I used this book as a text while I taught at Notre Dame. It is a very good book which clearly and simply provides ways to access understand and critique student own art or art that they see.It is well written and a good tool for anyone to gain understanding and meaning of the artist, the process of making art and its function in our society. I will be using it at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.

Needs to be a movie!.......2007-10-02
Without giving away too many of the plot twists, I guess I can say that this is an alternate-history fantasy-punk story, based in a world where the main character wakes up in a "Victorian Era" gone terribly wrong. Historic figures such as Queen Victoria and Napoleon pop in but won't resemble anything you recall from world history class. The main character, Cole Blaquesmith, is part man, part coal-powered machine, and while trying to recall his lost memories, find his lost love, and fix time, he becomes the hero of a revolutionary movement against the prevailing dictator, a mad scientist-type villain named Absinthe.
I just finished reading the "Steampunk:Manimatron" and "Steampunk:Drama Obscura" graphic novels. These contain the 12 comics, prologue and preview comic "Steampunk Catechism." Sadly, the series ended halfway through, before it was finished (24 comics were planned, according to wikipedia).
With that in mind, though, it's still worth reading. Very compelling - if difficult to follow - non-linear story-telling, with very intense artwork. I found myself wishing I had a magnifying glass, or that the pictures were twice as large. It is sometimes difficult to tell who is saying what, in what order, and what is going on. Still, it's rich, textured, interesting and action-packed, with great characters. Just keep reading, and in some strange way, it all begins to make sense.
I started out buying just comics 1-3, and based on those, went ahead and purchased both graphic novels. I'm not a comics geek, I've only read a few other things, such as 1602 and Watchmen, so I'm no expert. But I think this comic begs to be a movie! I would LOVE to see Cole Blaquesmith, Victoria, Laslo, Absinthe and Faust on the big screen.
Abstruse and Complex.......2007-09-13
An intriguing world of Victorian England gone mad with steam-punk and animal-man hybrids. The characters are all very original, the illustrations detailed, crowded and sometimes very confusing. The plot is a little hard to understand as is the sequence of the panels. All in all this requires a tedious amount of work to keep up with, but if the premise and atmosphere do it for you, I would say it is worth the read. I enjoyed the first title and am on my way to beginning the second. I wish they had spaced things out a bit more, given some of the panels more breathing room, some of the characters more time to develop but the writers enjoy throwing us in to the melting pot, so to speak, and letting us figure things out on our own.
A must hae for the Comic Collector.......2005-02-20
In the second volume of Joe Kelly's, writer of "The Obsidian Age"(JLA)And "Godfall"(Superman), which are awesome as well, continues his trek into the underbelly of the Absinthian nightmare. Chris Bachello's drawing is some of the most complex and awe inspiring yet. It will require multiple readings to fully appreciate the detail Chris puts into the art- work. An epic journey is slowly unfolding, with a nice cliffhanger ending. Quite possibly one of the best trades ever put out.

This book is a compilation of crazy inventions and oddities created by the author. Each invention is accompanied by a "sales pitch" which explains the utility of the invention and how modern man can benefit from the particular creation. This is a very funny book.

buying a house, all written in a way that I can really relate to as a single woman.
It has given me confidence, and also makes me feel better equipped to deal with whats coming in my house hunt. It's like having an understanding girlfriend with you all the time - one who knows all about real estate!

The Quintessential Guide to Real Estate Written by Women for Women!.......2006-03-22
If you're thinking about buying a home don't do anything until you've read this wonderful book! The strength of this book is the collective experience, wisdom, and heart with which the information is shared. It really appeals to the way women think and learn.
I usually find how-to books dry and difficult to absorb, but The Tao Gal's Guide to Real Estate presents practical information on everything from finding the right real estate agent, to qualifying for a mortagage, and surviving escrow in a straightforward, easy-to-understand way.
The authors, Bernadette Murphy and Michelle Huneven, share their personal real estate stories as well as the stories of the other women in their Tao Gal's group, which is a group of six women who meet weekly and read from the spiritual text, the Tao te Ching.
My favorite part of this book was the way the authors told a personal story and incorporated the spiritual wisdom of the Tao te Ching along with practical advice on how to handle one of the most stressful events in life.
At the end of each chapter, they include a Tao worksheet that addresses the emotional aspects and anxiety behind buying a home. I felt very comforted by the information and the way it's written made me feel like I was a member of their group.
There's a wonderful glossary at the back as well.
This well researched book succeeds because the practical information is coupled with spiritual wisdom and it's written in an entertaining, heart warming, revelatory voice that celebrates the incredible strength of women and the power of community!
It's very satisfying and I highly recommend it!
Real Estate for Humans.......2006-03-01
As a man who, with my wife, has bought two homes in the past five years, I wish this wonderful book had been available to us before we did so. I've gamely waded through tomes offering financial advice before, but this is altogether different, a book about real estate that is built on storytelling -- with narrative skills reflecting the literary pedigrees of its co-authors. It's quite serious and ultimately decodes the daunting abracadabra of escrow fees and loan packages, but meanwhile it's a great read! The title could just as easily be "Real Estate for Humans."
An invaluable asset - this book!.......2006-01-25
I recently got The Tao Gals Guide to Real Estate in the mail and couldn't put it down. I had millions of things to do but I just could not put it down.
In my life I have bought three houses. The first house I was a single woman. The next two houses I was married. However, being married did not make the process any easier on any level.
Once again, I find myself single and deciding whether to buy or not to buy.
Fortunately, reading The Tao Gals Guide to Real Estate let me go through the entire "deciding to buy, house hunting, buying, refurbishing," process without having to do it all again.
This deeply personal book helped me take a look at the financial, spiritual, and mental health considerations when buying a home. Yet, there is a nuts and bolts aspect to the book that I desperately needed.
Thanks to this guide - the personal stories, tragedies, successes, and work sheets- I could make a rational decision. I now know what it would REALLY cost. I was able to make a decision that is based in reality and not fear.
Because the women in the book were so honest and clear about their journeys it helped me with mine.

What do you believe in? James Yee believed in God and America and one of those got him thrown in jail.
In 2001, Captain James "Yusuf" Yee was commissioned as one of the first Muslim chaplains in the United States Army. After the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001, he became a frequent government spokesman, helping to educate soldiers about Islam and build understanding throughout the military. Subsequently, Chaplain Yee was selected to serve as the Muslim Chaplain at Guantanamo Bay, where nearly 700 detainees captured in the war on terror were being held as "unlawful combatants."
In September 2003, after serving at Guantanamo for ten months in a role that gave him unrestricted access to the detainees--and after receiving numerous awards for his service there--Chaplain Yee was secretly arrested on his way to meet his wife and daughter for a routine two-week leave. He was locked away in a navy prison, subject to much of the same treatment that had been imposed on the Guantanamo detainees. Wrongfully accused of spying, and aiding the Taliban and Al Qaeda, Yee spent 76 excruciating days in solitary confinement and was threatened with the death penalty.
After the U.S. government determined it had made a grave mistake in its original allegations, it vindictively charged him with adultery and computer pornography. In the end all criminal charges were dropped and Chaplain Yee's record wiped clean. But his reputation was tarnished, and what has been a promising military career was left in ruins.

What about the LT he slept with while still married.
What about his endorser for Muslim chaplains who was also giving money to radical muslims.
Yee shame on you. You got caught and now are making money.

I started to read this book at about 4:30 pm and finished reading by the morning at 4:45 am. It obviously was one of the best book that I have read in a long time and I got to understand that what I will expect from my own country if I were to fulfill my dream as a Muslim Chaplin. I absolutely believe that the Americans and our government will have a better understanding and freedom of religion not only in writing and constitution but in the real life dealing with fellow Muslims. Why Islam became a target? Islam is not the source of terrorism but it is the people who interpret things wrongly and propagate it. I sometimes become really frustrated when I see that our own media is misinterpreting a religion which our own people posses as a daily life practice. Source of all hatred is ignorance. I will request each and every citizen to read and learn more before making a judgment.
Vigilance of American Civil Liberties is Crucial.......2006-05-03
I read For God and Country in a few days. It is simply unbelievable how this miscarriage of justice could happen to a military officer who obviously did his job too well. Perhaps this book will challenge Americans to resist the attempted normalization of eroded civil liberties perpetrated by the Bush administration. While 9/11 has forever scarred the collective consciousness of Americans, we must take care not to allow the beheading of Lady Justice by corrupt people in office and in the military who seek to exploit the anxiety Americans feel about their safety. The memory of those who died in the terrorist attacks on 9/11 depends on our vigilance of what remains of our civil liberties.

A Courageous Man; A Dangerous Country.......2006-03-18
I was astonished to read this account of Chaplain Yee's ministry at GTMO and subsequent imprisonment and harrassment by our government. Even if a few parts might be self serving, as a whole this is a story that everyone needs to know about. Here was a young man who was totally committed to serving God and his country,and did so under extremely difficult circumstances with absolutely no awareness that things might turn sour for him. Since reading the book I have vowed to have as little to do with our government as possible under the current paranoid administration. We live in dangerous times. Yee is a hero. I hope he has figured out how to put his life back together in some new ways.

Do you live, or are you planning to live in Europe? Then, this is a must read book.
I am very pleased that I had the chance to read this book. I have recently moved to U.K. and realized the huge impact that the EU had on each European country. You as a citizen of European Union need to understand how EU works and how it can affect your life. If you have not been following the EU development as I (I had been living outside Europe all my life), this book is a great tool to catch up. This book will guide you through the history, issues, and policies of EU which will help you understand the current situation. In the introduction and through out the book the author mentions that so many of the European people do not understand how the EU works... well, lets read this book and learn. This is an introductory book to EU and it is not difficult to read. I am a non native speaker of English but I did not have any problem understanding the content. This is a well researched book giving you up to date information with interesting data represented in figures.
Now that I have caught up with the up to date information about the EU, I am feeling very excited about the future of European Union and individual European countries (sometimes referred as "the states" of the United States of Europe). As I am studying future forecasting, this book not only helped me to understand the history and the current situations in Europe but also gave me hints and ideas about the future of Europe. With the knowledge I gained from this book, now I will understand the news better than I did before, and know what I need to look for in the development of the EU. What policies will be made to integrate the European market? Will it be "single market"? How will the EU's economic power change the balance of the world's economy? Is it going to be NO1 economic power? Cultural and political issues are more difficult to forecast... What will be identified as the culture of EU? What is the balance between the national and EU culture? Is the European Parliament (this is the only European institution that have direct influence from European voters) going to have more influence on EU policy making? Is EU heading towards federalism? The author asks "will it happen, should it happen, what form will it take, what impact will it have if it succeeds, and what impact will it have if it fails?"
I have learnt that it is important to have the right questions when you forecast about the future. This book has definitely provided me with the chance to think about questions that I should be asking for.
As I did, you will have some idea or wishes about the future of Europe by the end of the book. This is the third edition of the book, and I am sure there will be more editions to come.
Excellent Overall Review.......2005-10-24
I'm currently taking a course on the EU in which the professor gave us carte blanche to purchase our own books on the EU. I was delighted to find out that this book was written by a professor who understands what and how to communicate this information to students. Plus, since the writer is a British immigrant, he could incorporate the European perspective of the EU from first-hand experience as opposed to a vicarious one. This book was very good at providing background info (without harping too much on history) and bringing the reader up-to-speed with current events as well as personal thoughts on the EU's future. Kudos to the writer. Thank you very much. Your book was very helpful. Cheers!
