Customer Reviews:
Lush, colorful artworks revolutionizing modern painting.......2002-04-11
Paul Gauguin was at the heart of the Post-Impressionist movement with his lush, colorful artworks revolutionizing modern painting a the turn of the 19th Century. Largely self-taught in a diversity of media including oil painting, printmaking, and ceramics, Gauguin came to his career as a Parisian artist relatively late in life, and went on to paint subjects drawn from where he would live ranging from Brittany and Martinique, to Tahiti, and the Marquesas islands. In Gauguin, art expert Britt Salvesen drew from research developed by Douglas W. Druick and Peter Kort Zegers, enhanced with 79 superbly presented illustrations of which 52 are in color and 27 are duotone. Gauguin is a very highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library art history reading lists and reference collections in general, as well as being strongly commended to students of the life and work of Paul Gauguin in particular.

Book Description
Combining humor with usable advice, "Mistakes Men Make That Women Hate" identifies and corrects 101 dress and style errors that many, if not all, men make and that most, if not all, women hate. Image expert Ken Karpinski hits a sore spot every time with his on-target observations. Readers will laugh as they see themselves and others in the "mistakes," and will find a way to improve their own clothing, grooming, or behavior in response to the humorous instructive advice.
Customer Reviews:
Lame and disappointing.......2007-02-17
The advice in this book is so basic and obvious that you would have bigger problems than fashion if you actually learned something. The title is pure marketing. There is nothing in the book that targets women's opinions over other men's opinions. I'm sending it back.
tries too hard.......2007-01-02
Kenneth Karpinski's little book is a quick read and has its better moments.
But his humor is sarcastic, his tips are very basic, and the project has little or nothing to do with what *women* hate. They're simply matters of good taste and self-awareness. Men don't learn well by being made fun of. We carry enough weight already.
This book makes a convenient stocking stuffer and is good for a few chuckles in that way. However the Rutledge Press 'Gentlemanners' series is more helpful if you really intend to elevate your game.
Funny and Useful!.......2003-04-16
I saw this book at a local bookstore and had to pick it up as an early Father's Day gift for my dad. Kenneth Karpinski uses humor to pass along clothing and style advice to men. The tone of the book is joking, not negative or condescending, so no one should get offended.
This book is the perfect gift for any man in your life!

TSR--the company that virtually invented role-playing with their ground-breaking Dungeons and Dragons--now brings you the brave new world of Alternity, where players act out the adventures of heroes, citizens and scoundrels against a science-fiction backdrop populated with intriguing personalities and exotic aliens. While not "generic," Alternity is much more flexible than D&D or many other role-playing games on the market. The system promotes character creation (instead of random generation) and complete worldbuilding, and the rules allow the game to be set anytime between next week to the dawn of the fourth millennium.
Alternity emphasizes storytelling over statistics, and players are encouraged to use their role-playing skills and imaginations. But your polyhedron dice will still get a workout; Alternity employs a clever method of success determination that uses both a 20-sided die and second "situation" die that varies depending on the difficulty of the situation.
The Player's Handbook (along with the Alternity Gamemaster Guide) contains all the rules necessary to play, including a "Quick Rules" section that allows players to jump in quickly. Additional sections cover character creation (featuring five alien races and several professions to choose from), mutations, psionics, weapons and equipment. --Matthew Baldwin

Older and wiser........2006-09-09
Alternity is the still the best Role-playing system for 'realistic' role-playing, or 'gritty' campaign settings. This is due to two main reasons... It's skill-based system, and it's adaptability.
Skill based systems mean that your character gets better at skills as he advances, but doesn't become super strong, or better at everything he does. This means that in Alternity, no longer can a player simply walk over and take the gun/sword/+5 earspoon away from the minor villain, because he'll only receive 6 points of damage, and he has 45 total for his character.
What this means for players is that no longer do they have to await the eventual point where they are un-defeatable, except by demi-gods, demons and all that foolishness. They can remain the space-ship captain/FBI agent/whatever-the-campaign-is for the entire time they play. The challenge remains present, the setting remains beleivable, the suspense is retained. The story becomes the driving force of the adventure, not "leveling-up".
The other part of the game that is superior to many other systems is just that adaptability. The system focuses on helping the Game-master to fit the rules to the setting... If you want to play an X-files FBI-agent, a dungeon-crawling adventurer, a Star Trek starship captain, a cop drama, Alternity rules can be adapted to the system with relatively little work. No extra feats or skills to invent, or weapons to design unless you want to. You are not limited to a particular medieval or future setting, as you are with most RPG products.
Alternity was the last release made by TSR before it was acquired by Wizards of the Coast (WOTC). The acquisition of TSR was intended mostly to capitalize on the already established AD&D titles, and WOTC was un-interested in continuing the launch of a new product. Instead, they re-focused their brand onto D&D, resulting in a third release of that product and the design of the d20 system. d20 is not a bad system for heroic and action settings, but this one is better for retaining drama, grit, and suspense.
And as for the comment that this system was not intended for public release... That person was probably in diapers in the early nineties, when TSR advertised it nationwide in their magazines and at conventions. I still have some TSR 'Dragon' Magazines with articles written for Alternity.
The best game system of all time!.......2005-11-08
Alternity is easy to understand, the game system is realistic, but the possibilities are limitless.
NOT AS GOOD AS D20.......2002-03-01
The alternity game was the forerunner to D20 it wasn't even supposed to be mainstream!
The best RPG out there.......2000-08-06
I have never played a better roleplaying game. The dice rolling system is incredibly simple, and creativity is heavily encouraged. My only complaint is that TSR or WotC or whichever decided to stop printing accessories for the game. While they are allowing independent freelance items through, they themselves have greatly impeded upon the progress of a great game.
One Giant Leap for Roleplaying.......2000-07-30
While the cover price of the Alternity Player's Handbook is a bit steep ($29.95), one finds very quickly that it's worth every penny. The last product line to be released with the TSR logo -- though the company had, by this time, been purchased by Wizards of the Coast -- Alternity is a marked evolution from the cluttered, slipshod rules set of Dungeons & Dragons, the granddaddy roleplaying system of them all. The physical quality of the products is high and the material itself is more than solid.
Designed to be the science fiction counterpart to venerable old D&D, Alternity has been given a two-book treatment very similar to that game's, splitting out the rules into a Player's Handbook and a Gamemaster's Guide. All the rules necessary for play are located in this, the Player's Handbook, while all the little fillips, extras and tidbits a GM might need are conveniently gathered in the other volume. The end result of this is a coherent, tightly-packed book filled with good stuff and nothing but the good stuff, from character generation to combat resolution.
As the division of rules is elegant, so are the rules, themselves. Alternity was intended to be a "generic" system, capable of application in a wide variety of subgenres, from Clancy-esque technothrillers to the broad-scope space operatics of Star Wars. A system with a great deal of consistency and flexibility was called for, and Alternity delivers. Using a single mechanic that is incredibly utilitarian -- rarely calling for reference to a table or a chart, and usually involving no more than two dice at any given time -- the game shreds the conventional wisdom that TSR is incapable of putting together a game that can compete in today's marketplace. Learning the basics of Alternity takes no more than a few minutes. Potential players could start a game the same day they buy the book, and that's good design.
Alternity is so flexible, in fact, that any setting from any other science fiction source (game, book, television show, or movie) can be adapted with a minimum of effort. No more need to jam one's head with conflicting rules sets! Take the material and bend to fit. Alternity can take the hands-on with no problem, whatsoever.
For those that don't want to do the legwork themselves, the system "defaults" to TSR's own Star*Drive campaign setting, selections of which are available in the Player's Handbook in the form of alien race archetypes. If nothing else, Alternity simply reeks of possibilities, the kind that get wheels turning in whatever way it can. What more could someone ask of a game of imagination?
When it comes to science fiction roleplaying, there are many options to choose from. Alternity, a fine game from the old masters of the roleplaying world, is the solid choice to make, no matter your inclinations. Easy to learn, easier to use, Alternity deserves your attention.

Study Guide for Come Into My Trading Room: A Complete Guide to Trading.......2005-10-17
Alex is steadfast on discipline and organization, absolutely required for success. His market knowledge is sound and his experience real. I have successfully used his Triple-Screen method for 25 years. His books are great because they help the trader find his own style and if you can't create variations on his work to suit yourself you are not there yet - read them again!
One of the most usefull studyguide I have ever seen..........2005-08-11
Above all the 2nd part of this StudyGuide is usefull and excellent, with many charts with entry/exit points.
I would like here to underline, with regard to the first review, that Dr Elder never talked about Bollinger Bands but ONLY about Envelopes, a totally different concept. I can assure you that when there is a good trend to go long/short at the middle line with the take profit at the upper/lower band is definetely a good technique...
Book Description
With this revelatory and painstakingly researched book, Martha Washington, the invisible woman of American history, at last gets the biography she deserves. In place of the domestic frump of popular imagination, Patricia Brady resurrects the wealthy, attractive, and vivacious young widow who captivated the youthful George Washington. Here are the able landowner, the indomitable patriot (who faithfully joined her husband each winter at Valley Forge), and the shrewd diplomat and emotional mainstay. And even as it brings Martha Washington into sharper and more accurate focus, this sterling life sheds light on her marriage, her society, and the precedents she established for future First Ladies.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and Entertaining.......2007-08-29
This look at the life of Martha Washington was very interesting. She really seems to be a woman lost to history by her legendary husband's very large shadow but this book gives a look at her strength and intelligence and also at the time in which they lived. A must read for any woman with an interest in American History.
The best First Lady of them all.......2007-08-20
Martha was the best partly because she was the first- but she really set the best example of making the best of situations that were at times FAR from ideal.
She loved her husband so much, as was so dedicated to his well-being she sacrificed her own happiness on many occasions to be with her husband- sometimes at the risk to her own health.
This biography shows what Martha's daily life was like, shedding light on her life before she married George Washington, and giving depth into her character and how it determined her decisions regarding how she conducted herself as the very first First Lady. This is SO worth reading-and a great intro into Revolutionary War characters and events that created her motivations while being First Lady and how to conduct herself.
Less than 300 pages, I found it woefully short, but VERY readable! If you are into the Revolution, this is a book to add to your library.
Wonderful book that creates a "real woman" out of a historical icon........2007-02-22
Rather than write a summary of the book, I would like to just cover a few main points. This was a wonderful book! While some may complain of too much detail, I found the descriptions of day -to-day life fascinating. Many times I felt like I was right there with Martha and George. I felt that this book made Martha into a "real" woman, completely relatable, not just some stuffy old historical figure(that barely gets a mention in History class). She and her husband were people of character that deserve the admiration of all Americans. This book deepened my admiration for her.
We All Know Who She Is, But We Know Nothing About Her.......2006-12-15
Martha Washington by Patricia Brady is a very detailed and in informative book about the life of our first first lady. Martha's was named after her grandmother, her great-grandmother and possibly even her great-great-grandmother. She was born to Frances Jones Dandridge and John Dandridge in 1731. Even though her parents were wealthy, Martha learned how to pluck fowl, can vegetables, garden, cook varieties of food, clean a household, dance and read. As well as all of the customary good manners of the day. This young lady grew into a very beautiful young women. Martha married Daniel Curtis, a very rich man, a couple weeks before her 19th birthday on May 15, 1750 and had four children with Daniel, Frances, John and Martha. Mrs. Curtis lost both Daniel and Martha shortly after birth. Martha was very happy with Daniel threw out their marriage, but Daniel was very much her senior, nine years older than her and died July 8, 1757 after only six years of happy marriage. The widow was now in a very prominent position, rich, young, beautiful, running her own plantations without any pesky relatives in her way. Then a new man came into her life: Colonel George Washington. George Washington was one year her senior and the two fell passionately in love with each other. They were married on January 6, 1759. The book goes on to explain how threw out their marriage it was Martha's job to be George's supporter, his emotional stability. Every winter threw the Revolutionary War, Martha would come from her safe, comfortable home in Mount Vernon to live with George in the winter camp. Her coming was a signal for other wives to join their husbands. Then after the war, Martha lived happily with George for only a short time. He was constantly called away to whatever business the new country needed him for. She felt that George and herself had given eight years of their lives to America and should be left comfortably in retirement. She actually didn't want George to become president, but went along anyways when he did. By now, her daughter had died of a terrible seizure and her son was also dead. Though her son, John, had married and had four children before he died. Martha was mortified when she realized that she had outlived all of her children. She and George ended up adopting two of their grand-children. They came home after George's second term on March 15, 1797. George Washington died in two years December 18, 1797. Martha tried to spend the rest of her life as peacefully as possible. She took care of her beloved grand-children until her death on May 22,1802. Where she was surrounded by family and was in her late seventies. This is a very detailed and informative book, it sometimes goes of on detours and talked about George Washington as much as it talked about Martha Washington. I think this book is fine for people who enjoy over informative books that often sidetrack and talks about other things than the main topic.
I think that this book is very detailed and over informative. It constantly had long lists of items that Martha's husbands bought her, things like chairs and spoons. The book also goes into unneeded detail about Martha's family. It talked about Martha's great-aunt and uncle Unity and William Dandridge. Which as far as I can tell, had no impact on Martha's life at all, other than being a distant relative that she probably never met. The book also went into great detail about a infatuation George Washington had before and even after his marriage on a lady named Sally Cary Fairfax. I could see how this could be use in a biography about George Washington, but this book is a biography on Martha Washington.
This book isn't very exciting. Maybe because it is a biography, but this book doesn't elaborate the greater events in Martha's life. The book talks more about the housing and packing that Martha did to go to winter camp, then what she did at the camps. Martha's greater accomplishments should of had more attention than what her husbands bought her and what packing she did. This way the book would focus more on Martha than anything else. All in all, I'll repeat, this book is fine for people who enjoy over informative books that often sidetrack and talks about other things than the main topic.

Portrait of a Lady.......2006-11-04
As an American History major in college, I went into this book thinking it would give me a good beginner's understanding of who Martha was and how she contributed to the events in George Washington's life. Although the book did clearly show what I was looking for, I got a lot more than I thought I would. A biography at heart, this is a detailed and beautiful portrait of a woman I have now come to admire. Although one of the main focuses of the book is (once past the childhood and first husband years) Martha's life with and effects on George, it keeps Martha's emotions and motivations clearly pictured through all the events of her life. Once fully into the chapters on Martha's life with Washington, I saw a portrait of George through Martha's eyes: the husband she loved, cared for, and was deeply worried about from the Revolution years until the end of his life. In the end, the biography was not just of Martha; it was of every life Martha touched. In providing a detailed but not inhibiting narrative, Brady has succeeded in not only giving us a sense of Martha's importance to America, but also her importance to the people she lived with and a picture of a lovely and woman: caring to the point of being overly protective sometimes, brave and stubborn in being with George whenever possible, faithfully doing her duty to both her husband and country, and a compassionate woman who stood for her beliefs and family like a rock despite all the tragedy in her life. Overall, this book is probably the best introduction to the life and world of Martha Washington for anyone simply interested or anyone devoted to understanding history and the women in it.

Book Description
On 27 July 1936, Adolf Hitler sent the Nationalists 26 German fighter aircraft. He also sent 30 Junkers 52s from Berlin and Stuttgart to Morocco. Over the next couple of weeks the aircraft transported over 15,000 troops to Spain. In September 1936, Lieutenant Colonel Walther Warlimont of the German General Staff arrived as the German commander and military adviser to General Francisco Franco. The following month Warlimont suggested that a German Condor Legion should be formed to fight in the Spanish Civil War. Hitler gave permission and the initial force consisted a Bomber Group of three squadrons of Ju52 bombers; a Fighter Group with three squadrons of He51 fighters; a Reconnaissance Group with two squadrons of He99 and He70 reconnaissance bombers; and a Seaplane Squadron of He59 and He60 floatplanes.
The Condor Legion participated in all the major engagements including Brunete, Teruel, Aragon and Ebro. During the war it threw up a number of important names-such as Werner Moelders, credited with fourteen kills, more than any other German pilot and Adolf Galland. It also allowed the Germans to practise the tactics that Blitzkrieg would make famous, such as close-air support. In the Asturias campaign in September 1937, Galland experimented with new bombing tactics. This became known as carpet bombing. German aircraft dropped 16,953,700 kilos of bombs during the war and air units expended 4,327,949 rounds of machine-gun ammunition-the most obvious casualty was the market town of Guernica whose obliteration has been immortalised by Picasso. A total of 19,000 Germans served in the Spanish Civil War. Of these, 298 were lost, with 173 being killed by the enemy. This included 102 aircrew, 27 fighter pilots and 21 anti-aircraft crew. A large number were killed in accidents and others died of illness. The Condor Legion lost 72 aircraft to enemy action. Another 160 were lost in flying accidents. The Condor Legion returned home in 1938 and there was a big parade through Berlin to commemorate its success. For all those interested in military history, the new 'Spearhead' series is an excellent account of each of the individual units. Written by acknowledged experts in the subject, each volume is a detailed account of the development and operational record of some of the most famous military units in history.

Objective Historical Writing.......2006-08-14
This book was well organized, choosing a different format than most military books. The information was a little light, but you could sit and read it like a novel and not have to have much background to make sense of it. It didn't gloss over the good, bad or ugly. The focus was strictly on the Germans though, and didn't address how they the Spaniards felt about them.
Book Description
The George Walker Bush I see: a decent, honest, church-going man with a loving wife (who has a heart of gold and time-honored values) and two beautiful daughters. HeÂ's a man whoÂ's living the same American dream that the average American would like to experience. Two decent parents raised him and showed him love and respect and embedded in him the decency of respect for all people. He is blessed to still have them both by his side. I see our President as a man who has walked a straight road for nearly four years with his eyes looking straight ahead, focused on America, walking at a steady pace trying to gratify and mend both sides of the road with no scandals and criminal investigating along his trail, but he has taken more than his share of licks just from wearing the hat.
