This book celebrates more than a decade of collecting by the Metropolitan Museum's Department of Arms and Armor since the reinstallation of its permanent galleries in 1991. The new acquisitions complement and build upon the Museum's encyclopedic collection, which totals more than 14,000 objects from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and North America.

Fifty-eight of the most important recent acquisitions are featured in this volume, including the richly decorated armor and weapons of two French kings, the king of Sweden, and a future king of England, several members of the ruling Medici family of Florence, a hero of the American Revolution, two sultans of Turkey, and the Tokugawa shoguns of Japan. The texts provide insight into the artistic, historical, and technical aspects of this specialized field. Many of these important and intriguing objects are previously unpublished.

In The Tyranny of Elegance, Daniel Purdy examines the coming of bourgeois fashion (Mode) and luxury consumerism (Luxus) to eighteenth-century Germany. The liberation symbolized by Werther's suit was illusory, he explains, as fashion itself quickly became a force for conformity as rigid as the sumptuary laws -- such as clothing ordinances -- of earlier centuries. Purdy examines the extraordinary influence of Frederick Bertuch's Mode Journal, which chronicled in obsessive detail the clothing and decorative trends in London, Paris, and other European capitals. He traces the elite reaction against fashion that followed the example of the king, Frederick the Great, who dressed poorly -- in worn and even dirty clothes -- to separate himself from the francophile fastidiousness typical of absolutist armies. The changing notions of personal appearance that swept Europe at the end of the eighteenth century, Purdy concludes, were more than simply new styles reflecting new political ideologies -- they indicated a fundamental shift in the epistemology of the subject and the body.

If you are interested in learning about Jackie Chan's films this is a good introduction. However, not enough personal data. I have read better accounts of his life. However, not bad.

Nice Guide to Chan's Film Career.......2006-07-06

"The Unauthorized Jackie Chan Encyclopedia" is a nice reference guide to Chan's prolific film career up to the year 2002. The book contains many interesting and obscure entries about Chan's career and the HK film industry in general including: Maggie Cheung, Hwang Jang-Lee, Wille Chan, Ng See-Yuen and the Shaw Brothers Studios.
The Unauthorized also includes Jackie Chan's first English language interview from 1981 and provides a musicography of Jackie's music career. There are also plenty of interesting and rare photos and magazine covers throughout the book. The only negatives are that author John Corcoran does not go into a lot of detail on many of the entries and seems to have aimed the book towards younger readers.

Overall the unauthorized Chan encyclopedia is a nice guide to the world of Jackie Chan and is recommended for die hard Chan fans.

Bedtime stories Consultants read their Children.......2001-10-18

I have the 2nd edition of Block's "Flawless" and find it an essential reference, true to its reputation. Disappointingly in this Companion many of the authors seem to treat the readers as a captive audience - at the level of first year college students. For example - a diatribe on Romeo and Juliet as an illustration of human diversity, or three pages of "my worse experiences" one of which transpired to be freezing on stage and losing the point. These type of chapters annoyed me and distracted me from some of the worthy contributions. So much so that I returned the book to the bookshop and asked for my money back - the first time I have done so in 30 years of buying management books. In my opinion this book is a dud riding on the coat tails of the previous 'flawless' success.

Roadmap to consulting in the 21st century.......2001-06-12

This book deserves to be among the TOP 10 of business books of 2001. If you work as a consultant and want to learn your customers how to fish (in stead of giving them fish), BUY this book! If you have consultants walking around in your organisation, make sure they apply these principles!

After reading this, you'll understand why re-engineering processes fail, why the balanced scorecard isn't "the" solution", why teaching people skills sometimes has no impact, why implementing SAP is so hard and why people in companies are very sceptic if you suggest any of these "popular" solutions. In fact, all these solutions share the same underlying principle: some knowledge and procedures need to be added to the company to "fix" problems. This notion is wrong! Overcoming resistance to change has to do with giving people a chance to participate.

When studying projects of famous consultants and big 5 consulting comapnies, I have often wondered: "Why did the implementation of this project fail?" My first personal lesson was that PEOPLE matter more than methodology and tools. (I have been writing about this for years...).

Next to this first learning, I knew that it's not the consultants that have to bring the solution, it's the persons IN the organisation. And I have been looking for years for solutions to this paradox (being a consultant, that is). SO: methodology IS important: if you use a methodology which will mine the knowledge of the company as a WHOLE, you are the enabler of the change. As a consultant, you do not have to bring the CONTENT, the knowledge of WHAT needs to be changed, but you have to GUIDE the change process, and bring knowledge to the organisation so that they can change themselves. This book is one of the few that will really help you understand which processes are needed for this (many of the 30+ people that helped to write this book have a proven track record in this area).

If you don't know how to put systemic thinking into practice (or you think it's just about designing a solution with the system in mind), and/or if you haven't heard about whole-scale change, apreciative inquiry or the engagement paradigm, this is a good place to start: you will literally discover a new way of consulting, one that lives up to the title of this book and might even really enable "flawless" implementation processes.

And if putting this book into practice isn't flawless: go to the last chapter: Peter Block added a "trouble-shooting guide" that helps you get trough 12 common roadblocks.

This is a beautifully written memoir from the doctor you wish was yours. The book's subtitle perfectly captures the substance of this book: "one doctor's reflections on the oddly intimate encounters between patient and healer." If you've ever wondered what a doctor is thinking as he or she examines patients, here's your chance to eavesdrop.

In story after story, you get a taste of the life's richness -- from the joy of learning a self-diagnosis is not nearly as dire as the actual problem to the tragedy of a beautiful young girl who keeps coming back to the hospital because her boyfriend refuses to admit he's got a STD, from the gripping story of a patient reliving his WWII experience coming upon a concentration camp before it was widely known such camps existed to the mystery of a medical student injuring herself essentially for the attention.

You see it all this richness through the eyes of a doctor who has a poet's sensitivity and fluency with language. Here's an example of the beautiful prose throughout this book: "My stethoscope glides over the surface of the abdomen like a stone skipping over a flexible sheen of water, listening first, not to disturb the delicate organs huddled and hiding below."

The doctor also has a great sense of humor. Here's what happens when the father of one of his hopital staff nurses arrives at this office:

We've got a problem, my reception says.
Yes, I say. He wasn't suppoed to come today.
Not that, she says. He's HMO.
HMO. HMO. Poor bastard. Sick with restrictions.

(I typed out those lines pretty much as they are appear in the book -- the good doctor leaves out lots of the typical punctuation that accompanies dialog, which sometimes makes you wonder who's speaking. But surprisingly the light punctuation style works well overall by helping to seemlessly blend the interior and spoken dialog.)

Doctors face life and death everyday, a vantage point few of us have in our too-busy-to-slow-down lives. And while this book is not a didactic or prescriptive "here's how you should think about life" book, its stories naturally make you think about your own outlook and approach towards living.

The jacket cover says Dr. Watts is a regular commentator on NPR and indeed some of these stories are based on his NPR contributions. Reading them definitely makes me want to search the NPR archives as well as tune in for his next broadcasts.

Maybe i'm a bit biased here, as David's web master, a resident of the same village and an occasional family visitor - i don't think so.

What i do think is that a book which is such an alloy of insight, humor, entertainment and nourishment for the soul is a rare treat.

What can i say? I laughed, i cried, i can't wait to read it again.

And it washed clean away the divide that can seep into our hearts and slightly blur our outlook, subtly separating us from others. A gentle reminder of how much we share.

Be forewarned-in David Watts' new book, "Bedside Manners", you may encounter yourself. Whether cast in the role of the caring physician, the neurotic patient, an idealistic trainee, husband, or father, the sensitive reader can explore a vicarious experience in the stories of David Watts' newest book in a very honest and often revealing way.

Previously published as a poet, Dr. Watts has produced his first prose work with this collection of stories in "Bedside Manners". By his own admission, this native Texan writes: "[S]ometimes you have to go where the horse wants you to go. My horse apparently wanted prose and wanted it to speak of the struggles of doctors and patients."

Dr. Watts distills his stories from moments in the life of a seasoned physician. Some of these stories from medical school and residency training are filled with idealism and hope. Others stem from the work he has done with terminally ill patients, helping them transition to death-each along a unique path.

These tales in turn are juxtaposed against those of patients who are driven to seek care, attention and solace for factitious medical problems. Dr. Watts deftly examines how patient care can influence those personal relationships that practitioners have with their own families-affects which can heal or reveal emotional scars.

In his writings, Dr. Watts masterfully records the feelings that a patient evokes in him during a medical encounter: "A strange sense of frustration, almost impatience, came over me. I wasn't sure why." He speaks of the guilt that inevitably follows. These are feelings known only to practitioners; few will admit to having them, and thankfully patients remain unaware of them.

I found some of these patient encounters to be humorous, some ironic, others heart-breaking or frustrating, some poignant-but all authentic. As I read through these vignettes I sensed a closeness with Dr. Watts and his patients. His writings will evoke a camaraderie among physician readers-a homecoming of sorts. In the busy world of day to day practice, where the human touch is many times displaced by the endless paperwork of medical charts and insurance claim forms, Dr. Watts has found a way to acknowledge these frustrations and continue to be a compassionate physician.

A more rounded picture of Iran.......2006-06-20

The image many people have of Iran is of a nation of fanatical Islamic believers. This book comes to put Iranian society in historical perspective, and emphasize how strong the pre-Islamic Persian culture still is in Iran. As Rubin himself says in an interview in National Review, "Iran's history goes back millennia. It is important to recognize the historical patterns that shape Iranian state and society. We wanted to correct the faulty notion that the Islamic Republic is the natural state of things. Too many books written by academics in the year or two after the Islamic Revolution assumed that the Islamic Revolution represented the natural evolution of Iranian politics. It is now clear that the Revolution was an aberration. This raises the policy question: Should we do anything that helps prolong the system, or will we side with the vast majority of Iranians who hope for change? We can only win if the Iranian people win. And that means not striking any deal which will help preserve the status quo and a theocracy anathema not only to many Iranians, but also to so many religious Shiites."
In other words Rubin and Clawson here are echoing the line of Kenneth Timmerman who for some time now has been urging Administration support of dissenting forces in Iran. These by the way are not necessarily democratic forces.
As for the Iranian nuclear danger Rubin and Clawson are convinced that it is real indeed, and not necessarily because Washington is in danger of suffering nuclear attack tomorrow. The authors convincingly paint a picture of an emboldened nuclear Iran able to vastly increase its terrorist activities as it dominates the Gulf and the world oil situation.
This is an important and instructive book about a nation which under its present leadership is a real threat to Mankind.

An easy read on a timely subject........2006-03-03

This book is well documented (over thirty ages of footnotes and references) but is a quick and easy read (just 162 pages of text). Today Iran has become one of our most important foreign policy problems, and I believe that reading this book is an excellent way to get the historical background required to understand what is going on in that part of the world. Unfortunately it seems to have been proofread by a computer rather than a human being and here and there you will find a word which is obviously not the word the author intended. This is a minor flaw in an otherwise outstanding book.

Great book for Tortoise Owners Like Myself! .......2006-12-27

I recommend this book to anyone who has a turtle or tortoise - it is a handy dandy reference book with lots of insighful information. I have an African desert tortoise that was given to me. I knew nothing about its care - did not even udnerstand what it would eat - this book was helpful.

Easy to read, easy to undertsand. Filled with lots of good common sense stuff that makes it easier to understand your pet.

Best General Book on the Subject- Must Have.......2003-01-20

I don't know how I have missed this book, but it is a wonderfully written book on the subject of turtle biology, with outstanding coverage of all groups of turtles, including sea turtles and the pleurodira. The subjects are very well selected to cover the range of turtle biology, and the collection of photographs is outstanding and very well edited for high quality. I'm just grateful that places like Amazon carry this book, because it is likely that you will not find it anywhere else. Most other books on the subject focus on pet care or classification (naming) of turtles, but this book takes a profoundly original view of their biology. The chapter on paleonology is the best general account of the state of this subject anywhere. A terrific value, and you will not be disappointed!!

The best tortoise book for South African readers.......2000-03-31

After many years of searching for a book on tortoises which is relative to the South African environment, this book appears on the bookshelves. It covers a wide range of subjects with many clear, colourful photographs. I keep a number of the Padloper and Angulata species which have kept me entertained over the years and this book has been "my bible" when it comes to looking up information on them, such as: How to treat an unwell tortoise and information on breeding and the numbering system for keeping track of them. This book is a must for anyone who has tortoises as pets.
