Book Description
Our endless fascination with ancient Egypt owes much to the beauty of the tomb paintings, statuary, temple reliefs, and other magnificent artworks that are the legacy of this remarkable culture. But despite the multitude of objects and texts that have survived, questions abound, particularly about the true role of women in Egyptian society. This wonderfully illustrated, brilliantly researched book draws on unpublished material from author Zahi Hawass' own excavations as well as new analyses of older evidence to penetrate the silent images and paint an astonishing picture of women's lives.
Hawass contrasts the stereotype-inspired by such symbols of femininity as the queens Nefertiti and Nefertari-with a more realistic view of the common woman's everyday involvement in matters ranging from family life to dress and adornment to the workplace and the legal system. Lavish photographs of places and objects, many made especially for this book, round out an enthralling, richly textured work. ZAHI HAWASS is a world-renowned archaeologist. He is director of the Giza Pyramids and field director of the Bahariya Oasis excavation, as well as a frequent lecturer around the world. He has written books on the pyramids and on kingship in ancient Egypt, and his articles have been published widely. He teaches archaeology at Cairo University and the University of California at Los Angeles.

Book Description
"Why Don't You . . .
tie black tulle bows on your wrists?
have a yellow satin bed entirely quilted in butterflies?
remember how delicious champagne cocktails are after tennis or golf? Indifferent champagne can be used for these."
For more than half a century, Diana Vreeland, doyenne of American fashion, beguiled, awed, astonished, and was adored by almost anyone who created or wore clothes.
Irresistible and flamboyant, socialite Mrs. T. Reed Vreeland began her now legendary twenty-five-year tenure at Harper's Bazaar writing a column of audacious advice: extravagant ideas that helped redefine American women and twentieth-century fashion. Her commentary created a fashion frenzy when it began appearing in Harper's Bazaar in 1936. Her ideas were simultaneously stylish and outrageous, and have as much appeal today as they did decades ago.
Here for the first time, John Esten has compiled one hundred of Mrs. Vreeland's kaleidoscopic "Why Don't You . . . ?" suggestions, and paired them with the breathtaking works of such renowned photographers and artists as Munkacsi, Dahl-Wolfe, Hoyningen-Heune, and Bérard, which further capture the dazzling legacy of whimsy, elegance, and style of Mrs. Vreeland's Bazaar years.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful read..........2006-05-17
This book is something to read on a rainy day. It is beautifully put together and very mood uplifting. The suggestions do not seem all that outrageous to me and indeed could add that very necessary flair or as Diana would say PIZAZZ to your life. I love her suggestions for interior decorating. She talks about the pursuit of the perfect RED. How lovely to imagine living a life where your most important concerns are finding the perfect RED. And yes this book is probably for people who are already fans of Diana. Great pictures too.

Why don't you?.......2005-03-26
My only qualm: I wish there'd been more "Why don't you...?"s. Frankly, I couldn't get enough of them:
"Why don't you have your cigarettes stamped with a personal insignia as a well-known explorer did with a penguin?"
"Why don't you rinse your blond child's hair in dead champagne to keep its gold, as they do in France?"
"Why don't you wear violet velvet mittens with everything?"
Indeed, why don't I?
This slim book far outshines its company in the Diana Vreeland library, and especially "Allure," a gigantic coffee table book with photographs that appear to have been digitized with a $20 scanner.
For the Connoisseur.......2002-05-17
Of course, you must know and love Mrs. Vreeland to be here in the first place. Given that you do, buy this book. Don't expect a compendium of her suggestions and aphorisms. Do expect a delightful hour's browse. Well worth the money.
What a pretty book!.......2002-01-19
Any info on D.V. is exciting to me. This pretty book is filled with great photos and listing of all the "Why Don't You" articles created by Diana during her days at Harpers. If you are a fan of Diana Vreeland (as I am) you must add this book to your collection.
it's FABULOUS, daaaaarling!.......2001-12-26
I LOVED this book. Diana Vreeland's "Why don't you..." suggestions are absolutely wild. They're obviously intended for women of *great* means (why don't you give a diamond bracelet as a gift to the wife of your favorite bandleader?). And some of the suggestions are so out there, I swear she was chewing magic mushrooms. My favorite is the suggestion to put in a private staircase from your bedroom to the library, and have it carpeted with a needlepoint rug that spells out the notes to your favorite tune. My god, you're right, I'll do that tomorrow!!
This book is great to read out loud at a party.
the strange thing is, I am not sure if it's intentionally funny. The author clearly admires Vreeland, and it's a very affectionate book with wonderful photographs.
It is definitely a great glimpse at another era, and at a level of society I can only imagine. To have the kind of money that allows you to do some of these things is beyond my wildest dreams. It's a fun fantasy trip, and a fun retro trip. Five stars.

The Italian-American Christmas Eve tradition comes to life in this popular online comic strip collected here for the first time, complete with a foreword by Steve Geppi and a cookbook for serving up your own Feast!

I'M STILL SMILING.......2007-01-03
What a great little book. I loved the story of this Italian family and their Christmas feast. Sadly a lot of our family traditions are becoming obsolete. Maybe this book will help revive them. I really enjoyed the recipes and intend on trying a few. Although an avid reader I have never been a big fan of comic strips, but was truly entertained by this one.
Kudos to the authors and the artists. Very well done. Think you will enjoy it as much as I did.
2006 EISNER AWARD Nominee For Best Graphic Album - Reprint.......2006-12-02
I discovered this book when I heard it had been nominated for an Eisner Award (the "Oscar" of comics) for best graphic album - reprint.
Initially I was interested in it for the story and art - but the cookbook and essay sections were a real pleasant surprise. It's one of those great little books you want to bring out and put on the coffee table during the holidays. This is what my whole family is getting for Christmas. It would make a great movie too...
A wonderful christmas present - for young and old.......2006-11-14
I am not Italian. But this makes for a great Christmas gift.
For once, the story is great. A hysterically traditional Italian American Christmas Eve celebration that anyone with a family will appreciate. Grandpa Johnny Oliverio is a riot.
Comics tell the story which makes the book hard to put down. It's also what makes this a unique gift. Part history, part comics, part cookbook - all fun.
By the time you get done reading about grandpa Oliverio's cooking, all you want to do is try it yourself. The recipe section at the end of the book comes at a perfect time.
Buon Natale.
Learn about the Italians of Appalachia.......2006-11-12
This book has it all - a great story, great visuals, and mouth-watering recipes. Anyone who loves the films of my friend Les Blank, a recent winner of an international food film award for "Yum, Yum, Yum", would also love this graphic novel. I also greatly enjoyed it because it presents a different view of Appalachia where it takes place. As the programmer for The Clarksburg Italian Heritage Film Festival for twenty years, I know that there are great Italian-Americans in Appalachia, not just NYC and other eastern cities.
Presently a person from the same town, Fairmont, WV, is the popular governor of West Virginia, Governor Manchin, who also happens to be the first Catholic governor of a mostly Protestant state. JFK's primary victory in 1964 in WV proved he could win over Protestants. Hopefully Gov. Manchin will place copies of this book in all of WV's libraries - like Gov. Underwood did with copies of Homer Hickham's book and film of "October Sky."
I also hope that someone will make a good film version of this book - maybe author Robert Tinnell himself, who has made many films in his past life. John Sayles' great film "Matewan" had some Italians in it, challenging the usual Anglo stereotype of Appalachia. A popular film would help teach the world that Appalachia is a multi-cultural region.

Genuinely Funny Guy.......2006-09-07
One of the many humorous pictures is Yakov Smirnoff hunching over a roulette table with the caption "I like the American version of roulette much better!" Another has him in front of an "OPEN HOUSE" sign with the caption: "No wonder there are so many burglaries in America!" They're funnier when you're physically seeing them, of course, which is why you must pick up a copy of this sadly passed over hidden treasure. He genuinely loves this country, the country that gave him refuge from the USSR. Astoundingly funny political humor, but Smirnoff never becomes political. He's simply trying to make you laugh, and he succeeds.
Absolutely hilarious! BRING BACK THE COLD WAR!.......2003-03-11
Someone recently gave me a used copy of this book and I couldn't stop laughing. Even though cold war politics are outdated, you should still get most of these jokes, it is just FUNNY.

get a life.......2003-09-13
Hi, author here. This attack on me has been sitting on the web for five years and I'm bored with it. The author of the attack is either a member of the Pet Shop Boys or one of their friends. He - and it's definitely a he - is also a liar. And inaccurate. If he thinks there are 'major' gay figures I left out of QN then maybe he should name them. Yes, the book was personal, because that's what the publishers asked me for. If I left anyone out it was because I didn't think they were interesting. And if he can name another book that covered the material I covered and before I did so, I'll eat a copy of QN in public.
And as for the reader coming from 'Funchal, Madeira', if a copy of QN ever reached Funchal and made it into a bookshop, then I'm Ida Lupino... J.
Not worth the money.......1998-11-13
Gill's serves up a tired helping of warmed-over tidbits about many figures in American jazz and pop music prior to the late 60s. All of them have been printed elsewhere, and some of the major gay figures he misses completely. British classical music gets a lick and a promise, as it were, until Gill gets to the subject that Gill likes best: GILL, who Gill knows in the Brit rock scene, who Gill thinks is a self-hating gay shite, Gill's greatest almost-brushes with the rich and famous, etc., etc.......yawn. If you are the other member of the John Gill fan club, you'll love this book. If not, skip it. It's a book for easily impressed gay Gen-Xers.

Have you ever hired someone only to regret your decision two months later? Or looked at your financial portfolio and wondered why you bought the stocks you did? In Smart Choices, authors John S. Hammond, Ralph L. Keeney, and Howard Raiffa take the guesswork out of the decision-making process and offer a systematic approach to making the right choice. Most of us have problems making decisions, because we've never learned how. The authors write:
Despite the importance of decision making to our lives, few of us ever receive any training in it. So we are left to learn from experience. But experience is a costly, inefficient teacher that teaches us bad habits along with good ones. Because decision situations vary so markedly, the experience of making one important decision often seems of little use when facing the next.
Smart Choices outlines eight elements involved in making the right decision, from identifying exactly what the decision is and specifying your objectives to considering risk tolerance and looking at how what you decide on today influences what you may decide in the future. The book is full of real-life situations and scenarios that effectively illustrate each element of a good decision. If you think the topic of making the right choice is mundane or a simple matter of common sense, then think again. Smart Choices will relieve you of the regret that so many of us carry because we didn't know how to "think it through." --Harry C. Edwards

If you want to know about decision making and want to understand everything that is written, buy this one. Very good.
great book and easy read.......2007-08-26
I was assigned to read this book for a class, but I LOVED it. The book is about making good choices in your life. I have since bought many other copies for co-workers, friends and family. This book is an easy read and very enlightening. I loved a line from the end of the book that goes something like: "The decisions you make are the only control you have over your life - the rest just happens to you." Give this book a try!
Must Buy.......2007-04-02
This is an excellent book, i was amazed by it's clearity and reasoning. Chapter 6 is simply one of the best chapters in any book ever. Chapter 6 even has a letter written by Benjamin Franklin advising a friend on the steps to make in order to arise at the best decision.
great, easy read.......2007-01-16
This book is very understandable and easy to follow. I'm using it for a class but am taking notes to pass on to friends and family because I think the information is so valuable and anyone can benefit from it.
Practical!.......2006-08-01
With so many choices, choosing a book can be a daunting task. I'm glad that I chose to get Smart Choices and it was a great decision. This book shows in practical terms how to make the right decisions by defining the problem and exploring the various alternatives and their consequences. If you can't decide when you must, be guided by this book's authors and enjoy the basics of decision-making. Highly recommended!

The Warrior's Book!.......2007-05-07
This is one of the best books I have ever read! If you are competitive and like the bulls and have a strong sense of teamwork, this is the best book to read! All I wanted to do was watch the greatest seasons of the Bulls and those amazing playoffs and championships they won!
Michael Jordan meets Zen .......2007-01-04
If you are into spiritual exploration and you love watching basketball then you will find this an amazing book. This book captures beatutifully how you can apply Zen Buddhist philosophies to daily life (although maybe coaching Michael Jordan is not ordinary daily life ...). Especially interesting if you want to understand how you can use Zen Buddhism to stimulate teamwork. Sacred Hoops gave me many ideas on which to reflect. I highly recommend it.
Not just for basketball fans.......2006-08-15
As a yoga instructor and athletic trainer who works with professional athletes, I wish I had found this book sooner. I just read it and plan to reread it again. Amazing. Absolutely thought-provoking. You'll find yourself thinking about this one in the shower, just contemplating Phil's wisdom and how you can apply it to your own life. Anyone considering or presently on a path to spirituality and self awareness--no basketball interest or experience required--should read this book. If you want to gain a better understanding of the value of staying present in the moment, I urge you to pick up this book and let Phil Jackson enlighten you. If I ever decide to lead yoga teacher trainings in the future, this will be required reading! --Dana Edison, author and creator of "Dana Edison's Yoga Is Not One Size Fits All Custom Practice Journal" and audio instruction series.
It brought me peace........2006-03-18
When I was going through a very hard time in my life, my boxing trainer recommended I read this book. I'm not a basketball fan and am not normally into self-help books either. Phil Jackson takes the reader down a spiritual road that overlaps with his career as a professional basketball coach. I've found some of his techniques and philosophies have brought great mental peace to me, while the stories of the professional sports business were interesting and entertaining.
Brutally honest.......2006-03-16
If you like a teaspoon of New Age mumbo jumbo combined with a mustachioed author's psycho-babble, I suggest you check out Star Jones new book. Phil Jackson has had greatness thrust upon him. Michael Jordan, Stacey King, Kobe Bryant, and Shaq are the reason we know his name. Not his Jerry Garcia, Phoenix University degree, dimestore analysis of the spiritual side of coaching and people management. Make him the coach of the Trailblazers and see how great he is.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Changes in Fifteen Years.......2006-02-26
More than just a study of how the modern American military goes to war, this book is a study of the conflict in Iraq since Gulf I.
It covers the impact of the Goldwater-Nichols defense department reorganization that has worked wonders in reducing inter-service rivalry and which was first put to the test in Gulf I.
It covers the changes in munitions, equipment, training, recon that comprise the present day forces.
It is also the most complete story I've seen on what Saddam was doing during the gaps between Gulf I and Gulf II. You get the feeling that a local, not well educated or travelled person, focused on his own issues just couldn't see what his statements were saying to the rest of the world.
My only complaint is that the book ends just a little bit too early. There's not much on hos we are to get out of the mess that exists over there now. This is a book on how the military fights wars, not on how we conduct the peace afterwards.
Highly recommended.

"They misunderestimated me."President George W. Bush
It seems like too easy a target, too cheap a laugh, but Mark Crispin Miller, with the deftly trenchant wit that always distinguishes his writing, uses the blunders and malapropisms of George W. Bush to make a larger point about the way in which we elect our presidents. Miller places Bush in the context of other notorious dunces-in-chief, and shows him indisputably in a league of his own. The book is a raucously funny ridewhether it's Bush envisioning "a foreign-handed foreign policy" or Miller skewering vociferous cultural conservatives like William Bennett and Lynne Cheney for their silence on Bush's particular "West Texas version of Ebonics"but there is also a strong undercurrent of outrage. Only because our elections have become so dependent on television and its emphatic emptiness, Miller argues, can a man of such sublime and complacent ignorance assume the highest office in the land. To quote Bush himself, "It's not the way America is all about."
Customer Reviews:
Brain Damaged, Mildly Retarded or a Great Actor?.......2007-04-26
This is a somewhat amusing outdated book that mainly quotes various statements to spew from the mouth of one G.W Bush during the first year of his presidency.
It goes without saying for me that Bush has absolutely no input as to what decisions are made but the real question in my mind is if he has brain damage from the years of drug and alcohol abuse, is he drunk or high on acid while giving interviews and speeches, is he just that dumb or is he a great actor that is intentionally playing the role of inept moron in order to create a scapegoat to divert attention away from the real controllers?
For every conservative in your house. . ........2007-04-10
Wonderful. A close, intimate reading of the complex tapestry that is George Bush. Recommended for evangelical Christians, Oil Company executives, and NASCAR mommies and daddies who STILL believe.
Trenchant & Observant.......2007-04-08
When you actually listen to the things George W. Bush says, you might just wince at the barbarisms, mispronunciations of words and the poor grammar. "Misunderestimate" is one of Bush's most infamous to date. My personal favorite "Bushism" was one he made in or about 2000 in re imports. Bush actually said that "more and more of our imports are coming in from overseas." Where did he think imports were coming from, Boston? Good grief!
If nothing else, Bushisms do provide some comic relief during these times of strife and war. While I am no fan of this president and will be among the many who will call the emperor naked and his administration of the emperor's new clothing genre, I do get a kick out of some of his more outlandish comments. As for calling him an anti-intellectual, I beg to differ. I would have to say that instead of opposing intellectualism, Bush is out of the ballgame as he is certainly a far cry from an intellectual by anyone's reckoning. Gently put, he is not the brightest bulb in the lamp or the sharpest tool in the shed.
Was Bush a child who got left behind? This book includes quite a list of Bush's verbal gaffes and poorly contructed sentences. It makes you wonder why on earth the media panders to him - the emperor is naked, for Pete's sake!
This author claims Bush's verbal challenges are caused by dyslexia. His term "West Texas ebonics" actually made me laugh. Bush's barbarisms, while grimace-worthy is not necessarily a regional problem. Bush's handlers try to prep him for television and instead of focusing on issues, many times the media will throw in red herrings such as Al Gore's lack of spontaneity in his delivery and Perot's distinctive ears. For Pete's sake! What do those trivial matters have to do with pressing issues? Absolutely nothing!
It is very sad that Bush (called Dumbya by the local democrat organizations in this state) is not able to name world leaders; thinks Mexico is South America (and yes, he did say that early in the game) and expressed surprise that imports to America came in from overseas. How in the blue hell did he get to be the apple of the media's eye? He is lobbed some soft ball questions; he does not appear to be able to catch hard ball issues or grasp complex issues and questions. As for "the soft bigotry of low expectations," Dumbya is the poster child for that claim and is also the poster child of who got left behind.
In April of 2007, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada called Dumbya a naked emperor, which seems very spot on. This was in re Dumbya's kvetching about Nancy Pelosi taking time off from her job just as he was about to take some time off from "presidentin'," as his humorous alter-ego who plays him on "Saturday Night Live" says.
Miller hits the bull in the eye when he chafes against the Right's concerted efforts to make Dumbya appear to be an ordinary man for everybody. Comparing him to previous presidents is an insult; Dumbya does not appear to be anywhere near their league of intellectual depth and comprehension of issues. Representative Watts' claim that one need not be smart to be president is a sad fact in today's world; one would think that intelligence would be a job requirement.
Bush, unlike Carter, Clinton, LBJ, Lincoln, Senator John Edwards, Gerald Ford and others did not work his way up from humble beginnings. He had Affirmative Action for the Rich - in this case called "being a legacy." Having a dad who's well connected will certainly open many a door. It has been well documented that Bush was no scholar and was quite a regular attendee at campus parties. As another reviewer on the US boards notes, Dumbya wasted good opportunities at schools like Andover and Yale who most likely would never have accepted him without some string-pulling. He was spoonfed a sense of entitlement to a lavish lifestyle; constant protection and gaining admission to schools who otherwise would not have accepted him. Dumbya's comment about Buckley's having written a book and Dumbya having read one - sad comment given that during his administration, Dumbya said he didn't read and that included the news. How in the blue hell can a president dodge the news? That is a large part of the president's business!
Miller's book is crisp, well written and his trenchant comments will stay with readers long after finishing the last page. This is not just a book for those who don't care for Bush and I admit that I am one - this is a book for everybody. It is a look behind the Presidential Curtain.
Notable.......2006-02-03
To understand and appreciate this work, you must be an American first and a party member second. It is then, and only then, that one can fully understand how George W. Bush, with a golden opportunity to become one of our most revered Presidents, will go down in history as one of the worst, and the second most hated man to live in the last hundred years. Freedom is not the right to do as you please, but the liberty to do as you should. I've read several articles that said this President was his father's puppet. Nothing could be farther from the truth. He's no one's puppet, he's uncontrollable. I've always referred to George W. as Caligula. Actions, good or bad, soon fall prey to habit. As a registered Republican, I offer my condolence and beg to be forgiven for the 2,250 Americans and the countless Arabs who have been needlessly murdered. My party is out of control. We are like a pack of wild dogs that kill not from hunger, but for pleasure.
OK Book-Too many lackluster "Bushisms".......2005-08-08
The beginning and end of this book is pretty good, when he is not explaining Bush's quotes. It gets boring in the middle.
