Book Description
Dazzling treasures illuminate women's lives through 3,000 years of ancient Egypt.
Customer Reviews:
an attractive book for everyone.......2000-06-16
Ancient Egyptian art was the star attraction of the Mediterranean world for 3000 years, only for some of it to be transported to various museums across the world. This book examines those scenes in over 25 American museums as well as private collections which serve to shed light on the role of Ancient Egyptian women in their society. Objects such as mummy cases, coffins, statues and other sacred items also hold much information. The book contains essays by Egyptologists Janet H. Johnson, Catherine H. Roehrig and Betsy M. Bryan. A chronological index, map, beautiful photos, bibliography and index have also been included. It is an excellent book, recommended for all serious students and scholars to have in their private libraries.

Real Estate Investing For Dummies - I am the Dummie for Buying this Book!!!.......2007-02-23
I am embarassed that I bought this book. It was the worst "pamphlet" I have ever bought. 1st of all the writing is huge, obviously they did not have enough content to make a book. Then they have 2-3 pages in each "chapter" that just have lines on them for the reader to write in their own notes. There was nothing of value in the book. They say menial things such as buy a duplex, live in one half and rent the other half out. In 20-30 years you will have paid off both sides and made some money -- duh!!! Oh yeah, if you need renters, put an ad in the paper --- brilliant. To protect yourself, have the renter sign a lease ---- einstein! Unless you don't know what a duplex is or you are dumber than dumb, stay away from this "pamphlet". By the way, I have a good "like new" copy of this for sale -- wanna buy it?

READ BEFORE BUYING -- It's OKAY but other books were better.......2006-11-11
I think some of the content here is relevant, but there's a lot that isn't. The Dummies book would be better, or read up on investing with Investing Without Losing (ISBN 0978834607 NOT on amazn, other stores)
Try another book.......2006-08-08
As many of the other reviewers have noted. The author is more focused on being a discount agent in her private practice. She is also is very focus on the technical aspects of real estate and real estate law. It is like taking the real estate exam all over again. I was not looking for hours of useless information like in liscensing school. I was hoping she was going to share really solid techniques to make more money but alas they where limited.
I would recommend Success as a Real Estate Agent for Dummies by Dirk Zeller. It is well constructed and packed with how to's and systems to increase your income. His insights into prospecting, lead follow up, time management and sales presentations is outstanding. A truly must read for any agent. Save you money on this book and invest it into the "original" guide the Dummies book.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Success as Real Estate Agent.......2006-07-17
I thought this book was very educational on the basics of real estate. How to get started, what a single day in real estate would be like and much more. If you are considering becoming a real estate agent, this book is a must read to make sure that is what you want to do.
I feel like an idiot for buying it.......2006-02-27
I have recently become licesed and atained both a sales person and a brokers license. I thought the advice on how to pass the state exam was rubbish... here is the best advice ...study till you know the material and then take the test.
The rest of the book was amaturish at best and I will just donate it to our local vets on the next charity drive
Terrific book!.......2006-02-18
This book is just what I needed! I took the course and the test on my own without a sponser so I didn't even know how to approach an office. This book helps explain it and shows you how the business ought to be run.

Customer Reviews:
Broad overview, poor on detail- a true newbie's book.......2004-12-31
Anyone seeking to enter the world of commercial real estate will likely not benefit much from the Vault Guide to Real Estate. The information it contains is largely an overview and description of the culture of the industry. In my own research, I strongly believe (having been through the process of finding a commercial real estate job) that most of this information can be gleaned from a one hour conversation with almost anyone in the business. If you are extremely new to the field (i.e. know almost nothing about it) then this book could prove helpful.
Unlike the Vault financial guides, this resource does not go into the basic real estate terms and calculations that almost everyone in the field should know (NOI, Capitalization Rates, Competitive Analysis, RE loan terms, vacancy calculations, lease analysis, operating expense ratios, property valuation, etc.). In fact, I would recommend the Vault finance guides over this text, even for real estate- you will be better prepared for your interviews.
Anyone serious about the field will need to learn the numbers from another resource, possibly a CCIM course, "Real Estate Finance and Investments" or "The Real Estate Game". Again, the Vault book gives a a nice "soft" overview of the industry, but lacks the detailed substance necessary to understand how the real estate business works from a practitioner's standpoint.
To be fair, the book has some good suggestions on how to get a foot in the door in the business, etc. Nonetheless, you will not (by a long shot) be prepared for a real estate interview by reading this book alone. For an easy and fast introduction to the field it's a decent start.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT BOOK FOR REAL ESTATE PLANNING.......2002-07-21
Even though another reviewer said this is not good for a new agent, I disagree. Firstly, it is my Broker's favorite and he has built a successful business using it. Secondly, IT SHOWS YOU HOW TO FIGURE PROFIT AN LOSS ON ANY GIVEN REAL ESTATE "MARKET" OR "FARM", something no other book explains this way. Once you know how much revenue a given area could produce, then you can pick the best areas to concentrate in. Since we all have to focus on a few areas or farms, this book gives a great way to choose the best farms to work on.
Because of this formula, I am able, as a new agent, to not waste my time on unprofitable markets. Although it is not just for beginners, this book is a good one to start with and it will grow with you as your career grows.

For experienced agents only.......2001-09-28
Being a new real estate agent I brought this book with the hope that it would help me build my new business. I was wrong. This book mainly talks about looking at your past few years of realestate sales and changing your program using your past data into a better program. Utterly useless for the beginning agent. Carla Cross has a very good title writer for her books, since i brought her another one of her books in vain.
Solid Planning Guide.......2000-10-11
Even if you appreciate the importance of planning your business -- a MUST -- this guide is a very good resource to get you started. Much better for the experienced agent than a new licensee.

Beautifully done!.......2007-09-05
This book is so raw with honesty and emotion... Truly an inspiration to anyone who has been through tough times, to anyone who has had a close friendship, to anyone who has lost a loved one.
Short and Sweet.......2006-10-03
Don't look for a Pulitzer-worthy biography here. This is an "as told to" book that reads very much as though Jack Klugman were sitting on a talk-show couch and telling the host about his friendship with Tony Randall. It's also on the slight side. The 50 or so photos are huge and I finished reading the text in an evening.
That said, it is a touching story about two consummate actors who came together to give television and the stage some of its greatest performances, and who truly admired and supported each other during their relationship. There are a couple of distractions: specifically, a completely extraneous listing of the plays and casts through the history of Randall's National Actors Theater, and a Q&A interview with Randall's widow which becomes a little disturbing when it dwells on the differnce in their ages (50 years!) and the fact that his children now have to grow up without him because he was around 80 when they were born.
But it reaches its peak when Klugman talks about his devastating bout with throat cancer and how Randall almost single-handedly pulled him out of it and gave him back a career. There is also some great trivia (such as the fact that The Odd Couple was actually based on the real-life living situation of Neil Simon's brother and his roommate, and that the brother was the one who originally began working it into a play).
If you love the Odd Couple (I'm an unabashed addict myself) you won't be able to resist this inside look at the chemistry between two truly superb comic actors. And the unique DVD of out-takes makes it worth the purchase price. Not to mention that a portion of the proceeds benefit the National Actors Theater, Tony Randall's lifelong dream.
Thanks, Jack.
The power beyond friendship!.......2006-08-15
Bravo Jack!! Bravo!! A most fitting tribute borne out of an almost lifelong friendship between two men that was pure, honest, and totally lacking in pretension.
I am sure that many of us are in friendships that have witnessed incredible moments of profound glory and profound sadness. Moments that either made or broke the bond that the years have witnessed. For the ones that have survived the hardest of times, this book is the spoken word of how that type of the friendship prevailed and how the energy between people can weather the conflict. There is no confusion on Mr. Klugman's feelings for Mr. Randall; it isn't a book that serves any other purpose other than to praise Tony Randall and talk about his deep admiration for him and their friendship.
Jack Klugman is the epitome of the Oscars of the world and therefore Mr. Randall was the Felix. Two people were never better suited for their roles in real life and in reel life; they were born for "The Odd Couple" and for each other. It is an incredible story of how they were chosen for the roles despite who was initially scoped out; that they were selected is as Felix once said, "la forza dell destino!"(the power of destiny).
Mr. Klugman gives you insight into how these two legends arrived in the world of stage and screen and TV. That's where I felt cheated because I wanted more; I wanted more and more and more of any detail that he could give. More stories of the times that were swirling during their up and coming experiences and what it felt like to be there. I wanted more details of their show and the minutia of what it was like to be in the writers rooms; stories of the guest stars and directors and producers of the show and all the problems and frustrations that they faced. What was it like to work with so many personalities? Howard Cosell? Jack Soo? Bille Jean King? The list goes on of all the greats that were guests on their show.
I grew up on this show, as did many of my generation, and we loved it. I remember the show getting switched all the time to different times and nights but somehow I always found it. I loved a little of Felix and a little of Oscar but I loved both of them alot.
The things that we didn't know about Jack and Tony were wonderful tidbits that Mr. Klugman gives you such as their aggravating habits that irritated the other. Tony's bawdy humor (as an aside, prepare yourself for the story of Tony Randall and the theater story of "The Odd Couple" and toilet paper!). Read about Jack's continuous struggle with the throat cancer that changed his feelings about alot of things in life and how it brought him and Tony even closer than before. Tony's desire to start a theater company that rivaled all others. You come away wishing for more, but very glad to have gotten to know this much.
The book has a lovely introduction by Garry Marshall and a foreward by Jack's son; there is also an interview with Mr. Randalls second wife Heather, who is a very kind a gracious woman. The show made history for us. A classic was created and a whole new generation of people are finding this out. The best part of this book is that included is a DVD that has some of the outtakes from the series. Talk about funny!! How many times have I seen an episode and wondered how they filmed it without breaking up.............they did.....many times. What we saw was the end result, but what a hilarious ride while trying to get there!! You will just love it and you'll come away wanting so much more!! I hope that the heads of ABC or Paramount Studio's get their minds moving and produce DVDs for us to purchase, with ALL the scenes and footage. We are patiently waiting.........and waiting...........and waiting.
This is a short read which you can finish in about 2-3 hours. And with the DVD, it will wrap it all up for you. I guarantee that you will be wanting the series DVDs after this, and maybe think about sending a little letter to encourage those folks at the studios to hurry it up. Enjoy it all, courtesy of Mr. Klugman!!
Oh how I miss Felix's honk............2006-06-04
I just want to say one thing, after reading this book and watching the dvd of bloopers, I wrote a love letter to Jack Klugman to tell him how much he and Tony Randall ment to me. It was six pages long, and I figure even one of his horses would find my letter boring. But I had to do it.
If you ever saw these two men work together, this book will bring back a lot of wonderful memories. Read it!
Not Odd at All.......2006-04-02
Very entertaining book about two great actors who may have starred in "The Odd Couple" but are not odd at all. It's a story of friendship and how important it is to reach out to others and not focus on yourself or your problems. It's easy to read. Jack Klugman was great on that show and as "Quincy" too. He talks about Tony Randall's life, about his own life and those great years on "The Odd Couple". I couldn't put it down. I was surprised by the life lessons at the end and I will remember them. I highly recommend this fun to read book!

Two leading advocates of "conservative internationalism" in foreign policy assemble a like-minded group of deep thinkers in Present Dangers. According to the editors--Robert Kagan of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and William Kristol of The Weekly Standard--America's most significant threats come from within, rather than without. They worry that "the United States, the world's dominant power on whom the maintenance of international peace and the support of liberal democratic principles depends, will shrink its responsibilities and--in a fit of absentmindedness, or parsimony, or indifference--allow the international order that it created and sustains to collapse." As might be expected, the Clinton administration comes in for a thrashing on these pages. Ross H. Munro, an expert on China, writes: "However history judges [President] Clinton, the assessment of how his administration dealt with a rising China is certain to be harsh." In a chapter on Russia, Peter W. Rodman slams the Clintonites for "sentimentality," an "absurd doctrinal fetish" with arms control, and "an unwillingness to assert major American strategic interests and impose a penalty for harm done to them, lest the poor Russians feel hurt." There are other essays, too: Richard N. Perle on Iraq, Elliott Abrams on the Middle East, and William J. Bennett on the importance of morality and character in foreign policy. Clear thinking and straightforward writing mark each chapter.
As a whole, Present Dangers is an excellent primer on how a Republican foreign policy might look in the early years of the 21st century. But to be sure, a Republican foreign policy would not inevitably look this way; in one of the book's best sections, James W. Caesar examines the realist and isolationist schools of conservative thought and contrasts them with the view expressed throughout Present Dangers. Yet this is a strong and convincing call for "a strong commitment to vigorous American global leadership, to American power, and to the advancement of American democratic and free-market principles abroad." --John J. Miller
Book Description
In this book Robert Kagan and William Kristol have compiled twelve provocative and sobering essays from intellectuals, historians and policy-makers that challenge America to take a hard look at the coming crises in our foreign policy. It makes a case for repairing our depleted military, for a crash program of missile defense, and for a complete rethinking of whom our possible adversaries and real strategic partners are.
Customer Reviews:
The Neocon fantasy and delusion that has led us to this disaster.......2006-03-13
This otherwise awful book is important to read as an historical document so that we know how we got into the current mess in Iraq (and at home in America, with our mass deficit and debt). This book shows us the Neoconservative fantasy of creating a new century of pax Americana and benevolent imperialism, which was then put into operation after 9/11 and has since led us into the catastrophic disaster that is Iraq. Read this book and then never believe or listen to another word that these deluded Neocon ideologues say. Even Francis Fukuyama has now abandoned this crazed utopian fantasty. Read his new book after you've finished this piece of pure fiction
Regarding the "swine" you refer to..........2005-06-18
The last reviewer's idea that America should distance itself from "lesser cultures" is that of a person who clearly knows very little about American culture. Look, the book is crap in its ideology, but it's profound in its influence on the Bush administration's foreign policy. The wacko concept of global domination that is so prevalent in the mission of the "Project for a New American Century" makes about as much sense as the last reviewer would, were he foolishly given the opportunity to publish something beyond an Amazon.com review. However, you ought to read the book, and you really ought to think about it. Especially now, while the country is coming around to the idea that maybe, just maybe, interest in Iraqi and Irani regime change has been around far longer than W has been president. Anyway, I suggest you get out of your confused and dark little study, sir, and try to see the world around you before you die. If America is a precious jewel, you are actively tarnishing it.
Not worth buying or reading.......2004-01-17
While I disagree with much of the content of this book, that is not why you shouldn't buy this book. The reason not to buy is that this book is greatly out-dated. It was from before 9-11, and the neo-con perspective and focus on the world is now quite different.
Neoconserative fantasy foreign policy.......2003-03-02
The problem with neoconservative foreign policy is not that it is conservative and realistic but rather that it is liberal. The descriptions of problems here presented are real enough but the policies advocated in response are simply unrealistic precisely because they are imbued with a kind of moralizing and crusading liberalism that is not going to solve America's foreign policy problems but rather exacerbate them. Doubtless American intervention is required in many areas (and not in the form of social work as advocated by the UN and the Left), but proclaiming complex problems to be simple forces of good and evil that can be solved with the revolutionary and forceful imposition of democracy is classic Wilsonian liberal nonsense. It is simply a liberal-minded fantasy that you can import democracy and human rights to places that do not have the historical and institutional background to support it. It is true that a realisitic foreign policy that encourages intervention without the aid of some rhetorical flourishes of high-minded but naive and impractical principles will fail to be legitimized in the mind of the demos; however, to go so far as to actually implement these principles as policy is not only doomed to failure but will most certainly result in "blowback" against American interests. Much more prudence and the reassertion of realistic geopolitical strategies wrapped in the rhetoric of Wilsonian fantasy worlds is needed in place of the actual implementation of crusading liberal ideologies when it comes to foreign policy. We should expect much more especially from William Kristol, being the student of the great Machiavellian scholar Harvey Mansfield.
Absolutely a must-read: know your enemy!.......2003-02-14
This is undoubtedly one of the most important books on US foreign policy published in recent years and should be read by anyone who cares about the future of the United States and the rest of the world. This is the manifesto of "conservative internationalism" whose proponents, including many of the books authors, now infest the Bush administration and are his loudest ventriloquists. Here, then, is the current administration's strategic vision.
The basic argument is that the US needs to exercise world domination, here spun as "benevolent global hegemony" and that there are a number of external obstacles which stand in the way and must be dealt with. These are Iraq, Iran, North Korea, China, the Middle East peace process and an independent Europe. In its clear and reasoned enunciation of strategy and future plans, it both rivals and surpasses the later chapters of Mein Kampf. Here is the game plan which must be read to understand where these people intend to take the world next.
If we ignore the desirability of this mission, its feasibility (the cost in money, lives and freedom) certainly merits discussion, but here the book is thin, relying on fairy story assumptions (budget surpluses!!!) and wishful thinking.
The one distasteful aspect of the book is the attempt to wrap the entire endeavour in the cloak of "American morality", understood as protecting citizen's liberties. This is breathtaking stuff from accomplices in the most extensive attempt to incinerate the Constitution in recent history.
Stripped of its ideological air cover and romantic fantasies, this is still an important, timely and lively document since this is the future course of foreign policy which the Bush administration plans to pursue.
