5 out of 5 stars The Sequential Master Comes Full Cycle.......2004-08-12

Since his creation of THE SPIRIT and his partner Ebony
White over 60 years ago, the fame and influence
of Sequential Master Will Eisner and his inspired
urban fable has frequently been accompanied by the
ongoing debate over the nature of THE SPIRIT's
gregarious sidekick. Is Ebony a blatent
stereotype, or is the durable, likeable
mug an African American maverick hampered
      by -and prevailing despite- the
      distortions of 1940s racial imagery?
It's an engaging question which has
lost none of its zeal over the decades.

While pondering upon this question about
the past, consider the overall worth of
all Eisner continues to bring to all literary
      arenas, Sequential and otherwise. His
      comprehensive storytelling genius sharper
than ever, he has recently embarked upon
      the distillation of classic literature
      into Comic page storybooks
      for young people.
Not content with giving the old CLASSICS
ILLUSTRATED a stylistic run for its money,
Eisner has broken further ground in
interpreting one of the most revered of
all African folktales, the legend of the
      Lion of Mali, SUNDIATA.

A fine way of introducing young and old
alike to this magnificent tale, this
graphic album is both signature piece
and significant milestone in a long,
      distinguished career. A profound tale
      of resilience, ingenuity, and fortitude
      overcoming all obstacles, SUNDIATA is
      both earthy and graceful, carrying
      great subtlety while rolling with
      flamboyance. In Eisner's hands, the
saga of the cripple who rises up to
      oppose an envious sorceror's murderous
tyranny is imparted with deep dignity,
and a winning respect to interest all
      ages from all persuasions.

      Over 60 years and
      still running it
      strong.

      Will Eisner.
      SUNDIATA.

      4 out of 5 stars Repent, Harlan.......2006-06-26

This is a fascinating piece of detective work - probably not of great interest to the average book reader, but a wonderful revelation to people like myself, who have long wondered what happened to the book we awaited eagerly over 30 years ago.
It was a time when Harlan Ellison seemed to be both a great story writer and a great editor.
Little did we know that his third anthology would sit on the edge of forever.
I have read a number of speculations on the non-appearance of The Last Dangerous Visions, but at last here is one that makes complete sense.
      Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The facts of the case..........2005-09-23

This is a very specialized non-fiction book (booklet? pamphlet? it is very short) dealing with the sad history of the much awaited but never realized publication of The Last Dangerous Visions anthology by Harlan Ellison. The author, Christopher Priest, did his research, cited all of his sources, and pretty much just relates the facts of what Ellison has said and when he said it verses what he has actually done.

The biggest fact one can add to this book is that it is now 2005, over thirty years after the project began and eight years since Priest wrote his history/analysis of its non-occurence, and LDV _still_ has not come out nor shown any sign of ever coming out. And with each passing year, the stories age even further and, except for the handful of authors who took their stories back and had them published elsewhere, more of the included authors pass on with their stories unseen and unread in their lifetime.

Some of the other reviewers who have castigated Priest apparently didn't bother to do their research. One implies that Priest is being vindictive because his own story was rejected for LDV, which is not true (that was a completely different author, John Shirley). Another reveals his ignorance of Priest's publishing history, accusing him of riding the coattails of an American comic book author of the same name, when in fact the British author Priest has been around longer, pubished more and in fact has the real claim to the name since the comic book author apparently changed his name.

This book is interesting and invaluable if you're at all curious about this much talked-about but never seen anthology. Harlan Ellison is one of the truly great writers of speculative fiction and has earned his place of honor in its history. But even great men have their foibles and failures, and sadly LDV looks to be his.

      1 out of 5 stars By Another Man's Bootstraps.......2004-07-21

First, it should be said that if you discovered this jumped-up fan tirade to be linked in any way to REAL books by award winning writer Harlan Ellison you have been led astray. But since the link to Harlan's work and Priest's is probably established by Priest and his associates pressing on this link repeatedly in their free time you will have this.

An unsuspecting reader should also know that when pressing the name Christopher Priest one is presented with links to a number of comic book TPB's by a different Christpher Priest. Here we have an example of a person achieving marginal notice by riding on the coat tails of not one, but TWO different (and far better) writers.

If you enjoy long winded and meanspirited tirades that bleat on for pages about slights and literary misdemeanors that could be covered in a few sentences - this is the screed you've been waiting for. If, on the other hand you'd like to read a good book - fiction or non-fiction - in just about any genre imaginable - try one of the 70 or so books Harlan has published in the last 45 years.

This book is published in the United States by Fantagraphics. This is appropriate as Fantagraphics also publishes the Eros line of XXX rated comics in order to stay afloat these days. Fans of self-abuse will be right at home with this title or any of the other books in the one-fisted Fantagraphics catalog.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful Little Book........2003-07-09

Really, I still think that after reading this essay it's a great loss that The Last Dangerous Visions never saw the light of day. Up to now, I mean. I hope it will be put together one day but chances seem small.

Anyway, The Book on the Edge of Forever provides plenty of information, though a sad feeling may overcome you while reading it.

Thank you, Christopher Priest, for this book.

      1 out of 5 stars One-sided hatchet job by two self-described "Enemies"..........2002-10-29

Priest's contribution to TLDV was rejected 30 years ago by Harlan Ellison, and this one-sided hatchet job, published by another of Ellison's personal antagonists, Gary Groth, is the result. The fact that these two individuals went so far as to actually refer to themselves as the "Enemies of Ellison" (later "Victims of Ellison" but still something right out of elementary school) speaks volumes about both writer and publisher. It is ad hominem masquerading as journalism, and wasn't worth reading as a free download, let alone paying ... for it.

If you want to be entertained, read the many many volumes of Harlan Ellison's stories and essays. If you want to know more about Ellison himself, there are far better and more objective biographies and critiques of the man and his work.

For those previous reviewers who mentioned Stephen King's "lost story," consider this: It doesn't seem to have bothered King, who has gone on to have some modest success as a writer. Priest, OTOH, has built his entire ... career by attaching himself to Harlan's ankle like an angry Yorkie.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Subject Matter.......2006-03-18

Not all inclusive but this book has some interesting stories that I havent seen before. It's not the usual horror stuff that tries to talk about the themes or hidden meanings. This book is fun because it goes into the making of the movie. Some good coverage of Twilight Zone the movie, the Crow and the rare Bette Davis flick Wicked Stepmother. It also covers the usual making of big flicks like Exorcist, Jaws and Psycho, but it's the rare ones that make the book a treat. Small publisher so there's not a lot of money put into the printing. Quality is ok. Some nice pics, some typos, but overall an interesting read. I recommend if you like back story stuff around hollywood flicks.

2 out of 5 stars too many typos........2005-09-08

The book was kind of interesting. The first few stories "The Crow" and "Twilight Zone, The Movie," were definitely eerie and gruesome. Loaded with details I didn't previous know. But for a book with the title Reel 'Horror', some of the stories were just plain boring. I thought the book was about actual deaths that took place during the filming of various movies. Only the first few movies were about mysterious or nasty deaths. The rest were just stories of production woes. Poltergeist did have deaths, but none occurring on set. Who cares about the production problems on Bette Davis' last film? It doesn't qualify as 'horror' in any way (although the director and producers probably disagree). The Jaws story wasn't terrifying at all. What was it doing in the book? And I couldn't get past the various typos throughout the book. There are at least 5 on every page. Some mistakes are too grievous to be overlooked. The author refers repeatedly to the director of Poltergeist as Tobe Cooper! (it's Hooper!!). Out of sheer curiosity, I looked up the cinematographer named on the Bette Davis story, and couldn't find his name in the database. His name is also not the name listed on the official credit of cinematographer who worked on the film. Hmmm...I simply had to check references after the Hooper incident! It makes me wonder about the credibility of the authors' references. While there may be an explanation for certain questions (perhaps the cinematographer quit halfway through production and was replaced?), I can't believe they mispelled a directors' name....Not very interesting. I'd try a different title than this for some real 'reel horror'.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating but cheaply made book.......2005-06-11

Not to be confused by Reel Terror, a book containing the stories that influenced several sc-fi and horror movies. This book focuses on the tragic real life events surrounding some recognizable movies.

Be warned, the book is cheaply made and is 8.5 x 11, not a standard paperback size as I was expecting. For the price, I would recommend trying to find it at your local library over purchasing. But a good read, nonetheless.

What Mr. Harris accomplished in this series is phenomenal. This is an ultimate and indispensable guide to 3-cushion players. All four books of this series are full of precious formulas and tips many of which have been secret to amateurs. Systematic and pin-pointed explanations and diagrams are incredible.

5 out of 5 stars River City Miracle.......1998-12-13

In Wichita, I selfishly organized these locals recently using Bondzinsky's ladder club concept so that they could see their averages and have their hearts on improvement. It worked too. There are 14 players. In one month they've played over 100 games and the housemen are cleaning the table everyday. Without 4 pounds of chalk, they play longer and rather well. Then, I make available the Atlas books for those that stand still long enough to read a select page or two. Most will. Those of us that rely on the books and our working our way through them (one new thing at a time) "call our shots" to each other, so we can compare and discuss the many approaches. It's a minor miracle, right here in River City. One guy will say, "Rising Sun," another offers, "Dead Ball here", "Sid", "Walt's," "Sang Lee," "Plus," all those familiar names in the books. Here's the punchline: "these writings have given even Wichita a body of information that is improving play and interest in the game...not just for students and 3 cushion fanatics, like me, but for the newcomers and converted pool players in town. The way these books play a part in the improvement of the game is probably greater than Walt will ever know."

5 out of 5 stars Legally change his name to Santa Claus.......1998-12-13

All year long Walt Harris should wear a red cap and a long white beard . And have his name legally changed to SANTA CLAUS (to Room Billiard Players). I had my 1926 Bruns. table re done recently; and I just finished practicing third rail arrivals, with the West Chicago Long Angle. Wow, what a pleasure to see shot after shot right on the money!! A real Christmas present to me and a pleasure to look forward to all year long. Perhaps I'll send him a reindeer or two.

        Book Description

There now exists a wealth of tools and techniques that can determine if and how a Web site is providing business value to its owners. This book is a survey of those metrics and is as important to IT executives as it is to marketing professionals.

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars It is out-of-date and unorganized........2006-11-05

The tone of this book is pretty coversational but unorganized. The information in this book is pretty much out of date. For example, this book still talk a lot of banner ad which is almost out of the scope in today's ad on web, while talking little or nothing about PPC. It brings out some good old metric but nothing new. The technolgy foundation of this book is old and weak and can not reflect and keep up with the current trends.

This book is not efficient in pointing out things. It could be more condensed. I don't think this is neccessary to tell the whole author's personal story and some other trivial things to explain things. YOu would just need to point out the definition, and how to apply it, and how to interepte it and etc.

This book just includes a lot of unncessary personal story and waste reader's time. If you need a book which is right to the point and nothing more, this book is not right for you.

1 out of 5 stars Out of date .... not useful anymore.......2006-09-27

this books needs two things desparately:

        a) A new edition: the last edition was in 2002 - things have changed quite a lot since then, and

        b) More details on the technologies than interviews with one and sundry - books that just present interviews on who accomplished what are "let me feel nice about this technology" kind as opposed to "how do I really understand and implement this technology"

        4 out of 5 stars It's very practical.......2006-09-19

It's a very practical, very well informed book. The author quoted
        thousands of reports.

4 out of 5 stars Useful at large but confusing here and there.......2006-07-11

Even four years after its publishing date, I've found Sterne's book on Web Metrics helpful. For the most part, he's focused on business metrics applied to the web, which shields his work from obsolescence for the most part. However, when he gets into topics such as CRM and also in other places throughout the book, it feels as if he could have used a bit more editing, as he rambles and jumps between topics in a way that is more confusing than helpful. It deserves four stars, loosing one star over his occasional rambling.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just For Corporations and Marketing Departments.......2005-01-25

Whether you're a small business owner, a corporate manager, or
someone just starting a business venture, Web Metrics is a must-
read. For small and new business entrepreneurs who cannot afford a marketing department, Web Metrics gives an inside look into how

        Book Description

Welcome to the childhood of Catherine McClure Gildiner. It is the mid-1950s in Lewiston, New York, a sleepy town near Niagara Falls. Divorce is unheard of, mothers wear high heels to the beauty salon, and television has only just arrived.

At the tender age of four, Cathy accompanies Roy, the deliveryman at her father's pharmacy, on his routes. She shares some of their memorable deliveries-sleeping pills to Marilyn Monroe (in town filming Niagara), sedatives to Mad Bear, a violent Tuscarora chief, and fungus cream to Warty, the gentle operator of the town dump. As she reaches her teenage years,

Cathy's irrepressible spirit spurs her from dangerous sled rides that take her "too close to the Falls" to tipsy dances with the town priest.

"Anyone who appreciates a good story, well told, will find it in Too Close to the Falls." (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

"Gildiner beautifully portrays her outrageous youth through the innocent, yet sometimes frighteningly worldly eyes of a child." (The Quill & Quire)

5 out of 5 stars I read a different edition than the paperback pictured.........2007-08-30

I really liked this memoir..and I wish the author would continue where she left off. It ends well in this memoir but I was really sorry when it did end. I felt like I was experiencing the life of the author as a young girl into early adulthood--with all her adventures!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Hilarious, Can't put it down!.......2007-05-05

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and my only complaint is that it ended too soon. I am hoping that there will be a sequel. This is an unconventional memoir, a very unusual childhood and just so funny and also deeply moving, I couldn't put it down! Everyone I know who has read it loves it. This book will take you through every emotion. If you hate to cook, know a gifted child or were one yourself, had a Catholic school education, this book will be particularly amusing. Worth the read and make sure to pass it along to a friend or two!

5 out of 5 stars Too Close to the Falls.......2007-03-09

I just loved this book. I don't have any idea how she was able to write this book through the eyes of a child. I live very close to Niagara Falls and could readily relate to all of the places in this book. Highly recommend this, you won't be sorry!

        5 out of 5 stars What a great read!.......2007-01-22

When I first heard about this book, I was really looking forward to reading it as I grew up in Lewiston in the 60's. I knew some of the people she mentions in the book as well as went to the same schools. Ms. Gildner's writting captures the delightful nature of Lewiston and I could actually visualize the places she was describing. Her atypical mother sounded a bit like mine with the Bridge club and a housekeeper. Despite the emotional connection to the setting of the book, I throughly enjoyed the story of the author's life and was sad to finnish the book. It is not often that I laugh out loud when I am reading a book, but this one had me laughing so hard at times that I was falling out of my chair.

        5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-01-14

This book should be on the required reading list for every high school student. The minute I began reading I quickly fell into the world of Catherine McClure and I was sad that I finished it.

              5 out of 5 stars Book Description.......2001-02-07

Battery B served throughout the war in the Second Corps. The outfit saw its first action at Ball's Bluff. From there, the battery eventually accompanied the Union army to the Peninsula and was engaged at Fair Oaks, Savage Station, Glendale and Malvern Hill. Next, the battery fought at Antietam, and then, at Fredericksburg, the outfit followed the infantry in close support in front of Marye's Heights. At Gettysburg, the battery was part of the artillery that held Cemetery Hill. The intensity of the action in the battery's front can be noted by the fact that one Confederate cannon ball struck and lodged in the muzzle of one of the Rhode Islander's guns. After Gettysburg, the battery continued to serve with distinction at Mine Run, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and the siege of Petersburg.

4 out of 5 stars Good but outdated.......2006-06-22

This book is does an OK job describing activities for kids, but it is VERY outdated. Israel is changing rapidly and this book is in need of a new revised edition. It lists places like the Dolphinarium as a place to take kids. The Dolphinarium was turned in to a disco years ago.

You can use this book for some ideas, but double check everything before you go, the activity may no longer be there.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for parents taking their children to Israel.......1999-10-28

We used this book every day of our 2 week trip to Israel with 3 children aged 1-8. Our friends then borrowed the book for a 3 week trip with 5 children aged 6-16. The sections of the book are broken down by geography, with handy maps to assist you in setting up your schedule, whether your hotel is in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Tiberias or Eilat. The greatest benefits of the book include the phone numbers of the tourist sites as well as the hours which each location is open. The author even recommends ideal hotels and activities based on your children's ages.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book to help plan your Israel travel........1998-09-28

Whether you have children or not, this book will help you plan your Israel travel. It lists many attractions, tourist sites, museums, national parks, etc., including hours of operation, phone and fax numbers, and whether there is a fee. As a professional travel planner specializing in Israel travel, I highly recommend this book to all my clients, even those traveling without children!
