One time, on a flight from Chicago to San Francisco, I was quite certain that the amorous couple sitting directly in front of me were getting it on during the in-flight movie. I tried mightily to ignore the odd seat movements and the moans and sighs, but it did distract me enough that I couldn't follow the story line in Forrest Gump. I wish those folks had read this book before getting on the plane.

The Art of Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow"
ASIN: 0671036653 |
Amazon.com
It's 1799, and a charming bumbler of a constable has been sent from New York City to the quiet little village of Sleepy Hollow where three beheaded bodies await him. Hoping to match deductive reasoning against the superstitions of the villagers, Ichabod Crane sets out to determine the motive of the killer at large. Unfortunately, the killer does not seem to be of the living, breathing variety; the specter of the Headless Horseman has been haunting the hamlet for over 20 years. With the help of the exquisite daughter of his host, Ichabod delves dangerously deep into the mystery.
Based on Washington Irving's classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, this bone-chilling story takes the premise, setting, and characters from the original to create a fresh, spooky tale. Ichabod Crane (played by Johnny Depp in Tim Burton's movie adaptation) is a more appealing character than Irving's constable; here his clumsiness endears, while the original Ichabod is a figure for mockery. Readers may be surprised at the understated hilarity of Irving's original story, included in its entirety following the adaptation. Don't be content with the film version alone--this story is well worth a read in the gloaming of the day. Includes eight pages of full-color photos from the film. --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
HEADS WILL ROLL
It is 1799, the eve if a new century. In New York City, young Constable Ichabod Crane is eager to use his latest scientific methods and his powers of deduction to solve the most brutal of crimes. But nothing can prepare him for the shocking murders that take him far from the city's cobblestones to the eerie town of Sleepy Hollow.
Awaiting him are three beheaded bodies, all apparently victims of a legendary Headless Horseman returned from the grave to exact revenge. With the help of an orphaned child and a beautiful young woman, Ichabod uses reason to confront the horrors of the unexplained.
But the reality of Sleepy Hollow's waking nightmare is always before him. A reality where witches cast spells in the darkened woods...trees bleed...and a demon rides at night.

AWESOME.......2003-11-24
i love this story. it's always been my favorite short story, and since johnny depp is my favorite actor, christina ricci my favorite actress, and Tim Burton one of the best directors ever, of course i loved the movie, too. i hadn't read this adaptation before, and even though i didn't like the way is was put together as much as the original, is was all in all a great book. YAY!
If you loved Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, this book is a must.......2003-09-07
This book is awesome for one who enjoyed Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, and are interested of reading the Washington Irving story which the movie was based upon. That is what happened with me. And you can't go wrong for this great price you can get both.
Sleepy Hollow by Tim Burton the book has much added dialogue and scenes that wern't seen in the movie, and Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a timeless classic but it didn't intrigue me as much as Tim Burton's version.
Review.......2002-03-13
This book is about a mystery of a killer. There are three bodies that turn up beheaded and no one knows who the killer might be. A frail schoolteacher from the town of Sleepy Hollow named Ichabod Crane goes out on a journey to try and find out who the killer might be. He is surprised to find out that the killer is actually someone that returned from the dead to seek revenge upon the town. Ichabod Crane is sets out to hunt down the headless horseman that has killed many people. The daughter of the host he is staying with that he is determined to marry accompanies him. He thinks he can beat the horseman by using his brain and they set out on a journey full of spook to try and beat the horseman at his own game.
This book is really great for children because it is a mysterious tale that many children can get into. This is a book that can be for adults but it is written in a way that children can read it and love it as well. It keeps kids thinking and wondering what is going to happen next. This is something that a book should do because it keeps kids interested and into the book.
Exciting Novel.......2001-05-28
Sleepy Hollow (the new version) was a very exciting tale. It is quite different from the original version yet contained more thrilling events. The beginning was a little slow but the last couple chapters wizzed by. The original story was short and could have elaborated more on the last scene to make it better. All in all it was a good novel
Every bit as good as the movie - and in some ways, better.......2001-01-03
Sleepy Hollow is my favorite movie. At the time I started reading this book, I had seen it 42 times; the movie already having debuted in movie theaters over a year ago. I've read quite a few books on the movie and the original story, and this book including both certainly is worthy of your money. I couldn't put it down and I finished it in a day. It has the same plot, of course, as the movie; but with more insight. You get into the characters' heads and know what they're thinking. There is much detail cut out of the movie that is revealed here; so many things in the book you pick up that would be otherwise impossible to learn through the movie. I strongly reccomend this book to anyone - whether you have seen the movie or not. And the original Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving that is included is an added bonus!

Customer Reviews:
Not what I thought it would be.......2004-06-01
This is a good book about developing a new product Process. I recommend it for anyone working to develop a product development Process. It has less to offer directly to product managers, entrepreneurs or anyone on the front lines of launching new products.
The subtitle of this book is a misnomer. There are few specifics regarding "Creating and Launching Superior New Products". As that's why I purchased the book, the first 100+ pages were..... disappointing. A more apt subtitle/marketing proposition would be "Developing and Managing New Product Development Efforts"
That said, "Product Leadership" will be a very useful resource to me for several reasons:
1) Comprehensive checklists of what to consider when working with new products
2) A clear framework for Managing New Product Development (Stage-Gate).
3) A terrific introduction to product portfolio management
Pros
- Clear, consise, well-written by an expert and well-edited
- Breezy helpful checklists easy to revisit as needed
- Clear, simple frameworks help focus on the big picture for the company.
Cons
- Few case studies or anecdotes
- Not much here about how to actually create and launch the new products
Six principles and more for fundamental guidance.......2003-12-28
As a PM, conflicts between company departmens are routine, 6 principles based on various research Mr. Cooper provided do guide me through the product initiative to its GA (general available). They also formed my defense to do the right thing while to maintain the time to market or to choose.
Personally I think, these principles address the requirements of good product development processes, and one of the instances is his Stage-Gate. That is, I do need to understand the principles in a sophiscated way to faciliate its benefits in my real life with my grasp of previous experience and other theories or rules.
In addition, this book provides some general concepts used in industry product development process. Whereas, the most valuable forceful points come from the six principles.
Technical perspective of product development process.......2002-09-12
Excellent text book style on the product development process. First part of the book is a bit dry and technical but does its job of highlighting the necessities of succesful product development and management.
Later in the book the principles are applied in more real examples that are easier to comprehend.
Overall a very good book for Product Managers new to the task or looking to refocus their energy. There are other books just as good and a bit less technical so don't end your reading with this book.
Author's Recommendations Similar to FDA's Design Control.......2001-05-30
I purchased Dr. Cooper's book on recommendation of an attendee at one of my seminars. He commented on the similarities between the book's 'stages' and 'go/kill' gates (decision points) and the FDA's medical device design control requirements. After having read the book, I must agree. Dr Cooper recommendations confirm my own experience in project leadership, developed in the '80's at a large multinational pharma/device manufacturer, modified by the recent requirements for 'design control' mandated upon the medical device industry by the FDA (and similar to ISO 9000). I've always stressed the use of regulatory requirements to achieve business goals, not just to satisfy some regulatory entity. Dr. Cooper clearly shows how adding such similar discipline to the product development cycle, especially at those starting phases (R&D) where many scientists, engineers, and senior management feel control stifles creativity, does just the opposite. His (and the FDA's) system add predicability, decision making over a company's entire product development portfolio, to reduce cycle time, reduce overall product devel. costs, ensure the 'voice of the customer' is part of the design, and increases tremendously the chance of a successful new (or line extension) product. I highly recommend the book.
Adopting actions listed in this book would be a nightmare.......2001-05-04
I purchased this book primarily on the positive ratings. Anyone who has spent time actually developing new products would see that this book is a recipe for gridlock, stonewalling and endless corporate posturing in any American company. The author's assertion on the widespread adoption of his Star Gate process is also dubious. It appears this book was written by consultants for other consultants. Product, marketing and brand managers should avoid.
If you want a book on how to develop products I would suggest the Fast Forward MBA in Project Management. While not specific to product development, it gives you the background and tools for more effectively manage big projects (e.g. product development).
Book Description
Elizabeth Cady Stanton—along with her comrade-in-arms, Susan B. Anthony—was one of the most important leaders of the movement to gain American women the vote. But, as Vivian Gornick argues in this passionate, vivid biographical essay, Stanton is also the greatest feminist thinker of the nineteenth century. Endowed with a philosophical cast of mind large enough to grasp the immensity that women’s rights addressed, Stanton developed a devotion to equality uniquely American in character. Her writing and life make clear why feminism as a liberation movement has flourished here as nowhere else in the world.
Born in 1815 into a conservative family of privilege, Stanton was radicalized by her experience in the abolitionist movement. Attending the first international conference on slavery in London in 1840, she found herself amazed when the conference officials refused to seat her because of her sex. At that moment she realized that “In the eyes of the world I was not as I was in my own eyes, I was only a woman.” At the same moment she saw what it meant for the American republic to have failed to deliver on its fundamental promise of equality for all. In her last public address, “The Solitude of Self,” (delivered in 1892), she argued for women's political equality on the grounds that loneliness is the human condition, and that each citizen therefore needs the tools to fight alone for his or her interests.
Vivian Gornick first encountered “The Solitude of Self” thirty years ago. Of that moment Gornick writes, “I hardly knew who Stanton was, much less what this speech meant in her life, or in our history, but it I can still remember thinking with excitement and gratitude, as I read these words for the first time, eighty years after they were written, ‘We are beginning where she left off.’ “
The Solitude of Self is a profound, distilled meditation on what makes American feminism American from one of the finest critics of our time.
Customer Reviews:
Connects the Dots.......2006-10-24
I enjoyed reading this short book about Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her times because it told me just enough about her and fitted her thoughts and ideas into what was going on intellectually in the United States at the time. I appreciated the connections made between her type of feminist thinking and that of others before and after. It made me think, too, about my own feminist philosophy. And, once again, I was surprised by the depths of male chauvinism through the ages.
Interesting Ideas.......2005-12-04
It seems that ECS was on to "self esteem" a century before it had a name. The author starts here and ties the book up contemplating the loneliness of radicals and those ahead of their times.
In the middle the author strays from the idea of self, but the rambling is interesting. We learn more about how the 19th century feminism grew out of the abolitionist movement (just as 20th century feminism grew out of the civil rights movement) something of the 19th century lecture circuit, and divisions in the women's suffrage movement, etc.
I'd have liked to have seen more on the idea of "self" and/or the "solitude of self" in this period, but found enough other material in the book to keep me reading.
Feminism and Political Affairs of ..........2005-10-08
This book is a study of Elizabeth Cady Stanton's final address in 1892 called "Solitude of Self" in which she feels the human condition we all suffer sometimes, loneliness. When she went to London in 1840, the way she was treated made her declare, "I am only a woman."
In this different perspective on woman's suffrage and such, the Civil War is called a "Revolution" of sorts, but it was a fight to the bitter end, a war to remember and which may never be over in people's minds. She talks about the errors of the past, equality for all, and a century of wrong.
Elizabeth, from upstate New York and later Boston, was concerned with aboliton, suffrage, and the power of religious doctrine. She spoke in the Grand Opera House in 1975 Chicago to a standing-room only audience. She was a political activist of her time. This book is based on letters, diaries, speeches, and Mrs. Stanton's THE WOMEN'S BIBLE.
Vivian Gornick has written FIERCE ATTACHMENTS and APPROACHING EYE LEVEL previously.
Book Description

Book Description
The modern means of communication have turned the world into an information fishbowl and, in terms of foreign policy and national security in post-Cold War power politics, helped transform international power politics. Information operations (IO), in which time zones are as important as national boundaries, is the use of modern technology to deliver critical information and influential content in an effort to shape perceptions, manage opinions, and control behavior. Contemporary IO differs from traditional psychological operations practiced by nation-states, because the availability of low-cost high technology permits nongovernmental organizations and rogue elements, such as terrorist groups, to deliver influential content of their own as well as facilitates damaging cyber-attacks (âhactivismâ) on computer networks and infrastructure. As current vice president Dick Cheney once said, such technology has turned third-class powers into first-class threats.
Conceived as a textbook by instructors at the Joint Command, Control, and Information Warfare School of the U.S. Joint Forces Staff College and involving IO experts from several countries, this book fills an important gap in the literature by analyzing under one cover the military, technological, and psychological aspects of information operations. The general reader will appreciate the examples taken from recent history that reflect the impact of IO on U.S. foreign policy, military operations, and government organization.
Customer Reviews:
a Good Begining.......2007-03-20
The meaning of the tem `Information Operations' (IO) is still evolving, but it is generally recognized to be inextricably part of the concept of Network Centric Warfare which was made possible by what the U.S. Military refer to as the `Global Information Grid' (GID). Which is to say that the IO concept is essential to developing military strategy and force structure planning. So what is it? The simplest definition of IO that is currently in fashion would appear to be that it refers to techniques and actions that adversely affect an enemy's ability to collect, manage, and use information while defending ones own abilities in this regard.
All this is by way of introduction to this book, which although written by a committee of U.S. and Australian IO theorist and operators, is a pretty good over view of how IO works both in theory and, interestingly enough, in practice. The book makes perfectly valid claims that IO clearly must be based on effective intelligence production and good information systems. Ironically both defensive and offensive IO are dependant on access to accurate and timely information (knowledge) to be successful. In this context it was rather surprising that the book did not make more of an issue of the dangers of disinformation and corrupted information to IO success although it did discuss psychological warfare as an aspect of IO. Still the book is for now a good primer on IO and understanding the complexities of war in the 21st Century.
Yet this book is not the definitive statement on IO, rather it is another step on the road of the U.S. Military to transformation to force structures based on Network Centric Warfare. Incidentally for those interested in that concept I suggest they read "The Future of War" by Mark D. Mandeles (Amazon.com). A rather different but equally relevant view of IO can be found in "Information Operations' by Robert D. Steel (Amazon.com). Until the term `Information Operations' is finally established, it is a good idea to keep an open mind on what it means.
High level IO overview that can't be beat!.......2006-12-01
Info Ops: Warfare and Hard Reality of Soft Power is an awesome primer to information operations/information warfare (IO/IW). The book was originally written as a textbook for some high-level defense university classes, but has worked great as a layman's introduction to the field. In it you'll find many government agencies and the scope of their involvement in IO, great examples of IO/IW [save one example I'll mention later]
The book is the foundation to an IO/IW education, so it is a definite "must-purchase." Its low price may shy folks away, thinking its a "discount" overview - but that is a mistake in thinking, and maybe IO (deception) on the part of the publisher...
The one example of IO/IW I was disappointed in was mention of cyberspace exercises called Solar Sunrise and Elligible Receiver. The mainstream press have called them hoaxes or reporting blown out of proportion; the book does no better by using it as a "smoking gun" without the powder burns or shell casing. The mention of both exercises seem to be wrapped in the same mystery and hysteria as found on online conspiracy theory sites.
Other than that slight peeve, the book should be purchased to get the skinny on IO/IW.
Outstanding First Cut, Needs to Go Further.......2006-03-18
This is a first rate effort, but it is incomplete and overly U.S. centric. A new expanded edition is needed soonest.
For myself the best chapters were on "Intelligence Support: Foundations for Conducting IO" and "Information Projection: Shaping the Global Village." Other chapters on the language of IO, information protection, related and supporting activities, and implementing IO were good.
The most important point in this book from my point of view was its observation that modern war is only 15-25% military action, and the rest must be a unified national campaign that leverages all sources of national power **for which IO is the glue that provides the inter-agency coherence.** These authors understand and teach, very ably, how IO is at the heart of managing complex coalition contingency operations.
The book over-all shows a real appreciation for the role that must be played by non-military agencies, coalitions, and private sector organizations including religions, academics, and business as well as media personalities.
The discussion of the "information battlespace" is useful, as are the illustrations. There is an excellent "strategy to task" section helpful to anyone actually implementing IO.
The authors are to be commended for emphasizing that knowing the enemy is not enough--you must know yourself and be firmly grounded in reality rather than ideological fantasy, if the IO message is to have traction. The authors also address, diplomatically but directly, the limitations of the traditional insular military planning process (especially the secretive intelligence process), and clearly articulate the need for open processes that can embrace and leverage varied communities of interest, non-US as well as US.
The authors also raise an extremely important issue to which they cannot provide an answer, but which must be resolved sooner than later: the urgency of being able to educate Americans about global realities and threats, without being accused of propagandizing Americans. [This is one reason why Congressman Simmons, on both the House Armed Services Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee, is so important--he understands that the state intelligence centers and networks we are advocating can serve two functions: as bottom up dot collectors, and as disseminators of real world open source intelligence to the state and local publics.]
One minor nit: the authors assume that because most of the 9-11 hijackers had Saudi passports they were Saudi. My understanding is that they were a mixed bag with passports of convenience from Saudi Arabia for those who were not Saudi.
The book concludes with cursory attention to Russian, Chinese, and Australian IO doctrine and practices, and does not address Iranian, Indian, Pakistani, and Venezuelan-Cuban IO, which are of considerable importance.
The book, very understandably, does not spend a lot of time on Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) or the need to properly monitor all information in all languages all the time, but the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence has clearly articulated the need to do "universal coverage, 24/7, in all languages, at the neighbood level of granularity" (this is an abdiged paraphrase) and DoD appears well on its way to doing just that. I recommend that this book be read in conjunction with Max Manwaring and John Fishel's "Uncomfortable Wars Revisited," with Max Manwaring's edited work on "The Search for Security" which emphasizes key moral messages; and my own IO book, which focuses exclusively on information peacekeeping or the foreign language content side of IO, and has a comprehensive annotated bibliography. Specialty books that I recommend to IO practitioners include Larry Beinhart's "Fog Facts," Robert Cialdini's "INFLUENCE," Robert Parry's "Lost History," and John Hasling's "The Audience, the Message, the Speaker."
Discovering Practical Information Operations.......2004-08-23
Finally, here's a book that cuts through the dense brush of information operations theory and reaches a clearing where the reader can truly discover the practical application of information operations. The list of contributors is impressive...and all have practical experience in information operations. A must read for practitioners of IO.
The premier book on military Information Operations.......2004-07-13
This is the most up-to-date book on Information Operations I've read. There are over a dozen contributors from the US, UK and Australia, all of whom have hands-on Information Operations experience. It is must reading for anyone serious about this important field of military operations.

Old exquisite bird art reproduced with modern tech........1998-02-19
As many may know, John Gould(with the help of many) produced 418 hand coloured stone lithograph plates for his Monograph of the Hummingbirds which took 12 years to produce(1849-61). An original set sold recently for 1/4million dollars! At approx $100, this book gives a great deal of art bang for the buck! Albeit, the format is smaller and the exquisite hand coloring is lost to modern printing reproduction, it's a joy to own. Individual original plates are available at antique print shops($700-$2000 ea) and this book is your excellent reference for an contemplated purchase.
Beautiful book of fantastical hummingbirds, many now extinct.......1997-11-27
This is a beautiful coffee table book, filled with full-page illustrations of hummingbirds: some familiar, some fantastical, some, sadly, now extinct. Not just for hummingbird lovers. Anyone with an interest in nature will be delighted by some of these astonishingly wacky creatures. Each illustration is accompanied by a few concise paragraphs about the birds.
