The Corset: A Cultural History
ASIN: 1579121055 |
Book Description
The retrospective of lingerie through the ages offers the admirer and wearer fashion tips by example for making these bare essentials look great so you can feel great. Lingerie is part icon, part turn-on, and an international symbol of feminine mystique.
Author and former fashion stylist Catherine Bardey takes a tasteful and entertaining look at the history, iconography and appeal of women's underwear, from bloomers and emancipation and the evolution of underwear. From the confining corsets of the Edwardian era to the conical shaped bras of the 1950s to the sheer, supportive shapes of today's lingerie, styles have changed dramatically through the decades, influenced by cultural changes as well as sports and the entertainment industry.
Lingerie is lavishly illustrated with over 100 photographs, illustrations, advertisements and ephemera.

star for illustrations only.......2005-03-13
This book's text is dreadful. Incredibly wrong information, ridiculously mislabeled pictures including these "gems":
1)mid 1880's Fashion illustrations captioned as "Fashions from the 1850's as portrayed in Godey's Lady Book" (Having access to Godey's I can also vouch they are most certainly not from Godey's as well. They appear instead to be French- the high quality color printing gives that away.)
2)A Fashion illustration from the later 1820's is captioned "In the 14th century belts and sashes served as waist restraints, prefiguring the more severe cinching that would follow."
3)A circa 1750 fashion illustration is captioned "The 15th century farthingale was so restrictive it disappeared from Europe by the early 1600's"
Great pictures but..........2004-12-24
Unfortunatly the elaborate descriptions and lack of reference to photo's make it difficult to "see" what the author talks about. The pictures in this are all very nice and most importantly I did learn. Thanks
A nice light read.......2003-03-15
This history is a pleasant little coffee table book, very light to read, and lots of photographs which people might refer to as "tasteful." I don't know how much I really learned about lingerie from reading this book, but I definitely enjoyed it.

Pretty Good.......2006-03-10
The comics in this calendar aren't as funny as the 2004 one that I also had... however, it's still entertaining, and if you are a foxtrot fan, and don't mind reprints (as mentioned above) then go for it.
Foxtrot Calendar 2006.......2006-02-25
This calendar is my favorite of the page-a-days, and like similar calendars, revisits the comic as it appeared about three years ago in daily publication. This is enough time that even the best-remembered strips appear fresh again. For those unfamiliar with Foxtrot, it follows the daily activities of the Fox family, and is particularly appealing to those who appreciate the occasional joke about math, physics, or computer science. But many of the best ones deal with ordinary family situations, as when Paige discovers that the National Mall is, well, not a mall.
Sadly, the flying paper airplane that made flipping the pages so much fun last year is missing for 2006.
Well, maybe next year.
Pretty standard Foxtrot.......2006-02-24
The comics for this calendar have all appeared over the last few years in the daily syndicated comic strips. As long as you don't mind that, this is a great calendar for any Foxtrot fan!
Funny as always.......2006-02-23
Yes, this is a repeat of previously printed Foxtrot strips, but it is hilarious and all from 2005, so definately worth it.

Book Description
This is the remarkable autobiography of composer and pianist Henry Mancini.
Customer Reviews:
A fabulous read!.......2002-03-25
As I have been an avid fan of Mr. Mancini's work for many years, I was eagerly awaiting the publication of this new extended edition of his autobiography. I wasn't disappointed!!
While co-written with jazz author Gene Lees, Henry's voice comes shining through as readers gain insight into the life of this remarkable man: his humble roots, his quirky sense of humour, his respect for those who worked for him, and the music that made him famous.
From a musical standpoint, this book is incredible! I strongly recommend having a lot of his music on hand as you read. Playing his music softly in the background while I read this book allowed me to listen with new ears. As he explains his rationale for the way his songs are written, the instruments he used, and how they reflect the movies they were used for, you'll want to have the music available to you so you can really hear what he is talking about.
Henry Mancini was truly one of a kind, and after reading this book, I can certainly agree with Gene Lees when he writes of Henry, "The world is a better place because he lived in it, but a smaller place because he left it."
This is one of the most insightful, informative and readable autobiographies I've ever read. Don't hesitate for a second to buy this book!

Written by Grandmaster, former British Champion, and Nimzo-Indian expert Chris Ward, Offbeat Nimzo-Indian is an in-depth chess guide to the Nimzo-Indian defense, one of Black's most intractable means of fortifying itself against White. Offbeat Nimzo-Indian specifically examines three underrated ways of retaliating against the Nimzo: the Samisch, the Leningrad and the 4 f3 variation. Each technique can be used to heavily pressure one's opponent from the very beginning of the game. A wealth of examples and sample games expertly illustrate this focused supplementary guide for intermediate to advanced chess players.

Financial experts agree: Asset allocation is the key strategies for maintaining a consistent yet superior rate of investment return. Now, Roger Gibson's Asset Allocation - the bestselling reference book on this popular subject for a decade has been updated to keep pace with the latest developments and findings. This Third Edition provides step-by-step strategies for implementing asset allocation in a high return/low risk portfolio, educating financial planning clients on the solid logic behind asset allocation, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Asset Allocation: Balancing Financial Risk.......2007-07-11
Good overview. Perhaps a little technical. Graph oriented. Author does a good job of explaining his view point and backing it up with historical data.
asset allocation by gibson.......2007-05-24
The book was in excellent condition and was received in about five days.
Most solid advice on asset allocation ever.......2007-01-28
I had to read this book when I was taking a course to get a CIMA designation. I thought the book would be dullsville. But to the contrary, his strategies when tested are nothing short of amazing. To move away from the simple stock bond mix that every other book pimps out, is brave, but more importantly, he is right. Since reading the book I have obtained as many of his writings as possible. If you take the advice in this book and implement it, it will create a low stress, high return strategy. Good near term and long term advice. I will look to by more of this book to give to others. BEST BOOK ON ASSET ALLOCATION I HAVE EVER READ.
Gibson's Asset Allocation.......2006-08-23
Among the many books on this subject, this is one of the best. Unlike most of the other authors, Gibson does not limit himself to list the different asset classes and then provide recommended allocations. He goes one step further and describes in very practical terms the different issues that one faces when developing a portfolio and how to resolve them. In my view, Gibson ranks next to Bernstein and Malkiel. A good buy!
Asset allocation practically eliminates all risk while increasing returns........2005-07-01
This book informs the current political struggle to reform the Social Security program. In the case of a foreign invasion or some other calamity, it's true that one's private investments would be insecure, but so would one's "investments" in government bonds, so such cases are irrelevant.
In all relevant circumstances, private investments, if one adheres to even a primitive asset allocation strategy, are 100-percent safe. Mr. Gibson explains why.
He also cites studies concluding that the most significant variable in differences among institutional investor performance is emphasis on stock-picking and market-timing versus asset allocation. Those who emphasize asset allocation perform better than those who emphasize stock-picking and market-timing. A good companion to this book is "A Random Walk Down Wall Street", by Burton G. Malkiel.
Of course, Mr. Gibson introduces the reader to the theory and methods of asset allocation.

Customer Reviews:
A brillant mind but still bound by his times........2007-09-09
Mr. Jefferson was a brilliant man. I enjoy reading his works and appreciate this opportunity to gain insight into his logic and thought process as it evolved throughout his lifetime. His intellectualism and that eternal curiosity about his world place him head and shoulders above those men of his time. He bought Louisiana upon the suggestion of Thomas Paine and our nation spread westward as a result. He no doubt made major contributions towards the creation and founding of this nation. Thousands of accolades for his brilliance and achievements are in order. I'm not putting him on a pedestal, there was a dark side. He did own slaves. He was however in many ways morally and intellectually bound by the time he lived in. His thoughts regarding the mentality of slaves scream racism. His solution was to abolish slavery and export them back to Africa. He believed most would never fit in to American culture based on their resentments against enslavement and the racism they endured from white society at the time. His letters to American Indians in which he addressed them as "My Children" and assured them of his eternal blessings belied the fact that their lands were being taken away from them and they were being forced to be assimilated or slaughtered. He did not foresee the industrialization of America and wanted to leave manufacturing to the Europeans to preserve the American way of life. In short, Mr. Jefferson was all too human, who no doubt would be appalled at the antics of modern day Republicans and Democrats.
QUOTATIONS OF THOMAS JEFFERSON.......2007-01-18
At approximately $10.00 I expected a little more material than this 32 page, index card size book, provided.
The other customer reviews seem to be about another book.......2006-12-18
I have this book (I checked the IBSN#). It's 32 pages of quotes, and that's it. No papers, no index, etc. I think the other customer reviews are innacurate in that they are probably about an entirely different book.
So about *THIS* book, I love it. It's got the well-known quotes like "Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." and lesser-known quotes like "When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on."
It's not a scholarly work. It doesn't have citations to explain where the quotes came from, but it was exactly what I was looking for.
If you are a fan of Liberty, this book is a must buy.
The writings of a one of the Great Americans - a must have!.......2005-05-09
What a difference of few decades make. When I was a youngster the founders were all revered and taught in school. Nowadays, they are almost ignored and condemned for not conforming to our modern view of morality. Of course, the present view is both arrogant and ignorant because we assume that future generations will believe as we do and lacks the humility to realize that the human condition is fraught with weakness and sin as well as triumph and wisdom.
Thomas Jefferson was one of the most remarkable men this country or any country has ever produced. All you need do is sample these writings and you will begin to understand the powers of his mind, the charisma he manifested, the range of his interests, and the paradoxical foibles as well. The writings included here are his autobiography, his Notes on Virginia, all kinds of essays, letters, speeches, and selected other papers.
He writes of philosophy, English prosody, natural history, political observations, the history of the Founding, theological beliefs, and many other topics. Both of his inaugural addresses are included as well has his notices to Congress (what we now call State of the Union Addresses used to be handled in a letter). There are also letters to Indian tribes that are quite interesting.
The idea that the Indian tribes would want to remain as they were seemed a mistaken to notion to Jefferson and his contemporaries. They needed to understand that realities of their world had changed forever and they had great opportunities for improving their lives (as he saw it). Their rejection of overtures to assimilate seemed evidence of an imprisoned mind rather than what we would call a "lifestyle choice".
This is another of the great volumes from the Library of America. It includes a chronology of Jefferson's life, great notes on the texts included, and an index.
Something you really should have on your shelf of American History and our Founding.
Excellent Comprehensive Collection.......2003-04-26
This edition of Jefferson's writings is an excellent comrehensive collection. Edited by Jefferson biographer Merrill Peterson this volume is a treasure.
It includes Jefferson's Anas, Autobiography, The Notes on Virginia( complete), Summary View of the Rights of British America, his version of the Declaration of Independence, numerous public papers, and addresses. This volume is a must have for the Jefferson reader. It also very necassary for the current state of the American Republic which would be wise to hear the words of this great man. A great buy!

Customer Reviews:
I AM THE EX-WIFE OF PAUL BRUCE.......2006-01-05
Of course I have read his book. Also, knew some of his fellow S.A.S. friends. DO NOT listen to the RUBBISH of some reviewers who only knew half the story. Like anyone else who is controversial, there are many who have an investment in putting his true story down. I speak unbiasedly about Paul, as we are divorced and I'm married again.
But this man has not lied. He was out the army and passed the time of the silence word keeping. The Government heard of him exposing them and so they tried to quiet him. Paul was not treated very well and accidently found himself lying on floors and grounds, He does not take to threats and so the story came out. He was arrested, for them to obtain his written apology which came out in a newspaper, his family would have suffered otherwise.
Luckily some other S.A.S. from British Execution Squads, had been speaking to a Colonel, who wrote his review on the back cover of the second publication. Paul Bruce was vindicated and acclaimed one of the bravest men ever. Which of course he was, the deal he did with the publisher was criminal as the percentage of such a best selling book, has been extremely low. I even hawked it around booksellers and helped for extra sales.
Because of the way Paul had been treated by the British Army and the Government, he began to drink very heavily again. Paul was angry that he had written a book which could have cost him his life, and still no help with the trauma he suffered for doing the nasty jobs. No thank you, housing, pension, or mental help.Rehab he got for himself eventually, but he was already ruined.
Paul is killing himself with drink and he does not care. He's been through hell and can not handle life. His children, boy and a girl, suffer from seeing their father like this. I think Paul Bruce deserved something for trying to stop the lies and killings in Ireland. He may not have developed his self-destruct button.
The book was not well written, mistakes and sentences running to long. But it was the typist at the publisher who wrote it whilst Paul was talking the story to him. This man is mentioned on the book and got good remuneration for it too. As much as Paul got. What do you think of that. And Paul can not take the book and have that movie made, as John Blake has kept all the rights for ever. Paul found even at the end his trust was misplaced. Story of his life.

http://www.nics.gov.uk/press/ruc/nemesis.htm
QUOTE: "THE NEMESIS FILE: A TRUE STORY OF AN EXECUTION SQUAD
The Royal Ulster Constabulary has for some time been making enquiries into alleged serious criminal offences, primarily as a result of allegations made in the book "The Nemisis File: the true story of an Execution Squad" which is published by Blake Publishing.
As part of our continuing enquiries, and having regard to the seriousness of the allegations made in the book, the book's author was arrested by RUC officers under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and was interviewed at Castlereagh Police Station, Belfast.
Enquiries into the matter have now been completed and we are satisfied that the allegations contained in the book are not true in fact or substance and this includes an assertion that the author was at some time a member of the Special Air Services Regiment. The RUC is satisfied that the author has not been concerned, either directly or indirectly, in the commission of any serious criminal offence whilst serving in the Province during the period February _ June 1972 when he served as a vehicle mechanic with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. The RUC considers the book "The Nemesis File: the true story of an Execution Squad" as a work of fiction and accordingly the investigation is now closed". UNQUOTE
good fiction.......2002-03-29
I have just arrived halfway into this book and decided to check it out on the net, and found out its a load of fiction its a pity i was starting to enjoy it. I was a bit suspicious when on page 96 he states he was issued with a SMG which is the STERLING L2A3 9MM so taking 2 magazines of 7.62mm rounds would be pointless.I now have read that Paul Bruce has since been arrested by the RUC and charged with wasting police time and they cant find any truth in his story.I also believe that if the British Gov intended to assasinate terrorists they would use the sercurity services and not the high profile SAS.I will continue to read on and just enjoy it as a piece of fiction.
excellent book.......2002-03-14
For those of you loyalists to the british crown, I say remember the "Guildford Four" and the fraudulent quack investigation that widgery used to force troopers to lie about the Bloody Sunday terrorist attack by british soldiers on unarmed Catholic protestors. These soldiers now say they never came under gunfire on January 30, 1972. If you keep those blatant miscarriages of justice in mind you will enjoy this book and believe it is quite possibly true.
Fun read but total (...).......2001-12-07
Bruce was arrested by N. Ireland police and charged with "obstructing police" after they investigated his claims and found
absolutly no evidence to support them. But give him credit, he wrote a great yarn. Shame on all you left wing, anti gov. types that fell for it.
Book Description
In 1994 up to one million people were killed in Rwanda in a deliberate, public and political campaign. For five years, Linda Melvern has worked on the story of this great crime, and this book, a classic piece of investigative journalism, is the result. The new and startling information this book contains has the making of an international scandal. Melvern reveals how the great powers failed to heed the warnings of the coming catastrophe, andrefused to recognize the genocide when it began, ignoring obligations under international law, specifically the genocide convention. A set of secret documents leaked to the author from within the Security Council proves that the circumstances of the genocide were suppressed or ignored.
Customer Reviews:
Fine words that counted for nothing.......2003-07-25
After all the fine words and 'never agains' the truth is out. Genocide will slip right in front of major organs of news and nothing happens to stop it.
This short but detailed account of the Rwanda genocide 1994 is both low-key and shocking and needs examination.
Is anyone interested in Rwanda?.......2002-01-22
Probably, the story of Rwandan genocide is the most shocking international scandal of the post World War II era. The book is a brilliant reconstruction of that time, written with amazing clarity and based on well established facts.
In three months of 1994 about one million people was killed in organised genocide. The killing rate was five times faster than that achieved by the Nazis during WWII holocaust. But on the contrary to the Nazis, the Rwandan genocide happened in the full light of the international media, with the full knowledge of the UN Security Council and the Western governments.
Linda Melvern describes and documents in detail the role of the West in the genocide.
The story is so bad that almost all of the publishers in the UK refused to publish this book with comments like "the story is really too awful" or "I cannot see people forking out money to read about such an unspeakable subject..."
Do you think you can fork out some money for the truth? I think this book is certainly worth any money.
A People Betrayed.......2000-11-14
`Quite extraordinary: precise, and yet overwhelming; a fine balance in the face of depravity... Linda Melvern has written an extraordinary account of the Rwanda genocide, and the shocking failure of the West to lift a finger... What Melvern demonstrates so powerfully is that where Western geopolitical interests are absent, Western morality and `civilised' concerns are nowhere to be found ... A brave and compelling book.' - Professor Richard Falk, Center of International Studies, Princeton University
`This is a devastating account of lies, deceit, complacency and tragic neglect.... All we can hope is that this fine book will provide lessons for the future, because it provides all of us who lobby and campaign for early warning systems and conflict prevention with invaluable evidence. Looking around the world, you wonder what has been learnt since 1994. Linda Melvern deserves our thanks for investing so much in breaking the silence and revealing the truth.' - Glenys Kinnock, MEP; Chair, Forum on Early Warning And Early Response (FEWER)
'What happened in Rwanda is one of the most appalling, heartbreaking tragedies that the world has known. Why did it occur? And what more could have been done to prevent it? This serious, very thorough attempt to answer those questions will be essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand what happened. This is a powerful and important book.' - The Right Reverend Richard Harries, Bishop of Oxford
`A riveting and well-researched account of the horrendous crimes committed in Rwanda while an indifferent world, to its shame, looked the other way. There are grim lessons here for everyone, from international statesmen and politicians to responsible citizens and decent human beings everywhere' - Dame Margaret Anstee
'This is a very important book. It is a book that a large number of people should read....what is good about the book is that it shows the big picture. It shows the failure that actually took place. It tells the story of what really happened. An outstandingly good book... ...compelling.....its content is exceptional.' - Colin Keating, Secretary for Justice, New Zealand Ministry of Justice, and former New Zealand Ambassador to the UN
