Is there a more gifted artist in the world than Judy Chicago? While men continue to pretend that women artists do not even exist, Chicago has fought all the male paradigms and WON! Her gut-wrenchingly honest writing will inspire a lot of fear among males who are trying to keep women from showing their work, but every once in a while I feel that women have nothing to worry about as far as that goes: because artists like Judy Chicago continue to astonish all with her brilliance!
A truly great book.......1998-12-22
It seems that while Women continue to produce some of the most important art work of our time, there are many men in the art world and in criticism who wish to pretend that the most courageous Women's voices are not heard. I salute Judy Chicago for combatting what these men have perpetrated upon us as artists and as Women. She is so courageous, so forthright, never one to shy away from speaking the truth at all times even as she questions 'truth'. Her experiences with her Black lover are also fascinating, and it seems that now that Women and African Americans are joining to fight patriarchal assumptions/proscriptions, we are better able to appreciate the efforts of Judy Chicago to proclaim the relations of artistic struggle and the struggle of civil rights. A WONDERFUL artist.

A beautiful and powerful book by a great Woman artist, an artist who has never allowed the white male patriarchal art world to dismiss her work (although they are still trying). I found her experience with her black lover and her rejection of white male attitudes touching and stirring. A fine book that questions the male attempt to dismiss women from art.

A good treatment of the re financing process. Geared more for the investor than the individual home buyer, the line-by-line analysis offers valuable detail on the facts behind the numbers and builds the actual calculations nicely.
While I have some philisophical differences about some few details of the valuations the author proposes, I found it a useful counterpoint and good check-list for investing.

This book draws upon both musicology and cultural history to argue that French musical meanings and values from 1898 to 1914 are best explained not in terms of contemporary artistic movements but of the political culture. During these years, France was undergoing many subtle yet profound political changes. Nationalist leagues forged new modes of political activity, as Jane F. Fulcher details in this important study, and thus the whole playing field of political action was enlarged. Investigating this transitional period in light of several recent insights in the areas of French history, sociology, political anthropology, and literary theory, Fulcher shows how the new departures in cultural politics affected not only literature and the visual arts but also music. Having lost the battle of the Dreyfus affair (legally, at least), the nationalists set their sights on the art world, for they considered France's artistic achievements the ideal means for furthering their conception of "French identity." French Cultural Politics and Music: From the Dreyfus Affair to the First World War illustrates the ways in which the nationalists effectively targeted the music world for this purpose, employing critics, educational institutions, concert series, and lectures to disseminate their values by way of public and private discourses on French music. Fulcher then demonstrates how both the Republic and far Left responded to this challenge, using programs and institutions of their own to launch counterdiscourses on contemporary musical values. Perhaps most importantly, this book fully explores the widespread influence of this politicized musical culture on such composers as d'Indy, Charpentier, Magnard, Debussy, and Satie. By viewing this fertile cultural milieu of clashing sociopolitical convictions against the broader background of aesthetic rivalry and opposition, this work addresses the changing notions of "tradition" in music--and of modernism itself. As Fulcher points out, it was the traditionalist faction, not the Impressionist one, that eventually triumphed in the French musical realm, as witnessed by their "defeat" of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring.

The reality of working with people.......2007-09-14
Recognising what is toxic to you is perhaps a good starting point. Many of us spend more time with the people we work with than those we've chosen to spend our lives with. Most of us make assumptions that what offends or upsets us is the same for everyone else. This is not so.
In this book, Dr Lubit provides - with humour - descriptions of different types of managers and of different management techniques that can make working life hell.
Being aware of toxic behaviour and being able to manage its impact are two quite separate things. Dr Lubit provides insights into the former and resources to help individuals and groups deal with the latter.
I've had this book on my management bookshelf since it was published and find it an excellent resource both on a personal level and as part of mentoring other staff.

I wasn't sure I would like this book. The topic of workplace psychology can be done wrong in so many ways. You can present it too clinically and thus lack any practicality. And you can slide the other way and shower the user with pop psychology check-lists and acronyms.
This book walks the ideal path deftly and presents practical workplace issues with the right blend of psychology background and practical wisdom on how to handle individuals with personality issues.
The book is organized by disorder. Each type of personality is presented in it's own chapter with what to look for. As well as how to handle that individual as a boss, a coworker and as a subordinate.
A fascinating read on it's own, and practical advice for people stuck in tough jobs where they have to contend with coworkers who have personality problems.

Lubit's volume, "Coping with Toxic Managers and Subordinates," should be considered a standard reference for veteran and new professional staff, experienced and beginning managers, and leaders of all non-profit organizations, especially cultural ones. Colleagues have said that these conclusions apply to all organizations.
Non-profits and cultural organizations face major management challenges today. For example, while the number of museums has increased, there has been a great decrease in total funding. To stay competitive, these organizations have had to make fundamental changes in their operations and rely on a new breed of managers and professionals. This has been complicated by strong internal resistance to change. As a result, many cultural organizations find themselves unable to harness the talents of their staff and, instead, find productivity decreasing and morale dropping rapidly. Practical guide for getting results.......2003-12-15
This book is an excellent handbook for managers who struggle with motivating 'challenging' people. It enables the reader to quickly identify types of toxic managers and provides guidance on effectively dealing with each type. Should be required reading for anyone responsible for improving company/individual performance.
Toxic costs: heal the pain........2003-12-15
This author offers clear, concise writing on a classic business problem: how to work with difficult people. Who doesn't work with at least 1 difficult person? What organization does not suffer productivity or financial loss from at least 1 toxic manager?
As I read the well-defined descriptions of Toxic Managers, I couldn't help but recall the many faces of those difficult people that have crossed my own work path over the past 24 years, and how I might have dealt with them differently under Roy Lubit's construct. Surely you'll experience similar learning and benefit, as you hear what the author has to say about how to deal with the difficult people that you encounter in your work life.
This book does a tremendous service by reminding us that work IS personal after all; that organizations are organic systems made up of human beings with personalities, traits, and problems that we cannot simply turn off or leave at home, like robots. Tommy Lee down to the knee.......2007-07-17
As it says in Chapter one, when his johnson is speaking to him, the only thing anyone really wants to know is how long it is and he doesn't tell. He does tell movingly about the day a little boy died in his pool but mostly to blame others. Lucky for him, the jury believed him, but he couldn't afford a lifeguard? Seems a litle easy for him, as does everything else in this book, like his affinity for "big girls," his luck at getting pilots who were coked out to land safely and generally, worshipping his Greek family, particularly his mom who must have loved the video and allegations from "Pamela" that he gave her hepatitis. As he's coaching people how to have sex while driving, you gotta love how the Lord protects drunks, as they always walk away from accident scenes. Tommy walks out of jail, head high, missing his friends, the cockroaches.

I bought this book for my girlfriend and she loved it, she read it super fast and loved every minute. She isn't the biggest Tommy fan but she really enjoyed the way the book was structured and Tommy's writing style. She is now making me and all her friends read it.

At Bull Run, two inexperienced, ill-trained and poorly led armies clashed in the opening engagement of the American Civil War. Culminating in a stalwart defensive fight by Stonewall Jackson's Virginia Brigade, this book is the story of the Confederacy's first victory. I have enjoyed the candor of this book. While it can be said that the author looks at things via the rose glasses of "elite life" in Africa I do agree with much of what he has stated. Care must be taken however to see that many expatriates who throng the shores of Africa do so with fat salaries and exclusive housing to live lifestyles that would never be possible in America or Europe. This behind the wire lifestyle has the tendency to jade the our view and corrupt our ability to look clearly from ground level. I have spend 17 years in Africa, not behind the Ivory towers and five star hotels but in the bush and with the people carrying out aid projects that do make a difference because they are done at a local level and with families rather than governments.I would also note that, while governments in Africa balk against accountability so do our friends in the IMF and World Bank. Money is handed out like toilet paper and little is done to truly assure its proper use. After all its not my money.
An excellent study.......2007-08-25
As a student of history, I had to wonder why Africa, which was mostly freed from its colonial past by the 1960s, has steadily deteriorated since then. This book systematically and succinctly explains many of the issues that have plagued the continent and has explained away many of the excuses that have served to keep Africa from developing economically and politically.
I particularly liked Calderisi's deflating of the slave trade argument. The slave trade is one era removed from modern Africa, with the 150 years or so of the colonial period between now and then. And yet is is used to explain away a lack of devlopment in Africa as if people today are still traumatized by a memory they cannot possibly have, any more than I have an "ancestral memory" of my people being slaves to the Romans. Slavery has not been, unfortunately, unknown in human history. And yet, peoples have managed to go forward and continue to build and have great dreams.
Africa needs help, there can be no doubt of that. Despite significant mineral wealth and agricultural potential the continent continues to fall deeper and deeper into poverty. Only by undertstanding the root causes can we work a solution.
The only weakness to this book is Calderesi's insistence on putting his own personal life into discussion, which really has nothing to do with the subject matter of the book.
Candid, brave, caring, & most importantly - relevant........2007-08-09
Brilliant. Well-written. Superbly addresses the point (why foreign aid isn't working in Africa). Calderisi obviously cares very much - enough to say what needs to be said.
I read this book a year ago and still remember it vividly, which attests to how succinctly Calderisi conveys important information.
a few insights and some great stories mixed with sloppy analysis.......2007-03-04
Calderisi states early on that this book is "a personal essay." That turns out to be code for "This doesn't have to be particularly coherent, nor do I have to back up my recommendations with systematic evidence." Finally, the writing is not particularly inviting, with lines like, "unlike photographs, economies cannot be developed in a dark room" (p. 171) or "Africa has been in my blood since the age of fifteen" (p. 35).
However, Amartya Sen once wrote that "there is a strong case for judging a book by its best contributions, not its weakest points." [1] Calderisi worked for the World Bank in Africa for many years: he has many interesting stories and a great deal of perspective. He gives the World Bank's perspective on the Chad-Cameroon oil pipeline, the now notorious Structural Adjustment Programs of the 1980s, and many more personal stories. While there is certainly more to these stories than the Bank's perspective, understanding the Bank's reasoning is insightful.
In addition to these stories and perspectives, the author makes ten recommendations, many of them unfortunately unsupported by the body of the book. Most of the recommendations seem sensible (as do many recommendations that haven't worked, as William Easterly has indicated [2]), but Calderisi gives no detail as to how one would implement them nor does he successfully build up to them. I may not be confident that Jeffrey Sachs's plan [3] would be successful, but I give him credit for having thought it through and outlined it in significant technical detail.
The book begins much worse than it ends. In the first chapter, "Looking for Excuses," the author argues that many traditional arguments for African poverty are false; but the reasoning tends to be specious. Speaking of both the Cold War and colonialism, he argues that it is difficult to make the link between those events and Africa's problems, but then he attributes clear causality to what he calls the "benefits" of the Cold War and colonialism: it's not clear how we know that they caused benefits but not that they caused problems. In his argument that the manipulation of African peoples by Cold War movers is not responsible, he says, "there is little evidence that the superpowers did more damage than African states themselves." Even if they did the same amount of damage, that would be double the damage African countries would have done on their own. Elsewhere in the book, Calderisi relies on a few select quotes to demonstrate that every month in recent African history is "replete with tyranny and injustice" (p. 63). True or untrue, a statement like that deserves a decent standard of evidence.
I'm not sorry that I read this book, but I'd recommend you put William Easterly's White Man's Burden and Jeffrey Sachs's The End of Poverty higher on your list.

The Trouble with Africa.......2007-01-08
Having recently traveled to Africa for the first time, I left that continent, as did my fellow travelers, wondering what could be done to better the lives of the people we met. It seemed that the troubles were monumental, and that solutions would be nearly impossible. As I read Mr. Calderisi's book, I felt that here were the concrete, rational ideas that are needed to begin the transformation. It made me wish I had the expertise and leadership abilities to get started on it NOW and I only hope that in the very near future that someone with Mr. Calderisi's insight and knowledge will make this a priority and start implementing his ten ways of changing Africa. A truly thought-provoking and inspirational book.

Thorburn was not only a masterly illustrator, but also a Fellow of the Zoological Society, and his attention to the detail of color and plumage resulted in a work which was both a delight to look at and an accurate and illuminating reference as well.
Now presented here in one complete volume, compiled from the final editions of each of the four originals, there are over 400 species depicted. These are arranged, as Thorburn himself says in his preface to the work, so as `to represent as many species as possible of the same family, on the same plate, and drawn to the same scale.' This not only gives the plates great richness and variety, but also `gives the reader an opportunity of comparing the various proportions and divergence of color in closely related birds'.
The birds are almost all drawn directly from life, the result of many years of study and observation, and Thorburn provides his own descriptive text throughout. He also gives notes of the distribution, nests, eggs, food, song and habits, backing up all his own knowledge, as he modestly admits, with the best of the authoritative works of the time, including Yarrell, Macgillivray, Lilford, Dresser, Saunders, Seebohm and many others. The final editions of the books enabled him to include `some rare warblers' and various newcomers and rarities, and there are 82 large full-color plates in all. The contents pages, as well as listing all the varieties plate by plate, give both the common and Latin names, and the descriptive text of each bird is headed by its Order, Family and Subfamily.
This is a classic work for every lover of bird life, and for anyone who admires and appreciates superb illustration.
