I just love fabric from Japan and this book is filled with beautiful pictures of children's textiles and lot's of information on manufacturers, trends in colour and design etc.! There is also a section on anime fabrics which was so cute! This book is also available from the publisher directly.

As an artist and fashion stylist, I found this book particularly interesting and resourceful. The charming cover and delightful photographs provide an excellent visual tool for inspiration and design.

Daisy, Daisy...........2007-01-03

I purchased this volume as a gift for my Dad who was a big fan of L'il Abner in the 50's and 60's. Dad always liked Daisy Mae! I figured Dad who is a widower could use a little Daisy Mae in his life again. Of course I couldn't resist sitting down and reading the four volumes I bought for him- I did read L'il Abner when I was a kid in the 60's but a lot of it was way over my head back then. Now I can see it through adult eyes and I understand the satire and the subtle shades of humor far better then ever! It's been a fun and interesting meander down Memory Lane! Highly recommended for those who enjoy pure slapstick humor and outrageous satire!

Lil Abner always had a strong fan club that allowed the reprinting of the daily strips by Kitchen Sink press for about 25 volumes, which if there was no fan base, only one or two volumes would have been published.

In addition,we are very lucky that Frazetta's reputation and fan club would allow the printing of a comic strip that John Steinbeck once stated, its author, Al Capp, should be given the Putszler (excuse the spelling) prize.

Al Capp was a master satirist and storyteller, who would have one acclaim like Mark Twain or O'Henry if not for the snob attitude toward comic strips.

This is shown here. The 50-year-old color strips are re-printed in a fine manner with expert commentary about the period they were written in by Denis Kitchen.

Beware, they feature "politically incorrect" well-endowed women, and one main character, Daisy Mae, as mostly submissive, which would not be allowed in comic strips today as it would raise the ire of feminists and other "progressive" people.

On the other hand, it features the two main male characters, Abner and Pappy, as idiots or wimps, Abner and his brother Tiny as "hunks", and the one of the main women characters, Mammy as the leader of the Yokum clan, who occassionally beats Pappy, which are allowed in comic strips today as the "Progressives" seem to have no problem with this.

Remember, vintage comic strip reprints do not generate big bucks, some even lose money. They are produced out of great admiration for the strips, and we should be grateful for the publishers for doing so.

By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves. With some who are less mature, this the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.

Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews

Hilarious but marred by poor reproduction.......2005-01-03

I loved the material, but I wish the publishers had taken some care in reproducing the strips. Most look as if they are poor color copies of old Sunday papers. A very few appear to have been re-colored acceptably, but most are pretty darn sloppy.

Head for the hills!.......2004-07-10

This is the final volume in the series of reprints of Sunday Li'l Abner strips. They chose to focus on the years when Frank Frazzetta was drawing the majority of the Sunday strips. I wish they would have printed the entire run of the series, but that's their decision. Anyway, Li'l Abner was a great comic strip for most of it's run, and this time period was no exception. Anyone with an interest in old time comic strips should get this book.

first half is great.......2006-09-17

the first half of this book is great. dance facts are presented with humor and stories about individuals in the book are fun to read. once he gets into the russian imperial ballet though, the book tends to be not about dance anymore, but about music. the author looks at history from music's point of view and not from dance. that's sad, because the first part of the book was wonderful. i wish the author had been true to what he started out to do.

It really disappointed me, I didn't expect it.......2003-09-02

It might sound naive, but I was really disappointed by this book - I had really expected a lot more, or at least a little more. I can't barely remember when it was the last time I enjoyed less a book about ballet. The problem is, it "tries" to be witty and funny, but it's not. It's annoying and sometimes it gets to your nerves. If you don't know a word about dance, you won't learn anything about it with Mr. Barber's book. And if you are into ballet, you will get confused and angry by the lack of knowlegde and the sometimes really inaccuracy of the facts.
It might provide some cheap laughs here and there... mmmm... if that's all one aspires to, it's okay. But I feel cheated, I can't believe I actually paid the money and the shipping for this book.
Maybe the author should keep writing about music and leave ballet alone, please. I have heard his books on opera and music in general are really funny and nice. But as anyone can expect, I'm not going to order and pay for them, just in case.
Oh, some drawings are really nice.

Great book about the 70's black movies. I thought I seen them all but this book talked about movies I did'nt know about but would like to see, if I could just find all the videos! The art work alone is worth the price of the book! If you plan or get invited to a 70's party use this book as a guide to get that true afropicking,bellbottom,platform shoe wearing look.

Without a doubt one of the Baddest Books that i have ever read.this book talks about my Favorite ERA.it explains the importance of these films&Artists.cuz at the time Tinseltown wasn't happening.the Black Artists here&their Films kept the Lights&Power on.this book sheds Light on Many Topics.the Impact of the Images have Lasting Impact.I'M Glad that Many Artists in the book said that they couldn't stand the term Blaxploitation.I Agree.Hollywood is a Business if the films weren't happening&Making Profit they wouldn't be on display.No Impact,no Word of Mouth they wouldn't be Happening.not everything was cool or worth watching but it was the kind of Charge that is needed to Level the Playing Field.it left a Lasting Impression on Me&Countless others.this is a Must have.very Detailed.

Amazing, interesting and a dream coming reality.......2000-06-08

I was expecting this kind of book because I'm now deep into Blaxploitation era, but also curious about Black movements of the 60ies and 70ies. In a way I learned a lot of things. A big deception is Ron O' Neal (aka Priest in "Superfly") isn't there, and the authors could also have gotten Tamara Dobson, James Brown, the late Curtis Mayfield and Willie Hutch. But that's life ! A big book, great value for me

get bigger!.......2006-09-24

After reading all the negative reviews (one from a reviewer that admits he didn't even read the book???) I am a little confused. I just finshed reading Hedge Fund Masters and I really liked it.

The author comments on interviews with 80 hedge fund managers. He talks about the problems holding them back and keeping them from getting bigger, or keeping them from staying profitable. I am amazed that all these managers running huge money have the same problems that I do. Maybe there is hope for me!

There are many ideas in this book that will help traders and managers. Everything from developing a vision, planning a strategy, to the section on fears, emotions, and overcoming obstacles. I think Kiev is more of a coach than a psychologist in this book. He does not say "Ok, I validate your fears, its ok to be a loser", he comes out and tells some of these managers they are being weak and should change their risk levels and profit targets if they want to run big money. It makes sense in the context of the conversations.

With the loss of 5 billion by Aramanth this week, maybe they should have read this book last week. Now just getting bigger is not going to help many managers. Kiev only pushes some of these managers to trade larger on the positions they have extreme confidence in. Confidence levels that they have a track record of in previous trades. After all, if your goal is to be one of the best, you cannot stay in your comfort zone.

Suspicious Reviews.......2006-04-26

'Sceptic' (See March 2nd review below) is right - the author has conjured up a slew of similar 5 star reviews from family, friends and SAC office co-workers. His ego knows no bounds.

If you have his first two books you would be wasting your money to get this one. And it would be nice to expect better of an author on subjects of peak performance than to pad reviews. Sorry, Ari.

Confoundedly disappointing! .......2006-03-27

I had expected something of the genre and quality of Market Wizards I & II, Trading for a living, Trade like a Hedge Fund (by James Altucher), Soros on Soros, Reminiscences of a stock operator, Running Money by Andy Kessler etc etc. I had been confoundedly disappointed. The book is flooded of interviews with hedge fund managers anonymous leading you to nowhere but setting goals, visualizing success, overcoming fears and all the stuff you find in any trading psychology book, only that the writing skill of the author is sub-standard. The author had repeated the term "Hedge Fund" highly frequently. However, the content is not related particularly to any hedge fund or hedge fund manager at all. Also, the author had elaborated the term "mastery" throughout the book. I assure you that you will have no idea of how to achieve it unless you employ the author as your personal trading counsellor.

In short, a waste of time, money and the paper to print the book.

Wisdom from the best.......2005-09-22

The psychological dimension of investing is one of the most important yet least discussed. Dr. Ari Kiev has filled that gap! He does a great job and I now understand why he is the pre-eminent trading coach. Hedge Fund Masters both inspires you to achieve break-through performance and provides the specific tools to do so. I found it particularly valuable that he combines his conceptual framework with actual interviews of top traders that are applying it daily. I am a Managing Director and Portfolio Manager at a large hedge fund and have referenced this book more than any other so far this year. I highly recommend this great read if you are serious about investment mastery.

Rubin Cartert, the true story - it's not enough to see the movie.......2005-12-20

If you have seen "The Hurricane" motion picture, starring Denzel Washington (an amazing peformance), surely you'd think that you know everything there is to know about Rubin Carter. Unfortunately, that's incorrect. Furthermore, it's not even close.
Don't get me wrong - the motion picture is fantastic and it surely includes all the important details, but regardless to what kind of movie it is - you should know, and I can tell you that for sure because I read this book, that there are A LOT of details that aren't mentioned in the movie.
If you want to know the whole story I must implore you to take a long look at that book. But I should also tell you that there's a downside: The book can make you read even five pages in a row without any important or interesting thing coming up; it can also make your patience burst if you're expecting something to happen but it takes long pages, sometimes not even discribed so interestingly.
Bottom line: if Rubin Carter and his amazing story interests you - I would suggest you read this book. It will make you see the big picture about this man.

A True Account.......2005-11-24

I bought this book my sophomore year of high school and that was over 7 years ago. It has literally been my bible to life. Rubin and his book have changed my life more than anything else I have ever encountered. Too often than not we find false heroes in this world. People like Paris Hilton who some look up to as a hero or a role model, but the true heroes in this life are often over looked or never seen at all. Rubin Carter is a true hero, I have never even heard of such a troubled life an to come out on top both a champion of his sport and one in life. A wise man told me once that it is now how we live this life but what we do during it. If your looking for a uplifting book of a true hero an a book that will give you strength when all doubt you, this is the one.

Brilliant and Touching.......2004-05-04

Obviously no one can write his story better than Rubin himself. This story is both and inspiring story of a man who has never stopped fighting and a terrifying reality check into the American judicial system. This book is filled with an anger that is only kept in check by the author's own love and compassion.

The reader whould of course keep in mind this is an autobiography and therefore is skewed to the writer's point of view and emotional state.

I purchased this book, after viewing the much celebrated movie, "The Hurricane." The book is mediocre. I found it difficult to believe much of the writer's exaggerated boasting regarding his many talents. I had erroneously gathered from the movie, that this was a self-effacing, self-made man, not so. The reader is ever searching for the "real meat" of the story, however, the bulk of the story is about the author as a "ghetto-bad boy." The last few chapters of the book are short and quickly race you through the actual murder and trial. Overall it is not well written and disappointing.

A touching story inspires child........2002-12-13

This story reached out and touched the lives of many people. It also made people realize not to be racist. I know that I used to be racist and this turned my life around. The fact that rubin was in jail for a crime he didnt commit just because he wasnt white isnt at all fair. His story inspired me not to be racist and to get others not to hate the non-white. It has touched many lives and i like that. I am one of Rubin's biggest fans.

What this publication seeks to do is inform the reader of the Typical arms and armour of the period, how they were used, who made them, what they look like and what are their distintive features. the text is supported by a wide variety of photographs ,many black and white and 8 color,Buff coats patterns, Firearms Lock Types, Leather Guns, Cuirassier Armour, Harquebus Armour, Swords, Cavalry Firearms, Pikeman's Armour, for the Scottish Weapon Fans I have to say that they were omitted.

This is the first book I bought from the Royal Armouries, fascinating to anyone interested in weapons and equipment of the 17th century Arms and Armour of the ECW armies. the book is only 99 pages but very concise, a very worthwhile volume to add to your library, an absolute must for all English Civil War enthusiasts, armour fans or weapons of the period.

Donald Kettl's thin but rich book, "System under Stress," examines homeland security and American politics. He begins by observing that most of us tend to think that things will be in the future as they were in the past, that the political system behaves in predictable ways. However, he goes on, shocks to the system raise intriguing and powerful questions. Specifically, how have the events of 9/11 affected American politics and governance?

He raises a series of key questions, such as: "But what happens to that system when a major shock shakes its foundations? What can such a profound upheaval tell us about the system's ability to respond? How does it help define the core truths and enduring principles that lie at the heart of American government? And how can we evaluate the system's response to better understand how it can adapt to the diverse challenges we are likely to face in the future?"

This volume explores a number of issues emerging from a consideration of such questions. What systemic failures led to the successful and devastating attacks on 9/11? What kind of coordination problems across government agencies need to be addressed/ What about the roles of state and local governments?
