Customer Reviews:
Cute, interesting and fun.......2005-09-23
After appreciating another one of Ms Lattimore's clever childrens' books, I spotted this one and ordered it too. My whole family had a good giggle with this around the dining room table, and talked about the relative merits of the different styles of underwear through the ages and different cultures. My daughters are particularly happy not to be living in the Victorian era and suffering with corsets! Cleverly designed and well illustrated - and a good way to address childrens' curiosity in a wholesome way.
Good book.......2003-09-26
I thought this was a really cute book - obviously well researched, and a really neat concept. This is a good book for anyone 6 years or older.
Educational for all ages.......2001-07-03
I find the book interesting & educational.
As an adult, I find it funny & interesting to discover that our underwears have evolved through time.
As a mother, I find it a good material for our toddlers to develop their motor skills & discover the "cause & effect" concept. Warning though, be careful when allowing your toddlers to handle the pages. The flip-flaps are not that sturdy for tiny, curious & aggressive hands.
BRAvo.......1999-05-10
As something of a amateur underwear wearer I found 'I wonder whats under there ?' an inspirationol read.Y fronts have become inverted catapults of tradition and nether pleasure in my eyes.I did'nt know a gusset from a corset before this.Lifting the flaps of the book gave me a nether vista previously hidden to me by the conifers of my upbringing. Being in the trenches.......2006-06-10
I have known Mr. Ellison for several years so the reader could say my review is biased. Before his books came along there wasn't much out there that gave practical advice on gambling. He has been in the trenches for years fighting the casino games and winning. The tester in the back of this book is a testament to this. No one could have played that long if they were losing! Beating a system tester (Roulette) is no easy task let me tell you! If there were no trends in gambling results then there would be no point to gambling in the first place. You can use all kinds of mathematics if you want to disprove this but if you are going to gamble then you better believe in them! The theory of statistical propensity and his explaination of it proves that the results are dependent on the precision of the dice (wheel, etc.) but we don't have to understand this to play the games. As usual Mr. Ellison has come up with another book to give us food for thought.
Every craps player has to own this!.......2006-03-14
R. D. Ellison (the author) is a real life professional gambler. He explains exactly how he plays and why. I have read many many books on gambling and what amazes me is a lot of them don't even explain the built in house edge that the casino has and how it is nearly impossible to beat. R. D. Ellison gets the house edge iformation out of the way right from the get go in all of his books. Craps is a random game yet from experience I know that there are certain patterns and trends. What you have to do is look for the right spots and make certain bets at the right time. Definitely not as easy as it sounds. And I know this all too well from much experience. It takes great patience for sure. But it can be done. R. D. Ellison knows all there is to know about craps because he has had much experience over many years of play. He shows plenty of examples of actual table decisions in this book and all of his other Gamble to Win books. I do have to recommend that you read Gamble to Win Craps (by the same author) before going on Gamle to Win Advanced Craps so that you will fully understand all of the concepts. And most importantly learn how not to lose. Every craps player seriously needs to add this book to their arsenal.
The real title of this book should be the Idiot's Guide to Gambling.......2006-02-24
I can not write a strong enough criticism of this book. It holds itself out to be informative self-help, but in reality it is part fiction and part fairy tale.
The book is based loosely on what Mr. Ellison has dubbed the Theory of Statistical Propensity. Mr. Ellison (whom it should be noted at this point has the mathematical credentials of a short order cook) stews up his bland theory by reheating the old Gambler's Fallacy - a meritless contention that numbers on the dice, the roulette wheel, or whatever contraption you are currently losing your rent on, are somehow "due to hit." He dresses it up as a mathematical theory but it is in fact the same old fool's notion: That random numbers appear in patterns and that the laws of probability run hot and cold.
Had Mr. Ellison not dozed off in high school math class, he would know that the reason numbers tend to even out to the statistical mean over time is that larger and larger sample sizes help to smooth out apparent statistical inequities.
For example: if you flip a coin one hundred times, it's entirely possible that every single flip will land on heads. That's 100% for heads. Now flip one hundred additional times and you might get an even split, 50 head and 50 tails. That brings our total heads count to 50 heads out of 200. Still a significant 75% heads advantage, but closer to the inherent 50% probability than before, no?
Now flip that coin another 1,000,000 times.
When you finally build up a significant enough sample size (1,000,000, in our example) a measly 150 flip head advantage is de minimus. Heck a heads advantage of 10,000 barely moves the needle. That's why numbers draw to a statistical average, Mr. Ellison, not by some cosmic force pulling the coin in one direction or another. It's why a casino can run a profitable business with games where the house advantage is a slim 2% or less. You may walk out a winner one day, every day one week, even every day one whole lucky year. But keep pressing that improbability and you will find over time the sample size will start to work against you and you will lose. Its not some genie in the dice, it's called "regression to statistical mean". Google it.
Aside from his Intelligent Design Theory of Dice, Mr. Ellison imparts the following gems of wisdom:
- If your dice hit chips during a throw the probability of rolling a 7 is statistically increased.
- If the stickman changes, the probability of throwing a 7 next roll is statistically increased.
-If your dice accidenatlly go off of the table, the probability of throwing a 7 is statistically increased.
Again, Mr. Ellison doesn't bother to do any critical thinking here. He fails to step back from his own delusions and recognize these triggers for what they are: memorable events outside of the normal course of play - anchors that his tiny mind can recognize, glom on and refer back to. It is much more convenient to pick up on these memorable cues than the millions of other variables which simply fail to capture his attention. Does the dice thrower put his weight on his right or left leg during the throw? Is there an odd or even dollar amount of money being wagered this throw by the third person on the left? These are events that have just as much impact on the random throw of the dice. I wonder why he his attention isn't drawn to these peculiarities? Could it be he's just not that creative? Or is it rather that these events, just like the ones he cites, don't have any impact on the roll at all?
When I purchased this book I wanted an intelligent discussion about the mathematical odds of each wager and some traditional patterns of betting to crib off of. What I got was a 200+ pages of superstition and snarky barbs at the recognized authorities in the field who did not return his emails and calls (with good reason, it turns out).
If I had more time I would write 200+ pages of my own, and that wouldn't even begin to describe all of the reasons why you SHOULD NOT BUY THIS BOOK!
Groundbreaking.......2006-01-28
This is one of the few craps books that tells you how to chart the numbers and shows actual sessions. People think the numbers are random, but the author shows you how to take advantage of streaks by charting the trends.

A very good craps book!.......2007-07-13
The book was informative on a lot different playing strategies. Yes I made some money some of the strategies that were in this craps book. Also the author provides you with what to expect when playing craps. Unlike many authors writing gambling books Ellison has a lot of professional gambling experience which makes this book on craps worth reading and referencing. This book is better than most craps books that are currently published.
Great book.......2004-03-16

What can be said about 37.2% of the book.......2007-02-24
A zippy-cool buzzword infested hypen fiesta! The outline and subject index is the best part. It's high on conceptological hyperbole and saturated with obscurely relational compound words and grammatical structures with "-" in them.
A favorite has to be the first chapter lead off future think stimulator ... remember that old "vase or face?" picture? Imagine that we future-think that idea into a vase/face vice face/ground psycho-perceptual model ... Voila! ... the higher concept, 21st century "face and ground illustration". I think I was always able to see both the face and the vase in the 20th century but I might be mistaken. This is a must have book for .ppt jocks and leadership-by-platitude aspirants.
The book received great reviews by Amazon readers so I took faith and invested in a copy. I've picked this book up, read a bit and put it down at least 4 or 5 times over the last 4 months. I stopped at page 87 (of 234 pages of text) ... I passed it on to someone who might actually use the stuff in some managerial way ... I can't wait! or maybe he'll just carry the higher-plane entitled text around so his boss and peers might think he's becoming more stratigical.
Thinking Clearly.......2007-01-10
Future Think - is a significant book for anyone wishing to think clearly about business or personal ventures in our currently changing world. It provides new insights, expands thinking and assists in overcoming the mind traps that sometimes plague us all. I recommend this book for anyone who is seriously seeking to develop foresight for a business or experience a higher quality of life. The book is very well written and provides examples that clearly illustrate the major points.
This book could actually solve a problem for you.......2006-11-02
On page 229 Mr. Weiner brings up God: "If you want to make God laugh, goes an old business adage, show Him your plan." The author's tools will not, of course, eliminate His laugh, but they could help you make the laugh shorter and softer so that your confidence is not destroyed when you hear from Him.
A must read if you're interested in the future!.......2006-03-26
This book is really a must read if you're at all interested in the future and are looking for ways to better identify and understand trends than may impact you and your organization. Highly recommended as a useful tool in your leadership toolbox.
Most useful book I've read in ages!!!.......2006-01-26
I love this book! It's well worth the time and effort.
The authors share their thinking techniques...so that one can look at trends and see what's really going on.
It's far too easy to get inundated with data that masks underlying trends..and the result is not seeing the forest for the trees. Weiner and Brown's lessons are well taught, simply laid out and the lessons will keep one from falling into the "same old, same old" trap.
Anyone involved in strategy needs to read this. You'll never look at things the same way again. It's a classic textbook!!!

Here I Stand is an amazingly interesting read!.......2007-09-19
I purchased the book after watching the movie Luther with Joseph Fiennes (sp?). I usually do that in reverse order but not this time. The book very logically and clearly (and with great clarity and attention to detail) portrays the inner life and events going on at that time in Luther's life. It is a great review of history, the Catholic Church and the mind of Martin Luther.
The only downside is that you often need to read it with a dictionary present due to some of the words and context in which it is written that are not readily used in daily discussions. Great way to learn them though.
This is a wonderful read and one that I could not put down once I started. He is a very influential and fascinating historical figure.
A man named Martin, a Reformer named Luther.......2007-08-12
Martin Luther is one of the historical protagonists who has had the greatest amout of biographies written. This is a biography which displays not only the Reformer, but also the man Martin Luther. Luther's phrase, chosen as title, reveals the essence of the man: "Here I stay, I could not do differently. So help me God".
"By faith alone...".......2007-04-02
Having read Luther's "Bondage of the Will" I was interested in the Reformer's life and how God transformed him. In Roland H. Bainton's book you feel the man and his convictions. Bainton includes many lengthy quotes by Luther himself, so the reader begins to "feel" the man and his faith. The book also has many B & W wood-cut illustrations from that time, so you get to sense their history.
Bainton focuses on how Luther became a monk and from a monk to a world changing reformer. Luther's struggle with God's righteousness was so pivotal in his early days in the monastery, he was led to study of the Holy Scriptures by order of his senior. And it ultimately led to re-discovery of the Gospel -- that man is justified (declared righteous) by faith alone in what Christ has done for us. This revolutionized Luther's theology and his own life. Luther's emphasis, "by faith alone" is the heart of the gospel. He does not dismiss the importance of good works, but emphasized that good works cannot save and only faith saves. This was important distinction to him. And this book captures this fact about Luther well.
Moreover, the book pictures Luther as translator of the Bible into German language from original Hebrew and Greek. It is incredible feat by one man. He also wrote many hymns (including that famous "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God") to be sung at the church.
The book was fun to read as well. I couldn't stop reading. You will KNOW Luther in this book. Highly recommended.
Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther.......2007-01-10
This is an exceptional book for objective historical and theological perspectives of the life of Martin Luther. I have read the book as part of seminary studies, though the book is written with an undertone for lay understanding. The major pluses of the book are the honest depiction of the character of Martin Luther and how his personal theology developed over his pastoral years with highlights of how his insights helped cause major reforms of theological throughout the world as well as bringing the book of the bible in a readable and understandable format to his beloved German people.
Excellent Book.......2006-11-10
The Pastor at my church referred me to this Book. And it was excellent. Very thorough on Luther's life.

One of many Martin Luther biographies.......2007-03-08
I am reviewing the 1950, Mentor Books Fifteenth Printing.
This book is well laid out. Much of the material is in lecture form. There are twenty-two content headings, 12 page Bibliography, References, Source of Illustrations, and comprehensive Index. The illustrations are just that monochrome sketches.
Roland H. Bainton received an A.B. degree from Whitman College, and B.D. and Ph.D. degrees form Yale University and form Oberlin College, Dr. Theological Seminary and from Oberlin College. He is a Specialist in Reformation history.
There are many biography and reference books on Martin Luther, each with its own strength s and weaknesses. This one by Roland H. Bainton is pretty comprehensive and goes into more depth than most. Do not get out your highlighter or you will highlight every page.
This is the story of a religious leader who is well known for leading the Protestant Reformation. "I cannot...I will not...Recant! Here I Stand."

Book Description
This volume details the experiences of 107 elite American aces in combat against the Japanese. The highest scoring US pilots of World War 2 fought against the Japanese Army Air Force and Imperial Japanese Navy over the jungles of New Guinea and the Philippines. Flying P-38s and P-47s, men such as Dick Bong and Thomas McGuire won the Medal of Honor for their successes in combat in 1943-45. ‘Twelve to One’ is a rare document that details the ‘tricks of the trade’ employed by these men. This volume also includes biographies of the men whose tips for aerial combat make up the text, and the V Fighter Command Manual.

Clever Repackaging of a Wartime Report!.......2005-10-20
This book resurrects the WWII "Twelve to One" report compiled and published by the 5th Air Force, adding many photos, mini-biographies of 5th AF aces and tops it off with color profiles by Chris Davey. The result is far superior to the original; congrats to Tony Holmes & Co. for giving new life to old material!
Firsthand Advice from the Aces.......2004-08-24
This book is a time capsule from the closing days of the air war in the Pacific. Twenty-six US fighter pilots contributed to a manual on combat tactics, which forms the basis of the book. Tony Holmes has complemented this with mini-biographies of the contributors, plus the high quality photographs of aces and aircraft we have come to expect from Osprey. Mark Postlethwaite's cover painting and thirty-six excellent color profiles rendered by Chris Davey round out the package. These components harmonize perfectly.
The aces offer consensus on several points, and several relate anecdotes from their combats. Common themes are fighting in sections or pairs, avoid maneuvering with Japanese fighters, and methods of disengaging from combat for various US fighter types. Several advise head-on passes against the lighter-armed and armored Japanese. Also here is guidance on vital, but mundane issues such as formation flying, weather, and fuel conservation.
This is an excellent read. There is something here for all air enthusiasts - modelers, flight sim fans, and historians. This work complements Osprey's previous volumes VIII Fighter Command at War and Strafing Aces of the Eighth Air Force. Hopefully, they will publish additional titles in this format.

Book Description
The idea for Philosophy in a Time of Terror was born hours after the attacks on 9/11 and was realized just weeks later when Giovanna Borradori sat down with Jürgen Habermas and Jacques Derrida in New York City, in separate interviews, to evaluate the significance of the most destructive terrorist act ever perpetrated. This book marks an unprecedented encounter between two of the most influential thinkers of our age as here, for the first time, Habermas and Derrida overcome their mutual antagonism and agree to appear side by side. As the two philosophers disassemble and reassemble what we think we know about terrorism, they break from the familiar social and political rhetoric increasingly polarized between good and evil. In this process, we watch two of the greatest intellects of the century at work.

Postmodern situations, postmodern ideas.......2006-05-24
As Borradori states in his introduction, 'Both [Habermas and Derrida] hold that terrorism is an elusive concept that exposes the global political arena to imminent dangers as well as future challenges.' I think that this sums up what many people feel about the war on terrorism - unlike conflicts such as World War I and World War II, or even the more vaguely defined Cold War or Vietnam war, this is a war where there the front-line can be anywhere and nowhere, where the enemies can be anyone and no one, and where the tactics, strategies, motives and hoped-for achievables are so far removed from what traditional political and military methodology deals with that it requires a paradigm shift in our thinking. 'While the Cold War was characterized by the possibility of balance between two superpowers, it is impossible to build a balance with terrorism because the threat does not come from a state but from incalculable forces and incalculable responsibilities.'
As is typical of Derrida, he sees the relationship between terrorism and communication to be paramount. (I was first exposed to Derrida in theology classes, dealing with the postmodern predicament of looking for meaning in language and behind language in ways that make sense). It is perhaps ironic that the term that springs to mind most when contemplating Derrida is 'deconstruction', which is, in often a dramatically literal sense, what terrorism also hopes to achieve. 'The intellectual grounding of Derrida's deconstruction owes much to the nineteenth- and twentieth-century lineage constituted by Nietzsche, Heidegger and Freud. For Derrida, many of the principles to which the Western tradition has attributed universal validity do not capture what we all share or even hope for.' This becomes all the more problematic when dealing with those outside the Western tradition, such as occurred in Vietnam, Korea, and now in the war on terror.
For Derrida, communication is not simply political. 'Derrida engaged the themes of terror as a psychological and metaphysical state as well as terrorism as a political category.' This draws upon philosophical ideas that can reinterpret the events in various ways, as plays out in various media outlets even to this day. But the events of 9/11 for Derrida are not surprising. 'Was 9/11 truly unpredictable? Not for Derrida. ... The kind of attack that the terrorists launched in 2001 had already been prefigured in detail by the technocinematic culture of our days.'
Habermas also sees communication as a critical element. One issue for Habermas is the speed of modern mass communication - it 'works in the interest of those who select and distribute the information rather than those who receive it. Habermas suggests that the pressure of thinking and evaluating data quickly has a political import, because it facilitates an experience of politics based on the persona of the actors rather than the ideas that each of them defends.' Habermas' theory of communicative action, including its idea of violence as distorted communication, shows the importance of perception, understanding, critical analysis and response.
'Habermas understands modernity to be a change in belief attitude rather than a coherent body of beliefs. A belief attitude indicates the way in which we believe rather than what we believe in. Thus, fundamentalism has less to do with any specific text or religious dogma and more to do with the modality of belief.' This fits in many ways when one commentator I read recently who discussed the overall state of Muslim theology, expressing the understanding that the Muslims have never gone through a period of Reformation as Christendom did, nor have Muslims come to embrace the idea of a society and nation-state separate from religious. Indeed, we can hear echoes of this latter idea in political speech in America, often from groups that can be described as (and often embrace the term) fundamentalist. This will continue to be an issue in the war on terror.
Another issue for Habermas will be the issue of nation-state vs. international organisation power. 'Habermas is convinced that what separates the present moment from a full transition to cosmopolitanism is not only a theoretical matter but a practical one, too, for the decisions of the international community need to be respected. ... Unfortunately, the power differential between national and international authorities threatens to weaken the legitimacy of any military intervention and to retool police action as war.' This has been true not just in the twentieth century, but previously as well. The Congress of Vienna, the League of Nations, and the United Nations have all failed to have power to counter the superpowers of their times; alliances such as NATO and the Warsaw Pact relied heavily on one particular partner.
For both Derrida and Habermas, the war on terror is not as simple as Arab vs. West, Muslim against Christian/post-Christian society, or particular nations against one another. Perhaps had this been written after the recent situation with the Dubai acquisition of American ports being stopped, they would have pointed out that once again, our definitions and communicative premises fail - how does one balance the idea that foreign ownership of ports is unwise with the fact that few are concerned when British, Canadian, Australian or Norwegian firms do the same? There is a lack of definition about it all, even when all the words we use, to bring about clarity. The war on terror might be the quintessential post-modern situation.
Great, thought-provoking.......2005-09-06
It's a privilege to hear what these two minds have to say about our times, especially because their styles of thinking and the way they articulate today's problems are so divergent.
A most noble endeavour.......2004-03-25
Although the section dedicated to Habermas is brief and Derrida is allowed to make a more dynamic impact, Borradori knows very well what she is doing, and ensures that the end relult is that they both complement each other. These two thinkers might occupy opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to a whole host of issues, but "Philosophy in a Time of Terror" is not about who is right and who is wrong or about the reader choosing his/her favourite.
Habermas lays much of the groundwork, reminding us of the relevance of the Enlightenment, championing notions of the public sphere and communicative action. Reason, rationality and discourse have been, and always will be, essential components of any society wishing to realise the Enlightenment ideal. Just as philosophy was vital at the time of the Enlightenment, so too is it needed today in helping us come to terms with terrorism and in conceptualising a future which re-addresses the notion of citizenship, bestowing upon it a global and cosmopolitan character.
Derrida gets to work on much of what Habermas proposes, questioning received wisdom and conceptual systems through his own deconstructive methods. Focusing on 9/11 as an "event" and putting his own spin on globalization, we are invited to temporarily suspend belief and look at things from a more unfamiliar angle. Yes, some of Derrida's points are questionable, overblown and occasionally ridiculous, but his concerns have much in common with those of Habermas: how to realise a world society where primacy is given to international law and the religious undercurrents of political rhetoric are abandoned once and for all, dangerous as they all too often are.
This book is a reminder to us all of the role played by philosophy in shaping our present and a call for a return to philosophical reflection in order to forge a sustainable future for everybody. It's a start, and credit is due to Habermas, Derrida and of course Borradori for their collaboration. The world may well be awash with pragmatism (much of it needed admittedly) but there has to be a degree of reflexivity if we are going to avoid a groundhog day scenario. I mean, we're all idealists at heart, aren't we?
A Philosophy left on the table...........2004-03-23
The main issues I have with this book are:
1. the dialogue with Habermas is way too short. I don't know if he was on a time line, but, it is just as he is gathering a full head of steam that everything ends, and what he has to say and to subject to thoughtful consideration is profoundly worth mulling over deeply. I kept wishing Borradori would continue to probe further with Habermas. He is the foremost thinker in Germany since Heidegger and is as creatively determined to tackle this issue of terrorism as anyone could aspire to. He goes after the issues with a passion and a commitment. Perhaps there will be more from him in his own write in the future.
2. Derrida likes to hear himself talk and see himself write. The foremost exponent of Thesaurus Philosophy, Derrida does not so much hermeneutically deconstruct as blather on, much like a Michael Palin riff in Monty Python. Read the opening pages of the dialogue with Derrida, and then go watch Palin in THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE HARRISON, and I dare you to deconstruct the difference. I keep expecting Derrida to launch into the Lumberjack Song. He gets to the meat of the issue but then becomes obsessed with his own vocabulary, like the boring uncle at family gatherings. You would think there would be more drive from somone who experienced the sort of childhood and coming of age that he did, but, like so many other French thinkers, he seems to fall in love with the way words roll off.
3. Borradori comes up short with Habrmas and doesn't cut off or focus Derrida enough. Too much of her post dialogue analyses is reiiterative.
That's a pity on many fronts, because there is a significant trail to be traced from Kant through Hegel and into the Twentieth Century about the nature of peace, government and the fact that as Kant observed this is a bloody small planet and we need to figure out how we are all going to live on it without resorting to the criminality of these past centuries. Habermas is clearly focused on such questions. Derrida can clearly see the need to come to terms with them. A more disciplined interviewer might have made this the tome it could have been. God knows we need it.
But Read Truth and Justification.......2004-02-10
Amazon has really hyped this one for folks with my categories of interest and as a dialogue with supporting essays I found the relative closeness I felt with Habermas and Derrida interesting. The views of both in a discourse over the tragedy of 9/11 were close enough to the reader to touch. The discussion was in my living room. As one who normally reads Habermas for philosophical wisdom and has grown to avoid reading Derrida whenever possible -- what a difference! -- to avoid a loss of wisdom -- I felt this book was far more interview and less philosophy for some reason. The words were smaller than usual. The sentences shorter. There is the tie in with Europe's past of course. There is also the clear note that most American's are missing the bigger picture -- the European picture especially.
Reading this book was the better part of an evening in many ways.
