My family enjoyed these very charming and witty cartoons. The book contains an excellent collection of the famous Booth drawings.

George Booth's cartoons, often seen in the New Yorker, are collected wonderfully in this book. He has lots of hilarious things to say about dogs, automechanics, banking and living on the edge. Everyone in my family who read this laughed and laughed.

This book is really good and includes a lot of information and pictures. It doesn't talk to much about how to obtain a model permit and taxes etc. but does really give a good perspective from a child/parents point of view.

Ok, not great..........2007-04-09

I was a little disappointed with this book. I was expecting a scholarly history, biographies of the inventors, inside stories, tales of invention and rivalry, etc... But the book really belongs more on a coffee table. There is an interesting, not-too-in depth essay at the beginning talking about the history and origins of the "Novelty Movement", but the rest of the book is dedicated to a picture dictionary with explanations and blurbs that are sometimes interesting, but not horribly informative. Whats in the Mystery Bag?? They never tell you! Frustrating purchase...

Elvis: The #1 Hits: The Secret History Of The Classics by rock music historian Patrick Humphries is an engaging trivia guide that reveals the inspiration and history behind Elvis' most famous rock songs, from the real location of Heartbreak Hotel to mafia involvement in the popular tune "Can't Help Falling In Love." Black-and-white and a few color photographs enhance the amazing anecdotes in this excellent giftbook which will be greatly appreciated Elvis fans everywhere.

Good for beginners but so so for fans.......2003-04-30

Elvis the #1 Hits features the stories behind every Elvis #1 on the US and English Pop Charts including "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" which was left off the recent chart topping CD compilation of hits. Humphries addresses each hit song by song. Sadly, despite the promising subject, for anyone who has read even a few books about Presley the book doesn't have a lot to offer.

The book's subtitle is the "secret history of the classics" but secret is a strong word to describe the stories in this book. There is virtually nothing new in this tome compiled from previously published texts with little original research by the author (save a nice but brief interview with Paul McCartney). Worse many important facts and stories are left out like Elvis saving "Can't Help Falling in Love" from the scrap heap after his buddies tossed it out as "a song Presley wouldn't like". All of the stories that are in here have been told and mostly retold in books like Peter Guralnick's two volume biography (which should be your first stop for Elvis reading) and Jerry Hopkins' books among others.

The only thing in here that wouldn't be known to many of your hardcore Elvis fans is the evolution of the remix of "Little Less Conversation". To be fair, outside of the songs there are also some interesting pieces on margins of the Elvis legend including Elvis' possible Welsh origins and an insane woman who thinks she is Lisa Marie.

And the familarity of the stories doesn't mean the book isn't passable reading. If you are not already familiar with Elvis these stories are probably very enlightening. Humphries is a serviceable critic. He doesn't instill the reader with a burning desire to hear the music like a master like in the style of Greil Marcus, but he does a good job of describing the songs and their impact. And once in awhile he does have an insight or two. (Some readers may be shocked at his contention that Elvis' work provided the framework for the art of Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola etc.) Sadly, he discusses little of Elvis' music beyond the #1 hits, even in passing.

The book is nicely illustrated with a generous helping of pictures. However, most of the pictures are familiar and there is at least one huge [...]in the captions. (On page 37 there's a picture of actor David Scott in "This is Elvis" that is mistakenly identified as the king himself.)

Overall, this is not a bad introduction to Elvis and his music. But, even a beginner would be better off with Guralnick's books or Paul Simpson's "The Rough Guide to Elvis". The latter book has a similar format to this book but much more insight and relevant information.

This is a nicely organised volume and the author is indeed highly successful in revealing the Bb5 Rossolimo/Moscow sicilian themes. The exemplar games were well chosen and the themes easy to remember.

I was surprised how quickly I'd finished it and in particular by how easily the Bb5 line avoided an opponents favourite theory heavy Pelikan alternative.

Excellent introduction for intermediate players.......2005-09-09

One warning in advance: Tournament and master players who employ the Bb5-systems in their games will be disappointed by this book, which will bring them "nothing new" and which is not "complete" at all.

Still, at university the most popular books are not the complete ones, but those small guidebooks that prepare students who do not necessarily want to become Nobel laureates for their next exam, right?

McDonald's book is just like that: a fantastic introduction for the club player and players of up to, say, ELO 2.200. McDonald explains the strategies in such a clear, entertaining and didactically excellent way, that those players will learn a lot not only about this opening, but also about chess strategy as such. Though this is a rather slim work, he still presents enough theory for the reader to employ this system (Moscow and Rossolimo variations) in his own practice without fearing any nasty surprises.

easy read with a great message.......2006-06-26

While I probably would have been embarrassed to walk up to a cashier at a book store with this title, I had no problem ordering it through the mail. I am not crazy about the name "Mr Schmooze", but I do think the book has a great message.

The message is to give to others. Do things for others. Be nice to others. Surprise people by letting them know you are thinking about them even when you are not around them. Its a pretty simple message that most of us have forgotten.

In the short book, Mr Schmooze teaches a college intern about interacting with others. He is constantly looking for ways to give to others and make them feel special. It works out well for him in the book, and I am sure it would work out well in real life.

I started thinking about it and I realized that I know only a few people in my life that are always trying to help others. Thats kinda sad, because I really know a lot of people. I guess its time to start expanding my circle of friends.

Overall its a good book. Not very thick, but with a powerful message. It took me a couple of hours to get through it. Thats good, because it will be easy to reread every so often so I don't forget the message.

This book is one of those rare finds that can truly light the fire! The ideas are presented in a fun, easy and quick read. I find myself generating even more ideas because, like a "yes pattern," reading Mr. Shmooze puts my mind in a "creativity pattern" that encourages me to keep taking my thinking to the next level.

I read it every time I need a little motivation, or each time I am searching for a solution and need to think outside the box.

You don't have to be in a sales role to benefit from this book. Everyday, we all need to sell ourselves and our ideas to our Supervisors, Co-workers, clients, customers and even our families. Mr. Shmooze can help.

Reading This Book Is Now On My List Of Life-Changing Events.......2005-10-12

Wow. Buy this book, no matter who you are or how you make your living. I actually complained to the cashier at the bookstore about the price of this book, but now I realize this book is worth it's price x $1,000 and surely more, over time. A quarter of the way through the book I felt my perspective on all of my current relationships start to change dramatically, and while I was reading the book, I had to take down notes of all the new ideas I was getting about how to relate to my friends, family and acquaintances. Less than 24 hours after finishing the book, I am relating to people in a very different way, and noticing how much more warm they are toward me in return. Talk about results. Buy this book.

A Classic in the Making!.......2004-11-23

Richard Abraham has written a parable on "selling through relationships" that will be treasured by anyone in sales fortunate enough to come across this book.

An easy and compelling read, the reader gets to learn from the book's hero right alongside Robert, the young protégé, actually a college student doing a Summer internship. While a composite of several selling stars, the main character was inspired by the author's good friend, an extremely successful Atlanta businessman, Brett Hunsaker.

The protagonist, "Mr. Shmooze", a business and marketing consultant, has built a huge business by giving of himself to others, always desiring to add value to the lives of those he touches. (Quick point here: Because the term "shmooze" often has a negative connotation, another name for Mr. Shmooze may have better served this extraordinary work. He's actually not a "schmoozer", he's a caring, giving person who is always concerned with the other person and how he can add positively to the other person's life.)

He focuses on making others feel good about themselves, which is one of the key lessons any young salesperson should learn heading into the profession of sales. He continually introduces people to one another, always helping others. He's passionate about what he does and he has a lot of fun doing it, as does everyone around him.

Fortunately for the reader, as well as for Robert, he also happens to enjoy teaching others how to do the same. This, by the way, is typical of superstars in all aspects of life; they enjoy mentoring others and encouraging others to reach their potential.

Throughout this book, you'll learn many principles involved in good salesmanship and service to others. I won't take up the space to list them all here. However, the chapter on "Elevation" alone is worth ten times (actually, many, many times) the price of this book and if a sales professional learned this lesson alone and no more, they would see their production rise significantly.

This is the type of book that every company should promote throughout their entire sales force, including to their leadership and management as there are some wonderful lessons there, as well. And, like most great books, every parent should give this book to their child as a gift for them to read, re-read and internalize. This is the element of business that can make your child the most successful, but which he or she will probably never learn in school.

Sales is a very worthy profession and a sales professional should be very proud of what he or she does. Follow the teaching of the master networker in this book and you'll be both proud, and extremely productive.

I read this book several years ago for the first time, after many years of reading somewhat similar and associated material. Since then I have heard and read so many accounts of what this book has done for people, and it's true for me as well. For so many it has been a launch vehicle into a kind of magical world of unlimited possibilities. A world where reality is not set in stone, but is a product of the individual, and limited only by the individual's willingness and capacity to hold more. And once you have entered this world there's no turning back, even if you tried, but you won't. However, this is a very limited review intended only for those who are ready and waiting to launch. This book is a long proven and reliable space ship.

Very accessible story of how one being found the Way. So much humanness revealed rather than only showing his calling. And incredible references to more familiar western works makes it even more relevent to a Traveler from a different heritage. My teacher said it was a must, and he was right.

This is a book that a friend lent me and as I read it, I realised I wanted a copy of my own because it was not a book that one could "digest" in one sitting, or maybe even in a couple. I think it is a book that starts to sink in as we go through life. Everyone should read it at least once.

Finally, a yogi with emotions.......2006-11-14

Of all the books by and about spiritual leaders that I have read, this is the one I come back to again and again. Paramhansa Yogananda does not come from ego or judgment when he writes about his spiritual experience. He is not above feeling emotions such as grief and joy, nor does he believe that emotions are something to be surmounted or tamed. This is the only "saint" I have ever been able to digest and trust.

The Bible on U.S. Navy aircraft.......1998-06-29

Tour guides at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola refer to this book as "The Bible." Covers every aircraft in the naval inventory from 1911 - 1990 with minor exceptions. A photograph, diagrams and concise details highlight each type. Explains the confusing designation changes of 1922 and 1962. Overall, if you have one book on Navy aircraft in your library this should be the one.

The conclusion to the volume summarizes the lessons that may be learned from the experiences of the ten countries and discusses a list of best practices in counterterrorism.

Oustanding book on terrorism.......2007-08-11

In reading over ten thousand books, I found this one to be really exceptional. Editor Yonah Alexander did an excellent job describing terrorism in its many forms, and how each different kind of group can be defeated. The only down-side in this book was all the groups that were discussed we not "apocalyptic terrorist", or groups of terrorists that are not religious in nature. This is an very detailed book about secular terrorist groups, from the Maoist Sendero Luminoso to the militant Japanese Red Army and the narco-terrorists of South America. A superb resources with lots of detailed information. A excellent and superior resource!

Excellent book on combating terrorism.......2002-10-06

I thought that this book, an edited volume of experts from various countries on strategies to combat terrorism was done very well. The perspectives of (in-country) European, U.S., Latin American, Middle Eastern, and Asian analysts shows that terrorism is a global problem and there must be global solutions. The contributors also discuss the consequences of 9/11 so that adds to the helpfulness of the book.
