              Book Description

Late in the 18th century, English children's apparel began to look different from that worn by their elders. The reason, says writer James Laver in his introduction, is that someone finally realized children were different! This engaging book records those changes, with illustrations depicting styles at five- or ten-year intervals, from 1775 to 1920. 32 black-and-white illustrations.

"Dirt for breakfast, dirt for lunch and dirt for dinner! Dirt, dirt, dirt! And look--now there's even a hair in my dirt! The final insult--I can't stand it any longer! I hate being a worm!" It isn't easy being an earthworm, and when one little guy gets mad at a hair in his dinner, Father worm decides to tell him a story. What follows is an ecological fable that combines environmental lessons with the kind of off-the-wall humor that could only come from one man: Gary Larson. Fans of The Far Side have been waiting for Larson's latest work since January 1995 when the final Far Side strip appeared in newspapers around the world, and they won't be disappointed. Father worm tells the story of Harriet, a beautiful but stupid maiden who frolics through the forest enjoying the beauty of nature, but completely failing to understand it. The young earthworm learns that nature is not a cute and cuddly theme park designed for the entertainment of stupid humans, but a complex, fragile, and sometimes violent system where every creature plays a vital role, even the lowly worm.

Larson is never preachy, the text is hilarious, and his illustrations are filled with wonderful sight gags. It may look like a children's book, but there's enough here to keep the most sophisticated adult chuckling for hours. You might learn something, too. --Simon Leake

              Book Description

Once upon a time in a place far away, lived a man named Gary Larson who used to draw cartoons. It was a cartoon that appeared for many years in daily newspapers and was loved by millions. (And was confusing to millions more.) But one day he stopped.

Gary went into hiding. He made a couple short films. He played his guitar. He threw sticks for his dogs. They threw some back.

Yet Gary was restless. He couldn't sleep nights. Something haunted him. (Besides Gramps.) Something that would return him to his roots in biology, drawing and dementia--a tale called There's a Hair in My Dirt! A Worm's Story.

It begins a few inches underground, when a young worm, during a typical family dinner, discovers there's a hair in his plate of dirt. He becomes rather upset, not just about his tainted meal but about his entire miserable, wormy life. This, in turn, spurs his father to tell him a story--a story to inspire the children of invertebrates everywhere.

And so Father Worm describes the saga of a fair young maiden and her adventuresome stroll through her favorite forest, a perambulator's paradise. It is a journey filled with mystery and magic. Or so she thinks.

Which is all we'll say for now.
What exactly does the maiden encounter?
Does Son Worm learn a lesson?
More important, does he eat his plate of fresh dirt?

Well, you'll have to read to find out, but let's just say the answers are right under your feet.

Written and illustrated in a children's storybook style, There's a Hair in My Dirt! A Worm's Story is a twisted take on the difference between our idealized view of Nature and the sometimes cold, hard reality of life for the birds and the bees and the worms (not to mention our own species).

Told with his trademark off-kilter humor, this first original non--Far Side book is the unique work of a comic master.

Now Larson can finally sleep at night. Question is, will you?

4 out of 5 stars More of the same from Larson (thank goodness!).......2007-09-02

This parody of a children's story features a worm family, a young maiden and Gary Larson's twisted sense of humor and love of science. The illustrations are great, filled with little "Far Side" scenes as well as a larger storyline. If you are a fan of "Far Side" you know that Larson is a master of one panel, one-liner jokes. He can also use his twisted sense of humor and love of science in a larger, ongoing plot as well.

Be prepared - this is a quick read. It took me about 15 minutes. Also, it looks like a little kid's book (K-3), but it is not. There are language and thematic issues that you should be aware of before handing it to your first-grader. On the other hand, your middle schooler will love it!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but probably not intended for younger kids.......2007-05-24

I enjoyed reading the book, in particular the small humorous details scattered throughout (ie: the eagle carrying the poodle to the nest, Harriet stepping on the ants she just praised) that gave me flashes back to both Larson's Far Side cartoons and the small Sergio Aragones cartoons sprinled in the margins of old MAD magazines.

I had intended to read it to my kids (aged 7 & under), but I think the ending is a bit too creepy for those ages. (But I do think it's a perfectly fitting ending).

4 out of 5 stars Good but too short - where's the follow up, Gary?.......2007-02-07

It's really about all the misconceptions we have about nature and the environment and (eventually) how we are interconnected with both the problem and the solution. If you take the time to read all the little notes on each page (and you should) you will be tickled. For education, I'd only rate it 2 stars, but for (what has been coined) "edutainment" I give it four stars. Would've given it five but its way too short.

5 out of 5 stars The funniest book ever!.......2006-08-24

I first purchased this book at the museum of natural history in DC. It has been circulated to all of my friends and family and somewhere it "suspiciously" got lost. It is one of the best Gary Larson books I've read and I would recommend it to anyone over 10 years old.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for a sermon!.......2006-08-03

Yes, this book has already made it into one Sunday Sermon, I was there! That is how I found out about this great book and realized it was not just for kids. What a moral lesson. See you real soon!

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection of Humor.......2007-04-22

This collection of African American humor will take you from the beginning to the end, approximately from the 1800s to present day. Learn how slaves coped with their hardships behind the guise of humor that was directed at their masters without them ever catching onto it. See how their humor changed when African Americans were integrated into American society, how fierce and forthright it became, and come all the way to present day to comedians like Chris Rock and Richard Pryor. This book has many parts and selections from various authors. Some of the early selections are difficult to follow, for the language is traditional slave language, but later selections are much easier. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes culture and likes to laugh.

I found this book to be a very in depth look at the life of Fred Astaire. It's a must for any fan. However, after reading his autobiography, this book doesn't have the same amount of humour and charm. For a biography, it's great.

4 out of 5 stars Primer for You Creativity.......2007-08-03

I thought the trading examples and strategies were creative and well explained. It might not be completely appropriate to take these "trading systems" and use them as-is directly in your trading, but they certainly are a good primer to get you thinking of creative ways to find and exploit market inefficiecies and tendencies. The stock market is not completely random, which is why I think these "panic" and other stategies have merit. You've got to think up you're own trading stategies to fit your personality and strengths and I think this book is a good start towards that objective. I've used my own adaptation of the QQQQ crash system and it has worked well. The only thing I wished the book covered more was maybe a short rebuttal chapter to those who would suggest that this is all data mining, which I don't believe it is.

This is a unique book and one that is worth reading.

1 out of 5 stars Simplistic like a Childs Toy = Trade Like a Hedge Fund.......2007-03-03

I should have known better, after buying and reading 50 or so books related to trading, the title should have given me pause for thought before purchase. No hedge fund trades like this (with the exception of trend following but certainly not with the proposed strategy) Give me a break. The worst $40 I've spent in a long time. Don't waste your time or money

4 out of 5 stars Focused Strategies for Gaming Institutions and Retail.......2007-02-26

This is not a book about how to pick the next MSFT, or how to be a master of the Universe. It outlines several strategies by which traders can make money from
                          1. Panic
                          2. Slippage as the result of institutional biases

There is not a lot of detail about risk management, back testing crietria, optimized bet sizes etc. - the author dismisses a lot of The Street's "curve fitting" and over-rationalization through numbers. The basics of how to run your own book - that is for you to figure out. What this book does is demonstrate how one trader - who makes a living from it - thinks and tries to game his opponents.
As for the opinion that Mr. Altucher is not running a hugely successful fund (in AUM terms), that seems to be the case. But then again, he seems more intent on being an asset MANAGER, rather than an asset ACQUIRER, which is what most >$5bn HFs are now.
Give this book a read - it will give you IDEAS, not a roadmap.

5 out of 5 stars Trade Like a Hedge Fund: 20 Successful Uncorrelated Strategies & Techniques to Winning Profits (Wiley Trading).......2007-02-19

Very well written. Clearly understandable systems. Not all would work for my style of trading but quite a few would work just fine. I've already recommended this book to several other traders. I especially like that the systems work without leverage or short selling which means they are suitable for deferred taxation type accounts (IRAs and 401ks).

3 out of 5 stars Good book but missing some of Toby Crabel's meat.......2006-10-12

James Altucher comes closest to describing some good trading strategies.
However, you still need to know the fundamentals of trading taught by Toby Crabel or Linda Raschke. A good book.

                          Book Description

Madeleine Albright is one of the most admired women of our era and the rst in American history to serve as Secretary of State. For eight years, during Bill Clinton's two presidential terms, she was a decision-maker and inside observer of the most dramatic episodes of recent years-from NATO's decision to halt ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, to the pursuit of peace in the Middle East. Now, in an outspoken memoir, she shares her story and provides a ringside view of world affairs during a period of unprecedented turbulence. Albright's story begins with her childhood as a Czechoslovak refugee, whose family fled rst Hitler and then the Communists. In America, Albright grew up to be a passionate advocate of civil and women's rights and followed a zigzag path to a career that ultimately placed her in the upper stratosphere of diplomacy and policy-making in her adopted country. Refreshingly candid, Madam Secretary brings to life the world leaders Albright dealt with intimately in her years of service and the battles she fought to prove her worth in a male-dominated arena. There are colorful portraits of such leading American gures as Bill and Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell, Jesse Helms, and of a host of fascinating foreign ofcials-Vaclav Havel, Yasser Arafat, Ariel Sharon, Benjamin Netanyahu, King Hussein, Vladimir Putin, Slobodan Milosevic, and North Korea's mysterious Kim Jong-Il. Besides these many encounters with the famous and powerful, we get to know Albright the private woman: her life raising three daughters, the painful breakup of her marriage to the scion of one of America's leading newspaper families, and the discovery late in life of her own Jewish ancestry and that her grandparents had died in concentration camps. Madam Secretary is sure to be one of the signature books of the early years of the twenty-rst century-a tapestry both intimate and panoramic, personal and public, a rich memoir destined to become a classic.

                          4 out of 5 stars A very good "read".......2007-09-28

This is a very good bio ;read by the author which gives it some extra interest and dimension. This could have been a dry tome except for the little glimpses of Ms. Albright and her human side and how she used her humaanity to affect world policy. Further proof that " if women ruled the world..." is something to be considered. I believe that while Ms. Albright was at the helm as secretary of state , we were all a little bit safer.

                          5 out of 5 stars Madam Secretary!.......2007-09-16

An admireable lady with lots of guts! She has accomplished some feats that would be nearly impossible for most of us. Learn the real facts about Madam Secretary!

2 out of 5 stars If you want to learn more about her as a person fine but lacking insights into important issues of her time.......2007-09-06

This tape provides a very good personal history of her as a person but, unfortunately, very little with respect to analysis of policies and issues, even those when she was foreign secretary. Is this not why someone buys a book like this to begin with? It's as if the book defeats its purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Really great book!!!.......2007-05-14

I really enjoyed this book, Madeleine Albright has a great sense of humour and this book is for everyone, who is interested in foreign affairs (and memoirs).

4 out of 5 stars Behind the Iron Curtain.......2007-01-04

Madeleine provides behind the scene insight into the fall of the Iron Curtain/Berlin Wall and the introduction of a free market economy in Central and Eastern Europe. Shortly after reading her Memoir I toured nine countries along the Danube and saw the importance of the spark of freedom that her father passed along to her. One person made a difference; especially one with her energy, language skills, and cultural familiarity. This book gives all of the nitty gritty details that made her the woman she is and gave her the strength to be the right person at the right time to usher in major changes in that part of the world. Fascinating!

Steven Johnson turns the tables on the way we consider our computer interfaces. While many discussions focus on how interfaces help us work by adapting to our ways of thinking and our real-world metaphors, Johnson jumps from there to look at how our thinking and world view are altered by our computer interfaces.

He begins with the simple: The mouse improved the spatial nature of our computers by letting us move, by the proxy of our pointers, within the screen. The windows metaphor made cyberspace a 3-D space. And while we tend to think about the graphical nature of interfaces, Johnson also explores the textual side and how it has changed the way we work with the written word.

Interface Culture then goes on to show how, with each advance in technology, the interface shapes our perceptions in new ways. Where mice and windows turned the computing world into cyberspace, agents have created a perception of software as personality. On the larger scale, Johnson sees these tools, originally built on noncyber metaphors, as creating, in their turn, a new set of metaphors for looking at the rest of the world. And while he finds it exciting, he spends considerable time on such shortcomings in our approach to interfacing: what he considers the excessive emphasis on graphics elements at the cost of anything textual. Johnson, who is the editor of the cerebral Feed Web site and whom Newsweek called one of the most influential people in cyberspace, has written an intelligent book about interface design, its relationship to the real world, and how it affects our perception of worlds both cyber and physical.

                                    Book Description

In this hip, erudite manifesto, Steven Johnson bridges the gap that yawns between technology and the arts.

Drawing on his own expertise in the humanities and on the Web, Steven Johnson not only demonstrates how interfaces-those buttons, graphics, and words on the computer screen through which we control information-influence our daily lives, but also tracks their roots back to Victorian novels, early cinema, and even medieval urban planning. The result is a lush cultural and historical tableau in which today's interfaces take their rightful place in the lineage of artistic innovation. With a distinctively accessible style, Interface Culture brings new intellectual depth to the vital discussion of how technology has transformed society, and is sure to provoke wide debate in both literary and technological circles.

Before I continue with a review I would like to explain what "Interface" means in terms of the title of the book: Is the interaction between the user and the computer through soft wares and programs, in order to have a communication technology goal and meaning. This "interface serves as a kind of translator, mediating between the two parties, making one sensible to the other."(P: 14) The relationship between the computer and the human is made by meaning and expression rather than physical force.

Steven Johnson takes us from the beginning of technological discoveries; starting from the comparison of the cave painter and carver to the modern artists and engineers. The discoveries of technologies ever since then; gave way to the polishing and improvements of those technological evolutions all the way to the 21st century.

The transformation of the relationship of the user(s) and the computer has advanced rapidly in the last decade. Communication is faster, accurate and the world has become much smaller, due to the introduction of new advanced technological gadgets which enhances the information globally and that allows humans to be closer but yet physically continents apart.

The book examples Doug Englebart, who was a visionary professional that managed to breakthrough a thought and ideas; with which made possible an astounding discovery for the advancement of interface culture. Everything started while he was waiting to be shipped back to the United States after WW II ended. He was reading a book by Vannevar Bush (an Army high-ranking Scientist) whose essay was entitled "As We May Think." which explains and describes a theoretical information processor call the Memex that allowed users to "thread through" incredible repositories of data. With the idea of Bush's Memex, Engelbart discovered the "mouse" with which we are able to go anywhere in cyberspace by just the click of links and at the same time, we are able to also copy and paste information by right clicking the mouse.

Hypertexts became so useful and popular with the use of new inventions and discoveries. The WWW became a need for the world to be informed in any fields. Countries, cultures and societies are already speaking a one language in which is transmitted the need of communication, in order to gain a positive space in the cyber world. Nations are more united because of the use of the interface culture. However, the information this new culture offers to users to cyberspace can also be used to destroy, and to annihilate forces, because "we live in a society that is increasingly shaped by events in cyberspace,... for all practical purposes, invisible, outside our perceptual grasp."

Johnson clearly explains the drastic change of global societies, due to the replacement of interface culture. We can understand now that we have to report to a computer now for most of our personal and business affairs. My question is: are we going to be completely controlled by computers and cyberspace? Is the world going to depend on it 100%? What about the next decade generation? To me it is hair rising just to think.
My two year old already knows how to manipulate the mouse and knows which buttons to push in the computer. My 9 year old is already speaking a cyberspace language at home and sometimes I do not know what he means.

The book takes us to the details of "Windows" "Links" "Texts" and "Agents" and that they can intermingle somehow to get to a purpose and meaning.

This whole situation is a new century 21st culture the interface between machine and humans. Is the culture and advanced developed countries changed? Do neighbors visit each other face to face? What's going to happen with the future of Universities and students? Are they going to have a physical class setting?

It is hair rising to just think of how much more culture is going to change due to the use of advanced technology. Is it not?

The premise of the book set out in the first chapter was fascinating. Interfaces shape our perceptions, just as Marshall McLuhan proclaimed in "The Medium is the Message."

Unfortunately, this critical eye didn't find its way into the remainder of the book. I consider "Interface Culture" to be a history of computer interfaces rather than an interpreter of the way our perceptions have changed.

I chose this book to read as an out of class reading assignment. I literally had to trudge through it and forced myself to finally finish it a week before I had to make a report on it. There were times when I would wonder if he was ever going to get to the point, and alas, he didn't. This book is about everything BUT what the subject of the book is supposed to be about. I donated it to the library a week after giving my report.
