Book Description
The works of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari have had an impact far beyond philosophy. A Shock to Thought brings together a collection of excellent essays that explore the implications of Deleuze and Guattari's philosophy of expression in a number of contemporary contexts: beauty vs. modernism, reflection to postmodernism, sensation and politics, the conditions of emergence, and the virtual in politics, poetry, music and digital culture. The volume also contains an interview with Guattari which clearly restates the "aesthetic paradigm."
Customer Reviews:
"Thought does not reflect the real - it is the real".......2007-07-27
This collection of essays, edited by Brian Massumi, is an impressive exploration of the implication of Deleuze-Guattarian thought for the philosophy of communication. True, as Massumi notes in his excellent introduction, 'communication' is a fraught and inconsistently used term in their work. But insofar as that term gestures at the intersection of thought/expression/sense/sensation/life, then it better than any other expresses the book's collective endeavor. While I have not read all of the pieces as yet, the half dozen or so I've managed to get to thus far are all excellent.

Jess acknowledged me!.......2004-03-14
No matter one's area of expertise - there is always someone better. I thought I was expert on Sherlock Holmes. Jess makes me look like a piker.
And later on in the Alan Moore Interview - Jess gets Alan Moore to demolish my Nemo theory.
Ouch!
The essays are also worth reading.

I got mine autographed.......2003-07-23
The great comic book The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was packed with references to literature from the Victorian era. Some of these books are famous, some of them are obscure. Jess Nevins has done an excellent job of tracking down the books, so now you can know the history of these characters, many of which have been forgotten one hundred years later. For instance, I don't think too many people knew who "Rose Coote", the headmistress of the girl's school, was. Well, in this book, you can learn the history of that character, as well as every other character who is so much as mentioned in the comic. By the way, I met Jess at the San Diego Comic Con, and he said he is working on an Encyclopedia about the League. From what he said, it will be around a thousand pages long, so start saving your money now.
Excellent companion piece!.......2003-07-06
For any true fan of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (the comics, not the film), this is the book to purchase. The League is not only a wonderful story, but is also filled to the brim with references and images from other Victorian fictions of the same era. Some references are quite obvious, many are obscure, but all test your intelligence and literary know-how. There is a certain satisfaction in identifying a character on a page from a book you read years ago. Jess Nevins has collected all the annotations of these reference points contained in the first volume of LOEG. Reading it is a great enhancement to the already considerable enjoyment to be found in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen!
Book Description
In the 10 years since its first publication,
When the Fat Lady Sings has sold more than 60,000 copies worldwide. Now, to celebrate a decade of delighting opera fans and foes alike, musical historian and humorist David Barber has prepared a special revised and expanded edition of his hilarious bestselling history of opera. Chapters such as Serious Buffoonery, Teutonic Tunesmiths and, of course, Italian Sausage Machines display Barber's rapier wit and knack for knowing fascinating, if sometimes useless, information about music, musicians and the offbeat world they live in. This expanded edition includes new material ranging from Strauss to ragtime, opera to the Tenor Menace. From Italian castrati to German Ring-bearers, from Handel's fights with rival sopranos to Puccini's nicotine habit, the author of Bach, Beethoven and the Boys and Tenors, Tantrums and Trills delivers a funny yet informative, irreverent yet affectionate history of serious music's most serious art form as only he can - and as only he would dare to do.
Customer Reviews:
A very funny, beginner-friendly book.......2007-08-20
I am a voice student at a local college and am not too familiar with opera's history nor too familiar with the lives of the different composers, so I picked up this book from the library as a sort of introduction because it does not look very threatening (as do other books on operas). What is so great about this book is that it tells you essential details about composers, and at the same time it is written in simple every day English and with his tongue firmly in his cheek. Sure, you absolutely need to read other books in order to get a deeper look into the world of opera, but this is a great start for a beginner! Something that made me laugh out loud while reading it is on page 20 in a footnote in which Barber says: "Counterpoint is a kind of musical needlepoint, made famous by J.S. Bach as a means of proving how intellectually inadequate all the rest of us are." (If you've had the pleasure of studying counterpoint, you may be able to relate to that quote). My problem with the book is that I think it's way too short- he seems to brush over things rather quickly, and while he gets important details across, you often wish there was more. One thing is for sure- I was sad when I finished this book! Also, I think he should have covered more composers and gone more into detail about the different operas. Overall, I highly recommend this book no matter how much you know about opera, as it is very humorous.
A GREAT Way To Learn Opera!!.......2000-12-31
I am a music major at college and study opera intensivly. There are some really boring books on the subject, but When The Fat Lady Sings is NOT one of them! All of the facts were there and were presented in a way that kept my attention. I would reccomend this book to the music student looking to brush up on composers, to the people who want to know a little more about what opera is, and to the person who wants something interesting to say at a cocktail party. Anyone can learn something from this book with or without music knowledge. I didn't think a book could be written about opera that is both true to the subject AND funny. Well done Mr. Barber!
I loved it!.......2000-01-06
I loved this book. It's funny and cute! I did never know Wagner loved pink silk underwears... It's the best book to read if you are not an opera lover, and have to get the information...
Great Intro to Opera History.......2000-01-06
This book tells all the fun stuff that you don't usually hear about opera composers along with a sturdy structure of opera history. Easy to read and intensely funny, this book's only weakness is that it misses a lot of important composers and concentrates on a couple of unimportant ones. Thus, the reader is left with a feeling like the author got tired of writing and stopped halfway through. If the author added enough information for this book to be more comprehensive representation of opera history, it would a wonderful book for both opera experts and opera neophytes.
Hillariosly True stories of composers.......1999-04-14
I bought this book after I had been in "Carmen". Mr. Barber brings out a funny story in operas that are meant to be sad, romantic, and makes the comical ones even more laughable. I reccommend this book to all lovers of opera

The ideal companion to the author's bestselling The Product Manager's Handbook, The Product Manager's Field Guide expands upon the overview and the responsibilities of product managers and delves into specific skills, abilities, and competencies to help them improve their performance. It provides readers with tools and exercises for functions such as marketing, planning, forecasting, and new product development and offers step-by-step instructions for activities designed to monitor and assess product-planning efforts.
Customer Reviews:
Best for beginners in Product Management.......2007-05-19
This is a very good book if you are new to product management or are making a career switch from a non-managerial career to product management. If you have managed one or two product life cyles in the past, you are less likely to benefit from it.
A significant portion of this book is devoted to general management, but in the product management context. Nonetheless, the book is very well organized and systematic. It develops concepts in detail and offers a wealth of information, that you would otherwise have to pay a lot more to collect from other sources. I would highly recommend it to all beginners in this discipline. Experienced individuals may use it as an occassional reference.
Beginners Guide to Product Management.......2005-08-02
This and the handbook are very similar, you need only one. This is a difficult topic to cover when you are not sure of the depth of background of the reader. Does the reader have knowledge of marketing or not. To this point it appears in many places the book assumes you do not, so any general marketing text could be a better source.

Does Anyone Have an Update on Lori?.......2007-09-25
I loved this book's depiction of mental illness and have re-read it several times. I am going to push a question that has been alluded to in past reviews. This book was published 11 years ago. Does anyone have any updates as to how Lori has been doing since then? Thank you very much.
Powerful, Uplifting (and sometimes triggering) Account Of Schizophrenia.......2007-09-23
The Quiet Room is a powerful account of a woman lost in her illness of schizophrenia. I was amazed at how the author, Lori, hid her hallucinations from people for so long before getting treatment. I found myself angry at her parents for denying her illness for so long and delaying treatment which she very much needed years before it was received.
It's also amazing that Lori made it through her experience of schizophrenia and was able to tell her story. During the worst of her illness, she was extremely suicidal at times and thought nothing of it (for example, playing a game of crossing the street again and again with her eyes closed and walkman blaring so she couldn't hear the cars). She could have easily died at those times and not come through to tell her story.
This book was very well written and made me feel for Lori. I couldn't put this down once I started. Although, I did give it a five star review and found it to be one of the most interesting books I've read, I don't necessarily recommend it to everyone.
At times this book was too well written, too many details and caused parts of the book to be triggering for me. I'm not schizophrenic (never have been), but I've been in hospitals for depression and other things. Lori's details of the "quiet room" (seclusion in the hospitals) and what happened to her when she was out of control in the hospitals was disturbing to me, as I've been in different "quiet rooms" in hospitals and I found myself remembering my own experiences and getting upset. Just because this was triggering for me, doesn't mean it will be for others. I'm just saying, you've been warned.
As triggering as this book was, it remains a five star for me. It was gripping, intense, real --just the way a book should be-- and I loved it. I liked the way the story was told through family members as well. It helps the reader see the perspectives of those who loved Lori. It shows how her illness affected others.
Overall, The Quiet Room is a sad book. But it's inspiring and uplifting at the end. If Lori can make it through the horrors of schizophrenia, we can make it through our day-to-day lives of work, school, and dilemmas. This book gave me hope.
Inside Their Mind - Distinguishing Teen Behavior from Psychological Torment.......2007-04-23
This book has changed my life. I am 40 years old. My mother is schizophrenic and my teenage daughter is now a hereditary statistic as she is also stricken with this terrible disease. I have always been the "informed" consumer and research everything that affects my life. Before my daughter began experiencing early onset of schizophrenia, I had dealt with my mother's illness extensively later in her life. I was with her during a psychotic break. I had the gut wrenching experience of processing a Baker Act through the courts to hospitalize her against her will. I engaged in productive and intelligent consultations with her medical providers. I thought I had this disease understood. I thought I knew...
The most unique and enlightening element of this biography is that the biographer began her life similar to my daughter's. Straight A student, gifted, very beautiful, popular, social, supportive & loving parents and an achiever in every way. So WHY does someone who has so much going for her sink so low? HOW can teachers, parents, siblings, friends distinguish symptoms of mental illness from common teen behavior and drama?
It is so easy to rely too heavily on the amazing new drugs that are currently available. We can easily, mistakenly feel a false sense of understanding and security. There is no cure for schizophrenia. There is no ONE pill that fixes ALL. There are a myriad of symptoms. There are hundreds of medications with hundreds of side affects. This book has given more insight than I could have ever dreamed in sorting all this out. After reading this book, my daughter and I are a team now. I really do understand. She is not just a badly behaved teen. She trusts me and I trust her.
She is only 14. She hears voices. They scream at her! She is being watched. She is in fear for her life.
We are in this together now with my having a clue - hearing her - perhaps for this first time.
Excellent!.......2007-03-09
I usually don't read books, but I was forced to read this one for an Abnormal Psychology class. This book kept me interested from beginning to end. It gave me a better understanding of schizophrenia. A must read for book readers.
The Quiet Room: A Journey Out of the Torment of Madness .......2007-01-10
A must read if you work in the Mental Health field or have family members with a mental illness.

Book Description
The second volume in this unique series, now in paperback, offers more than 200 rare and previously unpublished photographs of the vast range of offensive, defensive and ground-based operation s in which the Royal Air Force was involved during World War II.
Book Description
On November 4, 1979, Iranian militants stormed the United States Embassy in Tehran and took sixty-six Americans captive. Thus began the Iran Hostage Crisis, an affair that captivated the American public for 444 days and marked America's first confrontation with the forces of radical Islam. Using hundreds of recently declassified government documents, historian David Farber takes the first in-depth look at the hostage crisis, examining its lessons for America's contemporary War on Terrorism.
Unlike other histories of the subject, Farber's vivid and fast-paced narrative looks beyond the day-to-day circumstances of the crisis, using the events leading up to the ordeal as a means for understanding it. The book paints a portrait of the 1970s in the United States as an era of failed expectations in a nation plagued by uncertainty and anxiety. It reveals an American government ill prepared for the fall of the Shah of Iran and unable to reckon with the Ayatollah Khomeini and his militant Islamic followers.
Farber's account is filled with fresh insights regarding the central players in the crisis: Khomeini emerges as an astute strategist, single-mindedly dedicated to creating an Islamic state. The Americans' student-captors appear as less-than-organized youths, having prepared for only a symbolic sit-in with just a three-day supply of food. ABC news chief Roone Arledge, newly installed and eager for ratings, is cited as a critical catalyst in elevating the hostages to cause célèbre status.
Throughout the book there emerge eerie parallels to the current terrorism crisis. Then as now, Farber demonstrates, politicians failed to grasp the depth of anger that Islamic fundamentalists harbored toward the United States, and Americans dismissed threats from terrorist groups as the crusades of ineffectual madmen.
Taken Hostage is a timely and revealing history of America's first engagement with terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism, one that provides a chilling reminder that the past is only prologue.
Customer Reviews:
More than a mere account of historical events.......2005-01-24
This book is an outstandingly researched work and I applaud Farber's thoroughness. I just finished writing my final research paper for my historical methods class on the Iran hostage crisis and this text was an indispensable resource.
It is so much more than just an account of the hostage crisis. Farber really delves beneath the surface of the events and decisions related to the crisis. He paints a picture for the reader of the sentiments prevalent among the citizenries of both the United States and Iran. He goes further by describing the reasons behind those sentiments. This puts the decisions made by the Carter administration, the actions taken by the Iranians, and the reactions to both of these by the American public in a context and framework essential to understanding the hostage crisis and its related issues. Highly Recommended.
Excellent historical account.......2004-11-10
Farber does a very good job with this book. I was anxious to read it for its historical significance with the 25th anniversary of the hostage crisis. I was in grade school during those 444 days. I wasn't old enough to understand why our citizens were being held. I was old enough to remember other things: the yellow ribbons, Walter Cronkite counting the days each night, Mickey Mouse bumper stickers giving Iran the finger.
The book is very strong with the background of Iranian/US relations. Most Americans probably don't realize the important role people like Eisenhower (and the CIA) played in deposing Iranian despot Mossadegh and installing Mohammed Reza Pahlavi (the Shah) into power.
Farber does a nice job of explaining how it is the policy decisions of the US government that were the root causes of the hostage crisis. The main decisions being installing the Shah and subsequently providing refuge for an ailing Shah in mid-1979. An interesting parallel can be drawn today with the current war on terror. Al Qaeda doesn't hate America so much for what we stand for as for the policy decisions we make.
Farber also does a nice job of describing the troubled days of the Carter administration. Carter had to deal with almost insurmountable problems during his term. Stagflation, high unemployment, the gas crunch and finally (his ultimate downfall) the crisis in Iran.
The book reads very quickly for a so-called historical white-paper. I would recommend it for anyone who is interested in knowing a bit more about the history of Iran and the hostage crisis as well as those interested in the war on terror and some of its early beginnings.
