Book Description
The making of devotional papercuts is a relatively little-known aspect of traditional Jewish folk art and culture. While many ritual objects treasured today as "Judaica" were crafted from expensive materials, often by gentile artisans executing paid commissions, even the poorest Jew could afford paper, pencil, and penknife with which to make a papercut as a deeply-felt, personal expression of faith. Many of these works are gems of unaffected artistic creation. More than any other form of Jewish art, the surviving old Jewish papercuts evoke the spirit and lore of the East-European shtetl and the North African mellah. By the mid-20th century, however, the venerable Jewish papercutting tradition had become another lost folk art.
This lavishly illustrated, full-color volume features many Jewish papercuts from Eastern and Central Europe reproduced here for the first time. These, and such works from Middle Eastern, North African, and North American Jewish communities incorporate an unparalleled wealth of Jewish symbols. Joseph and Yehudit Shadur's discussions of these configurations constitute a basic presentation of Jewish iconography of the last three centuries. The culmination of over twenty-five years of their searches and research on four continents, Traditional Jewish Papercuts is the definitive work on the subject.
The Shadurs' initial, profusely-illustrated, Jewish Papercuts: A History and Guide, published in 1994, won the annual National Jewish Book Council Award for the outstanding book in the visual arts. Their present work, Traditional Jewish Papercuts: An Inner World of Art and Symbol, offers readers much new material, insights, and interpretations, with detailed chapters on sources, typologies, and techniques. A special chapter deals with modern imitations and fraudulent works aimed at the collectors' market. An expanded, selective bibliography and an index are appended.

Book Description
Aspiring game developers need to know how to develop a game that will "really" get published. They need step-by-step instructions on how to conceptualize, design, and develop a saleable game, and that's what they'll find here. Written by the developer of Dead Reckoning and Sorcerer, this book teaches developers how to approach game design from the product design viewpoint. Instead of creating a game and then trying to get it published, they'll learn how to look at their game from the publisher and consumer perspective first. What does a game need to make it publishable? What will make it enticing to the target audience? All of these questions will be answered beginning with the brain storming, market research, and team building stages and then moving to the design, creation, and documentation phases. Plus all of the tools needed to create a game are included on the CD.

Mixed Bag; Uneven Coverage.......2003-08-12
This is a typical Charles River Media title: It promises a lot upfront (starting with the title), but goes only so far in delivering it.
In particular, it reads like a glorified (if incomplete) manual for 'Genesis 3D,' a free, no-programming game development engine for developing Quake-like games - with a few chapters toward the end about the possibilities of another prototyping tool called 'Reality Factory,' a supposed Genesis 3D enhancement (again free).
The good stuff, however, is in the beginning of the book: the game development (business) process, detailed and put as it is. I liked that, and feel THAT, if nothing else, should be the basis for buying this book. Even the Appendices are moderately useful (Paul Steed's article on Low-poly tricks, anyone?).
It's pretty much a mixed bag, really, when seen as a whole: you like some parts, but are left wanting for more in the 'actual' game development process. The author walks you through the creation of your first level, and you feel - there *could* be more; you *want* to have more; and there *should* have been more. But after reading through the first half about the do's and don'ts of the gaming business, you expect a fairly even treatment toward actually "designing" a complete, playable and likeable (if basic) game that "could" sell, perhaps at the bargain store down the road... That, unfortunately, just isn't there. Just, just isn't there. (Nope, it ain't). Create the first level, look at the features of the given game engines, check these coupla websites, resources, modeling tools, what's on the CD, there's more to come, etc., and that's it, end of story... Good beginning, directionless middle, disappointing end; a typical Charles River Media title from the year 2001. Beginners might benefit from knowing how easy it to develop a game, yet how hard it is to sell it for some real money. Professionals (even semi-professionals), however - I don't think they'd be much interested beyond the business half.
Recommendation: This really is a good book and a bad book rolled into one. A sort of 2 1/2 stars book (though I gave it 3). But if you really want to purchase it despite its deficiencies, you might want to look at getting "Game Programming: All In One" by Bruno Miguel Texeira de Sousa too, which, I feel, covers the technical ("necessary") side of game development in much greater detail than Mr. Ahearn's effort here. In a way, it even complements the information in the latter, and may justify purchasing it for its tips-n-advice value, if nothing else.
A must have for any newbie Game Developer.......2001-03-21
At first I only bought this book as reference material for the world of game design, however, the provides far more valuable information than how to make a design document. The book gives any new developer/designer an insight as to the whole process of producing games. It also shows how to produce a complete game proposal starting with a conver letter and ending with budgets and shcedules.
A MUST have as far as I am concerned.

How to determine the ROI of your organization's human capital.......2006-10-31
I recently re-read this book and have even higher regard for it now than I did I when I first read it soon after it was published in 2001. Becker and Huselid later co-authored The Workforce Scorecard with Richard W. Beatty. With rigor and eloquence, they examine three separate but related challenges: Perspective (with an emphasis on differentiation), Metrics (and their relationship to strategy execution), and Execution (which holds senior executives and line managers accountable for workforce success). They suggest that all organizations which successfully meet these three challenges (i.e. those which "do it right") have these six characteristics in common:
1. HR professionals spend less time on employee performance than they did five years ago
2. The relationship between workforce success and strategy implementation defines the ROI of new HR initiatives.
3. Creating a shared mind-set is not taken for granted.
4. The HR function has a staffing structure that effectively balances the tension between being a strategic partner and delivering efficient and effective HR services.
5. Strategic workforce measures are "owned" and coordinated by a single individual or task force.
6. Senior executives, line managers, and HR professionals consider the results of the measurement system worth the implementation effort.
Although it may seem to some who read this brief commentary that will be of substantial value only to large organizations, I hasten to reassure them that, after appropriate modifications, what Huselid, Becker, and Beatty recommend in The Workforce Scorecard can help any organization (regardless of size or nature) to improve the quality of their strategy execution by developing the right perspective on the contributions of its workforce to its success, and, by developing the right execution strategy to ensure that its managers are ready, willing, and able to use workforce metrics to drive business success.
It is important to keep these points in mind when reading The HR Scorecard and I strongly recommend that, if possible, The Workforce Scorecard be read in combination with it, preferably but not necessarily afterward.
Robert Kaplan and David Norton wrote three articles for Harvard Business Review ("The Balanced Scorecard," "Putting the Scorecard to Work," and "Using the Balanced Scorecard as a Strategic Management System") which led to a series of books in which their insights were developed in even greater depth. According to Norton who wrote the introduction to The HR Scorecard, in the New Economy, human capital is the foundation of value creation and that up to 85% of an organization's value is based on intangible assets. "This presents an interesting dilemma: The asset which is most important is the least understood, least prone to measurement, and, hence least susceptible to management." He goes on to commend the co-authors of The HR Scorecard for three specific contributions: their development of causal models which illustrate the relationship of HR value drivers with business outcomes and thereby take the Balanced Scorecard to the next level of sophistication; their research on the drivers of high-performance organizations to provide a framework to decision-makers with which to formulate and implement strategies for human capital growth; and finally, their insights into the competencies required by HR professionals, competencies which can enabler an organization to deliver on the promise of its measurement system.
In essence, the co-authors of The HR Scorecard identify and explain linkages - indeed the interdependence -- between and among people, strategy, and performance. Only by understanding these linkages and their independence can decision-makers in any organization (regardless of size or nature) accurately measure the nature, value, and impact of human capital on the bottom line.
Moreover, decision-makers can then make much more accurate measurement of each individual in terms of the value she or he adds to the organization and, more importantly, to those on whom that organization depends for revenue. Customers who purchase products, of course, and clients who purchase services but also members who purchase members and benefactors to contribute donations.
Here are two other substantial benefits of establishing and then maintaining a HR scorecard:
1. It can guide and inform hiring decisions which ensure that an organization increases its human capital with those to add new value
2. It can also guide and inform decisions concerning the allocation of tangible resources, especially when there are unexpected major developments (either threatening or promising) in the given organization's competitive marketplace.
When concluding their brilliant volume, the authors observe that while much of the work of an HR scorecard is technical, the delivery of the Scorecard is personal. "It requires that HR professionals design to make a difference, align their work to business strategy, apply the science of research to the art of HR, and commit to learning from constant experimentation. When you create the HR Scorecard, using the approach we describe, you are actually [begin italics] linking HR to firm performance [end italics]. But you will also develop a new perspective on your HR function, practices, and professional development. In measurement terms, the benefits will far outweigh the costs."
I presume to add two concluding suggestions of my own. First, that HR professionals use the Scorecard initially to measure their own performance so they can determine how, as individual executives, they can add greater value to their organization. Next, that all others in senior management also read this book as well as The Workplace Scorecard to increase their own understanding of (a) how and why to link people, strategy, and performance enterprise-wide and (b) how to manage human capital much more effectively (also enterprise-wide) when executing strategy.
A Wealth of Ideas.......2006-05-28
If you're in HR and need to establish measures for the value you add, this book contains a huge array of options for measurement. As a resource for "brainstorming" it's unparalleled.
Where the book breaks down is focus. As Jerry McAdams says, measure many things but reward a few. If HR were honestly to establish and maintain 100 measurements, how could even an airline pilot monitor that many gauges on the the dashboard?
It would have been much better if the authors had said, "These are the half-dozen key, even 'universal' measures of HR value-added." As it is, the reader has to wade through the enormous number of options furnished and hope that they've gotten it right.
Worse yet: with all these measures, HR takes "the easy way out" and suboptimizes, picking only those measures which make HR look good. If measures of self-aggrandizement is all we've accomplished, we've not helped our businesses at all.
We All need it.......2006-05-16
This book should be read by all HR Professionals.
I wont waste your time in reading the review, just order it, and do not hesitate.
I read it twice
This book is rapidly becoming an industry best practice framework.......2006-02-28
It has always been difficult to capture the impact of Human Resources on the company's performance. Unfortunately, most of the measures in use currently do not capture the HR contributions to a company's success. The authors argue that anew approach is necessary. One that captures the vital role that HR plays along with providing real measures that can show what contributions HR is making to the company's success.
This new approach involves reversing the traditional bottom-up method with a more comprehensive top-down approach. The implementation of strategy is the key. The authors submit that a company must develop an assessment system that measures HR contribution to the company's strategies and profitability. The authors developed a seven-step approach to implementing HR's strategic role:
Step 1: Clearly define business strategy
Step 2: Build a business case for HR as a strategic asset
Step 3: Create a strategy map
Step 4: Identify HR deliverables within the strategy map
Step 5: Align HR architecture with HR deliverables
Step 6: Design the strategic HR measurement system
Step 7: Implement management by measurement
In order to create the HR scorecard a company must measure: HR: deliverables, policies, processes, practices, system alignment, and efficiency. This represents one-part of the HR scorecard. Developing the scorecard is one part, implementing the scorecard is the other part. The authors recommend seven guidelines for implementing a scorecard:
· Lead Change
· Create a shared need
· Shape a vision
· Mobilize commitment
· Build enabling systems
· Monitor and demonstrate progress
· Make it last
Workforce Score card.......2006-02-14
The book has built on the key philosophy underlying the earlier book, The HR Scorecard: Linking People, Strategy, and Performance by Brian Becker, Mark Huselid, and Dave Ulrich, which was written with a view to align human resource activities with business strategy. The present book is a follow up of that one. In nutshell, it seeks to introduce a metric system that deals with behaviours, competencies and mindsets and culture necessary for workforce success, as also the way it influences the organizational performance.
The book helps differentiate workforce into various categories which necessitates reliable standards and measures. Developing these will help employees know as to what is expected of them.
The book is undoubtedly a fine contribution towards improving the effectiveness of operations and other managers; it will provide them potent ideas for better delivery of results. It even has the potential of raising the stature of the discipline of strategic HRM. It is well known that HR is presently in an hour of crisis as it has been subjected to tremendous pressure for outsourcing of its activities. The book's hallmark lies in its practical utility to managers. It offers specific guidelines for ensuring that effective measures are identified, accepted and used. The HR managers are bound to give regards for the metrics that have been suggested in this book. It will become one of the widely-read, used and referenced books in the time to come. The book is free from any jargon; yet its conceptualization is powerful. The central line of reasoning flows very well throughout the text. The illustrations and tables are extremely interesting. The book should be an essential reading for line as well as HR managers as they are jointly responsible for executing strategy. All those who are striving to build high-performance organizations must read this book.

Book Description
"You read her to thrall in her striking ability to behold great vistas through a pinhole . . . in a language that is always concrete and vital." (The New York Times)
"Noonan possesses an astonishingly deft touch for making the political process come alive." (USA Today)
It is twenty yearsa full generationsince Ronald Reagan first walked into the White House and ignited a revolution. From the beginning, he enjoyed the American people's affection but now, as he approaches the end of his life, he has received what he deserved even more: their deep respect.
What was the wellspring of his greatness? Peggy Noonan, bestselling author of the classic Reagan-era memoir What I Saw at the Revolution, former speechwriter, and now a columnist and contributing editor for The Wall Street Journal, argues that the secret of Reagan's success was no secret at all. It was his characterhis courage, his kindness, his persistence, his honesty, and his almost heroic patience in the face of setbacksthat was the most important element of his success.
The one thing a man must bring into the White House with him if he is to succeed, Noonan contends, is a character that people come to recognize as high, sturdy, and reliable.
Noonan, renowned for her special insight into Ronald Reagan's history and personality, brings her own reflections on Reagan to bear in When Character Was King and discloses never-before-told stories from the former president's family, friends, and White House colleagues to reveal the true nature of a man even his opponents now view as a maker of big history.
Marked by incisive wit and elegant prose, When Character Was King will enlighten and move readers.

A fly on the wall account of Ronald Reagan .......2007-09-19
This book is not a be all end all historical biography. This book is about short stories that reflect on what type of person Ronald Reagan was.
My favorite story was about this little old lady from Indiana. She had contributed one dollar a month to the Republican party for 50 years. Well the White House heard this and sent her an invitation to meet with the President. She took a train to Washington D.C. went up to the gate only to find out that the invitation said RSVP which she overlooked. To her horror the guard at the gate said that she would not be admitted. They asked her if she was going to be in town for a few days, she was, and they tried to do what they could. Life in the White House was incredibly busy but during this time it was especially so. The Attorney General had resigned the day before and Libya was behind a bombing. As a consolation prize the decided to give her an all access pass of the White House. When they got to the Oval Office Generals Staff and other individuals were frequently in and out of the room. When the door opened Reagan who was on the phone saw her from the corner of his eye. When the conversation ended Reagan said "Delores get in here its those dang computers again if i would have know you were coming i would have gone and get you myself. Just think of it from her perspective here is the most powerful man in the world dropped everything during a busy day to talk with a little old lady from Indiana for 30 or 40 minutes. That shows the compassion and humanity of Ronald Reagan
Bring Back Character.......2007-07-13
I absolutely loved this book and Peggy Noonan is an excellent writer. For me the book was part historical part biography. I think my respect for Ronald Reagan was re-ignited by Noonan's expressive and dead on descriptions of Dutch. I remember folks saying, and still do, that he was stupid but someone with this much love for his country and compassion for his fellow humans is in now way stupid. This is a must read for fans of Reagan and those who still appreciate something called character.
One of top five greatest presidents in history........2007-04-16
Washington, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan - best presidents in American history. Peggy Noonan is an extraordinary writer with such a gifted ability to uplift.
What an incredible honor for her to have served with Reagan.
Just What I Expected: A Myth about a president who's bad ideas continue to hurt America.......2007-01-14
This book was well written. But for the most part it is like any other book written about Regan, propaganda. Ronald Regan was probably a great guy to know personally but he was not in my opinion a very good president. He continually gave huge tax cuts to the rich while pushing Americas less fortunate futher and further into poverty. He belived, if you read his writings and listen to his speeches, that it was the fault of the poor and middle class for being poor and middle class. I suggest that any one who reads this book also read Man Of the House by Tip O'Neil to get the other side of the story. To me after reading this biography I was more disappointed in Regan than anything. To go from living in a struggling family that was just able to make ends meet to becoming a rich movie star and later on govenor and president he quiclky forgot what it was like to be a working person in America to day. People often say that he the only person to push the fall of the U.S.S.R. this too is untrue. Communist systems just do not work the U.S.S.R. was going to fall anyways. Plus there were many people working in Europe for the U.S.S.R.'s fall i.e. John Paul II and Margret Thatcher. So in the end was Regan a respectable man. YES! Was he the best person to be leader of the free wrold. Probably not.
Excellent book about best President America has produced.......2006-12-09
When I use to read the reviews on books like this one by those who are leftist I really could not understand the rage and blindness that they contain. If you look at the negative ratings and the rants about this book it is apparent that these individuals really can't help it. It is almost like the story of Moses and the Pharoah, where God says that He "hardened Pharoah's heart." It's not a matter that the left won't be decent and civilized, it's that they can't. If you read the negative one star ratings about this book you will understand what I mean.
This book is nothing less then excellent. Peggy Noonan is a fine writer and I just finished her book on John Paul II. Reagan was quite frankly the best President that this country has produced. Noonan really helps us to understand the man. How he grew up, what his relationship was with his father and how he wound up in politics. This is an important book because there are so many wannabe writers out there that take every chance to smear a good man like Reagan because of their love for either a buck or to satisfy some psychological deformity. Unfortunately it is very in vogue these days by liberals to say the most outrageous things they can muster. The more they rant the more they believe people will listen to their insanity. The sad thing is that it is usually true. The liberals have alot of hate and alot of energy and they don't let up for a second. Especially when it comes to decency. Reagan was good and decent and so is this book, so the left has got their work cut out for them. They have to convince alot of people that good people are bad and evil people are good.
Aside from my soapbox, buy the book. It is good and Peggy Noonan is a great writer. The book is objective and decent. The book gave me a deeper understanding of the fact that people who had tough younger lives can and do turn out to be great leaders and good people like Ronald Reagan did.

Book Description
Peter Singer identifies the central vision that unifies Marx's thought, enabling us to grasp Marx's views as a whole. He sees him as a philosopher primarily concerned with human freedom, rather than as an economist or a social scientist. He explains alienation, historical materialism, the economic theory of Capital, and Marx's ideas of communism, in plain English, and concludes with an assessment of Marx's legacy.

Publisher Notes:.......2006-10-10
The Past Masters Series is a concise, lucid , aythoritative introduction to the thought of leading intellectual figures of the past whose ideas still influence the way we think today. ... sees Marx as a philosopher, rather than as an economist or social scientis. ' an admirably balanced portrait of the man and his achievement' says Philip Toynbee, Observer.
not bad, but not good.......2006-02-10
Very little of the text is devoted to analyzing Marx's most important work. For example, a total of one chapter (~30 pages) is devoted to Das Kapital, Marx's seminal work.
On the other hand, excessive attention is paid to unimportant aspects of Marx. For example, most of the book is spent analyzing Marx's philosophical background, his obscure earlier works, his philosophical predecessors (Hegel & Feuerbach), and the effects of his doctrines. The chapter devoted to Singer's mediocre economic analysis is as long as the chapter devoted to Das Kapital!
Although the book has some good material, that good material constitutes only ~30 pages.
An easy to follow introduction.......2005-04-13
I am doing an MA in political science and my professor screwed his nose up a bit when I showed him this, because Singer is not a name that one associates with Marxism. I bought it because I liked his anthology on Ethics so much. I must say that I don't agree with some of the conclusions that Singer draws in his assessment of Marxism at the end of the book, but his strength is his ability to write at a level that is easy to understand. He avoids jargon where possible and that in itself takes a lot of the mystery out of this stuff. I recommend this book as a good place to start when looking at Marx.
A Little TOO Short.......2005-02-28
I felt the later chapters of this book were well developed, but the first few chapters on how Marx developed his philosophy from Hegel's left me with more questions than answers. Overall, the book provides are decent foundation on which to critique Marx as a philosopher, social scientist, economist, etc. Singer brings up many common objections to Marxist thought, but he also presents Marx's ideas in a non-bias way and gives credit where he sees credit is due. I found the biography of Marx to be interesting along with the subtleties of his relationship with Engels. But in the end, I wish this book had been a little more detailed, especially with regards to Marx's early works and philosophy.
An almost ideal introduction to the subject........2003-08-22
Peter Singer's "Marx: A Very Short Introduction" is a superbly lucid and concise introduction to the subject of Marx and Marxism. Assuming the reader has no background in Marx's thought, Singer covers most of the important issues of Marxism and then assesses Marx's achievements and shortcomings in a refreshingly balanced manner.
What makes this book such a valuable introduction is Singer's clear understanding of what lies at the heart of Marxism: the issue of human freedom. Too many works on Marxism reduce it to a merely economic philosophy, which has the destruction of capitalism (and subsequent liberation of the world's workers) as its end. This is a gross misrepresentation of Marx's thought. Marx saw the destruction of capitalism and the establishment of a classless society as means toward the true end which he sought: the liberation of humanity from oppression and exploitation and a return to our true nature as creative, self-actualizing beings rather than mere laboring appendages to an economic machine. Marx envisioned a world in which humanity toiled with its individual and universal fulfillment as the goal, rather than a world in which a few grow rich while the many dig ditches or work in Asian sweatshops for Nike. Freedom, true freedom, was the purpose behind Marx's work and also his life.
I highly recommend this book as a serious, thorough, and fair introduction to this complex subject. Apart from Terry Eagleton's "Marx," there is no better guide than this.

Book Description
The Handbook of Australian, New Zealand and Antarctic Birds (HANZAB) is one of the most exciting and significant projects in Australian ornithology today. Providing an up-to-date, comprehensive, and accurate synthesis of our knowledge of all the birds that occur in the region, HANZAB continues a long tradition of authoritative and exciting ornithological publications, that began with Gould's Handbook of the Birds of Australia (1865) and was continued by Mathews, Buller and Oliver. It will have an enormous impact on the direction of future research and the conservation of Australasian and Antarctic birds, as much by showing what we don't know as by summarizing what we do. Complementing the 196 species detailed in the highly acclaimed first volume, Volume Two deals with 119 of the 900 birds recorded in Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica, the Antarctic and subantarctic islands, the external territories of Cocos-Keeling, Christmas, Lord Howe, Norfolk, Kermadec, and Chatham Islands, and the islands and reefs of the Coral Sea. The information is presented in sections: Field Identification, Habitat, Distribution and Population, Movements, Food, Social Organization, Social Behaviour, Voice, Breeding, and Plumages and related matters, and each account concludes with a full list of references. The accounts also include black-and-white illustrations of behavioural postures and plumage features, maps showing breeding and non-breeding distribution, sonagrams of calls and songs, diagrams of timing of breeding and moulting, and 70 colour plates, specially painted for HANZAB by Jeff Davies.

Information to satisfy the birder and the biologist.......1999-03-25
This slim volume contains a wealth of information about and stunning photographs of the Eurasian Lapwing, Vanellus vanellus, also called the Green Plover. It is written in a conversational manner and well-organized. The birder, the biologist, the ecologist, and the agriculturalist can quickly find the information they seek. There are good range maps and a short list of references for further reading. It is one in a series from Shire Natural History.
