4 out of 5 stars Early Santa Fe and Taos Art Colonies in Mabel's World.......2002-06-07

In December of 1917, Mabel Dodge Luhan, a wealthy patron of the arts, arrived in the very rural community of Taos, New Mexico. She arrived with an emotional need that drove her to be a focal point and a catalyst in the New Mexico art community. Although she died in 1962, she is still a controversial figure in Taos, where her spirit lingers in her house; now a Bread and Breakfast frequently used for artists retreats. Her personal artistic expression is found in the books she wrote, but she is best known for the amazing role she played in drawing painters, writers, and other artists to Taos and Santa Fe.

"Mabel's Santa Fe and Taos" gives a brief biography of Mabel and of many of the most famous people whose lives she influenced. The people covered in this book include Charles Lummis, Adolf Bandelier, the Taos Society of Artists, Alice Corbin Henderson and William Penhallow Henderson, Witter Bynner, Spud Johnson, Andrew Dasburg, D.H Lawrence and Frieda Lawrence, Dorothy Brett, and Georgia O'Keefe. This book also contains historical information about the culture of Taos and Santa Fe from 1900-1950, weaving together the people and the places in Mabel's world.

The text is informative and well written. Black and white photographs of the people and places are found throughout the book. Although this is an excellent overview that could be appreciated and understood by those new to the subject, it can also be used to summarize previous knowledge of the Santa Fe and Taos art colony during this time period.

    Book Description

For five years, photographer Salvo Galano visited a park near the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen in New York. There, tens of thousands of homeless men, women, and children have gathered daily for food, friendship, and guidance since its inception in 1982. Galano set up a makeshift studio with a simple burlap backdrop and photographed the fascinating characters he encountered, documenting their stories of love, loss, and survival. Sidewalk Stories, Galano's moving testimony to the power of the human spirit, showcases some of New York City's most remarkable individuals - the homeless - and their integrity and courage despite the stigma of homelessness. Accompanied by mind-boggling, up-to-the-minute statistics on this dire situation, Sidewalk Stories illustrates that homelessness could happen to any of us: Naval Academy cadets, policemen, performers, inventors, grandmothers, families, the disabled...But as Galano writes, "Homeless does not necessarily mean hopeless." Proceeds from the sales of Sidewalk Stories will be donated to the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars People like us.......2001-12-12

With this amazing book Salvo Galano, finally, shows a simple truth: homeless are not space aliens fallen on our sidewalks. They are people, they love, they smile, they smoke, they fight, they fall. They have stories, they were clerks, soldiers, artists. They were us, until something went wrong. Usually not terribly wrong, they got fired, they got evicted, they lost all their money recovering from an accident not covered by the insurance. Salvo put them in front of the camera, like actors, or models, or important people revealing a world of beautiful human being who happened to be homeless.

5 out of 5 stars A new perspective on the homeless.......2001-12-11

Mr. Galano's work is beautiful, meaningful and unique. All New Yorkers have some experience with the homeless. All too often, we forget that homeless people are just that--people with stories, friends and loved ones. The combination of statistics on the homeless situation coupled with Mr. Galano's insightful and beautiful photographs is not only moving, but also fresh. We all need to be reminded that homelessness is not a choice. Homeless people have histories just like the rest of us and Mr. Galano brings dignity and beauty to this horrible situation and makes us realize that we must do more to recify this staggering situation.

        Book Description

Will Christina ever make the right choices in her life, or is there something wrong with her? Is she indeed normal and all of her problems are exaggerated in the caves of her mind? She has been looking for the ideal man and for unconditional love all her life, but to no avail. The biggest part of her life has been, after all, a collection of bad decisions, which have caused her pain and agonizing sorrow, and people who used and abused her and left her devoid of any human emotions. It was during this painful journey that she thought she found her “soulmate,” only to realize, after the afterglow, that this too was the wrong decision. Now, alone, middle-aged, and filled with despair and guilt, she smiles endlessly on the outside while her inner soul grasps to reach whatever life there is left for her to live.

With ruminations on drawing, color and caricature, and on the political meaning of fairy tales, talking animals and human beings as machines, Hollywood Flatlands brings to light the links between animation, avant-garde art and modernist criticism. It questions what T.W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Walter Benjamin, Clement Greenberg and others actually thought of popular culture. 13 color and 33 b/w illustrations.

                            Book Description

The author applies musical principles as a method of understanding the structure of the human body and the forces that affect it. He uses our experience of music to explain the physiological and anatomical relationships in the body and to shed light on the spiritual influences that determine physical development. Husemann draws on artistic exercises given by Rudolf Steiner, the Austrian philosopher and spiritual master, to come to an understanding of these influences. He also explores the cosmic origins of human beings and the evolutionary laws that govern our development.

The ability to effectively delegate is one of the most important attributes of a strong leader. This book dissects the act of delegation and sections it into definable and repeatable steps, creating a process. This book should be taught in MBA courses. My entire staff has read this book and strives to practice its lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Worth a quick read - will hone your skills.......2007-01-09

You can read this one in about an hour, but you will probably want to read it twice. Excellent refresher or beginner for managers. I was surprised how a little self-reflection prompted by this book helped me hone my delegation skills. I have a colleague who keeps the 'quick reference' that comes with the book on hand at all times, and uses the steps to review his project list every week. The story is a bit simplistic, but it gets the point across.

5 out of 5 stars A believable story about effective delegation.......2005-11-21

Some parables are great stories, but not "real world stories". This book made sense to me!

Similar to the One Minute Manager books, but the two main characters are not "super hero types".

Excellent summaries on key points, and an executive summary list at the end of the book.

A fun, easy read that could help you become a more effective delegator.

                            2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-11-05

I expected more concrete advice regarding follow up and accountability. Also, I find "Minute Mangager"-style business parables annoying. The book has some good points, though they could have been presented in a couple pages of punchy prose.

                            5 out of 5 stars Worth reading........2004-06-17

This is a very clever and entertaining story that teaches simple, important steps for more effective time, work, and life management. Delegation is difficult for many of us successful people, but Dr. Genett inspires us to stretch for the purposes of stress reduction and optimal performance.
                            Highly recommend.

Such an impossible story is made possible in this truly unique story of Shant's journey home. Each chapter draws you closer to the end, but also to a new beginning. Shant has done an excellent job making the reader feel as if they are along side him on his journey, and his attention to detail is outstanding. I highly recommend getting a hold of this book, (just make sure you start reading it with some time on your hands, once you pick it up, you won't want to put it down)!

I started this book at 4PM and finished it at 10pm. I could not put it down. All of our human experience is listed here in this book. Hope, Dispair, Depression, Terror, More Depression, Hope again, Love, and finally freedom. Shant is a wonderful person and having met him in our Camp (403rd MP POW Camp, Enc. 2) I wish him and his family the best. He deserves it for all he has been thru. Hugh Grossman

                            4 out of 5 stars Excellent Story.......2006-02-27

This is an excellent story. I knew the author from the war itself. He was a visitor in my EPW enclosure. Then I found him very interesting and now after reading the book I that thought is now confirmed. The book is written in a style that is easy to read. You need not be a veteran or a middle eastern expert to enjoy the book. The book is written in a way that drags you in. Once I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. It is really fascinating to see the war from the other side. It deepens one's own understanding of events in the middle east then and now. There is a another plus to reading the book. In a way Shant is a modern day Joseph. Each of his experiences lead him to another experience which moved him closer to home. You can see in the book how God was protecting Shant. Two boats were sunk from under his feet in the same day. All throughout his travels in the Army bureaucracy Shant was able to find friends who helped him. God truly was working. No matter what your view on faith or the war you will enjoy this book as a story of triumph of man in a quest for freedom all of us take for granted.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring True Story of American POW.......2006-02-20

"1001 Nights" is the inspirational memoir of Shant Kenderian, an Iraqi-Armenian who was raised in Chicago and is forced to join the Iraqi Navy upon his visit to Iraq (to see his father). Shant reveals several near-death episodes that he encounters en route to becoming an American Prisoner Of War (POW), which was his hope from the beginning of the war so that he could somehow reunite with his mother and brother in Los Angeles.

Shant's story at times is so sad, yet comical and real. "I served in both wars, but never had a gun. You can't fight when you don't have a gun." Even worse, the Iraqi Government supplied his boat with the wrong caliber ammunition.

"The contrast between the American and Iraqi soldiers and the way they were equipped were astounding. The 15 soldiers on the L-87 had - collectively - two guns, one helmet, and fifteen old gas masks with ineffective chemical kits."

After being captured, Shant exposes the harsh reality of being a POW and dealing with military interrogations. From his inconsistent eating and sleeping habits to his aiding American soldiers, Shant's detailed descriptions makes the reader feel present in the Persian Gulf.

Shant's strong Armenian Christian faith provides him strength between POW camps. His strange background, combined with his friendly personality and dry humor, is found welcoming to American soldiers, as he becomes a celebrity known as "Mr. Chicago" and befriends soldiers who help improve his living conditions and do what they can to reunite him with his family in Los Angeles.

There are many other incredible moments in Shant's journey that are worth mentioning, including his love for Monica, his use of Prince Bandar's cellular telephone, and his haunting memory of a 16 year-old Iraqi's execution for stealing a watch.

This is as interesting a book as I've ever read. It's an easy read with many fascinating and unbelievable episodes. Anyone remotely interested in politics, Desert Storm, Iraq, or the American Dream should grab a copy.

I just finished reading this book. I read it in less than one day, and was amazed at how easy it was to read. This story is awesome....I knew of this story when i was younger....but the details were never told to me. I grew up with his wife, and Shant always has a smile on his face whenever I have seen him(I had no idea what this man had been through). They are both very lucky to have each other. My favorite part of this book is how Shant finds Love (with a female) in a POW camp in the middle of a War torn country.Another great part of this story is his Respect for others around him, and his trust in God.......Congrats on your amazing survival.....Great Book, Great Wife, Great kids.......whats next?

As a Mexican American I have read several books about Mexico's history. This one was probably the greatest eye-opener. It goes where other authors refuse to tread. Discussing government corruption and much more. The author does not hold any punches back. He discloses facts such as that the Mexican government doesn't treat Mexicans much better than the U.S. treats them. The book may leave you with a sense of hopelessness. But it will definitely enlighten you. The only bad thing about this book is that the discussion on history is in desperate need of an overhaul, and that's why I cannot give this book 4 or 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars decoding the culture.......2007-01-20

I read this book years ago and still use it as a reference. I have traveled and studied in Mexico for many years and speak Spanish. So few Americans really understand Mexico, especially the roots of corruption, things like Mordidas, the military, police etc. This book enlightens and explains. A number of Mexican friends (certainly not those in the Government)agree. The sad fact is there are many things about Mexico that the Mexican government would rather not discuss or have us know. One of the reasons so few books deal honestly with the problems of Mexico. This book or (any book) that deals honestly with the problems of Mexico must necessarily risk engendering some feelings of hopelessness among some readers but such is, often, the nature of truth.

                                2 out of 5 stars Distant Narrator.......2006-09-07

Alan Riding's book-length description of the people and culture of Mexico is as broad as the Rio Grande, as sprawling as the Sierra Madre, and as dry as Lake Texcoco. Dated, too, published in 1985, well before NAFTA and the collapse of Mexico's long-ruling PRI party, but what really hurts the readability of this book is Riding's total disengagement from the subject.

"At risk of caricature, a typical Mexican family can still be stereotyped," Riding writes. "The father is the undisputed figure of authority who has little respect for - or communication with - his wife. He expects to be served royally at home, but he spends much of his time and money drinking with friends or visiting his mistress. He pays minimal attention to his children, although he carries great importance to having a male firstborn who carries his name. The mother, rejected as a wife and a lover by her husband, tries to alleviate..."

Riding goes on like this for a while, but I won't. What really annoyed me about "Distant Neighbors" aren't his generalizations (they may be perfectly valid) but the tone of jaded detachment behind it. He might as well be tracking hippos in Zambia for all the passion he derives from his subjects.

Another thing I had trouble with: What exactly is "Distant Neighbors" about? The title seems to suggest the relationship between Mexico and the United States, and he starts in that vein noting how odd it is two such different countries share so long a border. But the theme isn't carried through the rest of the book, which deals just with Mexico. The idea then seems to be the "distant neighbors" of class, beliefs, and ethnicity that divide this closely-packed country. If so, it is not drawn out.

Riding covers a lot of ground, though more with dates and statistics then by capturing the voices of real Mexicans. When he finally returns to the subject of Mexican-U.S. relations in the last fourth of the book, it's a well-observed narrative with striking observations, like how deep the wounds of the Mexican War still penetrate the Mexican psyche and how badly Mexican President Lopez Portillo got on with U.S. President Carter. Oddly, Lopez Portillo was friendlier with Carter's successor, Ronald Reagan, despite the wider gulf in their ideologies; Riding notes deftly how this bespeaks a certain divide between rhetoric and reality where Mexican politics are concerned.

But for the most part, "Distant Neighbors" is a relentless, reflexively pessimistic book. "The system has in fact never lived without corruption and it would disintegrate or change beyond recognition if it tried to do so," he writes, as if one would be as bad as the other.

Worse, it lacks a sense Riding really invested himself of where he lived and worked for years as Mexico City bureau chief for the New York Times. Timesmen like Hedrick Smith ("The Russians") and Thomas Friedman ("From Beirut To Jerusalem") managed to produce books about past beats that give the reader a real flavor, and even zest, for the places and the people they describe. Riding, by contrast, gives you the feeling he couldn't wait to leave Mexico. In his hands, neither can you.

5 out of 5 stars Still useful despite being written 2 decades ago.......2006-02-07

This is a terrific book. The history section is naturally outdated, but some people could still benefit from this book:

-Businessmen: you usually deal with rich people when you come here and the upper-class in here has not evoluted very much since the mid 80's. It seems they have changed quite a bit, but not so. Most of them are still pretty much the same deeply religious Catholic people. You could meet their daughters who have gone to rich nations to get college education; many of those women even work, but eventually let their husbands make the money. You can see how this upper class has not changed in the fact that they rule the business world here and most companies are being wiped out by foreign competition. They are not innovating or changing. In other times they would blame the government for their misfortunes but the current government is made of this type of people.

-Exchange students: Again, you are likely to deal with rich people so read paragraph above.

-Students majoring in Mexican or Latin studies: Even when it outdated you'll hardly find a book that keep again from Liberal or Conservatives agendas. The book presents a very balanced view of the Mexico conquest by then Spaniards. Traditional Liberal textbooks portray the Spaniards as the bad guy. But this books shows that the Indian were always in wars, they helped the Spaniards to get rid o the Aztec oppression and the Spaniards stopped the human sacrifices. You will really need to read these sections in order to have a more balanced view of Mexico.

The author even considered the relationships of Mexico with Central America. That was good indeed; many people in here seem to think that beyond our borders only rich countries exist. This why when many journalist complain about mistreatment of Mexican in US, some others well state the Mexico doesn't treat Central American well either.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Book in English about Mexico and Mexicans........2003-09-07

The Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) Times calls this the best book in English about Mexico. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars was some of the history. It needs someone to do an update of Fox's Presidency and Commandante Marcos.
Growing up in New York, it was just a facsination. I now live in Tucson, Arizona. The border is an hour away. Distant Neighbors is an apt description. American and Mexicans talk past each other without really hearing each other. His best chapters? The beginning chapters about how the Mexican nation was born and the later chapters about the different regions of this diverse country. Distant Neighbors is my guide to start exploring beyond Nogales.
