Matter Mind Spirit: Twelve Contemporary Indiana Women Artists
ASIN: 0871951770 |
Book Description
According to the ethos of the late 1800s and early 1900s, a woman's natural destiny was to be a wife, mother, and guardian of the virtues of hearth and home. Some women wanted more, however, and despite cultural expectations chose to explore their creativity and seek training in art. Often at considerable social cost these women exchanged washboards, ovens, and mending baskets for the challenges of a piece of canvas or block of stone.
In Skirting the Issue, authors Judith Vale Newton and Carol Ann Weiss present dozens of women from Indiana who chose this route. The authors include a biographical dictionary detailing the lives of one hundred of the state's historical women artists, and they single out nearly forty of them for further examination in detailed essays. They describe the challenges the artists faced, the sacrifices they had to make, and the varying degrees of success they met, and they present numerous examples of the artists' work. While this first-of-a-kind book focuses on Indiana women specifically, its stories offer excellent insights into the culture and values of the greater Midwestand the nation at largein the decades before and after the turn of the twentieth century.
Skirting the Issue includes more than two hundred images, including full-color reproductions of artworks and black-and-white photographs of the artists themselves.

Whether you're a collector, fashion historian, costume designer, or dancer, you'll delight in this story of vintage clothing that swings to the beat of a blue note or eight-to-the-bar. Come on a pictorial tour of groovy threads from the 1930s through the 1950s. Dozens of original color photos share top billing with hundreds of vintage ads and sketches. This lively book includes thumbnail bios of the musical artists who made it happen, from Basin Street to Harlem and Southside Chicago, plus a valuation guide, a resource directory, a glossary of music and fashion terms, and even tips on creating your own vintage look.

Very disappointed..........2004-01-18
I was so disappointed with this book. Models with long blue fingernails and modern hairstyles dressed in poorly fitting (and ugly) swing style clothing. The photography looks like a high-school project. I was hoping to find a professional collection of pictures and background on the wonderful fashion of this era and this book is depressing. Don't buy it, don't even look at it at the library. A complete waste of time.
A "must" for costumers and fashion history enthusiasts........2000-03-04
In Swing Style: Fashions Of The 1930s-1950s, Maureen Reilly takes the reader on a lengthy and in-depth survey of vintage clothing styles that ranges from postwar party dresses in chiffon and velveteen, to cocktail costumes in silk, to prom dresses in tulle. Along with the sock-hop standards of circle skirts and capri pants, this history of clothing fashions includes brief biographies of the clothing designers who were responsible for the fashion trends, tips on creating a vintage look today, a valuation guide, a resource directory, and a glossary of music and fashion terms. Swing Style: Fashions Of The 1930s-1950s is a "must" for any personal, academic, or professional costuming and fashion history reference collection.

A++++++++++++++.......2005-12-22
As an adult, I enjoy playing from this book far more than playing from my beginning chord books. Finger picking sounds complex, and I love the way the base notes ring throughout the songs.
You learn a couple of different picks, including variations on the Travis Pick, and the book includes a variety of songs, such as, Ode to Joy; Freight Train; Turn Turn, Turn; and Silent Night, among others.
A lot of fun.

Simple Solos that sound Complex!.......2005-12-22
I started picking songs out of this book just 2 months after my first guitar lessons, so it is a great book for a beginning guitar player (although, I am an adult, for what that's worth). Finger picking is extremely satisfying because it sounds considerably more difficult than chords, but it is actually easier.
The arrangements are wonderful, with the thumb picking out the base notes and the other fingers playing the melody. Each song is shown with chords, notes, and tablature (sp). The book includes many familiar songs, both lively and contemplative, such as Silent Night, What Child is This, and Jingle Bells.
One of my favorites.
Book Description
This chess classic has been praised by players and teachers alike. Lev Alburt, Grandmaster of Chess and three-time US chess champion, presents and analyzes the attack and defense of the king, with hundreds of game illustrations, dozens of problems and exercises, and instructive explanations and solutions. These practical exercises take the reader from beginner to tournament-strength chess player.
Download Description
The King in Jeopardy: The Best Techniques for Attack and Defense is the highly praised best-selling fourth book in Grandmaster Lev Alburt's six-volume Comprehensive Chess Course. The King in Jeopardy's predecessor, Chess Tactics for the Tournament Player, was acclaimed by legendery former Chess Life Editor Larry Parr as "the best thing ever written for achieving quick improvement in tactical play!"
Customer Reviews:
Good chess study aid.......2007-01-12
For someone looking for a good book on tactics, this one is clear and direct. It talks about one thing: attacking and defending the king. The specifics, though, are easily applied to broader chess situations.
Weak.......2005-04-17
This book is better than its predecessor in the series, Chess Tactics for the Tournament Player, which I reviewed previously. However, given the particularly low bar set by Chess Tactics, that still means King in Jeopardy is still a pretty weak book. Some observations:
* The collection of games and positions was HIGHLY unoriginal. In fact, in 247 pages, there were only FIVE games which I had not seen previously.
* The book in general consists of a series of vague generalities. For example, on p99, the authors pose all of the following incredibly interesting questions, "When should the attack involve pawns, and when should it be led without them? Can we determine the proper role of pawns in an attack with kings castled on the same side? Is there a strategic basis for determining correct attacking methods?" Their reply to all of these questions - and I am quoting IN FULL here - "The character of an attack is determined by the nature of the position." They even italicize this sentence for emphasis; apparently they think this is some brilliant insight. Duh! Very helpful, thanks.
* Comments are still ridiculously scarce for many of the games. Concrete variations are even more scarce. Several of the games lack even ONE variation or alternative move.
* Analysis is always superficial, and sometimes incorrect. For example, in Alekhine-Asztalos (p175), we are told "42.Nxf7! 1-0 (42....Qxf7 43.Bd3+ Qg6 44.Qf8!)." Well, that evaluation appears to have been uncritically copied from Alekhine's Best Games book. But in fact, this analysis is incorrect. Chess Life (May 1993) showed that the correct move is 42.Nf3! and 42.Nxf7 merits a ? not a !.
* In some cases essential analysis is missing altogether. One of the most debated moves in chess (17....Rxf2 in Bird-Morphy, p198) is given a !? without comment or analysis.
* Commentary when provided is as vague as the rest of the writing. Page 128 rambles on for three paragraphs about the position after White's 28th move in the game Euwe-Keres. The three paragraphs contain absolutely nothing of value. The three questions to take away from the position are: who stands better? (Black) why? (The square e4 is weak, Black can quickly mass all his pieces for an attack, and the White queen is out of play on c4) what should he do about it? (improve the position of his pieces to go on the attack). The authors attempt to answer only the third question, and don't answer even that one particularly clearly.
Conclusion: You will not learn very much from this book.
A Good Introduction into the World of the Kingside Attack.......2003-02-17
This book is clearly written, and covers many of the fundamental ideas behind successfully launching an attack against an enemy king. The Author has selected many classic games that do a good job of illustrating the basic principles that set an attack up for success instead of failure (how to open up the center to get at un uncastled king, sacrificing plays to open up a castled king with few or poor defenders, etc...).
At just over 200 pages, using reasonably large font, this book is a managable size for someone seeking an introduction to the mysteries of systematically attacking the king. The drawback to this is that, while the games often beautifully illustrate the ideas and principles for conducting an attack, this book really is an introduction. For the best treatment of attacking the king, ART OF ATTACK by Vladimir Vulkovic (everyman chess publishing) it the undisputed source for becoming a master of the kingside attack. As it is much larger, it more thouroughly covers what THE KING IN JEOPARDY does, and touches on many additional, important issues. However, THE KING IN JEOPARDY is a fine book to jump in with and start adding some really exciting battles to your chess game. Last thought: Both these books require a good introductory knowledge of tactics in order to reap their rewards. If you are new to tactics in chess then I would suggest either CHESS TACTICS FOR THE TOURNAMENT PLAYER (same author) or WINNING CHESS TACTICS by Yasser Sierrawan, before launching into this book.
Excellent book.......2002-02-18
I love this whole series. (I ignore the first two books of the series, which are for rank beginners to learn the moves. Start with the Tactics book, then Attacking the King, then Chess Strategy, and Endgame Facts.) A simple four volume course to play chess at the expert (1700) level. Listen, I am not the most talented chess player, and was 1100 on the ICC for months, losing to my friends. I decided to study or to stop playing. I read Silman, Nimzovitch, others and none helped; it was too hard for a dummy like me. This was my last-ditch effort (I figured it worked for school kids in Russia, and I was OK at homework.) It worked. By the time I was through volume 2, I was 1600+. I am in volume 3, so the full impact should go to 1700, as promised in the ads :) A simple effective chess intro. This, and Fred Reinfeld's combo books for practice are all you need to get pretty good at chess, then move on to other skills -- leaving a good chess game in your back pocket for fun now and then :) I only gave this book 4 stars because, of the series, its the most dull, and kind of meanders on the point sometimes. Less like a scheduled lesson, and more like a collage of king-attack examples. I found myself drifting off at times. But its an invaluable part of a GREAT course.

A must read for every believer.......2007-08-12
Most working people spend majority of their time at work. Unfortunately, for some the environment can be hostile.
Like most believers, I work in a hostile work environment, and this book gave me insightful points on how to respond to the environment.
Thank Goodness for a book like this!.......2007-02-27
This book has helped me to focus my attention on me instead of the issues at work which are beyond my control. If you're in a job that seems stressful and you need some encouragement, this book is for you. You can choose to be happy at work or you can choose to be miserable. This book clearly let's you see which choice is in your best interest! You can be peaceful at work regardless to your work circumstance if you choose to. This book was worth reading and sharing with other people that I work with.
Great Book.......2007-01-05
This book was very helpful and practical in dealing with uncomfortable work environments in a Christian manner. It gave specific examples of ways to deal with difficult situations, using scriptural principles based on the life of King David.
It's a great book.......2006-03-20
I had a friend who was going thru some very difficult times at work with a few co-workers. I saw the book and purchased it for myself but once I read it I knew that my friend could benefit from reading it so I gave it to her because her situation was more complex than mine. She thanked me for the book because she knew that it would help her to better understand how to survive in a hostile work environment.

What makes a company great? After all, management trends come and go. Economic conditions fluctuate and market demands shift. Corporations re-structure and new owners take over. The one constant, the one enduring truth, is that people define the character of a company. They always have and always will. Motivated, passionate people make the difference between ho-hum mediocrity and extraordinary performance. That’s the message from Peter W. Schutz, former CEO of Porsche AG and author of this new book. Schutz explains that people are the heart and soul of any business. In The Driving Force, he shares a wealth of insights he learned throughout his career that relate to the successful management of people.
Customer Reviews:
A good primer for working effectively with people.......2007-03-08
I feel that Peter Schutz has some unique insights to offer on working effectively with people. The book has a narrative style that I found pleasant to read and the style worked nicely with the points that Peter made. I felt the book was more that worth the small investment in time and money to purchase and read. He has had several interesting positions through out his career including his time at Porsche. He's also had some great mentors and coworkers that helped him through some of the tougher times. I could relate to his early engineering background. I did find myself wondering at times when he was going to cut to the chase, but felt he effectively used the intro stories to help bring home his points. I found his business experiences with the very powerful unions in Germany at Porsche to be very interesting. I've already tried his method of how decisions must be made and how they have to be implemented to be effective and he's right. I've also paid attention to his different methods of management, authority and control noted in the book and it definitely makes a difference in the way people respond. I didn't realize till purchasing the book that he now works as a consultant and speaker to help with management/work issues.
Driving Force is right on target!.......2007-01-11
Driving Force is an amazing book by Peter Schulz. Everyone aspiring to be a manager or is a manager should read this book.I read this book in three sittings. Peter is down to earth and wants to share his experiences to the world. He is a proven business leader and his writings come across with boldneess and clarity.
A Different Drummer.......2006-04-11
I found The Driving Force to be both delightfully engaging as biography and sanely instructive in its discussion of matters relating to business. Mr. Schutz writes in a direct and self-effacing manner, with both wit and conviction; his stories often having the character of parables in that the "lessons" they contain would seem not only applicable to business but to other areas of human interaction and decision making as well. His are not views commonly held, or practiced, by most of today's MBA trained business leaders but, given their many failures and Mr. Schutz's documented successes, perhaps should be. For those interested in management skills, a fascinating history of Porsche's return, and triumph, both in racing and business, or just a good story well told by a man whose own life seems itself to have been a most "extraordinary" journey, I would recommend this book most highly.
Peter Schutz is very very good!.......2003-05-22
I read this book in two sittings. He did not write this book out of a desire for fortune or fame. He has plenty of both. He wrote this book out of a desire to humbly share some of the things he has learned, and is on point. His focus on accountability, values, and the workers and customers is very similar to some of our other current business heros, such as Herb Kelleher and Michael Dell. This is a must read for any manager, executive, or leader. Or anyone who aspires to something better.
I have read probably 100 books on management/leadership, and this is in the top five.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Book on the Confederate Cruisers.......2007-07-15
I found Gray Raiders of the Sea extremely enjoyable, reading more like a novel than a history tome, and very well organized and paced. Following the careers of commerce raiders like the CSS Alabama and the CSS Florida, as well as other, less famed vessels, separately makes eminent sense, since several Confederate raiders operated at the same time and to trace their depredations simultaneously would have made the book far less readable. Also, given the length of these ships' voyages and the sheer number of prizes captured, Mr. Hearn has done an outstanding job of supplying both necessary and interesting detail, without overburdening the reader with an endless account of facts. An excellent work, recommended for the ordinary reader and student of history alike.
SOUND RESEARCH & NICE JOB.......2005-12-19
Although this book has been criticized for a disorganized presentation, the nature of the subject almost demands that the story of each of the Confederate raiders be told separately. For anyone interested in the naval side of the Civil War, this work is both an excellent reference and a good read. The detailed accounts of the engagements of the eight cruisers, Sumter, Nashville, Florida, Tallahassee, Chickamauga, Alabama, and Shenandoah, are based on a good variety of sources, primarily the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion, but also including a range of memoirs, journals, contemporary periodicals, and solid secondary sources. A concise summary of the Alabama claims case, settled between Britain and the United States in 1872, rounds out the story. Hearn makes a good argument that the eight raiders succeeded in driving ships from U.S. registry and U.S. ownership, and in this regard, the book makes an interesting and important contribution that goes beyond the naval side of the Civil War.
Not for the casual reader.......2005-09-13
"Gray Raiders of the Sea" is a well-researched, informative, interesting, but disorganized account about the Confederate navy's successful commerce-raiding campaign against the North during the Civil War. This book is valuable because it tells a little-known story, but much of its value is lost because it fails to tell that story well.
This book is recommended for any reader with a serious interest in the Civil War or in naval history. It is not recommended for casual readers. Its writing style is dry and matter-of-fact, and the book is poorly organized. Although the eight Confederate raiders that the book focuses on often operated at the same time (and even in the same waters), because the book focuses on each sequentially, the reader learns of each ship independently. It is hard for the reader to see each ship as part of a larger strategy. Furthermore, the author could have done a better job explaining the admiralty law that governed these actions. Although this law was important to the combatants and neutrals, at no point does he adequately explain the entire framework. Instead, he explains small bits and pieces as needed.
Much of the narrative is dry and matter-of-fact. Encounters between the Confederate captains and the merchant captains or owners are often described in one or two sentences, without any explanation as to why one ship was released, another was bonded, and another would be sunk. Although this leaves the reader frustrated at the lack of details, this is probably a result of the limited sources available to the author. The accounts in the book are often based only on one source: the captain's journal. It is a shame that no other accounts of these encounters exist.
Despite these weaknesses, this book is still valuable for many reasons. It is well-researched. Hearn does a good job supporting his thesis: that the eight Confederate raiders almost drove Union merchant shipping from the seas, and that the United States' merchant shipping never recovered. And this book covers a subject that ahs been ignored by other historians.
This book has its strong points, but it also has glaring negatives. This book could serve as a good secondary resource about the Confederate merchant raiding campaign. Beyond that, "Gray Raiders of the Sea" would only be of interest to the hardcore Civil War or naval historian.
Broad coverage, seems accurate, but poorly organized........1998-08-24
This book superficially covers the operations of the commerce destroyers of the Confederate State Navy during the American Civil War. For an historical work, this book is poorly organized. It bounces all over the place when it should have maintained chronological order. Moreover, the events discussed appear to have occurred in limbo. There is very little attempt to place them in context with other events of the period. Coverage seems accurate, but I would have liked to have seen a bit more depth. Sources are first rate and the the work is well documented.
Book Description
Religion and politics have always been a potent mix. History is littered with times when that combination caused sweeping death and destruction, when it fueled aggression and oppressionÂand when it gave fascism a religious and diplomatic face.
Reverend Davidson Loehr is afraid that we may be living in such a time in America today. On the Sunday following the election on November 2, 2004, Loehr, a liberal minister in Texas, delivered a sermon titled ÂLiving Under FascismÂÂa sermon that spread like wildfire through the Internet. ÂI mean to persuade you that the style of governing into which America has slid is most accurately described as fascism, and that the necessary implications of this fact are rightly regarded as terrifying, the preacher told his congregation. Â. . . and even if I donÂ't persuade you, I hope to raise the level of your thinking about who and where we are now.Â
In this series of incisive and inspired sermons, Loehr takes aim at the unholy alliance of corporate money, political power, and religious fundamentalism that is threatening both our political and our economic democracy. But LoehrÂ's words provide little comfort to liberals and progressives who have stubbornly clung to a radical individualism and an amoral secularism.
America, Fascism, and God is a callÂfirst to understand that religion has been hijacked and debased. And then to take it back.
Customer Reviews:
Short and Simple Truths.......2007-01-05
I first heard Davidson speak when he was the interim minister at Unity-Unitarian church in St Paul. My wife and I were looking for (and found) a great community there, due in no small part to Mr Loehr's sermons. It was there that I heard his sermon "The Dark God Of Capitalism," an updated version of which is included in the book.
If you have ever felt that something was "wrong" in America but couldn't quite put your finger on "it," or put "it" into words, then you want to read "America, Fascism, And God." Don't let words like "god" and "religion" scare you off. You don't have to be worried that Davidson might be trying to "convert" you (although you might want him to be president after reading his book, I'd settle on him becoming more widely known and read). This is a book that reinforces your reactive intuition and encourages independent thought.
"America, Fascism, And God" should be in the back pocket of ever member of the House and Senate as well as everyone of voting age in the U$A, especially all those who don't vote. I bought and distributed six copies to friends (thanks to amazon).
Profound-- and Profoundly Depressing.......2006-04-01
This is among the best, and also among the most distressing and depressing books I have ever read on what's wrong with America today. Probably because the author is a minister, he somehow manages to maintain some degree of optimism in the face of his own devastating analyses, but I find his pale faith to be cold comfort in the face of what he describes: a country that has ALREADY been taken over by Christo-fascists intent on ramming their religion and morality down everyone else's throats.
Unless you're a dedicated Unitarian-Universalist, you could easily skip Part I, entitled "God," and go directly to the sections on Fascism and America, where there are so many wonderful insights, expressed in such direct, easily-grasped, and striking language, that I felt like underlining just about every sentence!
Just as chilling as Loehr's insights about the goals of fundamentalist religion are his observations about corporate America's "long and patient campaign to gain control of government," and its recent, near-total success. He notes that this take-over goes far beyond any attempt to widen the gap between the upper and lower classes: it's a campaign to "separate the top 1 percent from all below them."
Although Loehr occasionally touches on the issue of the role played by sexual attitudes in fueling the culture wars, he doesn't pursue that insight sufficiently. He notes the hatred of men like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson toward "liberated women, abortion, and homosexuality," without taking note that this attitude-- this seething envy and hatred of anyone suspected of having sex for any reason other than the joyless "duty" of procreation-- underlies the whole fundamentalist agenda. Their opposition to abortion isn't about saving poor little helpless fetuses; it's about punishing women for having sex for any reason other than having children. If they were REALLY "pro-life," they wouldn't be such avid supporters of slaughtering everyone who gets in the way of America's imperialistic ambitions.
Despite my minor reservations, I consider this a brilliant book that should reach a much larger audience than--alas-- it will. As with all such books, it's a case of preaching to the choir. Those who read it will be those who already agree with Loehr, and those who most need to read it will ignore it.
Much Needed - A Reality Check.......2006-02-25
Loehr provides clarity in a time when confusion and dupilicty seem to be the weapons of choice by those that are presently waging war on our
cultural, religious and politcal system.
Profound but Simple Analysis of Politics and Religion........2006-01-30
With the minimum of words, Rev. Loehr has managed to describe such topics as fascism in America in a way that gives urgency for decent people to stand and be counted. The barbarians within our own culture are making their move.
Can I get a Hallelujah?.......2006-01-03
I received this as a Christmas present and will admit that I have not yet completed the entire book.
This is an amazing book with very clear, concise, and compelling messages (say that 10 times fast). It has made me think twice about the way I live my life even though I consider myself to be a liberal.
The other wonderful part is that he provides the other books/authors that informed various sermons so that you can read in more detail the topics he discusses.
Not a book for the faint of heart because he really challenges your views so come prepared.
