Book Description
The American elm, elegant and highly adaptable, was an essential feature of America's cultural landscape for more than a century, forming great verdant parasols aboveand giving its name tostreets all across the nation. The elm became a defining element in the spatial design of America's villages, towns, and cities, first in New England, andwith the westward transit of Yankee cultureeventually throughout the United States. This fascinating and generously illustrated book traces the elm's transformation from a fast-growing weed into a regional and national icon, and shows how Elm Street satisfied America's quest for a pastoral urbanism imagined since the time of Jefferson.

Fantastic theme and wonderful story telling!!.......2005-01-23
When I first saw this book I was intrigued by the title and could not wait to read it. The introduction almost made me cry. This book is truely a wonderful and entertaining read. Everyone, from botanist to a person who couldn't tell an elm from an oak should read this book. It ties horticulture, American history, and botany together in a fascinating way. I could not stop reading this once I started. Campanella brings his reader from the colonial and early American love affair with the elm to modern disease breeding. I honestly recomend this book to any one wanting to learn about a fascinating and untold story. Fantastic!!

Customer Reviews:
Yuck.......2006-05-22
With all the sentimentality of the past two volumes out of the way, Berserk really gets down and dirty with this, the eleventh volume of this bloody and violent series. In this volume, nothing is held back; it's almost getting to the point where I'm thinking there has to be something wrong with me for enjoying this series so much to this point. Yes, early on I was disappointed by Berserk because of some of the content (the child molestation scene in volumes three and four) but now, even with a graphic rape and dismemberment scene, it seems Berserk can do no wrong to me. Thankfully, I'm still cheering for the good guys so I can't be all messed up in the head; I couldn't wait for Guts to get revenge for the poor girl who had to go through the scene mentioned above. Plus, the story is heating up and adding things that weren't found in the anime, which is always good.
This volume starts only moments after Guts and friends escape from Midland Castle with Griffith, now only a husk, and they are being hunted by a mercenary group almost as famous as the Band of the Hawk, the Knight of the Black Dog, made up entirely of criminals with a leader who is... less than human, I'll say. Most of this volume centers around the remaining members of the Band of Hawk's battle with the Black Dog Knights, and with Guts's battle with their powerful leader. The action in this volume is intense and is almost entirely new to what the anime was, and is getting to the point where the anime had ended.
It's amazing to me that a series that has continued this long hasn't entered a state of complete stupidity that other long-running manga or anime has (see any of the Shonen Jump titles for this). Everything is still tied tightly to the main story, and rarely does it ever stray. Berserk is just an amazing manga, as it is well-written, artistically drawn, and horrifying. Though for a time I was in doubt, I'm now sure that this is still my favorite manga out. Chances are, if you're reading this, you're familiar with the Berserk franchise, so I probably don't need to recommend this... but I will anyways. Get this volume, and any other that came out before or after this.
Dark, violent, and worth reading.......2006-05-02
Volume 11 of Kentaro Miura's medieval fantasy epic Berserk sets the stage for the end of the "Golden Age" story arc and the beginnings of the "Retribution" arc. This volume focuses primarily on action (e.g. fantastic fight sequences, especially between Guts and Wyald, a character introduced in volume 10) rather than advancing the Berserk plot, and Miura succeeds admirably. The supernatural elements introduced in the first several volumes (the "Black Swordsman" flashback arc) but muted during the "Golden Age" are starting to intrude upon the human realm once again and threatening to engulf the world of Guts.
The review mentioning hentai is bit misleading: there is arguably no gratuitous sex in volume 11 that you would expect to find in hentai. While the images may excite some readers, I believe that Miura included nudity/sex that you find in volume 11 (and also in other volumes) to demonstrate the depravity of certain situations and characters.

Love is... is finally back! What is great about this calendar is that you have a new love is panel for each day. You will see old favorites and probably some you missed. (The weekends share one panel.) After you turn the date over you can cut out the panel and place it in a scrapbook. At the end of the year you will have over 300 great love is panels to look at for years to come. I've already purchased several calendars for gifts for friends just to share the love. You will not be disappointed with this Love is calendar.

Book Description
The Nazis saw film as a major vehicle for both indoctrination and escapist pacification of the masses; in fact, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels tried to create a German counter-Hollywood. This highly acclaimed study, by one of Germanys leading commentators and authors on cultural policy, analyses the pictorial and spoken language of the various film genres in the Third Reich, including news reels, documentaries, feature and cultural films. It shows how a powerful and sinister propaganda machine emerged which, by deploying a wide range of psychological techniques, exerted a strong fascination on the masses. These methods were so successful that they continue to serve as models for totalitarian rgimes to this day.

Book Description
In 2004 Rebecca Horn created Light Imprisoned in the Belly of the Whale, a work that incorporated passages of poetry as a sculptural element within a room-filling installation of words and sentences projected onto a black, reflective sheet of water. Horn's collaborator on the project was the New Zealand-based composer Hayden Chisholm, who infused the pictorial space with sound, lending an acoustic dimension to the poetic narrative. The artists have collaborated on other projects, including Spiriti di Madreperla (2003) and Moon Mirror (2004). Music for Rebecca Horn's Installations gives those who witnessed Horn and Chisholm's collaborations an opportunity to re-live their visual and acoustic experience. This publication consists of two CDs in plastic sleeves with recordings of Horn's poems for Spiriti de Madreperla and Moon Mirror, which are set to music and sung in several languages. A 16-page booklet depicts the installations in color photographs, and includes 2 CDs.

The basic smart course in sales techniques.......2006-09-01
Seldom is a book as aptly named as Selling 101. This is a true primer on the ABC's of selling. Author and sales expert Zig Ziglar walks you through the sales process, teaching you how to find prospects, overcome "call reluctance," pose the right questions and ask for the order. He touches on all of the fundamentals, using examples from his experiences to illustrate his main points. His brief, concise prose is easy to understand and even easier to incorporate into your sales practices. The seasoned sales professional will not find anything new in this basic textbook, but we recommend it to anyone who is new to selling, particularly if you lack a mentor to give you this kind of guidance. This handy manual will provide know-how that is usually gained only by experience in the field.
Decent sales starter or refresher.......2006-08-18
Good short book if you are looking for something basic. There is certainly nothing dynamic, but Ziglar hits several points right on and gives a nice overview.
Book Description
In this, one of the year's most compelling biographies, Robert Wilson paints a brilliant portrait of Clarence King -- a scientist-explorer whose mountain-scaling, desert-crossing, river-fording, blizzard-surviving adventures helped create the new West of the nineteenth century.
A sort of Howard Hughes of the 1800s, Clarence King in his youth was an icon of the new America: a man of both action and intellect, who combined science and adventure with romanticism and charm. The Explorer King vividly depicts King's amazing feats and also uncovers the reasons for the shocking decline he suffered after his days on the American frontier.
The Yale-educated King went west in 1863 at age twenty-one as a geologist-explorer. During the next decade he scaled the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada, published a popular book now considered a classic of adventure literature, initiated a groundbreaking land survey of the American West, and ultimately uncovered one of the greatest frauds of the century -- the Great Diamond Hoax, a discovery that made him an international celebrity at a time when they were few and far between.
Through King's own rollicking tales, some true, some embroidered, of scaling previously unclimbed mountain peaks, of surviving a monster blizzard near Yosemite, of escaping ambush and capture by Indians, of being chased on horseback for two days by angry bandits, Robert Wilson offers a powerful combination of adventure, history, and nature writing. He also provides the bigger picture of the West at this time, showing the ways in which the terrain of the western United States was measured and charted and mastered, and how science, politics, and business began to intersect and influence one another during this era. Ultimately, King himself would come to symbolize the collision of science and business, possibly the source of his downfall.
Fascinating and extensive, The Explorer King movingly portrays the America of the nineteenth century and the man who -- for better or worse -- typified the soul of the era.
Customer Reviews:
Great trip into the times of Clarence King.......2007-06-25
This book does not discuss in much detail the USGS and the second half of Clarence's life but it places you in the times of King and during some of the most interesting parts of his adventures in the West. I really enjoyed the book and found that the author created an interesting angle by carefully reviewing King's upbringing, religious beliefs and how he squared his religious convictions with an education and career in science during the mid 1800s.
This is not a historical tome but a fairly light read where the author keeps the material interesting. It is like a rock skipping over the surface of his life. A good read that leaves me hoping others will write additional books to tell other parts of his story.
A major disappointment.......2006-04-03
As a geographer with an interest in the opening of the west I looked forward the this book. Unfortunately it is poorly written and repetitious, and half-way through King's life the author appears to lose interest in the subject. There is nothing about the rivalry between King's Survey and the other great surveys led by Powell, Hayden and Wheeler that lead to the establishment of the U. S. Geological Survey. Nor is there any mention of the political fighting between King and Ferdinand Hayden that led to King's selection as the first director of that agency. A major disappointment.
Written Like a Doctoral Thesis.......2006-03-28
For me, this book was an introduction to the daring and storied adventurer scientists of the mid-nineteenth century. I bought it with great anticipation and, after reading the dust jacket, I began with a novice's eagerness on a journey of which I knew little. The first chapter was set in Washington D.C., after all of King's great adventures had been accomplished, in the parlor of Henry and Clover Adams accompanied by their usual guests and friends, Clarence King and John and Clara Hay. These five were such fast friends that they were referred to in the inner circles of Washington as the Five of Hearts. And the glue that held them together was King himself, with his great raconteur tales and his abundant charm. Adams called him the most remarkable man in their circle--tremendous praise considering Adam's circle of friends.
What a unique way to establish your protagonist and to whet the reader's appetite for the adventure to come.
Unfortunately the first chapter is as good as this book gets. It is not that the story is not worth reading. For the most part it is. One learns a great deal about geology, surveying, the geography and topology of the West, and the sense of adventure that any white explorer felt in going into these new, wild and dangerous territories. It is that the telling of the story turns flat--never matching, or coming close, to the rip-roaring story telling, charismatic, fast living, adventure filled life of Clarence King. The book is a polite scholastic treatment, if you will. It reminds the reader not of a book, but rather, of a dissertation.
If this were not enough, the author devotes only three pages of the last chapter to the surreptitious last half of King's life and his marriage to a black woman who bore him five children. This relationship he kept secret to the world, with only his most devoted friends having an awareness. This would have been fertile ground to develop even more the complex character and turmoiled person that was King. The author, however chooses to pass by this last 29 years of King's life; instead retreating into the scholastic realm with which the author is most comfortable--the retelling and analysis of a speech that King made at Yale, his alma mater. With this, the book abruptly ends.
It is like a Doctoral student who doesn't quite know how to end his thesis and submits it to the jury of peers hoping that it will be enough. I don't think that it would have earned the degree.
great story about a little-known explorer.......2006-03-06
This book caught my attention from the very beginning, first linking King with the 19th century Washington DC social and political establishment and then telling how he made his way out West in a time when that journey was an adventure in itself. It was fascinating to learn how King, whom I'd never heard of, was the first to scale and then name many of California's highest peaks. Having grown up in California, hiking, camping and skiing in the Sierras, I loved reading about the familiar towns and geography and learning how Clarence King was such a factor in that area's history. Some great accounts. A shame that King had so much going for him and then gave in to temptation in the end.
Book Description
The fourth edition of this classic text continues its popular interdisciplinary approach to the topic of leadership, by examining the elements of military leadership from the perspective of contributors in the fields of history, business, religion, politics, and education. The fourth edition presents a broad spectrum of ideas and perspectives relating to military leadership in the current environment. It includes multinational views reflecting the global military stage. This new edition synthesizes classic pieces from the second and third editions with contemporary readings to provide the reader with important insights into the concepts of military leadership throughout the vagaries of regional conflict and maintenance of peace. The resulting synthesis stimulates the reader to understand the complex dynamics of effective leadership in the context of military history, values, and culture.
Book Description
Among politicians of national stature today, there is perhaps none more respected as a principled conservative than Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA). In It Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Good, his first book, Santorum articulates the humane vision that he believes must inform public policy if it is to be effective and just. An appreciation for the civic bonds that unite a community lies at the heart of genuine conservatism. Moreover, Senator Santorum demonstrates how such an approach to political, social, and economic problems offers the most promise for those on the margin of life: the poor, the vulnerable, and minorities who have often been excluded from opportunity in America.
Santorum argues that conservative statesmanship is animated by a sense of stewardship for an inheritance. But what do we inherit as Americans? And how can we be good stewards of that inheritance? Building on Robert Putnam’s discussion of “social capital,” the habits of association and trust that are the preconditions of any decent society, Santorum assesses how well, in the past generation, Americans have cared for the “fabric” of society. He explores in detail various dimensions of social and cultural connection that are the foundation of the common good. And he presents innovative policy proposals for the renewal of American society at all levels.
Throughout his book, Santorum emphasizes the central role of the family—in contradistinction to the metaphorical “village” of the federal government, as promoted by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton—in achieving the common good. With a sustained argument touching on first principles throughout, this ambitious and original book is a major contribution to contemporary political debate. It Takes a Family will further establish Senator Santorum as the leader of reform-minded civic conservatives in America.
Customer Reviews:
It Takes a Family, Supported by the Village.......2007-04-22
As per Rick Santorum, "Throughout this book, ...I will be discussing different types of 'captial' and how family breakdown - out-of-wedlock births, divorce, cohabitation, and absentee parenthood - has depleted that capital in recent decades. For it sometimes happens that the patrimony we inherit has not been well cared for by the immediately previous generation....The village elders don't seem to understand that a stable marriage is the greatest protection for children and the most powerful energizer of their success....Ten years after a marriage breaks up, research has shown that approximately two-thirds of children report that they haven't seen their father for over a year....Marriage matters because children matter....The conservative solution to the problems of low-income America, is to structure all our programs around the family, to work with the family rather than against it....In developing my understanding of social policy, I have learned a lot from the tradition of Catholic social thought. In that tradition, there is an important concept called subsidiarity, the principal that all social challenges should be addressed at the level of the smallest social unit possible, preferably the family" (pp. 9 - 68).
A Decent Discussion of the Platitude "Compassionate" Conservatism.......2007-04-15
It is often said that Conservatism is nothing more than a home for vipers and hatemongers. I do not think that is the case at all, although fighting against that grain is difficult in a society which has taken all pains to convince us of the evils of men like Rick Santorum. Santorum's book proffers the now-trite form of conservatism known as "compassionate" conservatism, an adage which has become the primary banner of the contemporary Republican Party.
In many ways, Santorum's ideas propose solutions which are palpable to bigger-government thinkers. The book is mostly a platform for reflecting on two things: (1) The centrality of freely-associated bonds over top-down governance and (2) The role of government in redeveloping this. By its very nature, (1) is incontrovertible when placed against the hard facts of reality as we live. The world works ground-up and no other way. It is (2) that is more exposing of Santorum, for it proves that a "conservative" Republican is capable of thinking like a "compassionate liberal" in many of his governmental policies.
However, my positive assessment of the text ends here. I have great qualms about anything that lauds "compassionate conservatism" as though conservatism is, in its roots, uncompassionate. In many ways it is a farce which only tries to play on words for political power. Additionally, it does a great disservice to conservative governmental ideals which must play a role in the reform (or truly revolution) of government. In many ways, Santorum's ideas become platitudinous and also deny the reality of the multifarious problems facing an ever-expanding federal government.
While he does redirect all of his policy efforts toward the edification of the family, I believe that he makes the error of bowing to the label of "compassionate conservatism" in an attempt to place a bandage on a culture which may indeed need a revolution, not mere reform. In spite of my disappointments, much truth lies in his assessment of the centrality of the individual and family, so I give the text 3-3.5/5 stars.
Veritas!.......2007-01-22
In, It Takes a Family, Rick Santorum successfully provides a picture of the last forty years of American history in light of the founders' vision for the republic. While the founders envisioned a national community and communities, each possessing specific functions, today, we are overcome by top-down directed society.
Santorum sets out to explain the fundamental differences in the liberal and conservative visions for America. In drawing a dichotomy, he defines the liberal vision as one of the "Bigs" and "Village Elders," and the conservative vision as one of families. Santorum defines the Bigs as the big universities and public schools, big businesses, big national labor unions, big news media, big entertainment, and the federal government. He then provides instances of how the liberal vision and its projects have failed America. For example, he argues that the liberal idea of "no-fault freedom," a freedom that celebrates the individual above the community, is key in the decline in social capital, the increases in absentee parents, divorce, out of wedlock pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, abortions, and many other ills plaguing American society today. In contrast, he argues that the conservative idea of societal engagement through families, civic and fraternal associations, clubs, churches, and small businesses, provides a common-sense and effective approach to combating the effects of the failed liberal project. Further, he contends the conservative approach provides a way to sustain the American republic.
Santorum not only points out the shortcomings of the liberal project for America, but he scornfully rebukes conservatives for dismissing Americans who are poor, disadvantaged, and less well off. He argues that the failure to practice fundamental American ideas has increased the power of the Bigs and that Americans must now, and forever, work through families to provide the commonsense and equitable alternative to the liberal project.
Unsurprisingly, in response to the failed liberal programs such as no-strings-attached welfare, no-fault divorce, and promotion of relativism in public schools, he argues for an increase in welfare to work programs, assistance to first time homebuyers, assistance to disadvantaged parents, promotion of marriage, and school choice. Also, he presents examples of these and many other programs that are either on or getting on the conservative agenda.
Santorum does a good job in highlighting the trials and tribulations of poor and low-income Americans and proposes many commonsense policies to mitigate their plight. With the exception of dividing the liberal and conservative visions for America, he does not divide Americans into an Us vs. Them dichotomy. He promotes the idea that although liberal ideas were well-intentioned and have led to serious problems, we Americans are all in this together. We are responsible for each other and we must be good stewards of ourselves, our neighbors, our community, and our country.
I think this book will be helpful for those raising families as well as those who are single.
Politicians who think they are writers need to think again.......2007-01-19
Boring and out of touch describes this book by Santorum. I am a Republican, and I can honestly say that I am glad he is out of office.
bye bye Ricky Rat.......2006-12-17
Hooray - may Sick Rantorum find out just how cold it is in the world that thinks men who say mothers with limited incomes need to learn "struggling is not necessarily a bad thing" belong in. Happy struggling, Ricky Rat, ye who gave yourself pay raises while fighting attempts to increase minimum wage, who declared his sympathy for fighting AIDS in Africa but compared gays to "man on dog sex." My guess is you won't be on U2's guest list much longer, despite trying to link your campaign to Bono's good works.
One of my favorite moments of an evening of viewing CNN's election coverage was watching that pompous gasbag Bill Bennet melt into a pile of foul-looking disgust as his neocon creepies got voted out one by one and the balance of the power in the House was declared Democrat. May these hateful, intolerant, weasels choke upon their plate full of crow as the march to 2008 regime change gathers steam and join Sick Rantorum in history's dustbin of Neanderthals.
