Excellent Teaching and Research Book.......1998-05-06
This book has taught me so much about the basics of investing in tax deeds. You still have to do all of the work yourself but this book gives you the background that you need to get started in this interesting area of real estate investing
Excellent resource for raw land transactions.......1996-11-26
Excellent resource for learning the in's and out's of the tax lien
investing game. Very well researched by the author who traveled
around the country, visiting county courthouses! The only limitation
is the it is focused exclusively on land - the author does not
explore the technique with respect to developed property i.e.
houses or income property.
Book Description
Sidney Lumet (b. 1924) is considered one of the most gifted and socially conscious American filmmakers of his generation. His best-known moviesincluding Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, The Verdict, Twelve Angry Men, and Networkhave garnered him an Honorary Academy Award in 2005, multiple Oscar nominations for Best Director, the D. W. Griffith Award for Lifetime Achievement, and numerous other tributes.
This book features over twenty interviews with the director, including two pieces that have never appeared in English and an interview conducted by the editor specifically for this volume. A brilliant technician, Lumet talks a great deal about film production, the differences between working on movies and on television series, and his experiences directing for the stage. One of the few mainstream directors who works outside of Hollywood, Lumet discusses how his home base, New York City, fuels his films. Candid, outspoken and occasionally brash, Lumet talks passionately and clearly about his work with great actors (among them Al Pacino, Faye Dunaway, River Phoenix, and Sean Connery) and acclaimed screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky.
Insisting that moviemaking is collaborative, Lumet often notes his determination to find styles that serve the many different kinds of stories he has told, such as the social drama The Pawnbroker, the crime films Prince of the City and Serpico, the intimate family piece Garbo Talks, the play adaptation Long Day's Journey Into Night, and the television series 100 Centre Street.

Book Description
Examines this hymn of praise in the light of recent scholarship and interprets it through selected musical excerpts from the greatest compositions of the last six centuries.
Customer Reviews:
Everything you've ever wanted to know about the Magnificat.......1999-05-03
Thorough, informative, scholarly, and entertaining even if you don't recognize the music cited. This compact little book is well worth the price. It's filled with (to me) unexpected interpretations, usually going back to the root words and how they've been translated and mistranslated over the centuries. Terrien deepened my understanding and appreciation of this strangely haunting song from Luke.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, but not for everyone.......2005-10-10
I feel compelled to write a review on this book because the other reviews do not provide much information. This is a book of tough chess combination puzzles. Yes, many of the puzzles will challenge a grandmaster. If you are below 1900 ELO in strength you might want to think about getting the other two books in this series. If you are a good chess tactician and love a challenge, then this book has it for you. Not for the faint hearted and not for the casual player. For the average club player, I can heartily recommend the Encyclopaedia of Chess Combinations (not available from Amazon, but I think it is available from USCF) which will provide a very good tactical training program.
Learn the deep mysteries of chess........1999-02-19
There is no better book for the expert chess player. Learn the secrets of the world's greatest chess players by figuring them out for yourself. This book is a test. The hardest one you will ever take. See how you measure up against the best of the best. Let this unforgiving venue expose your many weaknesses, only then will you become strong.
If you are truely serious about chess, this book is a bargain at any price.

Customer Reviews:
useless.......2007-04-13
bought this book beacause of macd - ok but nothing more. the rest of the book is more or less useless. For me it sees that he wrote this book because of what he had to say about macd. absoluttly wate of money and time. do you want the best go to a. elder. he si the best.
A good TA "and" trading book for relatively advanced players.......2007-01-11
I am a mechanical trader using primarily trendline, MACD and Stochastics. That explains why I immediately picked this book up when the tagline "Inventor of MACD" on the front cover entered my eyes. Out of expectation, this book had only one (out of ten) chapter on MACD (but I did learn that the author used 6-19 and 19-39 other than 12-26 as parameters). The rest were on volume, moving average, oscillator type TA tools, plus strategies on fund selection and switching, and trading on seasonal+cyclical factors (Chapter 5 which I like the most, that he explained with solid data why the Nov-Jan period, the pre-election year etc are the best time to enter the market). As a trading book, this is relatively compleat and helpful, though I admit I am biased for my respect to the author. In short, recommended, particularly for those with certain trading experience + TA knowledge and want to acquire more for an edge.
p.s. As a VAS to you and a support to my review above, below pleaes find a summary of "Lessons I (the author) have learned during 40 years as a trader" in the last chapter.
- The news media tend to be the last to know and almost always tend to follow stock market trends rather than to lead them.
- There might be many benefits in attending lectures, meetings....but it is probably best to operate alone.
- It is best to keep your results and performance private.
- Human nature operate against good trading practices. Traders often tend to close out their strongest positions too early and maintain their weakest positions for too long.
- The name of the game is to make a good (but not unreasonable) return for your time and capital, not to feel smart.
- Dont confuse rising stock prices with being a financial genius.
- In-and-out trading will not be as profitable as well considered intermediate term trading.
- It is better to miss a profit than to take a loss.
- It is probably best not to operate at the market opening.
- Do not enter into an invested position without an exit plan
- It is much better to trade with no more capital than you can comfortably risk.
- Three consecutive successful trades makes us feel like a genius. That's when they get us.....
- Make note of some losing transactions....The stock market, at best, is a game of probabilities.
- Be free to simply stand aside until matters clarify.
Topics in Technical Analysis.......2006-11-13
In my opinion, the title of this book should be "Topics in Technical Analysis". This book covers some aspects of technical anaysis and each part is very wellwritten. Especially MACD is well covered than any other book in TA. A good source for intermediate and advanced readers.
Venerable But Misleading Advice.......2005-10-02
IMO this book's advice can prove costly.
But why not judge for yourself? For many years the author edited an investment news letter entitled Systems and Forecasts which his son now manages. Check out Hulbert's ranking of investment news letters to see how S&F has done compared to its competitors. Significantly, neither the book nor its jacket mentions the newsletter.
The accolades of othr writers on technical analysis reminds me of Arthur Koestler's old book called The Call-Girls (highly recommended and available through Amazon)about an inbred group of Academics who spend much of their time touting each others work. In this case I believe the homage is a gesture of respect to a technical anayst no longer young.
One among manny objections I have to this book it that it barely mentions that moving average indicators (like the author's MACD)
are meant for trending markets but usually don't work in trading markets- an oversight as easy to make as it can be expensive.
I have traded for over 20 years but strictly as a hobby.
A Cornucopia for the Serious Trader.......2005-08-24
If longevity is a key to greatness, Gerald Appel has achieved it. When I got into the business in the mid-seventies, he was an admired technical analyst. His publication, Systems and Forecast, was required reading. The inventor of MACD, he has lived to see his technique used by virtually every serious investor and trader; it is included in most trading programs.
With Technical Analysis, this accomplished technician and money manager, offers a complete course in forecasting future market behaving using cyclical, trend, momentum and volume signals.
His techniques are suitable for investors of all suits - be they short-, intermediate- or long-term. Even mutual fund investors will benefit.
It is rare that a successful money manager of Appel's stature shares his secrets with the public. If you are a serious investor or trader, you can only benefit from time spent with this master and his ideas.
Book Description
Jenifer Estess is a beautiful, successful, thirtysomething New Yorker with dreams of starting her own family when she is diagnosed with ALS, a fatal disease. Doctors tell her to max out her credit cards and prepare to die. That is precisely when Jenifer starts to live -- dreaming deeper, working harder, and loving endlessly. A girlhood pact with her sisters Valerie and Meredith -- nothing will ever break us apart -- inspires Jenifer as she faces down her most vicious enemy.
Beautifully written and wholly inspiring, Jenifer's memoir forces us to reconsider society's notion of "having it all," and illustrates, more than anything, the power of memory, work, and, most of all, love.
Customer Reviews:
A very moving memoir.......2007-08-30
This was another memoir I wasn't sure I would keep reading. I am glad that I gave this book a chance. It is a very moving, sad book. I think about it fairly often.
LOVED IT!!.......2007-08-18
I've never been moved to write a review before, but this is such a moving memoir. Jennifer's story inspired me in every way. Although I'm completely healthy, I could relate to the book. Life is hard but we all should feel lucky for what we have, for what Jennifer didn't get to have. I want to kiss my kids more than I ever did before, after reading this book. And Jennifer was a great storyteller and writer. I'd recommend this to anyone in need of a good read in front of the fire. That's the kind of book this is. Curl up and enjoy.
Meh. Very sad and somewhat moving, but not entirely memorable........2007-08-05
First off, I have to admire how Jenifer used her illness and influence to educate others and raise awareness and money for ALS.
That said, I have to agree with the others who said that this book seemed to be heavy on the early-childhood memories and name-dropping than it was about Jenifer's self-awareness and feelings throughout her illness. I would have liked to know how more about how she created and structured Project ALS--it seemed like she just picked up the phone and called a few of her celebrity friends to organize a fundraiser. It might have been more powerful and meaningful if she had gone into more detail about her feelings and thoughts as the disease progressed.
I'm glad I read this book. I certainly do appreciate the courage that Jenifer and her sisters had around ALS, but I agree with the other reviewers who could have done without the list of her many celebrity friends and childhood stories.
lifetime movie.......2007-07-14
I actually bought the book after seeing the lifetime movie. I have to say I would recommend the movie over the book. Maybe its because I saw the movie first, usually its the other way around. The book is kind of boring compared to the movie, I guess I just expected more from the book.
Bad -- Very Very Bad.......2007-05-13
Alright, I was reading 'Tales from the Bed' by Jenifer Estess as told to Valerie Estess (NONFICTION) This lady (Jenifer) has ALS and this is her trials and dribulations of her life esp. when she is hit with the ALS. BEFORE I START I realize that ALS is a very serious terminal condition okay ... I got that ... anyway, it may be because it was written by her sister and not her (the author passed away) but this reads like a 5th grader wrote it. I kept thinking that it had to get better, NOPE. At the beginning she brags about being the most popular girl growing up and that she came from money etc ... okay, I'm having a hard time already ... then she (as an adult) finds out she has ALS. Her sisters have to take care of her in every shape and form, which is great to have family like that. Then I got to the part where her dad had divorced their mother (years ago) and they realized they weren't going to have the funds to pay for college cause daddy had a new family ... are you still with me, I know it's hard ... so they go egg his house (remember, the author has full blown ALS) and the author is excited because she RAN up (she can't move on her own?) and she got 3 bulleyes in a row on the door???? Alright, now I'm confused ... I proceeded to read knowing it couldn't possibly get dumber, which means that I'm dumb for thinking that ... they then decide that they want to get the word out about ALS to try and find a cure. They want to light a fire under the Dr.'s so they'll start working harder (yes, I know, they're delusional) to find a cure for ALS and they decide to put on a little play -- A PLAY PEOPLE!!! That is where I stopped ... I couldn't take anymore ... tihis book is absolutely ridiculous -- ahhhhh I feel so much better, thanks for letting me rant. Next time I'll take note of who they are featuring as comments for the book -- this one was Sarah Jessica Parker, that should have been my first clue!

Book Description
In this nostalgic visit to L.A. International Airport, you'll see the evolution of the airliner from propliner to turboprop, jet, and the early wide-body jumbo.
Customer Reviews:
A great photo essay.......2002-09-27
Congratulations to Robert Archer on producing this magnificent book, a must for all propliner fans.
The photographs are simply superb and vividly evoke the lost era of the propliners, as well as going on through the sixties, showing the steady advance of jets and eventual disappearance of the propliners. I even liked the photos of the jets!
so-way-fabby!.......2000-04-11
what a glorious showcasing of the world's PREMIER plane-spotting airport! Although some fabulous spotting can be had today, AIRLINERS AT LAX recalls the halcyon, diverse days when so many unique paint schemes could be seen as a matter of daily standard at LAX! Informative, descriptive, and simply delightful--a trip back into time!
Good Old Days at LAX.......1999-01-11
As a flight attendant, this book brought back great memories of my first years flying in and out of LAX. A book for everyone to have
Fantastic photos! A great taste of history........1998-07-28
I am a child of the seventies. I also am a great fan of commercial aviation, and have travelled a lot. Therefore, appreciating the beauty of airplanes has become a great passion of mine. However, I know little about the great propeller aircraft before the age of jets. This book allowed me to learn about some of the wonderful planes of the fifties and sixties that were eventually replaced by jets. And all this was done in the language of my soul, pictures. I relate much better to pictures than words when trying to capture the beauty of any domain where one's eyes dominate (such as is the case with airlplanes). I urge anyone who is a passionate airplane fan like myself, and who would like to learn a little about pre-jet aviation to buy this book.
Book Description
A scathing critique of Africa's governments by the Africa editor at The Economist.
Why is Africa so poor? Why are so many of its nations at war? Why is AIDS devastating Africa like nowhere else? And why do African entrepreneurs find it so hard to borrow money? In this provocative and thoughtful book, Guest argues that the continent remains poor primarily because it is badly governed. Since the colonial powers pulled out, the autocrats who largely replaced them have struggled to keep order, let alone create an atmosphere conducive to economic development. The results have been devastating: Two-fifths of African nations are at war, AIDS has lowered life expectancy to as young as 40 years, lack of collateral makes investment almost impossible, and foreign aid has had very little effect on the daily lives of the poor. The Shackled Continent provides a persuasive look into the persistent problems of modern Africa and offers some possible solutions. What Africa needs is peace, the rule of law, and greater freedom for individuals to pursue prosperity without hindrance from their rulers. The prescription may sound simple, but it is tough to administer, as Guest's investigations from Angola to Zimbabwe reveal.
Customer Reviews:
Today,Africa is still in chains.......2007-08-17
Definityely 5 stars for this excellently written book. The narrative is smooth flowing, easy to read and follow, with admirable clarity and honesty of what is being told, interpreted, surmised, unravaled or analyzed.
I read it from cover to cover. It's like embarking on a journey through Africa and discovering, sometimes surprisingly, facts about this complex and beautiful continent which you were either unaware of, or just didn't care to know about before. As the author points out, tribalism, abuse of power and corruption of post colonial leaders are significant root causes of SubSaharan Africa's seemingly perpetual poverty. The deplorable conditions encourage educated professionals to emigrate to other (non-African)countries, thus depriving Africa of badly needed talent. But the author also stresses that elimination or at least significant mitigation of the widespread corruption and ineptness of the governing power will eventually lead the continent to prosperity. A new generation of skillful and educated Africans will inevitably and hopefully emerge to institute a massive cleanup of what the author calls as "thugocracy". The book is a coverage of Africa from a journalistic and economist point of view, the author being both a good journalist and economist. And this coverage skillfully told in a very interesting understandable style.
As I have mentioned previuosly in another African review ,we have become too overly exposed to the conflicts of the Middle East to such a degree that we tend to ignore Africa (subSaharan) and its people. It is hoped that when you take this journey with Robert Guest, you will become more broadminded and feel more compassion and respect for this remarkable continent wracked by post colonial civil wars and their after effects, and receiving insufficient attention by the international community.
Yet,despite all these devastation and painfully slow rehabilitation, the comments and anecdotes expressed by the people who can still afford to retain their sense of humor, somehow suggest hope. The progress which is reflected by South Africa may serve as a beacon of hope for the rest of the continent. This hope is somehow depicted in the last paragraph of the last chapter of the book: The author was talking to a 19 yr old youth who, after the civil wars, began raising and processing chickens for a living. The author commented that the Japanese labored for a century before they caught up with the West. The African boy shrugged his shoulders."We can do it,too," he replied,"And besides, raising chickens is better than fighting."
I highly recommend this book to everyone who knows plenty, knows little or knows nothing about Africa.
Shackled Continent - Robert Guest.......2007-08-12
An awesome read! Thrilling to read text that flows with examples, but still the writer makes very justified conclusions.
On the latter part of the book, one of the chapters began dragging and getting disoriented from Africa slightly towards Asia. Anyhow, Guest has a good command of history and economics, so fine and even unique are some of the comparisons. The text is supported by notes.
To conclude: I enjoyed reading facts, sad ones, as in a suspense thriller.
The Shackle Continent.......2007-01-27
Its amazing it's really good when you read you dont need to stop also when you finish reading you feel like reading it again, it is all true story , when i give to my friend to read they always ask me where did you buy this we also want to buy the same. I am not sure if the author was against Mugabe on this book I dont know much about him but i saw his speaches it looks that he is intelligent and a good politition too. I visited Zimbabwe and what the author described it is 100 % true the people and the country, even the farms visited by me were dead.
NO ONE SHOULD MISS READING THIS BOOK It opens out our minds and shows us the way we human being act/change when we become on the top and also how we end up.
Thanks to the author of this book Excellent and hope to get more from him especially of the Middle east if possible
Shaqsy
baas Guest tells Africans how it's gotta be.......2005-02-28
This book basically boils down to arguing that only global capitalism can solve Africa's problems.
Guest trawls through a litany of Africa's various humiliations, quickly excluding colonialism and developed countries' trading practises as major contributing factors and presents any solution attempt other than strict laisser faire economics as the sinister workings of some cruel and corrupt natives.
There's a patronising tone to the book and sometimes one feels that Guest approaches Africans with a missionary's zeal, waving a copy of the Economist in a way reminiscent of his forefathers (except they waved copies of the bible).
His devotion to capitalism seems almost fanatical. For example, when considering the problem of rising unemployment in South Africa he argues that it is simply "largely a consequence of the government's efforts to protect workers" (p 223).
Outstanding journalism on the African continent.......2005-01-03
The Shackled Continent is a tour de force. Robert Guest is a writer for The Economist and the style and quality of writing is outstanding. Guest is a brave soul for bringing us the true story of Africa: a continent full of potential that has been wasted by the deeds of socialist leaders who, in casting off their colonial chains, have destroyed their people's lives and, worse, much of their hope for a better future. The root cause of these problems? Tribalism.
After reading this book, I am convinced more than ever that Africans are entrepreneurial and hard-working with a good head for business. They are let down by creaky government infrastructure, corruption, and a lack of foreign direct investment from wealthier nations. But the rest of the world pays little attention to what goes on in Africa (sub-Saharan at least) and until more scrutiny is directed at governments in countries such as Zimbabwe, nothing much is going to change and the cycle will continue as is.
Guest's book paints a frustrating picture and one does not finish reading it wholly satisfied, which I think was his point, mirroring the current situation in Africa.
