Nam June Paik accompanies the first American retrospective of the Korean multi-media artist's work since 1982, bringing together the major works which define his many artistic contributions. While this was published to accompany an exhibition, it stands well on its own as a gathering of 300 illustrations and an essay, accompanying text descriptions of Paik and his works. It's a special challenge to bring multimedia works to life in print: this succeeds in capturing the gamut of Paik's creations.

Worth the price........2005-10-21
This is one of the only books on Maurice Durufle printed in English, and I highly recommend it. It gives insights on Durufle's wishes about the performances on his music, tips that he gave his students, corrections of his scores, and details about his life. This book is very useful for academics and performers alike.
Best English source on Duruflé.......2002-12-03
I just finished using this book (via Interlibrary Loan) for a paper, and this is by far the best source in English on Maurice Duruflé. The opening biography by James Frazier is the best I have read so far, the chapter on Duruflé's compositions by Jeffrey Reynolds was also very helpful, and though I did not use it for my paper, the biography of Duruflé's wife Marie-Madeleine written by her sister, Eliane, was wonderful.
Hopefully, I will eventually get my own copy of this.

Being a cleric lover, I found this book to be better then the last.
There is great focus on the duties of the cleric to his faith. Churches, congregations, conversions... their loyalty and actions to their God and people. It goes into depth of the vows a character should take, and the pennence of breaking such vows. Their place as a leader in the party and the community becomes stronger, more pronounced, and more important.
It introduces the power of singing to a cleric, with domain hymns that can be offensive as well as defensive.( they seem to have omitted the sun domain, though ) They placed a fair limit on the use of such hymns, and applied it to turning. They have personal as well as congregational hymns, the more powerful requiring a congregation of people. It adds more possibility to clerics in campaigns that lack alot of undead, or makes an even trade for those that do.
The feats in this book are wonderful. They touch the cleric as a leader, a spellcaster, undead destroyer, and self-sufficient person. Makes creating the cleric as a backup fighter seem a waste of such a "wise" character.
The new spells are diverse, there is probably one or two you would adopt depending on your character, alignment, god, and campaign.
This book brings new light to the class, and shows and helps a cleric to be more then the healer, but a critical leader of the party and their community.If you are a cleric person, this book is another must-have.
Not too bad a book.......2002-05-25
I found this book to be interesting, but not as excellent as the first two books in the series. The "concepts" are not as spectacular as in the first 2, but the prestige classes are nice. It gives methods for tinkering with Domain Spell alternative, but none that are that great of a replacement.
I do like the idea of telling which sacrifices are most appropiate for various gods depending on their domains granted. I also liked the idea of making sacrifices be worth something to do, although the boons granted as such seem quite weak.
If you like clerics, buy this book. If you can take or leave clerics, just consider this one if you have the spare change.

Forget 'Hedge Funds' for a moment - - this is a great book for introducing you to stocks, shares, buying and selling - ie, the whole business of the stock market.
The bonus is that the last 2-3 chapters, which finally get around to looking at Hedge Funds, are really clear and helpful.

In the realm of how-to books, "All About Hedge Funds" by Dr. Robert Jaeger is a real winner. Instructive, analytical and easy to read, it brings down to earth an investment tool that has long been a mystery to me and many others. The author, for more than 20 years the chief investment officer of a well-respected hedge fund, explains in a clear insightful style risk assessment, hedging techniques and many other facets of this intriguing method of investing. He includes the historical background which has shaped the hedge fund we know today. I found the book invaluable.

I've recommended this book many times to people who are new to working in the hedge fund industry. Though it's a couple of years old, it's a very readable overview of what hedge funds are about and how they work. Unlike many hedge fund books on the market, this one is both reasonably priced and useful.

I was looking for an introduction to hedge funds and found this book to be great as it builds up your knowledge starting at ground level with many comparisons between hedge funds and mutual funds and then it delves deeper into the specifics and peculiarities of hedge funds themselves including shorting, leverage, and other tactics.

Page 181 of this 309-page book starts with: "We have spent a lot of time looking at investment issues related to hedge funds: investment objectives, strategies, techniques, and so forth. The next few chapters take a brief look at some of the business and operational issues that arise in the hedge fund world." Finally! Well, page 205 hurries back to "The Menu of Hedge Fund Strategies" about longs and shorts, stocks and bonds and indexes and volatility. Why a publisher would cheat his readers with a title like "All about Hedge Funds" for what is just some investor's handbook is beyond me. Imagine considering serious participation in such fund and the term "Private Placement Memorandum" isn't even mentioned once in this book. Probably the author never heard of it: he intended to write about investing and did, but, discouraged by the crowded market in these books, shuffled in 23 pages about hedge funds so he could rename his book. I fell into the trap, make sure you don't.

This was a great book to escape to. If you love cooking and the beach, then this book is for you. Mel shares recipes, tells the tales of changing lifestyles, and paints an incredible picture of the island. I am ready to go pack and have dinner at Blanchards!

If you have ever been cornered by an innkeeper or B & B owner whose life contains five minutes of interesting tidbits, but who takes two hours dragging you through a poorly synthesized tale, you've already had the experience of reading this book. To make matters worse, the quality of writing and tone are comparable to a sixth grade essay along the lines of "What I Did on My Summer Vacation."
If you are looking for an interesting book about life as an American in the Caribbean, try Herman Wouk's semi-fictional "Don't Stop the Carnival."

Every once in a great while, you might stubble upon a truly captivating novel that is, at times, impossible to put down. Before you know it, you're submerged within it's pages, neglecting the clock, surpassing any predestinated points that you promised yourself to stop at. Bob and Melinda's "A Trip to the Beach" has justly enthralled many readers of prudent taste since first being published in 2000. For an absorbing and mesmeric account of two native Vermonters who inaugurated a simple but distant dream, born on a vacation to the Caribbean. On a whim, they move to a foreign country, and start a restaurant on the tiny, remote island of Anguilla. Entering a world of excitement, frustration, joy, and perseverance to live an anything but ordinary life. This seemingly envious lifestyle proves to be a gigantic undertaking in spite of all it's seductiveness. If the Blanchards for any instance took the reality of chasing their dreams during such a pivotal time in their lives lightly, they most likely wouldn't have a book to fill let alone embracement of such luscious success. The only melancholic fervor encountered is ending the book itself. If only it were longer!

Hipkat and ActionJunkie have summed it all up perfectly. Nothing else to add. Oh. Yes there is. I happened to be in a bookstore way back when this book was released and the Blanchardss were speaking. I pretty quickly observed they were quite charmed with themselves. I didn't stay to listen long. The book was passed to me by a co-worker. Couldn't finish it.

Self-Propelled Guns of the Tiger Family.......2000-12-17
Wolfgang Schneider is not only a consummate researcher, he is also a Colonel in the German Bundeswehr. This has opened the doors of many armor veterans of World War Two, who have shared their private snapshots and wartime experiences with the author. This has given Schneider the opportunity to create a unique series of books on German armor, and this little volume is a small example. It is a short but useful photo essay on three minor subtypes in the Tiger family, the Elefant, a self-propelled 88 mm gun on the chassis of Dr. Porsche's rejected Tiger P, the Sturmtiger, a turretless assault vehicle that launched converted antisubmarine rockets, and the Jagdtiger, a self-propelled 128mm antitank gun on the King Tiger chassis. There are more elaborate reference books available on all of these vehicles, but if you want a few useful photos to detail a model, this is an inexpensive option.

The other shoe never drops.......2003-11-09
Before critiquing this book, Mr. Walzer should be given some credit. He manages to make a good argument for pluralism, equality, and the like, and avoids the deus ex machina thought experiments a la Rawls (with "original positions") or the like. For that, Mr. Walzer should be thanked.
Now for the problems. Walzer, author of "Just and Unjust Wars" and "On Toleration" (among many others), is trying to defend a certain order of society where differences can be accepted and equality may be ensured. But Walzer's arguments suffer from a major problem - his starting point(s) are left undefended, and indeed sometimes even undefined. The key to his system is "shared meanings," an idea that he has used in other works (like "Just and Unjust Wars" [J&UW]) under various names. What these shared meanings are, Walzer generally avoids saying directly. As he mentioned in J&UW, Walzer tends to avoid the more complex questions of the foundations for morality and the like - he tends, in practice anyway, to be an antifoundationalist. This presents a problem - he gives the reader all these beautifully reasoned arguments for his idea of society, but always leaves the starting-point out. As such, it is hard to make much of his argument, if you may find yourself in disagreement with his elusive first principles.
Walzer argues that he's starting with "shared meanings," and just following out logically what that entails. In practice, this results in a social democratic, left-oriented society. Fine. But one feels a sleight-of-hand is being played. The "shared meanings" are rather vague. Moreover, "shared" by whom? While Walzer gives some discussion to this, the question lingers. Shared by all those in Western society? By those in only one country? By those in one class? By those on the editorial board of "Dissent" magazine? The reader may find that s/he is locked into the "logical result" of premises that were unknown in the beginning.
Having written all that, this is a very important book in political thoery/philosophy. If those are areas you are interested in, you should read this book. While well-argued, I find it less than compelling (for the reasons discussed above). I could be wrong. Read and decide for yourself.

Finally, Walzer has published a book that challenges the liberal theory of rationality, justice, and the capitalist markets. Although Walzer does have a few inconsistencies, his theory of the individual and the community dwarfs the liberal theory of Rawls.
An easy, excellent read.......2001-07-08
One of the major achievements of this is book just how well-written it is. Like one previous reviewer noted, Walzer is much more readable than authors like Nozick and Rawls (not to demean their incredible works). The strength of this book I have found is uneven. Some topics it treats incredibly and others are sorely wanting. Walzer's work is best at showing how justice is not just a political experience but also an economic, social, cultural, religious, and personal one; thus, this book is not just about politics but also about ethics. I recommend the book highly. It's an easy, memorable read for those interested in the topic therein.

Walzer, unlike other post war liberal theorists like Nozick and Rawls, returns political theory to the realm of practical political reality. His propsed theory creates a rational and thoughtful framework to confront many modern social issues.

Walzer's framework provides a powerful tool for non-philosophers to understand, and then speak-up directly and intelligently for equality and democracy. Nonetheless, the sphere-conceit tends mask and mystify the material bases for some of the situations Walzer uses it to address. This book is not a replacement for Mill, Rawls, Locke, Marx, Kant, and Arrow, but it is a huge span in the bridge between theories advocating equality and public policies that can secure it.

Using Seybold, he blackmails the CEO of Dayton-Anderson, a company contracted by the US Government to develop both of the top secret programs.
In the years leading up to the South China Sea War, the battle for secrets exacts a heavy price. But it is those secrets, combined with a misguided U.S. foreign policy, a crumbling U.S. infrastructure, and corrupt corporate officers, that end up contributing to the most significant U.S. naval conflict of the twenty-first century.

An easy book to get hooked on..........2005-09-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The book is basically two stories told in paralell. The first storyline focuses on a naval battle that takes place in the future. The second storyline discusses the events that led up to that encounter. The book uses a series of short chapters to get you up to speed in a moments notice. I thought the author used this method masterfully throughout the text to keep the reader engaged. I am not an avid reader and become bored easily with books. A friend recommended this title to me and I am glad that he did. If you like Tom Clancy novels, then I would recommend this book.

This book is an interesting, if not worrisome, look into the near future of both world trends and "what ifs"; two stories written on separate timelines, weaving, back and forth. The stories are linked by circumstance; one part of the book is about politics, politicians, corporate corruption, and abuse... like we hear too much of these days. The other is about national power, personal agendas, technology, miscalculation, and brinksmanship.
What happens in the storyline with regard to the politicians and the corporate characters seems to be a combination of selfishness, arrogance, disregard, and greed. As I got to know the players, I began to hope some would get their just desserts!
The technical and conflict writing is somewhat of a "Clanconian techno novel," that tends to keep the reader turning to the next page. A reader might draw some parallels to a book written in the twenties: The Great Pacific War, by Hector Bywater, that envisioned a possible naval war between Japan and the United States.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, some of the trends and issues that are raised are disturbing. The author draws on the events of this world and projects their effects (and consequences) into "next year." Overall, a very good read.
