In the fine tradition of scorched earth, take no prisoners political satire, The Three Little Pigs Buy the White House pokes fun at a certain trio of Republican politicians who are living high on the hog. Watch out: these little pigs have no problem replacing brick with straw when it comes to your nation's security. And don't be afraid of the Big Bad Wolf, that is, if . . . uh . . . we can find him.Written and illustrated by celebrated Bizarro cartoonist, Dan Piraro, The Three Little Pigs Buy the White House is the perfect mockery of politics as grimy as bacon grease.

Too sad, too true!.......2006-11-03
This is a case of preacher and choir in that I love anything that portrays our moron-in-chief as the idiot he is. This is a little more sinister than the usual bush-panning, but that makes it all the more credible. Too sad, too true!
Marilyn Mal has her head in the sand!!.......2005-12-22
I was very annoyed at Marilyn Mal's comments about GWB protecting us from terrorism. I am sick and tired of hearing that. GWB lied to us about why he was going into Iraq and turned it around. Very naive people. I am not liberal nor conservative and am quite fed up with those thinking that if I don't support the mess in Iraq that I'm unamerican. I feel we need to finish the mess in Afganistan. Get your head out of the sand and see what else GWB has done. Everything has gone down in the dumps since he took office and it will continue!!!
Must Reading.......2005-12-01
I was introduced to this book yesterday and immediately had to buy a copy for myself to share with my friends and family.
So many Americans have their heads in the sand during this administration and think these are the "moral" ones. Look again. We have all been deceived and it is becoming more apparent with each passing day.
If left unchecked, we will have the ultra-rich and the very poor and nobody in the Middle Class.
Great conversation starter.
Hilarious!.......2004-10-22
This book is great. It definitely sums up the situation and does so in a respectable manner. A friend brought a copy to work to share and I immediately had to buy one to share with my friends and family. I highly recommend getting a copy.

Warning: The marketing is great; the content is "Poop" .......2005-01-11
I found it disappointing even though I was seeking clean humor. Here is an example of an entire page: "The little sandwich went into a bar. He slid up onto the bar stool and inquired, "May I get something to eat?" The bartender looked down at the little sandwich and answered, "No! We don't serve food here!" This book sells for $7.95 new. Amazon charges $3.95 just to return it. If you like the sample, you'll love this book. I didn't. According to the cover, this is purported to be one of the "funniest jokes ... through out the country." I get it. He didn't say what country.
It has good, clean jokes!.......1999-05-12
I am a member of Toast Masters, and I am always looking for humorous jokes that can be modified and personalized to fit into speeches, talks and lectures. This book has helped me out many times! It has cute jokes that are appropriate for any audience! In fact, our Toast Masters group recommends it! Thank you!
Great jokes and riddles!.......1998-12-30
I thought this book was a great collection of a variety of CLEAN jokes! These are jokes that you can tell anywhere and not be worried about offending anyone. I've always had trouble remembering jokes, but with this book, I've always got a joke on hand!

Product Description
Austria, the multicultural crossroad of the European continent, has been the genesis of many artistic concepts. Just as late 19th and early 20th century Austria gave influential modernism to the world in the fields of medicine, urban planning, architecture, design, literature, music, and theater, so its film industry created a significant national cinema that seeded talents and concepts internationally. Nevertheless, the value of Austrian cinema to international film has been long obscured. Austrias important bond with American film is also underappreciated because of the lack of accessible English language scholarship on the early careers of Austro-Hollywood artists and on influential developments in Austrian film history. This first comprehensive English survey of Austrian film introduces more than a century of cinema, following the development of the industry chronologically through the nations various transformations since 1895. Important industry movements, genres and films are highlighted with sociopolitical, cultural and aesthetic details. An analysis of the economic trends that have influenced Austrian film is also provided. The survey considers the directors, actors, producers, writers, cinematographers, editors, composers and other film artists who have been essential to the development and influence of Austrian cinema. The closing chapter anticipates new faces of the Austrian film industry in the 21st century.

Finally!.......2006-03-17
A book on Austrian film history (and what a history) with a fine narrative style and details galore. I am looking up everything I never knew! How something like this hasn't been available before is beyond me. Superb.
A first--and a very good one!.......2006-03-15
What a terrific book. There is next to nothing available on Austrian film on any level and this text provides a solid and very readable introduction. I am familiar with Central Europe, so I know something about Austrian history, but this book manages to weave the cinema into the political events so well that I don't have to go find a history book to help me. The author manages to do a theoretical reading of at least one film per era, which enlightens the discussion on a more academic level, but without boring the casual reader. I was particularly fascinated with the reasons for Austria's no-show in 1960s cinema, after so much production in the 1950s and when other Europeans (including the often production partnered Czechoslovakians) were having a New Wave. The chapters on New Austrian Film is also a fine companion to some of these films that are now available in the US. There seems to be almost too much information here, if that is possible! So, for the second edition, and I hope there will be one, the index (names only; very European) needs to be expanded to include other aspects of the text. I am not crazy about the textbook binding, but its a nicely produced book, with some very interesting stills. I have learned a great deal here and continue to come back to the book often.

I explored the guide at a friend's house and was astounded by the number of references available to anyone who wants to know all there is to know. I work at a newspaper, take foreign language classes and am interested in fine arts.... Just to read the titles of websites is fun.
for general purpose online research.......2006-06-13
Ignore "Complete" in the title. No book can hope to match the breadth of the Web. But Schlein does a commendable job in succinctly describing several hundred websites. The value in this book is in his selection. The websites typically have reliable content and lots of it.
In terms of doing online research, it's mostly at a high school or undergraduate level. If you are a grad student or a professional researcher, then the websites covered here are typically too broad for your needs.
Schlein also advises the reader on how to guard against various online perils like spam and phishing. Well, ok, for the latter, he really doesn't offer much except warning you to be on guard. Partly a reflection of the lack of a good programmatic defense against phishing.
Easiest read reference for online resources.......2006-02-27
Of the many books I have read and own on this subject, this one flows the best and is the easiest to read. That said, this book does not speak to the technical in terms the hows/whys of resources.
Online research.......2005-09-23
I purchased this book as a requirement for an English class. The information set forth is interesting and well written, but it can be difficult to find what I need.
Book Description
With unsurpassed honesty and humility, the highly influential meditation master Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche offers a glimpse into the remarkable reality of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as an in depth portrait of the lost culture of old Tibet. This grand narrative stretches across generations, providing an inspiring glimpse into a realm of remarkable human achievement quite different from our familiar, mundane world. Intimate in tone, these personal memoirs recount the influences and experiences that shaped one of the great spiritual teachers of our time. Blazing Splendor is of both spiritual and historical importance.
Customer Reviews:
Packed with beautiful stories and full of ambience.......2007-06-27
I'm thoroughly enjoying this book! It is full of beautiful stories about the lifestyle and people of the intense Buddhist spiritual culture in Tibet in the last century. So many anecdotes bring the whole scene to life. The flavor of that whole world comes through so clearly. I'm not a Nyingma practitioner - so I'm not talking as a devoted student per se - but it's such a rich read and I'd recommend to anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism.
I've hardly read anything that gives the same depth of detail and cultural ambiance as this.
Passport to a Sacred Society.......2007-03-25
I found this book fascinating. It gave me a window to view the way of life of an elite sector of traditional Tibetan society - the high-born lamas of Eastern Tibet - and their complete dedication to the pursuit of spiritual attainment within the context of the buddho-shamistic culture of their people. Written from deeply within the context of the Tibetan spiritual worldview, this narrative brings to life the character of many great masters from pre-communist Tibet, and puts the teachings that survive them within the context of their traditional way of life. If you are interested in awakening to Truth, the Dzogchen teachings, and traditional cultures, you are sure to find this an interesting read, providing that you are able to navigate the many dozens of Tibetan names and words that occur throughout the text (glossary included.) :) The greatest thing that struck me from reading this memoir was how profoundly the society of Tibet supported its spiritual practitioners - and in contrast how lacking our modern society is in this regard. Truly, despite all of its failings from a modern humanistic perspective, traditional Tibet was a sacred society.
Blazing Splendor: A Great Story, Told in the Oral Traditon of Tibet.......2006-07-25
Many reviewers have rated this book among the best because it tells the story of a great Tibetan teacher. Some of Rinpoche's students are well known teachers in the United States and other countries. This is a well told story that could, at one level, be a history of the lineage holders that compise the evaporating pool of knowledge of Tibetan Buddhist tradition and culture. On a deeper level, it is a teaching in the oral and Tantric tradition, and because the authors are careful to keep the narrative as told by Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, it has the feel of a story heard while sitting in his presence. My only complaint is that the endnotes are so fact-filled and important to understanding the traditonal background of the story, that they probably should be formatted as footnotes, just so that one does not have to continually flip to the back of the book. This is an important book for those who care about Tibet and all that it was and still is because of the living oral history that remains accessible in spite of, and maybe even because of, events that ocurred in the last century.
Timeless notes on a time gone by.......2006-06-05
This volume is wonderfully fresh and accessible. It is like sitting, listening to stories told by a dear friend or relative. There are charming details, remarkable personal observations of many of the greatest lamas of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, down through Dzonsar Khyenste, Dilgo Kyentse and the 16th Karmapa. A deep theme throughout is that of the "terton", the gifted soul who uncovers "treasures" or "terma" hidden by Padmasambhava to be discovered when the time and times are correct. The author's great grandfather, Chokgyur Lingpa, was one of the last and greatest tertons, and the teachings thus uncovered - how and where they occurred, who was involved, the lineage of those who received these teachings, and so forth - is central to the story. I have found nothing like this in any of the many I've read on Tibet and the Tibetans.
Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche tells stories of these events that go back a considerable ways before he was born, into the 19th century, when Tibet was a world unto itself. He ends the book with a relatively brief description of the work he undertook at the direction of the 16th Karmapa to build a monastery near the great stupa of Boudanath, near Kathmandu, many years after his departure from Tibet in 1955. One sees glimpses throughout the narrative of the coming debacle; remarkable prophecies, side by side with engaging tales of his encounters with masters of the Dharma. It is a unique account, not to be missed, especially by those who seek a deeper understanding of how the great lamas of Tibet in that time lived their lives, related to each other, maintained their lineages and looked forward to preservation of the Dharma in a changed world. Altogether enchanting!
Blazing Splendor, Blazing Life.......2006-03-19
¨Blazing Splendor takes us through the life of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, from his birth in Tibet in this life, to the end. This account includes details of life in a Tibet that has seen many changes over time. This book is a rich resource for the history, growth and development of Buddhism in our own time. It is a wonderfully warm telling of Rinpoche's relationships with his grandmother, his father, and the many Lamas he met over that time. A good book for the inquisitive, and the student alike.

The night of 27 April 1944...Exercise Tiger...rehearsal for the D-Day landings off the coast of Devon..German E-boats interceped the convoy of landing craft..946 American servicemen died. B/W photos - 6 1/2 x 9 3/4", 197 pages
Book Description
On April 28, 1944, a rehearsal for the D-Day landings off England's Devon coast went terribly wrong. A series of blunders allowed German E-boats to intercept the convoy of landing ships, and 946 Americans-many of them young and untrained-lost their lives. Yet until the publication of The Forgotten Dead, the true scale of this tragedy had never before come to light. This is the story of one man and his obsession to honor the memory of the 946 American soldiers who died needlessly that night. In the early 1970s, Ken Small, a hotelier, began beachcombing along Slapton Sands, near his hotel. He soon discovered unexpended bullets, U.S. dollars, and the personal possessions of U.S. servicemen. Gradually, he pieced together the events of that night and began the struggle to erect a memorial to honor the dead soldiers. This is the story of how he fought governments on both sides of the Atlantic to uncover the truth.
Customer Reviews:
One man's goal of honoring the 946 GI dead of Devon Beach........2004-09-20
A few years ago, the story came out on how 946 American soldiers died when practice landings on the Devon Coast in Great Britain went terribly wrong. This was due in no small part to Ken Small who lived in the region and beach combed as a hobby. Small describes how he uncovered this little known story and the remains of this landing. Along with the raids by German E-boats, several tanks sank during the initial landing. Small uncovered one tank and arranged that it be brought ashore, repaired, and displayed as a memorial to those soldiers who died. He battled both the American and British governments to accomplish this. He also spent a small fortune in this effort.
I admire the courage and fortitude of this man. The book is his testament to the deaths of these 946 Americans, and the grateful expression of one English man for their sacrifice. This is a pleasant read for those who think all Europeans have forgotten what the USA did for Europe in WWII.
A Man Obsessed.......2000-04-23
"The Forgotten Dead" is an autobiography of one man's struggle to to pay tribute to 946 American servicemen killed durng rehersals for D-Day off the coast of Deven in England 1944. Mr. Ken Small, an ex-policman and ex-hairdresser, began to uncover the events of the D-Day rehersals while partaking in his hobby of "beachcombing". The book includes a summery all the events of the D-Day rehersals from the the displacement of the local population in the area sourounding Slapton Sands and Blackpool Sands along the coast of Deven to the catatrophe of operation Tiger when a convoy of U.S. Landing Ships were attacked by German E-Boats. Mr. Small supplements his narrative with detailed accounts from U.S. Servicemen who survived operation Tiger and U.S. and U.K. servicemen who were involved in the decisions leading up to operation Tiger. However, the crux of "The Forgotten Dead" is Mr. Smalls obsession with establishing a memorial to pay tribute to all those who perished in the D-Day rehersals. Though not a Pulitzar Prize winner, "The Forgotten Dead" is well worth reading as it recounts a catastrophe in World War II which, until a few years ago, not many people knew about. I, myself, became engrossed in Mr. Small's epic struggles with endless bureaucracies...I found this book to be entertaining as well as thought provoking. ....
Book Description
The World Factbook, produced annually by the CIA, has become the ultimate, authoritative source of information on all the nations of the world. It provides current data for more than 250 countries and territories, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Potomac Books, Inc. publishes a commercial version of The World Factbook in order to extend the limited audience reached by the CIAâs own publication. This current Potomac edition is identified by the year 2006, following the pattern used in our other annual publications. The CIA completes its volume late each year, and Potomac republishes it the following year.
Topics addressed include the political climate, natural resources, environment, population, ethnic groups, GDP, agriculture, industries, defense expenditures, literacy rate, religion, legal system, and much more. Key data are grouped under the headings of geography, people, government, economy, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues. The World Factbook also contains maps of each country and others for key territories. In addition, readers will find handy appendixes on international organizations and groups, international environmental agreements, and a cross-referenced list of geographic names. The World Factbook provides the indispensable reference for curious individuals concerned about a rapidly changing world.
Customer Reviews:
Don't leave home without it!.......2006-05-02
This is a superb reference work. I note, with some surprise, that there is a spate of negative reviews, which all involve (1) printing the flags in black-and-white (2) the Vatican (3) Yugoslavia. I don't think that any of these issues is important.
So I am buying the new book, because the old one is out-of-date. The latest information is on-line, of course, and I refer to that frequently, but actually having the book is extremely convenient, and sometimes a lot faster. (I live in Thailand, and use a dial-up modem connection to the Internet, and if I get curious about the GDP per capita in China versus India, the book is just a whole lot quicker.)
Where else can you find reliable reports on all the nations around the world?
Flawed edition of a great reference.......2003-05-15
In 1995, my high school history teacher gave me a copy of the World Factbook. It has information about every area in the world including all UN Members, dependencies of nations (Puerto Rico, Aruba, American Samoa), and areas under dispute (West Bank, Gaza Strip, Taiwan, Western Sahara), and the five oceans. I have used the book for six years since then. This leads us to this edition. This edition is in black and white. Because of this flaw, you cannot tell the colors in the various flags. The publisher left out a series of maps that are published in the back of the Factbook. Despite what the publisher says, this leaves the Factbook incomplete. Another flaw is that the publisher dates the previous years Factbook with the next years date. This could leave users confused. A previous reviewer faulted this edition for having the former Yugoslavia as 'Serbia and Montenegro'. There is a reason for this. Until Slobodan Milosevic's defeat in the 2000 Yugoslav elections, the US Government acknowledged the fact that Serbia and Montenegro - the two remaining republics left of the old communist Yugoslavia (the four other republics had left the former Yugoslavia by 1991-92) had formed a new nation - the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). In saying that, the US (and the United Nations) felt the FRY was not the replacement for the old communist Yugoslavia. The CIA, being apart of the government followed suit. Another review claims the World Factbook does not have Vatican City. In fact, the book has the Vatican under the name of Holy See. The reason the Holy See is not under the name of Vatican City is that the Holy See and Vatican City are two different entities. The Holy See is the center of the Catholic church. It signs treaties and sends diplomats to various countries. The Vatican owns the Holy See's property but doesn't sign treaties and send diplomats around the world because it chooses not to. Because of this, the latter is listed. You can't fault them for these things. The bottom line: go to the CIA site first to preview the factbook before you buy. If you decide to buy, get the Factbook from the government and not this flawed edition.
Complete Wast of Money.......2002-05-12
If you like tables, charts, graphs, and maps, this is not the book for you. Everything in the book is available for free on the CIA website. Check out the website before you decide to buy the book, so you can see how little (in the way of anything interesting, useful, or detailed) the book offers.
Who ever said the media got things right?.......2001-01-29
Someone mentioned that the factbook lists a country as "Serbia and Montenegro" instead of as "Yugoslavia" as a big complaint about possible factual errors. Serbia existed long before the name "Yugoslavia" ever existed to be put on a map; and with the dissolution of Yugoslavia (for whatever reason one chooses to explain it), it has become Serbia once again, irregardless of what CNN uses on their news reports.
If we substitute "Wales and Scotland" and "Great Britian" for "Serbia and Montenegro" and "Yugoslavia", those complaints sound rather silly.
?.......2000-11-28
I don't know about the printed edition, but the online version has Vatican City listed under "Holy See" and clearly states, "Serbia and Montenegro have asserted the formation of a joint independent state, but this entity has not been formally recognized as a state by the US. The US view is that the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) has dissolved and that none of the successor republics represents its continuation." If the printed version omits these statements, or if the Yugoslavia was recognized as a state by the time this was published, just ignore this review.

Excellent info, but check the internet first.......2006-04-04
Just FYI, the information in this book [disclaimer: I haven't actually looked in the hard copy!] is available on the internet at www.cia.gov. And it is extensive. GDP? Political parties? Border disputes? Latest election results? Percentage of arable land? Unemployment rate? "Factbook" is an appropriate name, as it is just that, a list of facts. A very useful starting point for just about any topic of interest regarding any country. And the website info is pretty regularly updated. The small, uneventful country I checked just before writing this review was last updated about two months ago--in 2006, even though the website title info still says "2005".
