Customer Reviews:
very dated.......2007-06-01
I love Beatrix Potter. I love knitting. A book that combines both? This I had to see, simply out of curiosity.
Unfortunately, the book was published in the late 1980s, so the patterns (mostly for children -- which I expected, considering it's Beatrix Potter) are extremely dated. Instead of timeless or even "traditional" patterns, most of them are the type of garments you look back on as a child of the 80s and say, "I can't believe my mom dressed me in that." You know, boxy sweaters with bulky frill around the collars, in pastel pink with a big bunny cross stitched on the front.
Of course I wasn't really expecting to find any great patterns to add to my collection, but I thought maybe it would have some cute baby designs with a Potter aesthetic (you know, for the future baby I might one day have). Maybe if I were an accomplished knitter I could find a way to salvage some parts of the patterns, and update them to fit into this decade...but...I'm not. Oh well.
Great for traditionalist knitters and Beatrix Potter fans.......2005-12-16
First, let me say that I haven't looked at this book since the early 90s. It belongs to my mother, who lives in another state, and so I can't look through it again before reviewing. I have very warm memories of this book, which may be slightly colored by the fact that it was my first real exposure to good knitting patterns.
Here's what I remember:
This book is a collection of very traditional English patterns. In that vein, and considering that it was published in the 80s, the sweaters tend towards the boxy, and a few are on the stodgy side. If you like very traditional knits, and/or don't mind adjusting a pattern to reduce the design ease, this is a great book.
The patterns fall into three categories:
- directly inspired by Beatrix Potter's books (like Peter Rabbit's cardigan and tam)
- loosely inspired by her books (traditional English country knits)
- designs featuring Beatrix Potter characters (the flopsy bunnies, Peter Rabbit, etc.)
The patterns cover a wide range of skill levels and techniques, including intarsia, cables and lace. There are patterns for men, women, babies and kids, and many of the them are sized for the entire family. I remember the patterns as being very well-written, with excellent tips.
Since it's such an old book, I'd imagine that the yarns called for have been discontinued. However, since the styles and techniques are so classic, you shouldn't have any trouble finding good yarns to substitute.
If you're interested in trendier knits and silhouettes, don't buy this. If you're looking for classic styles or don't mind doing some adaptation, this is an excellent choice, and a lot of patterns for the money.

Book Description
Across the Great Divide is a vivid and rollicking account of The Band's journey across three decades. Spanning the history of American rock and boasting a supporting cast that includes Dylan, Janis Joplin, and U2, the book brilliantly captures the raw magic and complex personalities of a group George Harrison called "the best band in the history of the universe." This revised U.S. edition includes a postscript, together with an obituary of Rick Danko and a brand-new interview with Robbie Robertson.
Customer Reviews:
This revised edition offers a detailed survey of its members.......2006-12-14
George Harrison called The Band 'the best in the history of the universe', and other rock musicians applauded them as well, so it's importantb to note ACROSS THE GREAT DIVIDE: THE BAND AND AMERICA is essential for any in-depth understanding of the group and it's lasting influence on rock music. This revised edition offers a detailed survey of its members, with the new US edition including a postscript, obituary of Rick Danko, and a new interview with Robbie Robertson, among other features.

A Classic Book, Revised, Updated and Expanded.......2006-11-14
First written some years ago, this book has long been out of print. Now Hal Leonard has finally issued a new revised and expanded edition. It contains all the information from the original book plus updating the information on the members of the band. This includes an obituary of Rick Danko and a brand-new interview with Robbie Robertson.
With the years that Mr. Hoskyns has put into this book, it is likely to remain the definitive book on 'The Band' and on the early years of rock. The Band pioneered not only music, but many other things. Here were a group of young men that were suddenly thrust into the spotlight. Here was a band that put out two of the most significant albums of our time, and then fell apart.
This book chronicles the interplay between the members of the band that led to their breaking up, it talks about the suicide of Richard Manuel, and of course the life that Rick Danko lived with drugs and pain killers until his fatal heart attack.
This is one of those books that is literally a labor of love by a professional writer of course, but also by a devoted fan.

50 Simple Steps You Can Take To Sell Your Home Faster.......2007-01-19
Excellent!
Can't miss using the ideas presented.
Just What You Want.......2005-09-22
This book IS just what you want if you want to sell your house. I'm a Realtor, so I feel especially qualified to say this.
SOLD in less than 24 hours.......2005-08-08
This book tells it like it is. You want the most money out of your investment, than try to do all the things listed to prepare your house before you call a realtor or have people view it. It is a lot of work - it took me three months - but everyone who viewed my home said what a lovely home I had, how well-maintained it was, and I had an offer in less than 24 hours for more than my listing price! I also heard a lot of comments from potential buyers about how dirty and cluttered other homes they visited were - so much so that it was hard to see what the home had to offer. A very, very worthwhile investment.
selling tips.......2005-07-06
this book is great, we did everything wrong and payed for it.
this was a great help with our other properties. Highly recommend this to others.
A small gem.......2005-05-24
Invaluable! Solid, practical, up-to-date advice with no fluff, from a woman who knows the real estate market inside and out. Written in a friendly, conversational style--not "technical" at all. I followed Glink's advice, and my condo sold in three days (to the first person who looked at it) for $1,750 above the asking price.
Book Description
"I read My Body Politic with admiration, sometimes for the pain that all but wept on the page, again for sheer exuberant friendships, for self-discovery, political imagination, and pluck. . . . Wonderful! In a dark time, a gift of hope.
-Daniel Berrigan, S.J.
"The struggles, joys, and political awakening of a firecracker of a narrator. . . . Linton has succeeded in creating a life both rich and enviable. With her crackle, irreverence, and intelligence, it's clear that the author would never be willing to settle. . . . Wholly enjoyable."
-Kirkus Reviews
"Linton is a passionate guide to a world many outsiders, and even insiders, find difficult to navigate. . . . In this volume, she recounts her personal odyssey, from flower child . . . to disability-rights/human rights activist."
-Publishers Weekly
"Witty, original, and political without being politically correct, introducing us to a cast of funny, brave, remarkable characters (including the professional dancer with one leg) who have changed the way that 'walkies' understand disability. By the time Linton tells you about the first time she was dancing in her wheelchair, you will feel like dancing, too."
---Carol Tavris, author of Anger: The Misunderstood Emotion
"This astonishing book has perfect pitch. It is filled with wit and passion. Linton shows us how she learned to 'absorb disability,' and to pilot a new and interesting body. With verve and wonder, she discovers her body's pleasures, hungers, surprises, hurts, strengths, limits, and uses."
-Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, author of Extraordinary Bodies: Figuring Physical Disability in American Culture and Literature
"An extraordinarily readable account of life in the fast lane... a brilliant autobiography and a great read."
-Sander L. Gilman, author of Fat Boys: A Slim Book
While hitchhiking from Boston to Washington, D.C., in 1971 to protest the war in Vietnam, Simi Linton was involved in a car accident that paralyzed her legs and took the lives of her young husband and her best friend. Her memoir begins with her struggle to regain physical and emotional strength and to resume her life in the world. Then Linton takes us on the road she traveled (with stops in Berkeley, Paris, Havana) and back to her home in Manhattan, as she learns what it means to be a disabled person in America.
Linton eventually completed a Ph.D., remarried, and began teaching at Hunter College. Along the way she became deeply committed to the disability rights movement and to the people she joined forces with. The stories in My Body Politic are populated with richly drawn portraits of Linton's disabled comrades, people of conviction and lusty exuberance who dance, play-and organize--with passion and commitment.
My Body Politic begins in the midst of the turmoil over Vietnam and concludes with a meditation on the U.S. involvement in the current war in Iraq and the war's wounded veterans. While a memoir of the author's gradual political awakening, My Body Politic is filled with adventure, celebration, and rock and roll-Salvador Dali, James Brown, and Jimi Hendrix all make cameo appearances. Linton weaves a tale that shows disability to be an ordinary part of the twists and turns of life and, simultaneously, a unique vantage point on the world.

Another Way To Live With A Spinal Cord Injury........2007-02-12
I would advise the person and the family of the person with a spinal cord injury (SCI) to learn. When you become able to read, that is. I found that I could not read anything at first. Partly because of denial and partly because I was suddenly pluncked down in an alien world, much like the world I had always lived in, just considerably taller. The simplest things I had done before my SCI became incredibly difficult, if they were possible at all. My mind, body and emotions were in such shock that I could not read anything. The information which was given to me became impossible to understand. I didn't ever think that I would just get up and walk, although my dreams were (and still are) full of running, climbing and even flying. I was dealing with pain that cannot be discribed and I got remarkably little help with it. Until my constant pain was somewhat under control, I didn't plan, for the future or even for the next moment.
The idea of having some kind of normal life was not even a consideration for me. Just breathing and existing; in an odd sort of way a kind of Zen "being in the moment," was all I could achieve. And it was NOT a form of enlightenment; on the contrary, it was an "indarkenment."
So I might not recommend this book for the newly injured. It is possible that it would not make sense, even if the newly injured person were able to read. For someone who is past that first shock and confusion, though, this could be very helpful. It is clear in pointing out that there are as many different people with a SCI as there are people without one. Very clear and helpful in pointing out the main directions which are still available for people with a SCI. Get this book for someone you love, but don't push it. Just make sure it is available and, when the person is really ready, it will be there for them.
For those who want to gain insight into the life of an individual with a disablity.......2006-08-02
I am happy to recommend this book to anyone who wishes to gain insight into the daily, lifelong challenges faced by individuals with physical disabilities. It is a book which educates without slapping those of us without obvious disabilities in the face using the "you can't possibly understand how it is for me" method of "enlightenment." Instead it allows the reader to peer through a window into Ms. Linton's life, to develop an understanding of the many barriers and related challenges she and others with similar disabilities face related to what most people take for granted: traveling freely throughout one's environment, gaining an education, dancing, making love, making a life. The book educates by engaging the reader in the journey Ms. Linton has taken from her early days as an activist for peace to her later days as an advocate for equality.
A new classic.......2006-03-24
This is a beautiful book that I couldn't put down once I started reading. Linton's account of her entry into the world of the disabled and her gradual movement toward activism answers questions I've always been afraid to ask. Besides being funny, angry, compassionate, frank, and always interesting--she's a wonderful storyteller. The book reads like a great novel. It's as powerful as James McBride's memoir, The Color of Water, and should become a classic. Read it and you'll see why.
a gem.......2006-03-07
I innocently picked up this book from the table at a relative's house, read the first page and could not put it down. The story of Simi Linton's internal and external struggles and revelations in a new world are presented in an effective understated tone that treats the reader as a partner in the adventure. Along the way we get to examine our own attitudes about disability. The book is so well written and real that I feel that I have been taken for that 'ride' the little girl asked about (you have to read the book).

Book Description
As appropriate for a Welshman, Lord Chalfont takes his title from a Dylan Thomas poem, `Fern Hill'. His memoirs are the account of how a Welsh grammar schoolboy, whose ambition was to join the army, ended up, to his astonishment, in Harold Wilson's Labour government as a Peer and as Minister for Disarmament, and how, in a further unlikely twist, he found himself working for the Sultan of Brunei.
On the morning after Labour won the 1964 General Election in a landslide, and Harold Wilson became Prime Minister, the Defence Correspondent of The Times, Alun Gwynne-Jones, received a call to go forthwith to No 10 Downing Street. To his astonishment he was offered by Harold Wilson a Peerage, a seat on the Privy Councillor, and the position of `Minister for Disarmament'. For Gwynne-Jones, who took the title Lord Chalfont, life would never be the same again. Three of his six years as a FO minister coincided with George Brown as Foreign Secretary. His boorishness, his love of drink, led to some hair-raising stories, which Chalfont relates.
The second side of his public life, as a businessmen, allows him the opportunity to write about the Gummer family - he was a director of Shandwick, Peter Gummer's PR company; and he adds revelations about the life of Lonrho's controversial Chairman, `Tiny' Rowland, whose path he crossed.
Book Description
"McCaughan gives a vivid eyewitness report of the extraordinary events of the coming to power of Hugo Chávez. . . . His book will be welcomed by all those interested in the complexities of the most original political experiment in Latin America since the Cuban Revolution."-Richard Gott, author of In the Shadow of the Liberator
In August 2004, the Venezuelan public came out in record numbers to deliver an overwhelming vote of confidence. After many attempts to unseat him, Hugo Chávez, the former military man who took the country first by coup and then by ballot, again emerged as the people's choice. It was, in his words, "a victory for the people of Venezuela."
Yet despite Chávez's successes, having defended his post in six referendums, two elections and against one failed coup, Venezuela-one of the world's largest oil-exporting countries-is a nation deeply divided. The power struggle between the country's first indigenous head of state and his detractors expresses a larger conflict gripping the region.
In The Battle of Venezuela, Guardian reporter Michael McCaughan captures the drama of challenges to Chávez's presidency and on the streets of Caracas. In this detailed analysis of the political forces at work, McCaughan documents the role of the country's powerful and shrinking middle class, the effects of Chávez's social programs for his mainly poor constituents and the rise of the social movement whose members proclaim themselves "Chávistas."
Michael McCaughan has reported extensively from Latin America for The Irish Times and The Guardian, among others. He is author of True Crimes: Rodolfo Walsh, the Life and Times of a Radical Intellectual.
Customer Reviews:
A must.......2007-10-02
A must read for anyone interested in the new developments in Venezuela and the South. McCaughan does a great job in setting the historical context and then elaborating on Chavez -- with a welcomed inclusion of pros and cons, such as personal ambitions versus citizens advances accomplished over the years.
A pro-Chavez telling of recent Venezuelan history.......2007-03-09
I purchased this book hoping to get an objective look at the events that brought Chavez to power in Venezuela. Maybe that was not realistic given how polarizing Chavez is. The truth is that this book tells the story of the "Battle of Venezuela" from a left wing point of view. If that's what you're looking for then you'll probably enjoy it. That is all fine and good, but buyer beware.
excellent primer.......2005-12-11
With Venezuela and the Hugo Chavez government increasingly in the news today this important primer gives the reader a broad and comprehensive understanding of the rise of Chavez in Venezuela. McCaughan's engaged analysis informs an understanding of the rise to power of Hugo Chavez, the extent of his support and democratic legitimacy among the population of Venezuela, the background to his ideology and the political history of other social forces in Venezuelan society. For anyone interested in the development of Venezuela under Hugo Chavez and the new political pole emerging in South America this is an excellent book.
