    Book Description

The city of Siena, one of Italy's major artistic centers, was home to many celebrated painters, among them Duccio, Simone Martini, Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti, Sassetta and Beccafumi. This generously illustrated book provides a survey of Sienese painting from 1260 to 1555, an era of extraordinary artistic creativity in the Tuscan city. Art historian Diana Norman addresses the style and artistic technique of Sienese painters throughout the three centuries and explores why paintings were made, where they were originally seen, and how they were used and enjoyed by their audiences. The book focuses on works of art made for Siena itself, many of which are still to be seen within the city. Norman organizes the discussion around types of commissions and throughout the book situates the paintings within the context of the political, social, and religious circumstances of late medieval and renaissance Siena.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide to the history and developement of the fibula.......2005-06-07

The fibula was a type a clasp use for holding ones clothes together (as in the example of a tunic clasp) and for decoration. Even though this volume is written in German those without a familiarity with German but is a student of archeology will still find it a great guide.

Giving the history of the fibula from the late Bronze Age to the time of the early middle ages it shows in great detail with numerous line drawings the possible ways the fibula developed and evolved.

It is also a great taxonomic reference.

Much time is spent on the Celtic fibula.

One of the very helpful things about this book that you really don't find anywhere else in books on the fibula is that there are lot of illustrations on how fibulas might have been worn based on how they were found on the corpses in inhumation graves.

Worth the price of the book alone is an illustration showing how a series of fibulas might have been assembled in the hair of a female wearer.

The fibula was of great importance to the ancient Celts and sometimes were used as a form of payment.

The fibula became a form of high art during antiquity and those not familiar with the fibula and its history will be fascinated not only with their beauty but the degree of techincal expertise, the sense of invention, sometimes the subtle humor and artistic sophistication they reflect.

Highly recommended especially for the Celtophile and those with an interest in history.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing Comics Japan ! ! ! No giant robots.......2001-12-23

This is yet another wonderful collection of strange Japanese Comics. In the same vein as anthologies SAKE JOCK and COMICS UNDERGROUND JAPAN, SECRET COMICS JAPAN is a hearty helping of strange, weird, beautiful and questionable comics.
If you're tired of the pretentious AMerican underground comis that Fantagraphics is publishing, then check out this collection of Japanese gems and take in a refreshing breath of creative air. - JOHN

4 out of 5 stars An interesting look at non-main stream manga.......2001-04-11

A collection of tales ranging from the almost dream-like Swing Shell (a story of a young girl coping with incest) to the bizarre Puntures (a strange look into the copings of modern society). Not every story in this collection, will appeal to everyone and it's definitely not for the kiddies. They will at least challenge any preconcieve notion as to what manga is about and change our views about another culture and perhaps ourselves. I highly recommend this book if only for the story Swing Shell due to its artwork and the way it deals with a very serious topic.

Words from the wise says a lot and is right said when you go through Ed's marvelous book - a great choice to pick alongwith Oxford's Dictionary of Quotations & Oxford's companion to English Literature. Oxford books are a class apart but you can't resist a pick on this one from Ed Fuller because the selection of the wise cracks, witty remarks & epigrams is just fantastic and certainly, full of humor that brings smile on a face. It's like holding a `Master-card' of wits for quick and easy access to wisdom grounds. A wide range of subjects and cross-references, supercharge conversation, speeches, writings, any time-any place-anywhere! The epigram usage is marvelous and used to fit your purpose with an example of Robert Ingersoll who took the old saying `An honest man is the noblest work of god' and brought it forth as `An honest God is the noblest work of man'
The Index of Epigram subjects is wide to choose from and these are thoughtful and thought provoking. A good book to reflect ideas and must for every home, office, library.

                  Book Description

Crossword puzzles, word games, math teasers, and the like are usually considered just amusing pastimes. In fact, many of the world's great minds have turned to puzzles and games, not just as diversions, but as means of sharpening their mental abilities. Recently, a variety of studies on the effects of aging on the mind have shown that older people who keep their minds active by doing crossword puzzles or other mentally challenging tasks are statistically far less likely to be afflicted by Alzheimer's or dementia. The evidence appears to indicate that exercising our brains is as important as exercising our bodies for health and fitness.

With this in mind, puzzle expert Terry H. Stickels has created this delightful collection of fun and challenging brainteasers. Each puzzle has been carefully chosen to help the reader train his or her mind in different areas of thinking. Individual sections test and develop spatial-visual skills, logical and analytical reasoning, divergent and convergent thinking, word power, math and scientific knowledge, trivia, and more. Whether you peek at the answers or not, Stickels demonstrates that the more you attempt to solve puzzles, of whatever kind, the better you become at tackling puzzles in all categories. As your mental flexibility improves, you become generally a better problem solver, and that highly valued skill has great application to all areas of life.

With motivational quotes from great thinkers and mind researchers, PUZZLE POWER entertains, educates, and inspires you to realize your full mental potentials.

There's a host of puzzle books already on the market: so what makes Terry Stickels' Puzzle Power: How To Jump-start Your Mind stand out from the crowd? For one thing, it's the author's on collection of challenging brainteasers designed to help readers train different areas of thinking, from special-vision to logic and convergent thinking, word power and math. Unlike competitors, there's no singular approach here. For another, the puzzles are designed to challenge, not thwart. Answers are provided later and discussions reveal underlying logic to each puzzle - so you'll learn how to think better, attacking these puzzlers.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful resource guide.......2004-12-06

As someone who is involved in helping nonprofits do fundraising, I think Keegan's book is a fairly helpful resource. Most successful was its straightforward tips on how to involve the community-at-large in a nonprofit campaign.

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!.......2000-09-06

Most of the nonprofit "help" books are very dry, but this one is very readable. The information is extremely helpful and directly addresses the difficulties that we have to overcome in fundraising, particularly the "I hate to ask people for money" syndrome. I love that in places, the author says, "here is the attitude you may have.. but... get over it!" and then proceeds to tell you how TO approach things with humor and good advice. If you do fundraising or work with a group that does fundraising, you will find great information and ideas in this book!

5 out of 5 stars Best fundraising book on the market.......1998-09-11

A thoughtful, humorous account of the world of grassroots fundraising. The author brings her experience, warmth and humor to this very important book on fundraising. It is an excellent tool for non profit agencies. I recommend it for any non-profit agency staff member or volunteer board member that wants to break out of the fundraising doldrums into fundraising excellence.

                  Book Description

aptain Kidd has gone down in history as America's most ruthless buccaneer, fabulously rich, burying dozens of treasure chests up and down the eastern seaboard. But it turns out that most everyone, even many respected scholars, have the story all wrong. Captain William Kidd was no career cut-throat; he was a tough, successful New York sea captain who was hired to chase pirates. His three-year odyssey aboard the aptly named Adventure galley pitted him against arrogant Royal Navy commanders, jealous East India Company captains, storms, starvation, angry natives, and, above all, flesh-and-blood pirates. Superbly written and impeccably researched, The Pirate Hunter is one ripping good yarn.

Three hundred years after his adventures at sea, Captain Kidd is still the best known pirate in the English-speaking world. But what historians, novelists and the general public do not know is that Kidd was not a cardboard-cutout villain, a Blackbeard with firecrackers in his hair. In fact, he wasn't even a pirate. He was a successful NY sea-captain hired by the Lords of London to chase pirates, and the man he wanted to capture more than any other was a long-forgotten rogue by the name of Robert Culliford, who dogged Kidd throughout his career, and who was, in many ways responsible for Captain Kidd's reputation as a rogue, as a pirate. Zacks takes readers from an execution by hanging in London to the home of William Kidd, master mariner, at 56 Wall Street in Manhattan, and then to the high seas with Captain Kidd, on a covert mission to go after the bounty of five pirate ships, a mission cooked up and later disavowed by England's King William. Zacks brings to life the real story of Captain Kidd, a man who met a tragic end for crimes he did not commit, and who led another life on land, with a beautiful, wealthy wife and daughter in New York. Set in England, Madagascar, the Caribbean and many other exotic locations including the quite uncivilized Wall Street of 300 years ago, this is a tale of adventure, betrayal and courage, a book that will stand both as biography as well as with such classic tales of adventure as IN THE HEART OF THE SEA. The writing is quite extraordinary - you are with these men on their adventures. The reason for this is that Zacks followed Kidd's trail around the world, from libraries in England to remote villages in Madagascar, and the result is a tale that is more fantastic than fiction.

I was unable to put it down. You will love this "Pirate Book". A word of warning, when you begin reading make sure you don't have anything planned for a while because it is VERY hard to stop once you start!

4 out of 5 stars 17th century world portrayed vividly........2007-07-23

The true story of Captain Kidd is first of all a totally believeable work of nonfiction. The historical era of life at sea and the blurred and flawed objectives between the East India Trading Company, the Royal Navy and the privateer at sea as well as life within the pirate world is amazing. Equally amazing is the world of the legal system in the English colonies in America and back in London. The power politics alone is worth the price of admission.
In this case fact is much stranger and makes a far more harrowing story than fiction.

Very readable right from the start. Historically enlightening and brilliantly researched- a very strong insight into the blurred boundaries of privateering V piracy....Kidd becomes flesh and bone with a strong beating heart - all due to a narrative which is highly personal. It's not often with historical works that one can feel right There not only in the Place but in the Mind. Through great story telling but also through Kidd's own words from historical documents one truely gets a sense of what drove Kidd and his actions.

5 out of 5 stars Captain Kidd Comes Alive in this Portrait of Pirate History.......2007-03-19

"The Pirate Hunter: The True Story of Captain Kidd" by Richard Zachs is an incredible work of nonfiction. He truly makes history come alive in this detailed account of Captain William Kidd's ill-fated scheme to capture pirates in the waters off of Africa, India, and the Middle East to make (illegal) money for his rich English backers, including the King of England himself.

Here is a pirate story that blows away all sorts of pirate myth and cliché. The major argument made is that Captain Kidd was no pirate himself, though he died a pirate's death and lives in history as one of the most notorious pirates ever. Poor Kidd was the victim of mutiny by real pirates, double-handed dealings, hurt pride, vicious gossip, and his own tragic mistakes. You can't help but feel sorry for the man as he drunkenly awaits his legendary fate with the gallows.

Zachs uses all sorts of historical documents, including Kidd's own writings, to retrace Kidd's incredible 3-year voyage, imprisonment, trial, and death. Along the way, we learn in vivid detail about life in colonial America and Britain, life at sea, and the many different cultures and customs the sailors (or pirates) encounter in different parts of the world, from Africa to Indonesia and back. It is almost exhausting in its detail, but it makes for a good story that you can practically see, hear, and smell.

The most fascinating aspect for me were the sections regarding Kidd's trial and the ridiculousness of the British court system. Even more fascinating was the crowd's take on public executions. I couldn't stop giggling at the horrible thought of people throwing dead cats and dogs, covered in feces, into the crowd for the fun of it. Truth, it turns out in this story, is stranger than fiction.

Anyhow, I recommend this book for anyone interested in pirates or for those of us who just want to read a good story from our past. It is history as it should be read - informative, intriguing, and fun.

                  4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-11

This book is an excellent read. I couldn't put it down. Captain Kidd and the other characters in the book come alive in this book. You feel the emotions of the characters. Unlike many books telling real history, Mr. Zacks doesn't get the reader bogged down in rote facts, but rather engages with action and suspense. The reader comes away with a sense of what it was like to live in Captain Kidd's time, and the forces shaping the history around him.

                  Highly recommended.

                      Book Description

On what was a virtually unheard of Pacific island, the United States shattered the myth of Japanese invincibility. In the first American amphibious assault of the Second World War, the US Marines and Army halted the apparently irresistible Japanese advance in its tracks. Over 30,000 American and Japanese casualties were suffered in five months of bitter fighting. From the ranks of the units that contested this campaign a seasoned fighting force of US veterans was created that would, island by island, sweep the Japanese back across the Pacific.

Even if you didn't much care for "The Thin Red Line", you should get this book for general information (though a bit short) on the Guadalcanal long drawn battle.

In the usual Campaign series format, highlights from the book are the topological maps in 3D and the uniforms and equipment sketches. (These drawings actually come from other Osprey series, such as WARRIORS, MEN AT ARMS, or ELITE.)

You could also get MIDWAY 1942 from the same series, to get more information on Pacific battles during that year of WWII.

                              Book Description

"Loch Johnson and James Wirtz have produced a vitally important volume on the future of strategic intelligence. At a time when U.S. and other intelligence services are adapting quickly to the new threat environment, in part by returning to the basics of collection, analysis, counterintelligence, and covert action, this volume offers historical parallels and contemporary discussions about the challenges of doing so. Drawing upon traditional and sometimes controversial experts, this book covers the rich intelligence landscape, and incorporates updated discussions on ethics and accountability, politicization of intelligence, and even a section on intelligence in other lands. One of the richest volumes on intelligence in the past decade." —Kevin O'Connell, Director, Intelligence Policy Center, RAND
"This is an outstanding text, good for anyone who wants to know more about a crucial component of policymaking. In the post-Cold War, post-September 11th world, Johnson and Wirtz have assembled a collection of articles across the intelligence spectrum. The reader cannot come away from this book without a greater understanding of intelligence and its importance to U.S. policymakers in today's world." —Frank J. Smist, Jr., Rockhurst University
"This anthology is a welcome addition to the growing literature on intelligence. The articles selected generally provide excellent elaborations of the key issues, triumphs, and tribulations of a controversial but necessary component of our government, especially in the post 9/11 era." —George C. Fidas, The George Washington University
STRATEGIC INTELLIGENCE provides the first comprehensive set of readings in the field of intelligence studies. Johnson and Wirtz's anthology spans a wide range of topics, from how the United States gathers and interprets information collected around the world to comparisons of the American intelligence system with the secret agencies of other nations. The readings are written by renowned experts, and each article is prefaced by a brief, framing introduction written by the editors.

The text addresses a wide range of material including: (1) the meaning of strategic intelligence; (2) methods of intelligence collection; (3) intelligence analysis; (4) the danger of intelligence politicization; (5) relationships between intelligence officers and the policymakers they serve; (6) covert action; (7) counterintelligence; (8) accountability and civil liberties; and (9) intelligence as practiced in other nations.

The text also contains valuable pedagogical features including: (1) thirty-six classic articles on intelligence by leading experts; (2) nine thorough, chapter-length introductory essays by Johnson and Wirtz, which serve as a helpful "road map" for the reader; (3) brief synopses of each article and author profiles; (4) charts and figures on intelligence organization and leadership; and (5) select bibliography.

2 out of 5 stars Flawed as an instructional text.......2005-11-16

I have a few, rather large, reservations regarding the efficacy of this anthology as an aid to learning about intelligence, both of which relate to the fact that this is a "cut and paste" anthology that has sought no further update or revision from the articles' original authors. This is problematic for the following reasons:

                              1. Many of the articles, while certainly providing valuable information at the theoretical and conceptual levels, are now so dated as to be, at best, obsolescent at the operational and institutional levels. When trying to teach people new to the field of study, the fact that many of the institutional and legal frameworks have altered significantly from when the articles were written (a great many being from the mid-late 1980s) often leads to a great deal of confusion.

                              2. Many of the articles, while being concept-rich, are written in such an appalling fashion that one cannot help but wonder about the author's intended purpose. A coherent structure is frequently absent and quite often the reader/student is bombarded with too much information in too short a space of time with an absence of context. This is particularly true of the articles that appear in the section that deals with accountability and oversight. An edited volume that allowed for interaction between editor(s) and authors would help remove redundant material and improve overall coherence.

I have to wonder as to the ultimate point of this anthology. Those that possess sufficient knowledge to put the ideas into the correct context to address today's environment will gain little in the way of new information. Those who are new to the field will require extensive hand-holding to draw out the lessons. As a teaching aid, the above-mentioned inconsistencies that are endemic to the text inevitably mean that a disproportionate amount of time resolving confusion in the mind of the student, rather than discussing the ideas themselves and are thus an unwelcome distraction. I would welcome an anthology that made better use of the research that has been made in more recent years to establish these broad theoretical concepts, rather than one that consists of articles that are based upon on the institutions and context of the Cold War.

5 out of 5 stars Instant Best Reference on Intelligence.......2004-05-15

The publisher should be spanked for failing to provide Amazon with proper information (e.g. the Table of Contents and copy of the cover) for this book, which is an instant best reference on intelligence for the English-speaking audience.

This anthology brings together 36 world-class authorities on their respective domains to discuss in nine parts: Introduction to US Intelligence; Intelligence Collection; Intelligence Analysis; The Danger of Intelligence Politicization; Intelligence and the Policymaker; Covert Action; Counterintelligence; Accountability and Civil Liberties; and Intelligence in Other Lands.

The book is very strong on historical overviews of US intelligence, and is easily the single best collection of US-oriented materials available to the professional or students of intelligence. Absolutely recommended as a readings book for all university classes, both graduate and undergraduate, focusing on intelligence.

I was pleasantly surprised to see one of my very old articles on open source intelligence (from about 1995) in the book. It was sufficient for the book's purposes, but suffered from not having been sent to me for review--for example, on page 115 the practical example that was attributed to a Marine Corps wargame on Somalia is a repeat of an editorial error at the International Journal of Intelligence and Counterintelligence. This performance was actually for the Aspin-Brown Commission, where 6 telephone calls, on an overnight basis, produced vastly more than the US Intelligence Community was able to find with its billions of dollars in capability. I hope and suspect that the other chapters do not have the same problem as OSINT is the most vibrant and newest aspect of intelligence, and the other articles and authors have a richer past and more stable story. To update on OSINT, Google for without quotes or the brackets.

The book is weak in failing to properly criticize the US clandestine service, in failing to examine the complete lack of multi-disciplinary processing and lack of analytic toolkits and trade-craft (Jack Davis should have been in this book, Google for "analytic tradecraft"), and in failing to both examine other nations such as China and Israel and The Netherlands, as well as other intelligence tribes and the prospects for collaboration among national, military, law enforcement, business, academic, NGO-media, and citizen-labor-religious intelligence.

The book would have benefited from a tenth section focusing on intelligence challenges of the future, including special chapters on peacekeeping intelligence, medical intelligence, environmental intelligence, corporate and common crime intelligence, and religious or cultural intelligence.

The bibliography is weak and appears to have been thrown together, failing to list most of the top 25 books on intelligence that I have listed as essential reading for Amazon (see more about me should really say see my other reviews and lists--follow it for the lists on information society, intelligence, emerging threats, strategy & force structure, etc.).

The publisher should immediately correct the deficiencies in this book's listing here at Amazon, because this is a superb book that merits the respect of every professional and every professor teaching intelligence. It should be a standard reference in the military and law enforcement schoolhouses. However, the publisher should immediately begin planning a second edition with an improved bibliography, an index of relevant web sites, and the new Part X suggested above.

Kudos to Johnson and Wirtz for a job well done. The intellect and time that went into selecting each contributor is not to be underestimated. This is a magnificent effort and will be very valuable to all students in all seven tribes (all of whom are now using MeetUp to link up in cities around the world). I want the second edition, improved as noted above, out within the year.
