Book Description
One of the great landscape and history painters of the seventeenth century, Salvator Rosa was also a talented musician, a notable comic actor, a prolific correspondent, and a successful satirist and poet. This elegantly written biography tells the story of Rosa`s creative life, art, and times; his wayward temperament; his furious insistence on the independence of the artist; and his influence on the art and literature of later centuries.

Book Description
Buffalo quietly defined the look of 80s youth culture, especially in the UK, and this legacy of an uncompromisingly urban style has since inspired legions of designers, stylists, and photographers who were part of the gang, but who absorbed and understood the images and references and made them their own in cities the world over. From the simple combo of the ubiquitous MA-1 flight jacket and an old pair of Levi's (Ray's own uniform), to the rarified clothing produced by cutting-edge designers, Petri's legacy of style--and the Buffalo stance--is still alive and making its presence felt on the biggest catwalk of them all: the street. Many people have defined the 80s as the decade in which style triumphed over substance, but Petri's work under the Buffalo "label" was, in many ways, the antithesis of what was dubbed the "matte-black designer decade." Like the magazines The Face, i-D, and Arena, which showcased Petri's work, Buffalo was far more logically a product of the DIY post-punk aesthetic than it was an embodiment of the self-consciously slick 80s image-making. Buffalo was, first and foremost, about a certain kind of hip, urban attitude--one not for sale in stores, but yours to create. Buffalo has been curated by Jamie Morgan and Mitzi Lorenz, two founding members of Buffalo who knew Ray Petri intimately. Design is by Phil Bicker, Art Director of Vogue Homme International, with artist Barry Kamen, another well known Buffalo alumnus. Included are text contributions by leading European fashion mag names Paul Rambali, former editor The Face; Dylan Jones, GQ; and Nick Logan, originator of The Face, and the man who, perhaps more than any other, helped deliver Petri's uniquely uncompromising message to a hungry, style-starved world.

Oh Yeah, The 80's.......2004-12-09
I remember when I was much younger that I use to love to look at pop culture mags from London. There was a certain look that I was drawn to and little did I know that Ray Petri was responsible for this. The book is a nice show case of his art and the editorial very interesting. It also is a reminder of how we have lost so many of our artists and others to Aids. Books like these are nice celebrations of their lives not their deaths. It's a great coffee table read.
Only if you're into it.......2001-05-13
If you get all soft and runny at the mere sound of the words "fashion" or "style," and these things have the significance of religious cultism in your life - then this is for you! Otherwise, yawn...yeah, sure...zzzz.
Incredible fuss and furor over nada, but if it fills the void, it's better than heroin.
Tight!.......2001-05-05
Buffalo style was an influence that's finally now getting play in tons of fashion mags. Amazing photos and heartfelt descriptions of the man behind the look. If you're into fashion, it's important to keep this tome around as a reference.

Just A Note..........2006-04-07
This is a good set at a great price. I'm a big fan of the Batman miniature that's included. But a word of caution: Rather than the Flash and Blackfire miniatures shown in the picture (the 2 on the bottom left), the set comes with Man-Bat and Hawkgirl.

so mean!!!!.......2006-04-17
I recieved this book as a gift from the bide to whom I am the Maid of Honour. As maid of honour, i've already read many bridesmaids how to books and this is by far the worst one ive come across. It not only has no practical information, no how to guide, no words of wisdom whatsoever, what words it does give you are just mean. It tells you that your friend will never care about you as much after shes married, and whats worse is that there is an entire paragraph about how all bridesmaids resent the maid of honour, which is just putting bad ideas into peoples heads. Pass on this book if you want to be of any use to the bride on her wedding day.....
Not for the married bridesmaids.......2004-05-06
I bought 7 copies of this book to give to my friends when I ask them to be bridesmaids. When they arrived, I found that the whole beginning of it is about being the single bridesmaid left behind when a friend gets married. Since I'm the last of my friends to be married and all my bridesmaids are already hitched, this book just didn't apply. The books are being returned and I'm on the hunt for another "asking idea." So, if your bridesmaids are already married, this doesn't make a good gift. Cute, though, if you're younger and one of the first to be married.
funny-funny-funny, and true!.......2004-02-07
How True!!! This honest and fun loving account of bridesmaiding made my fifth journey down the aisle (as a bridesmaid-not a bride!) more fun. Very validating. (the bartender at The Cowgirl Hall of Fame in NYC actually gave it to our bachelorette party!) I recommend it.
Hilarious!.......2001-11-03
HILARIOUS inside look at a role every female must play at least once in their life; very tongue-in-cheek; nice gift for the bridesmaids
all brides and maids must read.......2001-01-01
This is a delightful, informative and fun book to read. The illlustrations are unique and you want to keep turning the pages to see more. Also, there is much good information to avoid the pitfalls of choices to be made, such as avoiding selecting dresses for bridesmaids that will cause them to hate the bride forever. Much practical advice a bride and bridesmaids can use no matter how big or small the wedding will be. Buy it and laugh along with it.

Corrigan shows the parallels, within the mergers-and-acquisitions movie business and within selected films themselves, to a megabuck, blockbuster economy, a fragmented, now mythical "audience," and the politics of celebrity. Though at times he lets himself be seduced by film theory and pomo jargon, Corrigan stays lucid for the most part, and has some interesting ideas about film, society, and their relationship over the past generation.

Product Description
The most important book available to blackjack aficionados since Beat the Dealer by Ed Thorp, Blackjack Attack has been praised by every prominent blackjack expert. In it, Schlesinger answers virtually all of the thorny mathematical questions that have puzzled serious players for years: optimal betting, camouflage, risk analysis, team play, systems comparison, and much more. With twice as much material as its predecessor, this third edition contains new studies bound to intrigue even the most knowledgeable pro, including a complete reexamination of the late Peter Griffin's work, and the publication of the most accurate basic strategy and effects of removal charts ever devised.
Customer Reviews:
Not Worth the Time or Money.......2007-05-15
This book is poorly written, unduly complicated, and definitely does not outline how to play blackjack in a way that remotely resembles the way professionals play. The would-be reader is advised to look for other titles on the subject and not sink unnecessary money and time into reading this one.
Vastly Overrated.......2002-11-28
Serious problems with this book:
a)The book is about card counting, yet the author does not provide any details as to a card counting system.
b) It is academically self-indulgent to the point of unreadability. Chapters are glued together from the author's old articles with no cohesion.
c) As the book says, you can spend 500 hours counting cards at blackjack and lose. Kind of pointless don't you think? The fine details of card counting in this book will not help much. You also need a minimum $50,000 dollars to start with.
d) This page and the book itself is liberally sprinkled with comments from blackjack authors, software providers and webmasters all of whom are stablemates or have some financial interest in this book selling & succeeding. Are they all impartial? I very much doubt it.
e) The author calls the book "playing the pros way", yet apparently has some flashy wall st. job. Its easy to make a small fortune at gambling if you start with a large fortune.
Buy this book if you are a wealthy playboy with money and time to burn on a socially useless and unproductive activity.
A classic.......2002-10-31
This will be a classic book in the blackjack world just like Super/System is for poker.
1) Yes the book goes into a lot of details, but this essentially proving his points. You don't want to blindly use the Illustrious 18 without knowing for sure that it is mathematically sound. I admit a lot of times the mathematical derivations get tedious but it's nice to know if you are industrious to use the methods for your own calculations.
2) There is no counting system taught here; Don isn't a counting system producer. He is more of an player-analyst.
3) For beginners, the stuff is probably way over your head. Otherwise chapters 10 and 11 are worth the book itself.
for experienced card counters only.......2002-02-23
This is definately not a book for blackjack beginners. It expects you to be proficient at basic strategy, at least one card counting system, and all the various rules variations. This book teaches you how to apply that knowledge in real world situations. The best chapters (IMHO) teach you how to accurately evaluate your risk and expectation for any set of casino rules. Unfortunately, the the rambling writing style is often difficult to follow and the graphics are weak. I still recommend it since I know of no other books containing this level of detail.
Attack Shooting Blanks.......2001-12-07
I found this book to be completely lacking in any new ways to beat blackjack. Furthermore, the methods espoused by this book are well known to all casinos in the world and are very easy to spot. Furthermore, this book is dangerous for the novice player yet useless for the working pro.
Book Description
"Yes" or "No," from the #1 New York Times bestselling author Spencer Johnson, presents a brilliant and practical system anyone can use to make better decisions, soon and often -- both at work and in personal life.
The "Yes" or "No" System lets us:
- focus on real needs, versus mere wants
- create better options
- see the likely consequences of choices
- and identify and then use our own integrity, intuition, and insight to gain peace of mind, self-confidence, and freedom from fear
Customer Reviews:
Great book about making better decisions.......2006-03-02
"Yes or No" is a story about the process of decision making and how it can be improved to make better decisions. The book tells the technique through a story of "a man" who goes on a hike with a group and learns of the 2 questions he needs to ask himself when making decisions.
The first of the 2 questions is: Am I meeting the real need, informing myself of options, and thinking it through? This is a head-based question to focus on where we are going, and to get as much information as possible.
The second question is: Does my decision show I am honest with myself, trust my intuition, and deserve better? This is a heart question to contact our subconscious and make sure the decision is not being made out of fear or self-defeat.
Both of these 2 questions are excellent to ask for each decision. I do wish the author had taken more time to explain how to come to a conclusion for each part of the questions, but it was still worth the read. I highly recommend this book. 4 out of 5 stars.
Many Will Find Help Here with Decision-Making.......2003-03-15
Johnson offers a very helpful book in this volume. He presents a simple guide for decision-making, one that will undoubtedly enhance the process for many persons. He essentially describes a two-step decision procedure, examining one's thinking on a given issue, then examining one's feelings on the same subject.
While not as good as the One-Minute Manager classic and its accompanying volumes, this work likely will help those persons seeking to bolster their decision-making abilities.
Better results and wiser decisions.......2002-04-13
Being a person who can never make up their mind, I decided it wouldn't hurt to read a book about better decision making. I enjoyed reading this book because it told a story about a man who used a 'Yes' or 'No' system to make better decisions. This made it easier to understand and apply the system to your own problems. In the story the man talks to many people who have used the system sucessfully. They give him lots of examples on how to arrive at better decisions. The 'Yes' or 'No' system is broken down into two main questions to ask yourself when making decisions. One is a practical question and the other is a private question. This allows you to use the system while making personal decisions or buisness decisions. Every day we are all faced with decisions, big and small. I have realized, from reading this book, that I seem to not think my decisions through as well as I should. I am sure that many other people share similar problems. This book acknowledges what we may not want to admit to ourselves. That many of us are knowingly making poor decisions, but we do not have the time or effort to turn them into better decisions. Reading this book may sound like a life saver to some people, but of course not everyone is going to walk away with better decision making skills. Like everything else in life, it will take time and patience to improve your decision making. But for those of you who would like to, this book could start you off on your way to turning poor decisions into better ones.
Changed the way I make decisions........2001-07-08
I knew there was something missing in the way I was making decisions in my life. Although, I thought, I was making good decisions I really wasn't. After reading this book I have learned how to make "better decision." Dr. Johnson writes in story form the message that's easy to understand and adapt. This is a book that should be read and reread by everyone from adolescence on.
Soooo Practical!.......2001-06-08
I have worked personally with Dr. Johnson on this material and have fully tested it in my own life and career. It really works! This elegant yet profound model for clear thinking will assure that you honor both your heart and your head when making choices. The parable teaches the model in ways the reader doesn't even notice. I've read the entire book aloud with my family and read it again on a plane trip alone. It will make sense of so many things. Buy it now and keep reading it as long as you keep making decisions. :-)
Book Description
Johnny Cash is one of the most influential figures in music and American popular culture today. While he was an icon to people of all ages during his life, Cash's legacy continues after his death. His remarkable story is captured in this exclusive authorized biography, addressing the whole life of Johnny Cash-not just his unforgettable music but also his relationship with June Carter Cash and his faith in Christ. His authenticity, love for God and family, and unassuming persona are what Steve Turner captures with passion and focus in this inspiring book.
Different from other books written about him,
The Man Called CASH brings Cash's faith and love for God into the foreground and tells the story of a man redeemed, without watering-down or sugar-coating. Unquestionably one of the biggest book releases of 2004,
The Man Called CASH will be a huge success with his millions of fans and will draw in many new fans with this inspiring story of faith and redemption.
The audio book, ISBN 084996377X, is narrated by Cash's close friend and musical partner, Kris Kristofferson.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-02-09
The Man Called Cash is a very good book. very informative.I think a child 11-12 years old could read it and beable to understand what they are reading.I think it gose behond some of the other books I have read on Johhny Cash.I would recomend it to any one who is interested in seeing where Johnny Cash were he came from and the legacey he left.
Fantastic biography of a true ledgend.......2007-01-11
I am a legally blind man and and I usually get my books to listen to through the library, but after I saw the movie walk the line I felt I had to know more about the ledgend of Cash through an audiobook if I could find one. I was lucky to find this one. I love the way Kris Kristofferson reads the book. Since he was a friend of cash's, he put feeling into the reading like no other person can. Through the author's extensive research on Cash, I found out things I never knew about him. The Movie is good, but if you really want to know who Cash is, just by this and Listen to Kristofferson tell you about his friend. The man in black.
piety and weakness.......2006-08-25
I learned a lot about Johnny Cash, as well as people like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and many others who were the ones that generated so much buzz about music in the 1950's. Toward the end of the book, I was sad because I knew that it would speak of his death. I found myself not wanting to hear about it, because I had loved learning about his life so much.
My favorite story in the whole book was about a prayer he prayed at dinner. His dinner guest recalled the story:
Cash prayed and said, "... and we thank you Lord for this food, and we ask that you would bless it to our body. We pray these things in Jesus' name, Amen. When he finished praying he winked at me and said, "I still miss the drugs though."
It is precisely that juxtaposition of piety and weakness that I think I love about him. It reminds me of another man who is known well for his writing when he said:
I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do ... What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?
In case you didn't catch that, the other man to whom I referred is the Apostle Paul. He happened to be one of Cash's favorite people for obvious reasons. I have wondered why I am so enamored by people like Johnny Cash and Paul; these men of such conviction, but at the same time so open about their transgressions. I think it is because they knew themselves well, and they never allowed the good in them to elevate them to a place where they could look down at others. They knew the darkness, and that it was always waiting if they would just relent and turn to it.
Cash turned to it a lot. However, like Paul, he also said:
Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
At the end of his life, after June Carter died he hung around for a few months more. He could barely walk, was in massive pain, and was eighty percent blind. In this state, however, he still had the Bible enlarged big enough so he could read it. Others spoke about his love of Jesus, his kindness, his generosity, and his faithfulness to June.
So many want to be cynical about people who struggle, fall, get up, and fall again. They like to point and yell to expose someone else's flaws. I am more convinced that the ones who yell the loudest are the ones who are the most scared of having their flaws exposed.
One of my favorite lines in music comes from a song sung by Cash. It was written by Bono and performed with U2 (yeah, I know big surprise). The line goes:
I went out there,
In search of experience,
To taste and to touch,
And to feel as much,
As a man can,
Before he repents.
Isn't that all of our stories? I know it's mine. I also know that it is mine everyday. I walk around, and like a little kid test the boundaries of God's love. Some days, I may not go far, other days I may feel restless and I just want to run. Yet each time I return home to talk with God I find myself speaking the words of Paul:
Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Hello, I'm A Johnny Cash Book!.......2006-06-10
I usually don't read many biographies, but I received this one for Christmas one year since I am a huge Johnny Cash fan. I was glad to see that this book was very well written and also a very easy read. I knew it was going to be good when the first chapter was pretty emotional, as it starts off with June Carter Cash dying. The book also focuses well on some key moments in Johnny Cash's life that made the most significant difference - the first being the death of his brother, Jack, and the others that revolved around June. Like other reviewers have stated, Walk The Line used a lot of moments from the book and I would recommend reading the book as well as watching the movie. I think what was great about Johnny Cash, and what we can all relate too, is how open he was with how he was a sinner and how he had made a lot of mistakes (ie. drugs, affairs, etc.), but he changed his ways when he fully committed himself to Jesus and his faith. I think this book can be a great tool to those who have struggled and have difficult pasts because Cash showed that it doesn't matter what you have done, that you have forgiveness and that you can always start over. Great message and this book has a lot of interesting and funny stories that will want to make you laugh, smile, shake your head, or make you feel sad. Steve Turner has done a great job and had made me rethink biographies. If you're a Johnny Cash fan, this a must-have!
Informative and In-Depth! A Good Biography to Start Learning About the Life of Johnny Cash........2006-05-10
Before I read this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, by Steve Turner, from 2004, I had also read the 1997 book called CASH: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY (with Patrick Carr). They both cover similar ground. The 1997 book seems more homey, like Johnny Cash is talking to you, but this book, by Steve Turner, seems more accurate.
Having know Johnny and his family for over a decade, author Steve Turner was actually hired to help write another autobiography, but June and Johnny died unexpectedly, and the book turned into an in-depth research research project, instead of just helping Johnny write with decent grammar, or whatever it takes two authors to do with an AUTObiography.
Both books seem to be equally long in content, though the page counts and page sizes differ between the hardcover of this book and the small paperback of THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY book that I read.
Though both books cover a lot of the same incidents from Johnny's life, this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, features some highly interesting coverage of the last living days of June and Johnny, before they both passed on in 2003. There is also plenty of more in-depth coverage of events told in THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY, and there are also plenty of events from Johnny's life that are not mentioned in the 1997 autobiography. I recommend that you read both books, actually.
The author also points out that since he had to do research, instead of just typing out whatever Johnny told him, he has discovered that Johnny Cash never had trouble telling a good story, or making a good story even better! For example, Johnny Cash has written and talked about how rowdy he was in the Air Force, fighting with the military police, etc., but Steve Turner points out that the people who were in the Air Force with him don't remember any of that kind of rowdiness from Johnny, who never got into much trouble, and would have been widely known on the air base if he HAD fought with the guards, etc. This book also tells about how Johnny would play music with other airmen in his dorm, and Johnny was the worst of the bunch, learning a lot from the others!
There are many interesting b/w photos, although mostly small, but in high quantity! There is a photo of his brother Jack, whose childhood death affected Johnny for the rest of his life.
This book also has a chronology of major events in Johnny's life, and a discography of his primary releases, which is good to use as a shopping list, for me.
This book does have some distracting typos that I hope get fixed in future printings. On one page the same sentence appears twice in a row. In the Chronology, the death of his father, Ray Cash, appears twice on the list, in 1985 (correct), and then again in 1993 (incorrect). This is unfortunate, but these two are the worst distractions that I found without even trying.
It is also interesting to see how the movie WALK THE LINE compares to what is contained in both of these books! For instance, both books say that June Carter never really met or toured with Johnny until he was a big, established star, years into his music career, while the movie gives me the impression that they met on Johnny's first fledgling tour.
THE MAN CALLED CASH gives information about the the saw accident and his brother Jack. This book says that actually there was another 12 year old boy there, who witnessed the event, and Johnny suspected him of being involved in a bad way, though none of the adults thought so at the time, or ever! Both books mention how Johnny would see Jack appear in his dreams for the rest of his life, always a few years older than Johnny at whatever the age Johnny dreamed the appearance.
This book talks about Johnny's friendship with the evangelist, Billy Graham. I personally enjoy Johnny's Gospel albums and projects, but I am a little bit disappointed over the wasted years of drug abuse and family neglect from Johnny, who thought of himself often as a lost Christian, but a Christian none the less. What do you think about that?
The Bible says, "What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice." -- Philippians 1:18. Using this Bible verse as a model, it tells me that Johnny Cash's Gospel works, as good as they are, are also totally legitimate as long as they correctly preach the Word of God--regardless of the depths of sin and abuse that Johnny heaped upon himself and his loved ones.
As long as Jesus Christ is being preached correctly, the sins of the messenger do not negate the message itself (and we are all sinners, just not as extreme as Johnny was, I suspect)! I do not and cannot condone his sinful abuses, (though I have done most of them myself, before I got Saved 8 years ago), but I will let God judge his own servant, and I will continue to enjoy the many beautiful Gospel projects which Johnny Cash was always eager and happy to work on!
GOSPEL GLORY is my favorite Johnny Cash Gospel CD, so far. His movie, THE GOSPEL ROAD, is on DVD and is also really cool! My favorite Gospel project from Johnny Cash is his spoken word reading of the entire NEW TESTAMENT on 16 CDs, very affordably priced from amazon.com, and all three of these items come highly recommended by me!
I can recommend both of these books for anybody who enjoyed the WALK THE LINE film.
Bottom line: read CASH: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY for a fun time spent with Johnny Cash in his own words, then read this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, for the REAL story on how many of those stories actually went down!

.Let the music play.Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash was a poor sharecroppers son from Arkansas who became one of the most influential figures in American music. In the 1950s he embarked on a music career that took him to the heights of fame and wealth but also to the depths of addiction and despair. From these tensions Johnny Cash created a haunting music, exploring the dark side of himself, and others, in a voice that sometimes sounded as old as the Grand Canyon. The Man Called Cash chronicles his career, his love for June Carter Cash, his struggles, and his triumphs. Johnny Cash put his soul into his music, drawing on his demons, his faith, his pain, and his joy to become, to many, the voice of truth.

Book Description
Public assemblies and multitudes in action are fundamental to our notion of political life. Through 120 posters-many never previously reproduced-the book examines the impact of large gatherings of people in politics and society concentrating on the turbulent years of the first half of the 20th century. The posters will be presented in a nearly year-long US exhibition, drawn from the massive collection of Stanford University's Hoover Institution, and augmented by works from the Wolfsonian Museum, Florida International University, and the Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University. The exhibition catalog, published in conjunction with the Cantor Arts Center, explores the decisive importance of large gatherings of people and its correlative, the mass medium of poster art, and considers the complex nature of the portrayal of political crowds in the modern period.Schnapp's text frames the featured works within a broader history of the images of the crowd in Western art. The essay aims to sharpen the reader's perspective by creating a synthetic understanding of how emerging principles of popular sovereignty in politics shaped new images and myths of a new, collective sense of our humanity.

Book Description
This volume is a study of Henry Beaufort--the first resident cardinal in the English church, Chancellor of England, and councillor to three kings--who was a leading figure in the rise and decline of the 15th-century Lancastrian kingship. Controversial in his lifetime and vilified in the 16th
century for his reputed wealth, pride, and ambition--most notably by Shakespeare in Henry VI--Beaufort's historical reputation has since varied widely. Harris provides the most sympathetic and balanced account to date, focusing on his achievements as statesman, churchman, and financier, and
presenting important new insights into the chaotic world of 15th-century English politics.
