This is a very nice address book! It is described as spiral-bound, but the actual spiral hardware is covered by the book binding. Much nicer than I expected it to be.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but nothing special either.......2007-03-17

Robert Kirkman, better known as the creator of the brilliant and riveting Walking Dead for Image Comics, gets to weave some super hero shenanigans with his re-booted Marvel Team-Up. The first storyarc finds Spider-Man and Wolverine teaming up and taking on a murderous, mutant teen with some interesting abilities, and as the book goes on we get to see Mr. Fantastic and Dr. Strange team up, along with Iron Man and the Hulk to boot. Kirkman's dialogue is sometimes witty, but his stories are nothing we haven't seen a thousand times before. His use of an evil, alternate reality Iron Man is pretty nifty though, and the interplay between Spidey and Wolverine is nicely handled as well. Scott Kolins' artwork is solid throughout as well, albeit a bit too cartoony at spots. All in all, Marvel Team-Up: The Golden Child is a nice ode to the original series from the 70's, and it's worth a look for those craving safe and harmless super hero action.

4 out of 5 stars Just like the old MTU, with better artwork.......2005-06-26

This glitzy team-up series is a worthy successor to the original 1970s version... It has a lot of the same elements -- quick action, somewhat thin plots, supervillans you don't really care that much about but look forward to seeing defeated (Titannus, the mutant kid named Paul) and lots and lots of Marvel superdudes, with Spiderman as the focal point. So far so good. The artwork by Scott Kolins is nice -- realistic, but not filled with fetishistic, super-exaggerated body-builder muscles... The introduction of an evil, alternate-reality Iron Man is fun... he's the bad guy that gives this book its bite. In short, this isn't a like a great work of art or anything, but it was a fun read. I kinda wish I hadn't spent the money on it, but I enjoyed reading it... Above-average wham-bam superhero stuff.

A Comprehensive Guide to Identifying More than 35 Species of Urban Hipsters

Like most wildlife, Urban Hipsters offer valuable and entertaining opportunities for observation and study. To date, casual students of wild Hipsters have been left without a tattooed ankle to stand on, as even the simple tasks of identifying and classifying each species have never been completed.  The Hip, though simpleminded, are wily.
Now, however, this cutting-edge manual by world-renowned hipthologist and dinner-party favorite Josh Aiello allows even the most amateur of observers to differentiate a Mod (Angophilia dandyum) from a Punk (Rebellium ostentatia), to identify the velvet rope-circumvention abilities unique to EuroTrash, and to recognize the symptoms of Ex-Frat–carried Loafer-and-Wallet Disease with confidence and ease.  A Field Guide to the Urban Hipster covers mating habits, the origins of species, and natural habitats for all species one may encounter, regardless of terrain.
The result of over ten dateless years spent in the field, A Field Guide to the Urban Hipster is sure to educate and delight for generations to come.  Lavishly illustrated by former pet caricaturist Matthew Shultz, this comprehensive guide is the ultimate handbook for the urban observer.

3 out of 5 stars Nicely written, but misses the mark................2006-07-13

This book is an interesting read, or at least partially interesting anyway. But it is seriously flawed. For one thing, it includes profiles of non-hipsters or scenesters (which are close, but not the same) and lumps them in with hipsters.

For example: A Raver is NOT a hipster. They are Scenesters. A Goth is a Non-Hipster. Hipsters wouldnt be caught dead with Goths, and vice versa. A true Hipster remains deep and philosophical, yet shallow and savvy enough to know where they belong. " Euro Trash" are Non-Hipsters are well, as are "Ex-Frats". There is nothing more Un-Hipster than belonging to a fraternity, even if it was in the past tense. And furthemore, it uses cliches which arent quite that funny. If you want a far MORE ACCURATE discription of the true Hipsters and their psyche, buy "Hipster Handbook".

1 out of 5 stars stupid and dull NOT genius.......2004-07-12

Gee, i'll tell all my friends to write reviews for me and call me a genius when my book comes out. That's it!

Come on....I can't believe a publisher actually took on this writer....he stinks!

The book is stupid everyone....don't buy it. Don't buy the next book either....it's all mean. Let's all ask Josh what makes him so cool?

1 out of 5 stars Um...did Josh Aiello write all these reviews?.......2004-04-29

The similar natures of the reviews written here lead me to believe that Josh Aiello is pulling a Bebe Buell and reviewing his own book over and over again, giving it five stars again and again from different "readers" in various states.

Nice try, but this book definitely misses the mark. I sort of feel badly that it had to follow the publication of the Hipster Handbook, which is WAY more accurate and WAY funnier than The Field Guide to the Urban Hipster.

I've read both, and while The Hipster Handbook absolutely positively nails it, the Field Guide to the Urban Hipster feels like it was written by my sixty year old father trying to be funny about kids today and picking up only about 20% of the general gist of the thing

          1 out of 5 stars Lame.......2004-04-23

After leafing through this book, I assumed the author must be about 60 years old. The "insights" he makes about what is hip seem to require about that much distance from youth. This is a cliched look at youth and trends.

1 out of 5 stars Not "cool" enough.......2004-01-20

This book is written for people who need to belittle in order to feel good about themselves. Not only is it a waste of paper, it's a waste of time and money. It could have much more interesting and funny, but it was trying too hard.

What is so great about the writer? What "catagory" does he fit into?

          Book Description

In 1980, art house audience word of mouth about an unusual new movie, Return of the Secaucus Seven, launched the career of director John Sayles and with him the era of the independent filmmaker. Sayles has remained a maverick, writing, directing, editing and even acting in his own films. He has directed such diverse films as The Brother from Another Planet, Matewan, Eight Men Out, Passion Fish, and Lone Star, and received two Academy Award nominations. Here is the chronicle of Sayles' career-his inauspicious beginning and his work in fiction, theatre, music videos and television. A chapter is devoted to each of his feature films: funding, plot, important characters, and a look at the language, setting, and politics. Sayles' technical development-his camera work, editing, musical arrangement and mise-en-scne-is also traced.

1 out of 5 stars This is the most incompetent book I have ever opened.......2006-12-03

Chapter 12 is titled "Accounting Principles" and has information that was required in chapter 1 but not fully explained. I can safely say that when I am done with this class I would NEVER put this on my bookshelf. Just to put your reservations about my integrity, I got an A in both accounting courses that required this text. It is so poorly written and has the semblance of a village idiot with ADHD running off at the mouth. The level of incompetence in the entire book is so great I was astonished at it being printed. The other "optional" books are equally sickening. The cost is so high for such trash. I will avoid any class that requires a text from the Wiley Publishing Group. My school is retiring the book next spring. I can only assume it is due to the gross incompetence of the text.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book..........2006-03-03

Any books covering a heavy topic like accounting must be entertaining, informative and layed out properly so that the reader can follow along without too many problems. This book does all that and more, by providing real-life examples and lots of information regarding the application of accounting. Good shipping & great price directly from amazon.

I used this book for a class and love it. It is very easy to use with plenty of pictures and charts demonstrating how things are done. It is bery descriptive and an excellent buy if you want to learn basic skills before you get into Accouting classes.

            Book Description

Written in solitary confinement, Kody Scott's memoir of sixteen years as a gangbanger in Los Angeles was a searing bestseller and became a classic, published in ten languages, with more than 300,000 copies in print in the United States alone. After pumping eight blasts from a sawed-off shotgun at a group of rival gang members, twelve-year-old Kody Scott was initiated into the L.A. gang the Crips. He quickly matured into one of the most formidable Crip combat soldiers, earning the name "Monster" for committing acts of brutality and violence that repulsed even his fellow gang members. When the inevitable jail term confined him to a maximum-security cell, a complete political and personal transformation followed: from Monster to Sanyika Shakur, black nationalist, member of the New Afrikan Independence Movement, and crusader against the causes of gangsterism. In a document that has been compared to The Autobiography of Malcolm X and Eldridge Cleaver's Soul on Ice, Shakur makes palpable the despair and decay of America's inner cities and gives eloquent voice to one aspect of the black ghetto experience today.

5 out of 5 stars Ought to be on a lot more reading lists!.......2007-08-11

Monster Kody Scott, leading gunman of the Eight Tray Gangstas, recounts his gory murders, robberies and exploits as a member of the notorious Crips. A sickening tide of violence visited this man's life in the span of a decade, from gunning down enemy Bloods to facing death at the hands of rival Crips.

Whether you're an at-risk youth or an activist against the system, you need to read Shakur bare his soul to deliver a message about the cycle of violence in South Central, the descent into crack cocaine during the mid-1980s and the city authorities' chronic failure to address the gang warfare through jobs and youth programs instead of a military-style police crackdown.

Its too bad that Shakur doesn't delve deeper into the Black Nationalist ideology that eventually steered him away from his fellow Eight Trays like Crazy De and Lil' Tray. Why not challenge the reader's own beliefs about race and class in America, even if Black Nationalism falls short as a revolutionary approach?

That said, this is just the type of book that ought to make it on a lot more reading lists in America's schools. Almost anyone with a conscience can connect with this book, even if Shakur's life makes you want to scream at the top of your lungs.

2 out of 5 stars a serial killers plee for sympathy.......2007-08-02

This book would be a much more interesting read if the author would have just presented his actions without trying to fake his deep moral feelings and such. The stories he relates of his life on the streets are of course interesting, giving you a window into the life of a remorseless serial murderer. He shows very little regret for his actions or sympathy for his victims, about the best he can come up with is that they should not have been there, in his way. He searches through most of the book for someone to blame, obvious targets like white people (americans), cops, the prison system are pointed out, no surprise there. He constantly compares himself and his fellow criminals to the military, attempting to make them seem in some way noble I guess, but it falls flat. He even goes so far as to compare himself (favorably) to the president, when he tattoo's his gang name on his neck, saying the president lacks the conviction to tattoo "republican" or "capitalist" on his own neck. It's silly thoughts like this that lessen the impact of this book, and just make him seem naive, a child in a man's skin.

Overall, some good writing in between a lot of propaganda and excuses. And what is the point of replacing "understand" with "overstand" throughout the book??

            3 out of 5 stars Tough.......2007-04-13

This book is tough! When I read this, I was living in a small town in the Northwest, with a low occurrence of violent crime and an obscenely high average education level (lot's of dishwashers with Master's degrees), but nonetheless, while reading this book, I would find myself riding around in my friends' cars, and wondering why I'd left my "gat" @ home. Considering I don't even own a gun, that is fairly impressive. The book is engrossing, entertaining and thought provoking, all in equal measure. I mean it's no Autobiography of Malcolm X, but I'd say it is definitely a biography worth reading.

            1 out of 5 stars Who Cares.......2007-03-16

This book is all about some gang member who polluted LA.
There is nothing REAL about this and everything he does is stupid.
Smart people keep their noses clean and live in tough HOODS and have hard lives to live also.
They grow up and don't spend time in prison and bragg about how tough they are because they carry a gun.
Growing up in the HOOD don't mean you need to be a monster.
Nothing but excuses and all they did was make living in America a worse place.
All the dummys follow in there path.
Put them in jail and keep them there, the world needs no more phony gangbangers...thats for sure.
            Hard luck...bull....
Your just weak to begin with.

            3 out of 5 stars not bad.......2007-01-27

Not a bad read but not a great read either. I found this book easy to read and not two deep.

                    Book Description

On the afternoon of Election Day 2004, the world was abuzz with the news: Exit polls indicated that John Kerry would win the election and become the next president of the United States. That proved not to be the case.

According to the official count-that is the number of votes tallied, not necessarily the number of votes cast-George W. Bush beat Kerry by a margin of three million votes. The exit polls however had predicted a margin of victory for Kerry of five million votes. In every "battleground" state across the nation the final tally swung clearly beyond the exit poll's margin of error to favor the president.

How can one explain this eight-million-vote discrepancy between the Election Day exit polls and the official count? Either the exit poll data was wrong or the official count was wrong.

Was the 2004 Presidential Election Stolen? analyzes the exit poll data and looks at documented examples of conventional vote suppression and outright vote fraud. It investigates the possibility that enough election fraud occurred to determine the outcome of the presidential race. And it asks the question why neither the government, nor the Democratic Party, nor any major media organization did their own investigation.

Steve Freeman has a PhD in organization studies from MIT's Sloan School of Management. He is a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Organizational Dynamics, where he teaches research methods and survey design (a domain that includes polling). He has received four national awards for best research paper of the year-on four different topics in three different fields.

Joel Bleifuss, a journalist of 23 years, is the editor of In These Times. In his 18 years there, he has had more articles cited as one of the Top Censored Stories of the Year by Project Censored than any other journalist.

5 out of 5 stars Why isn't this masterpiece of research and analysis better known?.......2007-06-26

This is a phenomenal book in every way. It was also very difficult to read--not because it is written badly (it's not), but because the book makes it abundantly clear that the 2004 election was stolen--and our democracy failed us, badly. Why didn't this book get a lot of attention from the press? Why was it not reviewed in the New York Times? Why are so few people aware of this book and its first-rate scholarship?

5 out of 5 stars A service to our country, a tribute to science and reason.......2007-03-08

This book uses the science of statistics to destroy any notion that the 2004 election was accurately and honestly recorded. Every excuse for the exit polls is refuted. It may take a Ph.D in statistics to write this book but the facts are so clear, anyone with a grasp of arithmetic and open to reality can understand the book and appreciate its warning to us.

Look at the other reviews. See which ones are reasoned and supported by details. See which ones are fact free dismissals.

1 out of 5 stars Wah wah wah, cry some more liberals.......2007-02-05

This book is nothing but whines and tears from the Democrat Party that lost the election in 2004. Over two years later and the Democrats still cannot accept their loss. The whole premise of this book is that exit polls showed Kerry slightly ahead so Kerry was the real winner. Too bad for the Democrat Party that exit polls do not decide elections.

There are a number of valid explanations for the disparity between the exit polls and the actual results. The most obvious one is that Bush voters tend to dislike the biased liberal media so they don't respond to their polls or they lie to them in spite. I know if someone from CBS came up to me and asked how I voted I would spit on them. The 2004 election was just a short month after the liberal biased media tried to slam Bush with forged memos typed in Microsoft Word 1973 edition so anti-liberal media sentiment among conservatives was even higher then than it is now.

America elected Bush and liberals just cannot stand it. This book is just comical. Liberals need to take their own advice and "MOVE ON".

5 out of 5 stars Your duty as an American citizen is to read this book.......2007-01-09

Every American who takes the integrity of elections for granted must read this book because its evidence is so strong and its conclusions are so shocking. The first author is an MIT-trained expert in statistical analysis in social sciences, and the book is chock full of hard evidence, not conspiracy theories. Here is a terse summary of the evidence.

                    1. Systematic Discrepancies Between Exit Poles and Ballot Counts

Discrepancies between poll exit interviews and official vote counts are far beyond the limits of statistical probability in many places.
                    * Exit poles closely tracked vote counts in precincts that used paper ballots in the 2000 and 2004 elections.
                    * Exit poles diverged by 6-7% from certified vote counts on electronic voting machines.
                    * The discrepancies increased in proportion to how important a state or precinct vote was in determining the electoral vote and whether the voting in that polity was administered and tallied by Republicans.
                    * In 2000, 2002 and 2004, virtually all large discrepancies favor Republicans, which coincidence has odds of occurrence of one in millions.

For the past 40 years, poll exit interviews have proven highly reliable checks on integrity of elections. Exit polling methods have been refined to account for numerous secondary distortions in accuracy, such as different response rates to exit poles by various demographic and political groups.

The cumulative effects of these divergences were to give Bush-Cheney both elections in spite of the strong evidence from exit poles that they did not win in either 2000 or 2004.

                    2. Vote Suppression

Election officials have practiced voter suppression for specific demographic groups and precincts. For example, in Florida
                    * Criteria for accepting voter registrations, allowing slightly defective ballots, voter identification requirements at the polls, acceptance of absentee ballots, and other factors affecting the vote count differ by precinct, and tend toward looser standards in Republican precincts.
                    * African Americans tend to vote Democratic, while Cuban-Hispanics tend to vote Republican. Voting machines and problem resolution systems tend to be inadequate in African American areas and adequate in Cuban-Hispanic areas. Lists intended to exclude former felons from voter roles (done in no other country in the world) contained race information and were assembled with very rough name matching, but virtually excluded Hispanic names.

The methods of voter suppression used in several states are too numerous to recount here.

                    3. Insecure Voting Machines

DRE (direct recording electronic) voting machines are exceptionally prone to error or fraud yet by 2004 they recorded about about 1/3 of votes and their share is growing. Computer experts unanimously condemn as DRE machines as unreliable, easy targets for fraud, and lacking in a paper trail for verification.

DRE voting machines are virtually unregulated black boxes, compared to slot machines in Nevada. For example,
                    * The state of Nevada has access to all gambling software. It is illegal for casinos to use software that is not on file. Software for electronic voting machines is a trade secret.
                    * Board inspectors show up unannounced at casinos to compare computer chips to those on file. No checks of voting machines are required, and even if an election official wants to, he or she would not have a chip to compare to the one in the machine.
                    * Slot machine manufacturers are subject to background checks that last 6 months or more, and any uncovered criminal record is investigated. Citizens have no way of knowing, for example, if e-voting programmers or industry executives have been convicted of fraud. In fact, at least one key technical executive in a voting machine company has a previous conviction for fraud.
                    * Slot machines are certified by a public agency that maintains and arms length relationship with manufacturers. Public questions are invited. Voting machines are certified by for-profit companies chosen and paid by the manufacturers. No public information is available on how the testing is done.
                    * If a gambler believes he or she has been cheated, the casino is required to contact the Gaming Control Board, which has investigators on call around the clock. Investigators can open machines to inspect their internal mechanisms and their records of recent gambling outcomes. If a voter believes a machine has manipulated his/her vote, in most cases the only recourse is to call the Board of Elections to lodge a complain that may or may not be investigated.

In 2005 a commission headed by Jimmy Carter and James Baker called for an auditable paper trail for all votes. In Florida, and to some extent nationally, Republicans oppose expenditures to provide paper trails for elections. Democrats support such measures.

                    4. Defects in Electoral Procedures

In 2004, President Jimmy Carter's foundation, which specializes in monitoring elections in other countries, stated that "Some basic international requirements for a fair election are missing in Florida," the most significant of which are: (1) a non-partisan electoral commission or official, (2) uniformity in voting procedures.

                    5. Intervention by the Supreme Court in 2000

In the 2000 presidential election, had the US Supreme Court allowed the Florida recount to go ahead as ordered by Judge Allen, Gore would have clearly won.
                    * In 2000, Florida Judge Terry Allen, overseer of the 2004 Florida vote, ruled for a recount and that the clear intent of every vote should be counted when it could be ascertained as per the standard set by the Florida State Supreme Court. Republicans petitioned the US Supreme Court to stop the Florida recount ordered by Judge Allen and the Republican majority on the Supreme Court ordered the recount stopped.
                    * So called "overvotes" (ballots having improper marks outside the check boxes) that were rejected by voting machines were later examined by researchers and classified. When the rejected overvotes with clear intent were counted, Gore received 68,200 votes and Bush received 23,802; therefore, Gore won Florida by over 40,000 votes which would have overturned the certified 537 vote advantage given to Bush by the Republican administered voting process. Even if only the category of rejected "overvotes" had been included in the certified vote where a candidate's name was written in and the ballot was properly marked for the same candidate, Gore would have won.

                    6. Fear of Raising such an Explosive Issue

The media, exit polling companies, and the Democratic Party focus on anecdotal evidence of fraud. They deemphasize the most competent professional analyses, which establish that fraud was extremely likely in many elections, including two presidential elections, from 2000 to 2004. Systemic fraud in presidential elections is so explosive that mainstream institutions avoid seriously raising the issue.

The book explains many other types of fraud that contributed a few (ten or hundred) thousand votes each that were more than enough to account for the Bush margin of victory in the popular vote and the electoral college.

                    7. Conclusion

The book is full of statistical tests of the probability of the outcomes in the 2000, 2002 and 2004 elections. The authors conclude that systemic fraud must be present in American elections during this period. In the 2006 midterm elections, the gains by Democrats were significantly less than the gains indicated by exit polls. The problem has not gone away.
Actual and potential electoral fraud could be greatly reduced by some basic reforms - such as insisting on nonpartisan electoral commissions, paper trails for all votes, and effective poll exit surveys). Obviously Americans must address these issues before any others in the electoral system.

Politicians need public backing and outcry to fix the growing systematic fraud occurring in U.S. elections.

How can a democratic country allow voting machines that cannot be verified? How can it let interested parties run elections? How can the media stand by while people are not allowed to vote? The answer is that a democratic country can't do this and remain democratic.

This book provides a huge amount of statistical evidence that the official results do not match what actually hapenned in the 2004 election. It's very convincing, and hopefully will demonstrate to many people that we will lose our democracy if we don't demand fair elections.
