An obsessed man in Hollywood.......2005-01-05
This is one of two books on William Friedkin, the other being the out-of-print Hurricane Billy, which is a straight biography.
Clagett's work is more academic, but it's one of the better examinations of a director and his work, heavily relying on the thoughts and ideas of the filmmakers (collaborators included). The analysis is done through the filter of the thoughts, ideas, intentions, and inventions of the filmmakers. It chronicles Friedkin's influences and work from his television days right on through to Rules of Engagement (this volume is a revised edition, as the original 1990 one only went to The Guardian). The chapters are smartly broken up into two parts: one is a detailed reading of the film, noting the details and imagery, the other is about the making of the film, with comments from Friedkin himself, the best part of the book, and with the many collaborators and players.
The result is a body of work that is consistent with Friedkin's personality and interests, if not consistent in overall quality. This serves as an excellent depiction of a strong personality, an obsessed man, in many ways, and the conflict of directing 'Hollywood' films but with an outlaw element. Friedkin's films do come off as consistent: there is a gritty, cynical attitude, and the endings are not typical--there's hardly a film in Friedkin's catalog that ends happily ever after.
Overall, an excellent book. Friedkin comes across loud and clear in this book: obnoxious, intelligent, honest, funny, and a total character who made some excellent films.
William Friedkin : Films of Aberration, Obsession and Realit.......2000-04-04
I'm looking forward to seeing his new movie "rules of engagement". I have thought him the greatest director in the world for a long time. And this book certify you that I'm not wrong. Now I know his effort of making many famous pictures I already saw, for exanple, The French Connection & The Exorcist. And this book answers my curiosity about his steps of filmmaking from his early days as a TV director to recent day. You'll see that he's not a lucky guy but a talented genius like Spilberg.

Funny and Serious.......2007-06-15
A must have for everyone turning "50". It makes a super gift!
Book Description
Drawing from his thirty years of entrepreneurial experience, his friendship with Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., and years of self-motivated study, Jack Kahl reveals the true spirit of leadership.
In 1971, Kahl made the investment of a lifetime: he bought a small, Cleveland company with revenues of just $800,000, renamed the company Manco, Inc., and began creating one of the most exciting business stories ever. By the time Kahl retired in 2000, the company was selling consumer products to the best retailers around the globe and had achieved revenues of more than $300 million. He sold the company in 1998, sharing 30% of the wealth - some $27 million - with his "partners," a title long held by every Manco employee. With Leading From the Heart, Kahl brings a unique and powerful lesson to all aspiring leaders: leadership begins with a choice - a choice to serve others that comes from the heart. But this choice is only the beginning. The servant leader must be of strong character and seek knowledge endlessly. Today's leaders must be creative, passionate, disciplined, and courageous people who still make the time to care for others. Like a coach calling from the sidelines, urging you to push your hardest and achieve your best, Kahl, with the aid of co-author Tom Donelan, has written a truly remarkable and inspiring book. Leading From the Heart is a succinct lesson - a must read for anyone who aspires to realize his or her potential as a leader, and for all who seek to unite ethics, integrity, and business savvy with the bottom line.
Customer Reviews:
An important balance.......2006-10-26
As the CEO of Manco, Inc., Jack Kahl is a very successful businessman. Now he can add accomplished author to his list, because Leading from the Heart is a great read that enlightened me to many effective leadership tactics. His idea of a servant leader is inspiring and provides leadership techniques that make people WANT to follow you. This book would be a great guide for any entrepreneur that wants to build a successful business based on good values. Everything in Leading from the Heart is relevant and applicable to real life situations. Kahl's ideas can lead you to a successful career and a happier life as well.
Impressive Book, I'd Reccommed It To Anyone.......2006-10-17
This is a great book. I've been a student of leadership for the past few years, always reading about historically significant men and women and how they were able to impact the world. Then I picked up Kahl's book, and I couldn't put it down. Servant leadership isn't a new concept, many of the powerful leaders I've studied employed this technique. However, in today's society, we rarely focus on a servant leadership technique. Kahl does a great job of outlining what real leadership looks like and how one can implement it in his everyday life. He makes the case that being a servant leader isn't "weak" or "sweet." No, it's the most effective way to influence others, reach your goals, and make sure you AND your team are successful. Whether you are a CEO, business owner, or simply in charge of leading your family, you will find relevant advice and concepts to think about in this book.
Changed my thinking in the workplace.......2006-10-14
When my boyfriend first handed me this book and said I had to check it out, I was honestly a little offended. I've never been one to read life-coaching books in any area, especially not in my job. As a young assistant DA, I thought I did a pretty good job of managing myself and my employees, and I didn't need a book to tell me how to do that. But as soon as I read the first chapter, I realized why he had given me the book, which he got from a friend. Kahl takes a different approach to the role of leadership, championing the idea of acting as a "servant" to those around you in order to get the best out of them. The idea sounded crazy to me at first, but as I starting practicing some of his suggestions, I saw such an increase in productivity and a general uplift in the attitude around the office! I can't believe a simple book could make such a difference, but it sure did. I recommend this book for anyone who is in a position of leadership, no matter how high or low in the company, because you could learn a lot from Kahl.
Sometimes, the worst thing about being on top is that you're standing alone........2006-10-03
As a small business owner, I am always looking for good leadership and business books; Leadership From the Heart is one of the best books I've found in a very long time. Jack Kahl shares how he mananged to build a business worth more than $300 million, Manco Inc., and still maintain an ethical, character-driven leadership style. Kahl makes it clear that you can unite ethics and a bottom line, while still being successfull. The best thing about this book is that Kahl's leadership style isn't a gimmic. He really wants to be successful, but he knows that those accomplishments are more lucrative, and feel better, if the people around him are successful too. This book teaches you to be a better leader, better business person, and a better human being.

Slave wages force adjunct professor to moonlight as prostitute.......2007-05-20
There are several details in this book that don't square up. Unfortunately, ghetto wages for adjunct professors is a fact. We go to school longer than most professions, including ones that we train others to enter, and we often make less than the average fast-food worker. To add insult to injury many community colleges have found a way to give their adjunct professors above and beyond full-time hours and still pay them the crappy adjunct rate. In addition there's no insurance, retirement, office, or even a desk! Substitute teacher pay in public schools isn't much better. Actually, if you factor in the transportation time, inconvenience, and abuse it usually comes out to be much less than the sales clerk rate. Academic medical research doesn't pay anything either. My friend told me that her husband looked at Harvard first but it only paid about $18,000. That was in 2005. Since he was from China (most researchers are from developing nations) his wife would not be eligible for a working visa. So he would have been expected to live in the Boston area and support his wife on $18,000 a year!
Given all that, I'm not going to be too judgmental of Angell. I just thought some of her behavior was incongruous. She was very cautious in some respects but not others. She had enough sense not to allow a trick to make a home movie of her but; she actually went out in public with some of these boors. It's that six degrees of separation thing and in academia it's more like one degree. I just couldn't believe that in the three years she spent doing this rumors didn't get back to the dean. Maybe they did and that made her an even hotter teaching commodity. By the way in 2007 high quality film can me shot in the dark and cameras can be hidden in the TV or even in something as small as a pen! I also found it down right flaky that with all her education, access to other professors, and the fact that she was teaching classes about prostitution she never bothered to research the legalities of it, i.e. arrest procedures, entrapment, loopholes, etc. Instead she simply takes the word of her madam, Peach, who tells her that if she asks if he's a police officer and he says "no" that an arrest won't hold up in court. Hello is anybody home! Bottom line: you don't want to get arrested! Even if you don't get convicted you'll most likely be ruined just the same.
Angell has some interesting perspectives on pop culture and the extent of Madison Avenue's reach. She reflects upon but does not analyze why it is that so many attractive, well-educated, otherwise very smart women find themselves easy marks for predatory moochers. In the beginning she lets the reader know that her "rat bastard" boyfriend Peter emptied her checking account and ran off with his other girlfriend. She let him move into her studio apartment, she did a threesome with him when she didn't want to, she's still paying off her credit cards that he ran up, and he was dealing marijuana (out of her apartment and probably her car, which could have gotten her into a lot of trouble). Since she didn't prosecute I assume that she gave him free reign to every thing she owned, in addition to her body.
She makes a valiant effort to rescue a crack addicted callgirl friend and is almost sucked down into the cesspit of no return along with her. She wakes up and sees the futility when a trick with a brother in rehab tellers her she has co-dependency issues, is wasting time, and walking a precarious line.
Then there's the smooth talking Pakistani trick. As a sociologist/ historian Angell must be aware that after Afghanistan Pakistan is probably the worst country in the world to be a woman and or a non-Muslim. He attends Harvard and lives in a fabulous apartment. He pouts, blows in her ear, and whines about how he can't afford to see her more often. She ends up doing him for free on a regular basis. She then finds out when she overhears his answering machine that he's a hero among his American friends for being able to get a "hooker for free."
On a subconscious level Angell seems aware that she is being manipulated and I'm sure a lot of readers recognized familiar MOs.
I wish she had put her education to work and concentrated more on analyzing the issues of personal boundaries and the subtle brain washing of the masses by Madison Avenue. I like it that she did point out that not every crack-hooker has childhood issues and not everyone with childhood issues becomes a loser. I think our society has kind of been oversold on the idea that all of our problems as adults are somehow the fault of our childhood. This autobiographical novel is not bad, but there are better prostitute adventure books out there. I highly recommend The Woman at Point Zero by Dr. Nawal El Saadawi.
As far as I'm concerned the ones who should be ashamed of themselves are the heads of Ivy League universities and CEOs who take millions for themselves while expecting those who do all the work to subsist on peanuts.
Typical and suports the stereotype of "hookers"........2007-03-01
I did read Tracey Quans book and that was like a Penthouse Forum of sexcapades and this book makes her seem like she's on an ego trip and like other s have said..stereotypes everyone else while not realizing that's what she has done to herself. I was not surprised at the level of drug use nor the unprotected sex acts...that's what the public thinks about anyway and she successfully made their assumptions come true.
Want something different to read? I have just put down "The Call Girl Actress...Confessions of a Lesbian Escort" by Erica Black and this book opened my eyes to a completely different view of the paid for sex world. Something very different so I won't give away the story.
Demimonde or Professor.......2006-11-11
It says a lot about American higher education that working as a call girl can appear more attractive than pursuing tenure as a professor. An overworked doctoral student find herself in need of money and a break from academic politics and exploitation. The author finds that the call girl scene was lucrative and not that different from blind dating. To some extent, the issues of danger and exploitation of sex workers are discussed, but her experiences were generally positive. An interesting inside view of a different world through the experiences of a well educated liberal participant-observer.
Was it wrong for me to think she'd be smarter?.......2006-11-10
I'm an undergrad from a NON-Ivy League school who works in the sex industry, and I was shocked at the stupid decisions she made! Doing coke with customers, smoking crack, telling a male friend about her work and was shocked he tried to buy a service, unprotected oral, kissing all of her clients on the mouth, working for a pimp... It just goes to show a degree doesn't help in this business unless you plan on writing a self absorbed memoir. Her writing is so-so as well. A lot of it goes like this, "I did this... and then I did that." You get the feeling that she thinks she's very elegant and sharp, but really, she was only charged $200 and hour. For a classic book on sex work, read Xaviera Hollander's "The Happy Hooker." It's a little dated, but she actually has an interesting story to tell.
Poignant .......2006-09-19
If you looking to Vicariously share in the Fantasies Jean played out with her Clients, this really isn't your book.
If you are however willing to read an honest, and often harrowing account of the life of a working girl, you will want to read this book. It is going to challenge your courage however. I stopped three times at least not sure I could read the next chapter, re-reading previous chapters, like you might massage something that's been wounded, coaxing it to heal.
The loss of her best Friend, another dear friend's spiral into addiction, her own near miss with that end. Its often a very painful book. Yet you feel because Jean has had the great courage to share with you, that you owe her the courage to stay with her to the end, her "Gentle Reader".
Jean reminds us, this is not a Victimless crime. Not when addicts are purposely manufactured, and women find themselves trapped in a life they often can never get out of on their own diminishing means.
She reminds us that each and every working girl is someone's daughter. We punish them, but it is our guilt for employing them that is being punished. They need our protection, not our condemnation. They deserve our thanks for being there for us when we are just so damn lonely we will gladly pay to be lied to for an hour. Not our Judgment for what are after all our own failings. At the end of the day the people in this book are rather sad, or course they are, they are all adrift.
So Jean asks you to have the courage to raise your voice to change the law. After you read this book, you may find the courage to do so.
If you have a daughter, you should read this book, but it will make great demands on your courage to finish it. Blessed Be, BB.
Book Description
Although military operations against terrorist forces often garner the headlines, those who protect government, military, and business leaders from assassination or kidnapping are also in the front lines against terrorism. Ready and prepared to place his body between his employer and a bullet, the bodyguard must be able to blend into the milieu around his charge, yet be ready to spring into action instantly to counter an attack. Based on techniques of the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. State Department Security, the Special Air Service, the Royal Corps of Military Police, the Metropolitan Police, the KGB and its successor the FSB, France's GSPR, and other protective units around the world, The Bodyguard Manual details the steps a protective team takes to prevent attack as well as the tactics which are employed when it is necessary to counter an attack in progress. From security aboard Concorde, the Orient Express, or the Queen Elizabeth 2, to protecting a military general officer in combat, The Bodyguard Manual allows the reader to "stand post" with the professional bodyguard.
Customer Reviews:
very good read.......2007-07-15
One of the better books on the subject, a step up from the earlier version, excellent graphics and well written and easily understood text. A good buy.
A book of many skills.......2006-10-15
First of all I have to say I am not a Protection Professional, I do not play one on TV, and I had no wish to become an Amatuer Bodyguard.
But that all changed when I had kids. The world is changing fast and it is my job to see to the safety of my loved ones. This book goes a long way to focusing the mindset to the hazards (real and imagined) that can be encountered. However much of it is geared to protection teams rather than the single protector. Good book though if you have an interest in the subject, I liked it but am not qualified to comment on the validity of the techniques.
more information than most.......2005-12-30
As I read the manual, I relized that there is'nt any manual out there that teaches you the art of protection services, all are just a general desciption and nothing more, I have invested alot of money on so called "trainning manuals" and still hav'nt found one yet that teaches you more than you probably know if you are serious about Entering into this Profession, But I will say that this is the most detailed of all the manuals I have read, and would be a great starting point for the novic protector.
Decent general purpose book on EP work........2004-01-14
Don't let the review titled "Accompagnement VIP" throw you off. That particular reviewer obviously has been reading "Inside Delta Force" a few times too many and has taken it to heart as being the end-all for executive protection work. Granted, "Inside Delta Force" is a damn good book, and I highly recommend it (but not as an example of what real-world EP work consists of).
But I'm getting off-topic and ranting.
This is a good overall book, and the author obviously has the credibility to stand behind what he says. He hits the high points about EP work, which is as good as it gets in learning how to do this job. Any decent EP course you choose to attend will do nothing more. An EP team's operating procedures are set by the team leader and are strongly influenced by the principal you are protecting.
Mr Thompson also emphasizes the one true reality of EP work. It's boring 90% of the time. And if you are doing your job correctly, this is how it should be.
The high-profile stuff in the news (SF guys with President Karzai, L. Paul Bremer in Irag, etc) are not the norm for EP work. Is it truly "Executive Protection"? Yes, but from a more "para-military" sense. EP work extends to covering corporate execs, celebrities, politicians, royal families, doctors working at abortion clinics..... the list is endless.
"The Bodyguard Manual: Protection Techniques of the Professionals" can be good for the individual looking to learn about bodyguards in general, someone trying to get their foot in the door, or even the seasoned professional looking to get a fresh perspective on how others do the job.
It's all in how you look at it and what you take from it!!

Accompagnement VIP.......2003-12-04
There is a french defenition for what this book explains, it is called (accompagnement VIP). I enjoy reading Mr thompson books, they are correct but academic, good as a presentation for a University degree, especialy the Concord chapter that is part of history now. But I would have some reservations of recommending this book as for professionals. Today's pro teams deal with very high risk and dangerous situations, I am talking about Delta force operators driving the US ambassador into west Beirut during conflict and coordinating their only E&E with a Zodiac at sea,or bodyguards Coordinating Embassy security with 24 hour mobile counter assault teams, protecting VIP in Iraq, Afghanistan,Pakistan where you are monitored by the enemy 24h, your cars already marked, and your movements noticed and your face already photographed, where the ambush is inevitable one day or another, protecting VIP's conducting negotiations in high risk areas and countries and sometimes between borders, that what we could call bodyguarding for proffessionals these days, and these are only few examples. The only problem is that those professionals are on duty now, hope one day one of them will share his experience with Amazon. I gave this book 3 stars for the hard efforts that Mr Thompson is still putting in delivering a correct message.

Customer Reviews:
Extremely Biased.......2004-08-23
I just completed a college course on American government that used this book. It leans extremely to the left and attempts to portray opinions as facts. To young people with no prior knowledge of politics, this book can be very influential, with inaccrate portrayals of many key events and Constitutional Amendments. An example is the extremely biased interpretations of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. For every clause and amendment, this book gives its own opinions of what it means. One blatant example is how it says the "militia" in the Constitution is the "National Guard" today. I believe that the only thing this book is good for is for use as an example of how bad and biased textbooks can be!
Stereotypically leftward leaning.......2003-07-16
I just finished a class with the 2001-2002 edition. Part of the book is very objective, other parts fit the stereotype of leftward leaning curriculum perfectly. It gives the perception that part of the authors really attempt to be objective, but at least one author's perceptions are left of center to the point that either he/she does not realize, or else does not care how leftward his/her perception is.
On balance, most of the book is pretty good, and pretty objective, but certain parts - especially the portrayals, and interpretations of events in the civil liberties, and judicial chapters will likely be more frustrating than to many of the older students who have been a part of the "Attentive public" for a few years. I call out these sections because these two in particular I noticed a considerable amount of editorialism put forth as objective fact.
Text for American Government Course.......2003-03-27
Three instructors have just finished using this book in a small liberal arts college for women. The program is an intensive one day a week program with five hour long classes. Students require a clearly written text that is interesting and easy to use. The Bardes text is all of these and more. The writing is well done, the many charts are relevant and very useful, the text offers good discussion opportunities with "what if?", "e-mocracy"and "which side are you on" sections in each chapter. Key concepts are highlighted and defined in the margins and are very useful. Additionally, the teacher support materials are very good especially the test bank which may be the best we have seen. The questions are relevant and clearly stated. The instructors and the students give this text a very positive review.
