Book Description
The Internet provides an ideal and ever-expanding medium for high fashion. Unlike so many other products, casualties of recent e-commerce, fashion's primary appeal is fantastical rather than material. It depends on promotion, aspiration, and desire, and the Internet provides full access to pictures and techniques that create fashion's fantasy.
Laird Borrelli identifies the sites that are most effective for the established designers, but also those that make an immediate impact from a small or previously nonexistent base. Illustrated with exciting visual sequences throughout, Net Mode crystallizes a complex subject into three main themes:
Fashion Image: Designer sites, from Dior to Lacroix, generate desire through fantasy. Among the most beautifully designed sites on the Web, they often make heavy use of Java and Flash technology, as well as being audio- and video-enhanced.
Fashion Sale: The emphasis here is on cyberboutiques, ranging from Colette in Paris to Something in London, each a stylish Internet reflection of the strengths of their bricks-and-mortar business.
Fashion Talk: Elle, Vogue, and other print magazines have taken up the Internet, but entrepreneurial publishers are also using low-cost sites to establish new ways of communicating fashionhigh speed, picture heavy, with abundant, frequently updated visual information.
This lively and beautifully designed survey provides vital and informative analysis for anyone in the fashion world, anyone interested in fashion, or anyone involvedcommercially or creativelywith the Internet. 550 color illustrations.

The next volume of the Modern Masters series celebrates the life and work of one of todays top artists, John Byrne! From the death of Phoenix to the rebirth of Superman, Byrne is one of the most influential comic book artists working in the business. On the X-Men, he penciled the greatest stories in the history of the title and helped propel the X-Men to their current household-name status. His work as writer and artist of Fantastic Four returned the group to prominence within the Marvel Universe. And his reboot of the Superman mythology brought national attention to the comic book industry. Modern Masters Volume 7: John Byrne features an extensive, career-spanning interview lavishly illustrated with rare and unpublished art, as well as a large sketchbook section. Experience this look at his incredible body of work on such titles as Captain America, Alpha Flight, She-Hulk, Superman/Batman: Generations, and his creator-owned Next Men, and its easy to see that John Byrne deserves the title Modern Master.

Byrned...and loving it!.......2007-06-28
This book, like the others in this fine, fine series of paperbacks, is chock-full of excellent artwork, and there's an intriguing and informative interview with the writer/artist who has made his mark on such comic book stalwarts as Iron Fist, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Superman, the She-Hulk, and Wonder Woman, among many, many others. The Fantastic Four cover alone is worth the price of admission.
One of my Top 3 favorites in the series..........2007-05-03
Right now, the 2 best resources for Byrne information & insights are: his official Internet site, and this here MM interview.
This is exceptionally well-done! So many memorable quotes & insights, I can hardly do it any justice. It's truly one-stop shopping on all things Byrne: his thoughts on his career, coworkers & other creators, editors, projects (why they did or didn't work and the behind-the-scenes info), favorite things in life, childhood, early career, present & future, and even on the creative process. *EVERYTHING* is touched on here, with various clips of artwork in black & white to support much of the material. Some Modern Masters volumes include color work; this is exclusively black & white: sometimes pencil; sometimes ink. It's nice that artwork is included in such a great amount: it truly adds detail to the words exchanged. Also- for the cover image, I would've liked to see them use that excellent FF picture on pages 120 & 121(!), recreating the battle between Terrax, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Doom, and the FF from FF #260, but that's just me. :)
My other current favorites in the series include Modern Masters Volume 2: George Perez, and Modern Masters, Vol. 5: Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez (Modern Masters). Yet they keep on releasing great interviews!
An Incredible Bargain.......2006-11-28
This book is exactly what I'd hoped for... every single page is completely packed with John Byrne interviews (rather than others talking *about* John Byrne) and drawings. No ups, no extras. I'm sure a more expensive format would better showcase Byrne's artwork, but for me, this book is perfect. Now, bring on the Neal Adams version (as long as he's not allowed to talk about the planet swelling).
'Bout time........2006-06-16
It's great to finally have another trade retrospective of John Byrne's work; the last was "The Art of John Byrne: Volume 1" back in the mythical year of 1980. For those of you who have become parents since then, you'll be happy to know that this new book is for all ages -- and what a book.
It's unfortunate that nowadays "fanboys" like to kick around artists/creators they deem uncool (that is, men who don't draw R-rated, semi-nude women and over-muscled grotesques), and Byrne has suffered his share of this negativity. Those coming upon his work for the first time in this book have every right to be puzzled by this as his work in the last few years (using the "full pencil" technique) is as stunning as anything he's ever done. Make sure you check for the pre-inked image of Superman carrying Lois Lane over the Great Wall of China at sunrise (or sunset?) for an example of this.
The interviews that comprise the book are candid, honest and engaging. Jon B. Cooke does a good job asking questions that lead to detailed answers. I could wax rhapsodic all day over the images as they comprise his entire career; it's a special kick seeing all these characters from Alpha Flight to the Next Men in the pages of book; it's a family reunion, of sorts.
My only complaint is the lack of any color galleries, but this is no way detracts from the book and it's cool enough that we do get a brand new color cover image of the Fantastic Four, a team Byrne wrote and drew in a now legendary run in the 1980s. Buy it, read it, enjoy it, re-read it, share it, then buy another copy; this is my favorite entry in the Modern Masters series so far.

Excellent Resource for Creative Problem Solvers!.......2006-08-27
As a Destination Imagination team manager, I highly recommend this book for its potential as an improv tool. Teams can create an assortment of wild scenarios and enact the scenes, improving their ability to improvise. With 27,000 possible scenarios, it is a resource that will last teams for years!

A fun and entertaining sourcebook .......2004-08-09
The Official Movie Plot Generator is an engaging means to generate 27,000 admittedly cliche movie plot possibilities. Not an ordinary book, The Official Movie Plot Generator is spiral-bound and divided into three segments that can be mix-and-match flipped to put together a number of familiar movie hero styles with two possible yet predictible sidekicks, plot twists, or other features. Sample phrases to mix and match including "A cop who doesn't play by the rules" / "fights crime" / "with a mischievous orangutan" and "a fraternity of lovable slobs, misfits, and drunks" / "indulges in beer bashes, toga parties, and an assortment of ill-advised high jinks" / "despite being admonished by a crusty old dean", and many more. A fun and entertaining sourcebook for linking retreaded popular themes into hilarious combinations.
Hilarious!.......2004-07-07
You can literally spend hours flicking through this book, and it never gets old! It's really good fun, and had my entire family begging for more. I would highly recommend it, both for your own entertainment and as a gift for almost any occasion. Highly addictive!

Updated annually, the 1998 edition of Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide contains reviews of more than 19,000 movies, from 1914's Cabiria and Tillie's Punctured Romance to 1997's Con Air and Batman and Robin. The book lists each film's director and major cast members, tells whether it is in black and white or color, and provides the movie's running time. It rates each film from **** to BOMB, notes whether or not the movie was made in wide-screen format, and records its availability on videocassette and laser disc. The brief reviews that accompany this documentation are tersely written, filled with enthusiasm and humor. Maltin's indices of famous stars and directors make the volume a mini-encyclopedia. Every movie lover should have a copy of Maltin's text.

Worth checking out........2002-03-28
Its been said once I will say it again. Any film buff must buy this book, and more works by Leonard Maltin.
You can tell when Leonard Maltin starts talking about a movie he knows just what he his talking about and has the words to perfectly explain himself.
Sometimes however I feel he could be more insiteful when it comes to movies he hates.
But then on the other hand theirs only a few million movies list her.
How'd I live without one?.......1998-12-01
I picked up my very first copy of this invaluable resource (1993 edition) at a yard sale several years ago. Now, of course, I buy one annually and pass the old version along to favored friends and relatives. My two adult sons refuse, however, to be recipients ("we'd rather call and ask YOU for the information!") I refer to my guide daily at the very least (can you tell I love movies?), usually far more often on the weekends. I keep a copy in the living room and one next to my bedside. But really, I AM a relatively normal person with a full life --- honest!!
The Ultimate Companion for Film Buffs.......1998-11-18
Leonard Maltin is possibly my favorite critic. His taste is the best of all the thick film guidebooks. I also have the Mick Martin and Marsha Porter guide, they give films like Speed 5 out of 5 stars...pathetic. I have read maybe 20 off track reviews in Maltin's book...out of thousands. He's great, he's awesome, he's the most trustworthy...BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU RESPECT FILM!
one important omission.......1998-10-29
loved the book and everything about it , bein an old hollywood movie buff, its such a help to me, one thing that bothers me about the book is the omission of raul walsh the director of many fine classic movies such as WHITE HEAT with james cagney, somebody get ahold of ole leonard boy and tell him to list him its drivin me crazy LOL
Most reliable.......1998-10-20
I also know the Blockbuster Entertainment and the Martin/Porter guides, and I have to say that Maltin's is by far the most reliable. The reviews are precise and informative, and although he only gives the films up to 4 stars (the other two guides have 5), the ratings give a better idea of the films quality.

Review of Frank Stewart's book, "Becoming a Bridge Expert".......2001-04-07
More than anything, Frank Stewart challenges you to think. The examples he gives are designed to topple the very paradigms, or "natural plays", that burden our development as bridge players. Many times, after working through a problem, I've thought, "Wow! I never thought of that!". It really opens your eyes. If you're an intermediate player, who wants to improve your game, this book is for you!

Simplistic Guide in a Complicated Process!.......2007-06-27
'How to Buy & Sell a Business' by Garrett Sutton is a very enjoyable read on what really is a complicated subject. It is written with the assumption (I assume) that one is completely new to the process of buying a business and a first-time seller of an existing business.
Written in very easy-to-understand language, Sutton has divided up the processes of buying and selling a business into chapters with case studies presented and key points to look for and/or execute as you are buying and selling your business. Some points and pages worth noting are as follows:
Pg(s) 98 - 107: Valuation of a business is very complicated. It involves everything from the FMV of assets, intellectual property, current and potential revenue, accurate accounting and finance, and of course goodwill. There are books written that cover this topic by itself and Sutton does a good job in outlining the basic concepts of valuation. His coverage of the three principles of valuation (future benefits, substitution, and alternatives) are informative though brief. He manages to provide the IRS-recommend approach to valuing a business as well, which is of course very important.
Pg(s) 114 - 116: The negotiation phase of buying a business next to valuing the business and reviewing accounting and finance records is arguably where it comes down to (along with the ability to obtain the needed financing). Negotiations is an art with a lot of science involved. Specific to Sutton's work the section on Representations and Warranties should prove helpful from a broad view on things to look for when negotiating on the other side of the table.
Pg(s) 120 - 123: Covers structure and the pros and cons of an asset sale versus a stock sale. He manages to cover both pretty well and covers the concept of indemnification, which is often overlooked when one buys and sells a business. The stock versus asset structure is very complicated, but Sutton manages to point out high-level concerns you may have.
Pg(s) 131 - 134: Covers financing structure. Financial structuring can be the key (along with terms) on rather a deal is even "do-able." These pages point out quick-cut ways to obtain the money (at least where to look) while giving you some common sense approaches to obtaining the financing and to have sources of funds compete for your business. A strong section within the above pages is the discussion on convertible securities as a form of payment - common in large-scale sales of businesses (corporate and private), but may be overlooked by smaller businesses owners and prospective buyers.
The case studies are very entertaining (at least to read) and put the chapters in perspective. This book is not designed to be a standalone guide to buying and selling a business, but to give you a quick overview of the process as you proceed forward in buying or selling your business. It is not fluff as many would assume from the Rich Dad's Advisors (TM) book series. Also, Dianne Kennedy's chapter may make your eyes glaze, but this chapter is a must even if you are seasoned at buying and selling small businesses - yes, it covers the tax strategies and consequences. As an managing partner of a capital funding group that specializes in assisting small to medium size business owners obtain cash for their businesses, I see small oversights and mistakes that are made by buyers and sellers of businesses that if one thought about in the beginning would make the buying or selling of businesses a more pleasant experience. That's the key to my review recommendation: You will finish this book with some knowledge and/or key reminders especially if you are a novice at buying or selling a business.
In summary: If you're new to the buying and selling of a business - this book is strongly recommend. If you're a current business owner, but it's been a while since you bought or sold a business - this book is recommend for a quick review prior to going to your team of professionals. If you're a seasoned buyer and seller of businesses this read will be too basic for you. If you work with businesses as a professional adviser - this book is strongly recommended.
Good Advice.......2006-09-23
This book is great for anyone that is just starting off in the business realm. I'll assume that whose who gave bad reviews on this book are people who already have a good amount of expereince in the business world. For them this book is just too basic of information that they already know. I, on the other hand, am just starting out in the world of business. I am 21 years old and this book was perfect for me in teaching me the basics and where I need to go to get some of the information I need. This book was also very motivating for someone starting off like myself. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone that wishes to begin learning about what it takes to buy and sell a business.
"The richest people in the world learn to buy and sell businesses, not work for them.".......2006-04-07
The most motivational part of the book is in the forward when Robert Kiyosaki quotes his rich dad, "The richest people in the world learn to buy and sell businesses, not work for them."
What the book lacks in motivation it makes up for in facts and detail. I would say it's more for someone that has already decided to buy a business and is working through the details than someone looking for the motivation to make that leap from an employee to a business owner.
There is a great Henry Ford quote, "Never complain, never explain."
The topics covered are basic in a business 101 type of layout, sort of like a text book, but well worth pushing yourself through for the basic knowledge you'll get.
Get the foundation with this book then move on to some biographies of business whirlwinds who give you the real drive and push to start doing deals.

beware of reviewers.......2006-02-11
I find Michaels review disturbing that in the end he points you to his web page that is tempting, tantalizing and then he wants the routing numbers to your check book. What a guy! If he is not really a lawyer, it sounds like he has all the makings!

Excellent Primer for Budding Entrepreneurs.......2005-08-26
Excellent primer for the budding entrepreneur thinking of buying or selling a business. Will help the novice engage in intelligent conversation with his or her team of experts as well as with the prospective buyer or seller. If you want to get top dollar when you sell your house, you take the time to fix it up and know the market...same goes for a business. Consult with the expert as Mr. Sutton has proven to be time and time again.

Customer Reviews:
Good companion reading for an instructor certification course.......2007-08-28
Our instructor certification course is heavy on skill building. We've used both the first and second edition of the Ko and Rossen in our course in order to build in more discussion of pedagogical issues, to provide additional depth on core topics and provide more tips on course management.
Of interest to instructors of online classes.......2007-07-09
This book is very readable. The book begins by addressing issues in preparation of an online class, including a discussion of instructor and institution resources. Also included are chapters on student preparation, student assessment and copyright.
The strength of the book, however, is in the chapters that discuss the workings of the online classroom itself. What areas should my online classroom contain? How do I go from lectures to online activities? How do I encourage participation, yet manage my workload? How do I manage the behavior of disruptive students? I would definitely recommend the book for new teachers of online classes. The book has enough depth that even experienced teachers can use it to review their current practices.
Definitely 'A Practical Guide'.......2006-06-14
I've taught humanities online for quite awhile. A couple of years ago, I began searching for a single resource that, not only included the basics, but provided an additional (or possibly affirming) perspective on the use of online tools and strategies.
Having, previously, purchased a number of books on distance education and online learning, I eventually decided to give Ko and Rossen a go and was pleasantly surprised. The book certainly covers the basics and I believe, for anyone just beginning in online, it may prove quite useful in, not only design, strategy, and structure, but in anticipating and resolving some of the problems and issues that may tend to arise in an online environment.
I continue to use it, from time to time, as a checklist in development and as a refresher or when I find a course is becoming somewhat repetitive or mechanical. I can easily see how Ko and Rossen may be adopted as a text for instruction or use in faculty development for online. Additionally, I've referred it to a number of colleagues who are inexperienced in developing for, or in converting existing materials to, online.
I think, even if one is teaching a prepackaged course, this book has many things to offer including strategies for dealing with troublesome students and working with asynchronous discussions. A great little book and well worth the cost.
Good, solid book.......2006-05-08
If you need a text to support faculty workshops for online education, then this is a very good choice. It walks beginners through the landmines of online education very nicely. The suggestions coincide with my own personal experiences, so the "practical" part of the title certainly is accurate. I like the web links - hopefully those links can stay reasonably current, perhaps through a student/instructor web site for the book?
I give the book only four stars rather than five because it lacks some of the academic depth that I need for my online program in instructional technology. I need to introduce students to the field of study in an academic as well as a practical way, and this book focuses strictly on the practical side rather than the academic side. That is certainly a great approach, but it doesn't quite fulfill my needs for an instructional technology class, and so I have had to supplement it with outside readings/articles.
This little book is great. Other great little books that I pondered before choosing this one included "Essential Elements: Prepare, Design, and Teach Your Online Course," and "The Virtual Student: A Profile and Guide to Working with Online Learners.
Online Class Textbook.......2005-10-02
This book covers everything that you would need to "ponder' when creating or converting online lessons. I use it for my online college course as a textbook on "How to Teach Online". Definitely a "must read" for organizing your thoughts and your process.
Customer Reviews:
Not an easy read, but still, I have to say it was good.......2005-09-23
Not an easy read, but still, I have to say it was good for the topic. If you love B-17s, then buy this book. If you don't, than pass this book by. There are other WWII books that are far better and less taxing on the head. This book reminded me of a throat microphone; cool to listen to for the first hour, but after that, it was a headache.
Truly the "Greatest Generation".......2004-03-22
As the director of a museum I am often asked to review an historical book and such was the case of the Lucky Bastard Club. I couldn't put the book down. There has been a lot said about "the Greatest Generation" -- people who were born in the depression, served in the war and worked to make our country what it is today. People who belive in the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments, the Pledge of Allegiance and marriage vows. Such a man is Roy Fisher who survived 35 missions in WWII. This "oral history" taken direct from his daily letters to his new bride will make you cry for this 21 year old seasoned pilot. If you like WWII history or if you are just looking for a hero who won't let you down: Roy Fisher is your man...he is truly a LUCKY BASTARD. I wish I was half as much a man. Ted Peters, Director, Heritage Farmstead Museum.
Grounded yet flying high.......2002-09-17
As you know now, this book is composed of two sections: Fletcher's indoctrination into the Army and his flight school training; then his flying time over Festung Europa. I have to give the book only three stars for the following reason: out of approximately 500 pages, only the last 200 pages were devoted to his flying experiences in wartime England. The first 300 pages described his experiences while learning to fly in California, Arizona, and Oklahoma. This portion of the book grows on you, but it's not really what I wanted to read. However, by the end of the 300 pages, you have a good idea what it took to learn how to fly in the early 1940s; and you learn to appreciate his training experiences when he finally enters the European theater of war.
The last 200 pages were a compilation of his diaries and input from various flight crew members. This section, of course, was much more readable. Therefore, I wish there had been more to read.
Lucky to have it.......2002-02-21
I would give this book more than five stars if I could. It is a very detailed description of life in training and in service as a B-17 pilot. I read it with great enthusiasm and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the B-17 in WWII
Useful and evocative.......2001-07-25
If you want to get a sample of what 8th Army Airforce pilots and crews went through, flying the big birds over Festung Europa then this is the book you want to get.
This is, by necessity, one mans experience and one mans war, but it is in such detail that it can be forgiven its narrow scope. This work is very much information rather than data, you will not be able to dip into its index for any facts and figures you might want BUT it will give you a snapshot view of what a tour of duty might well have been like.
The book reads like a diary and was, in fact, written using the authors letters home to his wife as inspiration. Luckily the fact that the author knew this letters might be read by censors keeps them from getting so familiar that an outside observer (the reader) gets uncomfortable reading them.
This book is two seperate works together, one takes the reader through Mr. Fletchers training, and the second goes through his tour of duty. Together they provide an important chronology of a B-17 Bomber crews career.
I thoroughly reccomend it to you.
Book Description
This book is a translation of a classic work of modern social and political thought. Elements of the Philosophy of Right, Hegel's last major published work, is an attempt to systematize ethical theory, natural right, the philosophy of law, political theory, and the sociology of the modern state into the framework of Hegel's philosophy of history. Hegel's work has been interpreted in radically different ways, influencing many political movements from far right to far left, and is widely perceived as central to the communitarian tradition in modern ethical, social, and political thought. This edition includes extensive editorial material informing the reader of the historical background of Hegel's text, and explaining his allusions to Roman law and other sources, making use of lecture materials which have only recently become available. The new translation is literal, readable, and consistent, and will be informative and scholarly enough to serve the needs of students and specialists alike.
Customer Reviews:
consider an alterative.......2006-02-02
This edition is an enormous improvement over the Knox version published by Oxford, but I have done a third version that I hope you'll consider. Three of its advantages: (1) unlike Wood, I don't proceed on the assumption that Hegel's dialectical logic is nonsensical, so I attempt to clarify it, both in the translation and in notes; (2) additional materials from student transcriptions of Hegel's lectures are included with the sections they relate to, not in endnotes; (3) my edition has no endnotes, only footnotes, so readers don't have to waste time flipping to the end of the book to find what is often irrelevant and distracting information. For more on my edition (titled HEGEL'S PHILOSOPHY OF RIGHT), see the review by Peter Kalkavage on its Amazon page.
Again, I much admire this edition, and if it had been available when I started mine, I wouldn't have started at all. That said, I do think that mine offers significant advantages, including those listed above.
nice edition of an important book.......2004-04-17
Well first off a bit about Hegel: It was, until recently, quite fashionable in English speaking coutries to dismiss Hegel as a charlatan, an apologist for totalitarianism, and an embarassment to the title of philosopher. That's changing, and I tend to think it's for the good. There's a good bit of nonsense in Hegel, but there's also some very important philosophy.
The problem with not dismissing Hegel is that he's one of the most difficult philosophers to make sense of; there are passages, and perhaps entire books, of Hegel's that no one honestly understands. Luckily, the "Elements Philosophy of Right" is not only one of the easier of Hegel's books to read (easy being a relative term), but also the most relevant for the general reader. Since Hegel is speaking of concrete institutions he's much easier to follow here than in most other works. Also, I tend to agree with Wood that Hegel's main contribution to philosophy is in the field of ethics and political philosophy, and this book is the best summation of Hegel's ethical theory.
Okay enough about Hegel, onto this edition of the POR. This edition is great, and anyone who's had the misfortune of readng its predecessors will appreciate just how great. For one thing, the translation is good. Yes Hegel is tough to read, but not as hard to read as many English speaking people think; the English translations are generally terrible. This edition also has Hegel's notes on the work on the same page with what he initially published, unlike other editions, which generally put them at the end. In the earlier editions one had to either turn back and forth constantly, or skip the notes, and one shouldn't skip them because rather than being mere footnotes these notes tend to explain or expand upon the point Hegel is making in rather crucial ways. Probably the best thing about this edition is Allen Wood's excellent introduction, which does an admirable job of clearly summarizing the main theses of this difficult work, while putting Hegel into historical perspective and explaining the continuing relevance of his ethical theory.
A Serious Book for Serious People.......2001-07-12
As a mystery novelist with my first novel in its initial release, I have found that reading a variety of works helps me in my writing. I first came in contact with the works of Hegel as an undergraduate at Claremont McKenna College. Hegel's thoughts have provided foundations for political movements ranging from the far right to the far left, and this work, an excellent translation, provides insight into this thinker's thoughts. Excellent work. A classic in every sense of the word.

Book Description
The Birds of Prey of Australia is a comprehensive guide to the wide variety of raptors indigenous to Australia. Included in this easy to use field guide are some of the most spectacular birds found anywhere in the world: eagles, falcons, goshawks, and harriers all feature prominently in this
fully illustrated book. Written with both amateur bird watchers and professional ornithologists in mind, Stephen Debus highlights many unique, notable raptors, including those most at risk.
Like its predecessor, Handbook of Australian, New Zealand and Antarctic Birds: Volume 2, The Birds of Prey of Australia is an exhaustive review. Included are twenty-four full color plates and fifty black and white illustrations and line drawings, depicting the flight, posture, display, feeding
and hunting patterns, and courtship rituals of some of the world's most amazing birds. Also provided are profiles of the biology of each species.
