Book Description

Art New York presents a selection of the most influential, historically significant and entertaining galleries dedicated to contemporary art, a personal selection of the spaces, events and institutions that shape New York's art scene. That scene is constantly in flux. One of the most significant changes of recent years has seen an exodus of galleries from SoHo - a district only discovered by the art world in the 1970s - to Chelsea as real-estate prices soared, largely because of the success of the galleries originally attracted there by cheap rents. Even cheaper rents in Williamsburg, across the Brooklyn Bridge, attracted more new galleries and, again, affordable accommodation and studio space have quickly become things of the past. The New York art scene is based on the existence of a wealthy and shrewd market, constantly on the lookout for new stars. There are some big personalities on the scene on all sides: the artists, the dealers, and the patrons. Art New York provides starting points for discovering this world. 150 b/w photographs.

About the Ellipsis New York Guides: Selective, opinionated, and packed with reasonably up-to-date information, these guides will be indispensable both for those in the know and those who know that's where they want to be. Each book features critical descriptions of the best, the most interesting and the exemplary, illustrated with specially commissioned photographs.

This book is a must for anyone who wants to know more about the "art" world, but doesn't know where to start. It has simple descriptions of all the main galleries in New York. So far I've only visited a few, but I'd have to say the author's descriptions were dead on. And it's pocket sized!

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2002-10-09

Fantstic book covering vast countries, with incrediable pictures that are captured with such elegance and beauty.
Bonnie Young has created a book of dreams.
It is also nice to have such a great collection of pictures that are of such a great quality and without useless text, as in this case the pictures speak for themselves.

hopefully there will be a follow up book to this, although she has captured the world & her subject fully and truely that nothing could top this book.

5 out of 5 stars Paper version of a dream.......1999-02-12

This is more than a coffie table book. If you insist to display it make sure you open everyday a different page, and everyday you will immerge yourself in a spectacular dream. Bonnie Young has great talent in capturing the best of the moment. She focuses on the details with so much visual power. The book is a moving post-card. It is capable to transport you among the most beautiful places on hearth. Not only, but in the most creative sadisfactory way. The colors, the colors are the true protagonist of this book. The viewer is left with emotions and memories of mesmorizing beauty. Donna Karan, once again, is the most progressive of the american designers. She truly incorporate fashion with art, spirit and soul. She undestands that everything is connected in a whole concept and, for me, she is the testimonial of a Modern Soul...as the title her other must-have book.

4 out of 5 stars Good book to put on your coffee table!!!!.......1998-12-12

This is an interesting compilation of world photos meant to represent persons and cultures in naturalistic settings. Although the photos are obviously posed, they are well-photographed and the book is beautifully edited. This is a great gift idea for persons of any age or walk of life.

Book Description

Still recovering from the death of her co-worker and lover, Tara Chace is granted a brief reprieve from London's rain and MI6's bureaucracy. This emotionally charged vacation takes Chace to the slopes of Switzerland for a visit with old friends and family. But being an agent for Her Majesty's Secret Intelligence Service leaves little time for rest. A junior minister with close ties to the Prime Minister appears to be selling state secrets to the Russians, and the Minders are assigned to quietly investigate. Tara is forced to walk a tight rope between the violent dangers inherent in the field of espionage and the discretion inherent in the bureaucracy of the government, all the while assuming the new position of Minder One and field-testing a new agent. Operation: Saltlick takes the Special Section from the safety and comfort of Great Britain to the St. Petersburg underworld.

5 out of 5 stars Another Q&C success!.......2005-05-15

Could this simply be the finest work in the Q&C ouevre? The drama is tight, the action is hot, you want to beat the crap out of the wanker "C", and you want to fall in love with Tara Chace (forget that she's just ink on paper). The vulnerability of the female character is exceptionally rendered visually and intellectually. The prologue should help explain some of Chace's behavior as she encounters her overbearing, sexually loose mother. It doesn't completely, and at first I found it off-putting this was included in the overall arc, but the full story overcame this small shortfall. Rucka continues to portray Chace's female character with sensitivity that most secret agents do not get as they are, usually, beyond pain, grief, and failure. Could a male character fill Chace's boots? I don't care and hope Rucka never attempts to find out.

        4 out of 5 stars Barry Gifford's Enthusiastic Take on 118 Noir-ish Movies. .......2006-08-30

"Out of the Past: Adventures in Film Noir" is a collection of essays by novelist, screenwriter, and noir aficionado Barry Gifford. Gifford is a man who relishes a hard, twisted look at American culture and its underbelly. He wrote the novel "Wild At Heart" and the screenplay "Lost Highway", both David Lynch films. In "Out of the Past", Gifford shares his thoughts on 118 film noirs, classic and neo-noir, made 1933-1988. Actually, many of these films could hardly be called noir, and I don't think that Gifford claims that they are. Some are sci-fi, horror, or plain drama that manifest a noir world view. Most essays are dedicated to a single film, but a few discuss groups of films that have something in common. Most films are American. Three are French. The essays are in alphabetical order by film title, and may also be located using the index in the back of the book.

These are Barry's Gifford's personal reactions to the films that he loves, so the essays don't all follow the same format. Gifford writes about what strikes him, which sometimes involves analysis of characters, themes, and styles. Sometimes he includes some history. The essays in which Gifford relates personal anecdotes are among his best. Books of essays are usually dry, but Gifford's writing is energetic and sometimes even colorful. It's easy and entertaining to read. The essays are a little light on analysis for my taste, and Gifford's (inconsistent) tendency to refer to characters by the actors' names annoyed me. But if you find most film noir books too dry or academic, Gifford's essays are for you. These are his "adventures in film noir". Gifford is great at singing the praises of obscure movies, too, so "Out of the Past" will give you some DVD/video rental ideas.

        2 out of 5 stars unnecessary.......2006-07-16

Shallow, off-the-cuff reviews that relate plot and opinion and do little more. Gifford says he'd intended them to be "impressionistic" writeups, which is fine for his purposes but not very helpful for most others. In these entries Gifford offers little research or argument to support his views, instead tossing off praises or dismissals without bothering to justify them. The trouble is that this is a book, not a conversation at a coffeeshop, and so there's little chance of understanding why Gifford thinks the way he does. The result is a book that's more frustrating than illuminating.

4 out of 5 stars Unique approach to film noir critiques.......2002-04-29

Gifford is multi-talented, having published poetry, fiction (both short and novel-length) and non-fiction, as well as collaborating on screenplays based on two of his novels (Wild at Heart and Perdita Durango, aka Dance with the Devil) and on a screenplay based on a play he wrote (Hotel Room).

He's a noir kinda guy in pretty much all his writing and here he dives into over 100 films with short (i.e., about two pages max) writeups of some of his favorite movies, some of which are typically film noir and some of which are not. For example, you wouldn't usually call Island of Lost Souls, 1933 with Charles Laughton, film noir, but Gifford here is driving home his perspective which deals with the dark side of the cinema--those films that deal with corruption and desperation in all their manifestations.

Probably the most valuable aspect of this book is that you find out something about films that very few other reviewers write about. The original title of this book (this is a revised version, published in 2000) was called The Devil Thumbs a Ride and Gifford here supplies some pretty trenchant comments about that film (with one of the most evil characters in film noir ever, done up right by ultra tough guy Lawrence Tierney) and other obscure yet important works in the genre.

Cul-de-Sac by Polanski is included--hard to find, but definitely one of the director's better films. The Mean Season (which I found weak) is included. Shack Out on 101 (has anyone actually seen this film?) is included. Invasion of the Body Snatchers. You get the idea.

Gifford obviously does not confine himself to suspense/mystery, but embraces films in all genres and lets fly with some strong opinions about all of them. You may not agree with everything he says (I sure don't!) but what he has to say is intriguing and definitely worth a look.

1 out of 5 stars Gifford is the worst.......2001-08-14

I just can't stand this guy. At least these books keep him away from his unreadable fiction or helping David Lynch foist more garbage on the silver screen.

4 out of 5 stars Punchy Prose to Motivate any Film Buff.......2001-05-26

Novelist, playwright, essayist, and screenwriter (Lost Highway) Gifford here presents a newly titled edition of his 1988 book The Devil Thumbs A Ride. The book is a guide to approximately 120 films "about corruption and crime," which, if not exactly noir, are at least noirish in their bleak and melancholy outlook. These range from 1933's The Island of Lost Souls to 1988's House of Games, although the majority of the films are from the '40s-'50s. That particularly rich period of the early '70s is also well-covered, with essays on Badlands, Chinatown, The Getaway, Get Carter, and Mean Streets. The chief joy, and distinguishing feature, of this book is that Gifford writes about each movie with the enthusiasm and expertise of a real fan and the crisp prose of an accomplished writer. Rarely does he indulge in the obvious observation or criticism, rather he's at his best when he gives it to the reader straight, capturing the tone of the film in a punchy paragraph. He'll also motivate you to take a second look at apparent junk (Elvis' 1958 King Creole is the best example) with a new perspective, and rent forgotten or overlooked gems like 1978's Straight Time, and 1980's Tom Horn. Each entry gives you an incentive to watch the movie, although be forewarned--he does tend to give the entire plot. Sometimes the essays focus on the careers and roles of leading and supporting actors rather than the film itself, subjects Gifford makes as compelling as the actual films. The one pity is that this new edition doesn't include any films released since its original publication (films like One False Move, Reservoir Dogs, and The Limey come to mind, as well as recent remakes of classics like The Getaway and Cape Fear). Gifford does toss in a few British and French films to make things a little more inclusive, but it would be nice to see him move further afield with something like Kurosawa's 1949 film, Stray Dog or even Chungking Express. But this is perhaps more a case of being greedy than an actual criticism of what is there.

            Book Description

Attracting Perfect Customers leads readers through a transformation as they learn that it is no longer productive or profitable to conduct business using warlike marketing techniques such as "targeting" customers and "outmaneuvering" the competition. In fact, these techniques seem both outdated and labor-intensive when compared to the Strategic Synchronicity process, which requires just five minutes of planning each day.

Strategic Synchronicity is based on nine principles that are not new but are often neglected in today's business world. Among them are the ideas that businesses don't need to search for customers if they are "on purpose"; that collaboration, not competition, is required; and that businesses create their own "clients from hell".

This book offered nothing of real value. I've noticed that the only people that really gave it good comments are other "business and success coaches". There are no real original or earth-moving ideas in this book.

So if you want to hear another "success consultant" write about "shifting paradigms" and "thinking outside the box", the same old tired and worn-out buzz words, buy the book

When this book was recommended to me I was hoping it wasn't "just another marketing book". Fortunately it's so much more than that! This book outlines into a powerful and profound 4-step process designed to create clarity around your business relationships (it can also be applied to ANY relationship although the book doesn't explore this). The problem with memoirs by ex-secret agents is that they usually make their careers sound about as exciting as that of $6-an-hour bowling alley security guard, unless you're of the opinion that filing papers and making phone calls is the epitome of thrills. Antonio Mendez, however, has produced a tome that makes the life of a CIA agent sound every bit the slam-bang world of intrigue and skulking in the shadows that movies like Mission: Impossible make it out to be.

Honored by the CIA on its 50th anniversary as being one of the agency's 50 "Trailblazers," the now-retired Mendez spins a fast-paced tale of intriguing characters partaking in skullduggery in exotic locales, made all the more appealing because Mendez himself is the featured star of the proceedings. In an almost offhand manner, he writes about seeing and doing things that would wilt the flower of courage in almost any reader. "Was I proud to be enlisting," he rhetorically ponders at one point, "on our side in the Cold War? You bet." Originally drafted by the CIA as a "technical artist" to provide cover for agents behind enemy lines, Mendez worked his way up the ladder and progressed to a full-fledged agent in the field, sneaking diplomats past enemy guards and spiriting informants into the night, eluding capture and torture at every turn--and using his artist's eye for detail to paint vivid word pictures of his predicaments. Mendez possesses a remarkably keen sense of the mechanics of a good cloak-and-dagger story, and fortunately pours it on in abundance here in his quite hefty--and surprisingly lively--autobiography. --Tjames Madison

              3 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......2006-11-12

Mendez's work is a good and basic introduction to the Cold War aspects of the CIA. It is not a detailed history of the CIA as some have hoped for nor should it be. It is one man's story and snapshot of a twenty-five year career inside some of the covert programs that helped shape the geopolitical structure as it is today. Also anyone interested in certain aspects of Russia's secret history before the "Fall" will gather nuggets of interesting info here and there. Overall, this book was a fun read and interesting even if we'll never know how much of it is true.

3 out of 5 stars It starts off good..........2006-11-06

The book starts off interestingly enough. It lives up to its expectations at first, giving the readers an interesting and suspenseful take of the life of a spy, but then it gets very redundant. Mendez seems to be talking about the same mission over and over but in different locations. Also, the CIA's censorship is not only apparent, it less interesting. And the ending is not satisfying at all. This book is great for history buffs but not for casual readers.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting read.......2006-10-04

I found this book to be an interesting read from the perspective of CIA operations and clandestine activites. It revealed to me the true inner working of espionage and made me think of numerous other "spy" stories which had parallel activies like; Three Days of the Condor where analysts are pouring over dreary printed text to pull intelligence info, Mission Impossible which what I thought use to be over the top disguise and survellience gear but now realize it's not that far from the truth, and more recently the story from the movie "The Recruit" with Al Pacino where you see the "Farm" where CIA operatives are trained. You also get some nice tidbits of history about the CIA. One grip was that there was little suspense and action. There were details of specific missions however these were mainly details from the operational side and a bit dry, thus my 3-star rating. All in all, a good read for those interested in spy craft and our nations top intelligence service.

3 out of 5 stars Agree to Disagree...........2006-08-29

This was my first book about the CIA. After watching the movie Spy Game, I decided to learn a little more about our nations Central Intelligence Service. I browsed other books on Amazon and settled on this one, despite some disparaging reviews.

On the whole, if you are seeking background info on the CIA including: its origins from World War II as the OSS, A brief run down on every major conflict that America has been involved in since that time; as well as a taste of some of the politicking that goes on behind the scenes in the Washington agency. I thought the book accomplished its mission.

Granted these nuggets of info are scattered like hidden drop points throughout the book, but by the end I felt like I could put the pieces together into a better overall appreciation for what the CIA does and how it gets things done -- which is what I was looking for.

You do have to wade through a lot of Mr. Mendez's boy hood experiances, early in the book when I would have preferred more info about his training processes once he was entered the CIA. However, if you stick with the book you do discover the reason for all the back story and it did seem worth including.

If, on the other hand you are looking for riveting prose and action packed dialogue between well developed characters you better try Tom Clancy and not Tony Mendez.

              I would read it again.
              Cheers

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Been A Better Book.......2006-07-23

The hand of the CIA censors seems so heavy here that one wonders why they bothered authorizing this book. The book is not particularly exciting and even where the circumstances would seem to encourage excitement and suspense, the author sprays cold water on it. It seems he and the CIA want to tell more but they simply can't for security reasons, so we're left with a book with no soul or excitement. Also, Mendez is no Le Carre, so whereas the author may be an accomplished pro in the intelligence field, he's an amateur as a book writer. In fact, the book reads like one of those self-published efforts where the author wields turgid prose and then gives copies to all his friends. And, again, due to the nature of the book, descriptions are cryptic to the point where you really don't know what the author's talking about. To be fair, there were some interesting parts -- descriptions of some of the tradecraft techniques were fascinating and the CIA's heavy involvement in a spectacular Iranian caper actually came close to being suspenseful. And, for some reason I'm always surprised when I learn that the CIA really does function like the spy novels say it does. So, all in all, it was an educational book that will delight CIA junkies, but, alas, I just think it could have been done so much better.

Soyer's brilliant memoir, published in 1856 and never since reprinted. A vivid account of the Crimean War and of Soyer's inventions and recipes for feeding armies in the field. He was as important in the Crimea as Florence Nightingale, for his influence on the reform of army feeding enabled wounded soldiers to survive. A modified version of the Soyer stove was still in use in the Gulf War. Introductions by Elizabeth Ray and military historian Michael Barthorp.

                  Book Description

Who are the political barbarians bankrupting America -- Democrats or Republicans? Where are taxpayers' dollars really going? Joe Scarborough gives you the inside scoop on how Washington really works and on the out-of-control deficit spending that takes place in our nation's capital each and every day.

Joe Scarborough, former Republican congressman and current host of MSNBC's top-rated Scarborough Country, takes you behind the closed doors of Congress and wittily presents the reasons why Democrats and Republicans are alike when it comes to squandering taxpayer dollars.

As part of the Gingrich Republican Revolution, he witnessed the principles of fiscal responsibility get buried in the political swamp of Washington. Now Scarborough offers profound solutions on how excessive government spending by politicians of all stripes can be minimized, and how the Repub-lican Party can be called back to the principles that President Ronald Reagan made famous.

                  "

Here's the Real Deal! The same Washington politicians who took control of Congress by promising to balance the federal budget are now bankrupting America by launching the biggest spending spree in the history of the United States.

With big-spending Democrats at their side, President George Bush and his ""conservative"" Republican Congress have controlled the government's checkbook while the national debt has skyrocketed past seven trillion dollars. That's right, $7,000,000,000,000. How has the party of Reagan become the party of big- government spending?

Now former Republican congressman Joe Scarborough delivers a scathing indictment of Republicans and Democrats alike in the same informed, hard-hitting, and entertaining style fans of Scarborough Country have come to admire. Having had a ringside seat during his four terms in the House of Representatives, Scarborough gives the inside scoop on how Washington really works and on the spending orgy the Republicans have fueled the last ten years.

The story begins with Newt Gingrich's Contract with America and the Republicans promising to balance the budget and reform Washington. It culminates with a Republican president continually rubber-stamping pork-filled appropriations bills that squander taxpayer dollars. That is, unless you think it's necessary to spend millions of dollars on research into ""alternative salmon products"" in Alaska, or the study of crickets in Utah, or of sea turtles in Hawaii. Sadly, these instances merely hint at the gross spending by Congress.

3 out of 5 stars How Republican Revolution Went Astray.......2006-12-11

Mr. Scarborough was elected to Congress in the 1994 election that saw the Republicans take control of both houses for the first time in many years. Speaker Newt Gingrich and the Republicans who had signed a "Contract with America" were riding high, but their revolution wouldn't last long. It's one thing to promise term limits, it's another to observe them when your time to step down arrives.

Financial discipline is a worthy goal, but enforcing it is unpopular because government spending is a source of power and most of our political leaders and their staffs would rather spend more than less. Consider some of the questionable programs that get funded, such as these items from the 1998 Highway Bill: $3 million spent on a film extolling the virtues of highways; $20 million directed at building roads overseas; $1.5 million to study the parking habits of truckers at their favorite truck stops; $500,000 to study sidewalks at the Kennedy Center; $2.75 million to build a smoother access road to a baseball park in Dayton, Ohio.

2005 Update: There were 6,371 earmarked amendments in the Federal highway bill enacted in 2005. One infamous example was a $230 million bridge to the Ketchikan, Alaska airport (on an island) that became known as "the bridge to nowhere." This particular earmark was ultimately eliminated, but only on the understanding that the State of Alaska could retain the funds for use as it saw fit.

The author uses his own experiences to relate how "the party of Reagan" morphed within a few years into a party bent on launching new spending programs at the same time that it was cutting taxes.

To "change the way Washington works," Scarborough advocates process-related changes such as a Congressional pay freeze until the federal budget is balanced and statutory term limits (6 years) for members of the House of Representatives. His suggestions might not prove a panacea, but they are certainly worth considering.

3 out of 5 stars We're Not Rome, But Who Cares!.......2005-08-12

Joe Scarborough of Pensacola, Florida, knows this subject from the get-go, as he served in Congress for seven years. He confirms what the young aide to Clinton explained in DERELICTION IN OFFICE that golf was the only thing he knew how to do well, with the exception of entertaining young women in the Oval Office.

He writes, "Instead of sexual tricks or epicurean delights, it is usually the male ego that drives most political and policy trains in Washington." I have news for him, it's that way all over the world, Knoxville, Podunk, even Rome. No, Rome wasn't built in a day, but could have been burnt in half a day -- had the need surfaced.

Clinton was able to balance the budget with a massive 1993 tax hike and the tremendous cut back of the military. That is the main reason so many American men are dying right now in Iraq -- the lack of competent military equipment. In the latest TIME magazine, the most recent fatalities were shown and seven were in that beautiful Marine uniform. They are dead; they did not get to enjoy being dressed to kill, as they were killed. Why deceive these young men into being guinea pigs in a political war over oil rights and money.

The "Fat White Pink Boys" are a certain class of political hacks who checked their manhood at Washington's city limits. Some even migrated down here to Knoxville, Tennessee. We have a plentiful supply of that kind of politician. In fact, that's about the only kind of politician we have here. Since our former mayor (14 years) was a college classmate of Bush's and was relagated ambassador to Poland, I guess those pink boys all stick together to hang onto their money while making the populace suffer. The men here can't even talk like men, have high voices and sound like kids. The short ones even look like dressed up children on their way to church.

He relates what happened to him on 9-11-01. We will all remember where we were when we heard. I was in the emergency room of Hillcrest Hospital watching it on the television set and asking "do we have suicide bombers here?" not really aware of the vastness of the dire acts of terrorism. The day all of those innocent people died in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, I learned that the hemangioma on my liver would not kill me right away. They died while I had a reprieve. What a coincidence. What timing! Now my anemia is causing me to have a yellow tint -- has the liver caught up with me just four years later? I will never willingly die. I shall haunt the KAT buses and the Tennessee Theatre when my time comes; in the meantime, I plan to live forever. And I hope Scarborough Country does, too. More power to you, Joe. Go get 'em!

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2005-06-10

From the info on the dust jacket, I was expecting shocking new facts about the government. This book had no surprises and no new revelations; it's basically a retelling of what we already know about politicians: (1) They'll say anything and promise anything to get elected; (2) None actually keep their word; (3) They all push for massive pork projects that bleed taxpayers dry; and(4) Both parties share the blame for our catastrophic national debt.

The book is interesting and easy to read and Scarborough's style is entertaining. He deals mostly with his own experiences as a junior congressman and the book almost feels like an attempt to explain why he wasn't able to keep his own promises. I don't know anything about his campaign or his time as a congressman, but there seems to be an awful lot of justification and finger-pointing here.

It's still a decent read, but it should have been pitched as an autobiography, not an expose on Washington.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Real Eye Opener.......2005-04-26

If you are either a Reagan Democrat or a Reagan Republican, Joe Scarborough has bad news for you. Ten years after the Republican take over of the House of Representatives the former champions of limited government are now the primary dispensers of government cash. Far from limiting the growth of government, the ruling Republicans are merely doling out the cash in a different pattern than did the Democrats. The game has not changed in the least.

This is the tale told in "Rome Wasn't Burnt In A Day." There are impressive facts and figures to back up Joe's thesis. According to Scarborough, the size and scope of government has not retreated in the ten years since the heady days of 1994 when he was elected to Congress. Though the GOP has had control of the House ever since, control of the Senate for most of that time, and control of the White House for the past four years, government outlays just keep growing. Ronald Reagan, by contrast, never had a mandate over the House and rarely a friendly majority in the Senate, yet he managed to at least restrain the beast somewhat.

In order to tell the story, Scarborough recounts the early days of the Class of 1994. There were quite a few young Turks that entered Congress at that time, and at 31, Scarborough was not the least bit out of place. The new breed really thought that scaling back the scope of the federal government would be easy since they were the elected representatives of the people, they had a majority, and it was so obviously the right thing to do.

It just didn't work out that way, however. As Joe recounts, the new Republican congressional masters merely redirected the flow of federal dollars from Democrat districts to Republican districts. If a new guy raised a stink about it, he was told in no uncertain terms that party loyalty trumped all, and if the line weren't towed and the votes cast as directed, the GOP leadership would target the rebel for election defeat.

The best parts of the book describe meetings that Scarborough was present for where senior Republicans proceeded to browbeat rooms full of young congressmen on the need for party loyalty. There was a party line to tow, and the young revolutionaries did not author it. The old guys called the tune, and they had but one priority, which was keeping the cash flow in place.

Scarborough quotes Reagan's description of this process: "Tax, spend, and elect."

A sad book, but a real eye opener.

                  5 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable.......2005-03-02

I really enjoyed this book. As a 20 year old who has aspirations to run for Senate or House of Reps... this book gives me a really good idea of what to expect. Congressman Joe isn't afraid to expose the dirty laundry of not only the Democrats but his fellow Republicans. According to Joe, we spend way too much. It's ridiculous where our tax dollars are going to.

Congressman Joe did a really good job on this book, and I am a huge watcher of his show whenever I can watch it.

                        Book Description
