"Borrow as much as you can for as long as you!".......2007-09-10
As I said in another review of another Real Estate Foreclosure book, since all I've done is read books about buying, renovating and selling foreclosed or rehabbed property, I don't yet know, what I don't know. With that in mind, I think Making Money... was very informative. The chapter pertaining to the proper screening of potential renters was especially enlightening. The book is written more from and economic point of view which gives it an optimistic edge. Real Estate is a finite commodity, and with current migrational trends the future looks good for industrious investors. Although I thought the information was delivered from the view of a seaoned investor, there were grammatical errors throughout; thus my conservative rating; nevertheless, I recommend this book for those who may be interested in Real Estate investment.

Product Description
The warlocks and ghosts of fantasy film haunt our popular culture, but the genre has too long been ignored by critics. This comprehensive critical survey of fantasy cinema demonstrates that the fantasy genre amounts to more than escapism. Through a meticulously researched analysis of over a century of fantasy picturesfrom the seminal work of Georges Méliès to Peter Jacksons recent tours of Middleearththe work identifies narrative strategies and their recurring components and studies patterns of challenge and return, setting and character. First addressing the difficult task of defining the genre, the work examines fantasy as a cultural force in both film and literature and explores its relation to science fiction, horror, and fairy tales. Fantasys development is traced from the first days of film, with emphasis on how the evolving genre reflected such events as economic depression and war. Also considered is fantasys expression of politics, as either the subject of satire or fuel for the fires of propaganda. Discussion ventures into the subgenres, from stories of invented lands inhabited by fantastic creatures to magical adventures set in the familiar world, and addresses clashes between fantasy and faith, such as the religious opposition to the Harry Potter phenomenon. From the money-making classics to little-known arthouse films, this richly illustrated work covers every aspect of fantasy film.

The Osho Transformation Tarot: Insights and Parables for Renewal in Everyday Life
ASIN: 0760745846 |
Book Description
We all carry within ourselves the potential to become a Buddha in our own right. This beautiful package, featuring 53 spectacular cards, mind-expanding sutras, and an accompanying guide are the keys to unlocking that power. They aid the process of awakening, of giving meaning and significance to our lives. Each gorgeous card features a photograph of a Buddha statue, a short quotation from the book known as the Dhammapada, and commentary on the sutra. Choose a card at the beginning of each week, and keep it with you always to refer to during the day to absorb its lessons. First, enjoy the words as poetry and allow them to evoke an intuitive, emotional response; with the help of the corresponding section in the book, the meaning will sink in. The enlightening sutras include: He Watches, He Is Clear; How Can You Quarrel?; Only Love Dispels Hate; Beyond Judgments; Neither Praise Nor Blame; Conquer Yourself; Beyond Sorrow; Awake Forever; and The Shining Way.

Deep and profound deck for self-exploration.......2007-09-23
This very beautiful and aesthetic set of cards represents an important meeting between two spiritual giants Buddha and Osho, seperated by 2.500 years on one level, but united on another level in the eternal Now. Each card is decorated with a picture related to buddhism: the head of a statue, a temple and the like, and contains a quote from the profound buddhist scripture The Dhammapada and Osho's equally profound comments.
The accompanying booklet deepens the quotes and give suggestions on how to work with the cards and their insights in your everyday life.
This deck of cards can transform your life!
A mind beyond judgements watches and understands........2006-11-11
It is what it is. The deck holds true to it's title and intent. It is the "Buddha Discovery Deck. 53 Sutras and meditation cards to create a silent space within". I have usesd it as it instructed me and I really like it. I take a card per week and I use it as a Gatha and I find lessons in it bring about great equinimity.
Noting from what others have written, they seem to expected more. I think someone who is a serious student of Buddhism, may find it disappointing, because they are expecting something along their traditional training. I am a Westerner and have not had traditional Buddist training.
My recommendation, is to be open to what is there. If you are from a traditional Buddhist background, then open your mind to a different approach.
May you all be well.
Nothing to do with Buddhism.......2005-08-09
Buddhism is founded on the teachings of the Buddha or "Enlightened One". He taught that there are 4 noble truths to Buddhism. These are: There is suffering; The source of suffering is desire; There is cessation to suffering, And that cessation is achieved through an adherence to the Eightfold Path. The Eightfold Path is a path of virtue, mental cultivation, and wisdom.
I quoted the above from my Let's Go guidebook. Nowhere within this set will you learn about Buddha's life or his teachings. That includes the foundation of Buddhism that I included above. The Sutra's are correct however the interpretations stray from most of Buddha's teachings.
If you want to get the author's view of Buddhism here it is: Stare at Buddha images and let your mind go blank. Buddhism is meditation and anyone can become a Buddha.
That has got to be the most flawed and simplistic view of a such a great religion/philosophy that I have ever heard.
I was highly disappointed after purchasing this set. I wanted to learn about the Buddhist beliefs because that is what life is centered around in Thailand, my home for the next 2 years. As I just demonstrated my guidebook does a much better job of accurately explaining Buddhist beliefs.
This set preaches a very hateful message that has nothing to do with the Buddhism that I have learned about. It is very critical of any religious beliefs outside of Buddhism. True Buddhism is very inclusive and allows people of all faiths to incorporate the teachings of the Buddha.
Going from my experiences living in Thailand so far I have found virtually no value to what is taught in this set. We have had Buddhist Monks come and speak to us on Buddhism and what they said differed from this set greatly. Also readings of other texts and discussions with devout and less than devout Buddhists shared nothing with what this author presents.
BEAUTIFULLY INSPIRATIONAL.......2005-02-17
I love to use this deck - I draw a card to be my 'meditation'
for the week. Each card has a nice picture and a short
inspirational phrase on the front. Then, on the back of the
card is expanded text if I want more clarification on the
inspirational phrase. And if I want more, there is a longer
text for each card within the book. I don't see the book as
a text to be read cover to cover, but rather as a support for
the deck of cards. Enjoy this for years, and it makes a
wonderful gift for anyone interested in Buddha, Osho,
enlightenment, peace, meditation and/or self-realization.
Bad introduction.......2004-05-18
The cards are nice but the first 34 pages which include the introduction, history of the Buddha and the Sutras leave much to be desired. I'm not arguing with what the author is saying, it is his method of delivery that I found to be a turn off. It approached pontification and reminded me of the religious dogma that is blindly accepted by too any in our prejudiced society. After reading a few pages, I put the book down very disappointed. I decided to give it another try because I didn't want to waste an opportunity to learn something but couldn't get through it. I would not recommend this book to anyone. I wouldn't even give it away, I guess it will sit on my shelf until I can find some way to use the cards.

Lots of ideas.......2007-07-20
Good book, you should be able to pick up at least 3-6 ideas that will work for your business.
Buy the condensed Version.......2007-04-11
its been a LONG while since I had a Guerilla marketing book so but both Guerrilla marketing and this one.
Save yourself some cash-just get this one. They are basically teh SAME book, except this one leaves out the anecdotes and just gives you the facts. If you have both and you can compare them and they are word for word the same....
Crazy...but I guess thats one way to make money = rehash and remarket..........
Good book but nothing new here.......2007-01-19
It's worth reading to remind us of things we may already know.
Another god GM book.......2007-01-09
This is more good stuff by Jay. He's expounding on his 100 GM Weapons, a list of which is available at his website and in some of his other materials. Some of it is just a re-hash of the other GM books, but some is new and can be put into practice immediately and for no $$$ at all. A good refresher if you're in a slump.
Very Informative and worth the wait.......2006-03-17
I was very surprised to learn that there are many free ways to promote your business online. This is a must have resource for all business owners to use. I would recommend this book to all of my friends.
Book Description
“It’s not that I don’t like people,” writes Maureen Corrigan in her introduction to Leave Me Alone, I’m Reading. “It’s just that there always comes a moment when I’m in the company of others—even my nearest and dearest—when I’d rather be reading a book.” In this delightful memoir, Corrigan reveals which books and authors have shaped her own life—from classic works of English literature to hard-boiled detective novels, and everything in between. And in her explorations of the heroes and heroines throughout literary history, Corrigan’s love for a good story shines.
Customer Reviews:
Unreadable!.......2007-09-30
I am a nobody in the rarified atmosphere of Corrigan's literary world.
I can say I have enjoyed her book comments on "Fresh Air," but I did not enjoy this book. I bought this book expecting something quite different.
It turned out to be either some sort of a justification for Ms Corrigan's
feminism, or a cleverly couched confession that she is barren and cannot conceive? I don't know why she would write such a book. It left me feeling voyeristic and depressed.
I am sorry Ms C that I did not like your book.
I am sad that yet another of my heroines has opened her own veins in a gesture of self destruction.
At least we do share an affection for heroines.
Leave Me Along, I'm Reading is a great surprise.......2007-07-20
I just finished reading this book and, as an avid reader all my life, I was able to relate to many of Maureen's experiences. She remembers and comments on the books she was reading at different times of her life. She is funny and smart and introspective and a very welcoming writer. She has a great list at the back of the book of her favorite books by category. I plan to pick some gems from her list for future reading.
That Thing about Thanking the Waitress.......2007-05-20
I don't have much to add about the book itself -- as a total bookworm, I enjoyed it for all the reasons already noted by those who also enjoyed it (or parts of it). The only place I thought Corrigan went wrong was in those two paragraphs discussing those who scrupulously thank anyone who's serving them and those who don't even acknowledge "the help." That fact is that it's not about coming from a blue- or pink-collar background, where, as a child, Corrigan tells us, one is "taught to feel gratitude for any service done" for you vs. being a person who oozes privilege. That's a false distinction and an unnecessary stretch for an explanation of the phenomemon she describes. Remember Occam's razor. It's simply about people who were taught (or have otherwise acquired) manners vs. people who were/have not.
Not quite what I expected .......2007-05-11
Ms. Corrigan's discussions on Detective Novels, and Female Adventure tales made me want to run out and get any book I can find in these genres. And when she speaks of her family (especially her father) one can feel the passion and sincerity in her words. But her writing is so unsentimental and irritatingly fair that I was like, "When will it all be over?" She uses phrases like "oozing priviledge," something that should make any mildly successful person feel guilty. She doesn't like it when people don't say thank you to waiters and waitresses, especially people with the aforementioned "oozing priviledge." But if you can get through this and similar baby boomer gooble-de-gook you will find she has written an intelligent book about books. (I'd like to tell Ms. Corrigan that I ,who am a baby boomer myself at 51, know working class people who are not oozing with priviledge who doesn't say thank you to waitresses either). She has such interesting incites into literary works, both old and new, that I wish she had spent more time in this area. When I finished reading the book I had the dual feeling that everything had been said, yet nothing had been said. This ambiguity persists through out the book, whenever she hints at her politcal leanings, that is.
A Book on Reading That's Worth Reading!.......2007-04-27
I'll read every word on a cereal box, if that's all there is to read when I sit at the kitchen table. Reading has marked my life, my growth and my relationships. To my delight, Maureen Corrigan is the same kind of obessive reader! It is always nice to discover others cut from the same cloth. I really felt like this book was as much about her as a reader as it was about the books that she read. So many books on reading are entirely too theoretical or scholarly, but LEAVE ME ALONE is friendly, accessible, touchable. And thought-provoking.
As an Engligh Literature major who thought of persuing graduate studies, I was also very riveted by her discussion of her years as a graduate student and professor, and how her reading tastes and preferences affected her advancement in that arena. I don't know if those who did not try to study literature within the canon-based structure of the universities will enjoy that chapter as much -- it was long. But it was my personal favorite.
Overall, LEAVE ME ALONE reads like a conversation with a kindred spirit. If you are interested in the way that being a reader is connected with what kind of person you are, or will be, I really think you'd enjoy this book.
Book Description
Naval Combat Demolition Units (NCDUs) and Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs), both little-known predecessors of the Navy SEALs, played a crucial role in the Pacific and European theaters during World War II. As the vanguard for amphibious assaults, they were tasked with beach reconnaissance, depth sounding, and clearing obstacles, mines, and unexploded ordnance so the troops could land---often while exposed to enemy fire. Their work was as hazardous as it was essential.
THE WATER IS NEVER COLD is based on painstaking archival research and interviews with veterans of the NCDUs and the UDTs, plus the people who influenced their development---the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Amphibious Scouts and Raiders, among others. O'Dell details the historical precedents that influenced the teams, as well as their innovation and experimentation with tactics, methods, and equipment. The narrative follows the NCDUs and the UDTs from their grueling training regimen through several of their key combat missions during the war. If not for the skillful work of these brave men, the successful landings at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Normandy, and other critical battlefields might have been impossible.

Men among Men.......2002-04-08
I had the honor of knowing one of the men in the book. I grew up with his sons and he treated me like I was one of his own. He never spoke of his service. He never watched a war movie when it came on the television; he either changed the channel or shut the set off. He was a quiet man.
These were real men. The description of the training and missions is full of detail that brings the story to life. It helped me understand some things about a man who I spent a lot of time around. It explained some of the stories my Dad told me about when they both worked in a logging camp in Oregon.
The stories of the men in this book will make you appreciate the freedom you have today and the sacrifices they made over 50 years ago. They risked a lot for us and we owe it to them to learn about their sacrifice.
It's All Here.......2001-02-12
The Navy SEALS are among the most heroic of all the brave men throughout military history. If you have an interest in where they came from, this is where you want to be. O'Dell has clearly done his homework. His depth of research is impressive, in both archival material and in interviews. O'Dell brings passion and intensity to his writing. It's all here. Enjoy.

Book Description
This book demonstrates that people's basic values and beliefs are changing, in ways that affect their political, sexual, economic, and religious behavior. These changes are roughly predictable because they can be interpreted on the basis of a revised version of modernization theory presented here. Drawing on a massive body of evidence from societies containing 85% of the world's population, the authors demonstrate that modernization is a process of human development, in which economic development triggers cultural changes that make individual autonomy, gender equality, and democracy increasingly likely.

A Scientific Reexamination of Modernization.......2006-01-27
This is a major study by any standard. It presents both a grand synthesis and a great depth of hard data to back it up, and I can see nothing that would cast it in serious doubt. Inglehart and Welzel make a very strong case that for the most part socioeconomic conditions drive popular values and that these values in turn drive the institutions of government. If you take a subsistence agricultural society and industrialize it then, after a time, its people will turn away from a sense of impotence in the face of divine forces toward a confidence in society's potential to master nature and itself. If their government already had elements of democracy then they will probably embrace more democratization, based in mass parties and movements. But if they lack a democratic tradition they may well turn to the apparent strength and security of mass totalitarian government.
Moreover, if this industrial society becomes rich enough and sophisticated enough to move into an era of postindustrialism - an era in which industry produces more and more wealth with less and less direct labor and more and more people find secure and well-paid work in directing and facilitating industry through skilled mental labor - further values changes will come, but in a different direction. These postindustrial humans will grow suspicious and even hostile toward authority and relatively more concerned about freedom for themselves and others than further enrichment. This, in turn, will bring overthrow of any totalitarian institutions and both a broadening and deepening of democracy and popular commitment to democracy. But it will be democracy of autonomous individuals rather than disciplined masses.
While socioeconomic changes are strongly correlated with movements of values in particular directions, the starting point - the basic values of the particular culture - continues to matter for as long as anyone has so far measured. Values associated with religion in particular tend to persist, even if formal mass religious institutions fade. Hopes and fears of spreading "westernization" or "Americanization" are unfounded. Democracy and freedom are not western or American exports - they arise anew wherever socioeconomic conditions and values favor them, always rooted in the local society.
But there is no "end of history" here. The process can work equally well in reverse and serious regression in socioeconomic conditions can bring dark consequences for values and political institutions.
All this is not simply theory, buttressed perhaps by a sprinkling of selective historical analysis. These processes have been observed and statistically measured in a great many societies, worldwide, over the past 15 years and more. There is good evidence that the flow of cause is from economics to social values to politics, and not much if at all in the other direction. And while we lack much information for periods before 1980, what we do know suggests that these processes have operated in pretty much the same way for many decades, and even longer. In short, this seems to be something that is deeply embedded in the nature of human society.
I have a much longer and more detailed review (much more than will fit here) on my Web site at analysis.williamdoneil.com
