Cute comic!.......2007-08-06
Its a really cute comic... read it, buy it... you wont regret it. I love breaking it out on those rainy days.
Dirge at his best.......2007-05-17
Yet again something wonderfully twisted from a talented artist/writer. Been a fan of Roman Dirge for years and everything thing he does just brings a smile to my face. With his usual dark and twisted yet somehow innocent style of humor and story telling his book of poems is a quick read but something you'll spend hours reading again and again. I highly recommend Something at the Window is Scratching.
Scratching is good!.......2007-02-13
This book is just a collection of funny and a bit morbid poems by Roman Dirge. He has his own style of writing just as he does with illustrating. The pictures in the book go right along with the strange bedtime poetry. If you like Roman Dirge, you'll want to add this to your collection.
Peter the Pirate Squid.......2004-07-29
The book is worth every nickle simply because it is delightfully absurd!
Piggies! I meant piggies...........2004-05-12
That's the entertaining part of this book, searching for the hidden piggies. Not bunnies, as I mistakenly mentioned earlier. Carry on.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book.......2004-08-09
This book gives an insightful perspective on how we judge ourselves and how we can change from the inside out. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to take charge and redefine how they see themselves and to get inspired!
A Great Book - Fun and Inspiring.......2004-08-01
This book is very informative and entertaining. You are reading and laughing and all of a sudden you realize "hey I can do this, I don't have to be a doormat" I really enjoyed it and it has made me look at things in a different light, I will now take care of myself more and not feel guilty about it!
For Women who are too busy.......2004-07-29
This is an easy to read book with many very helpful tips that can contribute to helping you to change your self perception and raise your self esteem. The author is also blessed with a wonderful sense of humor that makes the book entertaining, while you are learning at the same time. It's a great book for yourself and to give to your girlfriends as gifts. What most of us busy, multi-tasking women need is something easy to read, but beneficial, thought provoking and inspriational at the same time, because we don't have enough time to sit still and read often. This small and helpful book is in that category.
Divahood Here I come!.......2004-07-28
I loved the readability of this book. It was just the right length and its as if the author was talking just to me. I felt she knew exactly how I was feeling.
I have read other self-help and spiritual type books which included exercises. They always seem to be overwhelming. The exercises included in this book were judiciously chosen and this enhances the book's value to those of us who want to improve.
I have recommended the book to one person who wanted to start her own business and another who wanted to move on in her job.
This book is also a great reinforcer to those of us who have taken Merci Miglino's seminar. It kept up my energy when I left the Doormat to Diva workshop to make the changes I wanted in my life.
I've been Diva-tized!.......2004-07-26
This is a straight forward, direct and very funny look at the divine nature of divas! great gift for women in transition...or reaching milestone birthdays!

Book Description
American culture after the end of World War II has been characterized by an abiding pessimism most clearly manifested in the film noirs of the period. Mike Chopra-Gant challenges this "noir and Zeitgeist" reading and proposes that the view of American cinema and society it develops relies on a retrospective re-imagining of the era, based on the erroneous promotion of selected movies. His vigorous revisionist account of the films and culture of the period also challenges traditional approaches to genre, to masculinity and the family, by focusing on key themes in the most popular films in terms of box office revenues, including Best Years of Our Lives, Night and Day, Scarlet Street and Gilda.

New View of the Post War Movies.......2006-06-22
The commonly held opinion about American movies in the years 1946-50 is that they reflect a culture that was having a crisis of masculinity, a perception of widespread corruption in society and a prevailing sense of gloom, pesimism and cynicism.
In this book Chopra-Gant presents a revisionist view of the films of this period. He argues that the wrong films were studied to generate this view. Instead he researched the most popular films (in terms of revenue generated) of 1946 and in these films the tone is quite different. Many of these films instead show the triumph of American beliefs - democracy, classlessness and individualism.
One point he discusses is the fall off in revenue spent on movies after 1947. He does not supply a reson for this, but I suspect that it had nothing to do with the movies, instead it had to do with the start of the baby boom. Younger people, and dating people tend to go to the movies a lot more than married people who now have an infant at home.

Useful research book.......1999-03-26
This book helped me quite a lot in researching the Pifarri (a rather obscure subject). It is rather dryly written, as are most books like it, but it contains excellent information. I wouldn't go so far as to consider it bedside reading, but for a student of the field, it is worth considering.
Book Description
Puzzlers love to "fill-in-the-blank." Puzzlers love pop culture. Puzzlers love Henry Hook. Put them all together and you have a book that's irresistible.
The latest offering from the amazingly creative Henry Hook is really a book of fifty crosswords plus fifty "Who am I?" limericks. First, solve a brand-new Sunday-size crossword. Next, plug the appropriate answers into the limerick at the top of the page. Finally, read the limerick and guess who! And to prevent solvers from accidentally seeing the answer to another puzzle, the identities (and explanations) are presented in a special format.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent to Lessen the Fear.......2007-09-23
I have been wanting to start a web-based design business, but some of the details are a bit scary to me. A friend recommended that I get this book, and he was right! It's packed full of very useful information in a highly understandable manner and language.
The business aspects helped me to clarify some of the confusing aspects of starting a business, and the examples of contracts is worth the price of the book alone.
I'd totally recommend this book to anyone looking into it for the first time. If you've already dabbled in a home business before, you may find this a bit too basic.
Excellent, Cost Effective Resource.......2007-07-20
About a year ago, I bought Sitepoint's Web Design Business Kit, by Brenden Sinclair. At the time, I thought it was a good read. After reading Jim Smith's book on the same topic, I look back on the Business Kit and find it to be quite superficial. Sinclair focuses more on outsourcing and working on the business as opposed to working in it. Smith presents his information from a "man of many hats" point of view. As it applies to my situation, Smith's book is more useful.
I would hire Jim as a business consultant in a heart beat. I wish I would have read this book a long time ago. Do you know what can happen if you disable someone's site for non-payment? What if you register a client's domain name in your name, and then there's a domain name disupute from another organiztion... want to be in the middle of that? What about those of you who work as subcontracting agents? Do your contracts protect from issues between the original contractor and the stakeholder? This is just a taste of what you'll learn in this book... not HTML, CSS, PHP, C++, frameworks, etc.
Read The Cover!!!.......2007-07-04
This book is not to teach you how to design a great looking website!
The book was written to give you some guidance starting a web design business in your home. I found the book does just what it says it will.
If you are thinking of going into this business, part time or full time, the book is a great starting point to give you an idea of what to expect.
I enjoyed the reading and recommend it.
I'm really glad I purchased this book!.......2007-05-11
As someone who is just starting up a web development business, I have found this book to be invaluable. The author is honest and thorough in his presentation of what it takes to start and run a successful business. He includes many helpful suggestions such as how to write a client contract, how to develop a business plan, how to market your business, and how to make a successful sales presentation.
Good TIPS on how to RUN your business.......2007-03-26
I bought this book at Barnes & Noble while looking for a book on how to run a small business, not necesarilly designed for a web design business but for that purpose. I already have enough experience on graphic and web design, and I've made a couple of websites friends. I just needed to know on how to turn that into an income.
If you're interested in running a web design business like I am, Jim Smith will give you all the advice you'll need; what to expect, what services are recommended to offer, how to attract clients, questions to ask on interviews if you decide to hire a staff, the ups and downs on running a web design company, and more - basically the insight into the web design business that I needed.
Checking into his company, I realized that the design aspect leaves a lot to wish for, but he DOES mention that he targets people who are new on the internet. Don't buy this book if you're looking on tips on how to make your website more attractive looking, if that's a big issue to you. There are pleny of books out there that teach you just that.
But if you're like me and you're interested in knowing everything you need to know in starting a web design business, then this book will be your bible. I recommend it.

THE BEGUILING MS. MONTGOMERY.......2007-01-27
I was too young to see Bewitched when it was on in the sixties, but I developed a crush on "Sam" in reruns, she was just so charming, sexy, and beautiful, I later saw her in a movie in which she played a woman that had been assaulted, I was like eight, and I was really upset, I mean my Sam was being beat up, but she was fantastic in the role, so different than her Bewiched part, then later on I saw her, in this movie that she played this shrew, she was mean as hell, and she was spectacular. This book is an odd mix of familar stories and it tries to get into what made this iconic woman tick..it's not a total success, Ms. Montgomery was a VERY private person and she gave very few interviews, I guess that comes from growing up with a famous father and her early huge success. At any rate, good read, but we really never understand the enigma that is Elizabeth Montgomery, but that is how she wanted it, it adds to her mystic I suppose.
Our Elizabeth.......2006-06-07
Elizabeth Montgomery is one of my idols and I'd always wished someone would write her biography. Now we have one...although I wouldn't call this book a biography in the traditional sense.
Elizabeth's story is told here in quotes, magazine articles and interviews previously given by Elizabeth and people who knew and worked with her. There are a great deal of interesting bits about Bewitched, especially obscure trivia that even diehard fans probably don't know, and some details about Elizabeth's ill-fated marriage to the odd actor Gig Young. This book also includes a lot of excellent photos of Elizabeth, many of which are from early in her career and before she became synoymous with Samantha.
I did learn a lot about my idol in reading this book, but because Elizabeth was a very private person, there are understandably a lot of holes that may never be filled.
Overall, I'm pleased with this book. True Elizabeth fans will like it too.

Elizabeth Montgomery: A Bewitching Life.......2005-10-04
For anyone interested in either Bewitched or Elizabeth Montgomery this book is a must. I just could not put it down.
Book Description
In a series of moving and provocative conversations, nine members of the Israeli Defense Force tell why they refused to serve in the West Bank and Gaza. The "Refuseniks" describe their risky moral decision against the background of what is perhaps the most volatile conflict in the world today: the Israeli-Palestine struggle. Their individual choices and their collective activism have generated intense debate in Israel and the international community, from the leading Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz to a segment on 60 Minutes.
In a sociocultural mosaic of the refusenik movement and the political context in which it arose, these men recount their individual family backgrounds and beliefs. Dedicated to the welfare of their country and its religious heritage, they outline their concerns for the future of Israel. As they tell their stories of personal struggle, they also raise the disturbing and highly controversial issue of human rights abuses in the occupied territories.
These searching personal accounts of existential choice offer new perspectives on some entrenched ideas about the situation in the Middle East. The testimony in Breaking Ranks is essential background for a full understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The refuseniks illuminate the inner workings of Israeli society by challenging what it most reveres, offering a new moral framework that reinforces a sense of belonging to Israel. In this time of grave crisis in the Middle East, with no solution in sight to repair the utter collapse of the peace process, these voices offer a message of hope in their commitment to their society and nation

Please read this book.......2007-08-17
I am a Muslim and the Quran says that those who believe in the one God will eventually be in heaven but those who did not follow they way of Islam are possibly going to be in Hell for a time. I hope the soldiers in this book will be spared hellfire. As I read it, I was amazed that I never heard of it before. These soldiers and their refusal to participate have been hidden from the public. They were on a segment of 60 minutes, but you will not find that video anywhere on the Internet, including Youtube and their website. Go ahead and try to find it.
In their own words, they say that Israel was "built on militarism racism" and "Many Jews have lost their Jewish souls" and The judges who order houses to be demolished are "prostltutes to the legal system" and about terrorism, the soldier in ch7 says boldly "We have sown the seed's, grown them, and nurtured them." He later says with courage "I refuse to be a terrorist in my tribes name." I am sure this book is banned in Israel but I wish that all Americans could read it at least once. If it was hard for me to find it, then I know the majority of concerned Americans dont know it exists.
Telling the truth.......2005-09-25
Several courageous Israeli reservists who have refused to serve in the illegally occupied Palestinian territories captured by Israel in 1967 tell why they have chosen not to serve. They are part of a group of several hundred Israeli reservists who have said that they will serve within Israel's 1967 borders but that they will no longer fight beyond those borders to "dominate, expel, starve and humiliate an entire people." Many of these brave reservists spent time in Israeli prisons for their principled actions.
The reservists speak of the brutalization of the Palestinian people by the Israeli army, a brutalization which in turn brought about the anger of the Palestinian people toward them and toward Israeli Jews. They speak of the humiliation faced by both young and old Palestinians at the ever present checkpoints when young Israeli soldiers would torment Palestinians by tearing up their required identification papers, making them sit in the hot sun without shelter, sending them back home even when they had a permit to visit the doctor or go to school or occasionally beating them just for sport.
This book is a real eye opener for those who get their information about Israel and the occupation from the main stream corporate press. It serves to help readers understand more of the Israeli/Palestine conflict and it is also important because it shows that there is a segment of Israeli society that knows that the occupation is reprehensible and unconscionable. They have been there.
Courage to Refuse.......2003-10-10
Thought provoking essays that explore the conscience and consciousness of each `refusenik's soul searching, and their journey to refusal. To date 550 IDF soldiers have either refused, or pledged to refuse serving in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. That is a huge number!
The stories these soldiers tell, will often give you a glimpse into both Israeli and Palestinian society, showing how people's perception are shaped, and mindsets nearly paralyzed by governments and leaders ( on both sides ) that have cultivated only fear and hate over the years, why it must end, and how.
The author throws out tough questions to them, challenging both their patriotic duty and moral convictions. I feel they answer with great clarity and conviction. All the men in this book are well educated, and articulate. All have served in the occupied territories at one point or another, and have either committed or witnessed first hand, lets call them brutalities. They all are deeply devoted to Israeli society and believe that "the best way to serve their society is not to perpetuate its injustices"
There are some stark warnings to heed in this book. Many times American dogma and mindset after 9-11 and the `War on Terror' is cited as an analogy to give reference to the phenomenon of jingoistic thinking taking place.
This book was written before the recent refusal of 27 Israeli pilots who refused to take part in targeted assassinations, claiming that they resulted in civilan deaths, and that "the black flag of illegality is waving."
Do not think for a moment that the decision to refuse came easily for these men. It did not. Many will tell you it took years to shake off the deeply entrenched mindset that has gripped Israeli society, and is always being fed by a media that is one sided, and a government that is short-sighted.
Whether you agree with these soldiers or not, every American should read this book, because by virtue of our American citizenship alone, makes all of us a part in this struggle, whether we want to be or not. The time is now to truly understand the issues as they exist today, and reevaluate what America's moral role ought to be.
Life Changing.......2003-07-15
This book has catapultited me into a new level of consciousness!
I have been waiting for a book to educate me on this topic and not only have I been educated, but moved to look into activism on this issue. I am neither Jewish nor very knowledgeable in politics. This book is right to the point and I found myself totally engrossed. The men in this book are awesome and I am proud to walk the planet with them. They are educated, brave, compassionate and passionate. I hope that you not only read Breaking Ranks, but go to the website afterwards and become involved in some way.
Book Description
Avoiding the traps of sensational political expose and specialized scholarly Orientalism, Carl Ernst introduces readers to the profound spiritual resources of Islam while clarifying diversity and debate within the tradition. Framing his argument in terms of religious studies, Ernst describes how Protestant definitions of religion and anti-Muslim prejudice have affected views of Islam in Europe and America. He also covers the contemporary importance of Islam in both its traditional settings and its new locations and provides a context for understanding extremist movements like fundamentalism. He concludes with an overview of critical debates on important contemporary issues such as gender and veiling, state politics, and science and religion.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing better.......2005-11-19
This is a splendid book for anyone who is trying to understand Islam. No other book situates Muslim concerns in global contexts and thoughout history. The author is a master at clear writing. In my experience when I have recommended this book to people, they come back with smiles on their faces and a new view of today's world. It does not get any better than this for students and the open minds outside the academy. Clean your glasses and read it again, fellow reviewers.
The Same Old Song.......2005-10-25
I began to read this book because I thought it would help clear up some of my western baggage (choke, choke). After all, how can we in the West even begin to understand Muhammad. But lets mention the good parts first. Ernst does mention the numerous accomplishments of Islam in the fields of medicine, art and spiritualism (the Sufis). He pays particular attention to the influence of the Greeks on Islamic thought. He does not say, but hints, that the writers of the Quran were probably influenced by Greek philosophers.
However, this book is not really about Muhammad at all as one can not go through any chapter with seeing the following 2 words: 1.colonialism and Orientalism. Sure, one can read that Muhammad is seen as an ongoing model for "ethics, law, family live, spirituality not anticipated 1,400 yrs ago" (p.74). But where is the authors historical honesty. Is he talking of the same man who allowed his men to have their way with captive slave women and stated that: "the majority of people in hell are women." Later Ernst complains that Europeans (again)were cynical of Muhammads elavation of Mecca as the spiritual center of their faith. Certainly, he insists, Muhammad was never so gauche as to have political/relgious motives (that's to colonial). This, despite historical evidence, during and after Muhammads life which indicate that Muhammad was a colonial crusader in his own way. Even his contemporaries noted that;"prophetism is finished and the empire is beginning." And it was after Muhammads death that Islamic theologians began to spread the rumors that the Bible was corrupt and that Jesus did not die on the cross but obtained a double to take his place-thus assuring Muhammad the title he always wished-The Final Prophet.
Thus the title of my review: It's the same old song. Islam is no danger to Western thought or Christianity. If it appears so it is because colonialism has penetrated the Muslim mind and they are unable to return to the great old days under the Prophet.
Less about Islam then about how to start looking.......2005-10-13
I was recommended this book by a professor of comparitive religion from a respected private school near where I live. I had mentioned to him that I was nearly totally ignorant of Islam, but that I was extremely curious, given the recent history of the clash between east and west. While this book didn't delve deeply into the actual structure of Islam, it brought to light several things to consider before starting an indepth study. I'm very glad that I read this book before starting on my quest to understand Islam, because it helped me to understand the baggage that I'm bringing, just by being an American who watches western media and went to a western school.
Read it for yourself.......2005-09-06
This book is written by one of the world's foremost scholars in Islam and Sufism. He delivers a balanced approach to the topic which cannot be said for the other reviewers of this book. I suspect they never read it.
The perfect introduction to Islam.......2005-03-21
"Following Muhammad," the way Ernst sees it, is a book that fills a special niche. Although solid scholarship on Islam is available, it is often rendered inaccessible by impenetrable prose and circulated in very narrow academic circles through specialized journals. On the other hand, commercial publications approach the topic from the sensationalist angles and too often betray ideological attack agendas. What Ernst tries to do in "Rethinking Islam in the Contemporary World" is to offer the lay reader a balanced, unimpeachably scholarly but thoroughly accessible, fair-minded but critical introduction to the religion of roughly one fifth of the world's population. By extension, the book sheds light on many of the references, and some of the misperceptions, that have become common currency in the rhetoric of the clash of civilizations.
If September 11 influenced the presentation of the book, it is "to highlight how we have constructed the notion of religion in recent history around the ideas of competition and confrontation, since all too often this modern world-imperial concept of religion is allowed to pass unexamined." For too many people, confrontation is the only way they have heard Islam described, he points out, and the culture of mass media today tends to create the notion that the present is the only time worth considering. Ernst therefore devotes the first part of the book to the interplay between religion and history across the ages, and traces the evolution of the long relationship between Islam and the West from the Middle Ages through colonial times to the present. Ernst, who is not Muslim, does not engage in apologetics on behalf of any religion, but rather tries to examine images and their reverse, or negative: each civilization tends to project on the perceived rival its own prejudices and motivations.
Another section of the book examines Islam in terms of the modern concept of religion and gives an overview of the fundamental sources for Muslims: the Quran or scripture, and the teachings of the prophet Muhammad. From this Ernst moves on to the concept of Islamic religious ethics deriving not only from these authoritative texts but also from philosophical inquiry, including the Greek tradition. In his exposition Ernst hopes to provide the reader with independent and appropriate tools to understand the contemporary, and often ill-informed and inflammatory, debate about Islam.
The book's outstanding readability lies in the choice of the interpretative essay as the basic form for each chapter. Despite, or perhaps because, of his stellar academic credentials, the author deliberately eschews the "blind them with science" approach many academics take to impress their ivory tower peers with the impenetrability of their prose. Footnotes and glossaries are kept to a minimum.
Tellingly, one of the goals Ernst sets for this book can seem deceptively modest, by his own admission: to restore full, three-dimensional human complexity to well over a billion people homogenized and caricaturized in the eyes of the West in a manner wholly unacceptable if it were applied to any other religion, race or ethnicity. The fact that this seemingly modest goal is considered so controversial reinforces the timeliness of this book.
