Book Description
How do some monuments become so socially powerful that people seek to destroy them? After ignoring monuments for years, why must we now commemorate public trauma, but not triumph, with a monument? To explore these and other questions, Robert S. Nelson and Margaret Olin assembled essays from leading scholars about how monuments have functioned throughout the world and how globalization has challenged Western notions of the "monument."
Examining how monuments preserve memory, these essays demonstrate how phenomena as diverse as ancient drum towers in China and ritual whale-killings in the Pacific Northwest serve to represent and negotiate time. Connecting that history to the present with an epilogue on the World Trade Center, Monuments and Memory, Made and Unmade is pertinent not only for art historians but for anyone interested in the turbulent history of monuments—a history that is still very much with us today.

Book Description
It's not only fashion designers who leave their mark on a look: they'd be nothing without make-up artists and hairstylists. Odile Gilbert, one of the most creative hairstylists of all, finds herself in the greatest of demand these days. She works her fleeting, human materials into designs much as a sculptress would, borrowing from historical styles and ethnic languages of form, using feathers, earth and precious stones to fashion the most lavish of creations. This book sneaks a look behind the scenes of the fashion world and shows Odile Gilbert at work and alongside her finished creations. Her Style includes pictures of fashion shows, photographs for magazines and advertising campaigns. It is the result of many layers of fruitful collaboration: stylized with some of the world's best known fashion designers, photographed by the best fashion photographers and modeled on the most famous models of our time.

Great Break from the Humdrum Reads.......2005-09-30
I would give this book 4 1/2 stars if I were able. I don't give any book a five unless it just totally blows me away, which has yet to come. This book is a great collage of wit and campy humor. Shannon Wheeler steps outside all of the seriousness of the world and lets us laugh at our own perplexity and stupidity. I keep this book on my desk at work to cheer me up when I'm down. The story is only part of the reason this book is worth buying. The artwork is well drawn and very humorous as well - a definite must have for fans of comic humor!
the world explained by coffee and cigarettes.......2002-04-16
This is a book. It's deep, it's funny, and it laughs at almost everything that most people take seriously. When TMCM explains to his friends how we live in a society that tolerates violence more than nudity, they reply, "I'd rather get hit in the head than see you naked." Many people would agree with this, but wouldn't dare admit it, in case someone accused them of being politically incorrect or some other daft notion. And speaking of daft notions, the whole "missile defense shield" concept is put under the microscope and shown for the silliness it truly represents. But, as the astronaut who is welding it together tells TMCM, at least he'll make a lot of money building it.
The point of all this: Amusing Musings is a solid literary achievement that mixes social commentary with existential philosophy and creates something that is just as funny as real life, but more interesting. This book belongs on the table of anyone who finds parties to be boring as hell and knows that if God knows everything, he can't have faith in anything, and therefore is an atheist. Those who take this kind of stuff seriously would be well advised to stay far away from this book, and go buy something written by Maya Angelou instead.

Product Description
Every opera tells a story, but sometimes the creation of an opera makes a pretty fascinating tale on its own. If Verdi's Aida is the quintessential opera, it is also an amazing piece of musical history. This work examines the origin, composition, premiere, recording history, and consistent popularity of one of Verdi's greatest works. In the late 1860s, Ismail Pasha, Khedive (viceroy) of Egypt, asked Verdi to compose a work to premiere in the Cairo Opera House. Although Verdi was uninterested in the project at first, persistence on the part of the Khedive as well as a tempting plot line written by Mariette Bey, one of the day's leading Egyptologists, drew him in. To this day, however, much mystery still surrounds the opera's inception. This book explores that mystery, highlights the genius of Aida's plot and characters, and traces the process through which Verdi and his librettist Ghislanzoni shaped the lyrics. It also considers Aida's spread from Cairo to the rest of the world, discussing aspects of its unique and interesting staging. Following this history, the book provides a critical survey of recordings of Aida, including 33 of the entire opera and three abridged versions. The final chapter discusses film and video presentations. Appendices offer a discography of complete recordings, a videography of versions generally available and an annotated guide to further sources.

Customer Reviews:
Where's the pictures?.......2003-03-19
I am inclined to think favorably of any book that comes out from Chronicle Books. They publish very good quality books. Their craft books are often first rate.
I bought this book through the mail, but was very dismayed to find that it has very few pictures of the crafts and activities. Consequently, it is not very enticing. I put it in a box and didn't think about it for months until I just unpacked it today.
Some of the activities seem awfully bland and unoriginal. Make and play with a paddle and ball? Make wet footprints on the sidewalk? Ideas like this for almost 20 bucks? This is not up to Chronicle's usual standards. There are some very fine books out there that suggest great activities for kids, but this isn't one of them.

The Real Deal Book on Cold Calling.......2007-08-12
I am one of those rare folks who enjoys cold calling but I picked up this book as a companion to Closing the Sale. This is an excellent read that can better you best results or turn around your cold calling (lack of) success. In short, this is the real deal.
With Keith by Your Side, Cold Calling Works!.......2007-08-09
Despite what some talking heads may say, cold calling works. I've read both the "anti-cold calling" books as well as Mr. Rosen's books, and I can say that the arguments clearly lean in Mr. Rosen's favor. The "never cold call again" groups really address similar stuff that Mr. Rosen does, which leads me to believe that their position is more a matter of savvy marketing, driven to sell books, rather than anything revolutionary.
With that said, cold calling doesn't work...that is, unless you have a method that provides you with measurable results. And that's precisely what Mr. Rosen's book gives you. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cold Calling, is one of those essential books that never has a chance to rest on a shelf and collect dust.
In my experience, I was stuck. I had been cold calling for a couple of years and found myself in a telemarketing quandary. Mr. Rosen's book couldn't have come at a better time. He combines a precise, no-nonsense message with words that are easy on the eyes. His book is equal parts practical guide and motivational tool. I particularly appreciated the time he commits to the psychology of selling. The emphasis on process goals (a book he should write next) is a new look at the outcome-driven goals that many of us were taught to follow.
I read Mr. Rosen's book and committed time to completing his exercises and following his techniques. Two weeks later, I scheduled five qualified appointments. Why do I say "qualified"? Before I read his book, I focused on setting up the appointment. I'd meet with prospects, but after all the driving and time spent in an office, often, the only thing I had to show for my effort was a wrinkled shirt that required dry cleaning. Using Mr. Rosen's book as a guide, matters quickly turned around for me. I met with people that were ready to close because I qualified them over the phone. I wish I had his book three years ago. (To think of all the gas I would have saved!)
If you've doubted your skills, needed some fresh ideas, or are new to the cold calling process, buy The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cold Calling. Once you do, you'll soon have a book that has a worn down spine, pages loaded with Post-its, and a cover that refuses to stay shut--just like mine.
Idiot's Guide to Cold Calling Review.......2007-07-28
This is a good book for those who are just beginning their cold calling career. It provides good techniques as well as outlooks on the reasons for cold calling. I would recommend for any novice cold-caller just getting started. However, for those who loathe cold calling, but realize the necessity of it in their business, I would HIGHLY recommend Wendy Weiss's Cold Calling for Women.
complete idiots guide to ccold calling.......2007-05-30
the best cold calling book out there. Really changed how I view about cold calling. I hated it before. Was truly stuck and terrorized by the phone. Very easy to read.
A must read if you set sales appointments over the phone........2006-12-23
As a sales professional with over 20 years of sales experience I've read many books on various sales issues I can say this is one of the best and most useful. I'm always looking for fresh ideas and Keith Rosen has really done a fantastic job in covering all the aspects of cold calling. Compared to all of the other books on cold calling this is the best I've read.
Keith's approach to the call and the to the process itself are completely professional and teaches you how to be respectful to the person on the other end of the phone. If you follow the techniques that Keith outlines you will have better success in securing more quality appointments with more prospects.
Book Description
Distinguished political philosopher Michael Walzer offers a provocative reappraisal of the core tenets of liberalism. Ranging over contested issues including multiculturalism, pluralism, difference, civil society, and racial and gender justice, he suggest ways in which liberal theory might be revised to make it more hospitable to the claims of equality.
"[An] elegant and probing critique of contemporary liberal thought."—G. John Ikenberry, Foreign Affairs
"With his usual originality, clarity, depth, and intelligent judgments, Michael Walzer offers a perspective on political life that reveals serious inadequacies in standard liberal views and points to directions of change."—Robert Dahl, Sterling Professor Emeritus, Yale University
Customer Reviews:
Not His Finest Effort.......2006-08-14
It's not that I disagree with Walzer's ideas in "Politics and Passion," it's that I find them unexceptionable to a rather boring degree. Even the title essay lacks the fire that I look for in a political essay. Unless the reader wishes to be a Michael Walzer "completist," to read every word he writes, I would suggest purchasing an earlier collection called "Arguing About War." Walzer at his best is possibly our most humane political thinker, and an essay such as "Can There Be a Decent Left" would be required reading in my utopia. I eagerly await his next book and hope it avoids the blandness of this one.
Raises some interesting issues about liberalism.......2005-06-10
Nobody ought to expect political ethics to be easy. And maybe that's a good way to start thinking about the topics in this book. Walzer asks us some tough questions right away.
Try this one first. Should liberals be tolerant of totalitarian groups within their society? There is no easy answer. If we rule that some religious parents have no right to raise their children in religious schools we would be saying, in effect, "We're tolerant! We're liberals! We tolerate all liberals! And we don't tolerate others, but so what ... they're different than us!"
Obviously, that won't do at all.
If we go to the other extreme, and tolerate everyone, no matter how much of a threat they are to our society, that won't work either. If we smugly decide to do something in between these two extremes, that means being arbitrary rather than following easily applied principles.
Walzer concludes that when "political power is at stake, we should tilt decisively against the totalizing groups," just for the sake of decency. But he reminds us that this is merely a guideline. "It doesn't solve the problem of day-to-day coexistence." Such problems require "a long and unstable series of compromises."
The author also talks about involuntary associations, such as family or cultural group. Are we morally obliged to defend our families or cultural groups if they are attacked? Walzer thinks we generally are.
Walzer also asks about the concept of deliberation. That's different than debate, which is simply a contest in which one tries to win, even with an unsound argument. Deliberation involves trying to make as good a decision as possible about what policy to pursue. Here, the author points out that liberal societies debate thinkable policies with great freedom. But they also define what policies are thinkable, and those which are not simply don't get brought up.
A final topic is passion in politics. Do we want our villains to be cold and calculating? Or wild and frenzied? Do we need more passion or less?
I guess I disagree with the author here. Any human is likely to be passionate enough about any interesting issue, the more so if there is widespread debate about it. As a liberal, I'm not afraid of fickleness on social issues. I'm not afraid of having kids disagree politically with their parents. But I am afraid of people going overboard and taking dubious and illogical political positions, unsupported by facts, which they then passionately refuse to reconsider.
In any case, the author has some good ideas, and I recommend the book.

From choosing binoculars and field guides to creating a garden birds will love, The Complete Backyard Birdwatcher's Home Companion is the complete guide for any birder in North America. Customer Reviews:
The Complete Backyard Birdwatcher's Home Companion.......2000-12-21
We have a shelf of bird books but none, so far, as complete and helpful as this one. The author is well known and highly respected in his field. The book is beautifully printed and organized, meticulously researched with valuable help and information for every level of bird enthusiast from beginner to expert. The Internet links are up-to-date and make available valuable additional information. I recommend this book without reservation to everyone who is interested in birds, wants to learn more about them, set up or enhance a habitat, photograph or simply enjoy these wonderful and fascinating creatures. This book also makes an excellent gift.
A complete and useful reference.......2000-11-10
This book is exactly what its cover promises: a "single-source reference for all your needs." I've seen many recent publications that discuss some, but not nearly all, of the backyard birdwatching topics that Mr. Heintzelman presents in up-to-date detail. He not only informs but also inspires the reader to use the suggestions he offers for landscaping, nest boxes, feeders, water and shelter, and controlling pests and predators. Two other especially good chapters include tips on identifying birds and an easy-to-grasp introduction to birds' natural history. An especially valuable feature concludes the book. Usually an appendix isn't much more than an afterthought, but that's not the case here. Six important appendices list information for contacting bird-oriented internet sites, organizations, government programs, and companies that sell equipment, plus suggestions for further reading. I've had the book for only a week, and I'm already using those lists. Overall, this is a very attractive and useful resource for the backyard birdwatcher.
The Indeed Complete Birdwatcher's Guide.......2000-11-02
Donald S. Heintzelman's new book "The Complete Backyard Birdwatcher's Home Companion" is an informative guide for anyone, especially beginners and intermediate level birdwatchers, interested in learning about the birds that we see around us on our journey through life. The book is amazing, because it is indeed complete. It covers not only a concise history about birds and how they evolved with their different features. It also deals with all the "how to's" of birdwatching and identification and shows how we can responsibly attract birds to our own backyards. The book gives innumerable tips on feeding, housing and birdwatching equipment and generously shares resources. Truly this book is a treasure for the beginning and intermediate level backyard birder.
