5 out of 5 stars From zero to 60's.......2002-06-26

This is a definitive look at the 60's culture in Europe, centering on France. Written in French, but lavishly illustrated, this book launched D'Anne Bony's series of decade design books. It is an invaluable resource tool and a pleasure to just thumb through. I purchased my copy in 1983, and it was poorly bound. Later editions have solved this problem

4 out of 5 stars Indispensable info for fashion retailers.......2004-12-27

If you deal in women's fashion, this is a necessary reference book. (Hint: It's so important, when I lost mine, I came right here to buy another!) The information on 20th century fashion leaders is especially necessary for antique dealers, vintage clothing shops, and of course womenswear consignment shops. I recommend this book to my readers in the resale industry on my web site, www.tgtbt.com .

      5 out of 5 stars St.James Fashion Encyclopedia: A survey of style.......2001-03-08

Not a day goes by that I don't pick up this book! An excellent collection of concise 20th century fashion designer's biographies. Interesting and acurate information arranged in alphabetical order. The information is so good that you forgive the book for not having photographs. Most of our students use the book for research on their favorite designers but, this book is also just a great read.

            Book Description

Reflecting the growing interest in popular music from the developing world, this unique book is the first to examine all major non-Western urban music styles, from increasingly familiar genres like reggae and salsa, to the lesser-known regional styles of Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, non-Western Europe (Greece, Yugoslavia, Portugal), Asia, and the Near East. Manuel establishes parameters that distinguish popular music from both folk and classical music, defining popular music as music created with the mass media in mind and reproduced on a large scale basis as a salable commodity for wide public consumption. While emphasizing stylistic analysis and historical development, he also treats the diverse popular musics as sites for the negotiation and mediation of the dialectics of nationalism and acculturation, tradition and modernity, urban and rural aesthetics, and grassroots spontaneity and corporate or bureaucratic manipulation. With its encyclopedic syntheses of earlier studies and extensive original research, Manuel's book will be an invaluable source for general readers and students of ethnology, popular music, and contemporary culture.

2 out of 5 stars An introduction to Omaha only..........2006-04-27

This book assumes you are coming from hold'em and does a good job of showing the difference between hold'em and Omaha hi-lo. It shows you winning high and low Omaha hands by showing you different card combinations. It does a good job of showing you how to figure out the outs you have, and generally what to look for in starting hands without being specific. What it doesn't cover is the play of the hand. The book uses big font and has a lot of card graphics that take up space. The two chapters at the end are filler on tournament play in general that applies to both Omaha and hold'em, and internet poker. Then there is a glossary, and several pages of advertisement for other books.

                2 out of 5 stars Worth a scan at the bookstore - that's all.......2005-09-07

OK book for reading hands but not really much after that.

It has a large number of examples of hands and a very good section on comparing Omaha Hi'Lo (LO8) to Hold'm. this is not really a BOOK but more a group of pages with lists.

It also covers Pot Limit and sort of confuses the two at times.

3 out of 5 stars Good intro, but lacking meat..........2004-07-14

Although the title is a bit misleading, this book is a good intro to Omaha. I would have given it 4 stars, but I feel the title is a bit misplaced... Better would something like 'Introduction to Omaha'.

That being said, I think that the author does a good job of trying to hammer home the differences between Hold'em (where most players are coming from) and Omaha. He does a great job of providing dozens of examples of reading the board in relation to hand - a topic that can be very confusing, especially in the beginning.

What this book lacks however, is more meat on post flop play. Also, some firmer numbers on how Omaha can be more profitable than Hold'em. He talks about how the pots are bigger, but also how high/low and low splits can eat into your win rate. Additionally, he makes some strong aurguments for why 'better' players will not have as much of an edge in Omaha, but doesn't really get into how to be a 'winner' beyond the topic of starting hand selection.

All and all, I think that this book used in conjunction with one of the other books out there that are lacking some of this fundamentals would deffinately lead to a solid start in Omaha.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Quality I Expected.......2004-06-16

Man, having been pleasantly surprised by the amount of useful material that was in Ken Warren's first two Hold'em books, I was extremely surprised by how little he packed into this book about Omaha. I think it was ridiculous having so many pages devoted to reading both hi and lo hands. The examples took up so much space, no wonder he was able to get so many pages out of so little material. He had very little advice on what specific hands to select, how to play pre-flop, how to play post-flop, not to mention very little on play at the turn and after the river. I really enjoyed his second book on hold'em, but I want to warn anyone that is thinking about getting this book not to expect very much out of it. I really wish he had used the same format as his previous book, with assignments at the end of each chapter to apply what you have learned, but he did not.

3 out of 5 stars Good intro Omaha book.......2004-01-14

I've been playing Omaha for the better part of two years now and am constantly on the lookout for new books on the subject (of which there are very few right now relative to the volume of hold'em books). When I ran across the "Winner's Guide" I immediately picked it up.

The book is basically divided into two parts - a very basic, introductory part, and the rest of the book which is a little more in depth. The first half of the book will be very useful to poker players who are new to Omaha or wish to try Omaha the next time the hold'em list at the casino is 40 people deep. The first half covers the very basics of Omaha - how it is different from hold'em, how it is not different from hold'em, what is a good starting hand in Omaha, and of course how do you read an Omaha board - particularly the low (i.e., what is the nuts?).

The second half of the book will be somewhat useful for more serious Omaha players and goes into more depth about Omaha strategy - when to try and draw out a low, when to pre-flop raise, when not to raise on the low, etc. However, if you are a player who already understands the basics of Omaha play and are looking for something a little more advanced, go with the Zee book on hi/lo poker (Omaha and 7 stud).

So the upshot of this review: a good intro to Omaha, but not all that useful to the experienced player.

                        Book Description

Henry Ford, a major architect of modern America, has lived on in the imagination of his fellow citizens as an enduring figure of fascination, an inimitable individual, a controversial personality, and a social visionary from the moment his Model T brought the automobile to the masses and triggered the consumer revolution. But never before has his outsized genius been brought to life so vividly as by Steven Watts in this major new biography. Watts, the author of the much acclaimed The Magic Kingdom: Walt Disney and the American Way of Life, has produced a superbly researched study of a man who was a bundle of contradictions.

Ford was the entrepreneur who first made the automobile affordable but who grew skeptical of consumerism’s corrosive impact on moral values, an employer who insisted on a living wage for his workers but stridently opposed unions, who established the assembly line but worried about its effect on the work ethic, who welcomed African Americans to his company in the age of Jim Crow but was a rabid anti-Semite. He was the private man who had a warm, loving marriage while siring a son with a mistress; a father who drove his heir, Edsel, so relentlessly that it contributed to his early death; a folksy social philosopher and at one time, perhaps, the most popular figure in America, who treated his workers so harshly that they turned against him; creator of the largest, most sophisticated factory in the world who preferred spending time in his elaborate re-creation of a nineteenth-century village; and the greatest businessman of his age who haplessly lost control of his own company in his declining years.

Watts poignantly shows us how a Michigan farm boy from modest circumstances emerged as one of America’s richest men and one of its first mass-culture celebrities, one who became a folk hero to millions of ordinary citizens because of his support of high wages and material abundance for everyday workers and yet also excited the admiration of figures as diverse as Vladimir Lenin and Adolf Hitler, John D. Rockefeller and Woodrow Wilson.

Disclosing the man behind the myth and situating his achievements and controversies firmly within the context of early twentieth-century America, Watts has given us a comprehensive, illuminating biography of an American icon.

2 out of 5 stars Opinionated and Verbose.......2007-07-08

While the facts are presented in a more or less historical fashion (Watts jumps from one year to the next and then back again with dizzying speed) the author continually and exhaustively repeats himself. He resorts to quoting newspapers of the day (make that ALL of the newspapers of the day) to reinforce his already over-stated and rambling views. In fact, one wonders how much of this book was actually written by the author. Three out of four paragraphs on every page are nothing more than quotes from newspaper articles. The title of the book should be something along the line of, "Henry Ford -- According to the Newspapers -- With a Smattering of Left Wing Collegiate Opinion Thrown-In for Good Measure."
A long-winded, anti-corporate, pro-Marxist-Unionist perspective by a college professor obviously hoping for PBS to turn this voluminous sleeping pill into an equally borish mini-series.

5 out of 5 stars Henry Ford - In All His Facets.......2007-06-08

Henry Ford occupied many of the world's stages during his lifetime. Steven Watts does a superb job of examining all of Ford's facets - a chapter at a time - which allows the reader an opportunity to glimpse a complicated man in all his dimensions.

A great read. I have given this book away to my friends to read also.

                        5 out of 5 stars Multifaceted, extraordinary, eye-opening, enjoyable.......2006-11-21

Steven Watts' biography is much more than the life story of Henry Ford. Watts artfully weaves the story of the early 20th century in America with the emergence of Henry Ford. Early in the book Watts poses the question "Did Ford create the phenomenon of consumerism or did the onset of consumerism create the phenomenon of Henry Ford?" Although Watts never answers this rhetorical question, he provides exactly enough insight into both the times in early 20th century America and Henry Ford to help us debate the issue for a long time. An excellent read that seems to get better even months after the book is read.

                        5 out of 5 stars Insightful Biography.......2006-05-09

The People's Tycoon is an insightful and well-balanced biography of Henry Ford, the man who helped usher in the new mass consumer society along with the concept of mass production which produced his famed Model T. This car became a symbol of the ordinary person's ability to partake in this new era of plenty and opportunity. Henry Ford, a leader of this vision, is presented with both his accomplishments as well as the contradictions behind the man and the changes he wrought as well as some of his darker qualities. Watts succeeds fairly well in presenting Ford as the people's tycoon.

Henry Ford's early business ventures in the rising automobile industry were unsuccessful, but Ford had a knack for taking the pulse of the American people and learning how to exploit the benefits of grabbing headlines and advertising, an example being his early interest in automobile racing. But Ford's populist streak led to a vision that became central to the man and his life's work; that vision was producing an affordable car that could be purchased by the average American. This also led to the concept of mass production, which would help lower the cost for the consumer.

Of course this wasn't the product of one man, many people played important roles in the success of the Ford Motor Company. That's another strength of this book in that we get to see who some of these players were in this rising business. Ford seemed to have a genuine appreciation of ordinary people as he disdained the elite, both in the financial and academic sense, and this concern for the worker seemed to be exhibited when he implemented the new $5 dollar workday for employees. His company was also the sponsor of a sociological department that helped steer employees into better habits of learning how to spend their money wisely and even in how to live better lives. This in some ways had noble qualities, but also had the tendency to become too intrusive.

The success of the Ford vision and its results with the Model T can not be denied, but you can't help but notice the contradictions in what Ford believed in and how his work was changing the rural landscape he so loved. America was changing rapidly from an agricultural and rural society to an urban culture driven by a desire for better opportunities, greater material wealth and other general changes in the"old values". By Ford's late career, he was evincing this nostalgia for the past with the creation of the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, where various aspects of America's past he considered important were collected and opened to the public, all in the face of major cultural changes his company was partly responsible for.

Ford wanted to help the ordinary American, and Watts's presentation makes him out to be a true Populist. Ford also displayed an inherent nativism in the face of major global changes during both World War I and World War II. His attempt to settle the First World War with his Peace Ship was perhaps so naive as to border on the absurd. As Watts mentioned, Ford wasn't the academic type, rather he acted from instinct and intuition. Ford could be both visionary and backwards. His ideas (and some quite out there) and views on many topics are at least mentioned to some degree on varied topics including agriculture, war, education, FDR and the New Deal, reincarnation, dieting and more.

Ford possessed traits that made him less respectable. For all his belief in the ordinary American, his nativist streak revealed deep and abiding prejudice against Jews, which he associated with the same Wall Street financiers he so loathed. The use of his own newspaper, the Dearborn Independent, got him into a lot of trouble with his views on the Jewish people. The disputes with labor which led to a bloody confrontation known as the battle of the overpass was a major blot on Ford's reputation. Ford's own business habits of pitting influential men in his company against others and his use of Harry Bennett and his thugs was less than admirable. Perhaps most regrettable was his treatment of his son Edsel, who had taken over the presidency of the company, but in name only.

Edsel's decisions were being constantly obstructed by his father. Edsel bore all this with a resigned acceptance, never forcefully confronting his father. Henry Ford doesn't come off looking good at all in this episode, and nor should he. Edsel died in 1943, and as Watts stated, Ford lost a part of himself after this tragic event. Henry Ford probably realized that his own actions had contributed to Edsel's death. The last years of this former titan in American industry and American culture are indeed quite sad to read about.

I've left out a lot, but this is an unusually well written and good, balanced view of Ford the man, what he accomplished in his field and how he played a role in the changing nature of American society. Personally, I would have liked to have known a little more about some of the ordinary workers of the Ford Motor Company and their thoughts on their employer. Ford is portrayed as a folk hero for many average Americans. Watts continually evokes his actions and beliefs in the Populist mold. But Ford's many different facets are given rightful attention that will make you both acknowledge his achievements, yet loathe some of his other qualities. A good book.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough biography of complex, confounding Henry Ford.......2005-11-29

Henry Ford did not invent the automobile, but he invented something bigger - twentieth century America. It is no exaggeration to say that without Ford's system of production, without his understanding of the mass market, without his Model T, that century would have been a very different phenomenon. Ford epitomized the contradictions, complexities and confusion of that America. Self-taught and utterly confident in what he knew, he despised what he did not know. A radical who created an industrial cornucopia for workers by introducing the five-dollar daily wage, he was an industrial tyrant who hired organized criminal gangs to intimidate labor union organizers. We strongly recommend this thorough biography. Author Steven Watts offers a new way of looking at the facts, and at Ford - and does so with engaging style.

This fourteenth installment in the WARMACHINES series is the third of the special 24 page mini-files which utilizes the comparatively few available photographs to document a worthy subject, in this case the 1/4 ton M151 Mutt. This book benefits the reader by providing detailed color photographs of the Mutt in field conditions, from the barracks parking lot, to deplaning from a C-130 Hercules, to undergoing an engine change, to serving with the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces). Many details are revealed in the photographs, including engine, radios, batteries, hard-top kits, soft tops, trailers, and more. This book is extremely useful to scale modelers wishing to improve the Tamiya and Academy kits, as well as to military enthusiasts.

There are many good photos for references. It's a short booklet (24 pages) so it's by no means an expansive historical narative. The vast majority of the photos seem to come from US Army European (go figure - Verlinden/Germany) but there are some references to other branches and uses as well that make this one a must for the MUTT fan.

This book has no new photos, very weak descriptions of the M151 and it's variations. If you are a modeler interested in the IDF you might find the book of use in detailing models.

                                Book Description

From a diverse team of writers whose expertise spans law enforcement and cross-cultural relations, comes a book with comprehensive coverage of sensitive topics and issues related to diversity and multiculturalism facing police today and in the 21st century. It contains insightful as well as practical information and guidelines on how law enforcement professionals can work effectively with diverse cultural groups, both inside their organizations as well as in the community. Focusing on the cross-cultural and racial contact that police officers and civilian employees have with citizens, victims, suspects, and co-workers from diverse backgrounds, this book contains information on racial profiling, hate crimes, community-based policing, undocumented immigrants and immigrant women, urban dynamics, and gays and lesbians in law enforcement. For law enforcement managers, supervisors, officers, and instructors.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE FOR ANY CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROFESSIONAL (Police Tactical & Cultural Diversity Trainer).......2007-09-29

"Multicultural Law Enforcement - Strategies for Peacekeeping in a Diverse Society" (Fourth Edition) is an absolute must-have for any police academy, corrections, or college law enforcement program. No other textbook covers such a wide range of topics in such depth concerning how criminal justice professionals are affected by diversity in the society and workforce. As a law enforcement officer with experience ranging from major metropolitan street patrol to Captain in charge of training, I have traveled extensively throughout the West Coast providing training to correctional and law enforcement officers in cultural diversity as well as arrest and control tactics, self-defense, and gun and baton retention. It is my professional opinion that this extraordinary volume will not replace, but instead will complement, the training necessary for street survival tactics, and that professionals who are trained with MULTICULTURAL LAW ENFORCEMENT (MLE) will be more likely to avoid resorting to the use of force. As presented in MLE-4, law enforcement professionals can better understand issues of respect and avoid perceived disrespect due to a lack of cultural awareness. Increased awareness often causes involved parties to be more cooperative and/or exhibit less resistance.

MLE is superior to other materials used in "sensitivity training" in the profession, in several respects. It provides "cultural diversity training" rather than "sensitivity" training, which has been shown to be counter-productive in military and paramilitary training, according to two Pentagon Reports. Each edition of MLE has addressed "hot-button" issues and made recommendations that would surely have prevented unnecessary lawsuits if only more officers had been trained with this text.

On September 19, 2007, the headline of the Los Angeles Independent read: "Jury Award Stands: An LAFD firefighter will receive $6.2 million after winning a harassment case." - These types of payouts that occur each year are specifically due to the type of ignorance of those who limit their professional portfolio to street survival techniques. We would all be better off if these millions of taxpayer dollars were instead spent putting more officers on the streets, providing more and better training, and offering superior equipment to improve officer and public safety.

All law enforcement administrators will realize the liability, and vicarious liability, that comes from not embracing the type of cultural diversity training explained in this easy-to-understand and highly beneficial text.

5 out of 5 stars Criminal Just Instructor and State Police Lieutenant.......2007-04-22

I will simply say this about this text. This information is a must read for all who entertain the thought of being a police officer, be it city, county, state or federal. This text is crucial as an "additional tool" for officers; educating one's self in multi-cultural diversity is a good thing especially when taking into account the incredibly diverse population in the U.S. (A dozen scenarios of unecessarily escalated contact with police officers come to mind...)

I am a Lieutenant with the Indiana State Police and an adjunct criminal justice professor at a local college. My students are all interested in becoming police officers. For the most part they come from small towns in mostly white areas. The benefits of specific awareness/respect of other cultures will only help them should they reach their goal to become officers. The better educated more culturally aware officers are truly the most effective ones. Great investigators know how to relate to all kinds of people. This textbook gives us some insight into the communication barriers and cultural hot buttons as well as general behavioral aspects of others. I consider this topic a fundamental building block for a well rounded police officer. Through awareness and understanding we can perform our jobs better and better serve all of our citizens. (our duty) I think some of the previous reviews of this book must be from officers who are too stubborn to change or too disinterested to study. Most officers mistakenly believe that their skills at marksmanship, hand-to-hand self-defense, pursuit driving skills, physical fitness etc., are the most important attributes of a good police officer. Statististically speaking, officer safety and effectiveness improve dramatically by reversing the order and placing "communication" first in line. This text helps to point out better ways for officers to communicate to the people they are sworn to protect and serve. This improved communication has a residual increased officer safety. "I'd rather talk them into jail than fight all the way there..." My thoughts.

1 out of 5 stars One star too many.......2007-02-20

This book is garbage. It contains nothing that will help a police officer do their job safer or more effectively. This book is just a feel-good publication.

1 out of 5 stars someone not quoted in the book.......2006-10-26

I thought this book was the most horrible thing I've ever read. The lies, half-truths and hypocrisies should have this book listed under fiction. How bad is this book. When you have to have someone, that is a source for the material in the book, come online and give it a positive review it can't be worth a damn. That's right. David E. Barlow (who hides in the halls of academia) is quoted throughout this book and found it necessary to come here and defend this book by giving it a 5 star review. Those who can, do; those who can't, teach. And the truth never needs defending.

                                3 out of 5 stars Better than I expected.......2006-05-08

This was among the 7 pieces of source material on my most recent exam. It was better than I expected. I looked at it from the perspective that I should use a person's culture to my advantage. With a familiarity of culture specific issues, I can make myself a more effective police officer. I found the author's writing to be of high quality, but book did not make me more culturally diverse. If you are looking for a book that teaches you how to be a police officer, this is not it. If you are looking for a book that might explain why the Iranian guy got mad at you last week, this is the right one.

                                      Book Description

This book is based on the Proceedings of the 9th European Workshop on White Dwarfs, the most recent in a series of meetings which have become the most important events in this field. Many of the contributions, however, have been expanded considerably by the authors to include introductory material. This makes this volume a useful, up-to-date introduction into the present status of observations and theory of white dwarf stars.
