    Book Description

The Princeton University Art Museum’s collection of American drawings and watercolors is impressive in both scope and quality, providing a comprehensive overview of the nation’s artistic traditions. This lavishly illustrated book highlights seventy-seven master drawings and watercolors chosen from the museum’s extensive collection. The selections, which range from the eighteenth century to the present, are by such eminent American artists as Benjamin West, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Mary Cassatt, Andrew Wyeth, Georgia O’Keeffe, Lee Bontecou, and Tom Wesselmann. A group of outstanding works by Hudson River School and Ash Can artists also distinguishes the collection.

Each of the selected drawings and watercolors is reproduced in full color and is accompanied by an in-depth catalogue entry. The book also features an introduction by John Wilmerding describing Princeton’s history of collecting American art, as well as an essay by Kathleen A. Foster on the historiography of American drawings and watercolors. A useful checklist of the Museum’s entire collection of over 1,300 American drawings and watercolors, selectively illustrated in color, concludes the book.

This beautiful and informative volume clearly demonstrates that the holdings of the Princeton University Art Museum represent an extraordinary resource for students, scholars, and those with a love of American art and art history.

    Book Description

Bill Travilla became a Hollywood star in his own right, thanks in large part to his premier client, actress Marilyn Monroe. Best known for designing Monroe's costumes in eight films--including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire--Travilla also lit up the silver screen with designs for Tom Mix, Ann Sheridan, Errol Flynn, Joan Crawford, Jane Russell, Paul Newman, and Joanne Woodward, among others. When the golden era of Hollywood ended, Travilla focused on running his own couture-quality business. He also found time to free-lance for television epics such as Evita, The Thorn Birds, and Dallas. One Oscar and several Emmys later, it's easy to recognize the legacy of this outstanding designer. Showcased here are many of Travilla's original sketches for the stars, along with fascinating "costume check" and publicity photos. His rise from child art prodigy to celebrated designer is chronicled, painting a wonderful portrait of his rich contributions to the motion picture, television, and fashion industries. This beautiful book will be loved by all movie buffs, Monroe fans, Hollywood collectors, fashion historians, and students of costume design.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully presented!.......2007-07-04

This is another well-designed, well-presented book from Schiffer, known for its volumes appealing to collectors of various types of memorabilia. (I also own _Harrison Fisher: Defining The American Beauty_ and Kristina Harris' _Victorian and Edwardian Fashion for Women_ from the same publisher, both high-quality paperbacks.) Travilla may not be as instantly recognizable a name as Edith Head, Adrian or Helen Rose in the field of movie costume design, but his costumes are very definitely ones the viewer will remember. That sexy white dress Marilyn Monroe wore in her most iconic scene, in "The Seven Year Itch"? That's a Travilla design, and his sketch for the outfit graces the dust jacket of the book. The book is full of artwork, much of it in full-page format; photographs, both color and black-and-white, and sketches of notable designs. Travilla's most famous (and, judging from his remarks, his favorite) client, was Marilyn Monroe, but he designed outfits for many other actresses - and a few actors - from the 1940's through the 1980's, starting with Ann Sheridan (whom he became so close to that he nicknamed her "Aunt Annie") and going on to Emma Samms. This book isn't cheap new or used, but take that as a sign of its quality and desirability and do make the investment if you're interested in this field!

Travilla became a Hollywood star thanks in large part to his client Marilyn Monroe, gaining fame for his design of her costumes - but his art graced many familiar forms, and Hollywood Costume Design By Travilla provides an excellent display of his original sketches and creations. Monroe fans and Hollywood fans alike will relish this display, lavish with color reproductions of Travilla's art.

This book is a concise guide to real estate exchange. Yes, it is heavily geared towards legal codes and tax codes, but that's what makes this a great reference book. If you're bored with reading "fluffy" books about all the advantages of RE exchange and want to get to the meat and potatoes of the issue, get this book. Zuckerman and Stone are experienced professionals and know the IRC like the back of their hand. It is not a book to read in one day, to be sure, but it is an in depth view of the world of exchanges and it would do you good to have a copy.

        5 out of 5 stars Intermediate Goldmine.......2004-01-02

This book is loaded with useful information for the slightly above average player but probably has to much jargon for the beginner.
You may not care for all the mnemonics i.e the momory "keys" but quite a few are very useful. Mnemonics are not always used by the author, sometimes only a catchy phase provides the memory aid.
In structuree - the situation is introduced in the heading. Usually a very condensed "condition" is presented. Next comes a tool and/or a memory aid to handle it. Each situation is quickly dealt with. Quite a few pages present more than one idea.
Obviously the problem or tool is not always fully explained, you may have to go to other sources for that. However, the tools just keep coming and coming. It's also a nice introduction to a few advanced concepts.
The best investment in a bride book that I ever made. A geat learning tool. It even has a table of contents and an index (far above many bridge books).

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the price.......2007-09-13

Any real estate author that endorses/references the likes of Robert Allen, Robert Kiyosaki, Mark V. Hansen, and other "get rich easy" infomercial guru is suspect of his/her own real estate achievement and perspective. The above mentioned names has yet to show their net worth (primarily in real estate, if any). Infomercial gurus are mostly out to sell books and seminars, instead of enhancing financial worth and improving lives of people they affect. This book presents common get rich quick concepts and not worth the money I paid.

Go to John T. Reed.com for a more serious real estate resource and advice. Do not spend your hard earned dollar on this book; much more, follow your real estate pursuits based from these authors' advice.

Also, the title for this 2006 publication is misleading as a million $ in now a days real estate is easily achievable in any multi unit property, even duplex, in a well suited market driven location. Do not be fooled nor fool yourselves, real estate is not about motivation of any party but a complex numbers and economic game. Its a multi factor driven commodity, not covered here by both authors.

Again, do not waste your penny, make the same mistake I made in buying this title, and consider my recommendation above.

1 out of 5 stars Gilad Does not know what he is talking about.......2006-08-26

Evidently my first try at a review was too negative for Amazon. I'll try to be nicer this time.

Gilad has no clue what he is talking about throughout much of the book. When he does say useful things he is vague and the advice is fairly obvious. It is not rocket science to try to find neighborhoods on the up and up. Investigating neighborhoods is not hard--it just takes a lot of effort.

In many areas, Gilad is just plain wrong. He claims that depreciation is something invented by the government to make owning property more attractive. Any competent accountant or financial analyst can tell you that is a lie. While the time period of depreciation (27.5 years) for residential property is rather arbitrary, depreciation is the real (albeit non-cash) cost of wear-and-tear on the property.

Also, Gilad's whole track record occured in a rising property market. If he had done what he did to make his first million starting today or in a previous down market he likely would have ended up bankrupt due to the risky nature of his financing.

5 out of 5 stars Great and down to earth.......2006-08-11

It makes sense to use your personal knowledge, skills, hobbies and profession and apply it to real estate buying. Most people try to tell you how to find these homes when you have a personal niche already built into you and your experiences.

Great book! Easy read, simplified methods, packed full of GREAT information. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book of its kind.......2006-02-27

Boaz and Suzanne Gilad have complied one of the most concise, well written, thoroughly informed books on the subject of real estate. It is written in a manner that allows the reader to feel completely comfortable. Never once did I feel like I was in over my head - which has been the case with some other real estate books. Every thing is explained to the utmost detail. The Gilad's teach you how to work the market with out ever giving up what it means to be human and compassionate in today's society. I really have enjoyed this book and will continue to reccommend it to others.

5 out of 5 stars PAY ATTENTION! This Book Could Change Your Life!.......2006-02-23

This book is without question the BEST handbook for a young Real Estate Investor I have seen. The authors have obviously taken great care to lay out, in crystal clear fashion, the concepts needed to begin a career. The many forms of financing, law, types of ownership & management, the players involved, calculating returns, why to buy & not to buy, illustrated through inspirational experiences of their own. These two are doing something very, very right. I keep the book near me as I go about looking for deals. And I will be looking to attend one of their seminars in the immediate future! Thank you both!

Alison Smith's close-knit Catholic family is the very picture of contentment--right up until the day her 18-year-old brother is killed in a car accident. In Name All the Animals, Smith walks readers through the breakdown and breakthroughs of her family in the days and years that follow.

Cleanly written and only occasionally maudlin, this memoir reads like a gritty coming of age novel. Included are all of the pieces one would expect in a book that starts with a death--bereft parents, good samaritan neighbors, even a somewhat rote post-funeral scene back at the house--but Smith manages to throw in a few unexpected curveballs. A sweetly scandalous lesbian experience, a pair of skinny-dipping nuns, and a suspiciously undetected bout of anorexia come together with a quiet but ever-present insurance investigation to create a truly original story.

Written in the same vein as The Lovely Bones or The Dogs of Babel, Smith's story manages to convey the beauty that can be found in coming to terms with grief. Ultimately triumphant, this is a great read for anyone searching for meaning after the loss of a loved one. --Vicky Griffith

            Book Description

A luminous, true story, Name All the Animals is an unparalleled account of grief and secret love: the tale of a family clinging to the memory of a lost child, and of a young woman struggling to define herself in the wake of his loss. As children, siblings Alison and Roy Smith were so close that their mother called them by one name, Alroy. But when Alison was fifteen, she woke one day to learn that Roy, eighteen, was dead.

Heartbreaking but hopeful, this extraordinary memoir explores the after-math of Roy's death: his parents' enduring romance, the faith of a deeply religious community, and the excitement and anguish of Alison's first love -- a taboo relationship that opens up a world beyond the death of her brother.

Ms. Smith invites her readers to experience her coming of age teen years, the same time she traveled through the process of grieving her older brother's death. Such a vulnerable in anyone's life, her family's religion and the loss of her brother tangle into her adolescent stage and threaten to swallow her up. This is a loving look at a very intimate and raw experience.

This is a touching book about the author's experience with grief and loss. Alison had one sibling, her older brother Roy. They were so close as kids, that her mother had one name to refer to both of them - Alroy. When Roy was tragically killed in a car accident at the age of 18, the family's world was turned upside down and would never be the same again. Alison was 15 at the time, and she goes into vivid detail about her family's way of dealing with this. Alison's mother threw herself into chores and hiking, her father spent much of his time praying for Roy's soul, and Alison used to spend her evenings sitting in a backyard fort that she and her brother had made together. She was shielded from the details of her brother's accident, but read the newspaper article about it a year and a half later. When she learned the horrific details, she walked down to the accident site on a rainy night in her bare feet, absolutely devastated. The book also spends a lot of time on Alison's Catholic School experiences, as well as a forbidden love and her emerging sexuality. Overall, this was an excellent book that dug deeply into the grieving experience. I gave it four stars instead of five because a few years ago, Alison's mother died and she never mentioned the details of it. It was simply at the back of the book where she was thanking people. This book touched me, and I would highly recommend it.

            4 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2007-03-19

I really enjoyed this memoir by Alison Smith. I thought she did a wonderful job describing her grief over the death of her older brother and how she dealt with it. I thought she told her story with a strong, clear voice. Her descriptions were very vivid and real. I think part of why I enjoyed this book so much is that Alison Smith and I are about the same age and I could relate to her experience growing up. I didn't realize until I was reading the book that she grew up in Rochester, NY. For me there's always a little bit of an affinity for stories about places I know. Similar chronology and common geography aside I thought this was a great book.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful and Moving.......2007-02-02

Alison Smith read at the West Side YMCA's Writer's Voice on May 14, 2004. This is from my introduction to the event.

Alison Smith's "Name All the Animals" manages a very difficult balancing act. It is, to me, a tri-partite story. The main story of the terrible grief of losing a loved one, the events and impact of a strong religious faith both being practiced, tested and transformed, and the emerging sexual identity of a teenager, all during the period of grief following a great tragedy.

If Alison Smith failed to make any of the three legs of the story stand convincingly, the whole book would've toppled over. And it's to her great credit that she brings out clearly the people in her life, making them completely three-dimensional in their weakness and in their strength. Throughout the book, the most powerful presence is that of her brother, who flits like a ghost around her, yet is more present in many ways than the people left behind to mourn, and those who surround her in her day-to-day life.

Alison Smith makes art out of tragedy, and throughout the book you feel a sense of connectedness to her story that is unforced, and natural, beyond that of the natural empathy one feels when confronted with someone else's sorrow. It's a powerful and moving book.

4 out of 5 stars An intriguing tale of grief's aftermath.......2007-02-01

Growing up, Alison Smith and her brother Roy were so close their mother called them both "Alroy." They had their scuffles, but when it all came down to it, the two were one another's best friends.

Then one morning when Alison is 15, she learns that 18-year-old Roy has been killed in a car accident. All of a sudden, her world is turned upside down. The dynamics within their closeknit family are destroyed forever.

Alison quickly learns that the tragedy also means no one in the community will treat her the same way again. The nuns at her private school essentially let her get away with anything, and the kids she's known her entire life don't know what to say.

Then Terry comes to school, and Alison's thrilled. Not only is Terry an intriguing artist, but she's also someone with whom Alison can have a clean slate.

As time progresses, the two girls become more than just friends. Their secret is exposed, and Alison's teachers and family express their disgust. How *could* she?

This story is a fascinating look at the aftermath of grief; what happens to a person when everything they've ever known is gone? It may be that they become unafraid to let their true desires known...

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best overview of World War II German armor.......1997-07-17

The Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War II covers virtually every combatvehicle produced by Germany from 1929 through 1945. At least 90% of the vehicles are depicted in either photographs (most common) or drawings (for prototypical vehicles).

As a builder of 1/35th scale armor, this book provides an excellent ready reference. An emphasis is placed on the vital statistics of each vehicle including (but not limited to): the number produced, the various designations of the vehicle, the engine, range, armament, ammunition carried, and armor angle and thinckness.

Each mark (or Ausfurung) of each vehicle has its own entry, for example, the Panther is split into entries for the Ausf. D, Ausf. A, Ausf. G, and even the Ausf. F (with the Jagdpanther and Bergenpanther being separate as well). Differences between the models are detailed as well.

While the photographs in this book are not comprehensive enough from which to accurize a kit, the text does not unique features of each vehicle (which can be, in turn, looked for in other photographs).

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interesed in World War II armor, especially anyone who builds armor models.

This book is an authoratative reference listing nearly everything in the German mobile arsenal. I am amazed at the detail. It even has the Leichte Truppenluftschutz Kraftwagen (Kfz 4). Now, who's ever heard of that thing. It has pictures, as well as design, production, field history, and unit markings information on each vehicle. This is a great modeling reference for unusual variants, and the attention to half-tracks and soft-skinned vehicles makes it a gem. The only fault being all the pics are black and white, so it's not much good for camo schemes.

I am a modeler and have found this book to be invaluable to me in it's information, pictures and # of differant vehicles it has. This book should be on the shelf of every military modeler. I am surprised it is out of print. I bought my copy only a year ago.

5 out of 5 stars Exhaustively detailed reference work........1997-08-08

Very authoritative reference with particular strengths being the assignment of proper Wk.No. to models and manufacturers and clear definition of all specific variants and sub-variants. Carries details for not only major panzers, but also half-tracks and wheeled armored cars. Includes large number of experimental and prototype versions and is well illustrated with clear photographs and technical drawings. Excellent reference for anyone interested in WWII armor

A widespread view today identifies the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt as responsible for creating a permanent welfare state in America. Priven and Cloward demonstrate that FDR's social programs created to assist the poor were part of a long line of programs that in fact exercised social control of the chronically poor and the destitute, and that each one has maintained this stratum of society as a constant in an otherwise economically sound society. The authors look back to Colonial times and then on through the FDR administration to circa 1980 (when this book was published) examining each governmental program both on its successes and failures. This is a damning indictment of the results of them all. It uses scholarly methodology to support its message and conclusions. It should be required reading for all public and private entities engaged in social assistance programs at every level, and for the governmental authorities creating and regulating them. I unequivocally recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Welfare as a Government Tool of Control.......2006-03-26

i can pretty much guarantee that after reading this book, one will never quite look at welfare in the same way as before. The main premise of this book is that government provides aid for the poor to control political unrest and to control labor.

The book starts off by tracing the history and development of welfare in western civilization. Prior to the early 16th century, caring for the poor was considered to be primarily the responsibility of the church or of those of the more prosperous who tried to purchase their salvation through almsgiving. Leaving charity to the church meant that few received aid and those not necessarily according to their need. This increased social unrest so governments began to be involved in providing for the poor. This was done for two primary reasons: 1.) To control social order and 2.) To extol the virtue of labor even at the lowest wages by making the treatment of the destitute so punitive and degrading that the no one wants to descend into beggary and pauperism.

The book details such early government programs as workhouses, labor yards, and poor law subsidies whereby parish churches were required to care for the poor in their area.

In the united States, welfare was addressed somewhat differently. Poverty in the U.S. was regarded as the obvious consequence of sloth and sinfulness. Relief was scattered and fragmentary-each township or county provided for its hungry in whatever manner it saw fit-giving of food, incarceration in almshouses, or indentured service. Poor relief was a local, not a state or national responsibility.

During the great Depression, unemployment became so widespread that the government was forced to develop programs to assist the poor and the unemployed. At first the government focused on direct relief, but as imm4ediate needs were satisfied, the government moved on to work relief which, interestingly, was opposed by business leaders because it was felt that government was encroaching on areas that had been primarily reserved for private enterprise.

As conditions stabilized, US policies changed to conform with the earlier view of poverty as being the rsult of sloth and sinfulness. Relief programs excluded able-bodied men. Man-in-the-house rules excluded aid to a mother who was in any way associated with a man, particularly if the man lived in her house. Women and/or children were given aid but at the same time assigned to private entrepreneurs who were told to use them in any way possible.

With the growing mechanization of southern agriculture, blacks migrated into the cities, particularly the northern cities where relief rules were not as restrictive. Four million blacks came to cities in less than three decades-congregated in largest cities in the north-New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Los Angeles, Washington. Industry required an increasingly skilled labor force just as unskilled blacks reached cities in large numbers from the fields of the south, consequently, unemployment rose. Unrest mounted among poor blacks, culminating in the Civil Rights demonstrations of the early 60's.

Then was born the Great society as Democrats realized that blacks were located in states of the most strategic importance in presidential contests. Democrats were losing traditional support in the South, so they needed the support of the northern cities. Service programs were developed for inner city as part of LBJ's "War on Poverty". According to the book, the true objective of the "War on Poverty" was to reach blacks and integrate them into urban political system. Method was to offer federal funds for the ghettoes and to use federal funds to create pressure for reallocation of municipal services.

This book is eminently readable. I was assigned to read it for a college class and did not approach it with much enthusiasm, but I ended up thanking my professor for assigning it to me. Whether or not one buys into the book's overall premise, it certainly stimulates discussion about the overall treatment of poverty in the U.S. interrelationship of government welfare policies, racial politics, and politcal power plays.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get a view of how society has responded to the needs of the poor in history, and how we continue to repond to the needs of the poor today.

5 out of 5 stars A revealing examination of an insidious system.......2004-03-10

Authors Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven blew the cover off the public welfare system with this book over thirty years ago. I have yet to read any satisfactory rebuttal to their theory over the intervening decades. How best to keep the poor poor? How best to placate them? How best to control the labor pool of American society? Not with riot gear and tear gas (although we haven't been above using that). The best way is with money. Just a little, of course.

As the title suggests, the welfare system has played many roles. Certainly, there were good intentions. But Cloward and Piven, as good historians and theoreticians, examined its cumulative effects. Their determination is, in essence, that the American welfare system has served as a stabilizing force--as in retaining the status quo--of that class who relies on it.

I am way oversimplifying the case here: there is a lot more to it.

No matter which side of the fence you're on regarding the welfare system, Cloward and Piven's REGULATING THE POOR has a solid base in history, statistics, and policy-making that makes their thesis unshakeable. Like I said, over thirty years later, no one has even put a dent in it.

4 out of 5 stars For anyone who is not afraid of the REAL TRUTH about Welfare.......2000-03-25

When I first read this book several years ago, it was like learning that there's no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny. It completely shook my sense of social and political reality. It is a completely fact-based, objective, and unbelievably insightful explanation for the economic, and therefore social, realities of this country. It was a true epiphany. Everything finally made sense as the layers of years of schooling and media indoctrination melted away, and the truth about what's really going on in this country became amazingly clear.

If you read this book, you should be ready to give up any common preconceptions on the topic of poverty and the social "welfare" systems. It is only for those who seek the truth out of political reality. Although I recommend it for anyone who is involved in any sort of discussion on the topic.
