A must read for serious artists, art students, and those interested in contemporary art. McEvilly digests and synthsizes modern (post-renaissance) art theory into a series of essays that attempt to nail down historicity, relavence, and relatedness vis a vis various contemporary artists and art works. An excellent starting point for further discussion of these issues.

Gilbert Hernandez out does himself.......2001-12-29

This beautiful masterpiece of modern art shows the depth of Gilbert's work showing that his work is just as good as Jaime's maybe even then some... his drawing style is very similar to that of Robert Crumb's, and the book is packed with volumptious women such as the Godfather-like Luba, who(once you read the book) you get to see metamorphisize into the mayor of Palomar, and Palomar is basically what most of the book is about.

Even though you see some very unappealing characters, you right away start to sympothize, as if they were members of your family. Such as when Luba gains weight(which later in the book she loses). And there's plenty of things to support re-readability, such as small captions at the bottom of pages and under panels telling you how to correctly pronounce some of the mexican names and what-not. A definate buy.

The storyline is very complex and involving; one forgets that he or she is reading a comic book as opposed to a novel. The Hernandez books have always been amazing, the characters seem very real, and you can feel their emotion as you read the book.

As an educator, I love having stories to share about those who thought they knew what they were talking about and didn't. Too often we take what others' say too seriously and here are wonderful examples of what people said that weren't so insigtful. The book is a delightful read full of lots of laughs as well as moments of deep contemplation as things hit a little too close to home. Thanks to Ms. Lee for another great book.

You Can't Let This One Get Away.......2000-06-07

Bad Predictions definitely has something for everyone. Even a person who doesn't enjoy books won't be able to put this one down after the first glance. It's divided into sections so everyone can flip to their favorite field first. Such as Society, Fashion, Transportation, Technology etc.

I found it not only fun and entertaining, but an educating and even humbling experience. While some of the bad predictions, are humorous, some such as "you'll never need more than 640k" make you realize how much things can change even in a few years. What's considered impossible today can be second nature tomorrow.

Good Book for Start-Up Non-Profits.......2007-04-10

I found this book VERY helpful. In fact, I was so fascinated with it, I couldn't put it down. It was like a good novel. I immediately changed some of my thank you letters and re-did my Corporate request for funding letter. I will continue to use it's suggestions. The book is well written and not full of 'filler info', but very solid recommendations that one can put to use right away.

A fundraising book for the small nonprofit, or one that is not well organized!.......2006-09-06

This is a great book for the small nonprofit that does not know much about fundraising. If it were for a more established nonprofit, then it would not have referred to major gifts as those starting at $500. I'm used to major gifts starting at $10,000 and going up well into the 6 figures.

This book explains how to do the following:

1. Work with individual donors
2. Plan special events
3. Solicit grants from foundations and corporations
4. Get media coverage (publicity)
5. Use the Internet to help in the fundraising process
6. Create print marketing materials like brochures, newsletters, and annual reports

All the above are important parts of a fundraising plan. One has to set goals, strategize how to attain the goals. Then attract individual donors and develop a rapport with those donors so they give more and more each year. Eventually those donors will become major donors, but that topic is best left for another book.

The book includes a good list of Web sites for prospect research. But the appendix materials didn't seem to be up to par.

All in all, this book provides grassroots strategies for struggling nonprofits. It is no-nonsense and well organized. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the basics about nonprofit fundraising. Topics beyond the scope of this book are planned giving, major gifts, capital campaigns, and endowments. But if you read this book and understand it, then you will be ready to learn about the other topics just mentioned. 5 stars!

There are a tremendous number of non-profits around. There are also a tremendous number of funding organizations. Awakening the Next Step in Political Evolution.......2006-02-27

This book is poised to reignite a classic discussion in world federalism that was popular in the nineteen-forties. The case for global federation is made by stating the deficiency of the antiquated nation-state system. The authors liken the current nation-state system to a form of international anarchy, where the peace is fragile and fleeting, held together by nothing more than a loose set of easily breakable treaties, and a low tide in friction between uneven and disparate economic and ideological interests. It is made clear by this book that the absence of enforceable global law creates a fertile medium for war, ecological destruction, and other planetary woes.

A very interesting point made here is that the manifestation of some kind of world governing body is a natural and inevitable course in political evolution which has its beginnings when the first primal families form larger tribal structures. We are being held artificially at the level of nationalism due to a primitive desire to cling to group social identity and the lucrative rewards that perpetual warfare and polarization bring the Machiavellian minded elite.

Of no surprise, the failures and insufficiencies of the United Nations are made mentioned here, along with the realization that the UN may have outgrown its usefulness. In place of the United Nations there are listed, a number of embryonic organizations old and new that are dedicated to world federalism. These could prove viable alternatives to the UN due to the knowledge that the United Nations has a stained record in the eyes of many.

The authors do bear to mention some of the caution and concerns of moving toward a world government, however only briefly. This is something deserving greater attention being that there are those interests concealed from public view, who stand ready to exploit any such scenario. The writers do acknowledge that the best way to keep a world democracy or republic from descending into tyranny, is to have an ever vigilant and informed populace with a well defined charter of rights. A grassroots movement of the people toward world government is stressed in this book. This should be imperative in the mind of the reader because any surreptitious design, precoordinated and handed down to the masses via the plutocratic, would probably result in the New World Order that so many fear.

With that aside, I do recommend this book to all who dream of a borderless world, free of walls, passports, and relentless xenophobia. A world where we are all planetary citizens. Let us move foward with this idea, but let's move with discernment.

Opened my eyes to options for obtaining peace!.......2006-02-24

One World Democracy is an 'additional reading' assignment for my politcal science class. I wasn't expecting to find it quite so interesting. The author presents some very viable options for creating peace and protecting our environment. We had great classroom discussions about some of the concepts in this book.

This is a fabulous book. It really makes you think. As I read it, the lyrics of John Lennon's song "Imagine" went through my mind. This book makes you understand how we could really have a world at peace.
