I am extremely intereted in the relationshiop between morality and dress and was immediately drawn to this book. Costume has been used throughout the ages to advertise social status, distinguish genders, and as a reaction to current politics, and has therefore always been controversial. However, Ribeiro has made this incendiary topic extremely dry, perpetually refering to moralists' problems with the fashions of their times without connecting the issues of decency to anything: politics, cultural issues, etc. The inclusion of more specific fashion scandals-their causes and results-- would have made this a far more enjoyable and poignant read as well. This book is a decent chronology of sumtuary laws, but it's missing a theme more coherent than "moralists had a problem with all types of clothing at some time."

Too easy.......2007-07-21

I Have worked nearly all of the Sunday NYTimes crosswords. Was really looking forward to the same or higher level of difficulty and originality. Unfortunately, this didn't have it. You would think that puzzles published in DC by such a well respected paper would offer a more challenging bit of entertainment.

I Loved It!.......2006-12-13

I guess you would have to say I'm a New York Times crossword puzzle fanatic. But because this book was edited by Fred Piscop, known to me from his occasional puzzles at the Times, I decided to give this collection a try. Well, I was amply rewarded. These are moderately difficult Sunday puzzles (and you know what I mean if you do the Times Sunday puzzles) which are just enough different from those in the Times that they represented a pleasant challenge for me. Piscop's sense of humor, as seen in the definitions, is unique (and different from that of the NYT's Will Shortz) and I literally found myself laughing out loud at times.

This is an excellent book to teach you how to invest for the highest yield. I should add that Jeremy Siegel's books are also good for this type of investing. Say bye to the Apples, Microsofts, retailers, Googles, and other growth stocks, and hello to high yield, income producing securities. The key is to buy and hold forever, reinvesting your dividends along the way. As the years unfold you will find your portfolio grow larger and larger. Who cares if the market is up or down? Let it go down, and your reinvested dividends will buy you more shares.
This book is highly recommended.

A very different investment book.......2007-01-06

This is a very different investment book. While the books one typically sees suggest ways to get rich-- that is, to accumulate capital-- as quickly as possible, this short, readable book suggests that those near or in retirement should be thinking about how to deploy their resources in a way that maximizes their income. That is, staying comfortable is more important than getting rich.

Stein and DeMuth explain that most investment fads are not only unsuitable for older investors, but, worse, they just don't work. They make a point that many people who lost their money in the market meltdown a few years ago should have thought about: If an investment is too complicated to understand, then it should be avoided. In the end, there's no magic bullet; diversification and adherence to investment basics will pay off. The body of the book is devoted to explaining how to do that.

The book discusses various types of bonds, dividend-paying stocks, real estate investment trusts, and annuities. The one thing that is mentioned in every chapter is the basic principle that risk and reward are in balance; the only way to get a high reward is to take more risk. Striking the correct balance is, of course, an individual decision, and the most important part of the book is the discussion about how to combine various types of investments in in a way that balances risk and reward. There are numerous sample portfolios and many specific bond and stock funds suggested-- and also numerous cautions that investors need to do their own research before they buy anything. The authors provide a link to their website, which provides current information and links.

A bonus is that unlike many investment books, this one is very readable. The authors don't dumb anything down, but they take pains to explain things without using jargon. Readers familiar with Stein's TV and movie style of delivery will recognize it here, too.

This is a very valuable book that will provide the reader with a lot to think about-- and a good way to do that thinking.

Who knew Fixed Income could be so cool.......2006-06-21

The authors do a great job breaking down an extremely sophisticated asset class so the everyman investor can optimize their returns while minimizing risk(Maximizing the Sharpe ratio).

Their focus on a real return is a smart one. The S&P 500 has underperformed the total return on lowly 3-month Treasury bills for what is now more than 8 years, earning average annual total returns of just 3.2% since early-1998. Over the past decade, the S&P 500 still sports an unimpressive annual total return of just 8.20%, despite containing the best 4-year market performance (1996-2000) since the rally from post-depression lows in the 1930's. YIKES!!!!!! This makes one take pause and consider adjusting the allocation.

Let's just say the "market portfolio" can no longer be considered the S&P 500- This is what Harvard and their endowment managers realized years ago.
A great book that provides a tremendous amount of information and that I will use again and again in the future. Take a look around at fixed income books out there. There aren't many of them, and this is by far the best one.

Income Investing Bible.......2005-12-08

This was the best income investing book I have read. I loved this book, it was superbly well written with practical income investment advice in stocks, bonds (treasuries, corporate, municipal, junk etc) and real estate (REITs). This book would be very useful regardless of the amount of money you have to invest. The authors make specific recommendations without any vague statements. There is income portfolio advice. It is easy to read and I finished it in one sitting. The book had a lot of humor sprinkled throughout. I loved the two stories in one of the earlier chapters in which the authors said that if you understood these 2 stories you would understand the bond market and they were right on! There are plenty of numbers and figures but the authors have accomplished a remarkable feat in that they wrote the subject matter in such a way that any high schooler could understand. Yet the material is far from "dumbed down".

Informative for Everyone.......2005-09-12

I read this book and fealt it was not only informative for us babyboomers but for my children, too.

The main part of the book is on how to combine all of the investments they write on into a portfolio that balances your ability to take risk versus return.

They are witty and they give you a website to use.

Task Force 58 Deals the Japanese Navy a Fatal Blow.......2003-06-19

This book keeps up the tradition of other books in this fine series. This volume describes the action which took place in and around the Marianas Islands in the summer of 1944. The islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Guam were successfully captured and turned into air bases for the big B-29 Superfortresses so they could reach the Japanese homeland. These battles were fought with great savagery on both sides. For example, rather then surrender to the American forces, many Japanese soldiers and civilians threw themselves from cliffs overlooking the Pacific on Saipan.

The Battle of the Philippine Sea is where the Japanese navy ultimately, for all intents and purposes, ceased to be an effective fighting force. However, at the beginning, it was the Japanese who sighted the Americans first. They launched four successive attacks against Admiral Spruance's carriers while Spruance was still searching for the Japanese ships. Thanks to murderous anti-aircraft fire and superior combat air patrol, the Japanese would end up losing over four hundred aircraft in what has become known as the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot". Three Japanese aircraft carriers were also sunk by American submarines and planes. However, this victory was greatly scrutinized. Spruance was criticized for not finding the enemy ships sooner, and for conducting poor air searches. Many believed that the victory could have been even greater than it was had the Japanese been spotted sooner, or had the Americans done a better job of pursuing the fleeing Japanese.

This is a very good book, and the battle is explained expertly with the help of numerous maps and photographs. I highly recommend this book, as well as others in this series. They give the reader a first-hand account of the war at sea.

THIS BOOK IS ANOTHER MANDATORY READING FOR ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN THE EXCHANGE OF CULTURES OF THE INDIGENOUS OF TURTLE ISLAND AND THE AFRICAN, WHICH HAS BEEN GOING ON BEFORE THAT THUG COLUMBUS CAME OVER HERE.

fabulous first full encounter with bell hooks.......2003-06-06

Until now I have only read excerpts from bell hooks' works. Then I recently saw a C-Span program in which bell hooks led a discussion with a college audience. Reminded of the intriguing excerpts I had read, I chose Black Looks as my first full encounter with this intriguing woman's thoughts.

I did not examine the readers' comments on Black Looks until completing the book, but I too would like to take the opportunity to give the book my whole-hearted endorsement for everyone's perusal.

Unlike the reader who began a review highlighting his leftist political affiliation and interracial marriage/family, I DO believe that this book was intended for that individual reader, as it was intended for me, a white female -- and for all men and women of all colors, backgrounds, and sexual orientations. One's skin color, (marriage) partner, children, class status, political affiliation, sexual orientation, and gender, among many other characteristics, do not determine one's dedication to overcoming the racist, heterosexist, capitalist patriarchy. Indeed, I think that this idea is a theme running throughout Black Looks, as evidenced in bell hooks' essays on Clarence Thomas and Madonna.

I do not find incivility in bell hooks' thoughtful expressions and critiques. Rather, I find a much-needed naming of the incivilities that happen to people in this world, due to various "-ism"s and those who espouse them.

Complaints of "bias" or "slant" in bell hooks' essays and other works seem nonsensical to me, when I recall that no human being's thoughts, feelings, and perspective are "objective." Moreover, "objectivity" is not a quality that one desires in cultural criticism, which functions to set forth an alternative point of view that is so often silenced. An individual who feels the need for "objectivity" in Black Looks might seriously question whether any book, television program, song, or other form of media is "objective," including those forms of communication that comprise mass media.

I think that an individual who can accept that this book is for him/her can also begin to look at mass media with a more critical gaze, an activity that is sorely needed after the hours of unquestioning consumption of TV/movies that fills the evenings and weekends of many Americans.

Powerfully Moving.......2001-09-26

I'm biracial . . . my father is white and my mother is black, Latina, and Asian. hooks makes us look deeply and critically at the linkages of race, class, gender, and sexuality in ways that are painfully honest and moving. Oppression is never an easy topic. As she has stated, reading hooks' work should make us feel angry, sad, & uncomfortable. Finally, an intellectual who goes beyond the "taken-for-granted" simplistic non-analysis and makes us THINK DEEPLY! This book is a classic!

Bell Hooks is a Gifted Thinker.......2001-09-26

The cover of this book caught my attention at the library, so I just had to check it out. I must say, Bell Hooks's ideas and opinions are right on the money. She mentions issues such as black male masculinity, feminism, and racism and breaks them down very well. She's not the average traditional black feminist. She's not afraid to talk bad about white folks (like Madonna) and she's brave enough to use the word "white supremacy"; not in a militant way, but more reserved. It's easy to tell she's a liberal, but she's not restricted to traditional left-wing philosophy because of her strong Afro-centric view-points. This is a must read for all Black people, especially Black women who hardly have any intellectual role-model to look up to.

Provocative.......2000-06-30

I probably should mention that I am a white male, sociologist, husband of an African American women, and father of a biracial newborn. I mention this up front because I don't think this book was written with me in mind. I enjoyed it, however, despite disagreeing with many of hooks points and finding her style lacking in balance and civility.

In this book of short essays, hooks appears to gives voice to the suppressed frustrations of many externally "successful" women of color. Therefore, the book may be cathartic for women of color sharing her passionate disappointment in our Eurocentric society, with "White" femininism, and with Black men. With essays entitled "Hot Black Pussy" and "Eating the Other," it should be fairly obvious that this is not the book for someone looking for balanced analysis. Nevertheless, hooks makes many important theoretical contributions regarding femininism and Black liberation.
