Book Description
Ever wanted a quiet place to read? Try the mime library. Wonder why books sometimes wake up cold? Because someone stole the covers. And why do hitmen come after librarians? They know too much, of course. These are just a few of the offbeat insights from the pen of library cartoonist Scott McCullar. You'll discover ancient book preservation techniques, just how ubiquitous E-mail now is, zombie book shelvers, and what books do at night while the library is closed. In what other profession can you so easily reduce the budget-simply by putting it on microfiche?
Customer Reviews:
Highly original and creatively funny!.......1998-10-08
Scott McCullar is perhaps the Gary Larson of library humor. What Larson did to dinosaurs and cows, McCullar has done to the overlooked world of libraries. Funny, inventive cartoons abound in this book. His clear, straightforward art helps showcase his inventive comedy writing. If you've ever worked in, or even checked out a book from, a library, you'll appreciate his demented, wry outlook.
Wonderful cartoons that every librarian should own.......1998-10-01
These cartoons are hilarious and no library should be without a copy!

Classic for costumers and knitting historians.......2006-03-13
If you love the look of sweaters of the 40's and 50's, this classic by Marion Foale will be an essential part of your knitting library.
There are vests, long cardigans, short bust-hugging "jumpers", kids sets, tennis sweaters. All with that long line and subtle knit-purl engraved patterning typical of the restrained era of knit design. One sweater is beaded. I've seen sweaters like these in vintage knitting books from World War II.
This is a great work for costumers, and for fashion students who are looking for classic lines in design. Also fun for knitters who want to make vintage-looking knits. Beautiful book.
True classics -- Not as chic as her current work.......2003-04-20
If you're anything like me, you see Marion Foale's extraordinary sweaters at stores like Barney's and think, "I could knit that $500 sweater, if only I had a pattern."
Well, this ISN'T the book for you. Perhaps the 1985 copyright date should have tipped me off, but these are true classics, not chic little body-hugging numbers with exquisite finish. Patterns include a couple of traditional cardigans, a sleeveless vest that's like a long tunic, and a number of pullovers. They have some of her terrific details -- for example, one of the pullovers has a garter stitch collar. But I wasn't looking for yarn-over eyelets in a diamond shape.
A nit: the book advertises something like 30 patterns, but many of them are variants -- ie, the same basic idea will be done as a cardi, a vest, and a v-neck pullover.
If Classics are your thing, you may like this book. If you're looking for fashion, pass.
PS -- if you find truly outstanding patterns for body-hugging sweaters that can take the place of jackets (rather than looking tarty) please let me know!
Book Description
Since its launch in 1999, Darby Conley's Get Fuzzy has become one of the most popular comic strips in newspaper syndication, online, and in books.Get Fuzzy books have sold over half a million copies and topped best-seller lists - and now the lovable characters land on this delightful soft-cover journal.
Customer Reviews:
Get Fuzzy lifts the heart.......2006-04-09
I love the journal because when I look at the illustration on the cover it reminds me of how quirky, funny, and irrascible my own "fur family" of one dog and three cats are. The blank pages give me plenty of space to write the adventures they have had. It is "purfect" for the pet owner. I am grateful that the Get Fuzzy comics are there, for they lift my spirits.
Perfect!.......2004-07-02
I am the envy of all my friends. They wish they had such a cool notebook!
A few things . . ........2004-06-19
This is in response to salerwee's review.
1.) Nowhere in the description did it say anything about being a 'comic collection'.
2.) The word "journal" is pretty much interchangeable with the word "diary".
3.) It's very unfair to give the actual book one star just because it wasn't what YOU were expecting. That's like giving a book on golfing one star because you THOUGHT it was about ping pong.
If it's not what you expected, contact Amazon and ask about a return. Do not give the book a low rating because you made a mistake.
Rate the book on what it IS, not on what it's NOT.
Rip Off.......2004-05-29
128 pages of blank lines !! Why don't they tell us up front that this is a NOTEBOOK? Thr usage of the word JOURNAL is not significant enough. I wish I had my $ 9.95 back.
Customer Reviews:
Laugh out Loud.......2007-01-05
This is one of those conversation starter books. A great book to add to the toilet library. I read this in a day (on the couch not in the powder room) and it was great!!! Very funny and kind of gross when you consider the truth behind it!
The Great Greta Garbage, Queen of Quacky.........2006-11-04
This book is a must have for those of you with a cast iron stomach.
There are topics covered here that will, I'm sure, gross out and
repel some folks. I happened to love everyone of them. This book
is a treasure to have.
The name says it all!!.......2003-08-01
i recently just saw this title and was intreged by it.
It is a short book, you can read it in a few hours, but it certainly stands up to its name.
The topics are strange, yet, somehow they hit upon the questions that we all have about those strange and gross things that are out there.
Certainly a conversation starter!!
Yuck.......2002-11-27
In case you haven't figured it out yet: This book is not for the squeamish.
Purely disgusting, rude, crude, and lewd--guaranteed to make you squirm. I didn't think it would be able to disgust me, but I was PLEASANTLY surprised.
This book is a real GOLD mine--a treasury of TRUE facts that are too hideously revolting to be fictional--beautifully organized into many chapters.
Presented humorously--but not for little kids; about 1/2 of the facts have something to do with something sexual.
"Greta Garbage" knew what she was doing........2002-03-27
Often, books marketed as humorous that also propose to be informational are quite lacking: the author fashioning thin scraps of actual data and expanding it with desperate attempts at humor and insight.
Here is a book that is genuinely funny and rife with fascinating information. Sections (and the book itself) may be short but are dense with interesting and well-substantiated facts and observations. There is so much information that the book could be used as a reference or companion to more serious works on scatalogical subjects. The author seemed to be exhaustive in including all manners of body fluids and biological wastes and deposits - exploring the scientific and historical aspects of each.
I'd like to know Greta Garbage's real name, or her other non de plume(s), hoping that this would lead me to other works of equal wit and research.

Sadly disappointed.......2006-08-22
Being a new user I did not find the place to click to see what is inside this book in detail. All I found was a surprise me page and I thought that was fine. Apparently I needed the table of contents before ordering. I would have found this should be titles "A Few Selections from Nunsense". I thought it was all vocal selections.....
When the book arrived I did not find the particular song I really wanted and I can think of several other missing numbers I would like to see.
I am really disgusted. I'd return it immediately but I am trying to decide if some is better than none for this show I was once in, considering the pertinent missing chunks.
wonderful for what's there.......2000-03-31
The selections from the show are fine for what's there, it's just that there were some much more memorable numbers in the show that were not included here. We loved these songs, but were sorely disappointed that there were so few...and none of our true favorites at that. But if you're pleased with the songs listed, I'm sure you'll enjoy this book!

Selection good, but missing songs.......2000-05-24
I love this book. It has great selections, but, there are some songs in the show that appear to be missing from the song book. Don't get me wrong. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book, but I would like to see songs such as the "Padre Polka" and "Prima Ballerina"
Book Description
Each of these 125 problems has won top prize in one of the many chess competitions held throughout the world-and they will help hone players' skills so that even beginners can learn to become winners too. As with all orthodox chess conundrums, the ones collected here stipulate that White makes the first move, and must checkmate Black in a specified number of moves no matter what Black does. This specification is inviolable: players can neither make more moves nor fewer, and each problem has only one correct key. A section offers hints for the really, truly stumped. But beware: while most hints provide instant help, some cryptic ones require a little extra thinking.
Customer Reviews:
very good book.......2007-03-03
I am a chess newbie, and this book has helped me to think ahead. Good endgame variations also.
Challenging & Fun.......2006-01-24
This little book collects 125 (orthodox) chess problems/puzzles/brain-teasers. Each of them was extracted from actual game play in history. Every problem has a chess diagram and comes with the question "white to move and mate in two." I personally found solving those puzzles both challenging and fun. Solutions and hints can be found on the last few pages of the book.
Book Description
The Bull Hunter is a personal road map to making big money in the days ahead–retirement-level wealth that only early investors can enjoy. Influential global market analyst Dan Denning reveals what readers can unearth exceptional short- and long-term profit opportunities. He outlines numerous techniques to mine raging bull markets and extraordinary profits in emerging countries, sectors, industries, and companies that are just beginning to flourish. He also shows readers how to protect themselves from disastrous risks, get in on the stocks of hard-asset companies, profit from the fastest growing economies in the world, and more. The Bull Hunter shows readers how, with simple trades they can make with a phone call to their broker, their investment performance and profits will jump today, tomorrow, and over the next decade.
Download Description
"Right now, somewhere on earth, a bull market in a little-publicized region is providing savvy investors with double -- and triple -- digit returns. Investors who limit themselves to U.S.-based stocks and bonds are missing out on that opportunity. Global investing authority Dan Denning and his worldwide clients know where those bull markets are and, more important, know how to identify regions poised to enter bull market phases.
In The Bull Hunter, Denning reveals how to unearth opportunities destined to provide ground-floor investors with safe, outsized profit opportunities in countries, industries, and sectors that are at the beginning of huge bull markets. Denning, whose financial publications routinely reach more than one million investors around the globe, has spent decades drawing on his unmatched network of contacts to determine the telltale signs of a market that's about to pop, the warning signals of a market that is still years from becoming a top prospect, and what investors can do to find and profit from the former while understanding and avoiding the latter. The Bull Hunter will provide investors with the knowledge and confidence to uncover pending bull markets, and turn today's often threatening economic climate into personal investment success."
Customer Reviews:
A disappointment.......2006-08-20
The book uses almost two hundred pages to state that you should invest using ETF's, that China will grow for many years, that dollar is going down due debt, that oys should use call options when prices rise and put options when they decline. Constant repetition of these same simple ideas throughout the book. I do not know who this book is for, serious investors will learn nothing new and beginning investors certainly should not invest via options.
dollar index versus bond yields.......2006-07-15
On page 46 of the book: A Bull Hunter, Dan denning wrote
"The less investors like the dollar, the more they're going to
demand higher interest payments from the US government"
in simple terms:
dollar index UP, bond price UP and bond yield down
dollar index DOWN, bond price DOWN and bond yield UP
for the first period of May, 2004 of Fig 2-1, US Dollar Index
made higher high than the entire year of 2004. In other word, the
trend of the Dollar Index in the first five months of the 2004 was uptrend. Whereas, in Fig 2-2, page 50, the bond prices were
falling in the period April-June, i.e. higher interests.
further, for the rest of the 2004, TLT price was in uptrend, in other
word the interest must be DOWN. If the statement is true then
the dollar index should be UP. But the Dollar index figure 2-1
showing a down trend.
The choice of these two graphs proves the statement is wrong and the BED index is totally NOT Usefull at all
Good general concepts and strategic themes but lacks punch.......2006-03-04
Overall I gave this book 3 stars because of the strategic thinking ideas - and that as investors of th 21st century, we must look out for bull markets EVERYWHERE in the world.
I would divide the book into 2 parts - ETFs and China.
The first portion being a strategic overview and the use of 'precision' insturments like ETFs. That alone is worth reading especially since this class of investment vehicles are likely to grow immensely in the future.
The next portion describes why the author thinks China will dominate the global landscape this century. The fact that the chapter describing India blended into a description of Chinese dominance made no doubts as to the author's orientation.
Good book - not great though
Worth buying and reading, a solid 3 stars (I'm a tough grader).......2006-03-02
There are a number of books on the market with similar themes, ie. the falling US Dollar, the trade deficit, the rise of China and India, the scarcity of commodities, etc. The case is persuasive and while noone can predict the future with certainty, preparing for these untoward possibilities or even profiting from them is worth reading about. The book is lively, interesting, informative, even if you are familiar with these arguments. I purchased the book from amazon.com and have since given the copy to a good friend. In some ways, we seem to be on the verge of a similar condition that took place in the 1970s, but today one can prepare through exchange traded funds and other vehicles that did not readily exist back then. History tends not to repeat exactly, so my thinking is that there will be some unexpected twists and turns, however I think it would be wise for most investors to read this book, especially if one is not diversified into commodities, raw materials, foreign equities, etc.
ETF's to the moon.......2006-02-24
If you don't know what an ETF is, which would make me wonder what planet your from, this is a great book for you. It has a vast knowledge of several different areas that are key looking ahead into the future.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent read.......2007-05-15
Excellent book, one you have to keep reading till finished. Never cease to be amazed by the SR71 Blackbird. Tragic end to the worlds most magnificent aircraft even today. But I cant help but wonder if all the bullions put into the military wouldnt make the world a better place if spent on peaceful humane achievements.
Not too bad of a fast read.......2007-05-08
This is a fast read with a limited NY Times-level vocabulary. It has several interesting details that allow readers familiar with the procurement of stealth technology by the US government to fill in blanks as to why certain events took place the way they did. It also describes the developing trends that killed the traditional skunk works. I ended up marking none of the pages, which tells me that there aren't any unexpected statements lurking in the book. I'm certainly appreciative of having read it once.
Great Book!.......2007-05-07
While I was working in the plant in Burbank in the late '60's, my Dad was living this book. He was a 44 year member of Lockheed's workforce and spent most of that time behind the big dark curtian over at building 310. I sent him a copy of this book and inspite his age of 89, he was glued to it and can't stop talking about it.
If you want to know what went on, in some of those early years and how really difficult dealing with the government can be, read this book.
What a blast!
The Skunk Works After Kelly - .......2007-04-22
Pondering his retirement, Kelly Johnson, legendary head of Lockheed's Skunk Works selected Ben Rich to take over. Rich lacked Kelly's high profile and bombastic leadership, but not his vision and leadership. For 16 of his 40 years at Lockheed Rich lead the famed group. For the prior 24 years he learned the art and craft of building far beyond the state of the art vehicles in impossibly short time.
Kelly's retirement was at the height of the public acclaim for the magnificent SR-71, the U-2 and countless others achievements. Rich had the vision and courage to lock onto stealth technology in its infancy, recognizing that the survival rate for manned bombers over the then primary threat, the USSR, was going to be low. The Russians had made an incredible investment in their strategic defenses.
The US depended on the manned bomber as the third leg of the strategic triad - submarine launched missiles, land based missiles and strategic bombers. Rich believed the alternative was stealth. Much of the later portion of the book talks of the development of stealth technology, selling it to the Air Force and then building the airplane under the heavy hand of the Air Force.
The early part of the book is a great "other look" at the Skunk Works under Johnson. Ben Rich was there, playing a major role in the design of many of the aircraft. He captures the challenges, the victories and the defeats.
He also brings to life the almost comical cover for the U-2 program as parts and supplies were delivered to a fictional company far from Lockheed and paid for with funds that flowed directly from the CIA to Kelly Johnson. Far from reckless, the U-2 investment was probably the wisest federal purchase since Alaska. Its success was a direct reflection of the lack of direct involvement by the government in the design and the lack of government supervision of the development and construction.
Wrapped up in this book and Johnson's bio are priceless bits of wisdom regarding leadership in the technical and business world. The book is a good read for someone with no interest in airplanes but an interest in corporate or government leadership.
Rich also talks of the sad decline of Kelly Johnson in the later years after his struggles with the health problems and untimely deaths of his wives.
One of the interesting stories is Rich's discussion of the design of the drone designed to be carried by the SR-71. The idea was to fly to the edge of the unfriendly territory , launch the disposable drone and recover the film it was to drop over waiting ships. The drones looked like miniature SR-71s in their stealth like shape and black paint. Unfortunately one of the SR-71s and the pilot were lost in an early attempt to launch the drone off the California coast and the program shifted the mothership role to the B-52.
Co-author Loe Janos understands aviation and his talents are obvious. Somehow they managed to get the book together in the sadly short interval between Rich's 1991 retirement from Lockheed and his death in 1995. The book is an outstanding tribute to a little known (outside of the industry and military) leader who ably filled impossibly large boots. A great read.
Great Read.......2007-01-12
This is the perfect book for any engineer, aviation fan, or history buff. Ben Rich tells it like it was. He recounts an era when honesty, hard work, and patriotic determination drove American industry to the pinnacle of creativity and achievement.
Customer Reviews:
This is a fascinating documentary of a unique secret.......2007-08-25
Ben R. Rich does such a good job of describing the events and people that were involved in the U-2, the stealth fighter, and the Blackbird, that you feel you are on the team. You get to find the problems and help solve them with unique (sometimes-simpler) solutions. And it is over way too soon.
This makes you wonder what they are up to today?

Anyone who has caught Pat Buchanan's television appearances, or heard his campaign rhetoric, will be surprised at his relatively evenhanded and thoughtful tone as he writes--often quite persuasively--in favor of the restoration of the political, military, and economic independence that largely drove U.S. foreign policy in the 19th century. At the heart of A Republic, Not an Empire is a well-written history of U.S. foreign policy beginning with the end of the American Revolution, going through the First and Second World Wars, Vietnam, and the end of the cold war, up to the superpower's involvement in the Persian Gulf and the former Yugoslavia. This section is bookended by, essentially, two very long op-ed pieces that lay out Buchanan's view of U.S. foreign policy: American interests should determine all foreign-policy decisions.
The twin foreign-policy goals of interventionism and free trade that seem to drive the Clinton administration's foreign policy are, Buchanan argues, the same pursuits "that brought the British Empire to ruin." Empires fall, he reminds us, through war and too many foreign commitments. With the end of the cold war, he suggests, U.S. foreign policy has become chaotic, driven by special interests; the sum of U.S. global commitments has become greater than the country's ability to defend them. In the end, A Republic, Not an Empire proposes, the only country the United States can completely rely on and trust is itself. --Linda Killian
Book Description
All but predicting the September 11 attacks, Pat Buchanan warns that America is inviting terrorist attacks and conflict by engaging in an interventionist foreign policy that is costly, dangerous, and does not serve our own interests.
Customer Reviews:
Someone who reads history...........2007-06-26
A sobering reminder of the original ideals behind America's founding, and how far we've strayed. Writing long before our current GWOT travails, Buchanan was the Cassandra of our time....
Well written, eloquent, and insightful.......2007-05-08
The purpose here is to "revisit the history of American foreign policy, its successes, triumphs, and failures". From that we can "expose the myths and identify the true traditions".
Well written, eloquent, and insightful. Although labeled an isolationist, Buchanan would not see us weakened militarily. He delivers a bold history lesson of our presidents and the nations foreign affairs; the domestic policy is all but ignored. He has been proven right on future scenarios, but has been proven wrong by underestimating the U.S.
Buchanan writes: All great empires were crushed because of wars, we are the last remaining superpower and we are headed for destruction. Our military is overextended and we are issuing dangerous guarantees. Through NATO: We are becoming more the defense of the world; other nations rely on us, so they spend less on defense; who will protect us? NATO is becoming more and more a U.S. organization; this is viewed as a take-over. There is a distinction between American expansion (Manifest Destiny) and naked aggression on other soils. Other nations are now joining up against us, who normally would not. If we stayed out of W.W.I, there may have never been a Hitler or a W.W.II. Cause and effect issued in W.W.I, W.W.II, China, Korea, and the Cold War. Not only does Buchanan warn us of foreign wars and occupation, but also the threat to our south--Mexico.
What's the cost of intervention? What did our founding fathers envision for us? What is the right foreign policy for America?
A democracy will eventually fail and a democracy without God will surely fail.
Wish you well
Scott
Right on the Mark.......2006-09-05
A good title, but State of Emergency is just as solid. Read them both.
Read the bad reviews..........2006-07-03
You have only to read the bad reviews to know why you should buy this book immediatley!
another excellant book by Pat.......2006-06-15
Pat uses a lot of history in this book to get his point across, thus if you like history it is quite good, but be warned that if you don't like to read history, you may find yourself skimming through parts of the book where the history is particularly heavy, but he gets his point across. This is not to say this is a history book, but there is a lot of history reading in this book. This book is an excellant example of showing how we have gone too far trying to protect the world.

Customer Reviews:
Cuentos de mi barrio.......2003-05-21
My mom read this book to me when I was a child, the way my mother told stories combined with the writings of Dr. Perales almost made us feel like we were watching a movie. We could almost see and feel the emotions and atmosphere of the book. It's many stories made us laugh at one moment and had us on the edge of our seats the next. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has had stories told to them by Abuelita (Grandma) or Abuelito (Grandpa). Happy reading and enjoy.
