Book Description

The gene has become a cultural icon and an increasingly rich source of imagery and ideas for visual artists. Drawing on a wide range of contemporary painting and sculpture, The Molecular Gaze: Art in the Genetic Age explores the moral and bioethical questions these works address. What does it mean to be human? What is "identity" in a society of genetically manipulated individuals? Questions like these are growing louder as genetic technology advances and the public examines the ethical consequences more widely. Suzanne Anker and Dorothy Nelkin, an artist and a social scientist, have written a thought-provoking and visually fascinating book for scientists, artists, students, and general readers intrigued by the anxiety and exhilaration of the genetic age.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An artistic journey through contemporary scientific ideas.......2004-02-23

This is a very inspiring book. An excellent and complete overview of how genetic research is permeating popular culture, of how the gene has become a powerful and pervasive icon with a social meaning that goes beyond its biological properties.
This is an excellent volume for those who are interested in the regular shifts of boundaries between the domains of art and science. The authors explore the rise of an increasingly important new trend in contemporary art involving science by documenting the ideas and images that artists are using in association with the genetic view of life. They underline and provide insight into the social and cultural meaning of genetic research and of genetic essentialism through contemporary artists' interpretation of scientific process. In its well odered and relevantly different sections, Suzanne Anker and Dorothy Nelkin touch upon topics such as the sequencing of the genome and the reduction of humans to 'molecularl texts', the concept of identity, genetic engineering, the creation of transgenics and chimeras, assisted reproduction and cloning.
It is thorough work and well written, with the necessary historical references. A continuous, witty, appropriate and precise account of the questions, concepts, ideas and images fluctuating between the realm of science and that of art. I highly recommend it. A very good buy.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Just What You're Looking for...If You're the Right Reader.......2007-04-09

Judged on merit alone, Vol. 2 of ParaKiss gets 5 STARS. I gave it a 4 because its not a story that many people (i.e. males and girls under 16) will appreciate.

Yukari's experiences are definitely filtered through a feminine perspective. Males are likely to have trouble relating to her thoughts and reactions. Girls under 16 are likely to be enthralled by Vol. 2's racy (but not raunchy) heat........but in Vol. 2, George starts to show that cool guys like him can be downright *c-o-l-d*. Girls under 16 tend to like "fantasy romance"--ideal love stories where the arguments never escalate beyond cute InuYasha/Kagome banter. They want to see their daydreams on paper....whereas ParaKiss Vol. 2 will appeal more to older girls, who know heartache and will be able to reflect on their own experiences.

That said, other parts of ParaKiss Vol. 2 actually cracked me up laughing. When Arashi gets mad at George for deciding to do a difficult design, look at what's in Arashi's hand! And after Geroge tells Yukari to return some books on the library, look at what the rabbit is doing on the couch behind him. ParaKiss Vol. 2 is sternly dramatic at times, but it is not too heavy-handed.

    4 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2004-09-09

Compare to the first 4 volumes, vol. 5 is a letdown. Not so much b'cos of the ending, it seems the author was out of time, squeezing the story should have a couple more volumes into one volume. At times, it seems abrupt and a bit far-fetched, probably just haven't been given enough time to adjust to it.

The author sometimes have a bizzare way to put things together, there are parts in the last volume, I find it a bit strange for my taste, it could well possibly due to the translation (since I don't read Japanese). In short, it's a bit anti-climatic.

5 out of 5 stars Surprise twist ending!.......2004-05-27

I want to write a review without spoiling anything for someone who hasn't read it yet. Let's just say that this book has a happy ending, but not the ending you expected. Not the kind Disney would feed you. Let's just say Arashi has issues with Hiroyuki, George & Yukari are still questioning their relationship over their couriers,Everyone makes fun of George's committment issues like dating more than one person at a time, & Isabella runs away with someone he loves. Lots of gay jokes like in book one & many appearences by sexy Seiji. Ths book does a beautiful job of softly bouncing back & forth between humor & drama. It seems like I've told you a lot, but I haven't really told you anything.

5 out of 5 stars Paradise Kiss - Volume 5: Yay Isabella on the cover!!!!.......2004-05-23

This volume of course, starts exactly where we left off in Volume 4. The show is over and George is dealing with the fact that his designs are to unique to ever be widely accepted. Yukari abd George's relationship has hit a plateau and Yukari's not sure where to go with the relationship.

I really don't want to say anything else about the plot, but I will say that this, as far as shoujo goes, is the most realistic one I've ever read. I mean even though there are some unrealistic characters(Seiji for example), the story always stays firmly rooted in reality. And the ending is no different. It is a very bittersweet ending, I wouldn't have ended it differently, but its still very bittersweet.

I hope you enjoy this last volume of Paradise Kiss, I did, oh, and if you need ANY reason to read it, you find out Isabella's real name. hehe ;P

    God Bless & *enjoy* ~Amy

    5 out of 5 stars Parakiss v02: Even better.......2004-04-06

In Volume 1 of Paradise Kiss, you were just getting introduced to all the characters and the world of Yukari and the world of the Yaza Arts kids. And watching them come together was fun because you got to see all these great clothes and there was a lot of fun humor and fun and intriguing characters. In Volume 2 however, obviously, the story must move beyond that, or it would majorly suck. :p

Ai Yazawa does a very good job of moving the story onward and keeping you interested every step of the way. There is the fashion, but it seems a little less forward in this Volume. The story is pushed to the front more, and the characters even more so then in the last volume.

The main development in Volume 2 is the character of Yukari, she was a fairly flimsy character in Volume 1, flighty and indescisive. But now she is beginning to grow up, beginning to grow into a woman. With the help of her newfound love George. Okay, maybe that sounds cheesey, but ITS NOT!!! So that wasn't a perfect way to word it, but oh well, it will have to do.

In this Volume Yukari is faced with a dillema: 1. Continuing to lie to her parents about where she is all the time and helping George and them with the dress and blowing off school, or 2. Growing up and telling her parents the truth, even if it means she has to leave school and home and venture in to a territory that is new to her. That is the main focus in this volume. Also of course, her relationship with George is all mixed in with it too. But I am glad that Yazawa-san took the time to really develop her character more. Because quite frankly, the series wouldn't survive if she hadn't.

If, you love Volume 1, you will NO DOUBT love Volume 2, like me, it will leave you wanting more after you're done. :D
Unless you have something seriously wrong with you? Hmmmm

    God Bless ~Amy

Workflow-focused, project-based, best-practices approach. Hands-on tutorials interspersed with referential material in each chapter. It's obvious from speaking both to customers and spending time on-line that users crave specific types of information related to their disciplines. More specifically, the information relates to how VIZ fits into their workflow. Given that VIZ is a different tool from most design tools, it requires them to change their workflow to match the product. The primary focus of this book would be to show users how to minimize the amount of "shifting" they have to do to use VIZ as well as how to get the most out of VIZ by understanding its features.

To summarize, the book will accomplish two main goals for presenting VIZ:

The CD-ROM includes all the files that are needed to complete the exercises in each chapter.

    5 out of 5 stars Book for a true 3d modeler.......2003-04-24

This is the best max/Viz book I have used. I've been learning Max/viz on my own for about 4 months now and after getting this book the program has been completely demystified. Max has a really complex interface that scares people away and does not lend to trial and error and that is exactly where this book excels at. The step by step tutorials are helpful even though I'm using Viz4.
This is the best book for anyone serious about Max/Viz because it simplifies the modeling aspects a lot and even helps 3d novices to understand the gist of 3d modelling. Unlike a lot of Max books it dedicates a sizeable amount of time to modelling through tutorials. Most Max books I've come across treat modelling as a step child and dive into animation and materials. How do you animate without modelling?
Anyways I recomend this book to anyone learning Max/Viz it will prepare you for more advanced levels.

    5 out of 5 stars Best 3D Studio Book.......2003-01-19

Forget any of the other books on Max or Viz. This one is the BEST for Architects & Designers. I learned more from this book than I did in an entire semester at school. I used it on Viz 4 -and other than a few differences, mainly the sub-object button, the instructions are the same.

5 out of 5 stars Inside 3D Studio VIZ 3.......2002-03-07

Great, Great, Great book. Just the right material for the intermediate to the advanced, with great tips and tricks. I found the format of the book easy to follow and the lessons very intuitive.
I cannot wait for the VIZ 4 book!!

5 out of 5 stars Forget the Tutorials (icluded with Viz).......2001-04-19

I learned more in the first chapter of this book than I did by following ALL of the tutorials included with Viz. A great self-teaching guide.

5 out of 5 stars If your serious about VIZ you need this book!.......2001-01-26

Over the course of the last year I have been teaching myself 3d studio viz. When this book finally shipped I immediately ordered one, and am I glad I did. I find every chapter gives me some tips for modelling in this powerful program that I never would have thought of on my own. Every chapter is well written but be advised that you should have an understanding of viz before working through this book. If your just starting with the software, do the tutorials that ship with the software before moving on to this book. The tutorials are quite good at reinforcing the concepts but assume that you have some viz experience under your belt. A great book - period!

3 out of 5 stars The Vol. 2 is not as good as Vol. 1.......2006-03-10

I received the book recently. Compared with its Vol. 1, this book is not as good. I've just gone over Chapters 14 and 15. The examples are not as clearly presented as the ones in Vol. 1. I have to say this book is not up to my expectations, but the book, of course, can still help.

5 out of 5 stars Must have to accompany the textbook.......2005-10-20

The title, Survival Guide, is exactly as it means. This workbook, that accompanies `Intermediate Accounting' by Donald Kieso, is necessary to survive and understand intermediate accounting! The key is it gives you many more examples and probable situations to solve than the textbook could handle. I would not have done as well as I did in class without it!

4 out of 5 stars Problem-Solving Survival Guide: Int Act. Vol. 2 Ch 15-24.......2005-09-24

Completing the workbook items really helps reinforce concepts and offers great practice for tests. The book is not perfect. There's an occasional typo, and I wish there was more space to write in the workbook, and I was expecting it to cost a bit less, but in my opinion the book is very worthwhile to use.

      4 out of 5 stars Intermediate Accounting.......2005-08-03

Haven't used this book yet. Will next semester. Volume I of this series was of great use to me. By practising the exercises my memory retention and understanding went a whole lot further. I would say this would be a worthwhile purchase.

      Book Description

In language that vividly evokes the lush summers of Cairo and the stark beauty of the Arabian desert, Leila Ahmed tells a moving tale of her Egyptian childhood growing up in a rich tradition of Islamic women and describes how she eventually came to terms with her identity as a feminist living in America.

As a young woman in Cairo in the 1940s and '50s, Ahmed witnessed some of the major transformations of this century--the end of British colonialism, the creation of Israel, the rise of Arab nationalism, and the breakdown of Egypt's once multireligious society. Amid the turmoil, she searched to define herself--and to see how the world defined her--as a woman, a Muslim, an Egyptian, and an Arab. In this memoir, she poignantly reflects upon issues of language, race, and nationality, while unveiling the hidden world of women's Islam. Ahmed's story will be an inspiration to anyone who has ever struggled to define their own cultural identity.

An Egyptian woman's "richly insightful account of the inner conflicts of a generation coming of age during and after the collapse of European imperialism." --The New York Times Book Review

      5 out of 5 stars Lifesaver!!.......2007-10-05

I needed this book for a course I'm taking, and not one local bookstore had it in stock. I logged on to trusty Amazon, ordered it, and had it in my hands (with assigned reading completed) before my next class. The memoir itself had started pretty slowly (alot of Egyptian history), but has taken off quite nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Leila Ahmed is a great writer!.......2006-12-26

I enjoyed very much reading this book. The level of description used is capable of transporting you to Leila's birthplace and enjoy her life's journey. This book reads like a novel even though it is a biography. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the Pre- and Post-Nasser era in Egypt and how it affected the Egyptian middle class of the time. Another book about Egypt during that era I would recommend is Samia Serag El-din's The Cairo House. Happy reading!

5 out of 5 stars I relate to this book on so many levels...........2005-01-26

I wasn't sure what I would find when I chose this book. But Dr. Ahmed's thoughts on creating her identity and the societal forces that crafted her upbringing are astounding. Her tale of defining herself as a woman, an Egyptian, an Arab, a Muslim, and an American resonated very deeply with me.....

5 out of 5 stars An eye opening account of what it means to be a Muslim.......2003-12-17

I thought that this book was amazing. I've read many books about Islam but I think that this book actually gave me a sense of what it means to be a Muslim. Sometimes when reading about religions we often only get an overview of the practices and beliefs of a religion but we rarely hear from believers of a particular religion and how they incorporate the beliefs of their religion into their everyday lives. For me, it was also interesting to read about Egypt during the 40's and 50's because it was something I have never studied before. It was interesting to see the religious diversity in Eygpt and how quickly that all changed with the rise of Nasser. Another thing I had never realized that Egyptians practically had the title Arab forced upon them, but most would never otherwise identify themselves as Arab. I think this book really exposed me to a world and a lifestyle that I had never known existed, and I think this is a must read for anyone who is open to seeing a new perspective on their world.

      4 out of 5 stars A Border Passage.......2003-12-15

A Border Passage by Leila Ahmed is an interesting book and definitely worth your time. Within this book Ahmed confront issues of colonialism and differences between the Islam of women and that of men. The story is written as an autobiography as Ahmed recounts her childhood. The juxtaposition of the Egypt and England, where she goes to school, illuminates considerations of post-colonial loss of identity. A book that I strongly recommend for anyone interested in learning more about Islam.

        Book Description

The German Army of World War II was the first to fully realise the benefits of using airborne troops alongside armoured formations. German Airborne Divisions became an integral part of the blitzkrieg operations that overran much of Western Europe during 1940 and 1941, from the historic raid on the Belgian fortress of Eben-Emael to the pyrrhic victory over British and Commonwealth forces on the island of Crete. This title looks at the creation, evolution, and early operational deployment of the German airborne forces (‘Fallschirmtruppe’), through highly detailed orders of battle, TOEs and examinations of crucial aspects such as doctrine, training, command and control, and the concept of vertical envelopment.

3 out of 5 stars A Promising but Weak Hybrid Product.......2004-06-28

Osprey's new Battle Orders series attempts to blend features from the campaign, elite and order of battle series into a hybrid. Unfortunately, this type of hybrid is far too complex for a 96-page format and results in a promising but ultimately flawed product. Bruce Quarrie, a journalist well-known for writing on the German military in the Second World War, attempts in Battle Orders #4 to summarize the command, organization, evolution, doctrine, training, tactics and equipment of the German airborne forces in 1940-1941 (actually, there was only one true airborne division in this period). This is a worthy task, but far beyond the structural restraints of this format and the reader will sense that the author was squeezed on every page. It is particularly obvious in the author's shallow treatment of the well-known operations at Fort Eban Emael and Crete. While this volume is a handy reference on this subject, it cannot stand alone.

After a short introduction on the background of the airborne forces concept, Quarrie lays out the primary missions established by the Germans for their nascent airborne arm: capturing key objectives such as bridges, seizure of enemy airfields and to create a new front unexpected by the enemy. Actually, this "combat mission" section is one of the better elements in the Battle Orders series and while succinct, is useful for military professionals. Surprisingly, the section on doctrine and training is only 3 pages, but the section on command, control & intelligence is 8 pages. Quarrie notes that the German airborne branch was often let down by Abwehr intelligence, resulting in stronger-than-expected resistance.

Nearly half the volume is occupied with a very detailed analysis of the two German airborne divisions: the army's 22nd "Luftland" (air-portable) and the Luftwafe's 7th Flieger Division (7FJ). Military professionals will particularly enjoy the numerous line and block order of battle charts in this section, which detail sub-units down to company and even platoon level. Quarrie's description of how the 7FJ was formed under Reich Marshal Goering's direction is particularly interesting; rather than a homogenous force, Germany's first airborne division was glued together from "a pot-pourri of disparate units," including Luftwaffe, army, SA and even police detachments. At the start of the war, 7FJ numbered only 4,000 men and had virtually no artillery or support units. Hitler decided to keep the airborne under wraps until they could be used decisively against the Anglo-French (a smart decision), so they were not used in Poland and only two battalions were used in Denmark-Norway. It is interesting that of the three airborne companies used in the initial invasion of Norway, one was overwhelmed and forced to surrender. By May 1940, the 7FJ was still a weak division that consisted primarily of airborne infantry without support weapons and even the division staff was amazingly junior (the operations officer was only a captain and the intelligence officer was a lieutenant). Furthermore, there was a serious shortage of senior officers even in the line battalions, which were normally led by captains. Lacking organic artillery, 7FJ was almost totally dependent upon air support. By the invasion of Crete in May 1941, 7FJ had grown to a reinforced division with 13 infantry battalions but still very weak in supporting weapons.

Quarrie's treatment of Fort Eban Emael, the landings in Holland and particularly Crete, are extremely shallow. While this is not a campaign title and the author asserts that these actions are well known, that does not absolve him of providing readers with the essential details of these actions. Quarrie provides good detail on the assault landings of the Koch detachment in Belgium in May 1940, but virtually ignores the capture of Fort Eban Emael. Indeed, nowhere in the volume does Quarrie mention the use of hollow charges at Fort Eban Emael - an important oversight. Furthermore, Quarrie spends over 20 pages detailing the organization of the 22nd Luftlande division, then spends only a few sentences discussing the division's operations in Holland (it's one and only air-landing operation of the war). The Luftlande division's specific objectives and casualties are noticeably absent. While Quarrie's OB data for Crete is very good, he really only concerns himself with the operations around Máleme and virtually ignores the rest. Given the fact that the Germans made so few airborne drops in this period, ignoring regimental-size drops at Retimo and Heraklion seems to hurt the content of this volume. It is also disappointing, given the heavy German airborne losses on Crete, that Quarrie makes no effort to discuss losses by each regiment or battalion, or how the division was structured immediately after Crete.

The volume includes six tactical maps: Waalhaven/Rotterdam landings; Dordrecht/Moerdijk landings; a plan of Fort Eban Emael; the Koch detachment landings around Maastricht; the Corinth canal operation; and the Máleme landings on Crete. Unfortunately, Quarrie does not include any operational-level maps, depicting the layout of all German airborne landings in Holland or Crete, so it will be difficult for readers to get a comprehensive understanding of the operational use of German airborne troops or how they supported the campaign plan. Quarrie also includes a section on tactics, which notes that the Germans were initially restricted by a parachute that could only handle about 190 pounds (thus German paratroops could not drop with weapons). Poor navigational equipment also restricted the Germans to daylight-only airborne operations. The author also includes sections on weapons and equipment, as well as lessons learned. Essentially, this volume shows that the Germans glued together an airborne force for their early Blitzkrieg campaigns but the force had many of the weaknesses inherent in an experimental unit: small numbers, first-generation equipment, incomplete MTOE, inexperienced leadership, inadequate logistics, etc. Quarrie's volume whets the appetite of military specialists for a single volume that packs a wealth of information on historic formations such as these, but the defects of this hybrid format will ultimately leave most readers unsatisfied.

It's somewhat rare to see an entire grassroots political organization listed as the author of a book but it's perfectly in keeping with the spirit of both MoveOn.org and this handbook on civic activism authored by some of the group's members. It features 50 short chapters (one or two pages each in most cases) authored by non-celebrities from all walks of life who took it upon themselves to change the world. Some of the ideas are ambitious, as in the case of a liberal-minded Texan who decided the best way to make his views known was to run against Republican stalwart Tom DeLay in the GOP primary. Others are much simpler: write a letter to the editor, sign a petition, or go to a rally. But even in those seemingly obvious tactics, there are interesting techniques offered that could make a simple act a much more effective one. Included in each tip are bullet-pointed tips from MoveOn organizers to help the reader translate the idea into real action. While MoveOn is certainly not the first group to suggest simple steps to change the world, this volume scores points for it's concise editing and populist authorship. It's not a book to curl up with in front of the fire, it's meant to be thrown into a backpack or purse on the way to the next protest, campaign rally, or discussion group. The slant, like the organization itself, is a liberal one but the writers generally stop short of expanding on their political beliefs, choosing instead to focus on what those beliefs inspired them to do with their time and energy. Brief interstitial essays by notables such as Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi introduce sections of the book, providing expert gravity without detracting from the common person message. --John Moe

        Book Description

With more than 2 million members, MoveOn is at the cutting edge of a new model for political activism. In their first-ever book, they take their message offline with MoveOn's 50 Ways to Love Your Country: How to Find Your Political Voice and Become a Catalyst for Change, in an effort to jumpstart an even broader civic dialogue and inspire all to become involved in our political process. With introductions by Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi, Gail Sheehy, David Fenton, and the MoveOn staff, MoveOn's 50 Ways to Love Your Country is a political call-to-action guide that includes 50 essays from MoveOn members across the country. Each essay is a compelling personal story with action items and resources. Simple ideas are illuminated, such as "Vote, No Matter What," about a dying man's wish to cast a ballot, as are more dynamic actions, such as "Start a Petition," which chronicles a couple's quest to protect endangered wolves in Alaska. For those who feel powerless or overwhelmed, angry or apathetic — or just want to do something, but don't know how — MoveOn's 50 Ways to Love Your Country answers the question so many people are asking, "What can I do?"

5 out of 5 stars Disregard the one star reviews.......2005-09-12

The reason I purchased this book was because of the 1 star reviews. I felt that the majority of them were simply efforts at anonymously posting their mad dog patriotic views. And I was right.
This is a very good book. It gives real-world examples of how to become involved in state and federal government processes. While not every example showed results, the fact is that we do need to become involved in the democratic process, regardless of partisanship.
I feel it is the height of intellectual dishonesty to
        1. slam a publication because of the publisher,
        2. Not read the bloody thing,
        3. Not put your name on the review.
And anyone who feels that civil dissent is NOT to be tolerated, should go and re-read the history of this great nation. Because they are automatons in a time when we need thinking citzenry.
To complete the quote, "My country, right or wrong: right to keep right, wrong to make right."

        4 out of 5 stars Almost there........2005-05-12

Yes, it has its partisan leanings but at least this book provides a less harmful way to be truly patriotic unlike what the rightwingers continuously preach. The only problem I have with the book is getting the Democratic party to truly unite. Even today, there are major rifts between the centrists and liberals in the Democratic Party whereas the conservatives and libertarians in the Republican Party stick together like soldiers in an army even if it's all about merely rubber stamping. I see moveon.org is starting to catch up to that understanding in the recent times compared to the time they released this book way before the election. I guess at that time, it was all about "Anybody But Bush" strategy which failed mainly because of the failure to resolve the major divisions and infighting between the centrists and liberals in the Democratic Party long before election day. While I like this book because it helps you think with assertivity and true patriotism, there's still room for growth.

5 out of 5 stars I'm conservative and I approve of this book.......2005-04-26

Well, let's put it this way. I used to appreciate the conservative movement but after the way the religious fascists along with the rotten economic libertarians , who wanted to take away our safety nets that our parents and grandparents had but we and our children will suffer without, formed unlikely alliances in corrupting conservatism by cashing in on political correctness to achieve the worst on laizze faire, I finally decided that it was time to move on. While like most residents in my area of Rankin, MS , I was originally hostile against the organization, I finally decided to read their book and I must say they're not so bad. Sure, they're not perfect but it sure as hell is better than the current rightwing government and forces that are destroying people's lives day after day. And since I am a true pro-lifer not the Delay/Robertson fake type, I strongly recommend everyone to give this book a look and take back America.

5 out of 5 stars Great 4 Beginning Activists & People Just Generally Fed Up!.......2005-04-01

Reading other reviews where people rated this book as, "Good, but nothing new that I didn't know already", I noticed that many of them claimed that they are already involved in serious political activism. More and more "everyday" people are starting to get angry and/or fed up with the existing State of the Union and the people who are currently controlling it. These newcomers want to start helping to make a change for the better, but are not experienced enough in activism to know just where to start. Many of us hear from others all the time, "What can I do? Me alone can't change anything..." This book has the inspiration and resources to help steer even the smallest person towards the right direction.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to get out of the current media spin.......2005-03-20

More negative reviewers would rather have listen to 24/7 rightwing propaganda like Rush Limbaugh and FOXNews all the while ignoring other points of view. If you're a liberal or moderate trying to find some tolerance or a conservative fed up with the bait-and-switch spew from the fake conservatives like Bush, Limbaugh, Gingrich, O'reilly, Hannity, Coulter, Tom Delay, Pat Robertson, Frank Luntz, Jerry Fartwell, and such, please take the time to read this book and help take back our country peacefully and make it a good model for other countries to follow.

Besides, you're shooting yourself in the foot if you are calling MoveOn a corrupt special interest while at the same time saying nothing about Bush's totally corrupt "Pioneer Rangers" special interest in TX and oil giants like Enron and Halliburton that has already made this country worse than Saudi Arabia.

              Book Description

Many marine biologists have concentrated on the species approach to the study of marine vertebrates. Although it has long been recognized that species interact, it has been far easier to study that interaction from the viewpoint of only one of the participants. Recently biologists have tried to study interactions from the viewpoint of all participants. Because of the high visibility of birds, it is easy to observe their interactions with other vertebrates such as fish, porpoises, and whales, but it is difficult to obtain quantitative data on their interactions. Seabirds and Other Marine Vertebrates, the only comprehensive examination of its kind, fills a particular niche: that of pulling together in one place the exciting current work in marine species interactions between seabirds and other marine vertebrates.

The majority of essays in this work are structured to include a balance between literature review, original data, and synthesis. They concern obvious aspects of predation, competition, and commensalism. These topics relate directly to food acquisition and survival in a marine environment, and provide paradigms for the future study of marine birds and other organisms.

Since man's encroachment in coastal and pelagic environments is increasing and poses a threat to marine birds, a volume elucidating various aspects of their interactions has multiple uses. As well as being of value to ornithologist, this work should be useful to other vertebrate biologists, behaviorists, ecologists and managers involved with coastal planning. It is a forerunner of things to come in marine biology.
