    Book Description

Michelangelo was acutely conscious of living in an age of religious crisis and artistic change, and for him the two issues were related. Michelangelo and the Reform of Art explores Michelangelo's awareness of artistic tradition as a means of understanding his relation to the profound religious uncertainty of the sixteenth century. Concentrating on Michelangelo's lifelong preoccupation with the image of the dead Christ, Alexander Nagel studies the artist's associations with reform-minded circles in early sixteenth-century Italy, and reveals his sustained concern over the fate of religious art.

        Book Description

This book, the sister publication to The Study of Dress History, is the first to detail the history of the collection, exhibition and museum interpretation of dress of all kinds. It examines the earliest European developments in dress history from the mid sixteenth century onwards, and explains the interest in dress collection and display both privately and in museums in Britain, France, the USA and Eastern Europe. Lou Taylor argues that only when women were permitted to be curators of dress within museums did the collection of all kinds of dress find its proper place in our museums of decorative arts, social history and ethnography. Chapters cover the current debates related to dress collecting in such institutions, including discussion of the return of sacred objects, the place of contemporary fashion within museums and issues of the commodification of collections and displays.

3 out of 5 stars George is great, but still misses sometimes..........2002-03-07

We all love parts of Star Wars, but why settle? For example, he could take a novel like Defenders of the Holy Grail and make it as magical as Lord of the Rings. His fantasies miss connections with the modern world His studio could be making real statements about the human condition instead of lightweight _______.

          5 out of 5 stars Highly Inspiring.......1999-08-08

This book gives you a sequence of events in Lucas' creative empire. It also contains interesting quotes from the man himself as well as other significant contributors to his work. It may come as a surprise to some of us that Lucas' goals are quite similar to our own; the only difference is that he has a very strong will to make it all come true.

Contained in this book are his projects that touched many who will never imagine the same way again.

5 out of 5 stars TRUE JEDI MASTER.......1999-03-31

George gave us visions of a future never before seen - this book is a chronicle of his works. The full page images and stories behind the ideas will leave you with a better sense of how this incredible universe came to be.

          A GREAT BOOK!

4 out of 5 stars An in-depth look at the man behind the mogul.......1998-08-02

George Lucas: The Creative Impulse is a great book which gives the reader a view over George Lucas and his life and filmography. The book introduces in sections Lucas' "early years", his films and also briefly his companies (ILM, Skywalker Sound, LucasArts) and also takes to a tour around Skywalker Ranch.

Although there isn't as much behind-the-scenes info I would have hoped for, the book was really interesting with lots of big photographs taken during the production of Lucas' films and other neat stuff.

          Great book.

                    Book Description

Bowled Over harks back to an earlier era when folks swarmed to gleaming bowling emporiums for fine cuisine, fancy cocktails, and stiff competition. Positively packed with bowling memorabilia and anecdotes, Bowled Over covers bowling s history, fashion, champs, surly pinboys, lady bowlerettes, and alley architecture along with important tips on scoring and alley etiquette. Featuring over 100 vintage images culled from the Inter-national Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame s archives, this colorful compendium is a punchy tribute to the ever-popular tradition and culture of bowling.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Bowled but not quite over........2002-11-17

A pleasant enough short history of bowling, giving just enough detail to be interesting without getting too technical though in some cases I would have appreciated more information, in particular the development of the automatic pinsetter (surely the one item that pushed the sport into the big-time) and the architecture of bowling lanes, the work of the architectural company Powers, Daly & DeRosa helped pull in the customers to the flamboyant lanes of the fifties.

The book is a neat square shape (seven by seven inches) and well produced with over a hundred pictures but before you order your copy you have to know that (amazingly) none of the pictures have captions! Some of them clearly are just graphics to help the design along but I counted fifty-two that really should have some explanation for the reader, for instance page eleven shows actor Telly Savalas just about to bowl, when was it taken and where? Page forty-seven shows the outside of the streamline Tower Bowl in San Diego (designed by Charlie Lee) I think readers should be told this in a caption, page ninety-six has a bowling championship in progress, where, when? I'm surprised that the publisher did not pick up this rather fundamental flaw in the books presentation.

A book I enjoyed more than 'Bowled Over' is 'Bowl-O-Rama' by Thomas Steele, essentially a visual history with hundreds of pictures (all with captions) and short introductions to the nine chapters. Oh and the cover shows part of a bowling ball with three holes punched right though the stiff cardboard.

                    5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2002-11-02

I love this snappy, informative book with its vintage photographs, evocative memorabilia, great layout, and fact-filled text. The authors cover all aspects of the bowling phenomenon -- from the history of the sport to fashion, technology, and
architecture, and helped me understand the important social and cultural role of this sport. Two things really stayed with me: the authors' ability to connect bowling to American social history; and the fantastic design. This book puts me in a great mood! Intelligently written -- without being high brow--and full of entertaining anecdotes, Bowled Over makes a great present for bowlers and fans of popular culture.

2 out of 5 stars this book isn't the best.......2006-08-30

My professor loves this book. I don't know why; makes me wonder if she ever read it the way a student would. This book makes its point early on, and the rest of the paragraphs you will read are nothing more than tedious example after tedious example. I found that I could get by without reading much more than the first few sentences of each section, stopping every so often to take note of a vocabulary word or a concept that has a better word to describe it. Even worse is I'm doubtful that I will get a single penny at buyback for this thing as McGraw-Hill decided to screw me over by publishing the 9th edition of this very tedious book. I'm betting that there won't really be any differences, save for the cover. This book is tedious at best. That's all there is to it. It tries to make communicating at work seem hard and tedious and at times it would seem it doubts the intelligence of the reader by having sappy quotes from people like Sam Walton and Donald Trump.

                    Book Description

A thrilling page-turner of epic proportions, Tom Reiss’s panoramic bestseller tells the true story of a Jew who transformed himself into a Muslim prince in Nazi Germany. Lev Nussimbaum escaped the Russian Revolution in a camel caravan and, as “Essad Bey,” became a celebrated author with the enduring novel Ali and Nino as well as an adventurer, a real-life Indiana Jones with a fatal secret. Reiss pursued Lev’s story across ten countries and found himself caught up in encounters as dramatic and surreal–and sometimes as heartbreaking–as his subject’s life.

I wanted to read this autobiography for two reasons: 1)I very much enjoyed the novel, 'Ali and Nino' by Essad Bey; and 2) I am fascinated with the history of the Caucuses and Central Asia.

Tom Reiss thoroughly explores Bey's life from his childhood in Azerbaijan during the most turbulent times of the early 20th century, but Mr. Reiss goes beyond that, and depicts the times and events. The accounts of Russian history and the Bolshevik revolution are fascinating. Later on, when Bey lives in Berlin, the book tends to slow a bit. Overall, 'The Orientalist' is a fascinating account of European history during the rise of Bolshevism and fascism.Taxi to Tashkent: Two Years with the Peace Corps in Uzbekistan

3 out of 5 stars Interesting tidbits but not a truly great tale.......2007-06-09

The book feels a bit like watching 'Pop up video'. The tale is of a man trying to shed his identity in a world that hates who he is. The story is interspersed with a secret history of the early 20th century. About half the book has little to do with the central character. Its more a history of the time in which he lives.
What's appealing about the book is that there is a lot of history that I had no clue about. Jewish Orientalist history, about Stalin, Germany etc but the story about Leo Nussimbaum feels to me flawed. I don't understand why he deceided to be a writer. I don't understand what made him tick. He makes all sorts of strange decisions that the author cannot unravel.
An intersting book in bits but doesn't hold together as a biography.

                    1 out of 5 stars Fugetaboutit!.......2007-04-30

Lots of interesting lore, lots of speculations about the crisis of the modern world, but actually very little about Lev Nussimbaum, the so-called Orientatlist. How did he get his knowledge, considering how marginal his education was? What did his books really offer the reader, since very few have ever had the opportunity to read him? Why did he stay in Fascist Europe? Why did he die at 35 or 36 and look in a contemporary photo like a man of seventy? There is much here that is not answered. There is no discussion of what value Orientalism has. I suspect that the author has simply gotten carried away with eccentricities without ever having determined what value all this material may have.

When Leon Trotsky allegedly asked his son, "who is Essad Bey (aka Lev Nussimbaum)" what is this supposed to signify? Perhaps if Nussimbaum had asked his father "who is Leon Trotsky" we would have learned something of value.

5 out of 5 stars Best book read in years.......2007-03-20

This book is fascinating, not only because of the life of the main character which is an incredible saga. But I found that I learned so much, each page is full of well researched information. It is a review of the the first half of the 20th Century, so rich with descriptions of the intellectual and historical context. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

                    5 out of 5 stars Identity Masks.......2007-01-15

This account of a man who lived a varied, varying life is well foretold by the subtitle. Essentially a story of one way to combat religous discrimination, it evolves into a strange, mysterious series of events where a Jew passes for Muslim. His life treks Asia Minor and Europe for the first half of the 20th century and the author captures it brilliantly. The best nonfiction I read this past year.

                        Book Description

In a book that challenges the most widely held ideas of why individuals engage in collective conflict, Russell Hardin offers a timely, crucial explanation of group action in its most destructive forms. Contrary to those observers who attribute group violence to irrationality, primordial instinct, or complex psychology, Hardin uncovers a systematic exploitation of self-interest in the underpinnings of group identification and collective violence. Using examples from Mafia vendettas to ethnic violence in places such as Bosnia and Rwanda, he describes the social and economic circumstances that set this violence into motion. Hardin explains why hatred alone does not necessarily start wars but how leaders cultivate it to mobilize their people. He also reveals the thinking behind the preemptive strikes that contribute to much of the violence between groups, identifies the dangers of "particularist" communitarianism, and argues for government structures to prevent any ethnic or other group from having too much sway.

Exploring conflict between groups such as Serbs and Croats, Hutu and Tutsi, Northern Irish Catholics and Protestants, Hardin vividly illustrates the danger that arises when individual and group interests merge. In these examples, groups of people have been governed by movements that managed to reflect their members' personal interests--mainly by striving for political and economic advances at the expense of other groups and by closing themselves off from society at large. The author concludes that we make a better and safer world if we design our social institutions to facilitate individual efforts to achieve personal goals than if we concentrate on the ethnic political makeup of our respective societies.

                            Book Description

An overarching ambiguity characterizes East Asia today. The region has at least a century-long history of internal divisiveness, war, and conflict, and it remains the site of several nettlesome territorial disputes. However, a mixture of complex and often competing agents and processes has been knitting together various segments of East Asia. In Remapping East Asia, T. J. Pempel suggests that the region is ripe for cooperation rather than rivalry and that recent "region-building" developments in East Asia have had a substantial cumulative effect on the broader canvas of international politics.

This collection is about the people, processes, and institutions behind that region-building. In it, experts on the area take a broad approach to the dynamics and implications of regionalism. Instead of limiting their focus to security matters, they extend their discussions to topics as diverse as the mercurial nature of Japan's leadership role in the region, Southeast Asian business networks, the war on terrorism in Asia, and the political economy of environmental regionalism. Throughout, they show how nation-states, corporations, and problem-specific coalitions have furthered regional cohesion not only by establishing formal institutions, but also by operating informally, semiformally, or even secretly.
