Book Description
In this volume, one of the great polymaths of our time focuses on the often disputed contributions of modern, primarily French, art and literature to contemporary culture. Emphasizing individual works and artists over theory and method, and with an authoritativeness characteristic of all his writing, Roger Shattuck embraces a wide range of themes, including politics, theatricality, the dynamics of artistic movements and the nature of consciousness. The essays here range from his celebrated analyses of Dada and the 1935 International Writers' Congress, to fresh considerations of 19th- and 20th-century literature, to groundbreaking studies of Monet, Magritte and the art writings of Meyer Shapiro. A tour-de-force of aesthetic philosophy and criticism, The Innocent Eye is, says the New York Times, "a fast-paced, interesting book spun out of a wealth of intimately assimilated culture."

TERRIBLE WASTE OF MONEY.......2007-09-29
If your a serious prankster then DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. The majority of the stuff in here are things that were probably funny back in the 1800's. I bought this book thinking id have a arsenal of new pranks but was severely dissapointed. Whoever reviewed this and gave it 5 stars was way off. Trust me, find something more updated because this book is not. TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY!!!!! If anyone has any idea were i can get a decent prank book, by all means let me know.
This is a good book.......2001-02-14
I like this book much. Some of the prank are old and or too mean for some people, but for entertainment purposes it is very humorous. This book is not as large as I expected and contains a smaller number of pranks as I expected, but it still is pretty good.
CULT CLASSIC!.......2000-07-17
This book is destined to become a cult classic. Its one of those ones you'll have for years next to your toilet, grinning every time you read from its sinister pages.
The Prankster's Ultimate Handbook.......2000-06-16
I expected the book to be full of light-hearted, good-natured practical jokes. Not so. Some of the jokes involve video cameras in bathrooms and other "jokes" are simply mean. A few are funny, but overall, this book was a big disappointment.
THIS BOOK IS THE BOMB!.......2000-04-08
I have successfully pestered my whole family, 10 friends and a few enemies with the nasty tricks I learned from this book! Its great! You need it! Every coffee table and bathroom needs this book. Bravo to the Author!

Book Description
A ROADMAP FOR IMPLEMENTING THE ATSC DATA BROADCAST STANDARD The ATSC Data Broadcast Standard provides the means to transform digital TV signals from plain vanilla audio/video to 57-flavor broadband digital data delivery, opening a universe of device and service possibilities. Authored by four of the standard’s lead writers -- Richard Chernock, Regis Crinon, Michael Dolan, and John R. Mick, Jr. -- Data Broadcasting is the first guide to the new ATSC standard.
These experts help you:
*Understand the concepts behind standard provisions for carrying any type of data over MPEG-2 data transport mechanisms
*Implement the standard in real-world service creation and rollouts
*Enable a new generation of set-top boxes, hand-held devices, and PC add-in cards for handling both data and streaming video
*Configure stand-alone data injection and data injection associated with video and audio programs
*Define the optimal transmittal method for any type of data
*Resolve system architecture, receiver-reference design, data categorization, and encapsulation questions
*Solve announcement, and discovery and binding mechanisms problems
*Avoid implementation pitfalls with encapsulation examples, illustrated layering, and buffer models
Customer Reviews:
A great MPEG Systems reference too.......2002-03-28
I found this book to be a great resource for the engineering and design fundamentals that relate to the question "how is all that data formatted and organized in digital television broadcasting?" The MPEG-2 Systems Standard is one of the foundations of digital television. If you're interested in how MPEG-2 really works at the system level, you'll find this book an excellent resource. The chapter on MPEG Transport by itself is worth the price of the book, but it also does a great job explaining another arcane MPEG-2 Standard, Digital Storage Media Command and Control (DSM-CC). It turns out DSM-CC is very useful in data broadcasting, but if you were to pick up the IEC standard itself and try to make sense of it, you'd find it very challenging.
Even though broadcasters have not started transmitting data along with digital television, this book sets the framework for understanding how it will be done. It's written by those experts in the field who actually designed the standard, so you know the information is accurate.
Great work.......2002-02-28
I highly recommend this book to all those who develop or maintain data broadcasting systems.
The good point is that it is not at all a replication of the specification (though a true copy of the A/90 spec is added as an appendix). The concepts are clear, progressive and sufficiently illustrated.
Chapter 3 alone tells you most you need to know about MPEG-2 Systems standard. I gained extra insight from it even after I had studied the original 13818-1 spec.
The Definitive Work.......2001-10-31
This book, written by several of data broadcast specification authors, is The Definitive Work on the ATSC Data Broadcast specification.
If you are an implementer of data broadcasting, you need exactly two things: a copy of the specification and a copy of this book.

Complex........2007-06-12
The original purpose of GURPS was to be simple and realistic. This supplement is quite realistic, but not at all simple. You will need a calculator to create any bot in a reasonable time, and you will need to go over the stats for mistakes. That being said, they do offer a good selection of pre-generated bots, including two warriors and a evil man-eating bio-bot. My advice is to only create actual stats for major characters and anything entering into battle. Just treat anything else as a skill and a set of tools. I mean really, do you really need the exact stats of a robot janitor-especially when creation of said stats will take 1-2 hours?
Like robots? Well, this book is for you.......2005-08-29
This book has everything you need to design robots, either as NPC or as player characters. From tiny microbots to huge warbots. You can also use the book to design cyborgs, androids and biomorphs. Need GURPS Basic Set to play - this is just a supplement. Cool bibliography of novels, nonfiction, movies, plays, comics, manga and anime that have to do with the subject or come close to it.
Great book, complex rules.......2003-01-06
This is a great GURPS book to use as a guide in futuristic campaigns. Adds new rules, new features and some do not appear in Compendium I. Teaches how to make any type of robot your imagination desires.
But nothing is perfect...
Did you ever think GURPS' rules are complex? Well, think twice before reading this book. There is an entire new chapter to cover new rules for size and shape, power matrix, type of body (humanoid, submarines, "snake" types, etc.). Oh and don't forget your calculator to build a new PC or NPC. I like rules, they make the game very realistic, but I have to say that after the second character the rules become a pain...
Thank to the Gods of roleplay, there is an example of making a robot character: A dangerous female robot that serves as bodyguard.
Book Description
Open Space Technology: A User's Guide is just what the name implies: a hands-on, detailed description of facilitating Open Space Technology (OST). Written by the originator of the method - an effective, economical, fast, and easily-repeatable strategy for organizing meetings of between 5 and 1,000 participants - this is the first book to document the rationale, procedures, and requirements of OST. OST enables self-organizing groups of all sizes to deal with hugely complex issues in a very short period of time. This practical, step-by-step user's guide details what needs to be done before, during, and after an Open Space event.
Customer Reviews:
Useful handbook of a counterintuitive approach.......2007-03-02
Open Space Technology is nearly identical to the "unconference" approach to workshop and event planning that's currently fashionable (see "Foo Camp" or "Bar Camp" or many other geek-oriented "camps). Basically, abandon a traditional agenda and force the workshop participants to self-organize a schedule, goals, and work. It's profoundly counter-intuitive, everyone assumes that a strict plan is necessary...but it turns out to work. People really enjoy participating in an event where their opinions matter, and where everyone's responsible for raising issues they find important.
This book can come across as annoyingly new agey and dippy at times (I see someone's tagged it "embracing group genius" here on Amazon...your mileage may vary a bit from that). It's probably more helpful in getting you the facilitator into the right mindset, and encouraging you not to fall back on the crutches of detailed schedules or keynote speakers. It's pretty dated when it talks about using computers in your event, but that doesn't really matter.
Bible of Open Space.......2006-07-12
This is a very good hand-book for open space newcomers.Easy to understand and easy to read.I strongly suggest this book for anybody who want to start learning open space technology
One of the most valuable books in the world.......2003-12-26
As Brookings revealed in 2000, most of the world's 10000 biggest organisations don't yet have the measures to govern the vast majority of value now produced in services and knowledge businesses because as our networking age blossoms value dynamics are mainly intangible, deeply woven into the human relationships we self-organise, not for precise planning and overpowering command and control from the top. Value multiplication is a core gravity which should be embedded in everyone's right to work, learn , behave openly.
Whilst some of those of the transparency communities interlinking at http://www.valuetrue.com open source the simplest maths of intangible systems, others have much more fun voting on what are the safest methods to protect your system from doing an Andersen or a NASA self-destruction of its greatest purpose. Open Space is voted as the number 1 method uniting transparency communities, and because of its simplicity I predict it will always be the gateway to anyone who prizes self-organising, a term which actually means making the most of everyone's time, learning and passions to make a diffeernce to our overall purpose. A very valuable book, which in my dreams would start any MBA course or any professional's training.
Open Space is now 21 years young and over 100000 experiences mature and networked by people who are both most open with their knowlhow and conscious that you learn something subly more about human relationship trust from every Open Space you particpate in. It is as near as organisations (seen as human relationship infrastructures) can get to a modern day miracle, and long may Harrison light up the open world. See his latest deep concerns with conflict resolution applications at http://www.practiceofpeace.com
a "How to" book.......2001-06-18
I recommend using open space tehcnology and/or other large scale intervention techniques to mine the collective emotional intelligence of a group of people (this may be your company, or people from an acadamic field you belong to).
This book gives you the details on HOW to organize and facilitate an open space meeting - (what kind of location you need, how to organize the room, how to use break up rooms, how to facilitate, ...). You'll also get imporatnt rules and lessons for making this technology work. In short, it's pretty good at doing this "HOW TO" part.
WARNING: If you want to know WHY it works and if you want some examples, there are 2 other books to take a look at:
- tales from Open space (Harrison Owen, Editor, 1995)
- Expanding our now (Harrison Owen, 1997)
Good luck!
Patrick E.C. Merlevede, MSc -- author of "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence"
A Good Read!.......2001-04-24
Harrison Owen presents a hands-on, step-by-step manual for putting on an open space technology workshop. In OST workshops, participants basically set and facilitate the agenda with some guidance from a facilitator. Here, the book's examples are particularly handy. Owen suggests conference duration, agenda and techniques including how to set up a meeting, invite participants, prepare the logistics and meeting site, facilitate activities and more. While these workshops generally involve hundreds of people, you can also put on an OST event with as few as five. If you want to read gripping business philosophy, look elsewhere - this is a practical how-to manual, a task it accomplishes quite well. We [...] recommend this informative guided tour of the OST process to those who want to know how, because they already know why
Book Description
A unique look at the evolution of modern art in America, from art historian and eminent former curator of the Chicago Art Institute Katharine Kuh, a key figure in opening Americas eyes to contemporary art. Any artist worth his salt is in advance of his time, writes Katharine Kuh. Picasso, Duchamp, Lger, Mir, Braque, Chagall, Klee, Calder, Davis, Hopper, Weston, Rothko, Arensberg, Dale, Philips. These are just a few of the artists, photographers, and collectors Katharine Kuh knew and worked with during her long career. One of Americas pivotal forces in the arts for over four decades, she began with her own gallery in Chicago in the early 1930s. To sell contemporary art in post-Depression America was almost suicidal, but with guts and gumption Kuh survived. In 1954, the Chicago Art Institute named her its first curator of modern arta position of great prestige. Over the next 26 years, scouring the world, she acquired some of the most famous pieces in the institutes collection, and formed close relationships with the artists themselves. Here she gives us insights into their personal lives, their creative influences, and the way they worked. After her death in 1998, noted art historian Avis Berman, Kuhs literary executor, selected her key writings for this book.
Customer Reviews:
Provides a moving memoir.......2006-11-07
In the 1930s interest in modern art was low - but Katharine Kuh opened a gallery in Chicago anyway, exhibiting many then-obscure artists form Paul Klee to Ansel Adams and Marc Chagall. Her passion for modern art fostered their careers and led to a world-wide revitalization of interest, documented here in a blend of modern art history and autobiography. Her friend Avis Berman, a art historian, edited her writings for this book after Kuh's death: it provides a moving memoir of a life in the art world at a time when her artists' visionary works weren't widely recognized.

my love affair with modern art.......2006-11-04
This is a wonderful book. It consists of short vignettes about the author's interaction with artists she met in the course of her career as a curator at the Chicago Institute of Art and later as a gallery owner. Her insight and her ability to describe the artists are wonderful. The story about Edward Hopper was just great!!
Good description of an artsy fartsy world!.......2006-07-06
Sometimes during my read of this book I would find myself asleep but you can be sure I kept coming back. I certainly have a new appreciation for K. Kuh's modern art world and since I was able to visit the Institute of Arts in Chicago it was practically nostalgic. I think sometimes one gets so much of an education that it pushes one beyond the basic human side and one forgets that inevitably everybody takes a dump. I never realized all of the politics and tedium involved with being a museum curator. I had to look up some big words which means it broadened my horizons; right? Maybe... I enjoyed reading this book, was a bit over the top and for a hard cover book I had hoped for more photos.
Back in the day, and what a day.......2006-06-27
As a general reader with an appreciation for art, I loved MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH MODERN ART. It is a vital and highly readable document of one of the most important eras in art history.
Katharine Kuh (1904 - 1994) was a gallery owner, then curator, then art critic (Saturday Review) and in the course of her long career, she came to know the international movers and shakers. Many came to trust her and call her their friend and shared their private lives and ideas about art with her. She outlived just about all who parade across her pages--each chapter profiles a different artist or collector--and had the luxury of reflection at the end of her life to select what about each personage mattered most. For example, though she opens the chapter on Mark Rothko with the tragedy of his 1970 suicide, that's not how she wants him remembered and thus her story emphasizes what he was like twenty years before as he struck his flow. The chapter on world-class collector Bernard Berenson seems anomalous at first--his heart was pre-Modern--but in many ways the story of such a man living in the heart of the Modern era is quite revealing. That is the one chapter where the very private Kuh allows for some self revelation as well.
The portraits of the lights like Brancusi, Hopper, Noguchi and Kline, to name a few, are priceless, and they offer Kuh a chance to discuss a number of issues, including the dynamics of cultivating collectors in hopes of donations to museums, government interference, general public taste, fakes, curating a retrospective exhibit, and artists' estates. Though she keeps the attention on the artists, Kuh comes through as a very interesting person, one who chose to go against the conventional choices for women of her time. Avis Berman, who edited and completed the book posthumously, has kept Kuh's extraordinary voice intact without a quiver.
The Buyer should know that..........2006-04-15
while the writing is superb, this costly edition is printed on the cheap. At a minimum, the pages with pictures should have been in full color on glossy stock. Kuh would have been ashamed.
Book Description
With compelling detail, Without Reservation tells the stunning story of the rise of the richest Indian tribe in history.
In 1973, an old American Indian woman dies with nothing left of her tribe but a 214-acre tract of abandoned forest. It seems to be the end of the Mashantucket Pequot tribe. But it is just the beginning. Over the next three decades, the reservation grows to nearly 2,000 acres, home to more than 600 people claiming to be tribal members. It has also become home to Foxwoods, the largest casino in the world, grossing more than $1 billion a year.
Without Reservation reveals the mysterious roots of today's Pequot tribe, the racial tension that divides its members, and the Machiavellian internal power struggle over who will control the tribe's funds. Author Jeff Benedict brings to us the deal makers, the courtroom machinations, the trusts and betrayals.
Now, with remarkable new information, the paperback brings us up-to-date on these revelations, which lead to state and federal investigations and calls for congressional hearings.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best ever in nonfiction.......2006-07-24
This is one of the best nonfiction historical books I have ever read. Jeff Benedict is able to convey to the reader the most important details regarding the birth of Foxwoods in a manner which holds the reader's attention as if you were reading a murder mystery. The role of the federal government in creating this multibillion dollar industry is clearly spelled out and incredibly well documented. Kudos to Jeff Benedict for his outstanding research and thorough investigation of the Pequots.
At what costs?.......2006-04-19
I read this book on the suggestion of a friend. It definately is a pager turner and I couldn't put it down until I finished.
As an enrolled member of a 'casino' tribe I see why such a book would be written about a tribe rising to power through gaming. Afterall, Indians are not entitled to this type of wealth. We're supposed to reside on our little enclaves of land and be alcoholics and live close to nature and I ask why can't Indians have wealth? We didn't make the laws and neither did the Pequots. The Pequots just used the laws to their advantage and made it big. Why shouldn't the Pequots be entitled to justices of the land?
However, I can see the otherside of the fence as well. At what costs did this wealth and power come to a tribe that is suspicious of being a true Indian tribe? I'm not naive. It was all done for good purposes in the beginning, but once instant wealth came their way, all sense of what makes a tribe a tribe was lost to the bigger financial picture. The first thing that is cut when an audit happens is to cut the museum budget. The one thing that can disproove the skepticism of them being a real tribe is cut so that members can keep their pockets lined. No sense of community is in the hearts of this tribe because they'd be looking out for the welfare of the future generations.
But when reading this book, if you choose to, is to attempt to put all biases aside and see what this book (and the others written on the same topic) show...that this book does an incredible job of describing the legal and political forces in opposition to each other that led to the creation, and then to the interpretation and application of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. No other book has done a better job of illustrating the distinction between federal Indian law on the books and federal Indian law in practice than this one. It's a fascinating blueprint for how Indian tribes can leverage law, policy, and politics--if they are shrewd--to achieve an almost unimagineable degree of contemporary political and material power. The brilliance of the Pequots is that they figured out how to use white law and institutions to their particular advantage, and this book describes just how they did it. It is fascinating!! But also to Indian tribes reading this book, let this be a lesson in what NOT to do when instant wealth comes one's way.
Bad populist writing.......2005-11-11
Yeah ..this is unfortunate that book sells so well with such a writing!! And the topic.. and so-called investigation>>> Please.. the author would not even filed his interviews! This is no investigation to me... this is populism.. that is all!!!!
I am not American , and not native american, so I guess I am neutral!
Do NOT Give this author any more money.. rather read real academic research about native casinos: such AS "INDIAN gAMING : WHO WINS" edited by Mullis and Kamper or the Eadington book about Indian Gaming and the Law!!
A Tendentious Book.......2004-02-24
Evidently the Pequots didn't speak with this guy. I can see why. The book is really tendentious. I'd suggest instead "Hitting The Jackpot" by a former Washington Post reporter. I heard about it in the local newspaper and it's very good. Much more informed and balanced and powerful. Whichever book you like, get educated on this!
Politics Skews intent and accuracy as well as money.......2004-02-19
I hope that as readers of this book people might venture into doing research on of their own before taking the word of a man that was trying to get "funded" by a White Casino Owner in an area close enough to be affected by Fox Wood, and was trying to run for Governor?

Best bird book for Michigan.......2002-07-31
This is an excellent bird book. It itemizes observed breeding evidence of birds by township. It is very detailed and very well done. Excellent descriptions of each species. I also liked the intro. It provides bird habitat information such forest, wet lands, fields. Good history of the changes in bird species over time. Only weakness- it was written in 1991. In the past decade, several birds have expanded their territory (i.e. turkeys and bald eagles). If you live in Michigan and watch birds, this is the book to buy.
This is a coffee table size book. It is a little large to take in the field. Book uses drawings not photographics. The drawings are well done be do not replace color photos.
