Disappointing - not really a guide.......2003-04-06
There were no reviews on Amazon.ca, but the title was too intriguing to pass up. The back cover states: "With the help of this book, any clothing problems you have will completely disappear!" I think I was hoping for a how-to guide on effortless elegance. Instead, this book is a mini-encyclopedia of 20th century fashion with a focus on high-end brands. The perspective is European (I believe the text was translated from the German) and the style icons it uses to illustrate certain concepts are the ubiquitous ones (Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, Paloma Picasso, Lady Diana, Jackie Onassis, etc.). Some inclusions are questionable: classic hairstyles include Camilla Parker-Bowles' pre-makeover layered haircut; Madonna's cone-bra corset is described as "sexy". Some chapters read like a directory listing of famous retailers (the "classic lingerie for every taste" page lists famous lingerie manufacturers and their founding history).
This book won't show you how to build a wardrobe, but it will provide an overview of status symbols ("cult" handbags, shoes, etc.) and a short history of craftsmanship (e.g. how bags and silk scarves are made, what is cashmere, what is haute couture) and certain fashion elements (e.g. hosiery). The name dropping (Falke and Revlon are two brands that come up again and again in the examples) and the pretentious tone ("Even if you do not go horseback riding yourself, you need not give up on the equestrian look because your sportswear will include many clothes and accessories from this world") annoyed me, but the pictures are top-notch and illustrate the concepts very well. Though the pictures are lovely, some of the text accompanying them does not really add valuable information, e.g. "Wolford has always been celebrated for its very sophisticated artistic advertisements, some of which have won awards." Perhaps that is nice to know, but how does it help the woman looking to solve clothing problems?
I'm keeping this book for the overviews and historical information it provides on the "timeless basics of the lady's style", but I doubt it will help me to develop my own style.

The Toy and Game Inventor's Handbook

Customer Reviews:
A reality check for all would be toy inventors.......2000-01-12
This is one of those rare business books that explains the business theory of its topic (licensing a new toy or game invention) in a practical setting based on extensive experience of the authors within a specific industry setting. It is laden with up to date examples of licensed inventions and the types of deals struck, the IP protection needed and how to go about getting that protection. It shows you how to "get in the door" with a toy company in an industry where the odds appear to be about 2500 to 1 that your brilliant idea will result in royalty checks in your letterbox. It sets the inventor straight on what the 'gatekeepers' at the toy companies expect of an inventor and describes the all important presentation to the toy company in great detail. I read the book in a single sitting. My only critisism is that it plays down the usefulness of using a toy industry broker which in my experience has proved increadibly useful in getting in the door of the toy companies. A must read for any budding toy inventor.

StartupNation.......2006-11-10
The book was very inspirational and gave a lot of useful information on how to go about starting up a business, expectations, and how to plan and prepare. I liked the entrepreneurial stories woven throughout the book. However, I was expecting to read more about forming a business plan. I know there is not a one size fits all, but I was looking for some actual examples.
College Education in a Book.......2006-11-04
Super book....very informative. I didn't even get to finish it as I had a friend beg it off of me. He loved it as well. Good investment.
Great book - must buy.......2006-03-24
Great book - must buy-- ended up reading most of the book the first few days
Excellent resource.......2006-03-03
I found this book to be the most informative and well written book I have seen on starting and growing a successful business. Many useful tips were included on obtaining a patent and product licensing.
Amazing, Amusing, Inspiring, Pragmatic...Extraordinary!!!!!.......2006-01-31
This book will turbo-charge your start up, save you $$$ in costly mistakes and help you become more successful faster. Startup Nation is extremely useful, informative and entertaining. I wish I would have read it prior to launching my own international consulting practice six years ago. Since I have a Masters in HR from Cornell, and have studied global leadership at INSEAD and Babson, I didn't think I'd learn much from this book - but I did. Rich has that rare gift of being hilarious and insightful, accomplished and disarming, curious and wise. (even though I don't listen to a.m. radio, I'm thinking of tuning in to the Start up Nation program) Jeff and Rich's partnership enrich this book - their close personal relationship and complementary strengths lend unique and important perspective to working together --Kathy Chiaravalli, Strategic Human Resources

This book shows how John M. Olin's venture philanthrophy assisted in building a movement that has become a leading force in American politics and culture.
Customer Reviews:
A Thrilling Ride.......2006-04-28
This simply stunned me. It's as much an eye-opening experience I've had in a 3-4 years. An amazing journey - some new ground and some old, but all seen in a totally new light.
Those who have followed the development of public policy intellectual thought over the past 2 decades are will recognize the supporting cast here: Allan Bloom, Tod Lindberg, John Chubb, Irving Kristol - and organizations - American Enterprise Institute, National Association of Scholars, Collegiate Network, American Council of Trustees and Alumni,....
One originally sees these and appreciates the struggles of the founders of these groups, the efforts, the results; one knows that the participants from like-minded organizations move in intersecting circles and meet each other in philosophical agreement.
Yet it had never even occurred to me that all could be tied together so in a common bond of support through a single funder, via a dedicated team that methodically sought out and empowered each and all.
And then the amazing story of Law and Economics, a discipline which I'd never heard named before (nor, probably, had my MBA professors). And yet, there it built up and spread across the country, providing a cutting edge of learned thought. Many of us think often of the Law's impact on our economics in the US - especially via a National minimum wage (which skews everyone's views of fair, localized, work-appropriate compensation). But the story of systematically introducing economics into our wayward law schools was a tale worthy of Tom Clancy!
This truly was astounding work the Olin Board and Staff were engaged in.
This spring brings much commentary from Francis Fukuyama on the war. Miller reveals that it was the John M. Olin Foundation which sponsored the orignial debates and publications to give Fukuyama fame.
I must say, I finished the book jealous of the Olin staff. What great fun to work with such intellectual diversity and excellence. Miller captured the excitement of the period well.
This was simply an awesome romp through the wonder-filled growing years of the counter-intelligentsia, and inspired a deep appreciation of the vision, focus, and commitment of John Olin and partners.
Great book for budding philanthropists.......2005-11-18
I stumbled across this book from an article in Townhall.com called "Muscular Philanthropy: Tough Love & The John M. Olin Foundation" [...] and I was intrigued. The article outlined the reasons behind the success of the Olin Foundation even though the Leftie foundations outgun everyon on the Right by 10 to 1. The book doesn't organize the material in the same way the article did, but it give a deeper understanding of some of the day to day decision making at the Olin Foundation. It is obvious the whole place functioned as an organic team. Everyone interested in philanthropy, or in running a nonprofit that depends on foundations for money, should read this book and the complementary article -- even the Leftie foundations. But they won't be able to copy the qualities that made the Olin foundation so great because foundation people on the Left are too ideologically driven to adhere to the principled philanthropy strategies outlined in this book and in the article.

Book Description
The Fighting Fifth Marines is the USMC’s most decorated regiment. Its list of honors is long and memorable, encompassing France in World War I, Nicaragua during the Banana Wars, the Pacific theater in World War II, the Korean War, and every campaign since, including five years of combat in Vietnam and the liberation of Kuwait. 5th Marine veteran and Marine Corps historian Ronald J. Brown has written a sweeping, engaging history of this dedicated and distinguished American regiment.
Notable engagements in Okinawa, the Pusan Perimeter, Chosin, and the Persian Gulf dot the heroic lineage of the Fifth Marines. Fighting Fifth alumnus Red Mike Edson won the Medal of Honor at Guadalcanal. Lew Walt earned three Navy Crosses over the course of three wars with the 5th Marines. James Webb became one of the Vietnam War’s most decorated junior officers as a 5th Marine platoon commander and later became secretary of the navy. The regiment fought and won hundreds of unknown battles—anonymous warriors toiling without praise in peacetime and silently sacrificing their personal well-being in far-flung lands during war. These men of the Fifth Marine Regiment are owed an immense debt of gratitude by the nation. A Few Good Men is a fitting tribute to their patriotic service.

Information Correction.......2001-11-28
The Library Journal review of A Few Good Men incorrectly cites the lack of an index. There is, in fact, a twenty-eight page index that lists more than one thousand entries to include all names, units, and significant battle sites mentioned in the text. Aircraft, equipment, named operations, and weapons are also categorized.
Book Description
Like a newly discovered treasure map offering a path to buried riches, Foxes in the Henhouse is a hard-hitting political blueprint for how the Democrats can win again in the South and rural America. The authors document the Republicans' rise in the South and Midwest, expose the hypocrisy that marked their ascent, and offer a take-no-prisoners plan to kick them out.
The authors know of what they speak. "Rural strategists" Steve Jarding and Dave "Mudcat" Saunders are famous for securing Democratic victories in places they shouldn't have -- most notably in Mark Warner's successful run for governor of Virginia, a campaign that wasn't afraid to use bluegrass concerts and NASCAR to get the message out.
When George W. Bush swept the South clean in 2004, it was the final insult to Jarding and Saunders, two self-proclaimed "bubbas" on a mission to convince their fellow southerners and rural Americans that the GOP's claim of representing "values," patriotism, the sportsmen, and fiscal conservatism is a disastrous farce. In addition to exposing the lies behind the gradual Republican invasion of the hinterland that began in the 1960s, they offer some surprisingly simple strategies for Democrats to capture each of these issues. Among other things, Jarding and Saunders urge Democrats to
Quit turning their noses up at the culture of rural America and talk to people where they live
Learn how to count when going after votes
Show some passion and retaliate when Republicans assassinate their characters
Packed with meticulous and shocking research findings; blunt, laugh-out-loud language; and merciless assaults on George W. Bush, Tom DeLay, Bill O'Reilly, and plenty of other right-wing charlatans, Foxes in the Henhouse is a must-read and will be one of the most talked-about books of the year and for election cycles to come.

Good potential but missed in the delivery.......2006-08-12
I started reading this book with high hopes and expectations and finished it feeling less than satisfied. While the authors presented interesting theories as to how the Democratic Party could make advances in the mostly Republican-held South and Midwest, the number of successful examples they presented were few. They seemed to revolve solely around their participation in the election of Mark Warner for governor of Virginia. So would these proposed tactics work in other states? I think the jury is still out.
What I found more disturbing about the book was the blatant hostility and name-calling the authors decided to include in their text. Their interesting ideas get lost in between the lines of equating the GOP with Satan. At times I felt as though I was reading a book by a Democratic Ann Coulter. I really was expecting a better product than what I read.
Good job, but situation is probably hopeless........2006-07-12
This book is a well-written and well-meaning polemic blasting the disastrous stewardship of this great country by Dubya and Company. It even offers a blueprint showing how to regain dominance in red-state America. While it's true that the Democrats have blown some decent opportunities to refute the never-ending barrage of deceitful conservative bombast in the political arena, I think they've got an uphill battle no matter what roadmap they choose to follow. Because if somebody who makes $25,000 a year and lives in a double-wide cannot connect his declining fortunes to the iron grip the Republicans have on virtually every important sphere of government in this country, I don't think Democrats, or any other thinking person with a brain, can do much to understand his "culture." Coming from a family of Southerners, I can tell you that many people in the South still wallow in the ignorance and bigotry sewn by their forefathers. Exploiting ignorance and bigotry is the Republican's stock-in-trade, dating back to their '80s-era "Here come Willie Horton and the Welfare Queens!" to today's "Here come those scary gays--they're gonna burn your bibles and turn your kids into freaks!" You don't have to be an Einstein to see through the Republican's ploy, but it's easy to fall for such tripe if you let your brain be ruled by irrational fear and ancient prejudices. Ultimately, red-state America will fall into the hole it thinks it is digging for the people it perceives as its social and cultural enemies.
James Carville does it better.......2006-07-07
There's no lack of books being written to tell the Democrats how to return to power in Washington and elsewhere. Some are quite clear-headed and factual - I particularly like David Brock. Others are a bit more like the Baptist preacher waving his arms trying to fire up the crowd and raise them to their feet - but without really giving them any solid food to chew on.
Unfortunately, this is one of the latter. The authors are obviously extremely passionate. But after going through this book, it is obvious their emotions have gotten the best of them.
The book is intended as a blueprint to recapture the Southern vote following the Republican sweep in Nov 2004. But frankly, I found the reference to them as "Bubba" as terrible word choice. It is about as complimentary as calling a black man a "homeboy." I don't know a single Southerner that calls himself that.
And while the book goes to great lengths to distinguish between Bubba (he votes) and "rednecks" (he doesn't), the TONE of the discussion makes it clear the authors don't think very highly of either.
The book comes across like an elitist thumbing his nose at the hillbilly hoi polloi, rolling his eyes at their ignorance and checking his watch in anticipation of his return to "real" civilization.
The authors, of course, insist their advice will work. Want the the Southern vote? Go to a NASCAR race! Whoopee, they'll love you for that!
Over and over, the book validates itself by saying essentially "It worked for Mark Warner in Virginia, didn't it?" But I noticed Warner was pretty much the ONLY example ever given, which makes one wonder if Warner was really following a plan or just being himself (probably the most effective campaign plan of all, by the way).
The fact is, Southern voters may not be cognac-sipping, Prada-wearing, Yale grads, but they WILL know when they're being talked down to. And as one of the "uneducated" hoi polloi, I clearly felt like this author was dumbing himself down on purpose to win me over.
The authors basically sound like the stereotyped Democrat: Bush stole the election, the Iraq war is based on lies, Kerry is a war hero, yada yada. Do the authors really think people will vote for a broken record? Ideas win elections, not accusations.
I noticed Amazon.com was offering a discount if this book was purchased with one by Carville. I think I know why.
A Must Read.......2006-06-17
Provides an excellect look at what the problems the south is really facing, and how much of a possibility there is that the Democrats can win back the South. For anybody who is intrested in the problems facing Rural America.
Never mentions Saddam Hussein's terrible crimes against humanity.......2006-05-12
Like how the Iraqi dictator (officially former president) killed 182,000 kurds in just one year. These and other important facts are useful in deciding how right Dubya was to take Saddam down.
I say Bush was very right!
Also this book is constantly harping on the fact that John Kerry served in the US Armed forces in VietNam during the VietNam War and Dubya served only stateside during that same conflict as if this all makes Kerry necessarily a better leader for the US during the war. In 1917 the USA was successfully led into World War One by President Woodrow Wilson who had no military experience at all. George W. Bush was more personally military than Wilson the former can lead the US successfully into war!
