Book Description
The history of Western art—from the mosaics of the Byzantine Empire, to the Renaissance courts of Florence, to the revolutionary forms of early 20th-century modernism—is a story of economics as much as aesthetics. The interplay between patron and artist, commerce and culture, is the engine that, for centuries, has driven paradigmatic change in the artistic world. In Marks of Opulence, historian Colin Platt takes us on an ambitious sweep through a thousand years of artistic endeavor, revealing the fascinating economic and social context of the West’s most cherished works of art. An illuminating study, rich in fascinating detail and skillful analysis.

Doubts.......2006-11-21
The writer clearly knows a lot [though I did notice slips] and can write engagingly, but I felt the book lacked a clear purpose and at times there were so many artists and works the writer felt were relevant and worth mentioning that a list-like effect was not avoided.
Book Description
Manji, the immortal samurai, is condemned to a life of combat until he slays a thousand evil men. He works as bodyguard for Rin, a young woman who seeks to avenge her father`s murder at the hands of the deadly Kagehisa Anotsu. But even with Manji`s instruction, will Rin ever be able to stand against such a powerful and ruthless adversary? And in her consuming quest for vengeance, does she risk becoming like him?
Customer Reviews:
An interesting story line, but no action........2004-01-25
There aren't really any action scenes worth talking about in this novel. Rin does a few things, but she doesn't actually "fight". There is a story about this guy and his masks, but that isn't fully developed until the next volume.
This isn't a great place to start for your first volume. It mostly just develops story, but the story is important. Start somewhere else though. Get DREAMSONG if you can't fight a good seller for BLOOD OF A THOUSAND.
Those who already own the previous volumes of BOTI could skip this book and the next possibly. It develops Rin some, but I skipped it for a while and was fine.
Review of Volume 1.......2002-10-12
This volume and its sequel capture events from issues 19 through 28 of the manga comic books, and represents events in the earlier phases of the adventures of Rin and Manji. It contains two stories, "Rin's Bane," and the first part of "On Silent Wings." Both of these are strong stories that trace Rin's growth from a young girl hell-bent on vengeance for the murder of her parents into a woman who is beginning to understand the real price of retaliations.
In "Rin's Bane," the young swordswoman, smarting from an argument with Manji over her fighting skills heads off into the woods to wash her hair. There she finds herself face to face with Kagehisa Anotsu, the leader of the Itto-Ryu swordsmen. Anotsu brushes aside her skills, and she is forced to face some very unpleasant truths about her beliefs. The lessons of this encounter haunt Rin in the next story, "On Silent Wings." Manji and Rin are at a local fair when the immortal swordsman suddenly finds that a local mask maker is another Itto-Ryu. In a parallel encounter, Rin risks her own life to prevent a haughty samurai from killing a young child. Manji barely avoids a public battle, and Rin is shocked to recognize the artist as the killer who defiled her mother.
As events proceed inexorably towards the second volume's part of the story, we sense the internal tensions in Rin and her swordsman as they confront the possible outcomes of their actions. Hiroaki Samura's tale again touches on complex moral issues rather than simply dishing out a violent samurai melodrama. The grim horror that counterpoints the lighter exchanges between Samura's main encounters provides the basis for much thought and consideration. One of the surprises in this series has been the quality of the translation, which manages to carry through the whole range of the dialog. Yet Japanese is preserved where it is part if the detailed and carefully composed artwork. This extremely high level of artistic integrity grows on the reader. "Blade of the Immortal" is much more a genuine graphic novel than it is a simple manga.
Beautiful art with an intellectual twist.......2001-07-25
The first time I looked at the Blade of the Immortal series, I seriously thought "Oh wonderful, another cheesy, gore ridden series with no plot and ... artwork." However, upon reading it I was taken aback by how wrong I truly was. The art is beautiful in its own way, unique and sketchy looking with no possible way it could be turned into an anime and still look as gorgeous. The story is also very nice, there is blood, but there is a good intellectual plot with the occasional twist of witty humor. It is an interesting mix of fact and fantasy, real and surreal all mixed in a historical setting. This series is set apart from others and I don't believe that I have any others quite like it. It never gets old. I highly recommend that, no matter what you're interested in, you should at least give this stunning series a try.
a must-get.......2001-03-19
this is one of the best comics i've ever read. it's about manji's job as a bodyguard for rin, who confronts Anotsu Kagehisa, who killed rin's father. she attemps to kill him, but does she really even stand a chance?this book was explosive and had a mix of action and explaining of the story for people who did not read any other of the Blade of the immortal series.
How do you say "sweet!".......2001-03-08
Dude this book is beast!! The best comic company ever (dark horse comics) has once again put out another comic that doesn't just raise the bar it obliterates it. Kudos to Hiroaki Samura for making the best comic book ever.

Book Description
Ever wonder what Nero did before he began fiddling about in Rome, or wanted the bare facts about Lady Godiva? Maybe you've found the story of Lucrezia Borgia a bitter pill to swallow, or wanted the straight skinny on corpulent King Henry the Eighth, but you haven't the stomach for stuffy history books. Now these and twenty-two more of history's most famous personages are brought brilliantly to life, in this collection of unfailingly accurate yet undeniably hilarious biographies. You'll laugh while you learn about the very real people behind the legendary names, including why Montezuma was so vengeful, and why Catherine was so Great. You'll even finally lay to rest the rumor that Charlemagne was called "Chuck" by his friends.

The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-14
This book is historically accurate, funny, satirical, informative, entertaining - in a single word "wonderful". It has been an inspiration to me. When I found out that there was no more Willy Cuppy I was so disappointed that I started my own series on Famous Folks. I have temporarily entitled my book Hobo Notes on Famous Folks.
Obviously I loved the idea and the style of Willy Cuppy. Of course Will is much smarter than I am, but hopefully I can make up for my inadequacy in other ways.
Willy inspires me to sit down and start writing as does Robert Service and Mark Twain.
You can't miss with anything by Willy Cuppy - this is probably his most well known publication.
An oldie but a goodie.......2007-04-03
I have an original copy of the 1963 printing of Will Cuppy's The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody. Cuppy was a hilliarious writer. To do good comedy one has to take it seriously and Cuppy takes his history seriously, but I can't read his history without chuckling. His footnotes add to the humorous text. In this book he lampoons the various characters we learned about in highschool including Hannibal, Cleopatra, Columbus and Montezuma just to name a few. Will Cuppy makes one interested in what used to be just dull dates and factoids. Go for this one, you won't be disappointed.
Must read for any history or humour buff.......2007-03-06
I have read this work so many times I have worn out three copies, no exaggeration. It is delightful humour, of a sort rarely found nowadays. And it's not too bad as a history either. No "1066 and all that" drollery here. This is genuinely amusing, and it has held readers captive for decades. This book inspired me to seek the history behind the humour which has led to three decades of being a contented arm chair historian.
You will not be disappointed in this book, which I feel is Cuppy's best.
The Decline and Fall of Practicaly Everybody by Will Cuppy.......2007-01-15
One of my all-time favorites. My decades-old copy was literally falling apart, so I was glad to find a hard-cover edition available at a reasonable price.
A Fond Memory Returned.......2006-04-07
My high school history teacher (who was no fool and knew his stuff better than some professors I met in college) gave me this book. His copy was the original thing-- almost falling apart from being loved by so many students. It managed to spark an interest in history in me, because quite frankly I have no patience for the "golden sheen" that so many people try to put on historical figures. Who on earth cares about someone who's so perfect you could never talk to them, anyway? Let's face it, the so-called "greats" were people with flaws and quirks just like we are! Bravo to Will Cuppy for having the guts and the skill to portray them in a way that makes us laugh and makes us question a little beyond the almost impenetrable veil of History.
Book Description
Four years after writing his first novel, THE BIG SLEEP, Raymond Chandler found himself sitting in an office at Paramount Studios earning a weekly salary that amounted to almost half of what he had received for the film rights to his second novel, FAREWELL MY LOVELY. Despite the considerable rewards, he was always uncertain, often disgruntled, never at ease. RAYMOND CHANDLER IN HOLLYWOOD is an entertaining and comprehensive assessment of Chandler's turbulent association with Hollywood, both as a screenwriter whose credits included DOUBLE INDEMNITY, THE BLUE DAHLIA, and STRANGERS ON A TRAIN and as the provider of source material - his six filmmed novels have so far yielded ten movies. Illustrated with rare stills, posters, and location photographs, this book provides a special insight into the work of the world's most acclaimed writer of detective fiction.
Customer Reviews:
Good for those who don't know Chandler.......2001-06-16
This book provides an entertaining look at film adaptations of Chandler's books and at the movies made from his screenplays. If you've read anything about Chandler, nothing here will be news to you, but if you haven't, this is a good introduction, with long plot-summary-type discussions of the movies and plenty of pictures.

Absolutely fabulous!.......1999-06-02
This book/playing card boxed set features the wonderful illustrations of Tony Meeuwissen and his witty visual interpretations of nursery rhymes of the British Isles. The book very cleverly creates a common thread between these ditties and then brings them all together, amazingly enough, in the playing cards. Incredibly well done, this book is part mystery, part history, part child's play, and is entirely worth the effort in finding it.

Book Description
As the peerless warrior who brought the U.S. Army to its knees at the Battle of Little Bighorn, Crazy Horse remains one of the most perennially fascinating figures of the American West. Now Joseph MarshallÂa masterful storyteller, historian, and descendant of the same Lakota community that raised Crazy HorseÂgoes beyond that image in this one-of-a-kind portrait of the legendary leader. Drawing on extensive research and a rich oral tradition that is rarely shared outside the Native American community, Marshall gives us a uniquely complete portrait of Crazy Horse, from the powerful vision that spurred him into battle to the woman he loved but lost to circumstance. The Journey of Crazy Horse celebrates a long-standing communityÂ's enduring culture and gives vibrant life to its most trusted and revered hero.
Customer Reviews:
Crazy Horse comes to life!.......2007-10-08
As a history instructor at a junior college, I highly commend Mr. Marshall for his first class work on the esteemed Crazy Horse. Based on the centuries-old tradition of oral history that is passed down from one generation to the next, Marshall relies on the many traditions of his youth and adulthood.
He has created a work that goes far beyond the idolization of heroes of the past. He presents Crazy Horse as the magnificent leader of his day but the author also tells of a mortal human being with strengths and weaknesses, as all leaders have been throughout history.
Marshall takes us to a time and place in our minds that is both vivid and revealing. The author has written a masterpiece, providing maps and an index explaining the various names given by the Lakota of the months and how they coincide with the Eurocentric definition of the calendar year. This was most helpful.
Marshall closes his book with a very moving story that I hope is not lost on American Indian readers of his book. The insights of his last chapter are so needed today.
"The Journey of Crazy Horse is the fourth book by Marshall that I have read and his works are gems. I highly recommend any and all of Marshall's books and I plan to continue reading his entire collection of works. He is a superb writer and captures the reader. He was also featured in the film productions "How the West was Lost" and the PBS special "The Native Americans."
Mr. Marshall, never put that pen down!
Too lacking in analysis and references .......2007-09-03
This book is too lacking in the analysis of Crazy Horse's political and military strategy, it lacks references (its prime source is Indian word-of-mouth) and it is too much an hagiography. Nevertheless a decent introduction to the man and, much more importantly, his predicament.
THE JOURNEY OF A GREAT MAN ! (the life, loves, and battles of Crazy Horse).......2007-08-27
The Journey Of Crazy Horse (2005) is a biography/history of the Lakota Sioux legend, from the perspective of a Lakota Sioux historian and storyteller. Joseph M. Marshall III was raised on a Sioux Indian reservation and Lakota is his first language. He has collected an oral history passed from Lakota generation to Lakota generation, and combined that history with his own research on this fascinating, but reticent warrior, to give us a personal look at a man who has been a symbol of pride and excellance for generations of Native Americans. It's all here, from his lively and free boyhood days in the North American plains to the Battle Of The Little Big Horn and his eventual capture and death at the end of a soldier's bayonet. Light Hair, as he was originally known (he later took the name Crazy Horse, also his father's name) was a man who lived with a wounded heart. He had lost his birth mother as a young child, and the love of his life, Black Buffalo Woman, was politically influenced into marrying another, who she eventually left for Crazy Horse, but returned to the marriage when violence erupted over the matter. As the white man advanced from the east, and made his way into Sioux territory, some of the Indians exchanged their way of life for "land", cattle, and other goods that were offered to them. Crazy Horse would have nothing to do with it, and resisted that comprimise right up to the very end of his life. Revered by his own people and the whites as a great and courageous warrior, his humility and compassion were also legendary. With colorful images and authentic emotional narrative, The Journey Of Crazy Horse reads like a historical novel, but also provides an education in the the life of this remarkable 19th century Lakota Sioux warrior and his people, as they bravely fought to maintain their way of life. A book everyone should read.
A great biography.......2007-05-15
Mr. Marshall's history of Crazy Horse and the upheavals in the Lakota culture make for a spell-binding book. It is very interesting to view history from a Lakota perspective, as opposed to the white-written history books many of us were force-fed in school. The people who lived on the plains in the 1800's were not the "savage and untamed" monsters depicted in many history books, just as the white forefathers (Washington, Jefferson, etc.) were not the "holy saints" they were portrayed as being. Mr. Marshall shows how words can be twisted to suit an agenda; Indians killing white soldiers in battle was called a "massacre," while white soldiers killing women and children in cold blood was called a "great victory." Indians defending their land and way of life were said to be "uprising," while whites invading the Indian lands were said to be "taming the wilderness." Be prepared to have your eyes opened as you read this well-written and fascinating book!
WORDS CANNOT TELL HOW GOOD THIS IS.......2007-04-23
I don't listen to books on CDs preferring to read the book; but in this case my local library had only the CDs. Not only am I enjoying this book via CDs but I've ordered the hardcover copy for my home library.
To listen to this author read his own work is almost a magnetic experience: one is just drawn to what he has to say and the manner with which he says it.
I've read on the 'west' for years and have always wanted to hear the Indian viewpoint of many matters and can now do that. My major in college was anthropology and I have always felt the oral traditions from the plain's people offer a much closer truth than many of our own historians have either sought or achieved.
This is an excellant example of not only the truth of Crazy Horse but a collective insight into the Lakota people themselves. Just an excellent work deserving of all awards it may garner.
Semper Fi.

Book Description
Edgework brings together seven of Wendy Brown's most provocative recent essays in political and cultural theory. They range from explorations of politics post-9/11 to critical reflections on the academic norms governing feminist studies and political theory. Edgework is also concerned with the intellectual and political value of critique itself. It renders contemporary the ancient jurisprudential meaning of critique as krisis, in which a tear in the fabric of justice becomes the occasion of a public sifting or thoughtfulness, the development of criteria for judgment, and the inauguration of political renewal or restoration. Each essay probes a contemporary problem--the charge of being unpatriotic for dissenting from U.S. foreign policy, the erosion of liberal democracy by neoliberal political rationality, feminism's loss of a revolutionary horizon--and seeks to grasp the intellectual impasse the problem signals as well as the political incitement it may harbor.
