Customer Reviews:
Great Stuff.......2006-02-15
As an actor and director, I have found Madd Harold's book indispensable for the past two years. I love the muscularity of the discipline he calls for - it frees the artist in me, and I've seen it happen when others in my company have employed Harold's techniques. Bravo!
Good book.......2005-10-22
Contains a lot of practical, down-to-earth advice about playing Shakespeare. Acting Shakespeare is frequently feared. This book shows how to act Shakespeare well and how to avoid many of the common pitfalls. Very practical, sensible advice from someone who obviously knows what he is talking about; no academic discussions here, just practical advice on how to actually PLAY Shakespeare as he should be played! Definitely recommended.
A refreshing and insightful book.......2003-01-31
As a professional actor and director, I have read many books on playing Shakespeare, as well as books on Shakespearean theory and criticism. Some of these books were excellent, some poor. Mr. Harold's book is excellent. Harold offers a practical guide, full of insights and tricks I had never read or though of before. Through a conversational style, he guides the reader through many techniques and secrets of pentamter, prose, etc., and the result is clear. Using a non-academic writing style, Harold is readable and engaging. A fresh, exciting book for any performer.

I read this book over Christmas, and found it more than helpful. The author makes Shakespeare so clear, and so easy for the actor, I wonder why someone didn't write this book earlier. I am not a professional actor, but this book makes me want to play Shakespeare more than ever before. First-rate, simple, and brilliant
Book Description
Getting dressed every morning probably causes more trauma than anything else we do on a daily basis. No one understands this better than Betty Halbreich. She's seen firsthand that putting on clothes is as much -- if not more -- about the mind as it is about the body. Each day, her dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman is filled with women searching for something. They may think they're merely shopping for a new dress, but as Betty knows, sometimes they're really shopping for a whole new life. Whatever these women are seeking, Betty is sure to help them find it.
With simple instructions and witty asides, Betty takes her experience out of the dressing room and puts it into readers' hands. Follow her through the years and through the stores as she sheds light on such fashion conundrums as how to break up with the color black, what to wear on "Casual Friday," what "black-tie" really means and how to wear just about any accessory.
Betty elevates shopping and dressing to an art form, yet she makes you realize how simple it really is to look fabulous. She is truly a fashion therapist, dispensing wisdom, wit and advice on how to enhance your natural beauty, build a more confident self-image, and, most of all, have a little fun while doing it.
Customer Reviews:
A Fashion Therapist?.......2006-06-21
This book is a REPRINT, so it was originaly
written in a completely different fashion time.
The fashion clothes and tips in this book were
extremely outdated. Betty Halbreich is an elder
so she really doesn't give fashion advice that
would fit for someone that is under the age of 30.
Waste of time.......2005-08-03
I was excited about reading this book because the cover and table of contents looked so interesting. However, upon reading it, I'm not sure exactly what it was about. It was boring, disorganized, and the author's overwhelming sense of snobbery was quite a turnoff! (Not to mention the blurbs on nearly every page singing her praises. Weird.) If you can check it our from the library, it's a quick read, but don't waste your money.
Pleasant reading. Nothing not in many other books........2005-04-19
I have read several books on fashion recently. This one is enjoyable reading and contains good advice. It does not include information designed on how to make the most of your particular body shape, which is information available in several other books. If you haven't already read several similar books, this is one of the better ones. I don't think I read much that I didn't already know. One thing about the book was very odd. There were little blurbs praising the author on almost every page. I don't doubt that the author is extremely good at what she does and if nothing else, the book made me want to go to her for fashion advice. So, as an advertisement for her services, it works very well. But, for those of us that don't live in Manhattan, it is all fairly irrelevant and ..... odd.
Fantastic!.......2002-07-13
I found this book browsing through a bookstore a few years back. It was one of the first books I'd ever purchased on clothing and personal style ... and it remains one of my favourites. Since then, I've read a multitude of 'what to wear'and 'how to wear' books. None of them have the same objective recommendations. Most of them somehow imply the author's subjective preferences which completely defeats the purpose of a book on developing 'personal' style.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in expressing themselves through the clothes they wear.
A great read.......2000-09-28
I loved this book. It reminded me of shopping as a young girl when there were women in all the grand old department stores who knew about clothes and would pass their knowledge on. So much of this has been lost in our self-service world. With this book, Betty Halbreich offers her expertise not only to the well-heeled patrons of Bergdorf-Goodman, but to the rest of us. And her take on the whole "fashion thing" is so light-hearted. After reading Secrets of a Fashion Therapist, I am savvier at shopping -- and I have more fun doing it.

Book Description
Of the five epic films interpreting the sinking of the Titanic, the docu-drama A Night to Remember (1958) is the definitive version. Jeffrey Richards’ remarkable book examines the film’s place in the continuing generation of Titanic mythology. He analyzes the film, unravels its production history and reception, and compares it with the other Titanic films, notably James Cameron’s recent blockbuster Titanic.
Customer Reviews:
A Film Well-Remembered.......2003-09-19
Jeffrey Richards is one of the best writers on British film, and he has done another fine job with this book. In a short space he has traced the history of the Titanic sinking in history, with a strong focus on the best film of the bunch, the British "A Night to Remember."
Richards traces Titantic films pre-"Night" and post-"Night," showing how films of this disaster reflect how people thought of the British.
As for the film itself, he gives a very interesting career overview of the director, Roy Ward Baker, and sets the film in the British tradition of realism that became the dominant film style in that country during and after WWII. He sees "Night" as the end of that tradition.
Warning: Mr. Richards states his opinions very strongly, and he gives short shift to non-realistic British films and current Hollywood attitudes (as exemplified in the 1997 film Titanic.) These opinions might bother some people, but they don't take away from the quality of this book, which is very informative and highly readable.
Book Description
Seize the Work Day describes using the Tablet PC to help the average office work-manager get control of his/her work day and become more productive. It paints a compelling picture of the Tablet PC as a very practical business tool, and assists the user in succeeding with the Tablet PC in such a setting.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource on Tablet PC.......2006-08-24
I really like the author's approach, since he actually gives both relevant technical information and provides the practical business practice.
How-to books are "easy" to write... what Michael Linenberger does is fantastic and more technical books should be written with this dual perspective!
Tablet PC book not for learning the Tablet.......2006-07-05
This book is not for someone learning to really use the Tablet PC. It is about his system of organization and how to use the Tablet PC as a key device in organizing your life, as the title indicates. I was disappointed in the book overall as I was looking for a book that would educate the physicians I support in better use of the Tablet itself.
Good Reminder for Professionals.......2006-03-26
As I read the book it reminded me of all the things I should be doing to keep my work organized. The tablet PC is a great tool which I encorporated into my daily routine prior to reading. This book gave me helpful hints on how to do things effectively and efficently on my tablet. The book is written using the beta and initial version of the tablet PC tools. If you purchase you must download the updates of Chapters 3 & 4. This update gives a better understanding of the current tools of the tablet PC. It is worth the money in time saved.
Should be sold with every tablet pc!.......2006-03-09
Microsoft should package a copy of this book with every tablet sold! Good for personal and business productivity!
Great for the right work environment.......2006-01-03
I really enjoyed the book, and it was very helpful to me in getting up to speed on how to take advantage of the features of my new Tablet Convertible.
I think workers and executives who spend a large portion of their time in and out of meetings will get the most out of this book. As an independent contractor who spends 80 to 90% of of my time working at my desk in my home office, I felt a lot didn't really apply to me.
Also, the book really is outdated, now. He reviews the pros and cons of his recommended software tools -- but ALL of them have had significant upgrades since publication.
The author points to his website, where he promises updates as technology changes, but I only found a single updated chapter (really an article) that describes the major enhancement of SP 2 of Windows XP. It was a great article, but I was disappointed there was nothing about GoBinder (not mentioned in his book) nor the updates to OneNote, PlanPlus, and MindManager.
This book should be studied for ideas and concepts to consider and adapt, rather than followed as the ideal system.
Bottom line is that I got a lot out of this book, and I will now be more effective with my Tablet PC.
Book Description
The most complete portrait ever drawn of the complex emotional connection between two of history’s towering leaders
Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill were the greatest leaders of “the Greatest Generation.” In Franklin and Winston, Jon Meacham explores the fascinating relationship between the two men who piloted the free world to victory in World War II. It was a crucial friendship, and a unique one—a president and a prime minister spending enormous amounts of time together (113 days during the war) and exchanging nearly two thousand messages. Amid cocktails, cigarettes, and cigars, they met, often secretly, in places as far-flung as Washington, Hyde Park, Casablanca, and Teheran, talking to each other of war, politics, the burden of command, their health, their wives, and their children.
Born in the nineteenth century and molders of the twentieth and twenty-first, Roosevelt and Churchill had much in common. Sons of the elite, students of history, politicians of the first rank, they savored power. In their own time both men were underestimated, dismissed as arrogant, and faced skeptics and haters in their own nations—yet both magnificently rose to the central challenges of the twentieth century. Theirs was a kind of love story, with an emotional Churchill courting an elusive Roosevelt. The British prime minister, who rallied his nation in its darkest hour, standing alone against Adolf Hitler, was always somewhat insecure about his place in FDR’s affections—which was the way Roosevelt wanted it. A man of secrets, FDR liked to keep people off balance, including his wife, Eleanor, his White House aides—and Winston Churchill.
Confronting tyranny and terror, Roosevelt and Churchill built a victorious alliance amid cataclysmic events and occasionally conflicting interests. Franklin and Winston is also the story of their marriages and their families, two clans caught up in the most sweeping global conflict in history.
Meacham’s new sources—including unpublished letters of FDR’s great secret love, Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd, the papers of Pamela Churchill Harriman, and interviews with the few surviving people who were in FDR and Churchill’s joint company—shed fresh light on the characters of both men as he engagingly chronicles the hours in which they decided the course of the struggle.
Hitler brought them together; later in the war, they drifted apart, but even in the autumn of their alliance, the pull of affection was always there. Charting the personal drama behind the discussions of strategy and statecraft, Meacham has written the definitive account of the most remarkable friendship of the modern age.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-09-16
Jon has done a splendid job of bringing to life these two titans of world history. The relationship of these two men are recreated with a detail to personal traits and their crumbling world around them. This book has been pivotal in enhancing a better understanding of both men, and particularly how Franklin D. Roosevelt, albeit his duplicity and guile, was crucial in the fight against the evil Axis powers.
Some have criticized FDR for those white lies, yet those lies and actions secured success for a slumbering nation that would have remained set in their isolationist ways, and would have certainly fallen victim to Hitler's death machine if America followed their own self interest and avoided conflict. Roosevelt was clairvoyant enough to understand the threat and coddle America's misguided sentiments and turn it into action, action that made America the clear world leader it became. A magnificent book of a magnificent man, along with his strong-willed partner Winston. Mecham's treatment of both men is sound and extremely admirable. Highly recommended.
BFF?.......2007-09-07
Well, while Winston and Franklin might not have been best friends forever, it certainly is refreshing and enlightening to see this aspect of WW2 given such detail. The book is rife with quotes from direct corespondences as well as excerpts from various diaries of those surrounding these two titans. Jon Meacham does an excellent job with this book and really makes learning about these two enjoyable. While not a complaint, it is worth noting that this is NOT a history of WW2 and you should probably know the basics before diving in because Meacham jumps forward and glosses over major points, but this best serves his main focus: Churchill and Roosevelt.
An Excellent look at the friendship that shaped the modern world .......2007-06-21
Jon Meacham presents an interesting portrait of two leaders in World War II and the way they united the allies. This book is not meant to serve as a book on World War II and diplomacy but on the relationship between FDR and Churchill. In doing so the author presents a unique perspective that has not been looked at in many of the countless World War II books. The personal relationship of these two men (much like the personal relationship of their enemies Mussolini and Hitler) drove and shaped the course of the war. Each complimented each others strengths and in the end allowed for a unique position to be taken. There had been few examples of this kind of diplomacy before World War II and Meacham shows a diplomacy that would be very important thereafter. This book is filled with excerpts from personal letters and is very well cited. For those who want a different look that your standard World War II books this is an excellent place to start. It is a very light book to read and a lot of fun.
Captivating Insights.......2007-05-11
Franklin and Winston is an excellent book about the friendship between FDR, and Winston Churchill. Many people know the big-picture history between these two men, mostly centering around WWII, but few actually know and understand the smaller details between the two giants of the 20th century. Meacham does a remarkable job detailing the intimate moments between these men, often giving the reader a fly on the wall feel. Franklin and Winston is a fast-paced read, and is highly recommended.
Great read!.......2007-04-29
Superbly written! Whether you like biographies or not, you will love this book!!

Book Description
The wave of ethnic conflict that has recently swept across parts of Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and Africa has led many political observers to fear that these conflicts are contagious. Initial outbreaks in such places as Bosnia, Chechnya, and Rwanda, if not contained, appear capable of setting off epidemics of catastrophic proportions. In this volume, David Lake and Donald Rothchild have organized an ambitious, sophisticated exploration of both the origins and spread of ethnic conflict, one that will be useful to policymakers and theorists alike.
The editors and contributors argue that ethnic conflict is not caused directly by intergroup differences or centuries-old feuds and that the collapse of the Soviet Union did not simply uncork ethnic passions long suppressed. They look instead at how anxieties over security, competition for resources, breakdown in communication with the government, and the inability to make enduring commitments lead ethnic groups into conflict, and they consider the strategic interactions that underlie ethnic conflict and its effective management.
How, why, and when do ethnic conflicts either diffuse by precipitating similar conflicts elsewhere or escalate by bringing in outside parties? How can such transnational ethnic conflicts best be managed? Following an introduction by the editors, which lays a strong theoretical foundation for approaching these questions, Timur Kuran, Stuart Hill, Donald Rothchild, Colin Cameron, Will H. Moore, and David R. Davis examine the diffusion of ideas across national borders and ethnic alliances. Without disputing that conflict can spread, James D. Fearon, Stephen M. Saideman, Sandra Halperin, and Paula Garb argue that ethnic conflict today is primarily a local phenomenon and that it is breaking out in many places simultaneously for similar but largely independent reasons. Stephen D. Krasner, Daniel T. Froats, Cynthia S. Kaplan, Edmond J. Keller, Bruce W. Jentleson, and I. William Zartman focus on the management of transnational ethnic conflicts and emphasize the importance of domestic confidence-building measures, international intervention, and preventive diplomacy.
Book Description
"Get rich quick! Read this book and learn how to invest in politicians for fun and profit! Just don't leave this book where any regular voters can read it!"
-Arianna Huffington, author of Pigs at the Trough
Every day corporations and other wealthy special interests pump another $2 million into the coffers of our elected officials in Washington and their party committees. For their money they get an estimated $160 billion a year in tax breaks, subsidies, and other sweet deals. That's $160 billion lifted from taxpayers' pockets-or about $1,500 per taxpayer per year! But that's not the worst of it. Their money also buys them the opportunity to shape public policy to suit their bottom lines. And the cost we pay for that is much dearer. Blending satirical bite with mountains of eye-opening research, this rollicking call to arms breaks the issue into manageable, kitchen-table topics and makes it accessible with graphs, tables, sidebars, quizzes, and fascinating factoids.
"Sifry and Watzman lay it all out with no bark on it in this devastatingly straight-forward book-the overt corruption of our country through what we politely call `the campaign finance system.' Legalized bribery is the root of our political rot and few people know more about how to fix it and have done more to fix it than the good folks at Public Campaign."
-Molly Ivins, author of Bushwhacked
"Sifry and Watzman are two of the most astute observers of political influence in this country. Their important new book names names and cuts through the bull about the issues that affect our daily lives, in a wonderfully amusing but drop-dead accurate way!"
-Charles Lewis, author of The Buying of the President 2004
Customer Reviews:
Naive to believe that we can eliminate corrupt influence on the political process.......2007-05-08
Sifry and Watzman in their book, Is That A Politician In Your Pocket, argue that the campaign finance system benefits a privileged few at the expense of the average citizen. They claim that wealthy special interests buy favors from Congress and the White House using campaign contributions. The authors make their case that corporations and wealthy individuals benefit from legislation passed in Washington by the way that campaigns are financed and by how they influence the election process. The authors also bring transparency to the significant amount of time politicians must spend on fund raising rather than on running the government. The authors' intent is to identify a very real problem in the American political process and provide ammunition to support campaign finance reform.
Sifry and Watzman support their position using a substantial amount of research and data from the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP). The Center for Responsive Politics is a non-partisan, non-profit research group based in Washington that tracks money in politics, and its effect on elections and public policy. The authors present a number of case studies on issues such as drug policy, food safety, the environment, public safety, and tax fairness to support their claim that large dollar contributions to political campaigns influence politicians in favor of special interests. Data reported by the CRP is a credible source of information to support the author's claims.
The book clearly adds fuel to the ongoing debate about campaign finance reform and Congressional ethics. Critics of the current campaign finance system claim that the amount of money pouring into elections is having a self-serving or even corrupt affect on politics. The book supports these critics and provides examples that can be used to argue their case. However, politicians need money to run political campaigns. If they do not get it from the current system, then how will campaigns be financed in a fair and unbiased manner? As long as politicians regulate business, then business should have an opportunity to influence politicians. Sifry and Watzman do not consider such opposing viewpoints in their book.
There are several other areas where the authors' approach in developing their arguments can be criticized. First, the causal relationship that they develop between campaign contributions and political influence should be questioned. Do campaign contributions influence politicians or do politicians with a particular bias attract campaign contributions? The second criticism of the authors' work is that it does not offer a balanced perspective on the issue. It is clearly a one-sided viewpoint on campaign finance issues and as such, affects the authors' credibility. The final criticism is that the authors only offer one solution to the problem, that being clean money elections. They do not offer viewpoints on possible issues with clean money elections as a solution. For example, who is to say which politicians get public money and how much?
The impact of Sifry and Watzman's book will depend on the reader's political bias. An audience in favor of campaign finance reform and one that is distrustful of politicians will embrace the book and the evidence provided within it. Members of the Democratic Party may find the book useful because of how it appears to point a big finger at the motives of the Republican Party. Members of the Republican Party will likely find the book biased and attack the credibility of its claims and arguments. If nothing else, the book provides good, controversial material that should serve as a point of dialogue on the issue of corporate influence on the political process.
An excellent though disturbing read..........2006-01-24
Years from now we'll look back in wonder about how politicians in 2006 could take money, gifts, and free vacations from lobbyists and corporations with business before congress. In any other country they'd call these actions bribery and payola. In America we call it freedom of speech. These people should be thrown in jail, not re-elected.
This is an absolute must-read if you care about the future of your country. The author's solution is public financing of campaigns at a cost of $5 to $10 per taxpayer. That'd be a bargain at a hundred times the price.
BIASED LOOK AT MONEY IN POLITICS.......2004-10-12
The entire book is basically bashing Bush on ways that he obtained fortune through politics. All evidince in the book is subjective. Sifry is a hardcore liberal, and feels that we need to get Bush out of the White House; so if you feel the same way, read this book and Sifry will brainwash you into hating Bush more than you already do.
Or are you one of the 99% who can't afford to buy one?.......2004-07-24
After reading this book you'll want to shout from your window, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!" I've always known money drives policy in Washington, but this book makes it so crystal clear in a quick-read and fun-graphics way! Also, there is no doubt Campaign Finance reform must be an issue for the November elections - it's the only way 99% of us that don't have access to politicians through money can be heard!
This book gets you out of your chair..........2004-07-22
... and ready to Take Back America. It chronicles compelling examples of Congress and Bush putting the special interests' agenda before what is right for the people. It bypasses the sometimes arcane process of political fundraising straight to where the rubber meets the road: the making of government policies that affect our daily lives. Buy it. Read it, but have Maalox ready, it could turn your stomach. And get active in stopping the wholesale auction of public policy to those who can afford to bid the highest.
