Dragon Ball Z Vol.8.......2003-06-19
This is a good one! I don't like it as much as some other ones, but it's good! I reccomend buying it. All I can really tell yu without spoiling it is that it's about when they fight the Ginyu force!
A very good manga with a very good story.......2002-11-19
As an avid dragonball manga fan, I can safely say that this is perhaps the best dragonball [z] manga to date. The story, as anyone who read the summary will know, is when Son Goku lands on planet namek (after an intense training session in space), and then proceeds to save his friends and smack around the ginyu force. I won't go into to much detail, but the real prize of this manga is the accuracy of the dialogue. Since many American DBZ fans have only seen the pathetic, butchered, counterpart episodes on TV (Put out by our friends at FUNimation), this shows what Dragonball was intended to be. The language (while far and few between) is maintained, and all the frames are left undoctered (even a four-year old Son Gohan being smacked around by the evil Ricum).
While Dragonball fans will certainly see the beauty of this wonderful manga, non-dragonball fans will appreciate it too, with excellent fight scenes on par with Ryoichi Ikegami's (Crying Freeman, Samurai Crusader) fight scenes[as far as clarity goes].
Any manga fan should buy this. It will not dissapoint.
I am so cool.......2002-06-22
This book was one of the best in the series. It fetures the battle with the goofy but strong ginyu force. If you enjoy the show you will love seeing it in its original Magna(Japanese comic) formate! Also this book is the first in the series to show Goku fight after his 100times Gravity trianing It is a must buy.
Dragon Ball Z Graphic Novel 8.......2002-06-17
The seven wish-granting Dragon Balls are in the hands of evil emperor Freeza! To stop him from becoming immortal, Gohan and Kuririn and their unlikely ally Vegeta must defeat the remaining Ginyu Force, the four greatest fighters in the galaxy. But it doesn't look good. Once again, our outmatched heroes face incredible odds in a fight for dear life and their only hope is hurtling towards them on a spaceship with an interior pressure of 100 Gs! The mysterious and strangely changed Son Goku is on his way.

Artistic tour de force from Brian Froud.......2007-02-22
Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Letters Upright Desk Set is a cut above the average set of illustrated notelets on the market. Brian Froud's fairy art not only exhibits an outstanding command of colour, line and composition but also bespeaks a unique sense of humour and character. The five subjects are each repeated three times for a total of 15 notelets with accompanying envelopes and are presented in a very attractively decorated sturdy millboard case - just the gift for any lover of Brian Froud's imaginative creations.

Jeff Palmer is HOT!.......2003-12-29
I've never read a more revealing interview about my favorite star, and this is it, now that he's retired. He trashes Falcon and people he's worked with, and other stars talk about how they first realized how they knew what they were packing, etc. Great stuff!
It's What's Between the Ears that Counts.......2000-01-08
It was a pleasure to read about some of the 'classic' stars which are no longer in the business. It is interesting to compare their comments to the newcomers comments. Some of them haven't given interviews before and come up with some interesting answers to the questions. Fast read. Makes you want to read the second in this series with other interviews.
Need for Improvement.......1999-11-27
Over all the book was a great insight into these so called stars and it was good on given us the vital stats on each star. I was disappionted that there was not more issues of their true sexuality but I shall digress there was not enough pictures! But mickey could have given us more information on whether they were single or not and what their future plans were and where we could contact them.
Very Bad Boys, with Very Good Things.......1999-04-17
Yes, the interviewer does talk about himself a lot, but it sounds like he's been in the business a long time and he's someone who has given a true face to these guys. No other reviews or interviews I've read about these stars (and I'm big fans of ones like Will Clark and Cole Tucker) have had anything as revealing as these. Wait 'til you read about Adam Hart, there's more new stuff about Rex Chandler than anything, and I have the world's largest collection on him.
Mickey may brag about knowing all these studs, but he doesn't flirt with them, in fact, he keeps a proper journalistic distance. We just all wish we were him, that's all.

Five Stars.......2007-08-08
An excellent book Margaret lives in an orphan in London while waiting to save up enough money for a ticket to America where her brother William in Boston. Margaret gets a chance to when Mrs. Carstairs wants a complain to accompany her to America aboard Titanic. Having never had money Margaret's impressions on the ship, people and Mrs. Carstairs are very intersting. She meets Robert a Steward on her floor whom she likes. Margaret was very brave during the sinking and I liked how she first decided not to get on one of the lifeboats. I was saddened though at Robert's death. It was a very good story.
Very sad, but good book!.......2007-05-30
Hey!;)
I love dear america, and have written reviews on a lot of them. This one was like, the fiftenth I read? (maybe twentieth???) and I loved it. I reread it more times than I can count! It's very touching and sad; I lvoe the author's style of writing. It has a good plot. There aren't many books about the titanic, especially in a young woman's perspective. The plot to this book is a little similair to the movie, "The Titianic", but not enough that it's obvois or annoying. The only parts that are similair to the movie is the relationship between Margret and Robert, and the small love scene. Besides that, there's no similarities. Again, this is an amaizng book, and I love it! a greta ddition to your historical fiction or dear america collection.
best young adult novel on the tragic sinking.......2007-05-05
A well-written and historically accurate telling of the Titanic disaster from the perspective of a young girl immigrating to the United States as a companion to a wealthy passenger. Margaret's perspective is that of an outsider, not only to the wealthy culture, but to the adult and American culture. Probably the best young adult fiction based on the disaster, as it's true to history (the period and the event) and the characters are real (Margaret is spunky, but obedient, emotional but constrained). It captures the emotional tragedy, the spirit and feel of the horrific event. For adults and the Titanic fascinated, the story isn't anything new or original or especially engaging. Grade: B+
The Ship of Dreams.......2007-03-08
Everyone called the Titanic the ship of dreams, and for Margaret Anne Brady, it was a dream. She would be traveling with a lady from London England to find her brother, whom she hasn't seen since her parents died a few years back. Margaret was leaving her friends which was her family to come to America on the Titanic. She loved it. It was everything she dreamed off until that dreadful day the Titanic sank. If I was her I would have never made it through the night of freezing cold weather with only a over coat. She had no family just Mrs. Carstairs who she was traveling with. I don't know how anyone could have gone through that. It truly would have been a nightmare.
Excellent Book Collection.......2007-02-26
I have started reading the "Dear America" book collection to my little sister. We started with Margaret and just loved the book so we bought another and then another. My brother has even started listening now and we have gone through eight or nine of the books and are continuing to read more. The thing about these books that make them so AMAZING is that they not only have an interesting story line for people of all ages (making it so enjoyable for people of all age groups) but they are also very historically acurate and well researched. My sister told me one day that her class was covering The Mayflower and she already knew everything and she got up to share more! These books are so educational and also fun. The one thing to throw iin as a warning would be the fact that they are VERY real to history-- and sometimes they can be very graphic. All in all these books are five star! Def. worth the investment!

ASIN: 1853675032 |
Book Description
Saladin is a legendary figure in the history of the Middle East. Saladin's rise to fame in the tumultuous arena of twelfth-century Middle Eastern politics was rapid, and he quickly established himself as a military commander of genius, a man of honor, and an intrepid statesman. This classic detailed biography of Saladin and history of his life and times was written by the eminent historian Stanley Lane-Poole. The author, able to access the rich and colorful chronicles of Arab and Moslem historians, provides us with a brilliant insight into the life and deeds of this warrior-monarch. Based on a lifetime of study.
Customer Reviews:
On the jihad trail with the Sultan.......2005-06-30
Recently, I saw the 2005 film THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, a sword and shield epic centered upon the 1187 recapture of Jerusalem from the Christians by Sultan Yusuf Ibn Najni al-Din Ayyub Ibn Shadlhi Abu'l-Muzaffar Salah al-Din al-Malik al-Nasir, aka "Saladin". The hero of the film was not Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), but rather Balian (Orlando Bloom), who, as the film opens, is sweating over a hot forge as a sword maker in some dump of a rural French town in the early 1180s. Then, along comes Godfrey (Liam Neeson), a knight and minor noble back from Palestine, who reveals himself as Balian's previously unknown father. Godfrey persuades Balian to take up a sword in defense of the Holy Land. On the return trip, Godfrey dies, but not before knighting his son. Balian subsequently inherits his father's castle of Ibelin within the Kingdom of Jerusalem, becomes chummy with King Baldwin IV and his sister Sibylla (Eva Green), finds himself defending the Holy City almost single-handed against Saladin's horde after the Christian army's disastrous defeat at Hitton, and ultimately returns to France, where he ostensibly lives happily ever after with Sibylla, who now holds the title Queen of Jerusalem. Uh-huh. So, I picked up SALADIN AND THE FALL OF JERUSALEM to find out the real story.
Penned in 1898 by Stanley Lane-Poole, this volume is a competent and informative bio of the great Muslim leader, who was respected and praised even by his Crusader foes. Admittedly, the first several chapters dealing with "Saladin's world", and which describe the Muslim politics of the region and the events of the First Crusade prior to Saladin's birth and rise to power, make for educational, but less than riveting, reading. It's only with Saladin's accession as the Sultan of Egypt in 1171 that his life really becomes interesting as he subsequently labors militarily and politically to unite the Muslim Middle East under one rule, i.e. his, drive the Unbelievers into the sea, and topple the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
The book's 19th century roots show even in this 2002 reprint of the original. The occasional map, while certainly not indecipherable, doesn't have the clean look of one of modern construction. More telling, the author infrequently sprinkles the text with passages from original Latin or French sources, which go untranslated. Presumably, the average reader at the turn of the 19th century was more educated and literate than now and could be expected to get along as required in something other than English. This new reprint does, however, include a helpful section of black and white photographs that apparently, because of the presence of automobiles, didn't appear in the first release.
The tone of Lane-Poole's narrative is one of detached and uncritical admiration for his hero, as justifiably it should be, since Saladin demonstrated more chivalry, magnanimity, and honor throughout his career than his chief Crusader opponent from June 8, 1191 to October 9, 1192, King Richard I of England. Indeed, the author, who's otherwise adulatory of the Lionheart's prowess in battle, doesn't shirk from recounting Richard's barbarous order to massacre 2,700 Muslims taken prisoner during his capture of Acre, an order that the author terms "cruel and cowardly", and would today be cause for a war crimes tribunal. Well, so much for the flower of English chivalry.
SALADIN AND THE FALL OF JERUSALEM should satisfy a reader such as myself that seeks a general knowledge of Saladin and his accomplishments without getting too obsessive about it.
And what of Balian? While he was one of only three knights left after the Battle of Hitton to defend Jerusalem, and who indeed played the key role in the defense of the city and subsequent surrender negotiations with Saladin, Balian had only a relatively small part in the rest of the story - so small that I had to resort to a Web encyclopedia to get more info about the man. What I learned there was that his saga in THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN was rampant fiction evidently hallucinated by a Hollywood screenwriter in the throes of an illegal substance. Especially that bit about running off with Sybilla. Gee, why doesn't that surprise me?

Book Description
Subject to Debate, Katha Pollitt's column in The Nation, has offered readers clear-eyed yet provocative observations on women, politics, and culture for more than seven years. Bringing together eighty-eight of her most astute essays on hot-button topics like abortion, affirmative action, and school vouchers, this selection displays the full range of her indefatigable wit and brilliance. Her stirring new Introduction offers a seasoned critique of feminism at the millennium and is a clarion call for renewed activism against social injustice.
Customer Reviews:
You say it girl!.......2004-01-03
This is the best book I've read in a long time. I've read it 85 times because it's so good. I have wanted to say everything Katha Pollitt has written in this book. And the book is also a fun read with lots of very dry sarcasm that keeps the reader on her toes. This is a book that looks at the larger (and smaller) political issues of our time with a very even-handed approach. Pollitt makes fun of both republicans and democrats and talks about politics in a way that just makes sense. Her arguments are clear and concise - each essay is only a few pages long, so you don't get bored reading and reading about any particular topic. There is no sacred cow here. Pollitt speaks her mind and doesn't hesitate to let a woman or two have it if their political views or policies are out of line. I highly recommend this book. It makes sense and it will make you laugh.
Arguably the best columnist in the United States today.......2001-05-03
This collection of Pollitt's columns for The Nation shows all her virtues: her considerable wit, her intelligence, her ability to present feminist views in a clear and coherent manner. She has a keen eye for the media's fatuities; its tendency to split the difference and to move to the stronger side, its fear that it will be viewed as too liberal, the fact that most journalists and columnists are male which does not prevent them from whining about how powerful feminists are.
Consider these thoughts on the perniciousness of sports: "Fans say athletics promote values and so they do--the wrong values, like the childish confusion of physical prowess with `character' that is such a salient feature of the O.J. Simpson trial. Sports pervert education, draining dollars from academic programs and fostering anti-intellectualism. They skew the priorities of the young, especially the poor, black young, by offering them the will-o'-the-wisp incentive of a scholarship, physically gifted kids might not be so ready to blow off their schoolwork. Why not give scholarships for art or music instead?"
Or consider this line about funding for the Arts and funding for NASA: "Representative Sonny Bono says he's never met anyone who benefited from public arts funding; well, I've never met anyone who cares what kind of rocks Mars has." How can one not admire a critic who has no patience with the Clintons, but recognizes that Nader's Green Party is a non-starter? How can one not admire a critic who prefers The Man who Loved Children, Song of Solomon, The Assistant, and Tongo-Bungay to the peculiar list drawn up by the Modern Library? Everyone should read a woman who castigates the ponderousness of communitarianism, the bile of a Farrakhan, and the shallowness of a Mary Daly. Everyone should read her, period.
Thanks Katha, from a strengthened liberal.......2001-04-23
Katha has insightful, thought-provoking views on everything from welfare mothers . . . to abortion . . . to gun-control . . . to marriage and divorce . . . to school vouchers. Reading her wonderful, witty essays helped me gain new perspective on several issues. That is not to say that I agreed with everything she said, but I always enjoyed reading her well-written, funny, honest essays. I devoured this book in a couple of days of reading it when I could steal a moment or two. It is hard to put down. I feel renewed pride in calling myself a liberal.
It's All Here...Clinton, OJ, Feminism, Education, etc...........2001-04-18
For those of you who missed out on all the now-absurd controversies of the late 90's, read this book cover to cover---even if you don't buy into Katha Pollitt's worldview (or even The Nation's worldview, for that matter). Pollitt is a fine thinker who, in this collection more so than in her previous collection, shows that she is indeed capable of casting criticism any which way she sees fit, to the left or to the right.
Of her other book, readers have written that Pollitt isn't "brave" enough to take on the challenges facing ALL women (i.e. minority women, uneducated women, women who don't live in NYC). True enough, at times we know where she's headed from the first few sentences alone; and there's a lot of typical Paglia-bashing and catering to the liberal, educated masses. But Pollitt's scope is ranged in this collection.
In one piece, Pollitt scathingly, yet reasonably, condemns Mary Daly's refusal to allow a male student into her all-female course on feminist ethics; in another piece cleverly titled "The Million Man Mirage," she criticizes Louis Farrakhan's brand of homophobic, racist, anti-Semitic, and sexist political thinking which somehow passes for "liberal." And of course, Pollitt brings into light many issues of importance for woman and men alike: the need for reproductive rights, a modest proposal for deadbeat dads, the limitations of single-sex education and school prayer, the double standards facing professional women, marriage and its discontents, etc etc etc.
Basically, this collection is for anyone wanting to "put things into perspective" and make sense of the senseless.
Clear, insightful, and powerful.......2001-04-03
Katha Pollitt has a way of getting to the heart of the matter. So, for example, in an essay about the school-uniforms discussion in New York City, she starts out by noting that the "public school systen has libraries without books," that a girl was killed in one school by falling debris - and then, later - she is onto the school uniforms debate - in perspective. If you read the Nation, these essays are a terrific reprise. If you don't, you will find that they are smart, brief (a few pages at most; think of a long, utterly incisive newspaper editorial), and for students, a series of very good examples of political writing. Humor, wit, and a high level of caring about the things that matter. Some are grounded in the politics and goings-on of New York City, where Pollitt lives, but many are of national (and international) interest. Great collection.
Book Description
The highly variable North American red crossbill complex has presented one of the most controversial problems in avian systematics. Although crossbills wander nomadically and breed all year, they have not become homogenized in bill and body size.
