Book Description
Olive Parrot Shares Her Birthday is the ideal book to read aloud to your bird, as a bedtime story, or just during "quality time". Everyone with a companion bird (and anyone who loves birds!) should own this book.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic gift for any occasion.......2005-09-14
Olive Parrot Shares her Birthday is a real find. It is one of those rare children's books that combines clever humor with a compelling and exciting storyline, allowing an adult to enjoy it as much as any child. It serves to bring out the child in an adult while challenging a developing youngster with its clever puns and twists of fate. The book is also beautifully illustrated and bound with such high quality materials, that it looks and feels as good as any coffee-table glossy. Olive Parrot would make a truly magnificent birthday gift, but it is also a fantastic gift for any occasion. A classic in the making.
So Much to Love.......2005-09-12
I must also be a bird since I just loved reading the book, looking at the illustrations, and laughing at so many references to adult culture. The idea is so clever and so well written that it's fun over and over again, not to mention the brightly colored and detailed pictures. What a fun gift for a birthday at any age.
Olive is an instant classic.......2005-09-06
This book has it all. Kids will love the gorgeous illustations, the "happily ever after" tale that is neither trite nor too predictable, and most of all, the lyrical flow of the prose. Grown-ups will enjoy the jokes thrown in just for them and will find a story that wears well with each and every reading. Olive is definitely NOT (just) for the birds!
So Much Fun.......2005-09-04
I recieved this book as a birthday gift from a very good friend that always has great taste in gifts. He hit his peak with this purchase. I enjoy this book every time I pick it up. The story made me feel good and enjoy an adult birthday. The art work is fabulous and comical. If you have a big friend or little friend with a birthday this will be the perfect gift.
People and pets alike! Terrific!.......2005-09-04
Received as a gift from a bird-lover friend, I read this wonderfully funny and witty tale to my small children and my dog Jegs. They love the characters and the whimsy of the tale. They usually laugh at loud (especially Jegs).
Like Bugs Bunny cartoons, it appeals at all levels of development - arrested or not - with sophisticated charm. My wife and I have shared it with our family on multiple occasions and it remains fresh and funny.
We give it maximum stars (Jegs too).

Book Description
This book deals with the Egyptian film industry in its formative period (from the beginning of the century through the early 60s)
Customer Reviews:
An OK Book.......2007-05-04
The overview of Egyptian movies is good, and it discusses some of the classic movies produced by Egypt's moviemakers but it never really produces a "feel" for these movies. The bios of key people in the industry is helpful, but overall it just gives you a feel that it has a lack of substance. It might make a good companion book if studying the genre from the outside.
Much More than a Portrait!.......2003-11-13
If you are an avid Middle Eastern movie enthusiast or Belly Dancer, this is the book for you. Although a limited reference, this 48 page glossy reference is filled with the biographies of some of the most famous singers and dancers of the Egyptian film industry in its formative period. From the beginning of the 20th century to the early 1960s, the book offers biographical sketches of some of the greatest figures in Egyptian cinema. Read about Muhammad Abd al-Wahab and Umm Kulthum, two of Egypt's foremost music figures. Learn about comedian Ismail Yasin, dancers Tahiya Karioka and Na'eema akef, international star Omar al-Sharif, and so many more!
This little reference book is a great addition to any library concerning Belly Dance!

Great Mind Bender!.......2006-11-14
This is great book... from the first puzzle to the last one, nice way to kill time.
Entertaining but could be improved.......2004-06-11
This is a challenging book of puzzles; what I really liked about it was that after each puzzle there's a section that gives you some hints (or "solution schemes"), and then in the back of the book there are the solutions.
Sometimes I found that the "hints" really weren't really very helpful, and sometimes it would have been helpful if the solutions had gone into more detail and/or have been written more clearly. Sometimes they were hard to follow.
Absolutely Excellent!.......2003-07-24
This is an excellent book for anyone who wishes to develop his or her deductive reasoning and problem solving skills. It does not only provide you with solutions, but shows you step by step how to get there.Up until quite recently I thought that the ability to reason logically is inborn, but after doing a little research I realized that it is a skill that can be developed with the aid of good quality books such as The Great Book of Mind Teasers & Mind Puzzlers. It is definitely a book that can make you feel that your reasoning abilities can be developed beyond the ones that you currently have.
ONE OF THE BEST.......2000-01-13
I can't believe I'm the first person to review this book after all these years. This book is one of the true classics in puzzle history. If you are a true lover of logic and thinking skills, then this is a must. I have spent the better part of 40 years collecting the best puzzles and this heads the list. Maybe the reason it has never been reviewed is that it is a demanding array of puzzles...not for the faint of heart.Thank you, Mr. Summers, for hours of pleasure.

Customer Reviews:
Several lessons to be learned in here.......2007-06-06
Jack Chapman has several lessons in this book that we can all learn from. He starts by making you realize how quickly we move into talking about salary and settling on whatever happens to seem "safe" (so as to not "loose" the job opportunity in front of us), although this is perhaps one of the most important career decisions we can make at the moment.
He borrows from successful negotiation techniques at large and applies them with laser-sharp focus on negotiating the best possible salary with all parts winning. Included in the book is a discussion of elements such as evaluating stock option packages and helping the interviewee shape the job s/he is applying for, by having the interview be paced differently.
Not groundbreaking, but very useful for those planning to make a career move.
Worth thousands.......2007-05-30
I'm a career coach and my clients have utilized the strategies in this book with great success. Last week a client suggested that the title should be, "How To Make $2000 A Minute" because by taking two minutes to ask a recruiter if her starting salary could be increased, she received $4000 more in base pay. Other clients have negotiated even more. This book is definitely worth the small investment to purchase it as there is a good chance that the reader can recover the cost of the book many times over.
Good Buy.......2006-03-23
This book works! I used it to help negotiate a recent job offer last week. Using the techniques in this book I was able to secure an expense account (moderate size) and a pay increase of $3,000. I am sure this is entry level progress. However, for my first effort in negotiating I am quite proud of the results.
This book is an easy read and straight to the point. The tactics recommended are simple to follow and will set you on a trail to free thinking as to how to maximize your monetary worth.
Save your $12.95...better info on the net.......2006-02-13
This book could have been a pamphlet of about 5-10 pages instead of a book, and it should have been given free of charge. Although there are many very positive reviews on this book, this book doesn't tell you what you need to do to get a raise, but leaves you, the reader, to decide what steps you could take that might lead to a raise (or might lead to you getting terminated), with each having a different positive or negative result. This was just another attempt by a no-name author to try and make a buck off of the general public. What a waste of $13.
Informative.......2006-01-06
I received this book as a gift, but it is well worth its money. This is an easy-to-read book on the do's and don'ts of the salary negotiations during the interviewing process. The author answers questions about telling salary rates to temp. agencies as well as corporate agencies. He explains the pitfalls of asking too early and not getting the amount deserved. He explains when to ask, what to ask, and even better...what should you research before you speak on the topic of salary. The only reason the book didn't get five stars is because I'm still a little hesitant as to why he concentrated his research with the job seekers instead of the companies. Many of the things that the seekers are told to say, I'm not convinced the employer would be that thrilled about. He mentions how some may not be happy and/or lose out on the seeker's worth, but I wish there was a more concentrated fine line where both can feel comfortable during the interview(s). Other than that, great book.
UPDATE:
I just recently got a full-time, permanent Copyediting job (a job I've been trying to get forever!) and when the question about salary was asked, not only did I remember what I read from this book, but I used it word-for-word and got the job with a bigger salary than they initially wanted to give me. I'm forever grateful to this author!

Book Description
Internationally renowned horse trainer Mark Rashid pays tribute to the horse that became his teacher.
In Mark Rashid's fourth book, Life Lessons from a Ranch Horse, the teacher becomes the student when a nondescript, seven-year-old horse steps into his life. A famous horse trainer, known for listening to horses and working with them in a non-confrontational manner, Mark is faced with odd behavior from this horse, and he must reevaluate everything he understands about horses and about himself, as a trainer and as a person.
Beginning with an untimely balk from Buck, who never falters, Mark tried to find out why it happened. Drawing on experiences as far reaching as the Navajo way and Japanese martial arts, Mark begins to piece together the workings of the mind of his horse. That process and the conclusions he reaches are the heart of this very personal story.
What he finds challenges him to become a better horse trainer, but it also challenges him to become a better person. His argument that Buck, an everyday horse, has the ability to plan ahead and make choices in a consistent manner will challenge the reader to rethink his or her relationships with animals and way of dealing with life.
In separate chapters, Mark describes the six life lessons he learned while working with Buck. Later in the book, he puts these lessons into practice, with topics such as blending, balance, and communication. Throughout the book, a philosophy of dealing with horses and of living life itself emerges.
Mark's inimitable storytelling skills illuminate what Buck has to teach. Heart warming but gritty, Life Lessons From a Ranch Horse is not a conventional horse book. But, then again, Buck is not a conventional horse, nor is his owner a conventional horse trainer.
Customer Reviews:
Six Stars.......2007-09-27
I am not good at reviewing books, but I will say that if you had a six star rating instead of just five, I would definitely give it a six.
Anyone who is fond of horses or has ridden and/or worked with horses would love this book written by a totally likeable man who looks at training, riding, working and just being buddies from the horse's point of view. This book shows great understanding of the subject. Mark's writing is easy, compassionate, humorous and you just hate it when the book ends. From now on I will buy any book written by Mark Rashid. (TOLD you I was not good at writing reviews)!
another great horse and rider partnership book.......2007-01-10
a book showing that there is a lot to be learned from our horse if we only care to listen to him/her.
Life Lessons not Rashid's best.......2006-02-25
I have read most of Mark Rashid's books, and I had greatly anticipated reading this one hoping for more insight into horse training. If you are looking for training advice in this book you will find very little of it. The book deals mostly with what Mark learned about his own personal behavior through observing his horse Buck. One could take advice from the book I suppose but you have to dig much deeper to come away with useful tidbits. Also, don't expect any of the colorful stories of the "Old Man" that appeared in other books by Mark, there are none of those here, and only a smattering of stories about working with horses other than Buck. It is a good read, but don't expect much in the way of tips on working with horses.
Fabulous. Your horse will love you for it.......2005-10-17
I love the easy reading. Anyone who needs to have more confidence and fun with their horse needs this book. All of Rashids books are great! I found my patience with my Horse soar and the games and fun I have riding - make me appreciate my horse even more.
Took my breath away!.......2005-07-07
This is the third book of Mark's that I've read in the last two months. He is an amazing writer and brings with him the understanding of how to not only create a compassionate relationship with horses but with our world. He is a teacher in the truest sense. His relationship with his horse Buck has enriched anyone who has read his words.
His books are on my very short list of favorites. I WISH that there were more of them!

Book Description
The word "Quisling" has been used as a synonym for "traitor" or "treachery." The original Vidkun Quisling (1887-1945) was a gifted Norwegian army officer who sided with the Nazis on the first day of Norway's entry into the Second World War. Dahl's biography is the first to use a complete range of source material from Nordic, German, Italian and Russian archives, and family archives now in the United States tracing Quisling's career through to the drama of his trial and execution for high treason in 1945.
Customer Reviews:
Quisling was more than an arch collaborator........2000-02-29
Because the name Quisling has passed into everyday language, there is a danger we sloganize the historical character. As Dahl makes clear in this scholarly but most readable biography, Quisling was not simply a nazi yes man. His own ideas owed much to Christian fundamentalism and a home grown philosophy called Universalism. He collaborated with Hitler, whom he met far more frequently than the head of any other conquered country, in the hope that he could re-establish Norwegian independence after the war. His dawning realization that this was impossible produced personal hopelessness and made him detested in Norway. He had backed the wrong horse. Dahl is excellent in showing up both the tensions in Quisling himself and in the ruling NS party, itself by no means united. The minister president's own often tortuous dealings with Terboven, the Reich's commissioner in Norway, are particularly well described. Once he realized he would be executed, Quisling put forward the thesis that he would be far more dangerous after his death than during his life. He was wrong about that too. Outside Norway, the family name lives on only in a US medical clinic which his relatives once founded. The name Quisling still means in Madison, Wisconsin good health and well being. This masterly book is a first rate insight into the politics of absolute failure.

A Brilliant Founding Book of the Homeschooling Movement.......2007-06-17
This book is on my list of "The Ten Best." It does more than brilliantly advocate a turn away from education as an institutional product. It speaks for the adoption of a whole new worldview.
Illich eshews the usual reformers' clichés about our need for more schools, more school funding, etc., etc. He is much more radical and deep than that. He sometimes quotes and is often categorized with "deconstructionist" philosophers such as Foucault. However Illich is a thousand times more accessible and grounded than Foucault. And if after reading Illich, you feel the need for even more grounded advice about the benefits of homeschooling, I highly recommend you read the works of John Holt, starting perhaps with his "How Children Learn" and "How Children Fail." Holt brings the philosophy of homeschooling down to the everyday and individual.
But Illich looks at the big picture - at how our lives have been hijacked by a consumer mentality. It's not that he's giving suggestions about how schools could be improved. It's not that he's advocating any adjustments to our current teaching methods at all, and he's certainly not giving directions on how to transplant the pedagogical tools of the school into the "safer" environment of the home. It's that he's against the whole IDEA of schools and teaching in the first place. But wait! Before you gasp and turn away, read further.
Perhaps the most telling summary of his global objection lies in his pages on how schooling converts verbs into nouns in our lives. The modern mandatory educational system is created by and in turn promotes a constant reification, a constant restructuring of every intangible human capacity into a tangible need - into a consumer demand for service to be supplied by some institutional provider. Now we all wait on deliverance of those goods and services. So instead of bouncing out into the world thinking, "Whee - what can I LEARN today?" - a typical child soon settles into the dry demand of, "I NEED an EDUCATION." The active doing of "to learn" becomes the passive wanting of schooling. In an exactly parallel way, the child's once exuberant cry of "Whee - where can I GO today?" has become the perennially pouty, "I NEED WHEELS." And our whole society has been shaped into the circular driveway of requiring and accommodating only that latter demand.
Many of Illich's suggestions for creating an alternate environment conducive to learning rather than to being taught - were not particularly realistic, especially in the 1970s when this book first became popular. For example, some the computer-facilitated "learning exchanges" he advocated were attempted, but usually soon degenerated into casual meet-markets. Today, with the much broader scope of computer networking, the possibilities for some true learning interchanges to take place through that medium are much better. However Illich's ideas about apprenticeships and the like may still be hard to implement in our world, where so much of people's imagination and energy remains invested in standard educational institutions.
But however practical or impractical Illich's solutions may prove to be - his posing of the problem has the capacity to expand your thinking into an alternate universe. Then you might want to go on to read his critiques of our transportation industry, and of our health care system in such books as "Medical Nemesis."
"The Observer" was correct - This book is "Good radical stuff".......2005-11-15
Ivan Illich, author of "Deschooling Society," presents a fairly radical view of education overhaul. I do not necessarily agree with all of his ideas, but I do support the foundation of his argument. The good thing about this book is that it has benefits for people who both agree and disagree with his philosophy. I think everybody who has been through the education system would agree that there is something, however big or small, fundamentally wrong with education. It was much the same in 1970 when Illich wrote this book. This book presents some problems that should be addressed whether with Illich's proposals or something else. A failing system should be fixed somehow and in someway. Illich just gives some fairly radical ways of doing so.
I do not agree with the "edu-credit cards" that Illich proposes, but it is an interesting idea. However, the "learning webs" are a great idea. These "skill exchanges" would not only provide the knowledge that people are seeking but also foster more social interaction and people would be forced to develop the social skills that seem to be less obvious and less important in the current age.
In summary, I think that "Deschooling Society" is a good work of literature that is a worthwhile read, especially for students in the field of education. I will remind you that it is radical, and many will probably not like this book because of the suggestions and implications Illich provides. However, the ideas are grounded and based on problematic areas of school and society. These areas deserve a second glance through this text or another.
Illich had the right ideas...........2005-11-02
In his book Deschooling Society, Ivan Illich explores the diametrically opposite effects of institutions, schools in particular, compared to its progressive intentions. Illich continues to explain this phenomenon of the school and concludes that the institution of school, the keystone of our society, be removed and allow all the manipulative institutions that build our society to collapse. Illich further proposes that society should then be reconstructed with an educational institution that would support the convivial institutions of society and truly use the world as the environment for educational experience.
Sound basis, silly conclusions.......2004-07-26
Based on a few real insights on the problems with the educational system (the value of "progress" through grades instead of the value of learning), Illich takes his argument to its logical - which is not to say sensible - extreme.
The book starts off with some persuasive, intuitive and troubling thoughts that any reasonable person who has spent a few years in the educational system should wholeheartedly agree with. But after throwing around some jargon and unsubstantiated facts, the author recommends throwing out the baby with the bathwater. The entire book seems to be based on the idea that since reform would be difficult, long, and expensive, it should not be undertaken at all. Instead, some sort of technologically-enhanced medievalism is advocated. Illich seems to believe that by giving people an option not to educate themselves (or, perhaps more accurately, the option when, where, and how to educate themselves) we will somehow overcome the current economic and political inequaliites that fall so disturbingly along the lines of educational "achievement".
The book is worth reading if for no other reason than to witness how something so seemingly unassailable as "school" can be criticized and demonized. As for a model of HOW to revolutionize education, in my opinion, the reader is better off looking elsewhere.
Not necessary, but should still be a 'valid' way to learn.......2004-05-28
I don't totally agree that we should get rid of schools completely, but what Illich recommends should be a 'valid' way to learn. That is, we should be able to do what is now technologically feasible, which is to have networks of people with common interests who can communicate with each other (through mail, email, etc) and decide when/where they will meet to discuss something. An example he gives is a guitar teacher posting their contact information & availability somewhere, and someone interested in learning to play the guitar contacting them. Simple as that, and it would be a similar situation with anything. I think something like that could happen in a school environment, which is where I don't really agree with Illich, but the system would have to be changed radically for it to be possible. I don't think it would matter whether schools 'stay' in society but with a totally different system where students are encouraged to question everything & do what they're comfortable with, or done away with altogether though. Such an education situation wouldn't last long in a society based on authoritarian hierarchic institutions.
