Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Grace.......2005-04-16

Having seen many of Grace Kelly's films I was delighted when Tom Tierney released this book. The illustrations are of the high standard one has grown to expect from this artist.
Grace Kelly's Hollywood career is thoroughly covered with costumes from each of her important films.
I felt, however that the glamor of her life after marrying Prince Rainier of Monaco isn't reflected by the selection of costumes. Even the evening gowns look dowdy.
Another reason I didn't give this book 4 stars is that some of the costumes are not the right color (eg the organdie dress form "High Society", the wedding dress, etc).

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-07-09

This was a good book with wonderful costumes.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

First it appears that the Witchblade can only be used by a woman, now it appears that a man, or at least one man can do the same thing. Sara must try to work out why, and how to get the Witchblade back. Her involvement with Irons and Nottingham deepens, and gets stranger and stranger all the time.

      5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2001-07-15

This graphic novel contains issues 20 to 25 from the popular comic book series witchblade. Events in this book takes place right after the huge family ties crossover event between the Darkness and the Witchblade. The witchlade is now in the hands of one of Sarah's greatest adversaries. Just like the previous issues the artwork is brilliant. There is one thing i don't like though. The artwork is done by more than one illustrator. Each illustrator has a very different and unique style of drawing. The look of the characters and story keeps changing. Besides that everything else is good. For someone who just started to pick up on the witchblade comic book series and want to get their hands on earlier issues this is a good collection to get their hands on.

        Product Description

Right from the get-go, Modus Operandi 9/11 is a spell-binding tale that draws in the reader by the intriguing idea that the story line could actually be true. Best-selling Canadian author Hal Sisson researched 100's of books, DVD's and articles to figure out what may really have happened on 9/11. He comes up with a Dan Brown type thriller that unravels a dastardly plot cooked up by a group dubbed the "Global Union." The cabal deliberately creates a false-flag disaster on 9/11 to shock and strongarm America into a war that won't end in our lifetime... and to bring about a world totalitarian government.

                  Book Description

Much of today's electric guitar centers on playing in a band. We learn the chords, the licks, the solos and sometimes a few of the lyrics. Seldom do we get a chance to play a song by ourselves from beginning to end without band mates or singing. This new book by Berklee faculty and renowned recording artist Jon Finn is a collection of pieces in a variety of musical styles written for unaccompanied solo electric guitar. Techniques covered include pick-and-fingers (reminiscent of Chet Atkins), classical (adapted to electric guitar), jazz, blues, pop, two-handed tapping (like Jennifer Batten or Stanley Jordan) and more. The music is accurately and painstakingly transcribed to match the included recordings. The book also includes pictures and detailed information about playing each piece, both from a technical and artistic point of view. If you want to widen your musical horizons while building up repertoire that you can perform by yourself, this book is for you.

If you need Bible games and activities for ages 0 - 5, look no further. This 166 page book has all the ideas that you need for a fantastic Christian education program. Each game includes a Scripture passage, a teaching point, a supervision tip, materials needed, and game instructions. All games and activities are done with inexpensive materials or things around the house. Many of the activities also include a bonus idea or a bonus tip for how to play the game in a different way. Even if you do not like a certain aspect of the game, you can easily adapt it. There is also a Scripture index and a topical index to provide information on locating games that tie into specific Scriptures and teaching points. There are 51 Old Testament and 50 New Testament games that can go with any Bible story or theme. For your class you can read a Bible story and then play one of the corresponding games from this book. All you need is a coloring/activity sheet and/or craft and you have a whole lesson plan! I find that the younger the student, the harder it is to find creative ideas to do with them, but this book has tons of fun activities for the children to do that are educational too! I must to have for any Christian education program!

                    Book Description

For educators, administrators, and businessfolk: An A-Z of straightforward lessons on becoming--and remaining--a truly great boss.

Leadership is the key to excellence. And leadership can be learned. Thank goodness, because many people who fall into managerial positions haven't the foggiest notion how to lead. They don't feel driven to attain the competencies of a boss--much less a great boss.

Lorraine Monroe is a born leader. She caught the bug early, as secretary of the student council in the fourth grade at P.S. 157 in Central Harlem. She went on to found the Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem, a remarkably successful and innovative public school, and became one of the most respected education reformers in America. Now Monroe translates her extensive experience in New York City public schools into the "Monroe Doctrine" to show other education and business leaders how to create and maintain high-achieving organizations.

The Monroe Doctrine offers readers concrete lessons in the craft of leadership. Its brief, catchy lessons and anecdotes will help potential leaders tap into their natural gifts and harness those gifts to lead seemingly by instinct. Monroe's personal story of conquering the most overwhelming challenges will inspire leaders of all types to try new ideas to enrich their lives and the lives of their organizations. With The Monroe Doctrine by their side, readers will be able to lead any organization--whether a hospital, a house of worship, a sorority, a family, a school, or a business--with renewed passion and results.

                    Book Description

This is a story of the unexpected. In Destined to Witness, Hans Massaquoi has crafted a beautifully rendered memoir -- an astonishing true tale of how he came of age as a black child in Nazi Germany. The son of a prominent African and a German nurse, Hans remained behind with his mother when Hitler came to power, due to concerns about his fragile health, after his father returned to Liberia. Like other German boys, Hans went to school; like other German boys, he swiftly fell under the Fuhrer's spell. So he was crushed to learn that, as a black child, he was ineligible for the Hitler Youth. His path to a secondary education and an eventual profession was blocked. He now lived in fear that, at any moment, he might hear the Gestapo banging on the door -- or Allied bombs falling on his home. Ironic,, moving, and deeply human, Massaquoi's account of this lonely struggle for survival brims with courage and intelligence.

It seems impossible that a boy of noticeably dark skin could have survived the period during which the Third Reich reigned. And yet here we have Mr. Massaquoi's account of his personal experiences, candidly and eloquently told. Most vividly in Mr. Massaquoi's accounts are those of his mother, whose courage, resilience, shrewdness and bits of wise common sense left me wholeheartedly moved. Otherwise throughout the book I oftentimes found myself trying to slow my breath, in an attempt to ease my rage at the cruel injustices.

On a personal note, I once found a series of photographs that I bought from a vendor at an East Berlin flea market. They were part of a family album in which one of the family members was a young woman of half-African descent, living in Berlin during the time of the Third Reich. I was so overwhelmed by the photographs, asking myself how it is possible that a dark-skinned woman could have survived a time when the German government was propagating the extermination of anyone of mixed blood. A year later I would have Mr. Massaquoi's memoir to understand how all the more exceptional his survival.

Other thorough eyewitness accounts I recommend are Curzio Malaparte's "Kaputt" and Eric Johnson's "What We Knew".

5 out of 5 stars Thank You, Hans J. Massaquoi.......2007-03-17

Mr. Massaquoi provides us with a very vivid account of his experiences as a child and later as a youth while growing up under Hitler's Nazi regime. I am very grateful to this gentleman for sharing his story and enlightening the world as to how blacks were affected during this era. While he grew up fairly poor, Mr. Massaquoi was rich with other blessings. He was blessed with a nurturing and caring mother and the ability to be resourceful and demonstrated that he really cared about his friends, black, white, Jewish, etc. Again, thank you sir for sharing these experiences. Your biography should serve as inspiration to everyone, regardless of race or creed.

I found this to be a very interesting record of Hans Massaquoit's growth and development in Nazi Germany. I learned quite a bit from this reading, for example, I was not familiar with the hundreds of adolescent youth sterilized because of their mixed parentage. The well written book is an easy read, but not easy to put down. What I found interesting was the individual racism Hans experienced in Germany was no worse than the wholesale racism many Afro-Americans experience in America.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent read........2007-01-10

I found this book fascinating and illuminating. Very well written, an easy read and often very moving. A book that leaves you feeling good.

A black kid in Nazi Germany? Yeah - but it's also a story of the strength of normal humans in bizarre societies. His mother shines through. His time in Germany is one aspect, the Liberia experience and the craziness of his U.S. Army entry all combine to show a life that is immensely interesting. Throughout you are struck that you are reading about a German who kept his identity and warmth through to the present day.

An outstanding book at many levels.

4 out of 5 stars Destined to Witness: Growing Up Black in Nazi Germany.......2007-01-04

Fascinating book. Watching the child who wanted to be a part of the group (Brownshirts) grow into a man of understanding and accomplishment was intriguing. In all of my years of studying the Holocaust, I never saw mention of Black victims nor Black survivors.

                      Book Description

Like the canaries that alerted miners to a poisonous atmosphere, issues of race point to underlying problems in society that ultimately affect everyone, not just minorities. Addressing these issues is essential. Ignoring racial differences--race blindness--has failed. Focusing on individual achievement has diverted us from tackling pervasive inequalities. Now, in a powerful and challenging book, Lani Guinier and Gerald Torres propose a radical new way to confront race in the twenty-first century.

Given the complex relationship between race and power in America, engaging race means engaging standard winner-take-all hierarchies of power as well. Terming their concept "political race," Guinier and Torres call for the building of grass-roots, cross-racial coalitions to remake those structures of power by fostering public participation in politics and reforming the process of democracy. Their illuminating and moving stories of political race in action include the coalition of Hispanic and black leaders who devised the Texas Ten Percent Plan to establish equitable state college admissions criteria, and the struggle of black workers in North Carolina for fair working conditions that drew on the strength and won the support of the entire local community.

The aim of political race is not merely to remedy racial injustices, but to create truly participatory democracy, where people of all races feel empowered to effect changes that will improve conditions for everyone. In a book that is ultimately not only aspirational but inspirational, Guinier and Torres envision a social justice movement that could transform the nature of democracy in America.

                      4 out of 5 stars Reframing a volatile issue.......2005-04-08

Racism has been an impediment in living up to our ideals as a democracy. It will continue to be a sensitive and volatile issue here in America unless we make an effort to eliminate it. The authors have done a formidable job in reframing the problem in a way to help us trancend it, come together and work toward a solution to what W.E.B. DuBois called the problem of the 20th century. It's a difficult book but well worth the effort!

I know that professors from Harvard and UT are smart, but do they really feel the need to express this in their writing? The entire first chapter of this book is nothing but fluff, using nearly incomprehensible $5 words. The authors do not get their point across in a clear and concise manner and the rest of the book suffers because of this. Do not buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Timely and bold.......2004-04-08

A bold call for bringing people together and transforming society. If you are class conscious and anti-racist read this book, it will be worth the challenge.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK RECALLS ELLISON'S INVISIBLE MAN.......2003-07-05

Because it's the best book about race relations in America since Ellison's masterpiece of fifty years ago. By "race relations" I mean blacks and whites, as Ellison would have meant the words. But The Miner's Canary is about much more, it's about all-minority-cultures and whites in America. And in direct opposition to the color-blind solution the Supreme Court has decided the Constitution requires, the book's authors esteem and celebrate and find strength, including political strength, in our separate cultural identities -- including the separate (non-oppressive) cultural identities of whites.

When I put The Miner's Canary down, I wished I had read the Acknowledgments first, then the chapter "by" Torres. This is a difficult book, it has many authors, and the voice I identify as Ms. Guinier's seems sometimes to address junior high school students and other times to address law professors. So the book has many levels of analysis, and it treats its central topic -- political race -- from many angles. These are not shortcomings, but they add up to a very demanding book.

The book's real-life examples, however, are all wonderful and all one -- compelling and utterly elucidating. And the long illustration of how Greek democracy in action would look if it followed American districting and apportionment rules is simply surpassing wonderful.

Then there's the book's immediacy. The Nobel Prize winning econometrician Robert Fogel has emphasized the roles of technology and religious activism in America's movements for social justice, relegating progressivism to the status of an adjunct to the latter. The Miner's Canary, on the other hand, puts the struggle for social justice squarely within the politics of progressivism. This is not necessarily inconsistent with Fogel (whatever one thinks of the validity of his argument), assuming Fogel's subject is movements in the past before about 1980 when the Big Sleep set in -- which it is -- and assuming The Miner's Canary is describing developments since about 1980, which it is. The book says something new has been happening, and it started being more than unrelated occurrences about twenty five years ago. This new thing Guinier and Torres call political race.

The ambition, originality and insights of this book far outweigh its difficulties due to multiple voices and an "un-ironed out" presentation. I give it five stars.

1 out of 5 stars Why this book fails.......2003-02-07

Guiner and Torres write pedantically with little organization or cohesion. Although the anecdotes were interesting, the authors' arguments reek of indolent emotionalism rather than theory and sound policy.

I realize this is a critical review. I try to be fair to all viewpoints, but this vacuous work warrants these harsh words. Gerald Torres was a visiting professor at Harvard, where his indifferent attitude to his own class and examination live on in infamy. He is not proficient at conveying information.

In short, while Torres and Guiner intended to write a mentally stimulating book, this work is instead mind numbing. Spend your money on another book. For alternate reading on race theory, try "Unequal Treatment: A Study in the Neoclassical Theory of Discrimination" by Lundahl and Wadensjo.

                      Book Description

A collection of 44 prose meditations inspired by the transitory and bird-rich environment of the Klamath marshes on the Oregon/California border.

"In order to accept the enormous responsibility that comes of being in the world, we must first conceive, in spite of all the obstacles, the state of actually being the world." It is for this reason that John R. Campbell came to the Klamath marshes, a wetland in southern Oregon formed by three ancient, shallow lakes, a vast emptiness that is paradoxically home to an amazing diversity of life, of untold thousands of birds both migratory and resident, of all the interconnected life forms that make up one of North America's richest natural environments.

Absence and Light is Campbell's account of his exploration of the marshes and a meditation on the world he found there, on his growing understanding of the physical, emotional, moral, and aesthetic meaning of that world, on his own growth as a man. Through Campbell's eyes, we observe the stirring and astonishing beauty of the marshes and their creatures, and the utter poignancy of their fragility before the heedless ambitions of humankind.

This is nature writing at its most profound and moving, writing that in examining and defining the world of nature helps us to understand the very complicated and contradictory realities of being human. Campbell's luminous descriptions and mystical insights will long linger in the reader's memory.

Some of the insights seemed interesting, but the author seems to have difficulty focusing on what it is, he's actually doing/ writing about.
Book goes back and forth and never seems to develop a solid purpose. Plus it needed to be proofread and seriously edited.

                      1 out of 5 stars Pretty Sad.......2005-12-30

I read this book and it was extremely boring. The author enjoys talking about himself, most of which is uninteresting. He enjoys talking about his swimming in the waters naked. Yuck!

                      1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Dreadful!.......2005-04-29

This "work" done by Campbell is the poorest excuse for ecological literature, I have ever read. His idea of confronting real environmental issues concerning the Klamath Marshes amounts to his own unthoughtful, unpractical, and inane ramblings which he so inaccurately calls "meditations". I hope that this publication was funded by himself, because if it was financed by a publishing company they were greatly robbed.
Instead of producing a coherent work, the reader is forced to endure hearing about his (the author's) past. (This guy has a "Christ" complex.) I'd compare reading this book with the job of a pyschiatrist listening to their patient. Of course, the reader isn't being paid to hear this personal diatribe.
After I finished forcing myself to read this book, I felt that my time had been completely and utterly wasted. There was very little if anything valuable to extract from the "meditations". In actuality this book is a compilation of the thoughts from a no-body who has delusions of grandeur. I say this because he actually tries to credit himself with birthing some type of mystical and magical experience which has been done much better by other authors before him, and as future authors will far exceed. The only portions of this book worth reading were the quotations taken from other writers who actually are WORTH reading! Please don't waste your time on this dull, pseudo-religious "book". As for the author, I think time would be better-spent seeking psychiatric help or admitting himself into a mental institution. Too many skeletons in this guys closet! In the end this is just another European-Extract (with an identity crisis) who ignorantly & arrogantly believes that he can understand the spirituality behind lands that were stolen!
As I've seen in other critical reviews I'd ask amazon to include a scale that has degrees of positive AND negative stars. This would definately deserve a -5 rating. This book is sort of an attempt at an inept poet who's trying to wax theosophical and be poetic. Real poetry of this genre is found in the wonderous work of Whitman. The only practical use for this text? I'd recommend shredding it and using it in envelope padding, or the bottoms of hamster cages.
