3 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

The end of the Tomb of Dracula series is contained in this volume. There are other things like Dracula magazines and other bits and pieces put in to fill it out.

Note that it has been discovered that the excellent original artwork has been altered and censored in some cases. That sort of prudishness in very disappointing in something that was always aimed at adults.

        5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good........2006-10-02

This volume could be suspected of being solely for completists, since it reprints little-known short stories from Marvel's many horror mags. In fact, before reading it, I feared it might feel like a lot of inventory material. I was quite happy to be proven wrong.

Editorial care was taken to present these stories in chronological order, giving them a biographical flavor (we follow Dracula from the late XVth century to the present). The artwork is unequal, but we're treated to some good work by Neal Adams, John Buscema and Alan Lee Weis, by many Filipino artists whose art never looks so good as in black and white, by a young Paul Gulacy and by Dracula's best illustrator ever, Gene Colan.

This final Essential Dracula tome can not compete with the previous three, since they presented the brilliant run of the main Dracula title by Wolfman and Colan; however, it certainly makes a welcome companion. And as ever, at the price, it's a bargain.

4 out of 5 stars Reprinting all of Marvel's black & white "Dracula" stories.......2005-05-10

I was surprised there was a Volume 4 of the "Essential Tomb of Dracula" because once they got to the end of the run of the Marvel comic book mostly written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by Gene Colan, I figured that was it. But there were some black & white magazines being put out at the same time and it is largely the Dracula stories from those titles that are collected here. However, there is also the original pencil art for the pages that Wolfman and Colan had to excise from "Tomb of Dracula" #70 when the finale was finally decided to be a double-issue. Half the pages have dialogue and there is an issue break, so you can have some fun figuring where these pages would have gone. But at least fans of the comic book get a little something new here even if they are familiar with all of the reprints.

What we have in Volume are stories from issues #2-6 of "Tomb of Dracula" magazine, "Dracula Lives" #1-13, and "Frankenstein Monster" #7-9. However, the neat thing about this collection is that the stories are, for the most part, arranged "chronologically" according to the "life" of Dracula. After an article on "Bloodline: A Probable Outline of the Career of Count Vlad Dracula" compiled by Peter Gillis we go back to 1452 with the Marvel origin of the character in "That Dracula May Live Again" by Marv Wolfman and Neal Adams. There are six stories from the 15th century, another dozen before Stoker's "Dracula" in 1890, a three-part encounter with the Frankenstein Monster in 1898 (already reprinted in the "Essential Monster of Frankenstein"), and then 20th century stories from 1903, 1926, and 1944 (the Nazis meet Dracula) before we get to "Today" and the final eleven stories.

This is an uneven collection of stories, which is to be expected with other Marvel writers and artists getting into the act in telling Dracula stories. The best of the bunch are "Sanctuary" by Roger McKenzie and Colon, the Adams drawn story mentioned above, "Suffer Not a Witch" by Roy Thomas with art by Alan Weiss and Dick Giordano, the Civil War tale "A House Divided" by James Shooter and Colan (okay, any time Colan draws a Dracula story it just looks so much better than, say, Frank Robbins), the short "Bounty for a Vampire" by Tony Isabell and Tony DeZeuniga," and "A Night in the Unlife" by Gerry Conway and Alfredo Alcala." But "This Blood Is Mine," a story that has Dracula meeting up with the Countess Elizabeth Bathory, is particularly disappointing as do most of the attempts to introduce the Count into a particular time and place (e.g., the Fascist Rome of 1926 passing for gangland Chicago).

This has to be the last volume in the collection and it certainly qualifies as complete from my perspective. I appreciate having "The Tomb of Dracula" completed, but if they would just get further along with the "Essential Fantastic Four," "Essential Thor," and "Essential Daredevil" I could be even happier.

        3 out of 5 stars I was a little disappointed.......2005-09-25

I like what she has to say about misanthropy, but I was expecting more shots at different types of people in general. Being a misanthrope, I can find many better reasons to not like people than some she has in this book. I was expecting a book that made fun of different stereotypes and discussed the variety of reasons to not like people in general.
This promoted more stereotypes than it did dissecting them, though. The book was more of a political statement on what the author considers the "feminization of America." I can think of many things wrong in America, but fewer misogynists isn't one of them.

4 out of 5 stars You don't have to hate people to love Florence King.......2002-09-08

I resubmit my review, to link with my current list.

The "failed Southern lady" sets off into history, searching out other members of her own kind. This results in some intriguing character sketches of people like Ambrose Bierce, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Dian Fossey, and other famous people-haters. She verges on preciousness in places, as in the interweaving of Nixon's career with a poem by a French courtier. But the book is full of her acidic well-readness, and is endlessly quotable. The introduction is a great exposition--maybe the only one in popular literature--one what makes and what does not make a misanthrope. Enjoy your bitters!

5 out of 5 stars No "hugees" here!.......2001-07-04

This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. If you have had too much PC or have had it up to here with cloying sentimentality, or you just had too much "other people", get this book. If you like Dorothy Parker, H.L. Mencken, Ambrose Bierce, Grouch Marx, etc., you will love this book. Miss King spares no one and pulls no punches.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Joyous Life-Affirming Comedy.......2000-06-13

How can a book about misanthropy be joyful and life-affirming? Because Florence lets you know you're not alone. It can be pretty discouraging when everyone you know wants you to smile and be optimistic at all costs. Florence's devastations of the incompetent are the very definition of "catharsis." Mencken, whereever he is, must be green with envy.

4 out of 5 stars Brevity is the soul of wrath.......1999-11-22

I disagree with the NY Times--this book's covers are not too close together. It is of perfect length for a nice antisocial weekend. Kudos to King for introducing the reader to less obvious misanthropes. I learned that Diane Fossey was a savage, Ayn Rand was an obsessive-compulsive Fuhrer-in-waiting, and Ty Cobb was just a bully. People often confuse misanthropy with psychosis. King is sharp enough to make the distinction. I would bump into her and exchange vulgar insults anytime.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the effort.......2007-09-05

This book doesn't provide much in strategy that you can't find on the net or elsewhere. I was looking for some well formated strategy charts for non-full pay games, and this book was not good for that need.

One positive section was the discussion of VLTs in many racinos and bars in several states (e.g. bars in Louisiana). VLTs are not VP machines based on random number generators.

The strategy cards are terrible and I think my copy was missing a page (there was a tear showing a previous perforation). If you play VP in large casinos on the strip, you won't be playing full pay games.

                  4 out of 5 stars Nicely done!.......2007-09-05

An excellent treatment on Video Poker. Gives, as all these guides do, a quick overview of what is involved in playing Video Poker. Then she delves into the deeper aspects of choice of game which is based on the printed paytable and its implied "expected return" and volatility level. You see some games while having very attractive payoffs for those very rare hands, require a substantially higher bankroll to play with a reasonable expectation of achieving the theoretical long-term payoff while others with lower payoffs (but more frequent) require less bankroll. Lots of tables are included containing all the really essential stuff sought after by the serious Video Poker player. Now if you are NOT a serious player, this book can still be a valuable investment because there are removable strategy cards at the end of the book covering all the most common machines. Those alone were worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied with the information contained in the book........2007-08-26

I can say for sure, that this is a must read book for video poker. Although it appears that the modern casinos do not have the 9/6 tables in their establishments any more, (8/5, best I could find around the east coast) the information in this book has enabled me to break even after three times visiting my local casino. One of those times I hit a straight flush, but kept playing. Had I left, I would have been up a hundred. Also, online I put a hundred dollars into a site and made over four hundred, so I guess I can say the book paid for itself, plus. I also bought a computer program to practice on, which she recommended. That too, has paid for itself. There is a definete strategy to video poker, and you must study, no matter who your so called friends are that are supposable experts, LOL yes yes, I have one of them. :) Anyhow, he can not understand why I keep beating him. A very good book, and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Video Poker 101.......2007-05-19

If you are new to VP (video poker) this is a great book to start with. Boyd keeps it real simple for the beginner and covers a lot of ground in 150 pages. If you've already read a few other video poker books like Dancer's or Paymar's you won't really find anything new in here. Although I did like her coverage of VLT's (Video Lottery Terminals).

The little bit of math that is covered in the book, has simple and easy to follow examples that a sixth grader could understand. And there are lots of clear and concise tables to help you understand the concepts on how to play smart VP, from learning the optimum strategies, to identifying good VP machines.

There's good coverage of the most common types of VP machines you will find in casinos. There is also a good explanation of ER (Expected Return), EV (Expected Value) and variance. Although ROR (Risk of Ruin) was mentioned, she didn't go into any depth on the subject, which surprises me because she covered everything else so well.

The tear-out strategy cards in the back of the book are a nice bonus, because you can buy them separately from online dealers for about $5-$8 each. Book Description

More than ten years after his first bestselling book, The E–Myth, changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of small business owners, Michael Gerber椮trepreneur, author, and speaker extraordinaire楩res the next salvo in his highly successful E–Myth Revolution. Drawing on lessons learned from working with more than 15,000 small, medium–sized, and very large organisations, Gerber has discovered the truth behind why management doesn't work栮d what to do about it. Unearthing the arbitrary origins of commonly held doctrines such as the omniscience of leader (Emperor) and the most widely embraced myth of all擨e E–Myth Manager offers a fresh, provocative alternative to management as we know it. It explores why every manager must take charge of his own life, reconcile his own personal vision with that of the organisation, and develop an entrepreneurial mind–set to achieve true success.

Great stuff and a must have - appears to be simplistic but after you really study Gerber's well articulated strategy carefully - it will then reveal its true value.

Michael Gerber does not put much credence in the oodles of management and leadership theory and teachings that fill today's bookstores, seminars, and classrooms - to include those principles embraced by the titans in the field. One of the main ideas put forth in his book is that a manager must be able to treat his organization/department as if it were his own company. While not a new idea, Michael does take it a bit further insisting that it is an absolute requirement that each person's role in the organization must fill his own personal vision. When this is the case, the manager can find true fulfillment in his work and achieve wonderful things in the process. If not, all the theory, training, etc are pure folly. There's lots of good stuff in this one. It's an easy read too. Michael unveils the e-myth philosophy and how it can be implemented by walking through the process with a manager of his own company.

It was 10+ years since reading the original. Now mid-career I was like the young exec who is the mythical "atlas shrugged".

Gerber's book let me know that vision was still important and that you can't sacrifice your own vision without the resulting burnout.

At a few junctures it gets a little mystic and so I just flip the page.

But as an engineer it's been a boon to my work morale and I've been cranking out the patents and ideas as fast as I can. My vision is to pursue my talents with a tad more caution and ownership.

If you are looking for the original emyth book that is LOADED with earth shattering ideas about how small business owners should look at their business - this is NOT it.

A very dissappointing philosophical book that meanders around with little inspiring points.

The emyth original is at the top of the must read books for business owners and this one might be near the bottom. Not to say that there are not some bright spots, but they are few.

                  Book Description

Open Doors is a tribute to Vietnam prisoners of war and their individual determination in seeking personal and professional happiness upon their release. A testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of human will, it is also a celebration of freedom.

While their experience in captivity has been well documented, historians have largely overlooked the current lives of former Vietnam POWs. Combining photo portraits and insightful profiles of thirty Vietnam-era POWs, Taylor Baldwin Kiland and Jamie Howren offer an intimate look at these men—the longest-held group of returned POWs in our nation”s history—as husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, and grandfathers. Subjects include the famous (Sen. John McCain and former vice presidential candidate Vice Adm. James Stockdale) and the not-so-famous. None received celebrity treatment on their liberation; all resumed their lives as private citizens. Most of them have flourished in the face of great challenges, proud of their accomplishments.

The book is based on a traveling photographic exhibit that has been touring the United States since October 2003. Rather than dwelling on the torture and suffering of their years in the notorious prison complex known to its inhabitants as the “Hanoi Hilton,” the authors focused on commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of the POWs’ return to the United States and on celebrating the years of freedom and personal achievement that followed.

The book was quick to read and the type was easy to read. There were numerous photographs and reasonably good writing. The POW issue is one everyone should be aware of, especially since there were so many men left behind and so many returned POWs who are living witnesses to that fact. Most of these men who survived and returned home have gone on to live active and productive lives.

5 out of 5 stars The Best and the Brightest After the Hanoi Hilton.......2006-04-29

Perhaps the most striking part of this book to me is the simple number, the number of days that these men spent in captivity in Vietnam: 2,381; 2,432; 2,676; 3,113. To me this made a stronger impact than saying 5 years or whatever. Three thousand days. These people sat there with nothing to do, scared, being mistreated, tortured, no idea if they would ever return home.

But return home 661 did. And the overwhelming percentage brought home with them a dedication to life. Most seem to have stayed in the service (some of them had been promoted twice while in captivity), most after the service went on to successful careers in a wide variety of fields. Coming to mind is the title of David Halberstam's book, 'The Best and the Brightest.' It would be difficult to find a better group of men than these.

This is the story of what happened afterward to thirty of these men.

5 out of 5 stars Truth and Tribute for Viet Nam POWs.......2006-04-06

This is a captivating little book that reveals how 30 Prisoners Of War (POWs) from Viet Nam have coped with life after their horrible privation and suffering while imprisoned in North Viet Nam. A number of well known POWs, like Senator John McCain and Medal of Honor winner Bud Day, are included. Authors Howren and Kiland have skillfully probed the inner man within each of these heroes, revealing to the reader the unique traits these men possessed that helped them survive their ordeals. These traits more often than not have stayed within their personas and have helped to mold them in their post-POW lives. Very professional black and white photographs show these men, often with family members, in contemporary settings and the photos reveal their essential humanity better than the written word ever could. While their POW experiences were horrific, these men come across thirty years later as not only quite normal, they seem to possess very unique insights into the persons they have become. Each POW's story is presented in two parts; the first is their thirty years later story, followed by a separate section with photos from before or just after their captivity ended and more comprehensive career histories. This arrangement gives a "before and after" which clearly shows the contrasts in their lives over time. The last portion of the book includes some excellent analysis of the demographics of POWs and insightful discussion of some myths and facts that help put them in proper context. This is a unique and professionally done book, easy to read and sure to hold the interest of anyone who wondered what became of the POWs of Viet Nam.

The ultra left media and Hollywood has blasphemed us unjustly for years. Thanks to Mel Gibson for making "We Were Soldiers" also.

5 out of 5 stars Talk about inspirational!.......2006-02-22

I just can't get enough of this book. It's simply amazing to ponder that these men have been imprisoned and tortured, some for as long as eight years. Then you see their recent pictures and they're almost all smiling. Some in their offices, many outdoors, some with their wives, some with grandkids and dogs. But smiling genuine smiles.

It's a tribute to the human spirit that these men not only endured their captivity but actually thrived in life after the war. Some went on to become renowned government officials, others in Academia, and others in the private sector, but all were able to find balance and joy beyond the horrors of their experience.

The book accomplishes more that one could reasonably expect and the authors did a great job. In one black and white photo and a couple of pages of text, the reader gets a real feel for the POW and what makes him tick. I'm glad that the book's focus is on the positive achievements these men have accomplished since the war, and only addresses their incarceration in how it strengthened their core values or how that experience helped them later in life.

This book can be seen as a catharsis for what ails us today as a society: It puts what is important in life into perspective, and makes the reader truly thankful for and appreciative of his or her blessings. It should be required reading for high school students.

                  Book Description

Great Captains Unveiled incisively examines the brilliant military careers and intriguing personalities of six masters of the battlefield: Jenghiz Khan (1167?-1227) and Sabutai (1172?-1245), who led their Mongol cavalry into the heart of medieval Europe and shook the fabric of its civilization; the French Marechal de Saxe (1696-1750), one of the greatest generals of his age, a military prophet of rare foresight, and author of Reveries, a classic on the art of war; Gustavus Adolphus (1594-1632), the Swedish king during the Thirty Years War and the founder of the modern army, who emphasized officer education, national recruitment, and the combination of firepower and mobility; Wallenstein (1583-1634), champion of the Holy Roman Empire and Adolphus's formidable opponent, who proved to be a genius of maneuver and psychological warfare; and James Wolfe (1727-1759), whose flawless execution of one of the most daring amphibious operations in history virtually gave Canada to the British. Liddell Hart's penetrating, decisive studies of these great captains reveal not only their genius and impact, but offer relevant lessons that 20th-century military commanders have yet to fully reap.

Wafare philosophy enthusiasts will love Liddell Hart's works. This classic work containing the seeds of blitzkrieg and maneuver warfare theory will resonate especially with those who admire those schools of thought. The first chapter on Jenghiz Khan and Sabutai is alone worth the price of the book. A brilliant piece of military history and theory that still resonates with thinkers today.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview.......2005-06-23

Hart's "Great Captains Unveiled" is a great read: it is relatively short, not overly long on detail and interesting. The book does not fall into the trap of appeasing armchair generals, meaning that it skips fame in favor of true strategy and leadership. One might expect such a book to focus on Caesar, Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Marlborough, Washington or Patton. However, Hart instead examines less appreciated leaders, including Genghis Kahn, Marshal de Saxe, Gustavus Adolphus, Wallenstein, and Wolfe. I personally most enjoyed the chapter on Genghis Khan. Hart ignores the crude characterizations of and misinformation on Khan. For example, there was no "Mongol horde" that simply outnumbered its enemies, nor did the Christian west valiantly repel Khan's armies. Rather, Khan was typically outnumbered and he won due to innovative tactics and excellent operational control. Moreover, his armies retreated from Europe due to internal political issues. Khan was an innovator and a winner, something Hart focuses on. The other biographies are also compelling. Overall, this is a quick enjoyable read for those truly interested in great military leaders.

                  2 out of 5 stars A great disappointment from a military genius.......2003-10-05

Liddell Hart ranks as a minor military prophet in his own right. Although he was considered one of Britain's leading tank experts during and after the Great War, the British military rejected his thought on the importance of mobility, but the German General Staff followed his work closely. The result was the Blitzkrieg, which destroyed the armies of Poland, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Britain in less than a year.

Here, however, in a collection of biographical essays written for popular journal readers, Liddell Hart shows himself as not being above gushing hack writing more typical of a teenager's fan magazine than a military history. As another reviewer has pointed out, "Great Captains Unveiled" jumps about in its biographies. It offers facts which might be interesting in the context of a major biographical work, but which are all but pointless in the brief biographies presented -- acceptable perhaps for a general readership, but unacceptable for those expecting information which explains WHY these particular individuals were chosen to be considered "Great Captains."

The worst biography is probably that of Wolfe, victor at Quebec. What difference does it make if he was delayed on this date or that date because he or someone else was sick? The Battle of Quebec and his tactics were completely unaffected by his health (unlike, for example, General Rommel's psychosomatic illnesses, which seriously affected the course of the North African campaign and led to his disillusionment with Hitler and his own forced suicide, a series of events which unfolded after the publishing of this book, which Rommel might well have read, although he himself throve too late to be included). The gushing tone is most obvious in the actual description of the "Battle" of Quebec, which seems to have boiled down to a sneak attack, one effective volley at close range which caused the French to panic, and a foolish French salley which cost both Wolfe and defender Montcalme their lives. A perceptive reader might well get the impression that death was Wolfe's greatest ally: had he lived he might well have shown himself to be as mediocre as most of his contemporaries -- one lucky volley does not a "Great Captain" make.

The acccount of the Mongol conquest of the Khwarezm Shah's empire, however, is very good indeed. Although the casus belli is often repeated in histories of the Mongol conquests, few histories relate the unfolding of the events which led to the Mongol victory, nor so succinctly explain EXACTLY why this victory was more significant than any other Mongol victory in Central Asia. The other Mongol victories get short shrift, but this book's account of the Central Asian campaign is outstanding.

The life of Wallenstein is covered in far greater detail in Friedrich Shiller's history of the Thirty Years War (available free online through Project Gutenberg and other web sites) than it is in "Great Captains Unveiled," while the life of De Saxe is over-rated and inflated to highlight the importance of his "Reveries." I can't even remember who else was covered in this book, so trivialized are the biographies.

This is one book by Liddell Hart which bears missing. The interested reader should merely note the names of those whose biographies he includes and look up their lives elsewhere, although, as stated, the account of the defeat of the Khwarezm Shah is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Get in to the minds of genius'!.......2002-12-15

This book is amazing. I really like this book. Because it explains not only strategical and tactical thoughts but also gives lessons about them. For example, Sabutay always leaded his armies in a security circle. He always believed the importance of the security. If you really investigate the maps in the books and listens to Sir Hart, you can understand that easily. Above all, you can apply these thoughts to your military, business or personal life. Without a doubt, Hart doesn't generalise that. Because he was a fascinating military theorist not a self-help or a business-self book writer. However, If you deeply thinks the book(when you are reading that), you can gain many skills and get in to the minds of genius'.

                                Book Description

Privatization is one of the most important political and economic developments of our time, affecting virtually every person and state in the world. The purpose of "The Fox in the Henhouse is to present, in clear, direct terms, an analysis of privatization that helps readers understand what is happening to them and what they can do about it. It gives people on all sides of many different privatization struggles -- over hospitals, schools, sanitation, water, Social Security, the military, public lands, the postal service, national parks, prisons -- the arguments that have been used to place privatization at the center of the corporate agenda and to dominate the public debate. It also offers a historical framework that allows readers to center their thinking on what it means to build a democratic society, while providing the counterarguments -- and inspiration -- that people need both to argue and to fight back.

3 out of 5 stars Too much philosophy, not enough facts.......2007-07-05

Every time period, every era is marked by historical trends that occur too slow to perceive by most, but which result in momentous transformations in the makeup of society. I dare say that privatization is the biggest trend of the post Cold War era. Whether it is public utilities, telecommunications, police, correctional facilities, or even space exploration, the forces of privatization have slowly and gradually taken over countries on every continent. Privatization is also one of the least discussed issues in both politics, political science, and economics.

This book addresses how privatization affects democracy and democratic governments. The authors, veterans of numerous civil rights struggles, have written a short book laying out the case against privatization of many sectors of society, some of which were listed earlier in this review. The text is quite short for such a massive subject, and only privatization of three sectors of the economy are examined in detail; prisons, schools, and the US military. Brief mention is made of privatization of airport security, airport traffic control, water, and land. The book ignores privatization of scientific/medical research, financial regulations, power utilities, roads/transit systems, and a whole host of other sectors of the economy.

The style of the text is about one third fact, one third polemic, and one third philosophical reasoning. I was expecting this book to be a cross between a history book and investigative journalism. Unfortunately. it seemed to be a mixture of political propaganda and editorial journalism. As such, the authors offer too little factual analysis and too much commentary; basically a liberal counterpoint to Rush Limbaugh. This is unfortunate as both the title of the text and the subject matter is quite important. If a second edition is released, the authors should include more data to back their arguments; data in the form of tables, charts, and graphs. The authors should also leave out the various poems and folk songs interspersed on every other page. The authors should also examine more sectors of the economy and how each has been privatized to some extent.

In summary, a book with great promise, great ideas, but mediocre execution and delivery. Not enough substance or heart.

5 out of 5 stars Government can be a good thing; private greed can be a bad thing.......2006-06-08

The book is a good read that changed my philosophy from a "libertarian" approach to a more Adam Smith-like approach in which the government regulates the marketplace to create a level playing field. Even Adam Smith saw there were limits to what a free market can do. We should not have a economic race to the bottom. Mindless pursuit of privitization can be more expensive socially, politically, and economically than relying on the government.

The book reminds us that the proper role of government in the words of Abraham Lincoln is help people do what they cannot do for themselves. If that means public schools and social security, it is a reasonable price to pay for people to live like civilized human beings. Government services and regulations prevent private enterprise from overstepping its bounds into dominating our lives. For example, the book points out we all lose when Clearwater Communications dominates all the radio and television stations in a given community so there are no other voices.

There is a role for government and there is a role for private enterprise. We should not allow blind worship of the marketplace to enable a few people on top become even richer by gutting social services and government regulations so they can save on taxes and the rest us can suffer the consequences. To privatize government is to put into the hands of a few people who are already well-off and can look after themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Hear the foxes howl.......2006-05-29

At the outset, I must concede that I have a bit of a bias when it comes to the subject matter of this book. As a civil servant I've had to put up with the incessant drone of the Bush administration's propaganda machine as it extols the merits of A-76 studies. Every time I turn around I receive an e-mail @ work that tries to convince us how fair, just and blessed his privatization agenda is.

The problem is, I've seen myriad A-76 disasters; bait & switch tactics by contractors, egregious amounts of money being spent on useless studies, government workers being shafted no matter what happens, companies going bankrupt after receiving the contract and (most likely to happen) the contractor falling well short of what it promised in the original agreement. I do NOT need some bureaucrat in Washington telling me I didn't really see what I already saw!!

All the while, I kept thinking that surely someone out there must see the same waste / fraud / abuse in government contracting that I did. Thankfully, for once in my life, I was correct. Enter Minnich and Kahn. This book details many of the problems I already knew existed, but goes further in-depth than I have been able.

Some may be offended that the book portrays Republicans and corporate executives as voracious wolves who would eat their own young to turn a buck. The most surprising thing about this assessment is that it's accurate. Whether it's politically correct to call something what it already is, is entirely irrelevant.

George W. Bush is likely the most privatization-friendly president in history. He has nothing but contempt for government workers, and the sooner we're all out-sourced, the better. The company line is that outsourcing is a fabulous deal for everyone, and people who work for the private sector are intrinsically more intelligent and operate with greater efficiency than those who work for the government. In the end, if the government is privatized, it helps the "free market" economy and the government "releases itself" from being a burden to progress. The sixty-thousand-dollar question, of course, is this: can this be categorically said to be true?

If you answered "no," you are correct. If you're not convinced that no is the right answer, read the horror stories from this book & they will promptly change your mind. For all those who would claim that this book is nothing but a whimsical book written by bed-wetting liberals, I say this: for ONCE in your life exercise your aptitude for critical thinking and USE it when you read what Minnich & Kahn have to say!!

For those who are skeptical of privatizing the government, this book will reinforce your reasons for being skeptical. Some who are naive enough to believe that Dubya actually has the well-being of this countries' citizens in mind when he makes his decisions will be stunned by the revelations contained herein. However, to grow as a country sometimes demands painful steps be made. Stopping the arbitrary onslaught of privatization is one of them. Read this book and you will peer into what is REALLY "behind the curtain" of the privatization agenda.

                                4 out of 5 stars Powerful Book.......2006-03-03

Strengths - This book makes a very articulate argument against privatization from a philosophical viewpoint, spanning several areas of "industry" (health care, schools, prisons, etc.) and why a vibrant public sector benefits not only the poor and middle class, but corporations themselves. The sections on privatizing prisons is particularly illuminating, given the authors' experience with advocacy in this particular realm. Unlike other books, this one actually does come up with an alternate plan to the current privatization schemes, unlike other books which just "rage against the machine".

Weaknesses - Other than the sections on prisons, facts and figures seem to be lacking. There are plenty of solid statistics backing up the hard economic reality that the book argues out there, they just don't include them. I also could do without the poetry, it really doesn't add anything to the argument and seems more of a distraction.

One neutral comment - The book indicates that some corporations are trying to put their employees on Medicaid, transferring economic responsibility to the government. In reality, they don't want Medicaid to exist at all, so they don't have to pay "high" business taxes...and we are essentially left with a cash-pay health care industry where only those with the means to pay get even adequate care.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary Reading for Wonks and Activists.......2006-01-11

The Fox in the Henhouse is a compelling and very readable expose of how many vital public functions--healthcare, mass transit, prisons, santitation, military functions and even water--are being taken over by ever-larger and greedy corporations. the authors discuss both the history of privatization and recent, disturbing examples. Anyone concerned with the future of our country and our planet will be informed and moved to action to counter the trends detailed in this timely book.
