Customer Reviews:
A beautiful book.......2002-07-17
The photography and the text of this book has been described in other reviews, but I want to add that this is now one of the most beautiful books that I own. The typesetting is flawless, the paper is of a much higher weight than I have seen in other monographs, and, of course, the reproductions are class. These points are magnified by the sheer size of the book-- check the dimensions given in the details above. The book is a work of art.
"The Meaning of the Idea Photography" -- Alfred Stieglitz.......2000-12-16
This book clearly deserves many more than five stars. It is one of the most remarkable expressions about and by an artist in any genre that I have ever seen.
Before going further, let me caution those who are offended by all forms of nudity that this book contains many female nudes. These are all tastefully done, and will not offend those who look with a desire to see the essence of beauty.
Alfred Stieglitz was a seminal figure in 20th century art. One of the foremost photographers in the century, he also helped other photographers define what the aesthetic means in photography. He also was a champion for many of the best known photographers, and seriously boosted their careers. In painting, he was an early advocate of important 20th century artists like Arthur Dove and Georgia O'Keeffe. In addition, he published two influential journals about photography, and exhibited art in his famous gallery in New York. Clearly, though, photography was his first love. "I have all but killed myself for Photography."
This book focuses on his central vision of photography ("search for objective truth and pure form") which increasingly was about "antiphotographs" or images that move beyond simple representation. This concept is examined both in 73 of his best images and through numerous excerpts from his voluminous writings on the subject (over 200 essays).
This book is based on the famous 1983 show of Stieglitz's work, and has been reproduced with amazing care and quality. The images are produced in tritone to give more texture and detail. The paper is of archival quality. Most people's diplomas are not on paper this good or this thick. There is a luxurious feeling to just hold the pages.
The 73 images were selected by Ms. O'Keeffe, Juan Hamilton (her friend and assistant), and curator Sarah Grenough from approximately 1600 images in the collection of the National Gallery of Art. Ms. Grenough selected the writings to be used, and wrote the wonderful introduction.
From looking at these remarkable images, I came away with the impression that Stieglitz was at his best (for my taste) when he was doing portraits, abstractions, and cityscapes. Those subjects seemed to allow him to strip away the unessential better than the others he used. My favorite images in the book are:
Sun Rays -- Paula, Berlin, 1889
From the Back-Window -- 291, 1915 Self-Portrait, 1907
Marie Rapp, 1916
Arthur G. Dove, 1911-1912
Charles Demuth, 1915
Hodge Kirnon, 1917
Marcel Duchamp, 1923
Georgia O'Keeffe, 1918 (3)
Margaret Treadwell, 1921
Waldo Frank, 1920
Dancing Trees, 1922
Music -- A Sequence of Ten Cloud Photographs, VIII, 1922
Equivalent, 1931
His writings are as rewarding as his photographs. I was particularly interested in his ideas about how humans make progress. "Progress has been accomplished only by reason of the fanatical enthusiasm of the revolutionist . . . ." "Experts . . . are the result of hard work."
After you have finished enjoying this astonishingly revealing volume, I suggest that you think about how you like to express truth and beauty in your life. How can you be more direct and simple in this expression?
Be sure to live a life of "constant experimenting" like Stieglitz did!
Wonderful collection of his writing and photographs.......2000-01-15
This is far more than a picture book; it contains 73 high-quality plates and its real treasures can be found is the twenty page introduction and the fifty pages of selections from his writings about his work and views on photography. As a full time artist, I found this book to be both rich and inspiring. If you have lost sight of why you shoot pictures, try this as a reminder of clearer moments.

JACKIE? O NO! WHAT A TERRIBLE FIT THIS TOME IS.......2002-09-29
O! Can't poor Jackie O ever finally rest in peace? Now comes author Kathleen Caughwell-Varda's photo-packed coffeetable book that spends too many pages "looking" for the women who, like Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis, broke barriers and influenced their eras, from the 1800s to the present. The relatively unknown are here (Julia Gardiner Tyler, Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte) as well as the essentials (Crawford, Swanson, Kelly.) Yawning yet? Save the money and go buy a pillbox hat.
fascinating & informative.......2000-04-19
Ms.Varda's book is one of the most beautiful books on fashion I've ever beheld. The essays on women, from Betsy Bonaparte to Alice Roosevelt, are fascinating and elegantly written. The illustrations are gorgeous(full-page facsimiles of paintings, wonderful photographs). This would make a fantastic gift for anyone interested in women's studies, as well as fashion.
A Veritable Plethora of Photographic Progression.......2000-04-18
After reading this book, I feel that I have a better understanding of the complexities surrounding the female icon, whether it be modern, victorian, or beyond. Craughwell-Varda tapped into a well that until now, I did not appreciate. A wonderful book, with spectacular illustrations.
Hip look at the history of chic in the U.S........2000-03-30
Using glamorous photos, paintings, letters and anecdotes, Craughwell-Varda has turned out a winner of a book on American fashion icons: Jackie, Dolley Madison, the Duchess of Windsor. The author deftly mixes juicy details-Julia Gardener Tyler was a shopaholic-with intellectual discourse on how the way these women dressed changed politics, movies and fashion. A great gift for your favorite fashionista, and a coffee-table book that shows brains as well as beauties.

HUGE store of information.......2007-09-04
This book has it all, from dance steps to instructions on how to successfully teach social dance. It has been a huge help and resource to me as I prepare my teaching curriculum for the year.
A great resource book for physical educaion teachers.......2000-03-20
If you want to teach your class something about partner, folk, social, contra, and ballroom dance, it is here. This book covers everything from A to Z. It even gives you a glossary just in case you did not know some of those square dance calls. And, its many indexes and other additions at the back of the book are fabulous to help you plan and find all kind of relevant material. I wonder what happened to Ms. Pitman and Ms. Walker, co-authors of earlier editons. Yes, I have used Dance A While for years. It was recommended to me in college during the 60's. I lost it and am so happy to see it is still in print. Because, what ever other books I looked at when I needed information never came close to providing what I needed to find out. Thank you Jane Harris for updating and improving a great book.
A great book for dance teachers.......1999-02-05
This is the best book I used for learning how to teach dancing. It contains a good selection of simple dances which are suitable for novice dancers, and provides detailed dance descriptions and good advice for the teacher. The only drawback is that it doesn't come with music, so you have to track down a suitable recording for each dance. I have used this book for teaching recreational folk dance groups and school classes, and find it to be an excellent resource.

eBay Consignment guide.......2007-06-14
Very good guide on what "to do" and "not to do" in starting the eBay consignment business. The author speaks from his own experience which I have found is the best way to learn.
Another Great book that stays close by on my shelf for reference
Consignment and eBay can work together.......2007-05-29
A good overview on a patient use of eBay. This works well establishing long-term relationships with regular customers. Consignment is also an entry for those individuals not wanting to be sales people but creates them into one comfortably. I recommend it as a part of your library. Try it for knowledge of another way to source your business.
Extremely helpful!.......2007-03-20
This book gives you all that you really need to know about running an ebay business including pitfalls and things to be aware of that you normally would have to learn the hard way. It is definately worth every penny I paid for it!!
A must have resource for this business........2006-12-05
Like many or most who have read this book, I was going through the investigative process of either starting or investing in an eBay consignment business. This book has a lot of useful ideas and is very practical. No eBay consignment business should be without it, as it will pay for itself many times over.
Great book.......2006-08-14
This is a great book with tons of info to get you started. It is so easy to read and written well. I was hanging on every word and re-reading it to soak it all up. I actually think there could have been more info. I have not ventured onto his website yet. That might be my answer for the additional info I need. I think he gave you all the basics, his opinion and his experience. And then not to bore people he gives you resources to find more info. The sample forms in the back and great. I would definitely recommend this book.
Book Description
A brutal and honest account of being a woman among men in the United States Army.
"A woman soldier has to toughen herself up" writes Kayla Williams in this fiercely honest account of what it's like to be part of the female 15% of today's Army. "Not just for the enemy, for battle, for death. I mean to toughen herself to spend months awash in a sea of nervy, hyped-up guys
."
By turns irreverent, vulnerable, angry, and humane, Williams describes what it's like for a young woman to be surrounded by an ocean of testosterone, respected for her skills and qualifications, but treated variously as a soldier, a sister, a mother, a bitch, and a slut.
During her five years of serviceincluding a year of deployment to Iraq during and after the invasionWilliams and her female peers navigate both extreme physical danger and emotional minefields. As a specialist in Military Intelligence, fluent in Arabic language skills, Williams finds herself at the forefront of the troops' interaction with local people. Brave and patriotic, with a strong sense of duty to her country and her fellow soldiers, she is unafraid to level complaints and criticism against the inefficiencies and errors of the militarysketching a blunt portrait, inspired by Ayn Rand, of the U.S. Army as "a vast communist institution."
Taking us from Baghdad to Mosul to a remote mountainous outpost on the Syrian border, Williams demonstrates a keen eye for the complexity of the U.S. military's evolving and ultimately deteriorating relations with the Iraqis. Before she leaves the country, she witnesses death up close and sees soldiers cross the line in the handling of prisoners.
Through it allthe violence, boredom, and fear as well as the light-hearted moments of humor, comraderie, and flirtationKayla Williams brings home with vivid intensity and empathy what it is like for a woman soldier to serve her country today. 8 pages of photographs.
Customer Reviews:
This could have been about me.......2007-07-30
I picked this book up a year after my own deployment and could not put it down. Instead, as soon as I was finished writing it, I started back at the beginning and read it again straight through.
I've read some of the reviews here, ranging from positive to negative. I gave it 5 stars... because it's honest. I am a female enlisted MI soldier, familiar with a lot of the things she talked about in the book. I have not finished college, but other than that I have very much in common with the author. I spent my deployment battling the same issues, different faces. The chapter about being a bitch or a slut was dead on. The comments about incompetency also were dead on. The pages describing her pot-deployment life could have been writte by me or my friends. For those who think she was just criticizing and should have stepped up... what do you think it's like to be a female E-4 or E-5? Even if you want to step up, more often than not you are shut down. In my own deployment, I went through so many of these same emotions and frustrations. I love and hate the military too, although I ended up re-enlisting. If the book pissed you off, it might be because you don't want to hear what this is like or perhaps you have not been deployed and still believe in the system's greatness. This book is exactly what it's like with no excuses. This book is raw and real. I felt like I was back in the desert re-living it all when I read this.
Before I was deployed, I probably would have thought this book was so-so. That was before I went to war and went through this myself. She loves and hates the Army... I used to believe in the rightness and goodness of the Army. Having gone through deep disappointments in the system of my own, I can honestly say that I still love the Army despite it all. That's the feeling I got from this author; she nailed my views of the military dead on. No matter what she gained or lost, she is glad she did it. I too, still love the Army after it all. Although she is brutally honest about the failings of our military, I still get a sense of triumph from the book.
If you want a feel good book about the righteousness of the US Army, don't read this. If you want to know what it's like to be young and female in the US army, this is it. When I read a book and come across a line that I particularly catches my eye, I underline it. I couldn't stop underlining in this book. I saw myself and my friends in these pages, and have given this book to a number of my female soldier friends who have been deployed.
Thank you for writing this book. This is the only book I've come across that tells our story.
Patchy but worth reading.......2007-06-27
This book really needs some good editing as at times we are left wanting more as ideas are left hanging. Still Williams does provide some excellent insights into what life was like in Iraq. It's very candid and she doesn't always come across as a likeable character. If you are interested in first hand accounts of women's service in the Army this book is definitely worth reading.
My First Female OIF Read.......2007-06-16
If you want to understand what it is like for a woman to be serving in Iraq, I would reccommend this. I served in an all male unit overseas recently, but had female friends from other units. What she says parallels what I heard from my friends and what I experienced with women overseas. Bitch or slut. That is all there are. Pass this along to any one who is thinking about joining, and make sure they have a tough skin. The military can be very good in building a lot of positive traits, but there are some drawbacks. It isn't always easy for a woman in the service.
Terrible.......2007-06-03
I bought this book out of pure curiosity, being in the same division the author was in. I found the book a terrible show of women in the military. The book says 'Young and Female' The author was in her late twenties when she joined. I knew girls who where 17-18 when they joined. She seemed have no real desire to be in the Army. I feel that the author wrote the book to mearly get attention from the press, much like Jessica Lynch. I am amshamed to see her get attention from being a soldier when so many others deserve it more.
Mint Condition.......2007-06-01
I bought this book for my daughter. It arrived quickly and in excellent shape. She loved the book....
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2005-06-29
This is indeed the superior history of the Battle of New Orleans and is especially valuable for the analysis of the
political stakes. In short, the British had every intention of adding this city to their collection of overseas naval bases (which
eventually included Gibraltar, Capetown, Hong Kong and a failed
attempt at Toulon) and had worded the peace treaty to permit this, had they succeeded in its capture. The modern claim that the battle was meaningless because it took place in the month after the signing of the treaty, is not correct.
Good Analysis of War of 1812 AND Battle of New Orleans.......2004-08-16
To win the battle, but lose the war is an apt cliche for the Americans regarding the Battle of New Orleans and the War of 1812. Despite the title, this book is about more than the Battle of New Orleans and spends significant time discussing the causes of the War of 1812, the major battles of the war and the peace negotiations. (In fact, Reilly doesn't begin to address the Battle of New Orleans until page 171 in a book of 371 pages of text.) The book does several things well. It assesses dispassionately the role of military and political leadership in crucial events and battles of the War. The essential role of generalship and statesmanship in these affairs is one of the sub-themes of the work. Reilly demonstrates well the crucial relationship between the events and strategies of the War of 1812 and the Napoleonic Wars of Europe. Unlike many military histories, this book demonstrates why particular tactics were or were not sensible. Finally, it debunks legends and sometimes conventional wisdom about the war and battle with the use of the contemporary papers, diaries and court-martial records.

They Think You're Stupid Why Democrats Lost Your Vote and What Republicans Must Do to Keep It
Herman Cain
Foreword by Zell Miller
Do the scare tactics, deceptions and distortions of politics frustrate you? Have you grown cynical about the lack of real-issue leadership in Washington? Do you often feel as if politicians are talking down to youthat they think you're stupid? Well, that is how politics-as-usual makes Herman Cain feel.
In They Think You're Stupid, Herman Cain offers an action plan to help the marginalized voter find a true voice in the political process, while at the same time offering political party leaders an avenue back to the heart of American democracythe voters. Cain identifies a new voter phenomenon occurring across the nation. Newly registered voters, young African-Americans, unhappy Democrats, and uncommitted Republicans are refusing to identify strongly with either political party. Cain provides insightful analysis of the factors that have led to what he terms the "politically homeless." While Democrats are on the road to irrelevancy, Cain believes that Republicans have an opportunity to capture the loyalty of this growing segment of America.
Herman Cain pinpoints a wide range of issues where he believes voters are unifiedfrom the threat of terrorism to "economic slavery." He argues that the need to see real results around these issues can motivate the "politically homeless" to become more engaged in the political process, and by their very presence, transform policies and politics in Washington.
Former senator Zell Miller sees Cain's message as vital for political parties as they approach new elections, "Party leaders would do well to listen to him, all party leaders. Cain is on to something very important for our future. The kind of democracy we have enjoyed for more than two hundred years won't survive voter apathy. When the voters' trust is lost, so is their support. To their own demise, many politicians play the politics as usual game and continue to think of voters as mindless and willing to follow anyone because of a few well-placed jabs and sound bites. Candidates from either party who are more concerned with how the party fares will find themselves with plenty of free time on their hands."
From the perspective of a successful businessman, They Think You're Stupid offers hope for the disenfranchised voter and common-sense advice to the Republican Party. Cain explains, "The Republicans have a unique opportunity to dominate the political landscape for decades if they do a better job of reaching out to the party outsiders with results, rather than waiting for outsiders to reach in." Cain sees a new day in American politics, and that day must include a voice for the "politically homeless."
Customer Reviews:
Lacking his usual charisma.......2006-03-09
Herman Cain brings up some of the most important issues that both political parties seem to be dodging- social security, Medicare and income taxes. His background in business gives him a different perspective on these issues, and his suggestions are very practical and common sense. It is always such a treat to hear him on the radio, but this book is lacking the charm and charisma that he radiates. While the message is good, the book tends to be repetitive to the point that I began to get bored.
Herman Cain for President!.......2006-01-13
I just ordered this book after hearing Herman Cain on The Neal Boortz Show. But even before I've read it, I can attest that it is excellent. Because Herman Cain's philosophy and attitude are geared toward achievement and the relentless pursuit of excellence. As a successful businessman and human being, Herman Cain displays all the traits of a great leader. We can only hope that he will someday achieve high office in America... Go Fair Tax!
Britt Gillette
Author of 'The Dittohead's Guide to Adult Beverages'
And they're not wrong.......2005-09-19
What else would you call people who consistently vote against their own interests? If it isn't "crazy" then it has to be "stupid". The idea that the Republican Party is capable of offering anything better is just more of the same. Take a look at the last six years of lies, cheating, thievery and bald-faced pandering, from Iraq to Tom DeLay's ethics committee to Schiavo to Katrina. If you're willing to believe Mr. Cain's thesis in the face of that, guess who else the adjective applies to?
Herman Cain makes sense.......2005-08-13
I heard Herman Cain on Michael Medved's national radio show. I also seen Herman Cain in his U.S Senate political ads. Herman Cain is an extremely brilliant man, and a selfmade millionaire. He's very down to earth and he just makes sense. It's refreshing that some Americans of African decent are free thinkers, and not a slave to the democrat ideology like most are.
They do think we're stupid. BUT . . ........2005-07-23
a very readable book with many good ideas. Health savings account, Thrift savings to replace SS, etc. Unfortunately when the author speaks about a national sales tax he does not seem to be cognizant of a tiny problem with his idea. Taxation is used to control people, that's where 'deductions' and special interest come from. A sales tax will have the same problems. Special Interest and others will use a sales tax to eliminate things they don't like by taxing them out of existance or reducing tax on things they approve of. The beef board will fight to remove tax on meat while PeTA will loby to tax beef out of range of any but the very rich. The same thing will happen with SUV's, books, churches, guns, abortion, etc. I'd love to see reform of the tax code, but a national sales tax simply moves the battle from money you earn to money you spend. At least now I can spend what little I get to keep w/o big brother looking over my shoulder.
Good book in may respects and well worth the money.
