Book Description
This thought-provoking volume presents an original, theoretical reflection on the use of the body in art. It analyses the ways in which the body has always been manipulated: from its relationship with cultural, religious and political institutions to current trends of self-decoration mutation.
The first section focuses on images of the body as it has endured extreme hardship, a kind of iconography of pain. The second section looks at how bodies have been altered as they have been controlled, from prisoners' scars to the effects of electroshock therapy, and even the subtle, psychological effects of the continuous surveillance and data gathering of today. The book concludes with an analysis of some of the major practices of body alteration, bordering on self-mutation (and mutilation), via plastic surgery, transplants and implants to the point that there is a generation today incapable of distinguishing between real forms and a manipulated reality.

Wonderful, thought provoking and intelligent. Covers an incredible amount of territory concerning extreme performance and the philosophy behind it.
Beautifully written and illustrated.

Book Description
It's been a while since there has been a baby in Baby Blues, but here they go again. Darryl and Wanda, already the parents of two, are adding a third little one to the MacPherson household, and they somehow continue to stay good-humored about life amid the chaos of a household on the grow.Never a Dry Moment is the latest collection of the phenomenally popular comic strip, which appears in nearly 800 newspapers, 20 periodicals, and on millions of refrigerators in households worldwide. In this latest collection, Zoe and Hammie watch in amazement as their mommy's pregnancy takes shape-literally. Zoe wonders if her mom's oversized belly truly is all baby or if it's also housing a whole box of pudding pops that seems to be missing. "That's a different bulge," says Wanda. "Check behind me." And Hammie and Zoe still want Wanda to play baseball with them, even if it is just to be the backstop.Never a Dry Moment showcases Jerry Scott and Rick Kirkman's uncanny ability to humorously tap the everyday joys and trials of parenting young children. It's a book the strip's 40 million loyal daily readers are sure to relish as they anxiously await the arrival of the latest addition to the MacPherson home.
Customer Reviews:
I loved it!.......2007-08-08
baby Blues is one of my favorite comics, and I don't get much of a chance to read it, since our newspaper, the Bulletin doesn't carry it. This book helped me to catch up with it, and I enjoyed it!It felt like revisiting an old favorite!
Never A Dry Moment Review.......2006-05-01
I thought this was a great Baby Blues book because Wanda, Yolanda, and Bunnie were pregnant. The MacPhersons add another little one to there family, Wren. I like when the grandparents come over, that was funny. I like when Wanda was in labor. Also, it very funny when Wanda and Yolanda were ready for there babies at the same time! I think this is a great book for parents that have 3 children, more or less, or for parents that have already been, or for parents-to-be. Or for any kids. This was a great Baby Blues, so I proudly give it five stars.
Great Book!.......2005-07-28
I have read all of the Baby Blues books, and this one is just as hilarious as all of the others. Between harried Wanda and clueless Darryl, somehow they manage to maintain a home and keep their rambunctious children dressed, fed, and relatively normal!
More Humor on the Domestic Scene.......2003-11-21
Wanda, Yolanda, and Bunny are all pregnant; Bunny with twins. Darryl "accidentally" discovers his new baby's gender - maybe. After all, he's always had trouble with the ultra sounds. But Wanda doesn't want to know what they're having. Not that it keeps him out of trouble for keeping the secret. Zoe and Hammie are experiencing the pangs of sibling rivalry, and it's just the two of them for now. Meanwhile, Zoe's in first grade and Hammie's in pre-school. And before this book is over, all the babies will be born.
I'd forgotten just how much I enjoy this strip until I picked this book up recently. Authors Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott manage to find humor and irony in everyday situations and conversations, making it easy to identify with. Wanda especially has a great sense of sarcasm, which I always enjoy. Yet the strip also captures loving family moments without being too sappy.
This is one of the truly funny strips still in papers today. I won't let it be this long before I visit the MacPherson's again.
Another great book by Kirkman and Scott.......2003-05-07
I loved the book. It's amazing how they can capture so much of life in so little space.
Book Description
Inspired by a ubiquitous piece of graffiti that U.S. servicemen left behind during World War II, Emmy Award-winning television journalist Charles Osgood has collected an assortment of classic stories and comic tales that buoyed the spirits of Americans who served on land, at sea, and in the air.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but not very funny.......2007-08-12
In the mid-1980's, Studs Terkel came out with a Pulitzer Prize-winning book called The Good War, an oral history of World War II. In a way, Charles Osgood's book, Kilroy Was Here is a sequel to this book, in that it also presents a view from the trenches.
The focus of Kilroy Was Here is the humor of the soldiers. Even in peaceful locations, the military life was often unpleasant in minor but irritating ways. Whether it was ill-fitting clothes, bad food or not-so-bright brass, the reaction of many soldiers was to poke fun at their circumstances (just like Dilbert lightens the days of office workers by joking about the cubicle life). And in the book, we get a collection of anecdotes, cartoons, poems and other writings, most of which were related between soldiers.
As a historic document, Kilroy Was Here is interesting and informative, giving the reader a glimpse into the mind of a serviceman. If there's a problem with the book, however, it's that it's not really very funny. While there is plenty I find amusing that comes from this era (for example, Abbott and Costello or Hope and Crosby), this book gave me only a couple minor chuckles.
I suppose it's a case of you-had-to-be-there (just as a farmer or a cop may not be as entertained by Dilbert as an office worker). And, of course, humor is subjective, so I don't want to be too negative about this book. For the historical value, I am giving it three stars. But for laughs, I'd look elsewhere.
Great for a WWII Vet.......2007-01-05
I gave this book to my cousin who was an Army hero during WWII. He had been in the hospital with a heart problem, and this book brightened his spirits. He told me he enjoyed the book very much and it brought back memories of some of the fun that went along with being a infantryman in 1944/45.
Kilroy.......2005-09-20
This is an excellent collection of World War II humor and pathos, and should be of interest to most of the dwindling group of veterans of that war who are still alive.
Pretty funny stuff!.......2004-12-02
Osgood has sifted through the mountains of GI books and papers, such as "Stars & Sripes" and "See Here, Private Hargrove," to find some of the funniest bits from WWII. There are the famous cartoons by Bill Mauldin, short pieces by celebrities, but most of all, humor written by the men at war.
As Osgood says:
"War is hell, but it can also be hilarious. And in no war was this more true than World War II. While there is nothing remotely funny about the war itself, it's clear that some of the hardship endured in that conflict was made more bearable by generous doses of humor."
A lighter note about World War Two.......2004-04-14
The book "Kilroy Was Here" is a great insight into what went on behind the scenes during World War Two. Charles Osgood has done a spectacular job collecting different stories from so many sources; it's unbelievable! I loved how he focused on the humorous aspect of the war because it really gives you a first-hand glance at the determination of these soldiers and their strong will. They always managed to see the best of everything, even in the most trying times. I really liked the Dictionary of American Military slang at the beginning of the book. There were so many words in there that i had never heard of before, and it helped to keep me on track as i read. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh and who knows any history about World War Two or fought in World War Two. Some of the stories might be hard to understand if you don't have any knowledge of the war. Being able to see the optimism in our war heroes first-hand made me appreciate them even more.

From the award-winning writer-director of
Personal Velocity
comes a startling drama about
the nature of family and the meaning of ideals
In his first role since Gangs of New York, Daniel Day-Lewis plays Jack Slavin, an engineer who over thirty years ago walked away from the mainstream to live out a more deliberate life. But the island commune he began in hopes of a better future has long since imploded and he is now its final resident. Jack’s only other companion is his 16-year-old daughter Rose (Camilla Belle), whom he has deliberately sheltered from the outside world. Now, beset by terminal illness, encroaching developers, and Rose’s emerging womanhood, Jack faces troubling questions about the days ahead. In an attempt to provide his daughter with the kind of family she’s never known, Jack invites Kathleen (Catherine Keener), the woman he’s been secretly seeing on the mainland, and her sons to live with them. But rather than comforted, Rose feels betrayed and lashes out with a willful and deliberate retribution that places her innocence on the battlefield and Kathleen’s safety in danger. His carefully constructed world flung out of control, Jack finds himself trapped between two headstrong women and forced to take action. With The Ballad of Jack and Rose, award-winning filmmaker Rebecca Miller has
created a powerful and poetic third feature about a man who has cut himself off from a society that refuses to live up to his standards, and a young girl’s sudden coming-of-age.

Full Of Mistakes plusss a pokemon advertisement.......2006-06-03
This book spells the simplest of names wrong and labels Agumon as Gabumon. Its as if it was written by someone whos never even seen the show. Plus on one of the pages there is an advertisement for pokemon! ick much.
DO NOT GET THIS BOOK!.......2000-08-25
Even though I am a Digimon fan, there is TOO MANY MISTAKES in this book!If you want a good Digimon guide get the official digimon character guide. There is mistakes in that one was well, but only a little.
Well-inentioned, but full of mistakes........2000-07-22
The writers of this book sound like Digimon fans, espeically when one article author describes his lengthy hunt for the original LCD virtual pets.
However, the proofreading leaves a little to be desired. For each of the Digi-destined, they have pictures of their Digimon in various stages, taken from the cards. However, cards and names do not always match.
i.e.: Gabumon; Agumon card is shown. A Candlemon card is shown instead of Zudomon.
The names of the kids' crests are sometimes incorrect, and WarGreymon is constantly spelled WereGreymon.
This probably won't mean much to the younger fans, however, who get to look at pictures of the toys, cards, and Digimon, as well as a mini episode guide.
Though this is better if you're looking for an alternative to buying more than one Digmon book (i.e., one for the cards, one for the characters, etc.) it's still a decent Digimon book, if you can ignore some of the glaring errors
Pojo's Total Digimon.......2000-06-03
This is an exact duplicate of their Card Collector World magazine Special Digimon issue. This is OLD information. I bought their magazine and then bought this book. Since this book is exactly like their magazine THIS WAS a total waste of my money. Creativity is poor.
Review.......2000-05-14
This is a pretty good book with a lot of information, if you watch digimon, collect any of the card game, you should find this book pretty interesting. It would help if it had more info about the ty show.

COMPLETE MISREPRESENTATION.......2007-04-06
This seller sent the wrong text with the wrong ISBN, even though it is an edition of this text, it's not what was advertised. Also, I paid for expedited shipping and received it non-priority along with making an extra donation who pocketed the difference. BEWARE!!!
If I could import the pics of what I was sent, I would
Excellent survey of operations management.......2007-02-07
This book is comprehensive, up-to-date and well-written. The 'technical notes' appended to some chapters provide a little mathematical underpinning to discussions of topics like queuing theory, SPC, and linear programming, but the emphasis is on practical applications and there are plenty of worked examples.
The target audience deserves to be much greater than aspiring or actual manufacturing managers. By setting OM within a strategic context, by addressing both services and products, and by covering the entire product lifecycle, this book equips anybody concerned with performance improvement in any business with an indispensable toolbox. It's virtually an MBA in a box.
Operations Management for Competitive Advantage.......2007-01-13
I was unhappy with this item because some important product information was omitted from the site, and I was unsure that I was ordering the correct edition of the book I needed.
Operations Management - Chase, et. al........2006-11-14
Great text book. I am very hapy with it.
Operations Mangement for Competitive Advantage.......2006-07-14
Great textbook for OM class. It has DVD and other supplemental applications that are helpful for learning more. I use this book for an online class and reading the materials are easy to understand. The authors are very knowledgeable and their examples are good. I especially like the videos on the DVD.
Book Description
They have names like Barmy Bernie, Daft Donald, and Steamin' Sammy. They like lager (in huge quantities), the Queen, football clubs (especially Manchester United), and themselves. Their dislike encompasses the rest of the known universe, and England's soccer thugs express it in ways that range from mere vandalism to riots that terrorize entire cities. Now Bill Buford, editor of the prestigious journal Granta, enters this alternate society and records both its savageries and its sinister allure with the social imagination of a George Orwell and the raw personal engagement of a Hunter Thompson.

Among The Thugs.......2007-05-17
"Among The Thugs" provides an inside view of the inner workings of an English football hooligan firm, and it's members. Told from the outsider's point of view, it is an unblinking and sometimes chilling account of football gang violence and those who purpotrate it. Bufford takes his readers places where most of them would dare not go. The narrative-like accounts are gripping and often disturbing, but always intersting. At some points book slows down just a bit to explain the philosophy of a gang, and that could get a little boring at times, but it is necessary to understanding of the subject. "Among the Thugs" is a great read and I recommend it to those interested in the subject of football violence, and just to football fans in general.
Very thorough research of a topic that ultimately means little.......2007-05-16
This was a very interesting read. Buford seems to have "embedded" himself in the thugs, nearly becoming one of them himself and certainly being mistaken for one of the thugs (to his detriment). There are harrowing tales of drunken violence, racist chanting and mob scenes in just about every chapter of the book. After a while, the chapters seem to bleed together a little bit. Each new mob scene fairly resembles the last mob scene with only the setting and opponents being variable. Buford even acknowledges that it started becoming monotonous running with these professional soccer hooligans and I think that was part of his point. These thugs have nothing else in their lives that make them truly happy except their congregational violence. It bonds them and makes them closer than they would be without it. I only give it three stars because I can't really make sense of the point of this book other than, "mob violence is bad" which is something I already knew before I picked up the book.
A Sports Investigation .......2007-04-12
This piece of investigative journalism will open your eyes to the British football (or American soccer) scene. The author takes this harrowing tale and takes time to find the humor in it.
Even non-sports fans will be blown away by this tale!.......2007-01-27
My Scottish football-loving friend insisted tht I read this several years ago. I am not into sports of any type, but took his word tht it was good read. WOW! More like a great read! An LA writer decides to investigate the so-called soccer thugs in Britain and mingles among them and follows a group of them around Europe as they follow their teams and wreak havoc on the locals and rival fans. Such an amazing story has to be read to be believed. The writer decided that he's finally got enough material when riot police drag out from under a car (one that's NOT burning) during a street riot in Sicily or someplace, and club the bejabbers out him! And yes,the book's quite funny.
Good read........2006-06-14
Interesting read. I grew up watching the games in England in the 80's and was unaware of quite the extent of violence that went on. This would be an ideal book for someone studying about crowd violence or football thugs. I did however find that the book was difficult to read in parts and did it not seem to flow. I thought some of the detailed analysis of crowds was un-necessary and would have preferred more detail on the thugs and violence.

Book Description
A definitive study of the decision-making process that led to the development and deployment of multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles on intercontinental ballistic missiles. This book takes a multi-dimensional approach to trace the variety of factors that affected the program. The MIRV case provides a broad basis for identifying general features of the U.S. weapons acquisition process, as well as policy lessons for those who wish to improve it. First published in 1977 by Greenwood Press, it is directed toward graduate and undergraduate level students of political science and American foreign policy.
Book Description
Alongside the bestselling 9/11 Commission Report is investigative journalist Peter Lance's expose of the government's decade long cover–up about al Qaeda, and how they're still hiding the truth today.
In the groundbreaking 1000 Years for Revenge, Peter Lance exposed the FBI's twelve–year record of negligence that led to the attacks of 9/11. Now, alongside the bestselling 9/11 Commission Report, Lance's Cover Up, proves that the government has been covering up its own counter–terror failures since the mid–1990s and continues to do so today.
Part I presents new major revelations about Ramzi Yousef, bin Laden's master bomber, and a plan to use his fellow prisoner, the convicted Mafioso Greg Scarpa Jr., to mine Yousef for information. In 1996, while Yousef was awaiting trial, the terrorist told Scarpa in detail how al Qaeda was planning to blow up an airliner in order to secure a mistrial. Yousef was even given access to an outside phone line so that the Feds could monitor his calls. But the plan backfired: Yousef reached his cohorts and TWA 800 was blown out of the sky. Yet the critical Scarpa intel was ultimately disregarded; if Scarpa were presented as a credible witness, it would have undermined a series of cases in which Scarpa had been rejected to protect a crooked FBI agent. The Feds threw away an opportunity to stop the biggest terror strike in the US before 9/11.
Part II reveals the government's continued cover up efforts, penetrating even the 9/11 Commission. Lance–who testified in private before the Commission–offers a minority report on the proceedings, revealing the many conflicts of interest among the commissioners and their personal motives for covering evidence and ignoring major parts of the story. Raising scores of unanswered questions, Cover Up proves one thing beyond a doubt: When it comes to understanding 9/11 we are as far from the truth as ever.
Customer Reviews:
A Chillingly Good Book.......2006-03-17
This is an extremely well-written and documented book. I especially liked the foot-noted references that allow the reader to check the facts for themselves. If the average citizen thinks the FBI and CIA are providing meaningful security to the USA, this book will make one think again. After reading this book, I also read "1000 Years for Revenge". That book finished filling in the blanks. I suggest they both be read to get the whole picture. There is no doubt in my mind that the US will be attacked again, and that government agencies have been put under so many constraints that they will never be able to stop it. Read these two books. Your hair will stand on end.
Excellent Work .......2006-02-06
Since 9/11, I have watched our leaders expend human and material resources in an obviously wasteful and non-productive manner. It is clear that they did not take adequate measures to insure our national security. We have and continue to pay a dear price for their negligence. Appropriate, necessary action can only be taken if we know the truth about what happened and who the players were and are. Official government channels have not been forthcoming with this information. We have been left misinformed and vulnerable. We must know the truth in order to plan intelligently. Peter Lance has provided us with a great resource. He has presented us with chilling new information in a well documented, dispationate, non-partisan manner. We are all in his debt. I urge you to read this book and become active in getting you elected leaders to do the same.
Half a book........2005-12-02
I agree with the reviewer who said that this is half a book. The first half of this book matters; the second half, not so much.
While the bad news is that you are getting half a book for the price of a full book, the good news is that the half a book that you are getting is a bomb - well worth the read. If what Lance reports is true - and Lance's story is documented well enough to believe it is true - the pre-9/11 failings of our government, especially the FBI, are abhorrent. Incompetence is one thing; cover-ups of painful truths are quite another.
Good information reagarding the 9/11 commission.......2005-09-17
I really like Peter Lance. I enjoy his writing style and he has researched his topics well. However, I thought 1000 Years for Revenge was better. He seemed a little stressed and frustrated while writing this book. However, I would still recommend Cover Up. Without this book and 1000 Years for Revenge I would have been clueless as to the flaws of the 9/11 Commission.
Good research, interesting, but doesn't go far enough.......2005-07-26
I read "Cover Up" because I heard the author (PL) on a very popular
nationally-syndicated radio show. He was part of a panel discussing
9-11, of course. I really couldn't decide whether PL thought that 9-11
was a govt. conspiracy, but he was very critical of a very "strident"
conspiracy radio host/film maker. PL claimed that he wrote only what
he could prove, and that the "powers that be" actually want people to
believe in vague, high-level conspiracies rather than getting at the "real"
facts. Having read many books on 9/11 that indeed point to a high-level
govt. conspiracy, I wanted to read "Cover Up" to get another point of
view about 9-11, this despite the scoffs from my friends!
I found "Cover Up" interesting for the most part, also quite
informative, as if a short primer on domestic terrorism (I will assume
that PL got his facts straight), though as I'll discuss below, I am still
not certain what PL really thinks about 9-11.
"Cover Up" depicts shocking, outrageous corruption, perhaps the most
egregious corruption is the FBI/Justice Dept.'s cover up of the relationship
between a fairly high-level agent and a Mafia hitman who killed many people
in a war among "families." While a large element of organized crime is
apparently eliminated, laws are broken at every turn, and when the FBI
man is prosecuted, he answers "I can't remember" 44 times, and is allowed
to retire on full pension, and to make sure the corruption is never revealed,
an honest cop's reputation is ruined, and he is stripped of his pension.
If you read "Cover Up," and I recommend that you do, you will get the
tie-in between the son of the Mafia hitman and Ramzi Yousef, whom PL
claims devised the bomb that killed a young engineer in the so-called
"Bojinka" plane bombing, which the author connects to the TWA 800 disaster,
in a convincing way. PL also connects all of this, along with incredible
negligence on the FBI's part, with terrorism and 9-11, and the details are
quite Interesting.
PL clearly spent a great deal of time interviewing the wives of the
9-11 victims, who pressed for a very long time before the govt. agreed to
have a commission, and he shows many aspects of blatant, deliberate
suppression of evidence by the commission, many members of which were very
compromised, and had much to lose by getting at the real truth.
Yet I found the book lacking in certain aspects of 9-11, esp.
the lack of a deeper analysis of what exactly happened on 9-11. PL asks
exactly the same questions that those who think that the govt. at the very
least knew in advance of the attacks, yet he makes no attempt to answer
them, and cites not one of the "conspiracy" books that do try to answer
the difficult questions.
A very key part of 9-11, as discussed in "Cover Up," is simply reported
and nothing more. Repeatedly we are told that Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, Yousef's
uncle, is the mastermind beind 9-11, yet I remember no evidence or further
details in the book, just a reference to PL's prior book on 9-11. Also KSM's
arrest and interrogation are kept secret, yet again we are not told anything
beyond this, and conspiracy researchers would obviously wonder what the real
story is?!
So what we get is an interesting read but I was left wondering if what
is presented in "Cover Up" is just a shadow of the deeper truth. Still, I
recommend reading the book.
