    Book Description

The Man of Fashion is an exuberantly designed and illustrated celebration of men through the ages who have dressed extravagantly in order to show their power, to express their sexuality, to set themselves apart from the conformist herd--or simply out of sheer joie de vivre. Throughout history, the peacock male--memorable, magnificent, or assertively confident--has strutted through the pages of men's fashion. Top fashion writer Colin McDowell charts this self-confident course, from the medieval knights, with their lavish heraldic dress, through the stuffed and codpieced Elizabethans, the fops, incroyables, bucks, dandies, and swells, right up to the aesthetes, zooties, mods, hippies, and punks of the twentieth century. McDowell discusses the influence on later generations of sports, class, the movies, and popular music, and he focuses on those iconic figures--including royals, cowboys, and screen idols--who have provided role models for our century. The metamorphosis of late-twentieth-century fashionable man is considered in detail, with special reference to the power of fashion photographers, the influence of gay culture, and the rise of the new generation of menswear designers, in particular Lauren, Armani, Versace, and Gaultier. Entertaining, informative, and endlessly surprising, this will be an indispensable volume for fashion historians, students, and enthusiasts.

I picked up a signed copy of this while living in London and was thrilled to finally find a book that addressed exuberance in masculine attire. Since then, I have discovered the extensive exuberance of male costume throughout the World and this book seems less impressive. It covers male clothing from Christian cultures, and is heavily influenced by the anti-luxury and anti-sex stance of Christianity. In other words, much of the clothing in this book comes across as naughty and scandalous rather than fun and life-affirming. There are some interesting pictures, but the overall feeling is one of cynicism.

...you could make a whole book out of strung-together factoids? That's what this book is.

Now, that's not altogether bad. If you're looking for the story of how a huge-selling novel that redefined our concept of organized crime was transformed into one of the most compelling movies of the last thirty-plus years, you WILL be disappointed. However, that's like saying going to a salad bar is not as satisfying as getting served a planked steak.

So, adjust your expectations. If you're looking for a fun collection of random little notes and items about these three films, this book suits. However, if you'd like a more in-depth look at how moviemaking can excel (I and II) or fall flat on its face (III), it's ain't here.

        3 out of 5 stars Bits'o'Mob.......2005-05-03

Facts and figures -- this book has a ton of them. "The Godfather" I, II and III each get a hefty section of the book, with cast listings and intriguing charts at the end of the book (the Corleone family tree, for one). The section for each movie is not a continuous narrative; it's a collection of vignettes, each with a catchy subheading. It might seem a noncommittal, "USA Today" approach, but it's basically fun.

        5 out of 5 stars It's an offer you can't refuse!.......2004-01-06

I read this a while ago, and it's terrific. Mostly because I can't see the movies, yet.

4 out of 5 stars Shallow but a lot of fun.......2001-09-20

The Godfather Companion is, more or less, a gossipy fanzine done deluxe. That said, its still full of fun bits of trivia about the Godfather trilogy and should be enjoyed by fans of the films (and really, who hasn't sometimes wished they were a Corleone?) Perhaps my favorite sections are the heavily detailed passages dealing with the other actors considered for the roles made famous by Brando, Pacino, Duvall, et al. Some of the alternative possibilities are nicely intriguing (Martin Sheen would have made an effective Tom Hagen though certainly not one with Duvall's moral shadings) while others simply boggle the mind. (Just imagine, this could have been a film starring Ernest Borgnine, David Carradine, and John Saxon!) Also of interest are the extensive listings of scenes and actors cut from the three films and a helpful Corleone Family Tree in the back of the book. This book doesn't attempt to go into any heavy analysis concerning these films (other then to prove that the Godfather's symbol of evil was, for reasons never really explained, the color oarnge) but its still a lot of fun.

3 out of 5 stars Biskind Falls Short.......1999-11-26

The Companion is a nice book with lots of trivia, however many of the facts stated are inaccurate. It's a must-have for the true padrinophile's collection, but for more accurate research, check out The Godfather Legacy by Harlan Lebo (1997), or The Godfather Book by Peter Cowie (1997).

2 out of 5 stars Good for making you think, but that is about it.......2004-04-22

I bought this book before heading to Vegas mainly because I wanted to brush up on the rules of blackjack. I was only going to have 4 hours there so i didn't want to waste any time getting ready to play. I found the second chapter and other sections that describe how things work in casinos (where to get your chips, what hand signals to give the dealer, etc) useful in keeping me from wasting time when i got there. The rest of it was worth reading to learn the rules of the games and to get me thinking about probabilities.

Unfortunately, the logic's not always there and sometimes the data are wrong.

          Some examples:

In the roulette section, he recommends that if you are going to bet on a single number, you should pick one that hasn't shown up in the past 20 spins. This, after explaining how a lot of people keep gambling on the faulty premise that if something hasn't happened in a while, it's likely to happen, and after describing bias in roulette tables, which would make a number more likely to re-appear if it HAS appeared multiple times before.

In the blackjack section, I re-calculated the probabilities for each of the tables that he has in there, and while most of his numbers are right, some of them are off by as much as 5%. True, my numbers could be wrong, but since i wrote a computer program to do it (meaning that it did it consistently for each test), why would it be right for all but one value in the table? More likely, they are hand-copying or editing errors.

I wrote software (yes, i'm a geek) to play the game, implemented his suggestions one by one, and played 100,000 hands with each to see what kind of improvement each one made. The fact is, if you play your hand just like the dealer (hold at 17+, hit below), you will win 48% of the time, lose 43% of the time, and push 9% of the time. If you implement all of his strategies, you will win 48% of the time, lose 43% of the time, and push 9% of the time (yup! exactly the same!). What's important turns out not to be how you play the game (in most of the strategies, you are trading busts for losing hands and vice versa), but how you BET. Using his doubling and splitting strategies lets you hang on to your money much longer before going broke (sometimes twice as long). In the blackjack section, he doesn't spend much time talking about betting.

Lastly, and this applies to blackjack again, he claims that the casino's main advantage in blackjack lies in the fact that "the players must choose before the dealer whether or not to draw more cards." While it's true that you could play a lot better if you could see the dealer's cards, that is not what gives the casino the advantage. Remember, the dealer is basically a human machine -- it hits at < 17, holds at 17+. The dealer does not have the benefit of seeing EITHER of your cards, so that can't be the advantage. The casino's real advantage is that the player has one more losing condition than the dealer has. That condition occurs when both the dealer and the player bust. Other than that, if the player played exactly like the dealer, they would both do exactly the same. You cannot overcome this handicap. If you play conservatively such that you do not bust (which is where most of Svoboda's recommendations lead you), the percentage of hands you lose because the dealer has more points than you will go up.

That's about it for now. Just wait till I read the other chapters, though!

5 out of 5 stars Do it again!.......2004-03-19

Once I picked up this book I knew immediately I would breeze through the explainations easily. The text was well done and very readable = the charts, graphs and diagrams all came at the right time. The tid-bits about Mr Svoboda's experiences were fun to read, But.. most of all I was able to acquire a grounded knowledge of how to approach the games at any casino! Can't wait for the next book to come out from Mt Svoboda!! His knowledge and skills at communicating the nuances and the details of each game were very evident! Fun and easy lessons!!

          1 out of 5 stars garbage.......2002-01-08

I browsed through this book at the local bookstore. All I can say is don't take any pointers from this guy. He says before placing bets on "any craps", you should wait until the die hasn't produced craps for atleast 18 rolls???? He says after this the probability of any craps showing is 88 %. What is this all about? The truth is the odds of rolling craps is the same (11 %) regardless of how many times it's been rolled in the past. If you already own this book, I suggest you take your loss and throw it away.

          1 out of 5 stars Incorrect information.......2001-07-11

This is the first review I have written on Amazon. I felt compelled to write this to keep unsuspecting people from purchasing this book. I do not know the author, I am not an author, and I have no interests in whether this book does well or not. I am simply giving my opinion.

Simply put, my problem with this book is that it is full of incorrect statements and poor advice which completely ignores probability theory. For example, on roulette, Mr. Svoboda actually says, "The house will always have a 5.26% edge, but you can increase your winning probabilities by playing it smart." What?!? When I read that, I knew he had a very weak grasp of probability theory. It is impossible to change the odds in roulette; they are fixed. You are always at a 5.26% disadvantage, no matter what your betting strategy is. Period. I suggest you run away from any book that asserts otherwise.

The surprising thing is that in several parts of the book, Mr. Svoboda agrees that the casino has an advantage over the player in the long run. However, to overcome this, he recommends that players play in the short run! I couldn't believe that an engineer, and someone who supposedly understands mathematics and probability, would actually write such completely incorrect information. True, in the short run you may win, but odds are that you will lose. The percentage disadvantage you face does not change.

Over and over, Mr. Svoboda asserts that his strategies increase your chances of winning. How can you increase your chances of winning if the odds against you are fixed? For example, after several pages of detailed and complex tables and charts, Mr. Svoboda admits that his craps betting strategy gives the house a 2% advantage. Yet he still advocates following his strategy, saying that you just need to know when to walk away when ahead. What he fails to mention is that you will be behind more often than you will be ahead.

In games of chance and independent trials (such as craps, roulette and keno, to name a few), the house has a fixed percentage advantage over the player. This is a proven mathematical fact. There are no betting systems or strategies whish can change this percentage advantage. The only thing a player may do is bet slowly and bet the minimums in order to decrease the rate at which he loses. Gambling at these types of games should be viewed as paying for entertainment, not investing, as Mr. Svoboda suggests.

Casinos love people with systems. Why do you think companies choose to spend $1 billion to build a new casino? Because they know that system betters will come in and lose more than that. Casinos exist because they make money for their owners. I had thought that with the advanced level of gaming theory available today, that books which advocated incorrect probability theory would become a thing of the past. Then I read Mr. Svoboda's book and realized I was wrong.

On the plus side, the book does clearly state the rules of the games and the odds of winning. It has very pretty and colorful charts and tables. As a rule book, it is very good. However, as a strategy guide, you are much better off ignoring this book. Mr. Svoboda's assertion that "this book will help you learn how to level the playing field...and gain a return on your investment" is false. This book does not tell you how to even the odds against the house. The only return on investment you will get by following the advice in this book is negative.

5 out of 5 stars A Casino Gaming Guide You'd Like to Have Around.......2001-03-04

Beating The Casinos At Their Own Game is a book you should consider if you'd like some help playing at the casinos. It's a well, written and nicely illustrated 278-page gambling guide with instructions for most of the games you'll find at any casino. The author, Peter Svoboda, knows his math because he has the credentials: a degree in both mechanical and civil engineering.

You'll find casino basics in chapters 1 and 2 including some history, odds of winning and losing, what the casinos do to get you there, the house advantage, advice on managing your money and when to quit. And if you have a gambling problem, Peter will direct you to the right place. Chapters 3 through 13 list rules of the ten most popular casino games, with playing strategies and some betting systems you can try. The illustrations will help you learn the games and the math listed will explain the odds and probabilities of winning.

Peter includes some known strategies for Craps, Roulette and Baccarat. So, if you're inexperienced at any of these games, you can take an expert with you to the casino. Peter also presents some of his own winning systems.

If you've never been to a casino, but think you might want to try some of the games offered, I'd recommend studying this book before you enter. It has all the basic playing information you'll need to improve your chances of winning...

A short book which presents the basic principles of Lean Enterprise from the Toyota creation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction & Overview to TPS/Lean.......2007-03-26

This is an execellent overview and introduction to TPS. It is clear and concise without all of the case studies but it covers all of the basics of TPS. It is an easy read for the novice and will give a good grounding an overview of the key elements of TPS as a system that it is and should be understood as.

In addition to the basic elements of TPS/Lean the author also adds the Toyota elements of the strategic planning process and roles played by the various levels of management. This is an added bonus and is an area of TPS that is not very well addressed in other literature I have read...at least not in any real detail.

If you really want a good solid quick overview of TPS/Lean without all of the case studies, then I highly recommend this book.

          Book Description

Grant wrote his "Personal Memoirs" to secure his family's future. In doing so, the Civil War's greatest general won himself a unique place in American letters. His character, sense of purpose, and simple compassion are evident throughout this deeply moving account, as well as in the letters to his wife, Julia, included here.

5 out of 5 stars U.S. Grant in his own words..........2007-06-26

U.S. Grant is often said to have been a failure at everything in his life except his marriage, war, and his memoirs. The latter, written as he was dying of throat cancer in 1884-1885, provide a straightforward account of his years in uniform during the Civil War.

Grant passes quickly over his Ohio boyhood and time at the United States Military Academy. His service in the Mexican War and his financial misfortunes out of uniform between the wars get only slightly more coverage. His story really begins with his return to uniform in 1861 as a commander of Illinois volunteers. The narrative follows Grant's campaigns in Missouri, Tennessee, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, his elevation to supreme command of the Union Armies, and the final grinding agony of the war in Virgina. The account ends with the cessation of hostilies in 1865.

Grant's memoirs are remarkable reading for a number of reasons. First, they provide insight into the first-rate military mind of a consistantly successful general. Grant's ability to determine the essentials of a situation and remain focused on them are evident. Second, the memoirs are a classic example of clear, simple, English narrative. Third, they display the considerable modesty of a naturally reserved man, a departure from the egotism often found in the personal memoirs of famous men. Grant himself continues to be something of a mystery to historians; these memoirs do not really lift the veil of his sense of privacy.

The Union Army of the Civil War had more than its fair share of politicians in uniform and politically-minded generals. Grant was not immune to spinning history his way; careful-eyed scholars have found more than a few instances where Grant remembered only part of the story or settled a few scores with old opponents. Nevertheless, Grant's memoirs are a valuable resource for understanding the conduct of the Civil War, not least because Grant became such a key figure in the winning of it.

Grant's memoirs are highly recommended to students of the Civil War, and to scholars seeking to understand the art of war in the midst of rebellion.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Memoirs of US Grant.......2006-07-10

General Grant's use of the English language is very interesting and informative. Absolutely a pleasure to read.

          5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2006-02-22

This book is a must-read for any Civil War or American history buff. Grant's writing is consistently clear, elegant, beautiful. He gives an engaging account of his wartime experiences that are accurate to the best of his ability, and he writes with introspection and humility. The personal letters at the end of the volume reveal much about this fascinating man, and are a welcome addition. Please read this one! Another wonderful book in this series is the volume containing Frederick Douglass's autobiographical works.

          5 out of 5 stars A History Buff's Wet Dream..........2006-01-17

This is certainly a great book, and in parts, it is a good book. Grant has a very terse, matter-of-fact style, which makes for easy reading. The bulk of the book is devoted to the Civil War, and there are dry patches, and multitudes of "We went to the ridge, and then to the river, and moved our artillery up to the picket" and such-like. But that is what happened, and so you can't fault Grant for his meticulous detailing of troop movements, correspondence with fellow officers, etc. As I said, the great majority of the book is devoted to the Civil War, and there is not a word about Grant's tenure in the White House. Personally, of all topics covered by Grant, I find him to be most fascinating on the subject of the Mexican-American War of 1847. This is not something commonly focused on in history classes, but Grant's account is riveting. Additionally, Grant's remembrances of Lincoln are very interesting, as is his almost awed reverence for the military abilities of Sherman. The book is long, but it doesn't seem long, and if you have a love of history, this is indispensable stuff.

A unique chronicle of one who saved the Union. Lucid, entertaining, and expansive. A rare view of one of the most important lives in the 19C. Highly recommended

Each issue of the journal comes complete with a free large-scale modeller's draught with accompanying modelling notes, illustrations and specifications for a featured vessel.

This kit comes from a series that includes "Ancient Egypt", "Ancient Greece", "Ancient Rome", "Ancient Sock Drawer". You are much better off going to a Chinese Grocery Store or an actual Chinese person for the same information. The Trinkets (I-Ching Coins and ink/brush combo) are nice, but with the proliferation of Chinese Astrology Kits and Chinese Ink Painting Kits (Damn you, Klutz Press, what have you Wrought??), you do get more by buying the extra trinkets separately. No synergism here folks, just a handy cardboard treasure chest of Asian Exotica. Yeah right. I also bought 500 Army Men for $1.98. Buy it if you want, just don't get your hopes up!

4 out of 5 stars Good enrichment material for Ancient China.......2004-09-01

This is the second item from Running Press' "Treasure Chest" series that I have used (I bought "Ancient Egypt" before.) Overall, the Ancient China set is good, and I would recommend it, but it does have some problems.
The calligraphy kit worked better than I expected, and we both had a good time with it. My daughter lost the I Ching coins, so I never got to try them. Both the Chinese chess and the Great Wall watchtower model were relatively simple, but the instructions were unclear, this was the biggest flaw of the whole kit. The map and stickers were a hit with my daughter,as was the deities poster. I was surprised to see some of the figures included, like Shi-Huangdi (no mention of his campaign of terror and book burning) and Buddha while Confucius was excluded. The folding fan was cute, but stickers don't adhere too well to the folds, as can be expected. The book provided excellent snippets of information surrounded with great illustrations, I was very pleased with it.
Overall, I would say my 7yo and I enjoyed it and I intend to buy more kits form this series.

4 out of 5 stars Fun but limited........2003-06-06

I used this with a group of 10 year olds (as a model for creating their own treasure chest) and they thoroughly enjoyed it.

The contents stimulated some discussion and the building of the models and map were enjoyed.

However, it is really a stimulous to further research rather than a source of anything other than 'bit' knowledge.

Having said that, it was worth buying.

              5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2001-03-07
