) her fault or her problem. Willingham writes a good story and Shawn McManus is a terrific artist of the realist persuasion, just right for this sort of story.
Stories From The Dreaming.......2003-10-29
This is a collection of stories by various writers and artists set in the Sandman framework. Each of the stories is quite different.
First we have a spy thriller staring Pumpkinhead Jack. Is her really a hero or is he just pulling our leg? The answers might be surprising. The most entertaining story of the lot.
Next we have a tale of a young boy in the Library Corps. He must take his red wagon and retrieve book that were taken out the previous night. The weakest of the stories and far too cartoonish for my taste.
Next we have a three part story of a powerful witch who is the target of a group of death gods. She is joined by a Fetch (a type of ghost). Nice plotting and shows promise of further tales.
Finally we get a short collection of loosely-joined scenes meant to answer dream questions we were afraid to ask. This has its ups and down but is generally OK.
A reasonable collection that will hopefully be followed by more in a similar vein. We shall see.
Book Description
It is hard to maintain a witty equilibrium in the realm of manners in cultured society. If one ignores social conventions, one runs the risk of being perceived as uneducated; however, following all common protocol pegs one as a nerd. With tongue in cheek, Potter reveals how to confound those who would like to practice their one-upmanship.
What is upmanship? An angle of vision, a way of life, a series of gambits, ploys and devices--all of these and more, upmanship is an individual talent. Remember one final overwhelming truth: If your not one up, you're one down.

Potter's books are the funniest I have ever read. I go back to each of them regularly.
I read this book in high school........2000-04-05
As a high school youth this book was my introduction to subtlety. And as a kid in Pittsburgh I had much to learn on this subject. One would hope that in today crass atmosphere such ploys are still advantageous but I doubt it. In fact I'll wager that there is not one person in a thousand who can identify this book as the source of the popularity of the word "ploy" although the word is widely used. Read it, it's fun.
Humor at it's best.......1998-12-17
Potter caqptures the essence of British humor. He wrote circa 1950 and was a master at capitalizing on observations for the purposes of gaining an edge in the most humorous of cicumstances. The British understatement and preoccupation for the unimportant things in life is the starting point for Potter to describe how life should be lived. From how to decorate ones office, how to walk in a museum, how to properly answer the telephone, to what to wear for golf has been reduced to a science so that the other person will ultimately feel uncomfortable and off balance. If one can possibly think British, then this book may be one of the funniest books ever written.

This is a nice 2 part music book. One for the fiddle and the other for the piano. Written for the fiddle so the transitions of notes is very flowing. And the piano is easy to accompany the fiddle. Really enjoying this very much.

I like all the examples, its a lot more useful than "here is a rule, go follow it".
Fun to read, clear, concise.
I like most of Marty Bergens books, but a few are filled with too much "filler" and you end up paying $7 for what other books would cover in 30 pages.
This is a great books for EVERYONE below expert.

fairly decent ideas on negotiation, nothing new here, but would be helpful for people new to negotiation.
Solid coverage of the basics of negotiation.......2007-01-18
As part of the 17-title Harvard Business Essentials series, launched in 2002, this book solidly covers the basics of negotiation. The clarity of the explanations, range of examples and methodical exposition make it a very useful reference for the beginner or mid-level negotiator. Don't let the very rationality of the book's approach make you think that negotiation is easy. It's just that these instructions make it understandable and accessible. Harvard's expert doesn't dwell on the pressures negotiators face and the resultant anxieties, or give a lot of space to the emotional complexity of dealing with money issues with family or friends. Instead, this is a solid, no-detours, nuts-and-bolts manual. We recommend this book as a primer for up-and-coming or partially experienced negotiators. Start here; when you master this solid base, you can polish your skills with something more advanced.
Negotiating Fundamentals.......2006-12-21
The "Harvard Business Essentials Guide to Negotiation" is an excellent introductory book for laying out the essential basic elements of successful negotiations. Step-by-step, the book explains the necessary skills that one requires to carry out effective negotiations.
The book explains the distinction between distributive and integrative negotiation. Distributive bargaining seeks to divide up a fixed amount of resources resulting in a win-lose situation whereas integrative bargaining seeks one or more settlements that can result in win-win outcomes. Integrative bargaining is preferable to distributive bargaining because integrative process builds long-term relationships and facilitates being future partners. It bonds negotiators and enables them to leave the negotiating process feeling that they have all won. The reason why distributive bargaining is prevalent in organizations is that parties are often not open with information and neither are they candid about their concerns. There is often lack of trust and empathy.
The book also describes the concept of BATNA, that is, the best alternative to a negotiated agreement or the lowest acceptable value to an individual for a negotiated agreement. Any offer that you receive that is higher than your BATNA is good and by the same token, you cannot expect the other party to accept an offer that is lower than their BATNA.
The book also highlights other essential elements to a successful negotiation including the need to prepare and plan, being clear about the ground rules, justifying issues on the negotiating table, bargaining and resolving conflicts as well as closure and implementation
The book is well written and is easy to understand and follow. Recommended reading for beginners to negotiation.
Negotiation.......2006-11-10
I think these types of books work better when they diagram and use modeling as a method to teach. Like many books I read, there was a sense of repetitiveness. I think overall it is a good introductory book for negotiation skills, but not what I was looking for.
Alternatives drive Fairness.......2006-11-05
An excellent primer on negotiation. This text defines negotiation and then becomes an 'essential' 'how to' text with a wealth of information. From preparation to 'table tactics' through 'tips and traps', this book helps unfold the fundamental truth of negotiation - alternatives drive fairness.
Book Description
In 1966, college basketball was almost completely segregated. In the championship game for the NCAA title that year, Don Haskins, coach of the then little-known Texas Western College, did something that had never been done before in the history of college basketball. He started five black players and in the now legendary game, unseated the nationally top-ranked University of Kentucky. Broadcast on television throughout the country, the Miners victory became the impetus for the desegregation of all college teams in the South during the next few years. Now, for the first time, Hall of Fame coach Don Haskins tell his story. Beginning as a small-town high school basketball coach, Haskins was known for his tough coaching methods and larger-than-life personality. As a child growing up during the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma, he developed a strong set of values and discipline that he would instill in his players throughout his coaching career. With recollections from his former players, including those of the 1966 team, along with Haskinss own Seven Principles for Success, Glory Road is the inspiring story of a living legend and one of the most respected coaches of all time. With a foreword by basketball legend Bobby Knight, and coinciding with the release of the film Glory Road, the story of Don Haskins and his championship team is sure to become a classic for sports fans and historians.

A few observations from someone who was there.......2007-06-10
Your current published reviews are enthusiastic but in some cases contain factual inaccuracies. The movie and the book are related in title and subject (Don Haskins); but that is about as far as it goes. The movie which focuses on 1966 is moving and concludes with a happy and factual ending - that is, that Texas Western won that game in 1966 --- but the movie not always true to the facts. Understandably I suppose when you try to compress a life story, even if only one year of a life, into a 2 hour or so movie. The book, from someone who played for Coach, reviewed and commented on the galley proof, and has represented Coach Haskins and the '66 team as a lawyer and a friend for 35 plus years, is "spot-on" and should be read by everyone who has ever had an interest in basketball.
As to the fortunes of 1966 team and the gentlemen representing that team so well, then and now, suffice it to say that the past 3 or 4 years have indeed been a trip down Glory Road: The team was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA this past April, only the 6th team to ever be so honored - and the first collegiate team --- with the enshrinement proceedings to be held on September 7 and 8, 2007 at the HOF facility. The team has also been honored with dinner and a movie at the White House with President and Mrs. Bush; the team will be inducted in the Boys Clubs of New York Hall of Fame in October of 2007, and some of the members volunteered to take an Armed Services Entertainment Tour to Germany, the Netherlands and England in February of 2007 to entertain our country's troops and their families. Also, Texas Western's victory on March 19, 1966 in College Park, Maryland over Hall of Fame Coach Adolph Rupp and his great Kentucky Wildcat team, that included Pat Riley, Louie Dampier and Larry Conley, among others, was selected by the National Collegiate Athletic Association ("NCAA") as one of 25 defining moments in the 100 year History of NCAA sports.
I could go on but I think this should at least clear up a few matters and hopefully whet the appetite of prospective readers and reviewers to pause and consider reading this book, viewing the movie. Coach Haskin's story is presented in an interesting manner, containing both Coach Haskin's well known skills as a pick-up riding around story teller and the literary skills of Dan Wetzel who spent hours upon hours riding, listening and recording those stories.
It is well written and factual to a fault; and points out what people can do when they put aside prejudices, rediculous stereoptypes (blacks had no discipline, couldn't be a point guard or quarterback) and circumstances and judge people by character and performance; not color and privilege. Every one of those (then but now not so) young men -- all are still alive except Bobby Joe Hill who passed away of a heart attack in 2002 --- that comprised the Texas Western Team in 1966 had talent and skill; more importantly they had character and heart and respect for each other and their coaches and that combination took them to over the top.
Enjoy this story and share it with others - because of their courage and accomplishments, and those of others in other aspects of the 60's civil rights movement, questions surrounding recruiting, playing, starting and honoring people of color in sports today seem strangely quaint, and beyond the imagination of most people born after the '60s. But it wasn't always so and for this all of society owes a debt of gratitude to Don Haskins, the members of his '66 team, the University of Texas at El Paso (formerly Texas Western College) and the citizens of El Paso for contributing to the environment in which we now find ourselves with respect to race relations in sports.
Kudos to a teammate!.......2007-04-05
I have the honor of being Don Haskins teammate at Oklahoma A & M, now Oklahoma State University and couldn't be prouder and happier for a very good film about a very historic Coach and athletic event. Please be advised that Don's whole 1966 team was just inducted into the new Collegiate Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Missouri. Buy it, you will like it...!
An Autobiography That Needs To Be Read.......2006-11-30
In one of those quirky moments in the book and movie industries, the autobiography of coach Don Haskins was already "in the pipeline" before the development of the picture.
The book and movie share the title - Glory Road - which is a name of a street on the UTEP campus to commemorate the championship basketball season.
The book obviously gives a more fuller picture of Haskins and does not solely focus on the monumental victory by Texas Western College (UTEP) over Kentucky in the 1966 NCAA Finals. There will be areas "filled-in" where the movie takes artistic license with some facts/scenes to push the plot along.
The years after the title run are especially interesting, since the basketball program somewhat faded from national view as the sport became a multi-billion-dollar industry.
It is a shame that history - especially when it comes to matters of race - oftentimes become blurry as the years lumber forward. Though Haskins has always downplayed his role in what was a defining moment on the court of race & athletics, he truly deserved the attention from the national platform that propelled the book to national bestseller status.
The lessons learned along that glory road are as important today as they were 40 years ago.
Glory Road.......2006-07-10
I had great service arrived just in time for fathers day and my father went to UTEP during the duration of the book so it made for a great fathers day present and the service from amazon was awsome thanks alot amazon.
AN AMAZING BOOK.......2006-06-08
Glory Road is a very expiring book. I like how it tells people how it was for African American people to play professional basketball and it helps understand teamwork.
I thought it was very cool how they told you what white people did to black people. One part of the book one of the black players goes to the bathroom and two white guys jump him and beat him up. Thats how rotten people can be to others just because of their skin color.
There is a lot of teamwork in this book also. At the end of the novel the coach tells the players only black people will be playing in the championship and the white guys cheer them on. The team had a rough time in the beginning because of the skin color but by the end they worked it out and won. That shows true teamwork.

Book Description
John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury was the last of the celebrated English commanders of the Hundred Years' War. In his lifetime his reputation for audacity and courage gave him an unrivalled fame among the English, and he was feared and admired by the French. A.J. Pollard, in this pioneering and perceptive account, reconstructs the long career of this extraordinary soldier and offers a fascinating insight into warfare in the late medieval period. Talbot was the last representative of generations of brave, brutal warriors whose appetite for glory and personal gain had sustained English policy in France since the time of Edward III. His defeat and death at the Battle of Castillon on 17 July 1453 marked the end of the wars. It was also the final act in a heroic but savage tradition.
Book Description
"Masterful.... Blind Spot is an excellent reminder of the value of unbiased scholarship in an environment of poisonous political partisanship." (The New Republic)
In this revelatory new account, national security expert Timothy Naftali relates the full story of America's decades-long attempt to fight terrorism. On September 11, 2001, a long history of failures and missteps came to a head, with tragic results. But, explains Naftali, it didn't have to be so. Blind Spot traces the long history of American efforts to thwart terrorism, from World War II to the Munich Games hostage-taking to the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993. In riveting detail, based on original research and interviews with the key participants, Naftali describes why our early successes in counterterrorism did not translate into success against Osama bin Laden later in the 1990s, and why, until 9/11, the domestic threat of terrorism was the largest blind spot in United States national security.
"Blind Spot is that rare phenomenon: a great work of original research on a subject of great importance that is also lucidly written." (Wall Street Journal)
"An engaging and impressively comprehensive history of American counterterrorism.... [It] should become essential reading as we chart our way forward." (Commentary)
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but doesn't rise above partisan bias.......2007-06-28
This book takes an interesting approach to the issue of counterterrorism, going back to WWII times and giving good historical background. Perhaps the topic is a little too broad, but the book lacks detail that has been published in other sources and little that is new. The biggest problem is that the author will gladly include any innuendo or single-source comment that is critical of a Republican president, but conveniently leaves out similar criticism of Democrats. Most notably in the case of Clinton, he leaves out the fact that Clinton was offered bin Ladin (Clinton has admitted this) but refused. The author also ignores accusations by numerous individuals close to Clinton about his failure to focus on terrorism or take opportunities to get bin Ladin. The fact that he just omits these references rather than rebutting them if he disagrees, implies a certain bias. Rather disappointing, but well-written and quite readable.
Sound Familar?.......2006-10-12
It would probably be useful to potential readers to explain what this book is not before discussing what it is. It is not a "secret history" in any sense nor is it a diatribe against either the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) or the Executive Branch of government. The book is a sober and sobering history of how the U.S. has dealt with issues of State and non-State terrorism from World War II through the catastrophe of September 11 2001. Naftali also does a great service by noting the obvious similarities between the operating techniques of counter-Espionage and counter Terrorism (especially domestic).
In this book Naftali chronicles the failure of our political and national security systems to effectively protect American lives and property from terrorist threats. Naftali does record those rare successes against individual terrorists such as Abu Nidal, but the thrust of his book is that on the whole we have had difficulty countering terrorism in any form. He gives a fairly detailed case study of the series of terrorist attacks against U.S. personal in Lebanon during 1983-1984. The perpetrators of these attacks were members of Hezbollah, a Shia terrorist organization sponsored by Iran and enabled by Syria. In the case of the bombing of the U.S. Beirut Embassy in 1984 as it turned out, if the CIA had reviewed its available evidence, especially imagery they would have seen that a mock up of the U.S. Embassy had been constructed and was being used to train for car bomb attacks against the real thing. This is not a matter of "connecting the dots"; it is a matter of knowing the target (in this case Hezbollah) and building rational indications lists. In the fallout from this series of disasters, the redoubtable Charlie Allen, a long time CIA employee, called attention to the existence of this imagery (hind site is always 20/20). As a result Allen was named the new National Intelligence Officer (NIO) for counter-Terrorism. To his credit, Allen almost immediately tried to make information sharing a part of IC culture by connecting all concerned agencies directly with the CIA center for photo interpretation. Needless to say the IC culture than as now was largely opposed to sharing anything and Allen's efforts came to naught. In the couple of chapters of this book Naftali does chronicle the efforts by the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations to deal with the terrorist threat posed by the Osama bin Laden movement. Neither comes off very well in this, but the Bush administration comes off as the most indifferent, at least prior to 9/11.
This reviewer would recommend that prior to reading this book; interested readers should read "Inside Terrorism" by Bruce Hoffman to understand all the different manifestation of terrorism.
Counterterrorism Prior to 911.......2006-03-23
I found Blind Spot to be a refreshing look at terrorism prior to when it became a sexy topic.
Blind Spot is a highly informative tome on what was happening in this country in terms of terrorism pre 911. It takes you from the early days in August 1969 when Palestinian terrorists hijacked TWA Flight 840 to the current battle with Al Qaeda. Having worked on the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States or as you all will be more familure with the 911 Commission he knows that which he speaks.
If you want to learn what your US Government was doing about terrorism prior to 911 then this is the book you need to click on and proceed straight to the check out page.
Straight-ahead history of modern U.S. counter-terrorism.......2005-11-10
This is an excellent compilation of the various U.S. government responses to the threat of terrorism, starting with the end of WWII and continuing up to 9/11. It wins a "5" on timeliness, "4s" on content and writing, down-graded mainly because of puny policy recommendations. It was especially valuable to me in pointing out how vulnerable we are during the periodic interregums, as new Presidents and their minions attempt to put their own stamps on government. It was more valuable pointing out the difficulties successive Presidents and their staffs faced in trying to get authority to conduct the kinds of operations that seem to be necessary to fight terrorist acts. The tension between freedom from government scrutiny and the freedom from terrorism posed insurmountable obstacles before 2001. Finding the appropriate balance remains a key issue for this country.
Robust review of history of U.S. counterterrorism policy.......2005-11-08
While many recent works on terrorism focus almost exclusively on the most recent incarnation (Islamic jihadists), Naftali reviews the much broader historical counterterrorism landscape. Perhaps most interesting is the historical parallel he draws between the difficult decisions the Clinton and Bush II administrations faced prior to 9-11 and those faced by the Johnson and Nixon administrations. The author does a tremendous job of reinforcing that terrorism and U.S. efforts to combat it are nothing new, and that policymakers often find themselves faced with the same difficult decisions and repeating the same mistakes as their predecessors. Those readers who wish to read more than this book offers about counterterrorism policy since the late 1990s should read Steve Coll's Ghost Wars and Peter Bergen's Holy War, Inc.

Bald Eagles
Their life and behavior in North America
Photographs by Art Wolfe
Text by Donald F. Bruning
The bald eagle is America's national bird. Protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, this bird had made a steady recovery from near extinction. It is fitting for our heritage that Art Wolfe has devoted his photographic talents to capturing bald eagles on film. His large color photographs show the bald eagles from chicks in nests to adults in full plumage, including their mating rituals, their migrations, and, finally, their release into the wild after captivity.
Donald F. Bruning's text covers superbly the scientific and ornithological aspects of the bald eagle; their habits in Canada, Alaska, and the continental United States; as well as the effects of the Fish and Wildlife Service and other conservation agencies to preserve and increase the species.
